About the Book: The Love Dare challenged individuals to love their spouse more. Quiet Conversations

About the Book:

The Love Dare challenged individuals to love their spouse more. Quiet Conversations for Couples shows wives and husbands how to grow that love together. Introduced with Scripture verses and engaging stories, these 52 devotionals will inspire couples to draw closer through faith conversations–those quiet talks so vital for emotional and spiritual intimacy in a marriage. Guided, practical action steps round out each reading.

About the Authors:
They have the privilege to speak to couples each year through conferences on “Creating an Intimate Marriage” and Growing Together Spiritually.” Cathy is also a teacher at a Christian school for kids with learning disabilities.

My Review of the book:

This was a relaxing book to read… for review purposes! If Ann and I were going to work through it, over the course of a year (which we just might this upcoming year), it would be refreshing, fun, challenging, hard work and potentially transforming. Each chapter is anywhere from two to four pages long. The reading portion is followed by a section of questions (Faith Conversations) to get you and your spouse talking about what you’ve just read together. Next is “A Step Closer” – the action steps you’ll take individually or together in order to put what you’ve read and talked about into practice. All in all, this is a very practical book.

Devotional topics include:

     • creating connection

     • high-maintenance marriage

     • the happiness effect

     • no regrets

The Burns suggest that 30 minutes a week would accomplish more than most couples are doing currently, so why not jump right in and give it a go.

A chapter entitled, “Servant Love or Selfish Love” has some great discussion starters; e.g., “Are there situations right now that make it difficult for you to respect me?” “Are there times when it is difficult to love me?” The personal anecdotes are helpful. Insights gleaned from working and helping other couples prove to be a great encouragement.

Whether your marriage is rock solid or on shaky ground even at this moment, I think this is a tool you could use and greatly benefit from. Very practical, very specific.

Just listened to Youth Specialties weekly podcast (http://youthspecialties.com/freeresources/podcast

Just listened to Youth Specialties weekly podcast (http://youthspecialties.com/freeresources/podcasts), which featured Seth Barnes (checkout his blog: http://www.sethbarnes.com/) talking about discipleship. Barnes first talked about his passion for discipling his own kids, which is huge. Jim Burns’ (http://www.homeword.com/AboutUs/JimBurns.aspx) main point in Partnering with Parents is that parents are the most effective disciplers of their own kids and that youth leaders need to equip parents to disciple and purposefully influence their kids for Jesus.

Barnes lays out five, which I’m condensing to four, “secrets” to discipleship that he derived from his study of Jesus’ methodology in Luke.

Jesus goes with the goers – instead of trying to reach as many young people as possible, Barnes is promoting the idea of investing in a few, perhaps twelve like Jesus.

Model greatness – we have to live out our faith before our young people through service, missions trips, prayer, personal spiritual discipline, so that they can see what authentically following Jesus looks like.

Next Barnes talks about how we need to create the paradox of security and risk. On the one hand we need to create a safe place for our young people to seek after Jesus and open up their hearts to Him, youth leaders, and peers. So a safe place for soul work, but also provide an environment for young people to take risks and face danger. Barnes talks about how missions trips can help put people in these types of situations.

Invest deep and long (this is the one I’m condensing) – spend time with young people and give them opportunities to talk about the deep issues of their hearts: pain, dreams, and desires. Also be prepared to go the distance with them – stay in touch with them after college, and connect them with resources, tools, and other ministries that can reach them in ways that we don’t have the time, resources, or ability to.

My next blog post will discuss how I’m seeing these four secrets play out in the lives of five senior high guys that God’s given me the privilege of investing in.

There is a fresh wind blowing in the church in the world of family ministry! This book is foundational and practical at the same time. These authors recognize that family ministry is not a program but a mindset that must be worked into every part of the church and home. I haven’t read a better book to help us follow the biblical mandate to help families succeed. It’s well researched and well-written. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to get their arms around family ministry.

We just got back from our high school ski retreat in Boone, NC. We had a blast skiing all day on Sa

We just got back from our high school ski retreat in Boone, NC. We had a blast skiing all day on Saturday (even though it rained the whole time). Our Bible study for the weekend was Jim Burns study The Purity Code.

Every student needs to be taught about the importance of purity in their lives. Some even need to be taught this multiple times throughout the year. I chose to use The Purity Code for a couple of reasons:

1) It was FREE! I know that is a lame reason, but with the current financial crisis in our nation who can’t use some free things.

2) It was not JUST about abstinence from sex. This was a study on a whole lifestyle of purity. Including the body, the mind, the eyes, and the heart.

Our students loved the Bible study, and discussion that we had as we talked about the importance of purity within their lives. The main idea that we were trying to dive home with our students was that “the Purity Code starts with loving and honoring God.” If we want to live lives that show our love and honor to God then we should desire to live a pure life before Him including: our bodies, our minds, our eyes, and our hearts.

I would recommend this Bible study to anyone looking to talk to their students about the importance of purity. The Bible studies give you a lot of creative ways to begin talking about the subject, and a lot of flexibility when it comes to teaching the lessons. We will be using this study again next month at our middle school beach retreat.

Last year Jim Burns and I read together in a small room – by day a café – in Beeston, close to the University of Nottingham and just off the inner ring road of the city. The event had been organised by John Lucas [poet, publisher, jazz trumpeter, cricketer and, oh yes, academic]. John’s Shoestring Press brought out a nice fat collection of Jim’s poems, Laying Something Down: Poems 1962-2007, and that was one of our reasons for being there. One of Jim’s poems from the book is on this blog, a Love Story for Valentine’s Day: Jim Sallis, Sarah Vaughan, cats – it’s no wonder we feel an affinity for one another’s work.

Jim’s is the kind of poetry it can be easy to overlook, to think, sometimes, is it poetry at all? Just an ordinary bloke talking in an ordinary way about his and other lives. I’ll let Matt Simpson answer that, from his review of the book in Stride magazine.

“For nearly fifty years he has consistently offered something quite different from the ‘literary’ … what this is is the view, demonstrated in every line, that poetry is first and foremost a matter of how the world is perceived, a heart-and-mind openness to experience expressible in straightforward honest-to-goodness language, the language most people use every day. What makes it poetry is the arrangement of the words and the laconic twist that often comes at the end jolting you into a sudden realisation, into a different understanding.”

There are poems about Paris, poems about jazz, poems about working class lives, poems about love. They are, I imagine, like Jim, desperately unfashionable and happily so.

You can find Matt Simpsons’ review at: http://www.stridemagazine.co.uk/Stride%20mag%202007/Aug%20207/simpsonburns.htm

I recently finished a book titled “Uncommon Youth Ministry” by veteran youth worker Jim Burns.

In case it isn’t clear by the title, the book is about youth ministry. The book is about how a youth pastor can, by design, have a ministry that is uncommon – or different from the norm. Jim says he feels like the majority of American youth ministries are failing. He believes they are simply “getting by” and not really doing what Jesus has called them to do. So… his book is about how to structure a youth ministry that is uncommon.

I would agree with Jim on this. In general, I think the American church over the last decade has lost sight of what youth ministry is about.

With that being said however, in all honesty, this book is only ok.

I think I could safely say that if you’ve ever read any other book on youth ministry (especially one’s by Mark Yaconelli or Doug Fields) then you probably already know everything in this book. It’s a great reminder but its nothing new.

But then again, that’s the trend with youth ministry books. They all say the same thing: they all see the same problem with the way ministry is done, they all offer the same solutions, but yet… they all still believe no one is doing any better.

It doesn’t make any sense to me why youth pastors all over keep giving the same advice to the same problems. Perhaps, just perhaps, the advice isn’t working? Perhaps there are other things we need to think about and say.

Now, I know I don’t know everything. I’m not that smart. I’m not that experienced. But here’s my challenge: As youth pastors, if we want youth ministry to change, we have to be willing to have new ideas, new insight, and new strategies to be more effective. It doesn’t do any good to keep repeating the same things over and over again

“Creating an Intimate Marriage” Rekindle Romance Through Affection, Warmth & Encouragement By Ji

“Creating an Intimate Marriage”
Rekindle Romance
Through Affection, Warmth & Encouragement
By Jim Burns, Host of HomeWord Radio Broadcast
By Bethany House Publishers

“There is no doubt in my mind that this book will disturb you, inspire you, give you some great ideas, and also help you realize (as if you didn’t already know this) that to bring more connection, intimacy, and spirituality to your marriage it will take a great deal of focus.” Page 11

Jim Burns’s host of HomeWord radio broadcast, uses his own marriage of 30 plus years, in his attempt to show us how to have a more intimate marriage. If you’ve longed for a more intimate marriage but struggled with the know-how, and implementation process this book is for you and your spouse. The author shows step by step the differences through Affection, Warmth and Encouragement (A.W.E.) method has made in his own marriage. If you are anything like me, when you are presented with the knowledge of what needs to happen there is often a gap in between actually implementing the changes. Not with this book, the author has Questions for me, Questions for us and a final set of questions called Heart-to-Heart HomeWork. These questions will spur even the greatest procrastinators into action. They get you asking, answering and sharing with your spouse. They also show ways of implementing the steps that need to be changed to have more A.W.E. in your marriage.

Mr. Burns has the reader concentrate on change. But wait, I know what you are thinking, “Yes, my spouse needs to change; I wish they would do this, or they need to stop doing that.” The author takes the reader and helps them realize that no change can take place unless, you, the reader is willing to make the necessary evaluations and changes first. Not our significant other. The author’s goal is to help the reader take a serious look at their own life, behavior within the marriage and than evaluate the necessary changes they can make first in the marriage. All the while using the A.W.E. method.

Jim Burns is the founder of HomeWord Radio Broadcast. He is a highly respected in youth ministry and family issues. He is the author of several books including “Addicted to God, Surviving Adolescence.” He also writes the popular “What’s Up With My Life?” column for Ignite Your Faith magazine. Jim graduated Magna Cum Laude from Azusa Pacific University, earned a Master of Arts in Christian Education from Princeton Theological Seminary and his Ph.D. in Religious Education from Greenwich School of Theology.

This book is written from the self-help marriage perspective. Based on similar books that I have read on this subject I would give this book a 5 on a scale of one to five, with five being the highest. It helps the reader take self-help to the next level by actually getting both spouses involved in the process all the while having them focus on personal change. With the A.W.E. method you will find affection, warmth and encouragement returning right away to the marriage relationship.

I’ve been a close follower of Dave Stein’s blog for a while now. In fact, one of his posts mentioned Avitage and Private Sales Coach and because of this, we’re in deep negotiations with Jim Burns to bring his products into the APAC market.

If you want to understand the power of Social Media then have a look at this post from Dave’s blog. Whilst its disappointing that these thought leaders are being ripped off and are having to invest so much time chasing this – losing productive time, it’s a very powerful example of how Social Media works. If you follow the links and have a look at how this has developed, you’ll realise that many many people are affected .

Dave also makes a really good suggestion about Google Alerts. We have on average around 13 alerts going at any one time. We follow companies we’re interested in, technologies we believe in or promote, along with our partners and competitors. Like Dave, we strongly recommend you use this free service from Google.

Another tool you should be using is the Google Toolbar. When installed, it allows you to select any text on a web page, right-click and either drop this text straight into Google Notepad or send directly to Gmail. I use the send to email option as it includes the URL you were on at the time. So basically I can collect snippets of data including the URL and store this in a Gmail account for future reference.

Over the last couple of weeks one of the things that has really caught my attention is how people really have lost the ability to PLAY! I don’t mean the act of putting on a PLAY or the way we PLAY sports. But the function of just playing games and having fun! You know PLAY! When you were younger going across the street to get one of the guys on the street, you didn’t go and ask if you can schedule a time where you can sit down and engage in conversation while enjoying the graphics of the X-Box. You walked across the street you knocked on the door, rang the doorbell, whatever and you said, “Hey can you guys come out and play?”. What has happened to “Let’s play”?

All this thought caused me to go back to the book: “The 10 Building Blocks for a Happy Family” by Jim Burns. One of the building blocks that he talks about is “Play is necessary for a close knit family”. In fact one of the very first statements that he writes in this chapter is “This may sound like an oversimplification, but the family or marriage that isn’t working is a family or marriage that isn’t playing together. Playing, using humor, having fun and building life long traditions are essential traits of happy, healthy families.”

So I want us to really think about a time where we just played? I want you to know think about the fun that you had, the way that it made you felt when you were done, and what it is doing to you know as you think about it. My prayer is that you have those memories and that they are memories of not to long ago. My prayer is that you are having fun in your homes. That you are having fun with your spouses. That you are playing!

I have to say that for me this is a great enjoyment that I have in my own home and my own life. This last weekend is a great example my high school son and I stayed up late, OK we stayed up until early morning. We watched movies, we threw the coach pillows at each other, we wrestled (which is getting much harder then it used to be), and then we crashed. We started laughing so hard at one point in time I thought that he was going to throw up the popcorn that we scarfed down. Sunday night while we are on the family walk we both shared how much we enjoyed that.

I have had the privilege of tackling my wife and holding her arms down and tickling her, she has a great laugh. I chased my oldest daughter around the house while giving her charlie horses, I have a daughter that loves to have her dad play the alligator and grab her off the couch. I have even taken my kids out of school just so that we could stay home, hang out, and watch movies. In the Bloyer house we call these things “Planned Spontaneous”, you always don’t have to live life scheduled. You don’t have to run around with your head cut off either. Plan some spontaneous fun!

Husbands plan some fun for your wife. Dads plan some fun for your kids (not things that you want to do) things that they like to do. Let’s learn to play again and not take life so serious that we miss out, on each other?

So the question for the day is are you having any fun? Once you have answered that then go ask your spouse or kids “Do you want to PLAY?”

P.S. If you don’t believe me about the family having fun, check out my kids video. They lip sing “Mama Mia”.

Coaching is one of the most critical components of a total approach to sales effectiveness, but it is often underutilized and mismanaged.

I’ve been enjoying my conversations with Jim Burns, CEO of Boston-based Avitage. Avitage is a small technology company that provides communication mechanisms and techniques for, among other things, delivering sales and marketing messages. In fact, Jim pointed me toward several Avitage-developed vignettes that very effectively describe PrivateSalesCoach, the new tool his company has built.

Uh oh. I have no idea where we are with each person on our target influencer and decision maker list."

PrivateSalesCoach is a tool sales leaders of certain companies need to consider. The web-based software tool works on principles that are common to coaching with most sales methodologies.

During my first call with Jim, I was skeptical. I didn’t think that a packaged software application could provide an adequate coaching solution. Jim talked me through it, and then I test drove the product. (ESR will be interested in speaking with some companies that are using PrivateSalesCoach down the road. At that point, we will formally review this product.)

What’s the “private” part of this? Sales people can respond privately (and we expect truthfully) to the “flight check” questionnaire without worrying about what their boss is going to say or do. The managers don’t get to see the details of each salesperson’s virtual coaching session, but rather the aggregate strengths, weaknesses, and tendencies of the group. That way they can focus additional training or face-to-face coaching in the areas where reinforcement is needed.

I don’t see PrivateSalesCoach replacing live coaching. Nor will it work in every situation—I would expect that integration with a CRM system would being a requirement for some companies. With that in mind, it can provide salespeople and their managers with an effective, complementary coaching function, aligning the rep and manager, once and for all, toward a common goal—that’s winning business.

This morning I received the latest additions to my “Beat Scene Press Pocket Edition Chap Books

This morning I received the latest additions to my “Beat Scene Press Pocket Edition Chap Books” So far in the collection there are 17 in total with more to come I’m sure. I still have to get number 5 but with some luck I will have one in hand at some point in time. Their appeal to me is that they are a neat and tidy publication and an easy, quick read. I also think a few of them could be an easy introduction to reading some of the Beat authors, for those who are not too familiar with the poetry or writing style. Most of them are signed by the respective authors and all of them are either numbered or lettered.

Kevin Ring of Beat Scene magazine is the man behind the chap books, and before posting this I asked him if he had any comment about the chaps he told me that “they are just a tiny way on my part of keeping the Beats alive” You can find Kevin’s website at http://www.beatscene.net/

Pocket Edition No 1 is called I’m Bukowski, And Then? It’s about 3 Italian friends, Enrico Francheschini (The Author) and his two friends Gionata and Piero, who travel to California in 1979 to try and meet their hero Charles Bukowski. They found his house and spent a little time in the company of their Hero.

Pocket Edition No 2 is called Downstream From Trout Fishing In America (A Brief Extract). A Memoir of Richard Brautigan. By Keith Abbott. Brautigan’s second published novel Trout Fishing In America was written in 1961 but not published until 1967. This piece by Keith Abbott recalls the early days of his friendship with Brautigan. kevin Ring also wrote about the death of Richard Brautigan in Pocket Edition No 7.

Pocket Edition No 3 is called Marble Man by Dan Fante. A really funny story with a first person account from Fante’s alter-ego Di Salvo, who is commissioned by his boss Milt to accompany his wife Irene to view an apartment available for sub-let. Di Salvo gets an unwanted history of marble and it’s uses in the bathroom. And an also unwanted shower demonstration from the well-hung occupant of the apartment.

Pocket Edition No 4 is called Jack Kerouac In San Francisco by Tom Clark. The title speaks for it’s self. Tom Clarke also wrote Jack Kerouac a biography.

Pocket Edition No 6 is called High Peak Hiakus An Interview With Gary Snyder by James Campbell. It give a small insight into Gary Snyder with a some information on the last page about his bio, works and awards. According to the Beat Scene web site this interview has only appeared in one newspaper some years back.

Pocket Edition No 7 is called The sad and Lonely Death of Richard Brautigan by Kevin Ring. A nice essay accounting the death of Brautigan, with some good anicdotes about him from the likes of Jan Kerouac (Jacks daughter) and Michael McClure. An early version of this essay first appeared in Beat Scene Magazine in 1998.

Pocket Edition No 8 is called A Fierce God And A Fierce War an Interview with Michael McClure By Rod Phillips. A great and interesting read with a nice surprise at the end, the 1965 anti war poem Poisoned Wheat.

Pocket Edition No 9 is called Jack Kerouac At 681 Lexington Avenue by Elizabeth Von Vogt. She shares some nice, fond memories of Jack Kerouac. One of my favorites.

Pocket Edition No 10 is called Arizona Highway and Other Poems by Dan Fante. More of Dan Fante’s great work in the form of poems.

Pocket Edition No 11 is called Mutate or Die-With Burroughs in kansas by David Ohle. David Ohle knew William S Burroughs for the last 10 years of his life, he kept a log of the time they spent together, this chap book contains some of the entries of them times.

Pocket Edition No 12 is called Rexroth, Bukowski and the Politics Of Literature by Ben Pleasants. To me it what it says it is, the politics of literature with some interesting comments and takes on the subject.

Pocket Edition No 13 is called Scenes form East Hill Farm, Seasons with Allen Ginsberg by Gordon Ball. This one is excerpts from Gordon Ball’s “book length manuscript, East Hill Farm, Seasons with Allen Ginsberg” A really enjoyable read, leaving me wanting to read the rest of the manuscript.

Pocket Edition No 14 is called Neal and Anne At Gough Street by Charles Plymell. This covers some of the time that Charles Plymell spent sharing a “Pad” with Neal and Anne. Plymell may not be as widely known as some of the other beat writers, but always had an iron in the fire and can stand next to any of the others when it comes to writing.

Pocket Edition No 15 is called Charles Bukowski Letters to Beat Scene by Kevin Ring. In here are some letters that Bukowski sent to Kevin Ring, giving some insight into what the man was really like. It’s always hard to know what someone is really like until you read their letters. Apart form anything else this one is a great read.

Pocket Edition No 16 is called Remembering Jack Kerouac by John Clellon Holmes. I was always of the opinion that Holmes had a interesting and funny take on Jack kerouac, well worth a read from someone who knew Kerouac well.

Pocket Edition No 17 is called Cool Kerouac by Jim Burns. This touches on the influence Jazz had on the writings of Kerouac. Where most Kerouac fans will immediatly connect both Jazz and kerouac, some wouldn’t. So this is an ideal starting point for those who want to explore the subject, and a nice read for those who do connect both. Jim Burns is the author of many books of essays and poetry, and is also the assistant editor of Beat Scene magazine.
