1.	CONFUSE. Create a graphic t-shirt design that forces people to look again. It can be a simple design, but one that is just too silly to not look at one more time, or something so difficult to decipher yet catchy enough that people keep looking at your torso while they speak. The graphic t-shirts that have most caught my attention are those who have large lettering to get you to start reading, but contain a kicker in small letters that you must read from up close to figure out. Treat graphic t-shirts like billboards in the subway: if people don’t somehow feel confused they probably won’t try and figure out what the rest of the tee says. Another way to confuse people is to use a graphic design that just makes no sense. One t shirt I saw showed a triangle trying to escape from between rows of bars – multi-color bars. It just made no sense, but definitely forced me to look at it.

2.	FUNKIFY. Make graphic t-shirts that have funk written all over them. Not literally. It is a trend for now, but it is an effective way to making tshirts that are cool. Take a cartoon image – say of an astronaut listening to a boom box – add some colors behind him, with an 80’s touch to it – and you will have a funky-looking graphic tee. Curvy lettering, hot colors, simple designs all can give you a funky feel. Design your graphic t shirt while you listen to some Maceo Parker and that should help too.

3.	GO RETRO. Take it back in time with a graphic tee design that reminds people of another epoch. Right now, the 80’s are hot. Until recently, it was the 70’s. What does this mean? Plenty of overuse of multiple color schemes meant to bring out lettering, 3-D effects, rock star band t-shirt designs, and Madonna. American Eagle has been using a lot of retro-looking designs in its shirts, using distressed screens to print some of them so that they have an old look. Their designs are getting old though, now that graphic t-shirts are cooler when they look like they’re from the 80’s.

4.	BE IRONIC. Design a tshirt that is simple enough that people can interpret and that is incongruent with the situation. The surrealists were the masters of this. Follow Duchamp’s lead and design a graphic t-shirt that says something that is clearly untrue or that just makes no sense. Retro-irony used to be funny, but is now being used less often. By retro irony, I mean an old advertisement that has a new meaning today. Some graphic t-shirts still have these designs.

5.	BE UNCONVENTIONAL. Take a common graphic t-shirt design and do something else with it. Take a design that people are accustomed to – say a rainbow – and make it drip like wet paint. Take unicorns and show them having sex. Just whatever it is, make sure it pops with creative thought. Your tee should send a message that is not lost in translation, that breaks some barriers.

6.	BE SILLY. Design a graphic tee that will put a smile on everyone’s face. A bunch of fingers on a hand visit their injured partner the thumb, a bear watching TV in the middle of the forest, telling stupid raisins to stay out of your cookies, and two lemons helping another lemon cut in half, carrying him on a stretcher… (lemon aid). Silly graphic t-shirts get messages across easily and effectively, often without offending, which is a good quality to have. It is all too easy to make offensive graphic t-shirts.

7.	KEEP IT SIMPLE. Simplicity in a graphic t shirt can sometimes be the most effective tool to convey a message – that is, if you have one. Graphic tees can be made just to look cool, and not to pass any kind of message at all. A giant circle with splotches of paint around it, or just common vector images that do not really say much more than “I like colors.” Sometimes one or two words will do the job. Being vague is important in graphic t-shirts to draw interest and simplicity is the key to being vague.

8.	TALK ABOUT YOURSELF. Graphic t-shirts that ridicule others are easy to design. However, what is more interesting is to ridicule oneself. I have seen some funny variations on the idea. There are many tshirts out there that make drunk jokes about the wearer of the shirt. Of course, you can always wear graphic t-shirts that says something about you without doing so directly. If you wear a skull t shirt, it could signify that you are into gothic.

9.	USE 3-D. Three-dimensional graphic t-shirts are part of a return to the 50’s with an extra dose of Warhol. These graphic tees don’t necessarily work if you wear 3-D glasses but sure look like you need to in order to understand them. The main use of this type of graphic tshirt is on gangster-type tees that show explicit scenes that are better left in 3-D.

10.	CALL TO ATTENTION. You can get someone to look at your graphic t-shirt in various ways. You can draw their attention with an arrow, because usually that means you are pointing something out around them that they may be able to relate to. You can address them by using “You” in your graphic t-shirts. In any case, it must engage your viewers in some way.

Yesterday morning I went out with Conor and two guys from Kissena (Wai and Patrick) up to Piermont and back, a nice ride with nice company. The weather was perfect for this time of year; relatively warm and sunny. On the way back Conor stopped off and handed me the new El Cyclista kit that had just been made in a limited run by Champion System, super nice kit with great style. I particularly love the subtle pink band around the right leg, very classy.

New Jersey Head Coach Lawrence Frank was fired today by the head office. After an 0-16 start, one game away from an NBA worst for starts in history. Assistant headcoach Tom Barisse would be coacing the team until further notice.
As said on NBA.com “Frank was in his sixth full season, the longest-tenured coach in the Eastern Conference and the winningest coach in the Nets’ NBA history. But none of those victories came this season, and the team dismissed him with a 225-241 record.

A holka.

No ale, však on pan frontman ví, co dělá. Vycizelovaná věc, panečku. A když zpívali acapella akusticky na balkoně nad uplně tichým publikem? Uhůů.

Rewind, wžum wžum wžum
Jersey! No jó.

A v BeatPolu mají ty hajzlové každou kapelu.

Hallo everyone, my you look super nice today…

That’s right, I’m after something. As some of you will know I took part in the 48 Hour Film Challenge over in Jersey a few months back. Now the time has come to call in backup and get people voting for the film so we can win jubilation and slap each other on the back (oh, and win some cash as well which is always nice). The setup is teams arrived in the same place on the same day, picked a title and genre from a hat at random… and then had 48hrs in which to write, shoot, edit and finalise a short film. We picked ‘crime’ and ‘Morning Mist’.

ACTION!

So after a little lag of delay all the films created on the Vauxhall 48 Hour Film Challenge have been put up for the mercy of viewers to vote. And this is where you come in, yes you. I’m looking at you, you’re looking at me. We’ve got this eye contact thing nailed.

All the films are over here: (click here and vote for ‘Morning Mist’)

And all the films are great but this is where I have to draw the line in this so-called free-loving atmosphere. I want you to vote for my film because I’m proud of it and hey, we made it in 48 hours. This is where you tell me that the others were too, seeing as it’s called the 48 Hour Film Challenge, but ignore that. Eyes on me, go click on the ol’ 5 stars bit on ‘Morning Mist’. And I’m sorry if you’ve already heard this spiel on Facebook or Twitter. It just means I love you a little bit more than the rest, just a little mind you. People talk.

I will love you all that little bit more than is allowed.

Thank you, love you, I’m afraid I can’t do that I’m not allowed anymore.

Much love,

Kx.

p.s. I forgot to mention you do have to join which only takes a few seconds but once you’re on there you can download short films for pittance and what’s more you can download them, burn them and keep them all for yourself. You do not have to pay to join. Good? Great.

p.p.s. Plus all the films will be screened as part of the London Short Film Festival (y’know, the projector with teeth?) at the Roxy in London Bridge area. If you’re around that time and want to see some films and the people behind it… why not come along. I’ll be there, hope that doesn’t dissuade you.

Jersey, one of the Channel Islands in the English Channel (in contrast to Jersey, USA), is a small y

Jersey, one of the Channel Islands in the English Channel (in contrast to Jersey, USA), is a small yet beautiful island, perfect for a short holiday.

The island itself is as far south as France (St. Malo is less than 4 miles away and visible on a clear day) and so whilst still part of the British empire it benefits from far better weather.

This weather means not only an ideal place for camping, beaches and outdoor persuits but also you will see a profusion of plants and animals not normally seen on mainland Britain. Most notable is the only British population of the Green Lizard, often nicknamed the Jersey Green Lizard for just this very reason. Reaching around a foot long, and the males possessing a bright blue throat they are certainly a wonderful (if rare) sight to behold. Red squirrels can still be seen here for the eagle-eyed and dolphins may often be seen during the summer months.

Talking of beaches, whilst the island only measures a few miles long there are beaches for all ocassions. Long, sandy beaches perfect for surfing, more protected “sun bather” beaches and wild rocky outcrops covered in breeding sea birds. There are even some caves that only appear at low tide.

You can arrive by ferry or plane as Jersey is well served by both a safe port at St. Helier or an airport on the west side of the island.

Escaping from the attractive but busy main town of St. Helier, venture to the northern half of the island for the “true” Jersey experience. Rolling fields filled with Jersey cows producing thick, delicious cream. Farmers fields green with the tops of Jersey Royals – the finest new potatos around. Greenhouses filled with flame-red tomatoes. Foxglove-strewn laybys and meadows and the deep blue sea. There are also castles and fishing-boat filled coves to enjoy.

Jersey has a low national speed limit, plenty of narrow tracks and a “no caravan” rule making it a great place to walk or cycle, and an efficient local bus service covers the entire island. Exploring this small island is therefore safe, practical and incredibly good fun.

Other things to see here are the underground tunnels used by the Nazis during the war (the Channel Islands are as far north as the invasion got) and the world-famous Durrell Wildlife Preservation Trust (or just “Jersey Zoo”!). It was here that a small boy fell into the gorilla pit many years ago much to the shock of his parents. Alive, but scared, rather than being attacked, the boy was watched over and looked after by the gorillas until keepers were able to extract him safely.

Personally, I like to camp though there are plenty of hotels around (less self catering accomodation though) of an international standard. Being a tax haven, Jersey boasts rich businessmen, private jets and Ferraris making it a more British Monaco. English is spoken, they drive on the left and they use the pound. There is, however, a lovely “French” feel in the style of the houses, many French place names and in the excellent quality of food available here – especially the seafood.

The Channel Islands also consist of Guernsey, Alderney and Sark, all of which can be reached by one of the inter-island boat services in operation over the summer months and day trips to France from here are easy to arrange.

No takers for Team India sponsorship!! http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/top-stories

No takers for Team India sponsorship!! http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/sports/cricket/top-stories/No-takers-for-Team-India-sponsorship/articleshow/5262362.cms

BCCI may be puzzled but it is not so unthinkable – at least at BCCI’s current asking price. Gone are the days when miniature radios literally grew out of common man’s ears for the entire five days duration of a test match. Or half the office personnel took a ‘sick leave’ because a crucial one – dayer was on.

The nation was cricket-mad for long but in recent times interest in the game is witnessing a continual decline. There is an overdose of cricket. And overdoses KILL. Add in not enough match wins and fewer championship wins and the public has enough and valid reasons to lose interest in the game. In recent times the laurels brought in by Team India have been few and far between. The first T20 World Cup seems a thing of the distant past.

The marketer is savvy too. He has an option of lot more avenues to choose from for his rupee and for his brand’s visibility – especially in these economically hard times.

This is the most obvious explanation as to why the marketers have shied away from the BCCI tender.

BUT there might be a deeper and more valid reason for the marketer to be afraid of committing hara-kiri!! If someone like Sachin Tendulkar is being berated for being an Indian first and Marathi next – what if there comes a time when there is no ‘Indian’ team left! The sponsor would then be left with holding empty jerseys with no ‘Indians’ to adorn them.

We have been waiting for some time now to play and perform live. That time is still a ways away. Working on a large collection of songs. Will perform a long run of local summer shows. Will be exciting to play shows after a band has rehearsed and essentially, been a band already for two years. All the songs will be free. The eventual album with artwork by Nico Lucido (above and below) will be substantially cheap, but hopefully not cheaply made (a joke?) : ) Enough of this, see you soon.

I heard that Amazon now has a global version of Kindle. I was disappointed to find this morning that the new version still will not work in my country.

Since I’ve wanted one for some time, but have been waiting until they got a version that would work in my country, I checked out their website this morning, only to be disappointed again. Apparently the new global version will only work in SOME countries.

In case you are thinking of purchasing the new Global Kindle for a Christmas gift this year, since the new version will only work in SOME countries, I thought it would be helpful to most expats to have a complete list of which countries it will, or will not work in.

Back when I went to the first pre-season game it was suggested that I go to a regular season. The Colts were still available and that was the game to go to. Mainly because of the rivalry after Indianapolis stole the Baltimore Colts. I never will look at a Mayflower moving van the same way.

I got up early, fed the horses, and took a shower. When I dressed, I knew exactly what I wanted to wear. Team Smitty T-shirt on the bottom. The Ravens long sleeved shirt that I got for John for Christmas in the middle. The Jersey that John got me for Christmas on top. Luckily, I managed to pull off the look without appearing like some child wearing 20 layers before going out to play in the snow.

John’s Aunt watched Nathaniel and from what I hear the two of them had a marvelous day. Nathaniel was appropriately dressed in a Ravens jersey as well.

I had my first tailgating experience. Mmmm… delicious. I’m not a drinker or a party person, but it was fun to do something different and hang out with adults. I didn’t have to spoon feed anybody and everybody was capable of getting food into their mouths and not requiring me to wipe food off of their noses.

Tailgating

The girls- Karen, Kari, & Me

After fun, merriment, and full tummies, we headed in to watch the game.

Before we went to our seats there was a stop at the ladies room. I had to smile and think of John.

When John was interested in purchasing the PSLs he was big time trying to sell me on the idea. I’d never been to a game. I thought the PSLs and tickets were way too expensive. Club level is for the upper-crust… I’m firmly in the filling layer. On the flip side. John had been diagnosed stage III and I never wanted to interfere with dreams. I didn’t want him to ever be dying and say, “I wish I’d gotten the Ravens PSLs like I wanted…” Without dreams… what are we?

John had stopped by the stadium on his way home from work to see the seats. When he came home he had a glow on his face and was so excited to tell me about them.

He told me about the nice heated lounges… how the seats were under an overhang and would be protected from the weather… and how close our section was to the ladies bathroom…

I never argued with John about the tickets… he wanted them so badly. If we could make it work then it was fine with me. We got a loan and I was supposed to get fence out of the arrangement, but that is still yet to happen.

Smiling thinking of John

Somewhere I see some irony… John… the john… lol…

John was a thinking… he did things on his own time and thought them through. Sometimes, I appreciated it. Sometimes, it would drive me batty. Now, I miss it…

Me in our seats

Sadly, John never got to use his tickets of course if I’m right, he has the best seat in the house.

John certainly didn’t help the Ravens out today. But, if I know my husband, his answer would be… they need to do it on their own. They shouldn’t need my help.

The game was exciting. We lost by two points. Had we played better we could have won. Had they played better they could have won by more. You win some and you lose some– in life an on the football field. But, even when you loose it doesn’t mean that you can’t enjoy the experience– on the football field and in life…
