Without the use of a camera Portland-based artist Jim Kazanjian sifts through a library of some 25,000 images from which he carefully selects the perfect elements to digitally assemble mysterious buildings born from the mind of an architect gone mad. While the architectural and organic pieces seem wildly random and out of place, Kazanjian brings just enough cohesion to each structure to suggest a fictional purpose or story that begs to be told.

The above photo looks like a photo of a weird  flooded lighthouse under construction.

It is one of the very creative works by Jim Kazanjian  using a technique called photomontage.

Lots of different photos were used to create the above photo.

Wikipedia wrote that, photomontage is the process and the result of making a composite photograph by cutting and joining two or more photographs into an illusion of an unreal subject.”

I think that Jim Kazanjian’s works are great.

My technique could be considered “hyper-collage”. I cobble together pieces from photographs found online and feed them into Photoshop. Through a palimpsest-like layering process of adding and subtracting, I eventually merge these various parts together. I am basically manipulating and assembling a disparate array of multiple photographs to produce a single homogenized image. Right now, I am using around 50 photos to create one of my pieces.

What is it?

First introduced to us via a Coolboom newsletter, they are collages assembled from found photographs by American artist, Jim Kazanjian, creating mesmerising black and white worlds from pieces of the everyday.

What do we think?

Kazanjian favours deserts, cemetaries, marshland and earthquake-damaged freeways as the settings for his work. Combined with crumbling houses, abandoned shrines and ramshackle cities, his imagery evokes eerie sentiments of placelessness and decay. Yet the compositions are so powefully bizarre that it is impossible to miss the beauty of a shack rising from a rubbish heap or an Adams Family-type mansion falling into a gaping hole in the ground.

Through his skill in front of a computer screen, Kazanjian is able to submerge his interventions beneath entirely convincing compositions. No matter how hard we look, the seams between his objects remain hidden and we are left simply to ponder: what is this place and how has it come to be?

Obsessed as Kazanjian seems to be with ruins, monstrosities, haunted houses, and mysterious fortifications, his work has a dream-like beauty to it. In one photo, the types of homes you might see in a glossy magazine are sliced, stacked, and placed on shaky stilts, balanced over a narrow gorge as dark smoke billows in the distance. In another, a strange, worm-like blob engulfs a shoddy house in a barren field overgrown with weeds. Take a tour of Kazanjian’s post-apocalyptic wonderland after the jump.
