Of all the superstars of wrestling, few attract more controversy than Triple H. For years he has bee

Of all the superstars of wrestling, few attract more controversy than Triple H. For years he has been held up by his supporters as being one of the best, if not the best wrestlers in WWE. His detractors have claimed that he only owes his position to his marriage, that he uses his power to hold down other wrestlers and even that he has killed the business. He has, for much of his career, been involved in skits and angles that expose the business, or use insider terms and yet he is known to be a student of the business with a thorough understanding and appreciation of what has gone before him. In short, everyone in wrestling, whether promoter, wrestler or fan, has an opinion on Triple H and those opinions cover every imaginable base. What then, is the truth about the man who is arguably the most powerful and influential wrestler in the business today? The controversy with Triple H really starts with his arrival in the then World Wrestling Federation. Soon after joining the company in 1995 he became close friends with Kevin Nash, Shawn Michaels, Sean Waltman and Scott Hall, better known as The Kliq. By joining this group, Triple H was setting himself up for criticism and suspicion but also gaining opportunities. Depending on who you ask, The Kliq were either a shadowy group of opportunists, manipulating Vince McMahon in order to benefit themselves and harm their rivals, or a group of friends whose enthusiasm for the business had given them a good relationship with Vince. That The Kliq had Vince’s ear was unquestionable. To what extent, whether they were the only ones and how they used and benefited from this are the questions. The other question that Triple H’s critics pose is this: did Triple H deliberately target The Kliq as the group to join in order to further one’s career? After all, they were notorious party animals, famous for their excessive lifestyle, while Triple H himself was a bodybuilder for years and just did not seem the type to get carried away in that manner. So, was it really just a shared love of wrestling that made them friends, or was the young Triple H smart and devious enough to deliberately worm his way into the most influential group on the roster? Given the fact that the friendship between these men has endured for many years, despite all kinds of ups and downs, it seems unkind to try and suggest that their bond was anything other than sincere. Whatever the case, the fact is that they did become friends and Triple H was, therefore, in an influential position. Moreover, isn’t it only natural that a young wrestler entering the company is going to naturally gravitate towards more established and experienced wrestlers? Of course, there was a downside to being the junior member of such a group, one illustrated in the now infamous “curtain call” incident in 1996. By this point, Nash and Hall were about to go WCW and, in their last match they faced Shawn and Hunter at Madison Square Garden in a non-televised show. After the match the four friends embraced, thereby breaking character and “exposing the business” to the live audience. As Shawn and Hunter have told this story, this was intended to be nothing more than a fond goodbye between friends. They had, apparently, cleared it with Vince beforehand and, as far as exposing the business went, well, this was 1996 not 1984 after all. Afterwards, however, some unknown other people got in Vince’s ear and persuaded Vince that what The Kliq had done was disgraceful and that they should be punished. Since Nash and Hall had now gone, and Shawn was the WWF Champion, that basically meant that Hunter was going to be punished. According to Hunter, Vince told him that he was “going to have to eat sh*t and learn to like the taste of it” for some indefinite period. Hunter’s response was that he would endure whatever he had to, as long as Vince assured him that, once his punishment was over, the issue was done with. It wouldn’t be brought up again and Hunter wouldn’t find himself dogged by this time and time again. Vince assured him that, so far as he was concerned, the matter was already done with and thus, a planned push for Triple H was put on hold for about a year. For example, Triple H had been scheduled to win the 1996 King of the Ring, but that honour now went to Steve Austin (clearing the way for “Austin 3:16 says I just whipped your ass” and therefore possibly saving the company from extinction) and Hunter would have to bide his time. In later years, Triple H has often referred to this as a blessing in disguise, insisting that, at that stage of his career he was not ready to be featured that strongly, and that this “punishment” actually ensured he was ready when his turn came around. I would have to agree with him, particularly as this supposed “punishment” was hardly as serious as one might imagine. For most of the following year Hunter was still featured prominently on television, briefly gained the services of Mr Perfect as manager (before Perfect left for WCW) and even won the Intercontinental Title in October of 1996. To me, therefore, it seems more that Hunter’s push was slowed rather than stopped. Besides which, wrestling is a fluid business. It’s all very well for Vince to say “I’m punishing this guy” but if said guy is getting over with crowd then he’s getting over and you may as well go with it. The next major stage of Hunter’s career was, of course, the formation of Degeneration X with Shawn Michaels and Chyna (and, briefly, Rick Rude as Shawn’s “insurance policy”), which was another of the pivotal factors in the arrival of the “Attitude Era”. DX have often been compared to WCW’s NWO and, given that two of The Kliq formed DX, Nash and Hall were two of the founders of the NWO and Sean Waltman was the only man, prior to WWE’s takeover of WCW, to work in both groups, it is hardly surprising. In point of fact, there are as many differences as similarities between the two groups but one definite connection that both groups had was a willingness to blur the lines between story and reality and, therefore, to frequently run the risk of exposing the business. Now, this was, of course, the late nineties and it was already years since Vince McMahon had taken the decision to “break kayfabe” and publicly admit that professional wrestling was a worked sport. Nevertheless, at that time the business still had not, and many would argue still has not, come to terms with exactly what that meant and how far one should now go in this new era. The Kliq were, though perhaps they did not realise it at the time, in the vanguard of a new group that also included, for example, Vince Russo, who wanted to test the boundaries of the new freedoms and restrictions that breaking kayfabe had instituted. In that sense, they were either iconoclasts or visionaries (or both) but, either way, they got right up the noses of a lot of more old-school people within the business. Regardless of what people thought of DX, and Vince himself was often appalled by their antics, they were a massive hit with the audience. Triple H himself has often said that, at that time, they were “the hottest thing in the business not named Steve Austin” and it is certainly true that, along with the Rattlesnake, along with The New Hart Foundation’s war with America and along with the macabre soap opera that saw Kane introduced to the Undertaker’s back story, they were one of the crucial building blocks of the era of Attitude. It was inevitable, in this era of shifting fan loyalties that DX would come to be popular even as they were supposed to be booed. It only made sense when, after Shawn Michaels’ apparent retirement after Wrestlemania 14, a new Degeneration X became babyfaces. Another important change had taken place, too. Triple H was now a leader. By now, Hunter was a former European and Intercontinental Champion, as well as King of the Ring. His rise had been steady and showed no signs of abating. Critics often say that he was “shoved down the fans’ throats” but, really, this is hardly a justifiable accusation. Triple H joined WWE in 1995, the same year as Steve Austin. By Wrestlemania 14 Austin was champion but he is regarded as a man who earned his spot while Triple H was forced on the fans. Even if one accepts what appears to be a double standard here, on the grounds that Austin had more experience in the business overall, what of The Rock? He joined WWE after Triple H, with less experience, and was made Intercontinental Champion almost immediately. If ever a man was “forced on the fans” it was The Rock. Yet, by the vast majority, he is now rightly regarded as an all-time great and, if people reference his difficult early years at all, it is merely to point out the skill and charisma he displayed in turning heel. In point of fact, all three of these men, along with several others, rose quickly during these years for a couple of reasons. Firstly, because WWE was in a life or death struggle with WCW and the company were therefore willing to try new ideas and new people. Secondly, and very simply, because they were over with the fans! If you don’t believe me, get some tapes or DVDs and watch them back. Triple H was getting a great response from the crowd back in 1998 as a bayface and an even better response in 1999 as a heel. It seems to me that, ultimately, Triple H has been judged harshly for not being as over as Austin and The Rock, two of the three biggest stars in the company’s history, along with Hogan at his peak, rather than receiving the praise he deserves for being as popular as he was in his own right. Since then, of course, it is his marriage to Stephanie McMahon that has cast the biggest shadow over his career. According to his detractors, all of his success since can be attributed directly to this relationship, this despite the fact that he was already a main-event wrestler before said relationship began. Furthermore, he is accused of using his influence to sabotage the career of anyone who might threaten his own spot on the roster, to the great detriment of the company he works for. Triple H himself has always maintained that he would happily give up any creative power he may have if it were for the good of the company, and that he will step away from the limelight whenever his father-in-law, the man who wields the real power, tells him to. However, he also maintains that now is not the time for that, as the company does not have the star power to sustain such a loss. So, what is the truth? It is certainly true that, for the last decade or so Triple H has enjoyed a vast run of success at the top, winning no less than thirteen world championships. It is also true that in the early part of this century the WWE lost a lot of star power, with Steve Austin and Mick Foley more or less retiring and The Rock leaving for Hollywood. It is also true that these men have not been adequately replaced, partly due to the deaths of Eddie Guerrero and Chris Benoit, plus the defection of Kurt Angle to TNA. The idea that Triple H will not put people over is an arguable point. One can point to Triple H’s feud with Batista, some of his matches with Jeff Hardy, his Wrestlemania submissions to Benoit and Cena, even the recent DX-Legacy feud and say, sure, of course Triple H puts people over. Or, one could look at feuds with, say, Booker T, Rob Van Dam, Scott Steiner and Hunter’s first feud with Randy Orton as evidence that Triple H does nothing but squash people and make them look bad. It should surely be obvious that to go entirely one way or the other is to present a jaundiced view. The real key, of course, is who makes these decisions. Hunter’s critics assert that he is the one deciding to hold down talent and that any examples to the contrary are merely rare examples of times he was over-ruled. Without being part of the creative meetings, how can we possibly know? All we know for certain is this – the WWE is Vince McMahon’s company and the buck for every decision stops with him. If Hunter uses his influence to maximise his own position, why then he’s only doing what countless other wrestlers have done in the past. Moreover, Triple H managed to carve out a main-event spot for himself in an era when Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock were at the height of their popularity. I sincerely doubt that he is at all worried that anyone might ever threaten his spot in this day and age. The other factor that needs to be remembered is that, these days, the WWE is unwilling to take chances. As a company, their inclination is to stick with a safe bet, a proven draw like Triple H, rather than gamble on an unknown commodity. The spur of desperation once provided by the threat of Ted Turner’s millions is no longer present and so WWE will not take desperate gambles. It is not just Triple H’s role but WWE’s entire main-event picture, especially on Raw, that has become static and unchanging. It’s interesting to note that John Cena and The Undertaker, perhaps the only men booked even stronger than Hunter these days, are rarely, if ever, accused of refusing to put people over. In their case, the blame is almost always put on Vince and creative for not using them to elevate new talent. The mere fact that they’re not married to a McMahon does not mean, however, that they have no influence over Vince. What we see hear is a double standard in operation, something that I hope I have shown is nothing new in Hunter’s career. Finally, does Triple H deserve his success? Well, as I’ve said before, it’s difficult to provide a fair, objective view when one is writing about such a subjective issue. There are, and always have been, some fans who consider Triple H a dull competitor and/or a dull speaker. These are entirely valid assertions. Triple H’s ring style is not spectacular enough for the tastes of some, too repetitive for others. His speaking style is realistic, rather than caricatured promo style of many of wrestling’s great speakers. Personally, I have always found his work to be extremely entertaining. Many of my favourite WWE matches have involved Triple H and I have found him to be convincing as both a hero and a villain, believable both when intense and when humorous. For the most part, the crowd have always been into him and his fellow wrestlers tend to speak highly of his work. For my part and, I would guess the majority of fans, yes, Triple H does deserve his success. Maybe we might quibble over the precise number of title reigns but, by and large, I think most would agree that Triple H is a bone fide main event player.

No need to delay – let’s keep this thing rolling.

WWF Intercontinental Champion Chris Benoit vs. Chris Jericho – Ladder Match (Royal Rumble 2001)

Matt: Once again, the ladder match gets reinvented. These two rethought what Shawn and Razor did with ladders in 1-on-1 matches and then centered their already established offensive moves around the ladder. It’s quite amazing how well this worked with so many different moves from both men. Ladder matches have been done to death during this decade, but I don’t think there’s been one quite as good since (as far as singles matches go) that didn’t rely solely on insane falls and super dangerous high spots like this one. From my view, we’re talking ****¾ territory.

Justin: The rivalry from 2000 was the hook in this slugfest and these two great athletes went out there and tore the house down. The whole match was just super stiff as these two beat on each other with their fists and the ladder. The chair shot on the Benoit tope was just nasty and adds to the legend of this match. Another sick spot was the top rope leg sweep using the ladder. The Walls on top the ladder was also impressive and was the big spot of the match. After a weak last few months of 2000, Jericho was quickly elevated back into the upper midcard with this bout. These two really stepped it up, showed off their chemistry and came up with some innovative new spots in this match, and that mixed in with the sheer brutality helped make it an instant classic.

Scott: No surprise about this match. The more stipulations you add, the better this matchup gets. It’s tough to argue whenever these two get together that you’re going to have at least a 3.5 match and that’s if both are totally off. I always like the dynamic when Benoit was the heel, and Jericho was the face. Benoit took the violence meter to the next level in this match, but when Jericho put the Walls on him on top of the ladder, that’s when you knew this became a classic.

Steve Austin vs. Triple H – 3 Stages of Hell (No Way Out 2001)

Matt: You talk about a way to finally end a feud. This was the first of its kind in the WWF where each fall is a different type of match. The first fall was a standard match, the second fall was a street fight, and the final fall was a cage match. How in the world could you possibly take this feud any higher? Somebody had to go when this was over. Everything worked well in this match and they pulled off the different gimmick matches effortlessly. Much like WrestleMania x8 where the main events were backwards, this should have closed the PPV instead of the world title match. But hindsight is 20/20 and all that. An easy ***** affair in my opinion with both guys busting their butts for 40 exciting minutes in one of the greatest rivalries of all-time.

Justin: The buildup here had been well detailed and this was a highly anticipated showdown. Triple H had put Austin on the shelf for the year. Austin got some revenge a year later when he nearly killed the Game with a forklift. Since then, both men had cost the other World title matches, so things were at a boiling point heading into what was expected to be a brutal battle. The crowd was amped right from the entrances and there was a definite buzz in the arena for this one. This was the match that officially signaled to everyone that the real Stone Cold was now back in the house and he was ready to go balls to the wall. The first fall is a nice dichotomy to what would come, as the two men trade holds and work body parts to try and wear the other down for the more vicious falls still to come. After the first two falls, JR pointed out that Hunter had won Austin’s type of match and vice versa. At that point, the match was a classic, but there was still more to come as the cage lowered. Both men were ravaged and bloodied and just tried to outlast the other inside the steel. Triple H would barely eek out the win, and it was somewhat of an upset at the time, as Austin was heading to the main event of WrestleMania. The match was wonderfully done and was loaded with drama and excitement. This was just a masterpiece between two of the best. The match showed that Triple H was still one of the top dogs in the WWF and proved that Steve Austin was back in a big way.

Scott: Words cannot describe how much I love this match. It honestly goes down VERY close to Savage/Steamboat as my favorite match of all time. Two guys who know everything about how to produce a main event match with every ingredient possible. One of the few matches that felt like a title match without a title. Both men brought 100% of the hate and the violence to the match, and it anchored what was one of the greatest PPV’s in WWE history. I recommend this match to anyone and everyone.

WWF World Tag Team Champions The Dudley Boyz vs. Edge & Christian vs. The Hardy Boyz – TLC II (WrestleMania X-Seven)

Matt: Apparently these six just love hurting themselves and one another. Spike Dudley, Rhyno, and Lita all make appearances in this one. Being the most instrumental in the match, Rhyno assists his buddies Edge and Christian to help them regain tag team gold for their seventh reign in one year. The highlight of the match has to be Edge bringing Jeff down as he’s hanging off the belts with the spear. It’s a moment few hardcore fans will forget. While you’d think after a match like this, E&C would get a lengthy reign, but nope. Nearly three weeks later, they get stomped out by the Brothers of Destruction and never really recover as a team. PLEASE BRING THEM BACK, WWE! Another ***** match for 2001.

Justin: The three top teams over the past 12 months square off again on the biggest stage of the wrestling world. Rhyno, Spike and Lita would all eventually hit the ring and play a role in the bout, and I liked that as it added some chaos and excitement to an already great match. After a brutal war, Rhyno would hit the ring and prop Edge on his shoulders and carry him up to the belts, allowing E&C to retain their precious tag titles. The match was an all out war and in a way appropriately capped the glory run that these teams experienced over the last 16 months. They would continue to see success, but this sort of brings an end to their intense rivalry that has warred on from show to show. One year ago, these six men put this type of battle on the map and here they perfected it with another crazy classic.

Scott: Yet another chapter to the war between these three teams. One of many matches at one of the greatest WrestleManias of all time, this one was different because it didn’t have to carry the show as much as their first match the previous year. More great violence, more high-flying maneuvers. Edge & Christian cement their legacy with another big win over their rivals in another violent encounter in front of 68,000 fans.

WWF World Champion The Rock vs. Steve Austin – No-DQ Match (WrestleMania X-Seven)

Matt: I know it’s a commentator’s cliché, but now THIS is a main event anywhere in the world. In a sold-out Astrodome, the two biggest names of the day arguably at the peak of their popularity fight tooth and nail for thirty minutes. They trade Stunners, they trade Rock Bottoms, and then the impossible happens when Vince McMahon heads out to ringside. What is he going to do? He breaks up the pin on Austin after the Peoples Elbow! Now they start beating the Rock down with chairshots, but he refuses to quit! Austin opens up a can of chairshots all over Rock until finally the man is completely out and finished for the 1-2-3. Quite the dramatic finish and while the crowd thought Vince had turned good, there’s no way you could cheer for the guy who just killed the Rock with a barrage of chairshots. That’s not a hero. However, they cheer Austin anyway. Just an unbelievable moment in wrestling history ends the PPV as Austin and Vince share a beer together. It’s about ****¼ for me.

Justin: Who better to battle at the end of the biggest show of the modern era than Stone Cold and the Rock? The whole story heading in here is Austin’s obsession and desperation to become champion. Ever since he was taken out in 1999, Austin has been away from his belt and he was starting to crack. I liked how Austin is visibly frustrated throughout the match. I actually think they could have made his heel turn a bit more effective and subtle. The two men would bust out the bloody Sharpshooter spot from WrestleMania XIII and the crowd just goes nuts for it, but Austin was able to survive. I dug Austin’s desperation here as he, and the announcers, added a lot of importance to the championship by putting over how Austin needed it to live. I never cared for the finish here with Vince standing in the ring over Austin as he just beat on Rock with a chair. It helped advance Austin’s paranoid personality, but just took away from an epic match and moment. I really think they should have had Vince “accidentally” help Austin win the belt at WrestleMania, but still had Austin walk out a face with the top belt. His pop would have been stronger and it would have been a better moment to close out the show. Then, they could still do a cage match the next night on Raw, and that is where you have Austin and Vince officially join forces and complete the heel turn. I think that would have been more subtle and effective and not compromised what had been an all time classic. With a stronger ending, this was a perfect match for the time frame, but that ending bugs me enough to knock it down a peg. It is still a fantastic brawl with tremendous heat and commentary, thus putting it at the top of the list of greatest WrestleMania main events.

Scott: I really liked their title match two years earlier at WrestleMania XV. This one was amped up even more due to two things: the No DQ stipulation, and the fact that both men were big over faces going in. Obviously being in the heart of Texas, Austin was way more over which made the eventual heel turn maybe half work. The match itself is incredible and was a fitting capper to one of the greatest WrestleManias of all time.

WWF World Tag Team Champions Steve Austin & Triple H vs. Chris Benoit & Chris Jericho (Raw is War 5/21/01)

Matt: I remember this match like it was yesterday. This was good TV as Ric Flair might call it. Benoit and Jericho were my favorites at the time and to see them hang in there with the perennial main events as though they were equals was absolutely incredible. Like Scott said, everybody remembers this for Triple H’s first quad tear (and still finished the match!), but I remember it well for the satisfaction of seeing Benoit and Jericho finally putting one over not only on just the 2-Man Power Trip, but for every wrestler who said Benoit and Jericho weren’t good enough for the main event. And now that every combination from the main eventers in the Attitude Era had been burned out, this paved the way for some new future main eventers for the WWF. Easily a ****½ match in my book.

Justin: At the time, this fantastic tag match seemed to be a passing of the torch of sorts. Benoit & Jericho were the internet darlings that had been held down since the dawn of time. They were finally getting their chance to step up and run with the big boys, and that was to start with a decisive title win over the two top dogs in the company. The match was thrilling throughout and Triple H’s gruesome quad tear and subsequent gut wrenching Walls of Jericho only add to its legend. Jericho & Benoit take the titles from the Power Trip and it finally felt like the dawning of a new era. Unfortunately, it wouldn’t last very long.

Scott: One of Raw’s gems from 2001. Of course this match will be remember for the ripping of Triple H’s quad that kept him out for the rest of the year. Otherwise this match is pretty awesome. The San Jose crowd was off the charts for this one, which is rare considering California wrestling crowds are usually pretty weak. Great match, even if my favorite guy was lost for 8 months.

WWF World Tag Team Champions Chris Benoit & Chris Jericho vs. The Dudley Boyz vs. Edge & Christian vs. The Hardy Boyz – TLC III (Smackdown 5/24/01)

Matt: During this summer, Benoit and Jericho were my heroes. Seeing them run things on the babyface side was incredible. This was their punishment for taking the tag gold from Vince’s boys and they would pay a heavy price. For those who care about that sort of thing, this was the first TLC match and one of the few ladder matches ever on free TV at this point. And just like TLC matches promise, this was another wild and crazy affair with Benoit leaving the match injured half-way into it. When it looked like their tag title reign would be cut extremely short, Benoit toughed it out and returned to the match to pick up the storied victory for him and Jericho. One of three excellent MOTYC TV matches in ten days. At least ****½.

Justin: This is a tough one for me. On one hand, it was another thrilling, violent and reckless affair. On the other hand, it was proof that WWF was starting to panic a bit and was running their workhorses into the ground because of it. The same week in which they won the tag titles, Jericho & Benoit were forced to go right back out and battle in a crazy trainwreck for a taped TV show. While I am all for providing big time matches on TV, this one just smacked of excess. Many of the guys that went all out in these types of matches would end up with some hardcore injuries, and it was during this stretch that they were run out there at a crazy pace. With all that said, this is a hell of a match as they all smacked each other senseless and put on a dramatic bout for the SD fans. Jericho & Benoit would keep their belts, but Benoit would pay dearly in the weeks to come.

Scott: From 2001-03, its possible Smackdown was the better show than Raw. This was a main reason for it. It was very rare for Raw to have great matches like this. They had their share, but it always seemed like Smackdown put together the better matches, even if Raw had the star power. This match is not watched as much as the other TLC’s because those others are on PPV, but get the WWE Ladder Match DVD and you can really enjoy it.

WWF World Champion Steve Austin vs. Chris Benoit (Smackdown 5/31/01)

Matt: The match of TEN THOUSAND GERMAN SUPLEXES! That’s a little exaggerated, but still Austin took a lot of them in this match. Benoit gets his big chance to wow his hometown fans and boy does he. Just when it looks like Benoit has the edge with the Crippler Crossface, Vince comes out and takes a bunch of chairshots from Benoit. That’s all the distraction Austin needs as he schoolboys him up with a handful of tights for the victory. Kind of a lame finish to an otherwise awesome match. Something like ****½ here.

Justin: The mega push of Chris Benoit continued here as he and Austin tore each other apart in front of Benoit’s hometown fans. They would just wreck each other with German suplexes as the battle wore on. The crowd was off the hook here and it looked like Benoit was going to steal the title, but Austin would be the one to steal the victory after interference from Mr. McMahon. Benoit was proving he could hang with the top of the card stars, but a major injury would derail him at his peak.

Scott: Most definitely one of Smackdown’s forgotten matches and again because of what happened to Chris Benoit you will never see this match again unless you taped that Smackdown episode. I remember watching this match at home while recovering from Strep Throat, and it made me smile, even it if it hurt to do it. Austin was going all out as the heel champion and this was Benoit’s first legit shot as a babyface in WWE. They worked great together and minus the screwy ending, it would be almost perfect.

WWF World Champion Steve Austin vs. Kurt Angle (SummerSlam 2001)

Matt: With Benoit gone to get his neck fused, Jericho slipped back into the upper mid-card, and the Rock just now returning after the filming of the Scorpion King, Kurt Angle arises as the top babyface to defend the WWF against the WCW/ECW Alliance. I reviewed this match for the Kurt Angle mixtape and I had forgotten just how hard fought this match was. Lots of German suplexes and drama over the anklelock. Another bad DQ ending, but it worked out for Angle so he could have a title win in his hometown of Pittsburgh the next month at Unforgiven. As I said in the review, just an unbelievably awesome match on a string of ****½ matches.

Justin: After months of tension and jealousy, Austin and Angle finally squared off for the World title and for brand pride. Angle would get his share of suplexes in as he punishes Austin with seven straight Germans. After a super stiff Austin superplex, Angle would even kick out of multiple stunners, which was impressive and pushed the crowd over the edge. Austin would get desperate and bloody Angle with a nasty beating on the floor as he just hammered him with fists and bashing his head into the ring post repeatedly. Austin would also kill him with a suplex on the floor, but Angle was booked like a warrior here and he would hit a nasty belly to belly on the floor as well. After each man kicked out of the others finisher one more time, Austin’s desperation was too much and he smacked the ref. That drew Nick Patrick out and he calls for the BS DQ on Austin to save his title. The flurry at the end was pretty good even though the finish was a bit weak. In retrospect, it works out fine as furthering Austin’s paranoid character and building to a rematch the next month. This was a great bloody war between two men in their prime busting their asses to put on a great match. The crowd was rocking the whole way through and Angle was made out to be a beast. Before this show, it was yet to be seen if Angle could be a top level face, but his match proved he had what it took to connect with the fans.

Scott: This match was fun because of the chaos factor of the California crowd and the fact that it was the first time in his career that Kurt Angle was a legit babyface. I honestly wasn’t crazy about all the ref bumps, which kind of takes the grade down a little for me, but The emotion for this match is off the charts as you can see Angle, with dried blood on his face, completely beside himself that he should be WWF Champ, and the Alliance screwed him. A much needed rematch is coming. This was an awesome job by both men who played their roles perfectly and put together the match of the night.

World Heavyweight Champion The Rock vs. Chris Jericho (No Mercy 2001)

Matt: If I’m not mistaken, this is the only time during the thick of the InVasion angle where two WWF wrestlers really feuded with one another. Not to mention this was a big match for Jericho that seemed to catapult him as the first guy to become the “undisputed” champion. For some reason during the match, they had people believing Jericho had joined the Alliance with Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley coming out and sliding a chair in the ring, but that never went anywhere. All the same, excellent back and forth match with loads of drama. Like I said, a huge match for Jericho at least for the time being until Rock won the belt right back a few weeks later on Raw leading up to Survivor Series. Around ****-****¼ for me.

Justin: After years of being held down in both promotions despite being consistently over, Chris Jericho finally wins the big win and takes home his first World title. The story is clear from the start: can Jericho win the big match. Both men were pretty over here, but Rock out pops him in the entrances. However, as the match wore on, the crowd actually started turning towards Jericho and turning against the Rock. The coolest part of the match was the tons of flash bulbs going off as the two men first stared each other down and that actually continued throughout the bout. The atmosphere gave the contest a big match feel as did the commentary. The hottest near fall of the match would come when Jericho hit a Rock Bottom and Lionsault in succession. It was a great tease, because it was one of those moments where you assume he isn’t winning if he didn’t win there. Rock would fire back with a Rock Bottom on the announce table and, as the crowd started backing Jericho, Rock started acting a bit more heelish, which shows just what a pro he was. Jericho would come close again as he hit an awesome reversal by avoiding the People’s Elbow and turning Rock into the Walls of Jericho. That should have been the ending right there and Jericho would have been put over even stronger, but instead the actual finish ends up being a bit weaker. Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley would end up running in and inadvertently costing Rock the match when she tossed a chair in the ring. Rock took her out, but Jericho dropped him on the chair for the upset win. The crux of the continuation of the feud was Rock putting some doubt in Jericho’s mind about if he could have won cleanly or if he needed a chair to get it done. This was a great match and these two would actually put on even better ones in the coming months, including a couple of weeks later on Raw.

Scott: This was the match of the night as both men bring their all, particularly Jericho. once again proves doubters wrong and goes all out in a really great match with someone who everyone thought was a better wrestler than him. Maybe technically he is better than Rock, but unlike other main eventers throughout history he and Steve Austin did a great job of meshing with their opponent’s style to make the match better.

The Rock, Chris Jericho, Undertaker, Kane, and the Big Show vs. Steve Austin, Kurt Angle, Rob Van Dam, Booker T, and Shane McMahon – 5-on-5 Elimination Match (Survivor Series 2001)

Matt: Kind of a personal favorite for me. I’ve only been to one live WWE PPV and this was it. In a sort of “SCREW YOU” to Greensboro and the history behind that town, Vince decided that this was where he wanted to hammer the final nail in the coffin of WCW. You know what, good for him. The crowd was electric, all the stars were here, and it was just incredible to sit back and watch all this take place right in front of you. Also in a rare moment, I got to see Rock/Austin trade some stuff which didn’t happen except for on the BIG shows. Cool match and definitely an important match for wrestling history – even though WCW was technically declared dead eight months earlier. With all that star power, it couldn’t possibly have been bad. I’d say it was around ****.

Justin: After six months of battling, the Invasion all came down to one match filled with the top five guys from each side. Well, nine and Shane McMahon but Shane definitely busts his ass to fit in here. To add to the angle, Heyman does get a good, and accurate, rant in on Vince about his predatory ways when he comes to other promotions. Rock and Austin started it off right out of the gate and the crowd was digging it. RVD was booked strong throughout once again but Jericho eliminated him in a continuation of the huge push he was currently receiving. As Austin and Rock battled at the end, the big shocker occurred when Jericho snapped and let a personal vendetta blind him as he slid in the ring and pasted Rock with a chair. The crowd went absolutely berserk but Rock was able to stay alive. We then got another swerve when Kurt Angle returned, took out Austin and gave Rock and Team WWF the win. The Alliance would be no more and Vince came out to celebrate his win. Rock was now clearly positioned as the top gun in the company and he had a ready-made feud with Jericho. The way I understood it was that Angle was sent undercover by Vince to help screw up the Alliance. So, with that said, I thought it was fairly logical and not just a series of haphazard turns. The whole thing becomes a bit clearer the next night when Angle is repositioned as Vince’s top guy for helping save the WWF. It would be a key part of Angle’s heel turn as well as the crowd still boos him and he takes umbrage since he was the self proclaimed savior of the WWF. With all that said, I really enjoyed the match as the stakes were high and everyone delivered. The crowd was rocking and all ten guys busted it to deliver a fun match.

Scott: This match is laid out like most matches that are 45 minutes long: The first 10 minutes are exciting, the middle 30 minutes are quite slow, and the last 5 minutes are off the charts. As exciting as this match was, due to all the logic holes in the storyline, it takes away some of the juice of the match. Really the end with Austin/Rock carries the match in general.

And that’s all for now. Let us know what you think and maybe some picks that we missed that you enjoyed! Next Saturday, we will unveil another ten matches from the year 2002! Don’t miss it!

It’s hard to believe that time has flown so quickly, but ladies and gentlemen we have come to the end of another decade. It feels like we just celebrated a new millennium too.

The end of the ’80s saw the absolute demise of the territory days thanks to nationwide cable giants Ted Turner and Vince McMahon leading the way. The end of the ’90s saw the WWF rise up from near bankruptcy by making new stars while the former wrestling leader WCW’s star power began to die a quick death along with some big business decisions between Ted Turner and AOL/Time Warner that would send WCW to the guillotine forever. Into the 2000s, the wrestling business at least in North America saw competition go down to his absolute lowest point ever as Vince had finally achieved his life goal – to monopolize the wrestling business. Upstart companies like Total Nonstop Action and Ring of Honor were both able to receive cable deals within their first ten years (TNA only in two!), but fail in comparison when you consider the firm grip Vince McMahon and WWE have on wrestling. I’m sorry, sports entertainment.

But enough about that, I’m here to talk about the good times we’ve had in this decade. I’ve compiled a list of 100 of the absolute best matches I’ve seen that not only have a lasting impact on our business, but on the fans themselves. Matches that people reflect back on with good thoughts when they’re hanging out with their friends and reliving those moments. So as to make sure every year gets a fair share of matches, there will be ten matches for each year. You may think the year 2000 is the greatest year in wrestling history (and it quite possibly could be), but let’s try and give every year a chance to be good.

I (Matt) made the list, but I’ve got my boys Justin and Scott to help me out with their valued thoughts. Hope you enjoy!

WWF World Champion Triple H vs. Cactus Jack – Street Fight (Royal Rumble 2000)

Matt: One word: VIOLENT. This match was violent from bell to bell. I can’t recall a match that had taken the violence to this extreme since the Hell in a Cell at King of the Ring 1998. Sure there was the Mankind/Rock “I Quit” match from the ‘99 Rumble, but it didn’t quite take it this far as both men received a lot of punishment as where Mankind was taking much of the beating in the “I Quit” match. Incredible drama, incredible atmosphere – just an incredible contest with Triple H in a career-elevating encounter. Plus I loved the Cactus Jack character and the way they pulled off the return was brilliant. Easily a ***** match from me.

Justin: This was an epic street fight that really put Triple H on the map as a bonafide big time star. The push was there before the match, but the way he busted his ass and went toe to toe with Cactus in a brutal environment really solidified his standing with the fans as a legit player. Cactus stepped up as well and really put Hunter over as he was nearing the end of his career (at the time anyway). The match itself was brutal and also had a nice homage to the year before with the handcuff spot halfway through. Cactus kicking out of the first Pedigree was great drama as well. Great match here that served its purpose on many levels.

Scott: The match that made Triple H “The Game”. In front of a raucous crowd at Madison Square Garden, The first “Big 4″ PPV after Steve Austin’s hiatus began was somewhat in limbo. After Cactus/Triple H tore the house down for 20 minutes, and bled all over the arena. Triple H got a nasty injury when he was backdropped on a wood pallet and a huge sliver of wood jabbed into his calf. The match is a classic and showed that Triple H was going to be a player for years to come and Cactus Jack, like he did with Rock in 1999, created a superstar.

DX & The Radicalz (w/Eddie Guerrero) vs. The Rock, Cactus Jack, Too Cool & Rikishi (Raw is War, 2/7/00)

Matt: Live from Dallas, wrestling is finally alive again in this former dead town after all the Von Erich tragedies from the ’80s and ’90s with an extremely HOT ten man tag that saw the brand new Radicalz group (Benoit, Malenko, Saturn, Guerrero) jump ship from WCW and show up right in the main event spot to battle some of the top faces in the company with Triple H and X-Pac by their side. At the time, this was a HUGE thrill for me to see my favorites from WCW abandon ship for the much more interesting company. Without a doubt, one of the best Raw matches I’ve ever seen.

Justin: This was a flat out fun, fast paced balls to the wall match that had the crowd rocking from bell to bell. It featured 10 of the hottest stars in wrestling and took place during the peak of popularity for the business. All ten men busted their asses and it was just one of those magical nights where it all came together into a masterpiece. It also helped establish the Radicalz in that it showed WWF fans that they could hang with the big boys and really deliver the goods in the ring. Also, this match featured the great return of Kane, with Paul Bearer, as he came out to assault X-Pac. The pop for his entrance was huge. One of the best Raw matches of all time.

Scott: A forgotten match in many people’s minds, but it was the first real display of the 4 new free agent studs that arrived in WWE. Chris Benoit, Dean Malenko, and Perry Saturn arrived with much fanfare from the floundering WCW, and with Eddie Guerrero on the shelf, Triple H and X-Pac joined them to face an unusual team of Rock, Kane, Too Cool, and Rikishi. On paper it’s a typical throwaway Raw main event, but somehow the crowd that night was off the charts and that extra energy of mayhem that a 10-man tag brings led to one of Raw’s greatest main events. Unfortunately we’ll probably never see it on any DVD’s since Benoit’s on it but if you’re lucky enough to have taped Raw that night and still have it, throw it in. You’ll be surprised at how good it really is.

WWF World Champion Triple H vs. Cactus Jack – Hell in a Cell (No Way Out 2000)

Matt: In the lead-up to the match, I wondered if anything could top not only the Mankind/UT Hell in a Cell, but the insane street fight that had just happened at the Rumble. What could they possibly do to make this better? Well it wasn’t as memorable as the HIAC in ‘98, but it was a nice way to say goodbye to Mick. Well, if he had actually left forever at the end of this match. This was another brutal affair but not quite as brutal as the street fight. There was FIRE involved and a nasty fall through the cage, but nothing we hadn’t seen already done better before. Still about a ****½ match.

Justin: The follow up to the RR street fight was another stiff, violent affair that continued to push Hunter to the top of the business. I prefer the street fight to this one, but it was still really well worked and filled with drama. The big bump at the end was a cool visual and the sight of Cactus emerging from the whole like a zombie was awesome. Jack’s return to action a month later takes a way a bit of the emotion that was here, but even without that it is still a great match and one of the best of the year.

Scott: I had the privilege of being at this show live in Hartford and it was ugly. Being the only guy in my entire section wearing a Triple H “Not for the Innocent” t-shirt and my girlfriend at the time wearing the Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley baby tee, I was definitely the underdog in terms of the crowd. On top of the fact Big Show had become #1 contender just a few moments before; the chance of Mick Foley winning was a pretty good possibility. The match didn’t reach the level of violence that the previous month’s war at the Garden had, but definitely still had the emotion and violence. Triple H retires Foley (for a month anyway) and Triple H is THE MAN.

WWF World Tag Team Champions Buh Buh Ray & D-Von Dudley vs. Edge & Christian vs. The Hardy Boyz – Ladder Match (WrestleMania 2000)

Matt: Some people may disagree on this one, but man was this awesome. People loved the ladder match between the Hardyz and E&C back at No Mercy, but the Dudleyz added the monkey wrench this feud needed: tables. In this match, Jeff pulls off the first huge Swanton off the ladder through a table spot back when it was fresh. I just love watching this match. So much fun, but it had to hurt a lot. About ****¼ from me.

Justin: After the No Mercy ladder war put Edge, Christian and the Hardyz on the map, they were put in a rematch here on the biggest stage in wrestling. Oh, and also add to the mix the extreme table obsessed red hot heel tag team champions to the mix for fun. The Dudleyz were super over as heels here as they kept punishing women and driving them through tables each week. Heading into the match, E&C were the bland underdogs as they really had just sort of floating around in the months leading in. It was this win that really launched them into their role as a dominant tag team. Their heel charisma would being oozing out following the show and the rest was history. This super stiff, violent car crash would set the template for the TLC wars of the next decade.

Scott: The match that made all 3 of these teams what they became and what they are now. Without Steve Austin, this WrestleMania needed to be a little more creative to bring the buyrate. Besides the 4-way main event and the Euro-continental Triple Threat match, this was the match that will forever be remembered that night in Anaheim. All three teams were talented, but this was a chance where they really went all out to entertain. Edge & Christian win their first of many ladder matches together, and this match becomes the one that WrestleMania XVI will be remembered.

WWF World Champion Triple H vs. The Rock – (Backlash 2000)

Matt: Finally, these two meet one on one – even though Shane McMahon had to be special ref to guarantee some sort of trickery and shenanigans along the way. All the same, Steve Austin coming out and destroying the McMahons and the Stooges was pretty satisfying. Yeah, this match is like a Snickers bar to me. ****¼

Justin: A manic, epic blow off to a lengthy chase by the Rock. Everyone thought Rock would win at WrestleMania, but Hunter kept the title as Vince thought he could garner a big buy rate for this show by holding off on a singles match and a title change. Oh, and it also featured the return of Steve Austin too. These two went all out and delivered a classic brawl with some great drama and tension. Austin comes out to a massive pop, cracks Hunter and gives Rock the title. Great stuff from two of the all time best.

Scott: After getting screwed over at WrestleMania, Rock gets one final chance in front of a raucous Washington DC crowd. Add to the fact that Steve Austin, seen on camera once since November may be making an appearance and you have the makings of a classic. Both guys were on top of their game at this moment, and the feud was electric. Sure there was way too much McMahon involved, but that didn’t take away from the match itself. Great overall match with a super hot ending.

WWF World Champion The Rock vs. Triple H – 60-Minute Ironman Match (Special Ref: Shawn Michaels)
(Judgment Day 2000)

Matt: Few people thought Rock and HHH could go 60 minutes without it sucking. Boy were those people wrong. They went all out and wild for this one culminating in the dramatic return of the Undertaker to chokeslam the McMahons and DX. Pretty sweet match. I would go around ****¾ if it had had a better finish than UT costing Rock a DQ with a chokeslam to HHH. Oh well. Still amazing.

Justin: The Backlash rematch was one that not many fans and pundits had faith in. Not many people thought Rock and Hunter could deliver a top notch contest over the length of an hour. Well, they proved everyone wrong as they put on a tremendously fun overbooked car crash for sixty minutes. They featured a lot of falls to keep things interesting and mixed in some nice psychology along the way. The return of the Undertaker was great as well, especially when you include Vince’s crazy walk to avoid him. The timing gets screwed up at the end, but that is a minor quibble. This was a great match and continued the streak of tremendous world title PPV matches.

Scott: Pretty much the same comments as their last match, except the surprising fact that in only the second 60-minute match in WWE history, both men let themselves get pinned, counted out, DQ’ed and everything else. Shawn Michaels as the guest referee adds drama and intrigue also, as the last time he refereed a match he superkicked Rock out of the WWE Title. In my opinion a much better Iron Man match than the HBK/Bret Hart match from WrestleMania XII. Then there was the specter of the Undertaker returning after being gone since the previous August and you have a great overall performance from everyone.

Triple H vs. Chris Jericho – Last Man Standing Match
(Fully Loaded 2000)

Matt: When I think of this match, I always think back to the night Jericho “embarrassed” HHH and beat him for the belt to a HUGE pop. Since it was a fast count by Hebner, HHH got the finish overturned and the belt returned back to him. When I think of this match, I always think of ALL the stuff Jericho said about Stephanie (bottom-feeding trash bag ho) and how eventually Triple H was going to get his revenge. Well this is that match. Jericho had a beating coming, but he didn’t just lie there and take it. He fought back tooth and nail and showed Triple H he had some BALLS. Big career-maker match for Jericho. I might even go all the way with this one because it ruled your face off, but for now I’ll say ****¾.

Justin: Chris Jericho’s WWF coming out party took place here as he stands toe to toe with the red hot game. They battled and bloodied each other until neither man could stand. Hunter barely escaped with the win here, but Jericho gained a ton of respect and cache despite the loss. He proved he could hang with the big boys and deliver a main event quality match. Sadly, this would be the closest Hunter allowed him to victory in any of their endless matches. Hunter kept his hot streak rolling here and continued to keep his crown as the best big match performer of the year.

Scott: This was Chris Jericho’s coming out party as a WWE superstar. His first real high profile match since arriving the previous August, Jericho meets the Game, still on a roll after his hot feud with the Rock. To add to it, they put in a stipulation where the loser can’t get up on a 10-count. The brawl was pretty solid but the only bad part was the winner. I love Triple H, but having Jericho win would have been a big boost for him at that moment. Otherwise it’s a solid match that defined the year 2000: Great wrestling even if the storyline wasn’t too intricate.

WWF World Tag Team Champions Edge & Christian vs. The Hardy Boyz vs. Buh Buh Ray & D-Von Dudley – TLC Match (SummerSlam 2000)

Matt: Surely they can’t outperform the last two ladder matches, but what do you know – they did. The ladders were longer, the falls were WAY more dramatic, and everyone ended up being a casualty. I highly doubt Buh Buh Ray’s fall off the 20 foot ladder through several tables will ever leave my mind. Easy ***** classic.

Justin: The follow up to WrestleMania was equally as crazy and had a bigger feel to it as all three teams were more established and over as well. E&C retain and start to pull away from the pack as the premier team in wrestling. Great stuff once again.

Scott: Pretty much an extension of the match at WrestleMania, except the tables and chairs are officially part of the match. How they were able to actually amp up the violence factor to make it even better that in April. Although E&C won again, the Hardyz really deserve a good portion of the credit. They really took the bumps more than either of the other two, I think. This trend would continue over the next couple of years as the tag division went back to its 80’s golden era in 2000.

WWF World Champion The Rock vs. Kurt Angle – No-DQ Match (No Mercy 2000)

Matt: Rock – Hogan – Austin – Bret – Flair – Angle. All world champions, but only one of these legendary figures have captured the gold in their first YEAR in the business. That one man is Kurt Angle. Another match where both men went back and forth in and out of the ring for 20 minutes with a big ending. Outside of being a parody of an All-American character throughout 2000, in this match he showed us that he could not only wrestle, but he could fight. While during his first reign as champion he was booked as a lucky wrestler, there was no denying he earned the gold on this night. I’ve given this ***½ before, but the importance of the match overshadows the “lack” of stars.

Justin: A crazy brawl that saw Kurt Angle establish himself as a main event star and cap off one of the greatest year long stretches in wrestling history. Rock made Kurt look great here and Angle’s celebration was classic stuff. Great match that helped establish a mega star.

Scott: A surprisingly good match and a huge upset as Kurt Angle won his first WWE Title against the Rock who’d had the best single year of his career. Rock was a pro at carrying matches now so Angle, technically the better wrestler, didn’t have to really do more than his part. The Rikishi run-in ruined the flow a little although it did precipitate the upset. Overall a good match and one that they better a few months down the road.

WWF World Champion Kurt Angle vs. The Rock vs. The Undertaker vs. Steve Austin vs. Triple H vs. Rikishi – Hell in a Cell (Armageddon 2000)

Matt: Oh no they didn’t just chokeslam Rikishi off a cage down into the bed of a truck. YES THEY DID. Two guys in a cell was fun enough, but six of the top superstars? That’s crazy. Everybody pulled out all the stops in this one and together they put on heck of a show. It’s a personal favorite even if some people don’t think it’s one of the greatest ever. I absolutely loved the ending where everybody hits their finishers and Angle squeezing out the win at the last second. Around at least ****.

Justin: A great Cell match with top notch star power to carry it along. All the big players are in the mix here as Angle manically tries to escape with his title. Rikishi takes the big bump off the match as Taker chokeslams him off the roof and onto a truck. The match was the idea of Commissioner Foley and he delivered a spectacle. Angle barely retains his title as he wins the match while surrounded by destroyed bodies of main eventers strewn around him. This classic caps off an epic year for big time PPV matches.

Scott: Ah, a guilty pleasure of mine. I always like any kind of cage match because there’s an added aspect that other matches don’t have. This match in particular had that chaotic bonus of 6 big time money guys (well 5 and Rikishi) fighting for the WWE Title. Austin and Triple H ripped into each other like two animals and that feud never slowed down. Angle survives a vicious beatdown and retains his title. A great match that’s forgotten in PPV annals.

Next Saturday, we will bring you ten more great matches from the year 2001! Let us know what you think so far of the column and fill us in on some of your favorite matches of the last decade!

However, after awhile the sport gets stale and story-lines get a tad predictable and boring- which is sort of what the Smackdown vs Raw franchise has been the last couple of years.

That isn’t the case with the latest in the franchise, Smackdown vs Raw 2010, and our good friends over at THQ decided to throw a little costume launch event to celebrate not only the release of the game, but also allow us to appreciate it, for the latest in the franchise finally rises above the rest and shows it can still perform.

On a warm Wednesday night competition winners from the Gamespot and PALGN forums ate and drank with fellow staff from THQ’s PR as well as various website writers from IGN AU and Gamespot AU and of course OXCGN.

With Playstation 3s set up running the latest title in the wrestling franchise Smackdown vs Raw 2010 and many wrestlers of old and new showing their faces as well, the night was filled with laughs and high risk maneuvers all round.

Note that when I mean wrestlers old and new I really mean attendees dressed up as their favorite wrestler.

We had Mankind, Carlito, Yokozuna as well as some originals, Mr. Australia, and many more.

The facepaint was also in full ’slip, slop, slap’ with myself getting some glorious blue/orange on my face in imitation of Jeff Hardy, Adam Johnson getting some Blue Steel happening, Golddust making some commotion and we even had The Joker spoil the party for a while.

As a prize for going through the effort to make a costume and/or get some facepaint everyone was treated courtesy of THQ to a free copy of Smackdown vs Raw 2010 the night before release as well as some excellent Limited Edition Tin covered items which goes nice with my fellow Collector Editions and a copy of the Smackdown 10th Year anniversary DVD, which is covered in 3 DVDs and features some of the greatest moment in Smackdown history over the past decade.

It was a great little initiative and a kind gesture by THQ giving everyone these nice little presents for attending the launch costume party. Not only did every one manage to nab a copy for themselves both the overall costume winner and facepaint winners nabbed something a little special as well courtesy of Sony- a Playstation 3 Slim.

Mr. Australia took out best costume and won a PS3 Slim and a gaming monitor LCD, whilst the best face paint Adam “Blue Steel” Johnson took home a nice PS3 slim also.

I just missed out to Blue Steel in the facepaint competition but I wasn’t worried. Why? Because I got to play SvsR2010 ahead of its release, got to enjoy dressing up and putting on facepaint and have a chat with the guys over at IGN AU, Gamespot AU and some of the promo girls that were wandering around on the night.

It was great to see almost everyone getting into the spirit of the sport and dressing up and just getting involved in the night’s festivities.I would like to give a big thanks to THQ AU for inviting OXCGN to the costume party, as well as giving away the free gifts and also to Sony for getting involved and providing the 2 PS3 Slims as prizes.

It’s great to see Sony do some more for the community and getting involved in doing a bit more promotional work for supporting the console here in Australia. Again a big thanks to everyone involved in making this happen and I hope to see more events like these promoting the games.

Now that I’ve got my copy of Smackdown vs Raw 2010, I can see many sleepless Saturday nights staying in and having amazing competitions with my mates in Triple Threat matches, Fatl 4-Way and Championship Scrambles matches.

Stay tuned to OXCGN in the following days for our review on the latest and greatest game in the franchise!

[ED: A big shout-out to Paul and Candice at THQ, and especially the girls at Mango, Annabelle and Katlin for making us feel like we're part of the family when attending these events. They know how to work the room, deal with the events and make sure everything flows according to plan, yet still have a fun time doing so. Hats off a warm welcome also to Katlin, great to see you in the 'big-smoke', great stuff and enjoy the gaming industry]
