Seed of Chucky (also known as Child’s Play 5: Seed Of Chucky, Child’s Play 5 or SOC) is a 2004 American horror film, which is the fifth entry in the popular Child’s Play series. Seed of Chucky follows the events of Bride of Chucky and stars Jennifer Tilly (who plays herself and also voices Tiffany), Billy Boyd (as the voice of Glen/Glenda), and Brad Dourif (as Chucky). The film features rapper Redman, director John Waters and S Club star Hannah Spearritt. It was written and directed by Don Mancini, who created Child’s Play and has written all sequels to date. With this entry, Mancini marked his directorial debut.

The film, shot in Romania, continues the series’ evolution from the pure-horror genre of the first movie to a hybrid horror-comedy. Besides spoofing other horror movies, the film references domestic dramas and tabloid television. This film also counts as the first film in the series to contain nudity.

Trivia:

The script was originally offered to Universal in 1998, who turned it down. Focus Features (a division of Universal Studios) finally picked up the movie in 2003.

Filmed on the largest soundstage in Romania and the second-largest soundstange in Europe where Cold Mountain (2003) was also shot.

Because Focus Features has a reputation for yielding eloquent, “artsy” independent films, Rogue Pictures was created as an off-shoot to release this movie.

Jennifer Tilly wanted to lose weight to play herself in the movie, but she and Don Mancini inserted “fat jokes” into the script in case she didn’t make it.

The TV spots for this movie displays an unusual disclaimer: Britney Spears Does Not Appear In This Movie. This disclaimer was inserted into TV spots because Britney’s management was concerned that people might be lead to believe that Britney actually appears in the movie. It is not her in the movie; but a look-alike.

The wife of the man Tiffany calls to apologize to is the widow of the cop she killed at the beginning of Bride of Chucky (1998).

The gender confused child of Chucky and Tiffany is named either Glen or Glenda by his parents. Glen or Glenda (1953) was Edward D. Wood Jr.’s film in which Wood himself portrayed the transvestite known as Glen or Glenda.

When the floor manager at the beginning of the film shouts “Hey, Tiffany’s left arm is loose again” and then the arm grabs his crotch, this is an in-joke as revealed on the DVD commentary for Bride of Chucky (1998). Jennifer Tilly explains that Chucky’s left arm kept grabbing her breasts during shoots.

The First film to be made by Rogue Pictures.

As revealed on the DVD’s commentary the directors and producer had difficulty agreeing on the look of Glen. The director wanted to give him his own look and style but the producer felt that he should have features similar to Chucky because after all Glen is his son. As a result Glen was given blue eyes, red hair, and freckles like Chucky. Glen’s blue eyes and red hair however are a different shade than Chucky’s.

As revealed on the DVD commentary because of the low budget the crew were unable to shoot the much bigger Chucky vs Glen fight that was in the shooting script.

Chris Sarandon was approached to reprise his role as Det. Mike Norris from the first film, but turned it down due to scheduling conflicts.

Saint Ralph (2004)
★★★ / ★★★★

Written and directed by Michael McGowan, “Saint Ralph” stars Adam Butcher, a boy who believes that if he can perform a miracle by winning the 1954 Boston Marathon, God will take his mother (Shauna MacDonald) out from her coma and everything will be okay again. What I loved about this movie was that it started off pretty funny. Ralph was not exactly the model student: he got into trouble by “accidentally” masturbating in the swimming pool (did I mention he attends a Catholic school?), his peers constantly made fun of him, made forgeries with his best friend (Michael Kanev), and lied about his dead grandparents. But as things started to get serious, the director slowly showed the audiences how Ralph forced himself to be more mature and eventually run the marathon. I liked that he had occassional slip-ups because it showed that he was still a fourteen-year-old and not someone who turned into a saint overnight. I usually don’t like movies that glorify religion because most of them are too preachy. However, although this film was set in a religious school and community, it was really more of an inspirational story about someone who desperately needed an outlet for his negative emotions and channel it into something good. I was touched by his relationship with Father Hibbert (Campbell Scott), the teacher who helped him to get better at running, and was infuriated with Father Fitzpatrick’s (Gordon Pinsent) attempt to put Ralph in an orphanage. I also thought that Jennifer Tilly as Nurse Alice was pretty good; she became more like a mother figure to Ralph and I thought it was a nice that she was playing a different sort of character compared to her other movies. I have to admit that the end of the picture made me tear up in so many ways because I wanted Butcher’s character to succeed so badly. There’s just something about characters in movies who work really hard because they want to achieve something that gets me every single time. I guess I can easily relate because I used to feel like I always had to prove myself to people that I’m good enough. (Which reached its climax in my high school years.) After the movie, I was just overwhelmed with many different emotions and I was really happy that I saw it.

I never knew that the mafia was attracted to Broadway so much.

The story follows a hack 1920s playwright (John Cusack) who uses a mobster to finance his newest play. When the gangster’s bodyguard (Chazz Palminteri) starts rewriting the play to make it more believable, he shows more talent than Cusack. The complications of the play come within it’s stars who also include Diane Wiest, Jim Broadbent, and Jennifer Tilly.

This is directed by one of my favorites, Woody Allen, and I thought this film was a whole lot more funnier than any other of his films. The film doesn’t break any new ground or give us a new spin on the way we watch film, but it’s very enjoyable nonetheless.

Allen writes one of his best scripts ever, when in this film he does know that it takes time to create these characters until we find out their funny. I liked how a lot of these antics from these characters were all just so funny. Not the kind of chuckle funny, but really big laugh out loud funny, and found this as a very interesting take on a not so inspired plot.

The film is very funny but it’s also very sly. You can read it as a comedy, but you can also sense that in a subtle way, Woody Allen is making some comments on his own roles as an artist. Is he the Cusack character that is earnest but lacking in emotional strife? Or the gangster who follows art with a sure conclusion of what’s really going on? It’s very fun to actually figure it out for yourself, and keeps you thinking about the statement.

The only problem I had with this film is that it seemed to much of a parody. I felt like it was a Woody Allen parody film on a late-period film. The jokes, stage direction, some of the characters, and even the killings. Though they were funny I still felt the parody sense of the film that lied within.

The performances are one of the most vibrant I have seen in a long time from any film. Cusack does a good job, as usual, but it’s really the witty side characters that are really good. Chazz Paliminteri does one of his best jobs in this film, and is used in the beginning as a side character, then one after another, is used more and more and he creates this wonderful character that you love and hate at the same time. Wiest is amazing in this film and totally steals the show with every scene, also with Jennifer Tilly turning in a surprising Oscar nominee performance.

Consensus: Not very inspired, Bullets Over Broadway features some eccentric performances, a hilarious script and a great message, which ultimately climaxes in one of Woody Allen’s best films.

9/10=Full Priceee!!!

The Wachowski brothers’ films are one of those that you always expect to have fun and the give it you. Speed Racer, Matrix sequels or this Bound are that kind of films, the first Matrix is maybe the exception and the best film from this guys.

Bound try to be a different film without changing anything in the base. There is just a known story about the mob, but adding intelligent characters and specially Violet (Jennifer Tilly) the film becomes not just different but interesting.

The other element needed to complete this good film is the suspense, the tension is constant from the beginning, first with good interpretations and later with some good action scenes.

Bride of Chucky (also known as Child’s Play 4: Bride of Chucky, Child’s Play 4 or BOC)

Bride of Chucky (also known as Child’s Play 4: Bride of Chucky, Child’s Play 4 or BOC) is a 1998 American comedy horror film directed by Chinese director Ronny Yu, who also directed Freddy vs. Jason and The 51st State. It is the fourth entry in the Child’s Play series. The film stars Jennifer Tilly (who plays and voices the titular character the Bride of Chucky or Tiffany) and Brad Dourif (who voices Chucky). This movie co-stars John Ritter, Katherine Heigl and Nick Stabile. The music score is by Graeme Revell (who previously did the music for Child’s Play 2).

Child's Play 4: Bride of Chucky (1998)

Bride of Chucky marks the point where the series takes a more humorous turn, often into self-referential parody. Thus the change from the Child’s Play in the title. Contrary to the previous three films, the violence in Bride of Chucky is punctuated by humor to deflate the macabre visuals. The film follows the events of the previous films continuity-wise, but not tonally or in a continuation of those film’s overall plot (where Chucky pursued the character Andy Barclay). This film also marks Chucky’s new permanent look, a more frightening appearance in which he was covered in scars.

Trivia:

In the opening shot, when the policeman is walking through the evidence locker room, several dolls appear. These resemble, or may actually be, from the movie series Puppet Master. They appear in the first storage case shown, on the left side of the screen.

Also in the evidence room in the beginning of the movie, there is “The Crate” from the movie “Creepshow”

The film’s promotional poster is a parody of the Scream 2 promo poster.

In the film’s opening scene, Michael Myers’ mask (from the Halloween films), Jason Voorhees’s mask (from the Friday the 13th films), Leatherface’s chainsaw (from the The Texas Chainsaw Massacre films), and Freddy Krueger’s glove (from the Nightmare on Elm Street films) are visible in the evidence locker.

Buy This Title on DVD

Andy Barclay is not mentioned, nor does he appear, in this film, except in the opening credits where a newspaper headline reads: Boy Claims Doll Possessed By Killer’s Soul. In a deleted scene, Chucky argues with Tiffany about getting his revenge on him for causing him trouble in the past.

In the scene before Tiffany is electrocuted and she was watching the 1935 movie Bride of Frankenstein (the movie that inspired Bride of Chucky), when Frankenstein says, “We belong dead.” In the scene at the cemetery, after Tiffany stabs Chucky in the back and he asks “Why?” and Tiffany says the exact same line, paying homage to the earlier film.

Chucky’s death scene at the end (when he was shot to death by Jade) was a 10-year anniversary homage to Chucky’s death at the end of Child’s Play.

The date on Tiffany’s newspaper clippings at the beginning of the movie and the date of death on Charles Lee Ray’s tombstone is 9 November 1988, the release date of the first Child’s Play movie.

There is a character in the film named Damien Baylock. In The Omen, the satanic child is named Damien, while his evil nanny is named Mrs. Baylock.

When John Ritter’s character is seemingly killed, his face looks much like Pinhead from Hellraiser. Chucky exclaims, “Why does that look so familiar?” Andrew Robinson, who played Sgt. Botnick in Child’s Play 3, played Larry Cotton in Hellraiser.

According to the DVD’s director commentary, Chucky was originally supposed to say to Chief Warren (John Ritter), “Sorry, Jack, but three’s a crowd,” after killing him – referring to Ritter’s starring role in the hit television sitcom Three’s Company. (At the last minute, the director deleted the line from the script because he found it too corny. The joke may have also referred to the series’ short-lived spinoff, Three’s a Crowd).

When Jesse (Nick Stabile) asks Chucky and Tiffany how they became dolls, Tiffany replies “it is a long story,”. and Chucky says “Let me put it this way,if this were a movie it would take 3 to 4 sequels to do it justice,”. (A humorous reference to the length of the “Child’s Play” series).

Police Officer Robert Bailey, who is killed in the opening sequence of Bride of Chucky, is referenced in the sequel Seed of Chucky. Tiffany is trying to end her killing fetish and decides to atone for her killings. She phones Bailey’s widow to apologize for slitting her husband’s throat, causing the woman to sob and Tiffany to feel a sense of closure.

When Chucky decides to kill Chief Kincaid, he first picks up a ball-peen hammer, only to put it down when Tiffany remarks, “Predictable.” In the original Child’s Play, Chucky kills his first victim by hitting her in the head with a ball-peen hammer and sending her flying out a window.

Tiffany asks Chucky if he was born with a knife superglued to hand. This is a reference to the second film when Chucky loses his hand in the climax and replaced it with a knife.

Barbara and I seemed to be so right for each other, as far as ambition and business and identity and power. But it really takes work.
When those who know what the hell we’re talking about look back and ponder the early stages of alternative/modern rock, there’s one band that should definitely come to mind – Camper Van Beethoven. David Lowery and friends formed one of those bands long considered well before its time. I remember sitting in my buddy Tim’s room for countless hours in high school while we dissected each and every song off of Our Beloved Revolutionary Sweetheart. I’m not sure if he and I ever came close to agreeing which one was actually the best but, having listened to that album about 834 times straight through, I’m going with “My Path Belated.” Unlike some of those other bands from that era, Camper Van Beethoven actually re-formed, recorded a new album and, to this day, continue to tour.

“I had this image of you inside me.”

For those that loved:

Gilda, The Last Seduction, Prey for Rock and Roll, Sin City,

For those that are writing on:

Representation of femininity/sexuality, positions of spectatorship, film noir, neo-noir, femme fatale, images of women in the cinema, masculinity in crisis, crime cinema, violence in the cinema, symbols of femininity, lesbian identity, queer cinema

In a nutshell
Before they brought The Matrix to the masses (and then undid their good work with ‘those’ sequels), the Wachowski’s produced this slick neo-noir crime caper. Corky and Violet show Thelma and Louise how rebelling against the constraints of an oppressive patriarchal rule really works. Knowingly vampy Tilly and charismatic Gershon also have twice as much fun and provide twice as much entertainment while they do it.

Plot

Sick of being trapped in an oppressive relationship with made man Ceaser (Joe Pantaliano), deceptively plucky mob moll Violet (Jennifer Tilly) hatches an escape plan with ex-con Corky (Gina Gershon). A daring scheme, involving the theft of 2 million dollars of mob money, inevitably things don’t quite go to plan.

Why should I watch?

Although much is made of the lesbian relationship between Corky and Violet, there is far more to Bound than two pretty neo-fatales kissing. While Bound achieves a genuine eroticism (no doubt aided by the enlisting of a ’sex therapist’ to choreograph sex scenes between the leading ladies, and the sexually-charged chemistry between Gershon and Tilly), it is also a visually enticing and well crafted entry into the world of neo-noir.

While the male supports deliver capable caricatures of mob masculinity, it is Gershon and Tilly who shine here, both existing in the kind of grey space that makes characters worth watching. Both are somehow resourceful and resilient, yet fractured and vulnerable. The journey each characters undertakes throughout Bound serves to make the film’s conclusion both satisfying and believable.

Consider/Further study etc

Within film noir, the femme fatale is often shown to rely on her sexual prowess and manipulation of the men around her to achieve her goals. Do Corky and Violet reinforce or challenge this claim?

Do Corky and Violet reinforce or challenge the classical femme fatale archetype? Do they reinforce or challenge traditional understanding’s of femininity?

Considering the patriarchal structure of the Mafia, Corky and Violet’s transgression against Ceaser and his associates could be seen as a challenge to an oppressive patriarchal social order. In what other ways do Corky and Violet challenge traditional patriarchal expectations?

Does Bound reflect a continuation of or break from traditional film noir?

How does Ceaser (and the other Mafia men) initially view Violet? How does this differ to the way Corky sees Violet, or the way that Violet sees herself? Consider in particular the difference between Violet at the beginning of the film, to the way she appears at end.

Within Bound the hand is eroticised as a sexual organ. In a sense, sexual potency is reassigned from (implicitly masculine) phallic symbols to the hand. How does this affect the representation of both feminine and masculine sexuality within Bound?

Essential viewing for Jennifer Tilly:

1. Bound — The Illmatic of lesbian hiest flicks. Still the best directing by The Wachowski Brothers (The Matrix triology)

2. Bride of Chucky – The Ready to Die of horror flick cleavage.

3. The Getaway – It’s 1994. Kim Basinger is still hot. She’s starring in a movie with her then-husband Alec Baldwin, who was an uber-star. Michael Madsen, newly christened cult figured badass via Reservoir Dogs, is the main antagonist. And the sexiest, sultriest, most eye-catching performance was from Jennifer Tilly as Fran Carvey, meek spouse of a nerdy vetrenarian.

Relax… It’s Just Sex
★★★ / ★★★★

This movie, written and directed by P.J. Castellaneta, about people with all sorts of sexual orientations is far from perfect but I couldn’t help but enjoy it. I thought it was nice to see people just being people without having to be afraid of offending its audiences. The cast is led by Jennifer Tilly whose friends mostly consists of gays and lesbians. Tilly juggles three fronts: her need to constantly have sex because she wants to have a baby before her eggs “expire” (done in hilarious ways, I might add), trying to be supportive of lesbian friend (Cynda Williams) who recently broke up with her almost decade long lover (Serena Scott Thomas) because she fell for another man, and consoling her gay friend (Mitchell Anderson) because he’s depressed that he’s not (or been in) any stable relationship. Although there were very funny moments, especially in the first half, my favorite scene has got to be the dinner conversation on whether HIV really causes AIDS. That scene constantly evolved not just topic-wise but because it showed us the many personalities of each of the characters and how they dealt with the situation whenever they were confronted by others. It felt so real; I have many memories with friends who have varying opinions when we talk about certain issues and some of those times do get to the point where somebody has to yell, “Shut up!” before the discussion got out of hand. That scene made me feel like I was sitting at that dinner table so I thought it was very powerful. I think the title of this picture is very misleading because sex is not the central issue. It’s really more about relationships and how such relationships are defined by people who are directly involved with a particular issue and those who are in the periphery. The only thing I didn’t like about this movie was it’s all too gloomy second half. I was very impressed that it was a comedy and offered a plethora of insights but it became more typical with the serious dramatics in the second half. This is a small movie but the writing is very funny because it features a lot of colorful straight/gay/lesbian/bisexual people. For me, it wasn’t at all difficult to connect with it.

Directed & Written By: Brain Hecker
Cinematography: Hallvard Braein
Editor: Annette Davey & Danny Rafic

CAST: Steven J. Kaplan, Alia Shawkat, Ashley Benson, Willaim H. Macy, Cheryl Hines, Dinah Manoff, Jennifer Tilly, Jon Polito, Kate Miccuci

One of the unique gifts of this quirky coming of age comedy is that the humor and mood of this film is very low key. The film isn’t busy with toilet humor and sight gags or pratfalls. None of the scenes are over the top or sensationalized, Which maybe why it had a limited theatrical release. It was just a little to subtle and realistic for mass consumption.

Sure the film and scenes are funny but in a realistic way in which you can relate too. It also helps that the cast is made of realistic looking actors. Not unbelievable model looking cast members that instantly take you out of the film. You get to know the characters and like them.

Willaim H. Macy’s hair alone makes this worth watching. Willaim H. Macy and Cheryl Hines really stand out in this film even though they are only supporting characters.

My only problem is the film is too short yet is long enough to tell it’s story and make it’s mark.

It’s a simple story no over the top montages.

Okay, another top 100 list here and this time it’s movies. As usual, this is a list of my favourites which may have some random choices in it but it’s boring having every list out there the same. So without dragging this longer than it needs to, here is the top 100 films below.

WARNED: potential spoilers will appear if you haven’t seen ANY of these films.

100. ZOOLANDER

Zoolander, Hansel & David Bowie

DIRECTOR: Ben Stiller

STARRING: Ben Stiller, Owen Wilson, Will Ferrell, Christine Taylor, Milla Jovovich, Jerry Stiller & Jon Voight

FAVE QUOTE: “How can we be expected to teach children to learn how to read if they can’t even fit inside the building?” – Derek Zoolander

BEST MOMENT: Two words – gasoline fight!

Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) is VH1’s three time male model of the year, but when Hansel (Owen Wilson) wins the award instead. Zoolander’s world turns upside down as his male model friends die in a freakish gasoline fight accident, he decides to retire and goes back to live with his father (Jon Voight), whose dissapointed in him & what he has become. Evil fashion guru Mugato (Will Ferrell) hires Zoolander, he thinks his life has turned back round again, that is until he finds out that Mugato has actually brainwashed him to kill the Prime Minister of Malaysia, he needs help from Matilda (Christine Taylor) and his rival Hansel to stop it from happening. The film was released back in 2001 and to be honest, this is a film that Ben Stiller hasn’t better acted in (though there is another film which he directed that is higher on this list). Stiller & Wilson really work well together and Ferrell is really good aswell as the evil fashion guru Mugato. Look out for random guest appearances (David Duchovny, David Bowie & Billy Zane!??). Should check it out and of course at the end, Zoolander does realise that there is more to life than being really, really, ridiculously good looking.
