If I ever get the urge to see something new, refreshing and beautiful, I put on a wig and stare in the mirror. It helps. Or if I ever feel lost (“where did I put my Chanel?”), confused (“what did I do with my Chanel?”), or angry (“why do I not have enough Chanel?”), I go to the one thing that provides me with comfort, confidence and direction: my reflection.

That said, not everyone has the privilege of seeing me whenever they are in need of visual superiority, which is why a great place to check out this weekend is Lakeview’s Market Days. In addition to the many cuts of, umm… beef (they call it “Market” for a reason) and the huge variety of abs and pecs, revelers will also have the option of watching live music on the Belmont, Roscoe and Addison stages with performances by Jennifer Holliday (aka the original girl who’s telling you she’s not going), Think Floyd, Expose and Powder.
This weekend I’ll be attending the annual street fair in Chicago’s Boystown neighborhood, known as North Halsted Market Days. The incomparable Miss Jennifer Holliday will be performing and I’m so excited! So in honor of Jenny setting her feet down in Chicago for the weekend, I’m featuring her in today’s wake up. If this doesn’t get you off your chair, then you’re probably dead. By far this is the best performance of And I’m Telling You she’s ever done (in my opinion). Enjoy!

Jenny, I’ll see you this weekend girl!

Hahahaha. I know. My personal blog has become a self-confessional avid fan site of Charice Pempengco. I don’t care. I love her. See all my screencaps and all the clearest videos I got from YouTube of both of her performances on The Ellen DeGeneres Show .

After 48 years, someone has uploaded the whole video of Charice Pempengco’s performance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. Just scroll down a bit and watch the FULL video of our 14-year-old Charice on the Ellen Show. Plus bonus vids.

This is IT! CHARICE PEMPENGCO LIVE on the ELLEN DE GENERES SHOW!

[wp_youtube]Y8fR2jroUxE[/wp_youtube]

This is the full YouTube vid of Charice Pempengco’s short interview and both her renditions of “And I am Telling You I’m Not Going” by Jennifer Holliday and, of course Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You”. ENJOY

(After I can watching Charice, me tries to wipe off dirt from my eyez and forgotz I is wearing cheap plastic eyeglassez so I breaked it damn-me-stupid-nightjerkerz-tweeb)

Ever since I found her YouTube vid performing live at a Korean talent show, my eyes was just stuck on every video I can find on YouTube with her on the limelight. In an instant, after wow-ing all the Koreans on her belting prowess on SBS Star King, I instantly became a fan and featured her on one of my blog posts.

Finally, after 48 years of her trying to get an American VISA at the soonest time possible (which was so soon enough, I’m kinda shaking my head for the ultra fast processing, damn you lagay/palakasan system), here she is… jumping with so much enthusiasm on Ellen.

Charice Pempengco on her all-out effort to converse with Ellen.

Though she really exerted so much effort to look confident, I noticed that she’s really really nervous while Ellen asked her questions. I didn’t even understand what she first said to Ellen… nice person, nice buildings–everything looked nice and all. Lol. But of course it’s utmost acceptable. I would even lose my sanity when facing an international personality in front of the American audience (like stuttering on my impromptu news reporting on Eat Bulaga) and voice out the same thing (and forget everyone who helped me all throughout.) Anyway, Ellen was also star-struck to see Charice Pempengco in front of her, she’s like excited to hand Charice the mic for her to sing the Dream Girls anthem…

Everyone was anticipating. Including me on my very first time to watch this vid.

She belted a different version of Jennifer Holliday’s “And I am Telling You I’m not Going”. And oh, check out how the cameraman and the lights people struggled on her walking to and fro the stage (creating unnecessary shadows from the cameras). Even the clapper (in white) on the right side of the audience seats was caught off guard by the camera (hahaha).

And take a look at this:

Aaack! Is that kidz faw realz? OMG! Whoah!

You never failed to amaze me. I almost ran out of Mighty Bond to glue my jaw back to my skull every time you wave that Filipino flag in the international scene with all your mighty vocal prowess and all.

Again, Mabuhay ka Charice Pempengco! You made us all effin’ proud for giving Ellen “… one of the most incredible performances…” she has ever seen. I mean, standing ovation? C’mon! Charice deserves better than that!

And your mom? Awe… Just like me after winning a hundred thousand bucks from Eat Bulaga, she could have never been more prouder what with the standing ovation. Kudos, Charice!

OMG. Did I just see Ellen DeGeneres giving her a brand new iPOD???? An iPOD TOUCH WTF!!! WAAAAH! Grabe ka Charice! I SOO ENVY YOU!!!!!

Charice just lost her iPod during her flight to LA and…

“…WOW!!!” -Charice Pempengco while Ellen handed her the iPod

WOOOW talaga!!! Ba naman, an instant brand new iPod! iPod TOUCH, mind you!!

That really brought Charice into tears (and me) because of her getting a new iPod (while I’m not. Pfft.)

Damn you, Charice! Congratulations on your brand new iPod Touch and your bright bright bright bright career ahead of you!

(iyak ako sa sulok…)

UPDATE: For your information, Charice Pempengco performed two songs on Ellen. And here it is–a <strike>choppy, poor audio </strike>recorded spectacular performance of Charice Pempengco’s 1st and 2nd song on the Ellen DeGeneres Show with an astoundingly breathtaking and poignant rendition of “And I am Telling You I’m Not Going” and Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” live on American TV.

Another bird, a BIG one, told me she’s won’t. Perhaps not this week. She has to return to the Philippines and then fly back to Korea. Guess what she’s gonna sing, and I am telling you I’m not going anywhere just to find out what and why she’s gonna sing that. Oh come what may. Eh—did I just give you another clue?

This is a rare filmclip of the reunion of the original Dreamgirls, Sheryl Lee, Loretta Devine and Jennifer Holliday at the AIDS benefit Divas Simply Singing, which was held on on October 6th in Los Angeles. It is said to be only Miss Holliday’s second appearance in 17 years. The crowd welcomed Ms. Holliday (voice slightly diminished, but still a force to be reckoned with) like a war veteran in a military parade, and the Dreamgirls reunion was both vocally tight and emotionally moving. Her performance brought down the house with a standing ovation.

Jennifer Holliday landed her first big stage role on Broadway in 1979. When only seventeen years-old, Holliday landed a part the same day that she auditioned for the Broadway production of Your Arms Too Short To Box With God. Her performance in that musical earned her a 1981 Drama Desk nomination. Her next role was the role for which she is best known: The role of Effie Melody White in the Broadway musical Dreamgirls. Holliday joined the show in December 1981 and remained with the show for nearly four years. Her performance in the role was widely acclaimed, particularly in her iconic performance of the musical number that ends Act I, “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going”.

Among the acclaim was Holliday’s sweep of awards in 1982, including the Tony Award for Best Leading Actress in a Musical, a Grammy award for her recorded version of the song, and Drama Desk and Theater World awards for the performance.

Sometimes I just don’t know what to make of the celeb sense of entitlement. Given, I write for

Sometimes I just don’t know what to make of the celeb sense of entitlement. Given, I write for a celeb blog, so I generally take a scalpel to it, but overall afterwards I’m left with a surly look on my face over how jacked up our culture occasionally seems.

And now this nonsense.

Jennifer Holliday, the original Tony Award winning actress from the Broadway musical Dreamgirls feels slighted by the movie version.

Holliday said she was particularly heartbroken when friends told her that it is her version of “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going,” the show’s trademark song, that plays in one of the film’s trailers. In other words, her voice is being used to sell a production that had shut her out.

They own the rights to the song. And you won a Tony award when you were 21 years of age. Jennifer Hudson is 26. Maybe someone else deserves some critical acclaim. Would it have been smarter for them to use the Hudson version? Sure, it’s a great performance. But it’s their markerting department’s call. Maybe they wanted to appeal to the original audience too. Who knows? How is this a knock on you? If anything it’s a compliment. The article continues:

“Why is it necessary for them to wipe out my existence in order for them to have their success?” Holliday said. “It’s scary that they can be so cruel. I know it’s business, but why do they have to go to this extreme? I’m a human being. I need to work too. Why do I have to die to make them a winner?”

How is it cruel? And how the hell is she “dying?” What does she deserve, a cameo? It’s Paramount’s production and they wanted to start fresh. A movie is not a musical. Besides that, you’ve built a career out of your original Dreamgirls performance and when it wins the Oscar for best picture (which, having seen it, I can tell you it will) you’ll get even more attention for your original portrayal. You should be thanking your lucky stars that work you did 20 years ago is still relevant. Most artists would KILL to be you.

The article goes on to say that life is now imitating art because the story of Dreamgirls involves how harsh the music industry can be. As a footnote it mentions that Holliday was difficult to work with in the original stage play, has been uncooperative with Paramount, and has declined to see a screening of the movie.

Speaking from experience I can tell you Paramount would have used her if possible. They use everyone. I’ve damn near interviewed grips for big buzz movies. The fact that they’ve turned their backs on her means something. That “something” is that she wanted the new Dreamgirls to be all about her. Well it’s not.

It’s high time for a new star to shine, my girl Jennifer Hudson. She’s fantastic in this role and it’s a shame that petty jealousy doesn’t allow someone else to see that. Hudson will also win an Oscar here and I’d bet the house she pays homage to Holliday. That’s what people with class do.

I quite enjoyed X Factor last night. No sob stories, less really-bad-and-really-pointless singers, a

I quite enjoyed X Factor last night. No sob stories, less really-bad-and-really-pointless singers, and some nice voices. Saying that, it was still rather dull, and I’m counting the days until the auditions are over and Bootcamp finally starts. This just isn’t cutting it for me, to be honest.

One small thing to get off my chest: why is it that the producers insist on snubbing Miss Dannii Minogue? For weeks now they’ve been featuring the comments of Simon, Louis and Cheryl, whereas Dannii has been relegated to a simple ‘Yes’ or ‘No’. It was more blatant than ever last night. You could argue that the Xtra Factor makes up for this (Dannii generally gets much more airtime on that show), but really, who takes the Xtra Factor seriously? It’s fun and light (well, not so much last night, but more on that later), but it’s not like it means anything. Dannii typically has the most constructive comments, yet instead we’re seeing Louis make his usual comments about how generic-blonde-boy #9000 is a young whoever, Cheryl going about how some contestant ‘doesn’t know how good (s)he really is’, and Simon digging up one of his now unfunny metaphors from American Idol S2, unaware that he used it the same one a few months ago. Ugh. Just give them equal airtime, producers…that’s all I’m asking.

Re: The Xtra Factor…was I the only one who thought it was lacking it’s usual dorky charm last night? It never really picks up until the Live Shows anyway, but it’s still fun to watch if your bored. This one fell flat, I thought.

As for the contestants…

Lucie Jones (16-25 girl), from a tiny village just outside of Cardiff, certainly had charm. The voice? Well, when she said she was going to sing ‘I Will Always Love You’ by Whitney Houston (it’s by Dolly Parton, but w/e >_>), I was expecting the worse. I’ve got to say though, I was pleasantly surprised. She had a lovely, organic tone to her voice, to the point were she actually reminded me of S1’s Cassie Compton; a ’smaller’ voice than your typical Whitney/Mariah-wannabe, if you will, but no over-the-top quirkiness/stylistic choices to detract from her still-gorgeous voice. A little West End, but I for one like musical theatre, so that’s a plus. I was actually frightened that Lucie would attempt the dreaded key change and in turn destroy her entire performance, but she didn’t, so good for her. My favourite contestant so far.

Watch Lucie take on the prized gem of Dolly’s songbook:

Jade Fubara (16-25 girl) proved to be yet another stand-out; it’s looking like the Girls could be the category to watch yet again this year. ‘And I’m Telling You I’m Not Going’ has been done to death on TXF, AI, BGT, AGT etc, but she sang it well nonetheless. If there’s any criticism about her audition, it’s the fact that her performance didn’t *quite* match the song. AITYING is supposed to be overwrought, powerful and ‘Diva’-ish. You need to go all out, otherwise it’s not really worth your time going for it at all. When Jennifer Holliday sang it, you believed her: she really was telling you that she wasn’t going (I’ll post a link at the bottom of the entry). Jade sang it well, and perhaps it’s nice that she ‘made it her own’, but it was more a case of her timidly requesting that her lover stays, rather than telling him that she’s not going. Either way, she sang it well, and she could be one to watch.

Watch Jade requesting that she stay:

Lloyd Daniels (16-25 boy) had a nice enough voice that was very, very Welsh…he proved that with his a cappella performance. Still, he really, REALLY messed up his rendition of ‘I’m Yours’ (which I’m sick of, to be frank…I like Jason Mraz a lot, but there’s a limit…), and had he not been the perfect little Aryan boy, then Chezza wouldn’t have given him a second chance. I realize that having what the judges and general public view as the ‘total package’ can be an advantage, but we’ve seen with Leon and Shayne Ward that good looks =/= the X Factor. So yeah, I’m going into Bootcamp with a lot of bad feelings re: Lloyd. I’m sure he’s lovely, but I’m viewing him as a contestant on a show, not as a person. He was unfairly pimped (it’s not like he had great performing skills or even as good a voice as the likes of Danyl), and I’m against that.

Watch Lloyd’s somewhat lack-luster first audition:

Daniel Williams (16-25 boy) sang ‘Let It Be’ well, but came across as totally bland, and lacked the vulnerability amd heart that the song requires. Nice voice, but I doubt he’ll make the live shows. Remember when Brooke White sang ‘Let It Be’? Of course you do, because it was amazing. If you don’t, then YouTube it. In fact, I’ll post a video of that too! Not much left to say about Daniel…like I said, he has a very good voice technically, but I’m never going to root for him, so eh…

Watch his audition:

Aside from those four, there isn’t much worth mentioning. That French Mariah-fan (Fouad Djaoublia) was pretty delusional, and the crowd didn’t exactly help. Oh dear at his ‘…in you, and you, and you…‘ Mimi impersonation. Weird way to close the show. The former couple act, Combined Effort, was also all kinds of awkward, but kind of sweet too. Shame the guy’s a bit of a prat, but she seems lovely.

Dermot continues to improve, but he’ll most likely fall to pieces come the live shows. Holly was off, as was the entire Xtra Factor show. We’ve already discussed the judges.

I guess that’s it then. Check out the YouTube links.

Bye!

Jennifer Holliday singing ‘And I’m Telling You…’. The song itself starts at around 3.32:

Brooke White’s show-stopping cover of ‘Let It Be’:

There is one thing the dissenters can’t ever take away from Houston and that is her sheer talent. That’s it! The woman is darn talented! People throw aroud the word “diva” way too loosely these days. There are only a few who deserve this title and Houston is one of them.

I remember YEARS ago seeing her in concert with my mom and little brother in tow. The seats were nosebleed but it didn’t matter because I was spellbound — even back then — by what I heard fill the auditorium. She was absolutely amazing! That night she sang Jennifer Holliday’s mainstay “And I am Telling You” as one of the evening’s closers and I remember thinking where does one woman get all of that talent. Of course, being a diva-in-training herself Holliday followed up by saying that Houston wasn’t affected by love and loss, wasn’t bruised and battered enough to sing that song. Well, fast track to today, and I am not sure if Holliday would have the same sentiments. Whitney is a survivor! Gotta LOVE her!

I want to wish Whitney a very happy B-DAY. Gotta LOVE those LEOS; they lead the pack and never follow!

File under: I will always love you!

Why am I sweating like a slave? A fleeting moment of reflection hit me, as I stood there screaming a

Why am I sweating like a slave? A fleeting moment of reflection hit me, as I stood there screaming at the top of my lungs, hooting and hollering with my kids (football style) under each arm. Whatever! I was sweating, but having a blast!

What was I doing? Guest blogging (actually twittering) at the UniverSoul Circus in Brooklyn last night, at their show in Prospect Park. My friend Denene posted the opportunity on her blog, mybrownbaby.blogspot.com, weeks ago, and I jumped at the chance to blog backstage. Kristin Parker, with Elemental Interactive (creative corporate storytellers) reached out to me a few days ago and set it all up.

Anyway, last night, I packed the kids and wife into the Jeep, and we headed to Brooklyn, the second stop of USoul’s New York leg of the tour. We were treated (celebrity-like) to a behind-the-scenes look at USoul’s operations, and a pre-show meeting with the acrobats, jugglers, performers and contortionists we would later see onstage.

These kids toss each other around with their feet.

The performers, from all around the world, were a moving community, touring ten months out of the year. I was struck by the complexity of the circus culture. Despite the different languages they spoke, their various cultures and backgrounds, they worked as a cohesive unit, supporting one-another. I was also struck by the number of children in the circus. The death-defying stunts (I was later to see) were being performed by children as young as 12!

'Zanti' means 'show-offs' - I wonder why.

My kids were especially excited to see the horses, elephants and tigers backstage, and I couldn’t wait for them to actually see the show. Our tour of the tiger cages was cut short by some guy (read: me) who wanted to get a photo with his kids and a baby tiger nearly swiped his dreds! After a 30 minute meet-and-greet, we were led to our seats under the big-top.

The show started with a skit by Maggie Shirley Lillie Mae Francis Upshaw Jenkins and Nephew Lucky, the night’s hosts, who introduced James Brown and his Go-Go Dancers. They were followed by the Rough Riders, Shandong Foot Jugglers (troop juggles people), Ethopian Foot Juggler (girl juggles things) and the Wheel of Death. Each act was as electrifying as the last, and the energy of the night built to a dizzying crescendo.

After intermission, Maggie Jenkins and Nephew Lucky introduced the China Soul Flyers, the Caribbean Zanti Dancers, Stilt Walkers, Twisted Soul, Magic Cats and the Elephants. There were skits a-plenty and the DJ kept the house rocking all night.

While the whole night was awesome, the most exciting part of the night was for me unceremoniously un-circus-like. It was an old-school/new school battle, in which two couples went head-to-head, center ring, acting out the lyrics to old and new school songs.

The new school songs were ‘Kiss Me Through The Phone,’ by Soulja Boy and ‘Shoulda Let You Go,’ by Keyshia Cole. The old school songs were ‘Cause I Love You’ by Lenny Williams and ‘I’m Telling You’by Jennifer Holliday. Needless to say, old school rocked the house – literally. People (including your sweaty children-toting blogger) were up out of their seats screaming.

If you haven’t been to the UniverSoul Circus, I strongly urge you to go. Unlike Cirque Du Soleil, which is very refined, or Ringling Bros., which is your traditional circus-going experience, USoul is pure energy, start to finish (um…did I tell you I was sweating). But don’t take my word for it. See if for yourself.

Ah!! I leave in 26 days!

So, anyway, I think this song (Mahalia Jackson gettin’ it!) is super sweet. It was playing on my mom’s iPod tonight coming home from Jackson. She was rocking it out.

Besides being awesome musically, it makes me happy and refreshes my confidence for my coming adventures.

Lauryn Hill and Tanya Blount did the song and it was sweet (here). But, I couldn’t find a better version than Jennifer Holliday.

His Eye Is On The Sparrow

Why should I feel discouraged?
Why should the shadows come?
Why should my heart feel lonely?
And long for heaven and home

When Jesus is my portion
A constant friend is He
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches over me
His eye is on the sparrow
and I know He over watches me
His eye is on the sparrow
and I know He watches me

I sing because I’m happy
I sing because I’m free
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me (He watches me)
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches (I know He watches)
I know He watches me

(I) I sing because I’m happy
I sing because I’m free
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know He watches me (He watches me)
His eye is on the sparrow
And I know, He watches me
He watches me
He watches me
I know
He watches me.
