So ya, they should have been in bed an hour ago but that’s how it goes sometimes when you have dinner at a friends. Little pajama’s on & ready to slip them into their beds when I do get home, they are so cute in the back seat. The 2-year-old notices the two tall glass towers of a convention center as we drive down the freeway & comments on how tall they are. I say, as most mothers would, “Yes they are very tall, good eye.” Then his older sister (4) pipes in, “That is so tall & you can not climb on that because if you did you would slip & fall get dead & get blood all over the road”. Oh….now what do I say…however right she may be, it’s not a visual I want them having in their little heads before they fall asleep. No pun intended. Onto the next conversation where the 2 old, obviously feeling like his thunder was stolen, says, “Books are real”. I say “Well not all books, some books are just stories with fake characters just like movies & cartoons.” Let the arguing begin, he says they are, she says they are not, he get’s louder, she get’s louder, until the screaming match is back & forth & so ferocious I can’t compete. Then she screams, “SILENCE!” We did. All of us. Now what I need to know is where did she pick up the Achmed reference?

Stand up is the least respected of all the performing arts. As if being a stand-up comic were

Stand up is the least respected of all the performing arts. As if being a stand-up comic weren’t hard enough; the years of being judged by every person who owns a liquor license and a microphone, driving six hours to a non-existent gig, begging moronic agents and managers who are looking for a “new, original and exciting” talent, to come out to see your show only to be asked why you aren’t more “Seinfeld-ish.” On top of that it takes years to develop an act and find your voice on stage. There are child actors, child musicians, tiny dancers and even I would guess a few very young working writers but no child comics. Why? Because stand-up comedy is the only experientially based art form. Kids can tell “jokes” but they can’t do stand-up. Stand-up comedy, really good stand-up comedy has evolved from joke telling into a personal narrative dialogue with the audience.

Still, every now and then some elitist hack with a degree from the right college and the proper connections gets a job at a failing weekly magazine and decides to take a shot at you and your profession, feeling they are qualified to judge this art form because they know how to laugh and talk. This is rarely if ever done with other art forms. Seriously folks, when is the last time you saw an article about actors who can’t act, dancers who can’t dance, painters who can’t paint or pointless “performance artists.” Yet, about every six months some “critic” declares a number of famous comics “not funny.”

Ms. Sarah Ball of the soon defunct Newsweek is the latest to declare some great comics “not funny.” In her article, which I found on Newsweek.com she lists 12 acts and gives snarky put downs of their talents. I found it interesting that Ms. Ball’s list is mostly west coast, politically conservative/moderate comics. Apparently if you are from New York and ultra liberal Ms. Ball finds you hilarious!

Topping her list is every elitist favorite comedy punching bag Larry the Cable Guy. Larry’s sin seems to be his is a little too lowbrow for Ms. Ball whom I am sure worships at the altar of urinator Larry David, and christophobe Sarah Silverman. There are a couple of folks working at the top of the intellectual chart. When talking about Dane Cook (I admit, not my favorite) she heaps praise on Louis C.K. (a guy I happen to also enjoy) who also tends towards the scatological for his humor.

Here is another thing that annoys me worst than Barney Frank, several times Ms. Ball demeans comics for being less than original and yet in her writing she uses a number of “stock” lines, clichés and banal comments. She also works for a magazine which recently selected a cover picture of Sarah Palin that was borrowed from a shoot for another magazine and used without contextual reference.

Ms. Ball also apparently hasn’t seen some of the comics she lists in some time. For Emo Phillips she uses an outdated photo, (again Newsweek using a photo out of context!) and critiques the vocal and delivery style he was using in the 90’s. Artists grow and change Ms. Ball; you might want to catch Bob Goldthwaite sometime this century too! Her total critique of Jeff Dunham is that he is a ventriloquist, a comedy form she declared “went out of vogue in the Eisenhower era.” So did unbiased journalism and accurate reporting, Ms. Ball, but I’ll save that for another blog. Ventriloquism is experiencing a great revival outside elitist circles with Ronn Lucas and Terry Fator being two of the top draws in Las Vegas. While Jay Johnson, Jeff Dunham and Dan Horn wow audiences across the country. It might do Ms. Ball good to get out of Manhattan once in awhile and see what us rubes are doing out here in Flyoverland.

There are a lot of comics who I don’t find funny but I realize that my taste in comedy is skewered by my values, faith, politics and a number of other factors. I would never declare Bill Maher “not funny.” Thought I find his drug addled ramblings repulsive at times I realize that a number of equally intelligent folks find him hysterical. I might say I find his humor “baffling” or call him an “alleged” comedian but to declare him “not funny” isn’t fair to Bill or his fans.

People like different things, that’s why they put numbers on horses at the track. I would expect an open and fair minded progressive person like Ms. Ball to be a little more…what’s that word? Tolerant!

“Hailed as one of the most influential comedians and ventriloquists in the world today, Jeff Dunham is coming to Australia to bring alive his famous puppets. “

Can you imagine he has like 360 million views on youtube and has sold a whopping 4 million copies of DVDs?

It was pretty insane watching him perform on stage LIVE with all my favourite characters, especially Walter!

I think the boy and I had a great time laughing our heads off, although I have to admit, I did not get some of the Aussie jokes as usual. tsk tsk.

Even the guitar guy who opened the show was amazing, with his absolutely honest and crazy songs, like his grandma being racist, etc. hahah it was hilarious. And considering the amount we paid for such an awesome act and one that lasted nearly 3 hours, I was pretty satisfied at the end of the night

I am convinced that a woman—several women, probably, but at least one—is ultimately responsible for the Jeff Dunham Show.

I know the show’s credits indicate otherwise, but let’s just go ahead admit to ourselves that television lies to us all the time. Now, you may be thinking, “There’s no way women are capable of stupidity on such a grand scale.”

First, I assure you that women are, indeed, quite capable of such abject stupidity. Second, I say that women must be responsible for the Jeff Dunham Show not to disparage women, but because I firmly believe that the show is not simply an exercise in, um, comedic programming.

It’s payback.

That’s right, it’s retribution, for all of the cologne-soaked, clubbed-over-the-head douchebaggery American women have endured these last 40-odd years.

Beginning around the birth of the Disco scene, ham-handed pick-up lines and pelvic doomsday assaults passing for dance moves have sadly become the median experience for most women (and some men of slighter build) braving the singles scene in this country. For too long, society has turned a blind eye as roving packs of crotch marauders, stinking of whey protein farts and spray tanner, have proliferated unabated. It is for these sins that we are being retaliated upon in the form of this tepid lump of shit Comedy Central has the audacity to call a television show.

How else does one explain the sheer, white-knuckle force with which the Jeff Dunham Show has been thrust upon us? Comedy Central has scarcely let three minutes pass in the last six weeks without reminding us, at the top of its lungs, that this thoroughly unwatchable dork and his assortment of punchline crutches (sorry, puppets) have a program all to themselves. That kind of promotional blitzkrieg could conceivably be warranted if the show weren’t being aired at least once a goddamn day.

Go turn on Comedy Central right now. It’s a fair bet that feckless stooge is on the screen right now, pretending to lose an argument to a fucking sock. If he isn’t, check back in 20 minutes. He’ll be there, setting sketch comedy back about 70 years, and not doing race relations any favors either. (His line-up of puppets includes a skeletal Middle-Eastern terrorist, a black pimp and a Mexican pepper on a stick named Jose.)

Really, is there any form of comedy lower or more insulting to our collective intelligence than ventriloquism? Is your act so bad that your only hope of retaining the audience’s attention is to submit to a verbal lashing from a goddamn toy?

“But ventriloquism is an art,” you say? “It’s a time-honored skill. He’s carrying on whole conversations with himself without opening his mouth.” Well then, he’s about half-way to tolerable, isn’t he? Maybe one swift kick to the trachea and we can call this chicken cooked, huh?

Of course, this isn’t the first time Comedy Central has trotted out some middleweight hack (or hacks), propped them up against a wafer-thin premise and peddled it as the next edgy (insulting), in-your-face (irritating) and innovative (incoherent) comedy tour-de-force (laughless dud).

The difference in this case is that I’m not sure the network itself believes its own hype. A number of the promo spots begin by calling Jeff Dunham a stand-up phenomenon, which on the surface sounds like a compliment. It isn’t. Calling him a stand-up phenomenon suggests that he is successful, and that they cannot, even to their own satisfaction, explain why that is. Read between the lines, and it almost sounds as if Comedy Central is airing the show against its will.

It’s very likely that this will all work itself out in the course of one, maybe two seasons. In the history of the network, only a few comedians have proven talented enough to carry a series solely on the strength of their material and/or delivery (the short list is Jon Stewart, Dave Chappelle, Jonathan Katz and Dave Attell), and Jeff Dunham damn-skippy is not to be counted among them. But if nature somehow fails to take its course after two or three seasons, and this schmuck is still on the air on the heels of an election year, we as a country may have to rethink that whole “we don’t negotiate with terrorists” policy of ours, because we will be a nation held hostage. And if all we’re giving up is a few thousand of these, I won’t lose much sleep.

Hailed as one of the most influential comedians and ventriloquists in the world today, Jeff Dunham and his cast of cheeky puppets are coming Australia.

This comic genius has risen in recent years to become a genuine entertainment phenomenon with over 360 million views on YouTube and selling a staggering 4 million copies of his DVDs.

It’s no wonder that Dunham has struck content partnerships with Amazon.com, iTunes and You Tube in the wake of his stunning triumphs in recent times. Dunham, an award winning stand-up comedian, has had frequent guest appearances on the Tonight Show and Late Night with David Letterman. He has headlined major venue shows in Las Vegas and Toronto as well as selling out arenas in London, Stockholm, Oslo, Norway and Copenhagen.

His widespread fame has led Dunham to sign a multi platform deal with Comedy Central to encompass all areas of entertainment including television, DVD, a stand up special, consumer products partnership and a 60 city Comedy Central Live stand up tour. There is no wonder why TIME MAGAZINE calls him “the most popular stand up comedian in America”.

Jeff Dunham is the third highest earning comedian in America behind Jerry Seinfield and Chris Rock. He is not only one of the funniest humans on the planet, but the ring leader of a cast of comedic characters of his own creation. He uses the famous puppets Peanut, Jose Jalapeno, Walter, and Achmed among others to keep millions around the globe laughing heartily with his sharp yet always humane and lovable humour.

Grand opera does not get much grander than Aida. So when one of Australia’s true visionaries, Graeme Murphy, directs a new production of Verdi’s epic tale, it is an occasion not to be missed.

The King’s daughter Amneris is in love with Radamès, and hopes they will marry. Radamès, however, is in love with her Ethiopian slave-girl, Aida, and she with him. Is Radamès and Aida’s love great enough to betray their countries?

Verdi’s thundering choruses and spine-tingling arias, combined with an outstanding cast and the theatrical magic of Graeme Murphy resulted in a sell-out season in Sydney. You can see why when one of the world’s favourite operas comes to Melbourne.

We know she’s slinky, we know she’s sexy, we know she’s superb; well now Meow Meow is being secretive, sneaking into town under cover of darkness to get up close and squishy with Melbourne for four intimate shows at the Fairfax, 12-14 November.

Coming directly from a sell-out season at Baryshnikov’s Ringling International Festival, the purr-fect post, post-modern cabaret diva could not resist dropping by to treat Melbourne fans to a delicious meal of their favourite Meow morsels.

Meow’s unique brand of kamikaze cabaret kitsch and performance art exotica has hypnotised audiences worldwide and taken her from New York to Shanghai, Berlin to London to Vegas. There’s not a city in the world that’s not head over heels in love with this fabulous feline.

Meow’s collaborators and curators include a who’s who of music, cabaret, performance art and theatre; from NY’s Justin Bond, Taylor Mac and Penny Arcade to Iain Grandage, Lance Horne, The Dresden Dolls, Thomas Lauderdale (Pink Martini) Pina Bausch and now the legendary Mikhail Baryshnikov.

Beyond Glamour, Meow’s solo show, sold out fast last time she visited Melbourne Festival in 2006 and 2007 and was also chosen by David Bowie for his High Line Festival in New York, “incited” by director John Cameron Mitchell (creator of Shortbus and Hedwig and the Angry Inch). Then in 2008, Meow returned to blow Melbourne’s mind as the eternal femme fatale in VAMP.

Feline Intimate is Meow Meow in the raw (figuratively speaking of course, although you never know your luck) and close enough that you can touch her (literally, we’re sure she’ll love it). Maestro John Thorn will accompany Meow on piano for this spontaneous and enigmatic joyride channelling Brecht, Brel, Bowie, Eisler, Gainsbourg, Fellini, Tarantino and more.

I have a lot of respect for Jeff-ff Dunham. Absolutely loved Arguing with myself and Spark of Insanity.

So it’s my advice to all Jeff-ff Dunham fans. Please don’t watch his new TV show. You will lose all respect for him, Walter, Peanut and Achmed and everyone else.

Watch Arguing with myself & Spark of insanity again … and again … and again … but don’t watch this.

After surviving through the first episode, and then 6 mins and 34 secs into the second, I decided it was enough. A part of me died. It was unbearable, unfunny and just ‘bleh!’.

I just don’t want this show doesn’t ruin Jeff Dunham’s image. He isn’t Seinfeld

So yesterday was a really busy day. We did a fair amount of business. I mean it kinda got annoying.

So yesterday was a really busy day. We did a fair amount of business. I mean it kinda got annoying. Annoying in the since that I was always moving. I mean people always come in whenever you are set that no one is going to come in now let’s relax. Then when they all come in and your ready for more no one comes in. Guess I should always relax so bring in tons of people. Anyway so yeah that’s how my day was yesterday. Luckily it wasn’t a day filled with rude seniors like last time. That was kinda the highlight of my day. Comedy Wednesday went pretty well as well. Funny stuff I must say. Oh and that reminds me. I log into aim this morning and if you have aim you know that if you want it can pull up internet explorer and the aim dashboard comes up. Well one of the topics that came up was talking about Jeff Dunham and how is act is “Sexist, Racist, and just Mean-Spirited”…..yeah and. Well apparently people don’t like that. So what do I say to them. THEN DON’T WATCH HIS STUFF DUH! If you don’t like something then don’t watch it. Just cause other people like his stuff doesn’t mean you have to. Just because I think he’s funny stuff doesn’t mean I expect you to think the same. I hate Larry the Cable Guy, so I just don’t watch him when he comes on. Wow see how difficult that was. I mean I know flipping the channel must take a lot out of you. Sometimes people just annoy me. Always got to whine about something and have to ruin some people’s fun. Well it’s squiby time. I got new squibies as well. So yesterday I did the opening for the show Taina. Well all throughout the day I couldn’t get that song out of my head. Then suddenly another song came into my head. The song was No More by 3LW. Well I’m sure you all don’t get the connection unless you’ve seen Taina. Well when the show was just getting started (like the 3rd episode) they had 3LW guest star as Seniors that were this group called Blue Mascara. This is where I first heard the song No More. I’m sure two of the girls in the group will look familiar. They should because 2 of the 3 little women went off to star in The Cheetah Girls and as such become The Cheetah Girls. So Today’s video is the clip of 3LW as Blue Mascara on Taina. Sorry couldn’t find just that clip so note that they start singing at about 2:31 of the video. The second is 3LW as 3LW singing their song No More in their music video. Today’s tip is don’t learn the tricks of the trade, but how to do the trade well. Unless the trade is magic in which case you have to learn the tricks.

I want to share with you an actual excerpt from the NY Times article about Jeff Dunham. That’

I want to share with you an actual excerpt from the NY Times article about Jeff Dunham. That’s this guy:

He is incredibly popular. He has the most viewed Comedy Central Presents of all time, and his new TV show debuted with 5.3 million viewers, bigger than any other premiere in Comedy Central history. He’s popular.

Gradually, a lot of Dunham’s material has come to reflect his exhaustion with political correctness — though he needles taboos in the same impish way that his dummies used to cut down untouchables like the lunch lady or Jack Welch when he was a kid. Unlike the acts of some other comedians with a big red-state following, Dunham’s doesn’t feel resentful or vindictive, and he’s not eager to brand himself ideologically. His outlook struck me as almost alarmingly uncomplicated. He defends himself by noting that he tries to insult all races and ethnicities equally, and ultimately seems to treat jokes about all Indians being customer-service operators or all black people drinking malt liquor not all that differently from jokes involving other well-worn comedic tropes — like all wives being annoying nags or Florida being way too humid.

Dunham does concede that he’s extra-sensitive to one of his largest constituencies: the conservative “country crowd.” “That’s why I don’t pick on basic Christian-values stuff,” he told me. “Well, I also don’t like to, because that’s the way I was brought up.” He then stopped himself short and said: “Oh, boy. I’m walking into something here.”

Dunham started to explain — as if realizing it for the first time — that this would appear to make the jokes he does about Islam with Achmed “hypocritical.” But he quickly unburdened himself of the idea. “I try to make the majority of my audience laugh,” he said. “That’s my audience. They’ll laugh at the dead terrorist.”

In fact, the jokes that get some of the wildest, loudest reactions aren’t really even jokes, just statements. Like when one puppet shouts that all Mexicans should learn English, or when Dunham wishes Walter “Happy Holidays” and Walter responds: “I’ve been wanting to say this for a couple of years now: Screw you, it’s ‘Merry Christmas’!” And the crowd doesn’t laugh; it riotously applauds. Dunham describes them as moments of “catharsis,” when the dummy says something “everyone wants to laugh about, or that you snicker at with one or two friends, but that you could never say out loud.”

Listen, it’s almost too easy to pick on Dunham, and in the NYC comedy scene, it’s expected, so I won’t burden your eyes by repeating the same insults everyone else has. I’ll just say this: JEFF FUCKING FOXWORTHY MADE HIS WHOLE CAREER OUT OF MAKING FUN OF THE CONSERVATIVE COUNTRY CROWD, AND THEY LOVE HIM. Leaving yourself out of it when you’re doling out the generic stereotypical humor you do is a sign of how out of touch you are, and how stupid you think the country crowd is. Rednecks can laugh at themselves, it’s you who can’t.

Instead of reading the article, just go read the NY Times profile on Kumail instead. It won’t leave you seething with rage, and you’ll see my name too!

Oh man, NBC, calm down. Y’all are just killin it Thursday nights. Spread it around, give the rest of the week some laffs! Two straight hours of great shows, finishing with the funniest show on television right now, it’s almost too much to take in all at once.

And this week, the funniest show on television was also the scariest. You know what I’m talking about. Walking hate-crime Jeff Dunham almost became the new TGS castmember!

The battle between Jack and Liz’s different visions of what “The Real America” is came to a head tonight. Who won? Us.

Tracy’s Rule of Threes subplot was also TBS Very Funny, with Betty White’s cameo providing a great Easter egg for the superfans:

This episode’s winning subplot goes to Jenna and the writer’s though, on the strength of gay Halloween parties (they really are incredible) and because it brought back everyone’s (my) favorite 30 Rock bit part: Jenna’s miraculously flamboyant gay friend/entourage member, Sasha.

One of the first things that inspired me to start this site over a year ago was Carlos Mencia. Back

One of the first things that inspired me to start this site over a year ago was Carlos Mencia. Back when I wrote this ode to Mencia’s hate-filled, hackneyed comedy, I got some responses from folks who said not many people watched it (despite having data to prove otherwise).

Well Mencia’s show has been canceled, but fear not lovers of unbelievably lame racist jokes that serve no purpose whatsoever, because Comedy Central just premiered Jeff Dunham’s new show! And not only that, it’s the channel’s highest rated premiere. Ever.

For the lucky uninitiated, Dunham is a ventriloquist who uses his puppets as vehicles to be racist, etc. Here’s a clip of one of his signature characters, Achmed the Dead Terrorist.

Really, I’m trying my hardest to keep my brain inside of my head, you know, since it exploded.

Even other comics who have shows on Comedy Central are lamenting over his high ratings, such as Daniel Tosh on his Twitter feed.

I can go on and on about how horrible the comedy is itself, and honestly, if you don’t already see how racist it is, then I suggest you move on from hateonme.com.

But he can’t be racist, his best friend is black!

The thing is, there are many terrible comics with similar jokes. Some are able to push it further than others. Like Mencia, for instance. People felt comfortable laughing at him calling Mexicans “wetbacks” because he’s Latino with a Spanish name. He even changed his name from “Ned” to “Carlos” in an effort to “Mexican it up” (his words, not mine) and use his ethnicity as a free pass, to say things whites and others couldn’t. With Dunham, he does the same thing as Mencia, and uses a puppet as the medium to put forth material that normally would get him booed off the stage. So people don’t realize it’s still him talking?

Apparently the art of ventriloquism continues to boggle the minds of grown adults.

What I really want to point out is how many people actually like this crap (5.3 million viewers during the first episode) and what this says about America. If I can’t even trust the masses to pick a good comedy show, how the hell am I supposed to trust them when it comes to picking what’s best for my health care?

Comedy Central should have a constitutional monarchy.

To be fair, Dunham recognizes that his show “has no socially redeeming value whatsoever.” And then he goes on to say:

“You’re not going to learn anything. All you’re going to do is have a big goofy time and escape your problems for a while.”

You know, as long as you’re white.
