When it comes to trashy movies, there are generally two different categories. The first is the trashy movie that knows it’s a trashy movie, while the second and much, much worst category is the trashy movie that has no awareness of its trashiness. Luckily, Obsessed falls into the former category and builds to the climax that everyone who’s anyone wants to see. It also manages to reach the inexorable apex of its story without being boring along the way, which certainly earns it some points.

Directed by Steve Shill, who has worked on some pretty terrific HBO programs, Obsessed picks up on the scenario from Fatal Attraction somewhat and builds it to a knock-down-drag-out fight in the final sequences. This is a movie that is all about the build and all about the tension of what will happen and it uses every resource imaginable to do so.

Idris Elba is good as the happily married Derek Charles. He’s a successful executive vice president of a successful company and he’s living the dream. Derek’s marriage to Sharon Charles (Beyoncé Knowles) is a happy one and their child, Kyle, is the centre of their universe. As one might expect, everything changes when temp Lisa Sheridan (Ali Larter) steps into the picture. She meets Derek in an elevator and instantly becomes envious of what he has.

Lisa obsesses over Derek, using all of her assets to get at him in any possible way. She aims to seduce him initially, but the obsession grows and she begins to want to be in his life as a permanent fixture. Derek is having none of it, however, and this puts a significant strain on her plan. She works hard to get at him, drugging him at a business retreat and taking advantage of him. This leads to difficulty between Derek and Sharon, but the truth eventually comes out and leads to Sharon “asserting herself.”

One doesn’t go see a popcorn flick like Obsessed to ruminate about the nuances of the performances or the direction. Shill does work some nice tricks, though, and his approach to the material is clean and unfussy. He builds objects well, like a drink with a drug in it or a glass table, and knows how to draw our attention to the right places.

The match-up between Larter and Knowles is every bit as good as it should be, invoking every piece of cheesy fight cliché to get the job done in a sequence that literally tears the house apart. The two women really go at it and it works as a fun, thrilling sequence that ends as it should. It is the main event of the picture and Shill delivers the goods with a combination of timing and over-the-top glee. It’s a hell of a lot of fun to watch.

Obsessed is really a simple motion picture. Everybody holds up their end of the bargain and nobody comes up short, including the supporting cast. This is a movie that doesn’t stretch, doesn’t move mountains and doesn’t overreach. It certainly knows its boundaries and Shill does well to work within his parameters, taking few risks and delivering an entertaining, satisfying guilty pleasure of a picture that boasts a really cool fight scene to close things off aptly.

The film doesn’t bore along the way, either, and it’s fun to watch Larter attempt to scoop Elba’s character with a variety of sneaky attempts. She plays a good villainous woman here and matches up well with Knowles’ assertive but happy Sharon. There are also some good early moments that allow each actress to try their hand at subtle digs. Overall, Obsessed is just good fun. It’s a good matinee or drive-in picture that goes down easy with a soda and a nice big tub of popcorn.

5.9/10

On a personal level, 1986 was a pretty big year in my life. Arguably the most significant. I was conceived and born within the confines of 1986. Pretty damn important. Despite the importance of this year, I do not remember a damn thing. Based on pictures, though, I was especially adorable.

1986 was also a ridiculously excellent year in popular culture, and making the call on what to present has been one of the hardest decisions of Twenty-Three. But, I have made the call, and so begins this adventure in self punishment.

Stand By Me is a 1986 coming of age film adapted from Stephen King’s novella, The Body. I haven’t read the novella (I do intend to) but the film is so excellent that I’m going to go out on a limb and say something that I will probably never say again in my life: it is impossible that the book could be better.

Adaptation or not, Stand By Me is a perfect balance of drama and comedy, brilliantly scripted and acted, and incredibly genuine. On the ridiculously slim chance that you dislike the film, the scenery is gorgeous so at the very least it’s pretty to look at.

The story follows four boys; Gordie, Chris, Teddy and Vern on an adventure to find the body of another kid their age who had gone missing a few days earlier. They rag on each other, try to beat the shit out of each other on at least one occasion, narrowly escape death, and bond with one another along the way. Each boy has a fucked up back-story with which they are trying to come to terms (with the exception of Vern, but I get the sense that he’s just pathetic and probably the kind of kid that would be in special ed if he were 12 today), and we watch them come into their own over a two-day mission through the woods.

The film switches beautifully between comedic scenes:

and some emotional scenes (some seriously good acting by River Phoenix here):

and dramatic scenes (River Phoenix as Chris Chambers seems to be considered the best performance of this film, but tell me that Corey Feldman’s Teddy Duchamp is anything other than excellent here):

And what a line with, “I’m gonna rip your head off and shit down your neck!” I wish I could have thought of shit like that when I was 12. I wish I could think of shit like that now.

I cannot possibly do the film justice. Stand By Me is not my favorite movie, but probably makes almost any top-5 list I could create. It is an amazing piece of cinema, and something I believe everybody needs to watch at least once in his/her life, if for no other reason than to be reminded of a time when you had a gang of friends who would have gotten themselves killed for you without a second thought.

And given an opportunity probably still would, because they know you for who you could be rather than who you are or aren’t.

The film’s final verbal communication with the audience is through an adult Gordie (played by Richard Dreyfus, credited as simply “The Writer”) typing the close of the memoir that Stand By Me exists as. The line reads, “I never had any friends later on like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?”

And it’s perfection.

The actor starred in the film when he was just 11 but, despite many more big TV parts, it seems this is the role everyone is still interested in. In fact ‘Rebecca Romijn’s Husband Stand By Me’ is one of Google’s top search terms today.

Rebecca gave birth to twin girls Dolly Rebecca Rose and Charlie Tamara Tulip last December- making the cutest family around.

Check out the pics of this happy foursome, taken back in July….

When Lex Luthor becomes President, he begins a campaign to frame Superman for murder in another attempt to bring down the Man of Steel.

Directed by – Sam Liu

Written by – Stan Berkowitz, Jeph Loeb, Ed McGuinness

Starring – Eric Bauza, Xander Berkeley, Clancy Brown, Corey Burton, Levar Burton, Ricardo Chavira, Kevin Conroy, Tim Daly, Grey DeLisle, Michael Dorn, Hector Elizondo, Jennifer Hale, Allison Mack, John C. McGinley, Jerry O’Connell, Robert Patrick, CCH Pounder, Susan Roman, Fred Tatasciore, Tony Todd, Thomas F. Wilson, Chiara Zanni

Oh DC, where have I gone wrong with you? You were making these great animated movies with a slight adult slant and now you’ve reverted back to general kiddie fare! I thought we had a good thing going.

Yes, unfortunately, Superman/Batman doesn’t live up to all the previous movies that fall under the direct to DVD market that DC has ventured into. It’s not bad by any means, but it’s lacking something that made Green Lantern, Wonder Woman and especially Justice League, so great. The animation is well done and really holds true to the comic interpretation this story is based on. There’s a couple of moments where CG for the background really clashes with the animated characters in the foreground but beyond that it’s well done.

Even Batman has to unwind now and again.

The plot goes like this, Lex Luthor has become the President and is trying to get costumed heroes to fight for him. One way to hold his power over them, and he wants nothing more than to have Superman under his control. Superman isn’t having any of that of course, so Lex Luthor frames him for murder. At the same time, there’s a giant meteorite made of kryptonite hurtling towards Earth. Lex Luthor plans to destroy it to show the public what a great hero he is and is hoping that it will help him gain control over Superman, since Superman can’t destroy it himself.

His whole plan goes down the crapper and he ends up reverting back to the psychotic villain that he is. And we all live happily ever after. I guess that’s typical comic book action anyway so I won’t knock the plot. I just really hoped for something more out of this. There is plenty of action though, with Superman and Batman having to stand against hero and villain alike. Lex Luthor has put a 1 billion dollar bounty on Superman and that gets all the villains to crawl out of the sewers and try to take him on. On top of that, the heros that work with Luthor are trying to bring Superman to justice.

It's a bad day when even the heroes are against you.

This means about the last half of the movie, maybe even more actually, is one fight after another. That works out well because that’s what I was really hoping to see. And while that’s all good, I still couldn’t figure out what was missing from this one that left me wanting more. Maybe it’s the fact that the film doesn’t challenge how we think about Superman and Batman. They do exactly what they always do, stand for justice in the world, and that’s kinda boring. Green Lantern had a humour to it, Wonder Woman had plenty of violence (they are Amazons ya know!) and Justice League was a different look at the history of the DC Universe. Superman/Batman is just another animated movie featuring DC Characters. At least they managed to fit a ton of characters in there.

Under the marquee – Will

Ten years ago, Five prowling lady-killers decided that they would make a bet to which man would be t

Ten years ago, Five prowling lady-killers decided that they would make a bet to which man would be the last to marry.

The last man to remain a “tomcat” would get the grand prize. As the years ticked by the bet money grew to $500,000 and it came down to two finalists. The two finalists consist of a disgusting womanizing pig, Kyle Brenner (Jake Busey) and a prowling cartoonist, Michael Delaney (Jerry O’Connell).

While on a trip to Vegas for one of the losing lady-killers weddings, Michael falls really hard for a voluptuous redhead who woos him into impressing her by playing craps. Michael ends up in the hole, $50,000, and indebted to a Vegas thug (Bill Maher). His only course of action to stop the thug from killing him is to win the bet. But he would have to get Kyle to marry in 30 days. What is Kyle to do? Can he find the girl of Kyle’s dreams in time? And what happens when you get your heart stuck in a place it shouldn’t be in.

“Tomcats” is the kind of movie that would be made if Playboy wanted to make a “gross-out” comedy about sex. Well I am partially right. There are playmates (or wannabe’s) in the movie, Shannon Elisabeth has graced those pages and there are some gross-out scenes.

This film was a little strange to watch after seeing “Someone Like You” last week. In that review I complained about the film alienating men. Well “Tomcats” does the complete opposite by turning women into bimbos and sex-objects. I guess that is Hollywood’s definition of a male-clichéd movie. From watching these two films no wonder men and women don’t understand each other.

Jerry O'Connell

The film is contrived, predictable and overtly sexual. It’s like “Sex in the City” meets “Porky’s” meets “Worth Winning”. The tone is rather nasty and a lot of the performances were over the top. The strange thing is this film made me laugh at times and reminded me of the 80’s romp movies. Movies like “Jocks”, “Revenge of the Nerds” and of course the classic “Porky’s”. What was however different in this movie is that there is a lot of sexual discussion and implication but very little nudity (two male-buttocks) and or follow-through. In some ways Tomcats is a lot tamer than those 80’s films but no where near as enjoyable. The comedies back then didn’t feel staged and they didn’t try to be way, way over the top or for that matter strike a low blow for a laugh.

Jake Busey is the perfect jerk in his portrayal of Kyle. You really hate this guy. Jerry O’Connell is some what likeable as the hero but not perfect. As for the female leads there really isn’t anything memorable even Shannon Elizabeth’s beauty and Jamie Pressly’s teasing really never leave a mark. But you can’t blame these actresses they really had very little to work with. I did like the fact that Pressly’s husband (Horatio Sanz) in the film was paranoid about his wife becoming a lesbian. That was one of the better gags but even I am reaching.

“Tomcats” is a really bad comedy that may make you laugh but don’t run to see it.

1 out of 5

So Says the Soothsayer.

Sam Sharma/Pacific Coast News

Making good on earlier statements by husband Jerry O’Connell, mom-of-two Rebecca Romijn confirms to E! that the shop is — indeed — closed! “I’m pretty sure that this is it,” the 36-year-old star of Eastwick says in a new interview. “We feel like the world was made for pairs.”

“Four feels like the perfect number. Also, we’re not interested in overpopulating this world…So we feel like we don’t want to leave more than we are when we leave this planet.”

Signing on to the show — debuting Sept. 23 at 10 p.m. on ABC — was something Rebecca initially had no intention of doing, but the project proved too good to pass up. “I had put it out there that I just wanted to be a mom for six months and not even think about work at all,” she explains. “I told the powers-that-be if anything came across their desks that I’d be devastated if I missed out on it, to make sure that I knew about it.”

When the pilot was shot Rebecca was still nursing twins Dolly Rebecca Rose and Charlie Tamara Tulip, 8 months, and she concedes that the long days on set wreak havoc with her emotions. “Mother’s guilt is no joke,” she notes.

“I feel like any stretch of time I spend away from them, I’m worried that I’m missing out on just these little miracles. Like you watch them stare at their hand for an hour and they go take a three-hour nap and they wake up and they can do something that they didn’t do before — like wave!”

Now don’t go getting all bent out of shape I do not mean any harshness towards children

Now don’t go getting all bent out of shape I do not mean any harshness towards children who are considered husky (I have a child myself who fits into that category). However I would like to point out that in a little movie, you may have heard of it, that featured four boys walking on a train track no one looked to the chubby kid as being the cute one. It’s ok you can admit it. Vern was the last boy are fickle preteen minds thought of as being cute. But what a difference a decade makes:

Oh yeah ladies Jerry O’Connell is all grown up and no one thinks of him as the chubby kid from Stand By Me. Kind of makes you want to look up that kid from 9th grade English that you never gave a second’s thought about, doesn’t it? But alas hindsight is 50/50 and even though we are unable to go back in time with the knowledge we have now. Maybe, just maybe we can pass on wisdom we have acquired.

And if the young lady in your life balks at the idea that the chubby kid who sits behind her in Math isn’t worth her time just bring her here and show her the actors pictured below. She may just end up giving that boy another glance.

(Matthew Lewis from Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone)

Fame Celebrities often vow to alternate their work commitments in order to always have one full-time

Fame

Celebrities often vow to alternate their work commitments in order to always have one full-time parent at home with the kids, but Jerry O’Connell is putting his time (and money!) where his mouth is.

When news first broke that the 35-year-old actor had enrolled in Southwestern Law School in Los Angeles, it seemed a surprising choice. Speaking to Celebrity Baby Blog on Saturday night at the Much Love Animal Rescue’s third annual summer fundraiser Bow Wow WOW Howlywood!, however, Jerry said that it was his 8-month-old twin daughters Dolly Rebecca Rose and Charlie Tamara Tulip who sparked his detour from the glitz and glamour of Hollywood.

“I’m taking the next while off because my wife [actress Rebecca Romijn] is working on Eastwick. I’m not going to be working for the next eight months because we agreed that one of us that would be with the kids.”

Citing the “pretty long hours” Rebecca will be working, Jerry feels that now is “a good time” for law school. “I’ve always planned on going,” he shared before noting, “It’s just night school.” Joking that he “better not fail out now” because “people will make fun,” Jerry says that the public pressure is motivating him “to study hard and get good grades.” One thing is for certain: PEOPLE’s Babies ‘09 issue earned high marks from the proud papa, who exclaimed,

“What a great little piece your magazine did for myself and my two little girls. It was so cute. It was so cute.”

Unfortunately, the smell of his daughters’ poop isn’t the only embarrassing thing O’Connell has had to deal with lately on the set of of wifey Rebecca Romijn’s ABC show Eastwick…

“I went to my wife’s work yesterday, and she was in the middle of a very dramatic scene,” O’Connell said. “And I had the kids there, and one of them was like, ‘Bwaaahhh.’ It was very verbal and busted the scene up.”

“I thought it was funny, but I don’t think the director did, so I got the heck out of there,” he continued. “I had a long talk with the girls about show business, but I don’t think they had any idea what the heck I was talking about.”

It sounds like a set of twin girls are about all this celebrity clan can handle. “This is it,” O’Connell said. “Factory closed. It’s over. Now we’re just adopting dogs.”

In PEOPLE’s latest issue, Jerry O’Connell — proud dad to fraternal twin daughters Charlie Tamara Tul

In PEOPLE’s latest issue, Jerry O’Connell — proud dad to fraternal twin daughters Charlie Tamara Tulip and Dolly Rebecca Rose — gives readers a peek into his life at home with the girls, 8 months.

Sharing personal photos snapped by the actor and wife Rebecca Romijn, Jerry discusses being a stay at home dad — and learning to love pink!

I grew up with all boys in my family, where there was no place for girlie stuff.

But it’s amazing to walk into my house now.

Everything is pink!

When we first brought Dolly and Charlie home, Rebecca would say, “We’re going out, let’s put them in this dress.”

At first I thought it was impractical.

They’re going to poop and throw up in it anyway.

What’s the point?

But now I understand dressing girls: Kelly Ripa gave us the nicest girlie dresses.

They’re their go-to fancy wear — they’re so fancy, I can only wash them in Woolite!

When they were being photographed for InStyle, I found myself brushing their hair.

Now that there’s a little more to work with, I can experiment just a bit more. Listen to me, I sound like Paul Mitchell! I can do mini-pigtails on Charlie, and on Dolly I can get barrettes in her hair.

One of my favorite things is putting them in their carriage, walking them around, and having people stop me and saying, “Tell me about your girls.”

Charlie likes to interact with people, and Dolly likes to study things.

There’s something fun about it. It’s like having a new car except it’s two lives. I’m proud.

Rebecca wants one of us to be home with the kids at all times. So while she’s working, I’ve been at home, and it’s been really fun.

My wife likes to give them milk when they wake up, but I’ve made some changes to the system.

I like to let them play and then give them solid food. I get in a lot of trouble, but I feed them in front of the TV with Sesame Street. They love it.

At bedtime I softly sing rap songs like Slick Rick or Biggie Smalls — without the curse words. I have favorite little bedtime nighties I put them in that say, “I love Project Runway.”

It’s a different experience to be with your kids when your spouse isn’t around. We have an area where they play; I go in there, and they climb all over me like two pet monkeys.

We have three dogs, if I act like one of the dogs with the dogs, they go crazy — we’re talking Richard Pryor in his heyday. I’ve never had people laugh at me so hard.

I think of myself as a funny guy but nobody thinks I’m funnier than my daughters. Whenever I try to scold them, if I’m feeding them and they put their hands in the food bowl, or when they’re pulling each other’s hair, they think it’s the funniest thing in the world.

There’s no better feeling than making your little girls laugh.

When you have little girls, you’re the coolest person in the world.

I know at some point that’s going to end; in their adolescence I’ll become the opposite of that, especially if I’m parked outside a high school party.

When that time comes, I’m going to read up on Judy Blume, rent some Molly Ringwald films and watch Twilight.

The amazing thing about all this is that it ends at some point.

My wife said, “The factory is closed.”

That’s not a lie. The factory is closed! You can’t make anything else.

You just have to appreciate every moment.
