Assim, realmente fica difícil a chamada criatividade.

.

Apesar de Prince estar com visual parecido como do game Prince of Persia Warrior Within, nota-se a importância que tiveram com a caracterização do personagem.

Trailer do Filme (Legendado)

E aí , alguém mais leva fé no filme do Prince ?

Para relembrar: Trailer do game Prince of Persia de Sands of Time

In preparation for — nay, in honor of — the upcoming premier of Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call in New Orleans, directed by Werner Herzog and starring the great performer Nicolas Cage, the Acme Video blog will be running a series of (at least) daily pieces on the entire Cage Oeuvre, with its startling highs and mystifying lows. It is one man’s tale… a chronicle of madness and obsession.

(So, there’s not gonna be any order to this thing. My only goal is to see them all. And to try and space out the good ones, so that I don’t have to watch, like, six Cage/Bruckheimer movies in a row. Any and all are encouraged to chime in in the comment section with thoughts, recommendations, dissenting opinions, etc. Today you get two stinkers for the price of one. Ever onward…)

DAY 2: MATCHSTICK MEN + BANGKOK DANGEROUS

I’ll ignore, for now, the question of what in God’s name has happened to Ridley Scott. But what a stiff, joyless film this is. Seriously, everybody was on autopilot for this one. None worse than Cage, who looks in this film like someone completely devoid of the joie de vivre that defines his best performances. Playing an obsessive-compulsive con-man, Cage’s character is nothing more than a collection of tics, twitches, and stutters; he over-acts his character’s quirks rather than give us anything of substance. There isn’t a single moment where he seems to be having any fun at all, which is the least he could’ve brought to a slick caper-film of this kind. Utterly forgettable.

Exhibit B is blockbuster Cage. Or at least, attempted blockbuster — this baby flopped at the box office (supposedly Cage’s own production company, Saturn Films, fronted most of the cost). There is very nearly no reason at all to see this film, though it is necessary viewing, for my purposes. He’s an assassin in Bangkok, lives only for himself, loves no one, will kill anyone and everyone who gets in his way, yadda yadda yadda. But dig his deaf-mute girlfriend, whom he primarily communicates with via pained facial expressions. This is Cage’s bread and butter — he’s a clown without makeup. None of these scenes were intended for comic relief, but… you take what you can get.

As we work our way through Cage-Fest together, I want you all to keep an eye out for some recurrent symbols in Cage’s work. There are a couple in particular that I’m interested in, but I’m still formulating my theories and I can’t say much as yet. But I’ll give you all a couple clues.

Clue #1: Cage’s hair. Be especially mindful of the style, and the direction in which it’s combed.

Clue #2: There are two Cages.

See you tomorrow.

The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time trailer was just released and I have a big question about it

The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time trailer was just released and I have a big question about it.

The film is based on a popular video game that I’ve never played, but I hear it’s pretty fun. The film is made by Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer who are hoping to make a new franchise for the Pirates of the Caribbean audience (I can see the new rides at Disney World now!). It stars Jake Gyllenhaal (Is that really how you spell that? That’s awful!) as well as Gemma Arterton (?), Alfred Molina and Ben Kingsley. It looks like it will be a rip-roaring good time for all, Pirates style.

But here is my question: If Jake is playing a Persian Prince, shouldn’t he be Persian? Or at least look kind of Persian? I’ve known quite a few people from Persia (and yes, they call it Persia, not Iran) and they looked nothing like Jake. As a matter of fact, shouldn’t the other actors playing the other Princes and Maharajahs and Viziers and such also look Persian? Ben Kingsley can pass, I suppose, but Mr. Gyllenhaal looks about as white as it gets to me. I understand wanting to have a name in the lead, but couldn’t they get a lead who at least has a tan? It’s really a shame because the Persian people are quite beautiful.

Am I wrong about this? I kind of feel like I’m on crazy pills when I watch the trailer.

(I’m very proud of myself for figuring out how to embed video into the blog. I’ll be doing this more now that I know how.)

I’ve been extremely nervous about the new Prince of Persia movie since it was announced. As yo

I’ve been extremely nervous about the new Prince of Persia movie since it was announced. As you know, there really hasn’t been a good video game movie so far, at least a live-action one(Yes, I’m looking at you, Advent Children and Pokemon). Among the best on Wikipedia’s list of films based on video games appear to be Tomb Raider, Max Payne, and Mortal Kombat, and that’s not saying much. Among the worse ones, if I can actually narrow it down, are Silent Hill, Doom, and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li. So naturally, I’m nervous about Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time

Jerry Bruckheimer. I have nothing against him, he took a ride and made it a successful IP, one that I even enjoy. I do not however feel, that he was a good choice for PoP, The game, while it’s only T(unless you count WW with its M rating) it still too intense for a family oriented Disney movie. If you haven’t played the games then shame on you, you’re 6 years late, and I’m going into details now: In the first hour of SoT everyone but you, Farah, and the Vizier turn to sandmonsters, meaning you must kill many of your comrades, including an emotional battle with your father, in his now zombified state.

That’s a bit intense for your family of 4 going to see this on a Sunday afternoon, don’t you think? I also have doubts about the cast, Jake Gyllenhaal specifically. He’s a bit ethnically challenged for the role. It feels like they might as well have cast Nolan North and gotten it over with, so I could have referred to the whole thing as a mistake, like Spawn the movie. Names, too, Prince has never had a name, they even kept true to that in PoP: 2008, as mediocre as it was they at least got that right. Not only to they give Prince a name they change everyone elses.

That being said, I do see some good in this: Since Jerry Bruckheimer is working on this, there’s basically an unlimited budget, which is extremely noticeable in the trailer, specifically with the slow-down scenes. The firs time I saw the trailer, I thought it was the dark prince emerging, but it’s really just a new take on the time manipulation scenes. The scenery is perfect, Gemma seems a good fit for the Farah-esque character. Jake seems to have the iconic corny comebacks down pretty well, too.

There are two thing in particular I would love to see in this movie: One being the intro/ending. Remember the intro I was talking about? Well it starts off like this: You see the Persian army headed towards the palace, the Prince’s voice chimes in “Most people think that time is like a river, that flows swift and sure in one direction, but I have seen the face of time, and I can tell you, they are wrong. Time is an ocean in a storm. You may wonder who I am, and why I say this. Sit down, and I will tell you a tale like none you have ever heard” (forgive me if thats a bit off, I’m going from memory). Towards the ending of the game is him sitting with Farah, He tells her of the Vizier and how he plan to betray her country. She wonders how he knows this, so he begins “Most people think that time…” The other scene I want in the movie is the end scene, after he defeats the Vizier, Farah walks in and sees the Vizier really was a traitor. Prince, knowing what all has happened is still in love with Farah, but to her, none of it happened. He leans in and kisses her, and she shoves him away, scorning him. He uses the dagger to go back in time a few seconds before he kissed her. At the end of the scene he is running off, and she asks him for his name, he replies that she can call him “Kakolookiyam.” That was the name of a the hero from stories that Farah’s mother told her when she was little, she had shared this with Prince before he reversed the opening of the hourglass. Those two scenes would just about make the movie for me, I doubt I’ll see either, but I can still hope.

What has really started to sell me on this though is the IGN Rewind of the trailer, where Jordan Mechner actually talks about the movie, scene by scene. His reasoning behind certain questions we all have makes sense, even if it isn’t what we want to hear. He talks about the incorporation of the name, Dastan. It’s Persian for trickster, and it just seems to fit. He explains that in the video game he was nameless you you can further associate yourself with the Prince, but he introduced a name for the movie because when you’re watching it, if Gemma just refers to him as you all the time, it’s going to throw most people off, and even though I’m not “most people”, I not only agree with this, I prefer it. He also talks about the rest of the cast changing, along with the story, He explains that SoT worked very well the way it was, it made for a great third person action adventure platformer, but that doesn’t make the best movie, which is one big reason that most movie-based games suck, they try to follow the story too well, leaving you with a stiff representation of the movie and no new elements to the story. Unfortunately, it works both ways, so trying to copy the game to a T would be dry and washed out. Imagine watching someone playing a game, I for one usually find it entertaining, I can be lazy and experience the game firsthand, along with being able to backseat-game. Now imagine that you’re watching a recoding of someone playing the game, seeing the game played in third person, where it feels like you can manipulate the character, but there’s nothing you can do but watch. That’s not really what I want to go see, no matter how visually impressive it seems to how well written the story is.

On a side note, there is a prequel coming out in April, it’s a graphic novel, and while he didn’t work on any of the interior as far as I’m aware of, Todd McFarlane did the cover to it. I’m genuinely excited for that and that will not change. One funny thing i have noticed about it though is McFarlane left Marvel to create Image, now he’s doing a bit of work for Disney with this GN, who now owns Marvel, just seems a bit humorous to me that he’s doing work for his former employer if you look at it the right way.

Overall, I am hopeful of this movie, even if it doesn’t follow the original story in SoT. There also seems to be elements from the other games as well, such as the temple and the dagger-tail.

And one more thing: Mechner said that Ubisoft was working on something for the movie, hopefully it isn’t a game based on a movie based on a game. I’m personally hoping they’re taking cue from Sony and doing the same thing with the SoT trilogy as Sony has done with God of War and rerelease the games in high def. How great would that be?

Reality Rather than ruminate on how long it’s been since I last posted on this forum (17 days

Reality

Rather than ruminate on how long it’s been since I last posted on this forum (17 days – I’ve been spending my “writing block” on translation projects, my dissertation and a filmography for a book), I will elaborate on a few of the major events that have marked the last two weeks.

Our film AOP, a mockumentary about a secret West German fetish, debuted at the HFF “Konrad Wolf” as part of the end of orientation festivities on Friday October 23rd. It went over lukewarm compared with the other “Knaller” made by the other nine groups (at least 3 of which took place in a bathroom), but director Maurice M. Mohn swore to me that the film “wasn’t unsuccessful” at the party afterwards. Speaking of THAT party: it was held after 11:00 p.m. at a sketchy, illegal club in Kreuzkölln with no fire exits, no windows, a sketchy fridge full of bottled beer and nothing but techno beats (the latter being a plus against the other factors). I sort of plowed my way through the packed bathroom line to reach the exit around 2:30 after quaffing a few cheap beers and yelling my way through several conversations in the smoky darkness. An experience, to be sure.

I went to a wonderful Fulbright brunch on Sunday October 25th held by the generous Luisa Greenfield and Ming Tsao in Kreuzberg, where I met Jacob Comenetz, a former Fulbrighter now working at the Bundespresseagentur (more on him to come) and got a pile of great book recommendations from Ming about writing about the electronic music aesthetic (you want that list? Send a comment my way!). Later that day, I picked up Kat at the Berlin Tegel airport, who successfully got her very heavy baggage out of the terminal without a cart (or my help, since that’s how European airports work) and we ate out at Tuk-Tuk, the Indonesian restaurant down the street from us.

Having Kat around has been great for many reasons. Here are a few:

* Cessation of married-man-long-distance loneliness;

* More satisfying sleep;

* The apartment is now warmer;

* Increased intake of generally nutritious food that tastes good;

* New impulse to plan social events and outings, and I can show her all the old stuff I’ve gotten to know;

* Celebrating birthdays and holidays is much more meaningful again!

In the first week (Oct. 26 – Nov. 1st), I purposefully overscheduled us with many social events, including coffee with Kira and Beverly and dinner with the same, carving pumpkins with Katie Weeks and Hilary Bown, Luisa’s film screening on Friday night, and a Fulbright alumni Halloween party at Joe’s Bar in Prenzlauer Berg on Saturday night with Jacob. I did so to make Kat feel at home and connected here, which also conversely made me feel more at home and connected here as well. Speaking of Luisa’s screening, we had a great turn-out for the two shorter, more experimental films (Light and Bridegroom… see below) but, since we started over an hour late, over half the audience missed the wonderful mess that was John Ford’s Seven Women (1966). We hope that everybody returns for our continuing Ford/Straub pairings, as well as other assorted film gems we manage to procure. As for the Halloween party, Kat and I went as a vampire-zombie duo who hated each other through our expressions on our T-shirts: “Vampires Bite” and “Zombies Need Brains.” Ha ha.

This last week has presented us with opportunities to walk around and shop (such as in Kreuzberg’s famous Bergmannstrasse), watch movies together (many reviewed below) and get our visas (by waking up at 3 a.m. and surmounting the evil LABO). All in all a good time, and I anticipate more to come.

Professionally speaking, I’ve had some ups and downs the last two weeks. Ups: I spent four hours with Herr Dieter Kosslick, director of the Berlinale, and two hours with Dr. Gottfried Langenstein, director of ARTE; I’ve found hundreds of newspaper articles with revealing insights on the reception of the Indianerfilme in East Germany; I’ve met up with Reinhild Steingröver of the University of Rochester and established contact with several other scholars working on parallel topics to my dissertation. Downs: I lost my first month’s worth of book/film notes due to a faulty data back-up attempt, so I’ve got another 10 hours of work to do in reconstructing it. This is the way it goes.

And one final note: if you’re ever on Akazienstrasse in Schöneberg, DO NOT eat at the South Indian restaurant called Chennai Dosai, not only because their food is not particularly good, but because they played the opening track from the Hrithik Roshan sci-fi Bollywood film Koi Mil Gya (2003) on a loop THE ENTIRE TIME WE SAT THERE. It was a unique form of tourist torture, though I’m sure they weren’t expecting a customer who knew the film.

Fantasy

Posse (dir. Mario van Peebles, USA 1993)

Woody Strode, Big Daddy Kane, and many other prominent African-Americans star in this somewhat violent, misogynist and cliché Western. Its primary contradiction lies in its seeming original mission – to re-insert African-Americans into a Western film tradition absolutely dominated by actors coded as “white” - and its aesthetic outcome – a cheap Leone treasure/revenge plot with a lot of melodramatic cheese and macho strutting from Van Peebles. The fact that I couldn’t really read the blocky explanatory text at the end didn’t really detract from the palpably saccharine coating that Van Peebles put on this piece of macho-masculine self-glorification.

The Treasure of Silver Lake (dir. Harald Reinl, FRG/France/Yugoslavia 1963)

The film that started the whole Euro-Western trend, and a completely necessary entry in the cinema books next to adventure films such as Errol Flynn’s Captain Blood (1935)or Lucas’ and Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981). The superhuman duo of Winnetou (Pierre Brice) and Old Shatterhand (Lex Barker) stumble upon an injustice committed (the murder of Götz George’s German immigrant father) and a treasure to discover. Let’s just say that, on a superficial level, the film absolutely delivers: colorful landscapes, bold action sequences, and plot twists that still convince the 8 year-old inside of you. You only think about the crazy exoticism of the whole charade afterwards…

The Sons of Great Bear (dir. Josef Mach, GDR 1966)

The East German response to Reinl and Wendlandt’s Winnetou films, The Sons of Great Bear is the most “historically accurate” of all the DEFA Indianerfilme and also one of the most visually compelling. That being said, Mach had little idea how to direct an action sequence, so the ending fight scene is confusing and frustrating to say the least, not to mention more-or-less tacked on to Liselotte Welskopf-Henrich’s original source material. The press reviews made sure to note how much actor Gojko Mitic’s physique looked like the “real-life” Shoshone, though their basis on which to judge that comes from other Westerns’ portrayal of Native Americans. Hmmm….

Little Big Man (dir. Arthur Penn, USA 1970)

Thomas Berger’s picaresque about the only white survivor of Little Bighorn, a man brought up by the Cheyenne (a.k.a. the human beings) named Jack, is expertly executed by Penn, if awkwardly assembled as a whole. General Custer’s portrayal in the film is nothing short of brilliant – an arrogant prick more than a proper villain – and the Cheyenne are given a lot of positive screen-time. Of course, Dustin Hoffman’s Jack dominates the majority of the film, with mixed results.

Battleship Potemkin (dir. Sergei Eisenstein, Russia 1925)

Restored 35mm print containing all the original scenes? Check.
Live accompaniment by an adept pianist? Check.
Kat’s first time seeing a leftist modernist classic? Check.
I really can’t say anything more, other than that the Kino Arsenal has a special place in my heart.

Trick ‘r Treat (dir. Michael Dougherty, USA 2008)

A kind of Four Rooms treatment of Halloween, Trick ‘r Treat is a very smooth movie with regard to horror clichés, playing on one’s expectations, and the usual twists and turns one expects of even the slasher genre nowadays. One should watch this with one’s tongue firmly in cheek, even through all the horrifying bits. I say no more.

The Omen (dir. Richard Donner, UK/USA 1976)

Um… Gregory Peck’s character is kind of dumb? This is at least what the film suggests, after one is led through a constant barrage of corroborating evidence that demonstrates his son is the antichrist, and he still doesn’t seem to get it. Oh well: there are many other films with evil children that work with the formula that The Omen put forth, so I suppose it’s influential.

League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (dir. Stephen Norrington, USA 2003)

This was the second time I’ve seen the film, and the second time I’ve seen it in Berlin (the last time was with Mary Brandel in 2003 – and I hated it then too.) Alan Moore’s excellent graphic novel was to be transformed into a grand piece of pulp, and instead turned into a nightmarish gobbledy-gook of lame special FX (including the atrocious Venice sequence), too many characters running around (including “Tom Sawyer,” their worst revision), and sequel-baiting (the *ahem* “ending”). Stuart Townsend is about the only redeeming feature of this feature, and that’s because he’s so damn charming in any case.

V for Vendetta (dir. James McTeigue, UK/Germany 2006)

Another slightly second-rate “good” film from the Wachowski Brothers, V for Vendetta continuously bills itself as a smart action thriller which raises bits of moral ambiguity for the postmodern cinema-goer, but is ultimately far too utopian about the power of the masses to stomach. Alan Moore wasn’t nearly as idealistic as this, and far more critical of the respective places within society that Evie, V and the masses inhabit. You can tell through the exquisite detail of the sets that the Babelsberg people worked on this one, though.

Genau Gleich (dir. Burkhart Wunderlich, Germany 2009)

A film that I’m currently subtitling for Burkhart about an incestuous relationship between German-Polish twins and an old woman on a bench waiting for Elvis. An absolutely brilliant concluding shot is likely to give this one high marks at the Berlinale if, indeed, we manage to get the film into competition.

Light (dir. Marie Menken, USA 1964)

Dizzying Christmas lights, spinning motion, elliptical editing. The lost American avant-garde. Shall we see it again?

The Bridegroom, the Comedienne and the Pimp (dir. Jean-Marie Straub, Daniele Huillet, FRG 1968)

I must’ve seen this film something like eight or nine times since I’ve come to UMass. Nevertheless, the mixture of prostitutes against an industrial backdrop, Ferdinand Bruckner’s “The Pains of Youth” by Fassbinder’s antitheater group, and the intense chase/marriage sequence at the end never fail to incite thoughts of alternatives to mainstream cinema and new spatial configurations of narrative.

Seven Women (dir. John Ford, USA 1966)

Ford’s last film is an outright laugh riot starring Anne Bancroft as a self-confident doctor who winds up in a doomed community of American missionaries in Mongolia. Oh wait – this wasn’t supposed to be funny? Then perhaps there’s too much Sirkian irony in this overstuffed, full-color studio epic, which is probably why the film was buried after its creation: Ford’s film is trapped between gender and a hard place. Oh yeah, and there’s actually eight women, but one of them happens to be Chinese…

Coraline (dir. Henry Selick, USA 2009)

Coraline is a well-executed animated feature in glorious 3D that was screened at the HFF as part of our overall 3D research project. Many of the fantastic landscapes, both interiors and exteriors, are enhanced by the 3D effects, but these effects don’t overwhelm the adaptation from the original text. What does overwhelm the adaptation is the inclusion of a male character who has to save Coraline’s butt in the end, classifying it as yet another film with a strong female character who needs a man to both tame and save her. Why can’t Hollywood ever be done with its male heroes?

G-Force (dir. Hoyt Yeatman, USA 2009)

Most 3D films rely on re-vamped spatial relations that make tighter spaces seem even tighter and wide open spaces seem glorious. So what better means of exploring tight spaces and big vistas than making a supremely small cast, through whose eyes we must view the world? Such is the visual premise of G-Force, which has guinea pig commandos saving the world from a silly plot in a classic Jerry Bruckheimer fashion. Nevertheless, the effects are convincing and most of the side-plots are not particularly annoying. I would say: Mr. Yeatman’s background in visual FX for advertising and trailers paid off in a big way for the film, though its effects scenes are so pronounced as to make all of the dialog sequences seem drawn-out and dull. Definitely a movie that attempts to satiate a hyper-active age group. Critics who don’t fully “get” 3D films and who are thoroughly in Pixar’s camp are liable to hate it, but I can root for it from the sidelines.

Wow, you can REALLY tell when a movie is from Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer can you not?

Every part of the sets, locations, etc., look pristine even the “dirty” places, the trailer attacks us with so much relentless action that has 0% real violence or even danger for that matter, but 100% meet-cuteness and a buckload of fake heroism. Also everything is so theme park ready that you can just see the merchandise a mile away. Even if it is calculated commercialism, I won’t mind it as long as it is fun. So taking it from all the other franchises it has been concocted from, it has a 50/50 chance of landing on the side of enjoyable popcorn. We’ll see.

♥ “Mammoth”

In this indie movie, Gael Garcia Bernal (“Y Tu Mama Tambien”) and Michelle Williams (“Brokeback Mountain”) play a couple whose lives start unraveling when Bernal flirts with infidelity on a business trip in Thailand.

The story also focuses on their live-in Filipino nanny, which is exciting since very few Filipino actors breakthrough in Hollywood. “Mammoth” even features subtitles for the actors speaking the Tagalog language. With more than 1,000 votes on IMDb.com, the film has received a 7 out of 10 rating.

♥ “Salt”

This espionage thriller was originally set to have a male lead, but when Tom Cruise (“Collateral”) dropped out of the project, the role was re-written for Angelina Jolie (“Girl, Interrupted”), naturally. Jolie is Evelyn Salt, a CIA agent, who is framed for a plot to murder the president. She must prove her innocence while on the run from authorities. Leaps unto buses ensue.

♥ “Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time”

Jake Gyllenhaal (“Jarhead”) stars in this adaptation of a video game where he, along with a princess (Gemma Arterton from “Quantum of Solace”), must stop a villain from unleashing a sandstorm that could destroy the world.

It sounds lame when you put it like that, but from the trailers, it looks like the film has a good dose of comedy. It’s even produced by powerhouse Jerry Bruckheimer (“Pirates of the Carribean”). Sir Ben Kingsley (“Gandhi”) and Alfred Molina (“Spider-man 2″) also star. Catch the domestic and international trailers after the jump:

♥ “Brothers”

Lionsgate and Relativity Media previously released a trailer for “Brothers,” which I posted here. This is the second trailer of the drama, which stars Tobey Maguire (“Spider-man”), Natalie Portman (“Closer”) and Gyllenhaal. It’s better if you view it without reading a synopsis first, so take a look:

♥ “The Road”

It’s based on Cormac McCarthy’s novel which tells of the end of the world. Hardly anyone is left but Viggo Mortensen (“A History of Violence”), Charlize Theron (“North Country”) and their son, newcomer Kodi Smit-McPhee. Guy Pearce (“Memento”) and Robert Duvall co-star. Dimension Films has also released two trailers for this Oscar contender. They are distinctly different as one is more dreary than the other. See for yourself:

♥ “The Princess and the Frog”

Disney is going back to its roots with this animated movie. Beating the likes of singers Jennifer Hudson and Alicia Keys, Anika Rose (“Dreamgirls”) as well as Terrence Howard (“Hustle and Flow”) and John Goodman (“Coyote Ugly”) voice the characters. A teaser trailer and full trailer below:

♥ ”The Wolfman”

Check out a horror film that boasts of Emily Blunt (“The Devil Wears Prada”), Benicio del Toro (“Traffic”), Anthony Hopkins (“Silence of the Lambs”) and Hugo Weaving (“Lord of the Rings”):

♥ “Inception”

Here’s a film that’s been kept under wraps so much so that all IMDb.com states is this: “Corporations have developed a technology to enter dreams to extract information from certain people’s heads. A CEO (Leonardo DiCaprio) enters dreams and things begin to escalate, taking a turn for the worst.”

The buzz surrounding “Inception” is mostly due to its director, Christopher Nolan, who also did “The Dark Knight” and “Memento.” However, I’m watching it for one of my favorite actresses, Ellen Page (“Juno”). Marion Cotillard (“The Diving Bell and the Butterfly”), Michael Caine (Miss Congeniality”), Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“Brick”) and Cillian Murphy (“Batman Begins”) are in it as well.

♥ “Green Zone”

Although it’s by the same people who brought us “The Bourne” movies, I think some would hesitate to watch it since it’s another war movie. Still, Matt Damon gives it some star power.

♥ “Invictus”

Damon is one hot commodity as he also stars in this Clint Eastwood film, otherwise known as an Oscar contender. Based on a true story, Damon plays the captain of a rugby team who is enlisted by Nelson Mandela (Morgan Freeman) to win, thus, uniting the country. Prepare to hear Damon speak with a South African accent …

♥ “Gentlemen Broncos”

Some have have predicted that “Broncos” will be a cult hit, perhaps in the same vein as “Napoleon Dynamite.” (They have the same director.) “Broncos” is a comedy about a science fiction author who steals the idea of a student (Michael Angarano from “Will and Grace”) for his next book. Jennifer Coolidge (“Legally Blonde”) is also in the movie, playing Angarano’s mom.

♥ “A Single Man”

Colin Firth (“Bridget Jones’s Diary”) plays a gay man who tries to carry on after the death of his partner. Julianne Moore (“Children of Men”) joins Firth, who is a potential Oscar nominee. Based on Christopher Isherwood’s novel, I must say the trailer is pretty original. It eerily plays on with no words the entire time. The film itself received an 8.6 rating on IMDb.com.

♥ “New Moon”

As the second part in the “Twilight” saga, we find Bella (Kristen Stewart) left to gather the pieces with Jacob (Taylor Lautner) since the vampire Edward (Robert Pattinson) left her. This time around, Stewart finds herself among werewolves and vampire royalty, the Volturi.

♥ “The Book of Eli”

Denzel Washington (“Man on Fire”) stars in this action movie set in yet another future depicting the end of the world. To salvage what’s left, Washington has to protect a sacred book. Mila Kunis (“That ’70s Show”) co-stars.

♥ “Nowhere Boy”

I don’t know why, but this feels like the most refreshing trailer out of the bunch. ”Nowhere Boy” is John Lennon (newcomer Aaron Johnson) of The Beatles. It chronicles the band’s beginnings and Lennon’s life. Kristin Scott Thomas (“Life as a House”) is part of the supporting cast.

♥ “The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus”

Perhaps better known as Heath Ledger’s (“The Dark Knight”) last film, Dr. Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) strikes a deal with the devil, trading in his daughter at the age of 16. Parnassus tries to rectify his mistake by offering his daughter’s hand in marriage to whoever can help him. Jude Law (“Closer”), Colin Farrell (“Minority Report”) and Johnny Depp (“Blow”) all stepped in to finish Ledger’s role.

♥ “When in Rome”

In this romantic comedy, Kristen Bell (“Forgetting Sarah Marshall”) takes some coins out of a fountain only to have the men who threw them in fall for her. The lovesick puppies include Josh Duhamel (“Transformers”), Will Arnett (“Blades of Glory”), Jon Heder (“Napoleon Dynamite”) and Bell’s real-life beau, Dax Shepard (“Baby Mama”).

♥ “Dear John”

Another Nicholas Sparks’s book, another movie adaptation. By now, I should know better than to fall for Sparks’s sap, but the trailer was enchanting. Channing Tatum (“Stop Loss”) and Amanda Seyfried (“Nine Lives”) fall in love, but Tatum, a soldier, has to return to war. *Tear*

♥ “Pirate Radio” (aka “The Boat that Rocked”)

Richard Curtis, the man behind the darling “Love Actually,” brings a new movie to the big screen. The film already has more than 11,000 voters rating it 7.6 out of 10 stars. “Radio” is a comedy about DJs who air their show on the high seas. Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (“Doubt”) joins the ensemble cast.

♥ “The Messenger”

IMDb users give this movie 8.6 stars. “Messenger” centers on the soldiers, Woody Harrelson (“Zombieland”) and Ben Foster (“Alpha Dog”), who are tasked with notifying the loved ones of their fallen comrades. Things are complicated when Foster gets involved with a soldier’s widow. Acclaimed actresses, Samantha Morton (“Minority Report”) and Jena Malone (“Stepmom”), round out the cast.

♥ “Alice in Wonderland”

This Tim Burton film hasn’t been released yet, but it’s already won an award. “Alice” was proclaimed the Most Anticipated Fantasy Film at the 2009 Scream Awards. If that still doesn’t convince you to see it, Oscar nominees Anne Hathaway (“Rachel Getting Married”) and Depp are in the movie.

By Fred Topel – SciFiWire.com

Jerry Bruckheimer is developing a new movie based on The Lone Ranger, the popular western hero from radio plays and movie serials, and Johnny Depp is attached to play the Native American sidekick, Tonto.

Bruckheimer said to expect Depp to do for Tonto what he did with Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean.

“[Pirates writers Ted] Elliot and [Terry] Rossio worked on that also with some other writers and with Johnny [Depp],” Bruckheimer said in a group interview last week in Santa Monica, Calif. “So they’re creating something that has a kind of true-to-the-western [feel], but adding other additional elements like we did with Pirates so it won’t be just a straight-ahead western.”

Depp’s choice to play the Native American sidekick fits the actor’s quirky tastes. Bruckheimer has his work cut out for him finding a lead who can make a good Ranger to a superstar Tonto.
“We’re still creating a pretty wide net and figuring it out,” Bruckheimer said. “It comes down to who is available when we want to make it. We have a wish list.”
The Lone Ranger is in development for a tentative 2012 release date.
