“Stroker Ace” is a 1980′s ode to fried chicken, topless dudes and the ultra smooth taste of Winston cigarettes.

[Reason #1 for Burt Reynolds month: Burt Reynolds supposedly turned down a role in "Terms of Endearment"(one that Jack Nicholson won an OSCAR for) to play Stroker Ace.]

Stroker Ace(Burt Reynolds) is the bad boy of the NASCAR circuit. He says and does whatever he wants and wins with almost as much ease, when he has a car that can keep up with him. The only problem is his abrasiveness keeps sponsors away. Stroker’s pit chief Lugs(Jim Nabors) does what he can to hold things together, but it just isn’t working anymore.

Stroker has no choice but to sign with Clyde Torkle(Ned Beatty) the owner of The Chicken Pit chain of fried chicken restaurants. Mostly through being an idiot, he signs the enormous contract without reading it. Hilarity supposedly ensues when Stroker realizes there were unexpected clauses. He’s forced to do ribbon cutting ceremonies and other brilliantly funny things like wear a chicken suit. Ha. Ha. Classic comedy.

Burt Reynolds is playing his “I’m Burt F’N Reynolds” character that developed after he discovered he could make movies where he plays himself and people will still see them because he’s Burt F’N Reynolds. If you’re down with Burt being Burt, then you’ll be fine with his performance here. Jim Nabors reprises his role as “the guy who’s never been laid” and sings to cement his status as “that guy who people think are really goofy but has a nice singin’ voice.”(Ok… no more “made up names for things” in this review…)

“Stroker Ace” is really weird when it comes down to it. Most of the attempts at comedy aren’t successful, but there’s plenty of unintentional comedy and WTF moments. Including seeing how many men in the 1970s/80s didn’t wear shirts and a scene where I’m 95% sure Burt Reynolds rapes the female lead. It does, however, have it’s own theme song written by Charlie Daniels.[Legit Note: Theme songs for crappy movies need to make a come back] Also, keep an eye out for cameos from confederate flags and the “Mistress of the Dark”(I didn’t make that one up) Elvira.

“Stroker Ace” isn’t a groundbreaking piece of cinema. Hell, it isn’t even a decent piece of cinema, but it is the perfect movie to put on for a lazy Saturday and Nap During.

I wish I could go back to 1972, listen to Gentlemans Pistols new record “At Her Majesties Pleasure”

I wish I could go back to 1972, listen to Gentlemans Pistols new record “At Her Majesties Pleasure” in the era it was meant to be recorded and stab Richard Nixon’s Chief of Staff H.R. “Bob” Haldeman in the skull with an ice pick. Okay, maybe not the last part. Haldeman wasn’t such a bad guy. He rocked that weird flat top hairdo that became the style in mid-90s rap music and became the best chemist Lompoc Federal Prison ever saw. He would have dug the new Gentlemans Pistols record for it’s pure grit and bile-ridden effluence. He was as malevolent a man as ever walked the earth. Supposedly, he tried to have Jim Nabors killed because he wouldn’t play Julie Nixon’s wedding. I heard that once from a guy in a sauna in Davenport, Iowa.

Gentlemans Pistols is a collection of outstanding British musicians including Mr. William Steer, who gave my life meaning by writing riffs for Carcass that would have made Ed Gein recite Walt Whitman poems to a crowd of smiling 3rd graders. Steer hasn’t lost a step. The riffs that he and James Atkinson put on this album are pure roll around-in-the-gutter filth. They buckle your knees like a 3-2 curveball and do not ask for your permission to continue.

Backwards in time to another place. Transported to all that was seedy and repugnantly gorgeous about 70’s bar room rock’n’roll. You are in a pool hall swilling cheap, half-flat beer being stared down by two menacing looking Hell’s Angels. Not the modern Sons of Anarchy watching yuppies who go cycling between trading soybean futures, but the old school Sonny Barger led head-mangling, spleen eater types. “Midnight Crawler” bellows in the background and you are completely there. Everything is in its place.

At some point the whole retrofitted 1970s rock thing is going to get old. The formula is, in fact, criminally simple. However, put in the hands of poets like these a 3-minute-song can feel like a shimmering vacation into the dark heart of all that is ugly and cruel. Something in their tone screams for your undying allegiance. You would crawl through glass just to hear “Into The Haze” once more. They are on the mainline, hooked into the Universal Generator and driving ceaselessly into the storm. This is the purpose for which rock’n’roll was intended. Not to be background music in the local Target or to be recited soullessly by an army of never-ending American Idol contestants, but to remind us of what visceral chaos lives just below the surface of our pristine, orderly world.

One of the most successful pop and country songwriters of the ’60s and ’70s, [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Jim Weatherly[/lastfm] scored his lone Top 40 hit in 1974.

Jim Weatherly’s lone Top 40 hit was “The Need to Be,” self-penned and released by Buddah Records.

Weatherly was no stranger to songwriting success. The Mississippi-born athlete-turned-musician had toured with [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Jim Nabors [/lastfm]during his most popular years, had written over 50 tunes for country singer [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Ray Price [/lastfm]and had his songs covered by [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Brenda Lee[/lastfm], [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Bob Luman[/lastfm] and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Gladys Knight and the Pips[/lastfm].

It was the success of the Pips songs that won Weatherly a contract on their label, Buddah, his third in less than 10 years.

Though he won some country fans down the road, “The Need to Be” was his only Top 40 hit, spending 8 weeks on the chart starting in October ’74 and peaking at Number 11 in November.

The Heart Touching Magic of Jim Nabors. One of my favorite records in high school.

I found the record and thought it would be funny. Like a lot of people, I only knew Jim Nabors as Gomer Pyle. The sound coming off the record blew me away.

The lip syncing in the commercial is so precious. Jim Nabors can sure belt it out while relaxing on the couch.

I actually bought this record and The Exploited’s Jesus is Dead EP at the same time at a dark, loud, record store in Santa Cruz, which is no longer there. I thought I was so clever.

One of our favorite Memorial Day traditions is to watch Jim Nabors sing “Back Home again in Indiana” as part of the introduction of the Indy 500. Well, we have always loved Gomer Pyle, but once we heard the sweet, melodious intonations of his rich and classical baritone, we were, as they say, gone daddy gone!

Cookie likes to watch the race itself as she finds the hum of the droning engines soothing on her bulldog nerves. She was so relaxed this year, that during Sunday’s race she participated in her own timely event: “The Windy 500″ (toot)!

For those who remember the Character Gomer Pyle aka (Jim Nabors) in the offbeat situation comedy Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C, one of his favorite sayings was “Surprise, Surprise, Surprise“.

This weeks earnings fit the bill of Gomer’s favorite saying. Earnings have been terrific, almost across the board. As we read, listen, and dig into the many reports, we are stunned at the positive tone coming from management and even greater positives from their financial reports, which are more important most times!

We still have a long way to go, but we have had many very large company reports that have set the tone for a positive earnings season….Surprise, Surprise, Surprise !

Tomorrow the markets will be closed for Good Friday and we will be out of the office as well. We hope you enjoy the weekend and don’t worry, I will be off the Movie theme soon, I am almost out of favorites!!!

Have a Great Day!

THE WNF 30-DAY SONG CHALLENGE
DAY 3: FAVORITE SONG RECORDED BY AN ACTOR/ACTRESS

Mr. T and The Mothers

J.MIZ
Any time I catch Mr. T‘s “Treat Your Mother Right,” time stands still, my jaw goes slack, and I stop breathing due to its awesomeness.

INSCRUTABLE JEFFREY TROTTER
I’d like to nominate Marilyn Monroe‘s rendition of the birthday song for John F. Kennedy. JFK could pull some serious tail… That’s why I still say Jackie O had him killed.

J.MIZ
Anything by Juliette and The Licks! I got somethin’ she can lick! But seriously, she’s badass.

C.J. DODD
“Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Miley Cyrus on her Breakout album, Platinum Edition. Don’t fucking judge me.

J.MIZ
On the down low — I get “She’s Like the Wind” stuck in my head like two times a year. I’m never sure if that makes me wanna slit my wrists or don a tutu.

INSCRUTABLE JEFFREY TROTTER
Hmmm… that’s dangerously close to being a Patrick Swayze joke. The last thing we want to do is put people off of watching Dirty Dancing the next time it comes on Oxygen. Though, now that I think about it, Swayze probably wouldn’t mind being on oxygen right now.

J.MIZ
It’s a bit off, but the ’86 “Super Bowl Shuffle.” I have never seen so many awkward white men “attempting” a two step SOBER.

ANDREW HICKS
Don’t remember the names of the songs, but Jennifer Love Hewitt and Tatyana Ali both had music videos out around the same time that made me burn rubber in my pants.

J.MIZ
Oooooh! I know! That fucking shark song LL Cool J did for Deep Blue Sea! I never knew of its glorious existence till last year! Best.rap.about.sharks.ever!

ANDREW HICKS
Miz, you should save that one for Best End Credits Rap Describing The Plot Of The Movie You Just Saw. It’s a tough call for me to narrow down a pool that includes Ice Cube‘s “Friday,” Bobby Brown‘s “On Our Own,” Canibus‘ “Take This Job and Shove It” and Will Smith‘s “Wild Wild West.”

FREETHY
My favorite right now is “Common People” by William Shatner. Or “The Shat,” as I like to call him.

J.MIZ
We have to honorably note Nimoy‘s “Bilbo Baggins.” And all the musical stylings graced to us by the two Jims — Varney and Nabors.

WOO
Eddie Murphy, “Party All the Time.”

ANDREW HICKS
Oh shit! Does anyone remember when Eddie Murphy and Michael Jackson did a song together in 1993 called “Wazupwitu” that had a green-screen video with a bunch of kids dancing around? Almost as epic as Don Johnson‘s video for “Heartbeat,” minus all the car crashes. Oh by the way, Bruce Willis with harmonica = Worst In Show.

LINDSAY HARTLEY
FUCK MICHAEL JACKSON. FUCK HIM. Fuck him.

J.MIZ
No thx Linds.

LINDSAY HARTLEY
Good. I fucking hate that guy. BRB, pissing on his grave.

We also had a Jim Nabors Christmas album back in the old days, and I especially recalled his great rendition of Go Tell it on the Mountain. So, this season, it became another song that I downloaded from iTunes and added to by burgeoning Christmas playlist. Thanks to generosity of YouTube, I can share it with you.

It’s still hard to fathom that the singer, Jim Nabors, is the same person as the comedic, Gomer Pyle.

It’s a quiet Saturday night in the Bay Area. The Giants won their playoff game earlier this evening == a tense non-pitching duel between Tim Lincecum and Roy Halliday, and now there’s nothing to do but scan around for some decent TV, an oxymoron if there ever was one. I was flipping through the channels marvelling at how many Pac 10 football games there were when I stumbled upon The Music Man.

After watching for five minutes it became clear that this wasn’t my father’s Music Man – the one with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones. This was a remake with, of all people, Mathew Broderick in the Henry Hill role. I realize that Broderick was good on stage in The Producers, but he really doesn’t have the voice, or the dancing skills to carry an entire musical. Kristin Chenoweth had the Marian the librarian role and she fared much better. Have you ever noticed something about Chenowith….she is the smallest person with the biggest voice. — you wonder where it emerges from.

Do you remember Jim Nabors, the actor who played Gomer Pyle in the 1960s television show? He had this high-pitched southern drawl, kind of sing-songy, and a little whiney. Every once in a while he would guest on the Carson show, or sing the national anthem at a ball game. You’d be steeling yourself for Gomer’s twang when out would come this booming baritone. Remarkable.

Hollywood should leave these old musicals alone — we’re too cynical for them now. Too much CGI has dulled our senses. The theatre is a different story, though. I saw South Pacific at Lincoln Center two years ago and loved it. What a privilege to get to hear those Richard Rogers melodies sung with full orchestra and a beautiful production. Carousel, which I saw 14 years ago, was one of my great theatre experiences.

I’ll leave you with two more from my daughter, now that she’s sitting next to me watching Hannah Montana. Miley Cyrus has a much lower speaking voice than her singing voice. She’s the anti-Nabors! I am also informed that Justin Bieber has a high speaking voice and a high singing voice. We’ll put him in the Michael Jackson category.

In the heart of the Coosa River Valley sits the neighboring city of Sylacauga derived from the Native American name “Chal ak-ge” meaning “meeting place of the Chalaka tribe.” This “progressive community where all the pieces fit” was originally incorporated in 1838 with the name Syllacoga and then again in 1887 as present day Sylacauga. This city sits upon a solid deposit of the hardest, whitest marble in the world, naming it the “marble city of the south.” This Sylacauga marble has been used in many important buildings throughout the country including the United State Supreme Court, the Al Jolsin Shrine in California, and the Woolworth Building in Houston, Texas. Sylacauga is thought to date back for quite some time, originally being occupied by Creek Indians close to the Coosa River. These Native Americans were first recorded in 1540 by Hernando DeSoto and then later in 1759 the French noted the area called Chalakagay as inhabited by 50 Shawnee Indian warriors.

Childersburg is a town thought to allow one to take a “stroll through history.” It is the oldest continually occupied city in the United States dating back to at least 1540. This town goes back to being known as “Coosa Village” occupied by the Coosa Indian Nation and is still full of Indian lore and artifacts. It is the home of DeSoto Caverns which is the site of the oldest recorded cave in the state. The city has an annual birthday celebration in the Fall named “Coosa Fest.” The city is also thought to be “a sportsman’s paradise for fishing and hunting” due to its lakes and wildlife.

One of the newer cities of the county, Lincoln is known to Talladega countians as “a city that is moving fast.” The city was originally known as Kingsville and was incorporated in 1911. The name Lincoln came from the Revolutionary War General Benjamin Lincoln. The city website offers a wonderful explanation of the population for the city stating, “population of the city varies with when you ask, ask in the morning about 8:00 and the answer would be 12,000 as the Honda workers would be at work, ask on race day and the answer would be more like 250,000 and on most nights around 6,000 which is what we expect the next census to reflect.” This quote touches on the fact that Lincoln is the proud home to the Talladega Super Speedway that many NASCAR fans flock to twice a year.

A smaller area of the county, known as the town of Oak Grove became a nationally recognized town in 1954 as word spread of it being the first location of a meteor striking a human being. Mrs. Ann E. Hodges was lying on her sofa when she heard a crashing noise from her roof-top. Shortly afterwards some unknown object struck her hip. It was determined that this unknown object was a meteorite. The town is also the home of the “official state Christmas tree of 2004″ displayed in the governor’s mansion that same year. It was grown by the present day mayor, Bloise Zeigler in the middle of the two hills of the community at his cut-your-own-Christmas tree farm. The site of this farm is now known as “Comet Grove”, the first community garden in Oak Grove.

Gantt’s Quarry, now a ghost town, according to Wikipedia had a population of seven. There was of course a mayor. Also running the town was a five member city council leaving one resident as the town clerk.

Hangover. Betty Lamm called-interview with Jim Nabors at 2 o’clock-Desilu Cahuenga-Aaron Rubens office. Bath-letter from Colby-note from Jim with story for Frank Eydent. Still haven’t heard from Frank. Note from Adoree Durham. Very gay attractive tray from Eleanor Peters. Flowers from Mary (Oh God) with note saying she’d found the check + “thanks for everything.” Peter off to see Dr. Thomsen with Mother and Newcomb at 2. I had trouble finding a parking space-had to pak on Romain. Betty waited for me-Jim Nabors in shortly after. Gee-what a charming guy. Absolute joy + very funny. We went to his office (shared with Andy Griffith) Richard Linke, his personal manager + producer of the upcoming special was in + out. Jim remembered Newcomb from the Tulsa March of Dimes Telethon and he remembered Peter + was awfully enthusiastic about our wedding. I left feeling better than I have in weeks (or rather since the whole Mandeville affair began.) Had ice tea w/Betty after. Came home at 3:30. Read “Moon beams” by Vernon Beste-excellent book. Peter called to say he + Newcomb were going to see Allen again. Evidently Thomsen feels Allen should have custody of all six children. Poor Poor Mary. It’s so awful I feel physically ill. I spoke with her though this afternoon to thank her for the flowers + she sounded very wild. Talks with Dr. Lou Robbins in Long Island who says she “doesn’t have a problem in the world” etc. etc. She’d gone + joined the Center Club + is going to have a dinner party there on Sunday would Peter + I come? I feel so terrible knowing all the time it just isn’t going to happen. She sounded as though she’d been drinking too. I talked with Mother later + Mary had gotten a bottle + I thought there would be trouble but there wasn’t. Elizabeth called-thought she might have a house keeper. Leon Lance called for peter about 9:30 + I called Allen. Peter had just left + Allen sounded terrible “they’ve dumped it all back in my lap” he said. As it’s his 6 children he’s talking about that seems a bit much. I pretended there was someone here + I couldn’t talk. Peter in at 10:30-has appt. with Leon tomorrow. We talked about the situation when Peter said something about Mary’s face at the window on Halloween. I got to crying + couldn’t stop. We went over wedding pictures + weeded them out. Bed about 1 o’clock.
