Electronic pioneers – Fuck Buttons - have for long experimented with breaking boundaries of electronic possibilities. Some good, some bad, some unlistenable and some like beamed from another planet to wreak havoc on us mortals.

“Space Mountain” touches on the same soundscapes as Detroit legend – Jeff Mills – has been experimenting with for years, and it bears an extremely close resemblance to Track 4 on Jeff Mills’ multi limited – and dead hard to get – Axis 9 release or even on his production of “Enforcement” on the even harder to get Basic Channel #1!

In short – “Space Mountain” – is complete spellbinding experimentation. A lesson in restraint, and a lesson in taking a sound, and drive it to the point of no return…….and that’s without ever bringing in a kick!

Den underjordiska technomusikens Pavlov har ett sadistiskt förhållande till högtalarmembran.

EN MAN SITTER på ett kafé. En radio står på i bakgrunden. Plötsligt avbryts musiken och en röst berättar att en meteor kommer att kollidera med jorden om exakt en timme. Planeten kommer att utplånas. Ingen kommer att överleva. Mannen, som heter Edward, ber om påtår och börjar granska människorna vid de andra borden.

Så inleds boken »The Eyes of Edward Molton« som den amerikanske technomakaren och discjockeyn Jeff Mills försökt skriva färdigt de senaste fem åren.

— Jag får skrivkramp av att vara musiker. Varje gång jag kommer på ett nytt uppslag, något som Edward upptäcker hos de andra kafégästerna, gör jag en låt om det i stället. Jag har till och med spelat in ett stycke som heter »Kabstonic Curve« och handlar om banan som får meteoren att kollidera med jorden.

Apparaterna i Jeff Mills studio vibrerar av samma apokalyptiska stämning. Ända sedan han var radiopratare i Detroit i mitten av åttiotalet, och hamrade på en synt samtidigt som han lät Nitzer Ebb, Parliament och Giorgio Moroder snurra på skivtallriken, har han haft ett sadistiskt förhållande till högtalarmembran. För fem år sedan bildade han duon Underground Resistance med sin kompis Mike Banks, mer känd som Mad Mike, och blev en legend på den underjordiska technoscenen. Tolvor som »The Punisher« och »Nation to Nation« står långt fram i varje skivsamling med seriös rytmkänsla. Men när Jeff ville bli mer experimentell och Mike diggade mjuk house gick de skilda vägar. Numera driver Jeff etiketterna Axis, Purpose Maker och Running från sin lägenhet i centrala Chicago. Men han får sina största inkomster genom att turnera som discjockey.

— Jag reser ensam. Jag lever ensam. Det måste man göra för att växa som musiker.

»Minimal Nation«, ett album han spelade in tillsammans med detroitkompisen Robert Hood, innehöll några av de mest hiskeliga ljudsekvenser som producerats av USA:s technoelit på nittiotalet.

— Vi utgick från samma idé som fysiologen Pavlov när han fick hundar att dregla genom att ringa i en klocka, berättar Jeff. Om man spelar samma sekvens om och om igen kan man få folk på ett dansgolv att flippa ut totalt när man avbryter den. Till slut dansar de till tystnaden lika mycket som till musiken.

På nya CD:n »Mix-Up Vol. 2«, ett DJ-set inspelat på klubben Liquid Room i Tokyo, håller Jeff en drös japaner i samma järngrepp. Han blandar sina egna kompositioner med Joey Beltram, DJ Skull och andra hårdingar. Ofta spelar han bara en minut av varje låt.

— Essensen av ett musikstycke är sällan längre än ett par minuter. För mig har techno alltid handlat om att krama musten ur skivsamlingen.

Few cities in the world can claim to have produced as many legends as Detroit.

From Motown through to todays Techno stars – Detroit has consistently drummed out untouchable talent much to the envy of many other cities. Over the last two decades its producer/DJ roster has mostly consisted of the likes of Derrick May, Juan Atklins, Underground Resistance, Jeff Mills and Carl Craig aka 69 (aka a tons of other pesudonyms) flying the steely soundscapes of Motor City.

Detroits fascination with vinyl seems never ending despite the fact the rest of the world having turned mostly digital. Above brigade swears by the black stuff, and insists of having 1210’s installed when playing.

Carl Craig – has just released an extreeeemely limited edition box set on vinyl only entitled – “The Legendary Adventures Of A Filter King” – which comes packed in 5 x 12″ on coloured vinyl containing 69 classics and some unreleased mixes. In fact – the box is so limited it’s only been pressed in 400 copies for the world with mastering by D&M Berlin.

If you have money to burn – the set will part you with nothing less than 125,-  UK Pounds, but for the time being you can sample some tastes in shape of the unreleased track – “Poi Et Pas” – and a the classic 69 track – “Ladies & Gentlemen”.

As usual – Detroit doesn’t do things by halves!

Come scritto più in alto, gli Underground Resistance sono un collettivo musicale di Detroit, sono stati e sono attualmente la formazione techno più schierata e attiva politicamente, lo si può intuire già dal fatto che amino definirsi collettivo.

Il loro schieramento anti-capitalista è talmente forte, che li ha portati a ripudiare  in qualsiasi modo la politica delle etichette main-stream, e a fare della techno uno strumento rappresentativo dell’alienazione vissuta nella Motor-City, per gli U.R. la musica non è mai fine a se stessa ma bisogna unire l’utile al dilettevole, quindi la musica per promuovere l’attivismo politico.

Gli U.R. iniziano a produrre musica negli anni ‘80, la formazione iniziale vede Jeff Mills e “Mad” Mike Banks che si uniscono proprio durante il periodo di massima recessione negli Stati Uniti, in una Detroit in piena crisi. Successivamente si unì al collettivo anche Robert “Noise” Hood.

Nella metà degli anni ‘80 si arrivò a presuppore che il collettivo Underground Resistance fosse correlato alle Pantere Nere (attivisti e promotori del “Potere Nero”), Mills confermò alcuni legami in una intervista.

La maggior parte delle produzioni Underground Resistance, sono state rilasciate da Mills, Hood e Banks sotto vari esperimenti collaborativi o come progetti solisti.

Nel 1992 Mills & Hood lasciano il collettivo, per concentrarsi sulle loro carriere personali e farsi conoscere meglio in tutto il mondo.

Mike Banks continuò invece la sua attività nel collettivo, rilasciando capolavori come “Return of Acid Rain,” “Message to the Majors,” e “Galaxy to Galaxy” sotto alias Underground Resistance.

Molti brani UR furono spesso rilasciati anche su altre etichette.

Nel 1999 l’entrata di DJ Rolando nel collettivo vede l’U.R. raggiungere il successo commerciale con la traccia “The Knight & The Jaguar”, traccia in circolazione nei club ancora oggi sotto vari remix e cover.

Nel 2000 i Kraftwerk rilasciarono un EP contenente i remix del loro operato all’expo di Hanover, collaborando con alcuni componenti dell’U.R., i quali tuttavia non furono citati all’interno del booklet con il loro vero nome, bensì con i numeri di catalogo dell’etichetta U.R., quindi: 035 – DJ Rolando 038 – Mike Banks 039 – Andre Holland 044 – Gerald Mitchel.

Nel 2002 i Kraftwerk suonano nelle loro performance più volte il remix di “Planet of Visions” proprio ad opera dei componenti dell’Underground Resistance.

Nel 2006 Remixano anche un pezzo per i Depeche Mode, “People are People”.

Desde Detroit, se extendió al este y al oeste de Estados Unidos como un virus, utilizando microchips, circuitos y cables. Es mutante, y dividido entre cada una de sus propias características – ghetto duro, profundo, y dubero, minimalista, melódico y ambiental, cargado de percusiones, y sonidos ácidos – todos diferentes, pero todos con la marca indeleble del Detroit techno siempre estampado en sus genes.

Lo que comenzó como un proyecto después de la escuela para Derrick May, Juan Atkins y Kevin Saunderson a mediados de la década de 1980, se convirtió en uno de los géneros más apasionantes de la música moderna que conoce el hombre. Un cuarto de siglo más tarde, el techno es tan emocionante como lo fue siempre.

La tecnología, la electrónica, y los sueños de muchos han contribuido a su evolución, pero ¿cómo hemos llegado hasta aquí? Un intento de construir una línea de tiempo para cualquier género musical sería una tarea colosal, por eso hablaremos estrictamente de techno y no profundizaremos en la cantidad de variaciones que tiene este genero.

When Jesse Saunders dropped the first release on his fledgling label Jes Say Records in 1984 it’s hard to say if anyone could have predicted that the music would live up to the track’s name.  Of course the heads can argue into the night about which was the really the very first House record, but On and On was without a doubt among the first off the block, and for anyone who has come of age over the last 20 years the genre it helped to kick-start is arguably as ubiquitous an artform as Rock n Roll was by the end of the ’60s, with similarly variable results .  What’s especially striking now, however, 25 years on, is how prominent the vocal is in Saunders’ track.

In a recent Resident Advisor interview Jeff Mills (perhaps the ultimate auteur of ‘pure’ machine music for the 1990s) recalls the difficulties that he and other American DJs faced in Europe when playing House music.  “I can remember very clearly taking things out of my record box”, he notes, “because even if it was Chicago house they didn’t want to hear the voice of Xavier Gold or Jamie Principle and things like that.”  So in 2009, as Techno plumbs ever darker, more suffocating depths, it’s reassuring to see its Windy City sibling still singing its own cause.  It’s a contrast perfectly summed up in the still zeitgeist defining techno powerhouse (literally) that is Berlin’s Berghain club.  While Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock et al pound their ‘true techno music’ in the cavernous, forbidding main room, the Panorama Bar above plays the part of Paradiso to the Inferno downstairs.

And Reboot’s new release on Ricardo Villalobos’s Sei Es Drum label is ready made for those Panorama Bar dawns.  The concept is simple enough to cause derision in some circles, Frank Heinrich adding little more than a delicate Latino shuffle and a subdued thud to what appears to be Simone Bittencourt de Oliveira’s rendition of ‘Pra não dizer que não falei das flores’, a Brazilian dictatorship-bating torch song composed in 1968 by Geraldo Vandré.  But simplicity is not always to be sniffed at, and the back story is almost irrelevent.  It’s the sheer elegance of the track that sweeps you away.

Around the 5 minute mark the vocal is left to stand shamelessly alone.  The crowd joins in, swept up in the moment.  The bass returns, preventing the lilting refrain from floating into the ether.  It actually is a soul thing, and in Panorama Bar this summer, when the sun comes up and (as is tradition) the blinds are thown open for just a few seconds, it is this song that should be playing.

Short one this week. Last three 1500 word treatises left me word-dry, all bones that creak meager vowels which mean to but cannot properly represent music and its rude effects. May exit this one having left a similarly long trail, but if so, rest assured, it’s unintended.

Reinstated myself into the rush of Detroit techno last week. Felt my blood cook in ways long lost. Particularly wished to be a mere dot of rhythm in Jeff Mills’ sprawling invention of a brand new heartbeat, Mix-Up Vol. 2: LiveMix at Liquid Room, Tokyo—like acting as a punctuation mark in Red Harvest, intending to separate but regardless blasted by the heat of the surrounding words. By the surrounding onslaught of two records in maniacal sync, driven over a Benzedrine pulse.

JEFF MILLS: “SEGMENT 3″

A live record in which there are manifold mistakes which are singled out by detractors. But like Berry Gordy, or whatever they turned him into in that Jacksons movie made years ago, I love mistakes I love the sound of fucking up I love how a young Michael Jackson screams, “Just look over your shoulders!” as though by the sheer pained force of that voice the human body could contort in such a way to look over both shoulders simultaneously and see Jackson from both angles.

Maybe to others this is incompetence but to me when Jeff Mills fucks up as a DJ is when he is most compelling as a DJ, where for a brief moment everything slides off its intended curve and indulges in a sweet chaos synonymous with giving birth to something new.

Which is the intent of the DJ set. To morph seasoned visions into young eyes that constantly dart from object to object, endlessly seeking new sensory input. The flaws serve to make the enlightenment achieved seem worked for, not reached without the necessary bruises and cracks in the veneer.

They make techno, often accused of being soulless and mechanical, impossibly human.

“Underground Resistance (commonly abbreviated to UR) is a musical collective from Detroit, Michigan, in the United States of America. They are the most militantly political example of modern Detroit Techno, with a grungy, four-track musical aesthetic and a strictly anti-mainstream business strategy. They have exerted their portion of Detroit Techno’s cultural influence towards promoting political activism.

“Begun in the late 1980s by Jeff Mills and “Mad” Mike Banks, UR related the aesthetics of early Detroit Techno to the complex social, political, and economic circumstances which followed on from Reagan-era inner-city economic recession, producing uncompromising music geared toward promoting awareness and facilitating political change. Later Robert “Noise” Hood joined the collective. . .”

Techno is black music that originated in Detroit.. but somewhere along the line (at least in Toronto, but probably in general too, in the West), it became dominated by white people. What happened? The Hot Sauce crew went to an underground Detroit Techno party recently and we were among the small handful of people who don’t belong to the camp of white.
