Power Thursday (03/Dic/09)

Power Thursday

4. Chargers

[8-3] Aplastaron a los jefes y ahora irán a aplastar a los cafés

3. Colts

It appears that the Bomber’s skipper was on hand to teach rookie QB Mark Sanchez the finer points in sliding. Girardi also plans on heading to Buffalo this weekend to work with Rangers’ goalie Henrik Lundqvist. Apparently Girardi has been an avid ice resurfacer over the years and his plan to drive the zamboni between periods is also in the cards. Add the Nets to the list as well, Rod Thorn has contacted Yankee brass to have Girardi play the point for Kiki Vandeweghe and his 0-18 club for Friday night’s game against Charlotte.

Week 13 NFL Preview

Will week 13 be unlucky for an undefeated team? New Orleans is coming off an emotional Monday night win over New England. The Saints have what looks like a relatively easy game at Washington, but this could be a much closer game than expected.

11-0 Indianapolis has clinched the AFC South Division and owns a three game lead over Cincinnati and San Diego for home field advantage. They face the suddenly streaking Tennessee Titans, winners of five games in a row after beginning the year 0-6. Tennessee basically has to run the table to earn an improbable and virtually impossible playoff spot.

NFL football returns to the Rogers Centre in Toronto Thursday night when the Bills and the Jets hook up. It should be a fun one to watch for the folks in Ontario, and a sellout could bolster the chances for North America’s fifth largest city obtaining an NFL franchise one day.

The must-win teams this week are: The Jets against Buffalo; Pittsburgh against Oakland (uncertainty at QB for the Steelers); Houston and Jacksonville; Tennessee against Indianapolis; Atlanta and Philadelphia; San Francisco against Seattle; The Giants against Dallas; and Green Bay and Baltimore.

PiRate NFL Playoff Speculation

In the NFC, New Orleans and Minnesota will be the top two seeds and get a bye. The third and fourth seeds will be Dallas and Arizona. We believe the Giants, Falcons, Packers, and Eagles could all finish 9-7. If the 49ers win this week at Seattle, they too could win nine games. It’s a crapshoot to try to determine the tiebreakers with five weeks to go, but we’ll pencil in Green Bay and Philadelphia into those slots.

In the AFC, Indianapolis, Cincinnati, San Diego, and New England have all but wrapped up division titles. Denver’s schedule gives them an excellent opportunity to get to 10 wins. Baltimore, Pittsburgh, Houston, Jacksonville, the New York Jets, and even Tennessee all have shots at 9-7 records. Again, picking one of these teams to win all the tiebreakers is more than we can do, so we’ll stick with Baltimore getting the last spot for now.

Opening Week

NFC

#3 Dallas vs. #6 Philadelphia

                                                                                                  Ma

Many people, including me, thought the Tennessee Titan’s season was over after a shocking and unpredictable 0-6 start. After 3 close losses to the Steelers, Texans, and Jets followed by 3 blowout losses to the Jaguars, Colts, and Patriots the reeling Titans went into their week 7 bye surrounded by questions and searching for answers. The solution was simply Vince Young. Yes, the same Vince Young who last year had questions swirling about his desire and his mental health, but also the same Vince Young that is a proven winner as a starter in the NFL (23-11 career record as a starter). Young has the Titans on a 5 game winning streak and is poised to make it 6 when the Titans face the Colts in week 12 (which I think is a reasonable possibility). During the 5 game winning streak Young has thrown for 4 touchdowns and ran for another while only accounting for 3 turnovers, but he has received some help from the defense and especially from MVP candidate Chris Johnson (more about Johnson soon). Young’s brightest moment in his NFL career was his game winning 99 yard drive against the Cardinals last week. Young marched down the field, spraying the ball around to many receivers and finally capped off the drive with a touchdown pass to Kenny Britt on fourth down and no time remaining on the clock. Young and the Titans look to ride their new found momentum into next week’s showdown against the Colts.

I think the Titans have a legitimate chance at another 10 game win streak (remember they had one last year). Their last 5 games consist of 3 teams that currently have losing records and a Colts team that has looked human of late and a Chargers team that is the best example of Jekyll and Hyde. Call me crazy, but come this postseason the Titans will be lurking.

Now, my case for who I think should be MVP, Chris Johnson. Other than the obvious things like CJ’s combination of speed and power and his great blocking ability for a guy his size, very few if anyone in the NFL means more to their team than Chris Johnson. He does it all. Here are the stats to support my argument:

1396 rushing yards (1st in the NFL)

294 receiving yards (4th among running backs in the AFC)

9 rushing touchdowns (2nd among running backs in the AFC)

10 total touchdowns (3rd among running backs in the AFC)

The stats speak for themselves.

By Bobby Holt

Peyton Manning still refuses to lose, no matter how bad his defense is. Despite his 2 ints, he still put together a solid day.

I have finally found a quarterback who is better at throwing to the other team then Mark Sanchez, his name? Jake Delhomme. Even Kerry Rhodes joined in the fun picking off two, yeah, count it two interceptions on the day. First two of this year.

Stat of the week: Darelle Revis and Kerry Rhodes both caught more passes from Jake Delhomme than Steve Smith did. You know, the guy on his team.

Steve Smith, who? (the good one). Revis blanketed him all day making him a non factor in the 17-6 loss to the Jets.

Washington almost won another game! Then decided to blow the lead and allow the Eagles to kick the game winning FG with under a minute to play.

The Falcons pulled off what looked like a sure fire loss when Matt Ryan and Michael Turner both left the game very early in the first. Chris Redmen, who was selling insurance last year, led the Falcons on the game winning drive with less than 2 minutes to play. After stumbling at the 5 yard line for three plays, Redmen threw a strike to Roddy White on 4th down with only 14 seconds left to play in the game.

This just in, Jason Elam still can’t kick a field goal.

Seattle did everything in their power to remind everyone they still play football. They beat a Bulger-less team and kept themselves in the playoff hunt.

Chad Henne did his best Chad Pennington impression by throwing pick after pick to help the Bills crush the ‘Fins 31-14.

LOL Oakland Raiders LOL.

Why does Detroit still get to play on Thanksgiving? The only thanks I gave was when the game ended.

The Bengals quietly beat a terrible Browns team and Larry Johnson rushed for over 100 yards. What was even more impressive was that Johnson didn’t make a racial slur before/during or after the game*.

****This has not been verified.

We have learned that the Giants can beat the teams they are supposed to, but can’t even beat the Broncos.

Stayed tuned for the late game wrap up.

Another bad week for my teams. It was already going to be a bad one as the Panthers and the Jets were playing each other. I was torn about who to pull for. Neither team is going anywhere but the end of the regular season. I’ve been a Jets fan for forty years and a Panthers fan for as long as they’ve been in existence.

It wasn’t a good day for Jake again. The last few games he’d played well with only one pick. This time around he had four, though the first can’t be laid at his feet. Who would expect the ball to bounce off the back of Steve Smith’s heel, when he doesn’t look around, and rebound at a ninety degree angle into a Jet defender’s hands, who then romps for a TD?

The Panthers saved one Jet score when a receiver tries to lunge into the end zone from the four, with a Panther defender hanging on him, only to fumble the ball with Carolina recovering in the end zone.

Still, final score: 17-6 Jets.

The ‘Skins held the lead most of the way against the Eagles and I had delusions that they might pull it out, only to let Philadelphia score late and make a two point conversion to tie it, then a field goal to win 27-24.

Ah well, this season is a lost cause for all three. I see changes coming in the off-season for both Carolina and Washington. Both coaches and quarterbacks. I feel, at best, Jake might remain as back-up. He’s getting a lot of bad press around here. And the shadow of Bill Cowher looms over John Fox’s shoulder. He lives in Raleigh and has a daughter in college.

The press says he might want the job. Of course, as any decent man would, he won’t say so while Fox is still the Panther’s coach.

The big one is tomorrow night. I’ll definitely pull for the Saints in that one. Never the Patriots.

There are quite a few NFL games I like this week. So let’s just get right to them: CIN vs CLE

There are quite a few NFL games I like this week. So let’s just get right to them:

CIN vs CLE; CIN -13, u-39.5

Nothing about Cleveland has changed my mind about them. Sure, they put up a bunch of points against Detroit (more than they had scored in the previous 5 games combined), but that was against the Lions. And look at how many points they gave up. Cincinnati needs this game as a pick-me-up after their embarrassing loss to the Raiders last week. I’m seeing 31-6.

TB vs ATL, ATL -12, o-46

I must warn you, I don’t know if I’d play this game. I’m including it since my GFS is calling it but I have a feeling it is skewed toward Atlanta due to earlier season trends when Atlanta was doing well and Tampa wasn’t. Both have flipped a U. Well I don’t know if you could call the Buccaneers a 180 turn because they’ve still only won 1, but the fact that the Falcons have only won 1 in their last 5 gives me cause for concern. I still think Atlanta will pull it off but maybe not by 12. 28-21, at most 31-21.

CAR vs NYJ; NYJ -3.5, 0-41.5

Here we have another example of two team on crossing paths. The Jets started how and have slowly cooled to a simmer, while the Panthers are just revving up now and they seem to have met right at 4-6 records. I think the Jets are the better team, though, and Rex Ryan has had enough of losing to mediocre teams. As long as the Jets can control their turnovers, they’ll win. I may buy 1 point on this game, though, as I could see it being won by a field goal to make it 34-31. Otherwise, I see 28-34.

SEA vs STL, SEA -4, u-42.5

As a dedicated Hawks fan, this makes me nervous. Seattle is just the kind of ball club to lose to the Rams right now. I think the Seahawks are a much better team but they have too many mental problems right now. I want to take this one so bad as Seattle has the potential of a huge slaughtering, but I could see it going the other way as well. The most likely case I see is this game is a mess with tons of turnovers but the Hawks win it 24-17.

WAS vs PHI, PHI -9, o-40.5

Yet another one I’m on the fence with, but in the end I have to go with the stronger team. The Eagles haven’t looked good in 3 weeks now, while the Redskins beat the Broncos by 10 two weeks ago and nearly shut out the Cowboys until a late game drive put Dallas on the board to win the game 7-6. We may not see the full return of the Eagles as Westbrook is still out, but I think Washington’s inability to capitalize on their defensive success last week foreshadows their inability find any success this week. Eagles win 31-17.

Those are all the games I’m going to give you this week. I’ll write up an in-depth report the Monday Night game later. Best of Luck!

Indy @ Houston – The Texans are 3 point underdogs in this game. I’m taking the points and Houston to pull off an upset.

Cleveland @ Cincinnati – The Bengals are 13 point favorites. That’s a lot to cover for an in state rivalry. As bad as the Browns are – I think they cover. Taking them with the points.

Chicago @ Minn – The Vikings are 10.5 point favorites in this game. I like them winning big. Taking Brett and giving the points.

Washington @ Philly – The Eagles are 9.5 point favorites in this game. I am actually going to be rooting for the Redskins this week so we get more separation in our division from Philly. I think the eagles win – but don’t cover. I’m taking the Skins with the points.

Miami @ Buffalo – The Dolphins are 3.5 point favorites. I like them to win this. Giving the points and taking the Dolphins.

Arizona @ Tennessee - The Titans are 2 point favorites in this game. I honestly think AZ looses their first game on the road this season and Vince Young keeps the run going. Taking the Titans with the points.

Seattle @ St. Louis – The Seahawks are 4 point favorites. I’m taking them and giving the points to beat the Rams.

Tampa Bay @ Atlanta – The Falcons are 12 point favorites. I like the Bucs in this. Josh Freeman will get better each week. Taking the points and the Bucs to cover.

Carolina @ New York Jets – The Jets are 3.5 point favorites in this game. I like the Panthers. Taking the points and panthers to win.

Jacksonville @ San Fran – The 49ers are 3 point favorites in this game. I could go either way in this game, but I’m giving the edge to Gurrard over Smith. Taking the points and the Jags to cover.

Kansas City @ San Diego - The Chargers are 14 point favorites in this game. I like them to win, but not by that much. I’m taking the Chiefs with the points.

Pittsburgh @ Baltimore – The Ravens are 7.5 point favorites in this game. With Big Ben out – I think the Ravens should win this. I think Tomlin however will find a way to keep it close. Taking Pittsburgh with the points.

New England @ New Orleans – The Saints are 2 point favorites in this game. They’ve been exposed too many times by bad teams (even though they found ways to win) to keep their streak alive. I think it ends tomorrow. Bill and Tom take care of the Saints and cover. Taking the Pats with the points.

Power Thursday (26/Nov/09)

Power Thursday

Most print publications have experts picking NFL games every week. Pegasus News, however, is different, in that we have near-flawless methodology in picking teams that will actually win. Our panel of perfect prognosticators — Todd Maternowski and Mike Bullock — will bring the pain each and every week.

Don't agree with these picks? Too bad, we can't hear you over the sound of our awesomeness.

As an added bonus, we have included three competing methodologies. The first is the return of “Mascot War,” in which we discuss which team’s actual moniker would win in a pitched battle to the death in the wild. Besides being easily the most controversial aspect of this feature, it will probably also be a constant source of embarrassment as our picks routinely show up.

The second and third methodologies are perhaps equally arcane and mysterious to the average NFL fan. There is the “Occult Pick,” in which our experts use the forbidden art of divination to predict each week’s winner; and “Fashion War,” in which Todd’s wife selects each victor based on the relative superiority of each team’s uniforms.

Most of these picks need no explanation: However, our panel has provided some commentary (footnotes and indexing to follow) for certain especially difficult-to-pick games.

Todd M: Panther versus Jet — This week’s pitched battle to the death pits two of America’s most notorious gangs against each other. On the one hand, the Panthers tried to avenge centuries of injustice with militant acts against the perceived racist institutions of their time. On the other hand, the Jets snapped their fingers and pranced around. Can the Panther’s weaponry overcome the Jet’s choreography? Unfortunately not this week: when you’re a Jet you’re a Jet all the way. Jet over Panther.

Week 11

1. Colts – they remain unbeaten and have had a tougher schedule than the Saints.
2. Saints – Big game this week in fact make it a huge game this week and I have to say I think they will go down to their first lose of the season.
3. Vikings – This team is not getting alot of attention which is surprising with Favre in it but they continue to win and win well.
4. Patriots – Pretty much sealed up the division this weekend and can now look forward to ruining the Saints perfect start to the season.
5. Bengals - They are praying the lose to the Raiders doesn’t hurt them too much.
6. Chargers - Looked good beating up the Broncos and should win the division now.
7. Cardinals – This team still seems to surprise people even after last season.
8. Cowboys – Warning signs are up since they struggled to beat the Redskins.
9. Packers - How could would this team be if they could protect Aaron Rodgers?
10. Giants - Got the win they needed after the bye week even though they tried their hardest to lose it.
11. Eagles – The Bears game was closer than it needed to be.
12. Steelers - Must stop losing so silly teams like the Chiefs.
13. Broncos – Simms was so bad he made Orton look like Elway.
14. Jaguars - Nearly losing to Buffalo shows how bad this team can be at times.
15. Falcons – Not surprised by the news they are seeking a new kicker.
16. Ravens - They need to win a game against a good team to be taken seriously.
17. Dolphins – Still winning even with all those injuries.
18. Texans - Things looked so good a few weeks ago but know they look like the .500 Texans we all love.
19. Titans – Being winless seems like a long long time ago now.
20. Panthers – Run the ball in the red zone please.
21. Bears - They are only this high because there are so any bad teams right now.
22. Jets - Looks like a team coached by a rookie head coach and with a rookie starting QB. Nice to see the disrespected us quote coming out this week.
23. 49ers - Smith looks ok at last.
24. Chiefs - Big win last week.
25. Raiders - Finally they have a QB who can throw the ball.
26. Bills - When do they move to Canada now?
27. Seahawks – Time to start worrying about next season.
28. Redskins – See above.
29. Lions - How do you lose so many yards and points to the Browns?
30. Rams - I still feel sorry for Steven Jackson.
31. Buccaneers - Man this team is bad.
32. Browns - and this team is even worse.

Some Festive Games and Some Turkeys We’ve arrived at Thanksgiving week, and the NFL season has becom

Some Festive Games and Some Turkeys

We’ve arrived at Thanksgiving week, and the NFL season has become one of haves, have-nots, and mediocre teams. The haves (New Orleans, Indianapolis, Minnesota, Cincinnati, San Diego, Arizona, and New England) figure to be the eight teams playing in the second round of the NFL playoffs.

The have-nots (Cleveland, Detroit, Tampa Bay, St. Louis, Washington, Kansas City, Oakland, Seattle, and Buffalo) have nothing to play for at this point. To wager on these teams, one must find a reason to believe these teams’ players will have a reason to give everything they’ve got.

The 15 mediocre teams remaining are the ones competing for the final four playoff berths. These are the teams that must be watched carefully as the stretch drive begins. Be careful playing against one of these teams when they are playing a have or have-not. They can be dangerous.

This week presents some interesting contests. On Thanksgiving night, the Denver-New York Giants game features two of the aforementioned mediocre teams. A match-up of two mediocre teams in essence becomes a playoff elimination game. The loser of this game has very little chance of recovering to make the playoffs this year.

Indianapolis plays at Houston, and the Texans find their backs up against the wall. After losing a close Monday night game, Houston is in a must-win position.

Arizona plays at Tennessee, and if the Titans win this one to get to 5-6, they would have to be considered a dark horse candidate to finish 9-7 and sneak in as the final AFC Playoff team. No NFL team has ever started a season at 0-6 and finished 8-8 must less 9-7. The 1970 Cincinnati Bengals began the season 1-6 and won seven games in a row to win the AFC Central Division at 8-6.

Baltimore and Pittsburgh face off in a blood and guts battle that could easily be a playoff elimination game.

The Monday night game is the best MNF game of the year. New England plays at New Orleans. It could easily be a preview of the Super Bowl.
