This morning my husband picked up some Lion’s mane mushrooms at a local farmers’ market.  I love these things.  They are really tasty.  They also have a lovely texture.  Much like a child, I must touch things.  And these mushrooms are just lovely to touch. They almost feel like fabric.

It’s really fun to cut them up too.  Just because they don’t slice the way a crimini mushroom does (or an enoki, or oyster, or white mushroom).  They’re much different than the normal mushrooms to which I’m accustomed and I love to work with them.  They are so lovely (and expensive) that we just saute them with a little olive oil and a little garlic (and maybe a bit of salt and pepper) and leave them be.  It’s really funny because growing up, you couldn’t make me touch a mushroom.  Now I’m going out of my way for stuff like these lion’s mane mushrooms.

This evening I ended up at Borders (my absolute favorite bookstore, I really hope they can get on better financial ground.  buying books online is cheaper, but nothing can compare to getting to walk around my local Borders with a cup of coffee from their cafe picking out interesting looking books) and saw this flyer on the community bulletin board.

Why wouldn’t you spend an extra minute on this?  Wasn’t anyone around who could identify the misspelling? For God’s sake, there are only TWO WORDS  at the top and one is misspelled! How embarrassing.

I love this next thing.  No, it’s not the creepy bear.  I’ll get to the creepy bear next. At Urban Outfitters (which is a ridiculous store.  seriously, I can buy much better clothes – better made, better looking – at H&M and pay much less money), I saw what is possibly one of the most frivolous, hilarious things.  A bubble calendar.  It’s a calendar with a bubble on each day (like bubble wrap bubble).  I told Thing 1 and her friend and they both said that they would end up popping each bubble the first time they touched it.  I disagree, I think they’d pop a couple, get bored, and never touch it again.  Here’s a picture of the package in case you’re interested.

Also, in case you’re looking for black, sequined hot pants, H&M is the place for you.  It’s ok.  You can buy them.  I don’t judge.

Now, the creepy bear.  Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory (which has very yummy chocolate covered apples that my husband never buys me because he doesn’t understand the appeal of chocolate covered fruit) had the creepiest bear out front.  It is this big stuffed bear. Well, here.  Look at it.

See, it’s creepy.  I made Thing 1 sit next to it for the picture (but I cropped her out).  Thing 2 wouldn’t even sit next to this thing.  It is way creepy.  Hell, I wouldn’t sit next to it.

Joel McHale, splicing together the Oprah-Sarah Palin interview with the Oprah-Jenna Jameson interview is brilliant.  I need to rewind it and watch again.  It took a second to figure out that it was a spliced interview.

Today was the tree lighting at a local shopping center.  There was a choir, a guy making balloon animals, a bunch of local dignitaries, and marines.  Marines in their dress blues.  They can really make a girl swoon.  Thing 1 was totally annoyed that I was checking them out.  Not half as annoyed as she was to find out that a guy from her high school hit on me (and sent me his phone number) via MySpace, but annoyed all the same.  It’s all good that I’m hip enough to steal my clothes, but when I ‘m youthful enough to attract the attention of guys her age then it’s not good at all.

Anyway, those are my thoughts on random things.  Hope you’re having as much fun as I am…… but I doubt it.

The latest headline about pornography jumped off the page in the style section of the Washington Post, Publicly a Whole New Lewdness — an article about watching porn in public. Now this was a compelling story in an otherwise boring news day.

The pornography industry today is a far cry from when people lined up around the block to watch Deep Throat in a movie theater and when my father was federally indicted for distributing that film in the 1970s. It has transformed over time; from VCRs bringing adult material into people’s homes to porn content made available in the palm of our hands. IPhones, laptops and Internet on planes makes it possible for everyone to have immediate access to porn.  So the same conversation about what is decent and appropriate happens again 30 years later. With all this new technology, didn’t we know this day would come? Even the people who publicly protest it have dabbled in the obscene.

Several states have passed legislation on what they are calling “drive-by porn”. Could the obscenity trials in the 1970s happen again? Community standard laws that give local communities the right to determine what is obscene is still on the books but enforced haphazardly. If you’re on a plane going from DC to Alabama, what locality determines what we watch at 27,000 feet? Could this issue fall under indecent exposure laws? Or should viewing porn in public be left to decorum? These are vexing questions.

It is unacceptable for a child to be subjected to this material. My father, who has been in the pornography business for 30 years never exposed me to adult material when I was a child. It was even hard to find it around the house. Trust me I looked. I would also be uncomfortable if the guy or girl next to me on a plane started up the latest Jenna Jameson DVD.  She’s a beautiful woman…just not my thing. I would watch something in the John Hughes genre.  Pretty in Pink and Sixteen Candles is more my speed.

The retail pornography business has declined from 12 billion dollar in the US in 2007 to 6 billion dollars in 2009.[1] But this doesn’t mean that the interest in pornography is decreasing just accessed differently. Based on the Experian Hitwise sample of 10 million U.S. Internet visitors porn is one of the most popular categories of online content.[2]

So as these questions danced around in my head. I needed an expert opinion…my dad. 

He said, “those people [who play porn in public] are indiscreet. It’s wrong, they shouldn’t do things like that.” 

I wasn’t surprise with his take on this.  He’s a reserved guy. But I was surprised at his following remarks.

“I would be a lot happier if they outlawed playing porn in public. It would help the retail business. If porn was less accessible my business would be better. Now that you can get free porn anywhere it is not as big of a deal to go into a store. When I was one of the few guys that sold pornography, business was good. I knew the Internet was the information superhighway but this is ridiculous.”

Could I be hearing this right? From the man that fought the early legal battles for the first amendment rights. I was a little taken a back and questioned his stance. It’s because of him and others that fought those battles that there is even ready access to pornography today.

As I reflected on our conversation, his reaction made more sense. My father understands, and so should everyone else, pornography is a business and he is an entrepreneur. He always viewed it in this way. When law enforcement authorities tried to shut down his business he did what he had to do to protect his livelihood.

So where ever the pornography industry might go next we can only speculate but one thing is certain it will be sure to make headlines.

Oprah and I usually get along fine.  But this week, she did a show on erotica and pornography.  Some women have sex with strangers, on camera, for money.  Some women buy kinky lingerie and sex toys.  The show gave the overview of everything NC-17 and passed judgment on none of it.  So I’m going to.

Buying a sex toy is not the same thing as buying porn.  Nobody gets hurt if you buy a sex toy or crazy lingerie (unless, I guess, if you’re into that).  Pornography, on the other hand, transforms girls into women with dead eyes.  Actresses who have played in sexy scenes, nude scenes, look slightly sheepish in their interviews.  Actresses who have had sex on camera look humiliated.  Their eyes look despondent.

Winfrey interviewed Jenna Jameson, who is, apparently, a big ol’ porn star.  And it’s perfectly healthy and she’s completely empowered, except that she cries when she talks about her infant sons finding 0ut about her past.

I won’t say that I think it’s right for her to be ashamed.  I don’t think there’s anything inherently shameful in what she did.  For whatever reason, many human beings feel like sex is something that should be private.  Whether this is natural or unnatural, right or wrong, I was sad that Jameson clearly feels shamed by what she has done.

I haven’t known women who worked in pornography.  I have known women who worked as strippers, and that was bad enough.  Preach all you want about women’s choices and how boobs are perfectly healthy and sexuality is perfectly normal.  I agree.  But that doesn’t matter.  I’ve seen that their eyes have the glaze that resembles the look of abuse victims: confusion, shyness, shame.

Maybe allowing the audience to decide their own boundaries was part of Winfrey’s intention.  I wish she had drawn a clearer line, or asked more pointed questions, at least, about how various sexually explicit activities and purchases affect women.  The last segment showed Lisa Ling interviewing an actress who talked about getting regular HIV tests, and having to trust that her costar hadn’t had sex with anyone since his negative test result.  Thankfully, it was hard for the show to wrap things up on a light note after that.

It seemed flippant to suggest, as Winfrey did, that you should ask your girlfriends if they watched porn, the same way you might ask them if they wear thong underwear.  The question of pornography at least deserves more serious consideration than that.  Is the fun or thrill or release of pornography worth the possible suffering of some people who produce it?

I don’t know.  I buy flowers every week at the grocery store: gerber daisies, roses, carnations, lilies.  I love having flowers in the house.  I have learned that a lot of our flowers are grown south of here, in countries where the workers are mistreated.  Tons of pesticides.  And still, I buy flowers.

We all support various evils with our money and our time.  Sometimes we know about it, and we do it anyway.  Maybe those crummy flower growing jobs are the only jobs those people can get.  Maybe it helps their kids go to school.  On the other hand, I stopped buying meat because I couldn’t stand the idea of all those animals being callously raised and killed.

In fact, Winfrey pushed the meat industry a few years back, and was the recipient of some pretty sharp retaliation.  I respected her stand.  And knowing that, I wish her recent show had been as brave.

Andrew Malcolm must be stupid or out of touch or both. He wrote a smear article about Sarah Palin whereby he mistook her for a porstar on Oprah, if only briefly. How funny! Those crazy newspaper bloggers. Palin was on Monday. Jenna Jameson was on Tuesday. Malcolm got them mixed up!? Crazy, I know. And he wrote a full blog article that was posted on one of nation’s biggest, and most failing, newspapers on getting confused. If only for a moment. It’s like a really bad sitcom. Fun!

I was at work today and unable to watch the show, but I’m picking up great coverage on twitter and the blogs – thank you, Oprah, for recognizing what women increasingly are bold to claim for ourselves: the full range of our sexuality, freedom to read and watch what turns us on, and dreams (or better) of sharing it with our partners. Here’s a quote from Chicago Examiner coverage of the segment: “Something’s going on in bedrooms across America,” Oprah says. “It has been reported that 1 in 3 consumers of online porn in our country are now women.”
