ELLE’s January cover girl on stress, sexuality, and her romantic future

On bodily reactions to stress: “I get all the symptoms of a pregnant woman. I get headaches, I get tired, I get blurred vision sometimes during a really intense session with [her creative team] the Haus.”

On a recurring theme in her work: “I feel that if I can show my demise artistically to the public, I can somehow cure my own legend. I can show you so you’re not looking for it. I’m dying for you on domestic television—here’s what it looks like, so no one has to wonder.”

On being a former waitress: “I was really good at it. I always got big tips. I always wore heels to work! I told everybody stories, and for customers on dates, I kept it romantic. It’s kind of like performing.”

On using her sexuality: “My album covers are not sexual at all, which was an issue at my record label. I fought for months, and I cried at meetings. They didn’t think the photos were commercial enough…The last thing a young woman needs is another picture of a sexy pop star writhing in sand, covered in grease, touching herself.”

On her romantic future: “In eight to 10 years, I want to have babies for my Dad to hold, grandkids. And I want to have a husband who loves and supports me, just the way anyone else does. I would never leave my career for a man right now, and I would never follow a man around.”

Pop’s It Girl has nothing to hide and in leotards, nowhere to hide it

Though born as Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, you know her as pop’s avant-garde It Girl Lady Gaga, whose debut record, The Fame, is still blasting out of car windows and underground clubs after being released last year. Here, the leotard-loving 23-year-old talks fashion, her next album, and why she has nothing to hide.

ELLE: You dropped out of NYU at 19. Why didn’t you want to finish?

Lady Gaga: I loved NYU, but I thought I could teach myself about art better than the school could. I really felt New York was my teacher and that I needed to bite the bullet and go it alone. I wasn’t interested in going to frat parties and doing those sorts of collegiate things. I was really interested in the music scene and waitressing and cleaning toilets, or whatever the fuck it was I was doing.

ELLE: What experiences did you draw from to create The Fame?

LG: I write about what I know: sex, pornography, art, fame obsession, drugs, and alcohol. I mean, why would anyone care to listen to me if I wasn’t an expert in what I write about? And the album itself is the story of me and my friends, and, again, our lives in New York—and you either want to know about it and be a part of it or you don’t. I am completely 100 percent honest in what I do and who I am, and I’ve got nothing to hide.

ELLE: What can we can expect from your next album?

LG: Well, let’s just say that right now I’m quite obsessed with 1950s sci-fi monster movies.…

ELLE: Good tease. Obviously, fashion plays a huge part in your live performance. How do you approach it in regard to your music?

LG: I think they’re in tandem. Music and visual performance have to influence each other. Designers and musicians have to be the nexus of all things pop culture, so I think about designers when I’m making music.

ELLE: If you had to perform in one outfit for the rest of your career, what would it be?

LG: Oh! Curse you! I wouldn’t want to hurt all of my other outfits’ feelings. It would probably be a black catsuit. Even though that’s very difficult to dance in. Or maybe my Hussein Chalayan bubble dress. That’s even more difficult to dance in.

In stores this October 1, the highly anticipated collaboration between fashion designer Jil Sander and Japan’s Uniqlo.

Japanese men’s fashion magazine Men’s Non-No (Yes, that’s really the name–which immediately made me think of DListed’s Michael K and his propensity to use the word no-no hole) got hold of Jill Sander’s collaboration line with Uniqlo well before the release date and, hands down, the clothes are phenomenal.

Understated, minimalist, timeless, chic: all describe the +J label, which I now cannot wait to scoop up as soon as it hits stores (date still unknown). More images below. [via Hypebeast]

The collaboration between Jill Sander and Uniqlo that’s already much-anticipated has finally been given a name.  Wait for it: +J.  Yes, it’s simple, clean and absolutely emanates “cooler than thou” minimalism that was the hallmark of the Jill Sander brand.  While no date has yet been announced for when the collection will be hitting Uniqlo stores, Sander will be creating “about 40 pieces for men and 100 for women, including coats, jackets, knitwear, T-shirts and accessories,” according to WWD.
