Jesse “The Body” Ventura came thiiiiiiiiis close to beating the living crap out of comedian Jim Norton
on a live radio show early this morning — over a political conversation that went worse than the Gulf of Tonkin.

It all went down on the Opie and Anthony radio show, when Ventura — a former wrestling champ turned politician — arrived for an in-studio interview. Ventura was explaining why he doesn’t trust the U.S. government — when Norton, a regular on the radio show, began arguing with him.

After an intense back-and-forth, Ventura decided to leave and as he patted Norton on the shoulder on the way out — Norton said, “Thanks for touching me with your f*cking stupid riff-raff Rocky Horror hairdo.”

Ventura turned and stared Norton down — until Norton proclaimed, “You’re bigger than me and stronger than me … so what?! You want to beat me up? Go ahead.”

Ventura, who served in an elite Navy unit during the Vietnam years, kept his composure and eventually walked away.

“lil” Jimmy Norton showed he wasnt going to back down to tough talking Jesse Ventura… As an O&A fan, i heard the whole interview live on XM… Radio Gold ….

While I don’t agree with 99% of what the Fox News channel says I do LOVE the late night “news” program Red Eye. The host Greg Gutfeld is HYSTERICAL with witty delivery that Pizza Hut could take lessons from. I don’t know if he writes his own material and I don’t care. The shit is good. Every night he does a “Greg-alogue” that is reminiscent of an old Dennis Miller’s rant…they’re awesome. Regardless of what you think of the channel the show Red Eye is on, you MUST check it out at least once. Believe me there is something for every viewer on this show. Every night he shares the table with his gay sidekick Bill, “TV’s own” Andy Levy, hot smart chicks, politicians, rock stars, movie/TV stars, and comedians. One particular comedian I have developed a little “Red Eye crush” on, Jim Norton. Something about those squinty little eyes. Anyway, check it out if you are awake like me at midnight (CA time) or if you have TiVo (DT). You’ll be hooked.

One of these guys is a kinda-sorta obscure comedian on the Opie & Anthony radio show. The other is a former governor from a large and important American state. Guess who wins the argument?

Jesse “The Appendix” Ventura has an unpleasant chat with Jim Norton about nonsensical 9/11 conspiracy theories, then promptly beclowns himself. What an insufferable Truther cockface Ventura is. If I was a 9/11 trooooofer and I saw this, I’m pretty sure I’d find some other wack-job movement to latch onto rather than associate myself with Jesse’s particularly repellent combination of arrogance and stupidity.

Also-I guess true American patriots like Jesse Ventura can pull off a fanny-pack. Seriously. A fuckin’ fanny pack, for fuck’s sake. That’s completely retarded Trutherism and a horrible fashion sense all rolled into a sweaty juiced-up pile of fail. Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.

Based on the novel by John Boyne, THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS is a wrenching Holocaust story about a young German boy and his forbidden friendship with a Jewish child. Bruno (Asa Butterfield) is… Based on the novel by John Boyne, THE BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS is a wrenching Holocaust story about a young German boy and his forbidden friendship with a Jewish child. Bruno (Asa Butterfield) is living a charmed life in Berlin as the son of a high-ranking Nazi soldier, when his father (David Thewlis) is suddenly transferred to a job out in the country. Bruno, as well as his sister Gretel (Amber Beattie) and mother (Vera Farmiga) must all join him at his new post. Bruno is lonely and confused by his new surroundings, and he doesn’t understand why he can’t wander the grounds or play at a nearby farm. The “farm,” of course, is a concentration camp, though Bruno doesn’t know this. He soon sneaks away to explore, and meets Shmuel (Jack Scanlon) a prisoner of the camp. Shmuel is eight, the same age as Bruno, and the two form a timid, careful friendship, playing checkers and catch through the barbed wire fence. Bruno knows that his friendship with Shmuel is dangerous, but after witnessing brutal violence perpetrated against some very kind people, he has begun to question the Nazi doctrine of hate. He is no longer sure what to make of his soldier father, whom he once believed to be a hero. When he learns that Shmuel is in trouble, he vows to help him, and together the boys form an outrageous plan that culminates in the film’s devastating climax. Farmiga and Thewlis put in excellent performances, while Scanlon and Butterfield, are equally impressive, doing a fine job of carrying the weight of such a heavy film. The BOY IN THE STRIPED PAJAMAS is a deeply moving and–it must be said–disturbing movie. But it is a remarkable story, told with masterly intelligence and grace

Finian’s Rainbow opens tonight on Broadway

The Broadway revival of Finian’s Rainbow opens on Broadway tonight, October 29, 2009. Starring Jim Norton (The Seafarer) as Finian, Kate Baldwin (Wonderful Town) as Sharon, Cheyenne Jackson (Xanadu) as Woody, and Christopher Fitzgerald (Young Frankenstein) as Og, we’re looking to see how the public responds to the show.

For years it was thought to be an unrevivable show due to its racist content, but with a reworking of the book and songs like “Old Devil Moon,” “If This isn’t Love” and “How are Things in Glocca Morra?,” we think it more than deserves a another run on the Great White Way.

Going to see it? Interested in writing a review for the blog here? Contact me!

Promises, Promises to star Chenoweth and Hayes; opens March 25

Producers have announced that Promises, Promises will officially star Sean Hayes and Kristin Chenoweth. This will be the first ever revival of the musical, will open at the Broadway Theater on March 25.

With a book by Neil Simon, music by Burt Bacharah and lyrics by Hal David, the show will mark Hayes first appearance on Broadway and Chenoweth’s happy return. The original 1968 production played 1,268 performances on Broadway, was nominated for 8 Tony awards and awarded a Grammy.

Run DMC musical eyeing Broadway

Hollywood producer Paula Wagner is working with the rappers Joseph Simmons (Run) and Darryl McDaniels (DMC) and the estate of Jason Mizell (Jam Master Jay) about creating a stage musical about Run DMC’s road to fame.

No dates, casting or other collaborators have yet been announced.

Mary Murphy to make guest appearance in Burn the Floor

Mary Murphy from Fox’s “So You Think You Can Dance” will make a one-night-only guest star appearance in Broadway’s Burn the Floor on December 22, partnering with ballroom champion Vaidas Skimelis.

Katie Holmes may star in the stage musical version of Cocktail

Rumors are flying that Katie Holmes may be under consideration for a starring role in the Broadway musical version of the 80s movie, Cocktail, that is being penned for the stage by Heywood Gould – the original author and screenwriter. Producer Marty Richards is on board and though Gould said “it’s far too early to talk about casting,” he did mention he “like[s] Katie Holmes.”

Little Miss Sunshine musical workshop stars Bierko, Latessa and Rene Scott

The stage musical version of Little Miss Sunshine is workshopping with stars Craig Bierko (Guys and Dolls, The Music Man), Dick Latessa (Hairspray, Damn Yankees), and Sherie Rene Scott (The Little Mermaid, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Aida) in Florida right now.

The adaptation of the 2006 film features a score by William Finn with book and direction by James Lapine.

We can only hope it’s good-enough to take to Broadway with those names on board.

Judy and Sayle to star in the Broadway-aimed A Christmas Story, The Musical!

Later this month, another production eyeing Broadway, A Christmas Story, The Musical!, will open out-of-town. The cast features talent with many Broadway shows under their belts, including James Judy (The Scarlet Pimpernel), Zachary Carter Sayle (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang), John Bolton (Curtains, Spamalot) and Anne L. Nathan (Assassins, Sunday in the Park with George).

(Season 1, Episode 5)

Yesterday, Leno mocked “Cash for Clunkers” by mocking up a “Cash for Flunkers” video. Tonight he tapped the same well with a “Cash for Chunkers” joke. I guess that’s common in the late night arena, but I’ve never been a fan of using the same exact set-up on different nights to get a different joke. Unless you acknowledge how weak it is when you do it.

Tonight’s correspondent was The Hangover’s Rachael Harris, who came on to show us the lost art of bartering in this tough economic times. Like most of the other correspondent segments, it had some funny moments, but it just seemed to go on forever.

The crazy train has left the station…and either you were on it or you’ll have to wait un

The crazy train has left the station…and either you were on it or you’ll have to wait until next year’s local trip.

The Sunset Strip, long a place where spandex covered dinosaurs crawled between the Rainbow and the Whiskey has had a resurgence, mostly due to Roxy owner Nic Adler’s social media make over experiment. His crazy communist manifesto of community based music and entertainment has created an alliance with the Viper Room, the Andaz Hotel, The Comedy Store and a few other hot spots. Their online presence, from tweet crawls to ticket twofer giveaways, has lured hipsters back to the place where rock music once reigned. The fact that the Sunset Strip has gotten it’s own music festival, now in it’s second year, shows that the Strip’s death rattle has reversed course and the infamous piece of WeHo history begun a little rock renaissance. And this year’s renaissance faire got the go ahead to shut down the boulevard to honor the Prince of Darkness himself, Ozzy Osbourne.

The festival kicked off with a big tribute to Ozzy at the House of Blues, which funnily enough for a frenzy of social media mavens, seemed to be a twitter dead zone. The night was MC’ed by Billy Morrison who was most memorable for his cheekbones which could cut glass. There was a pre-taped congrats from Lemmy…uh, what, he couldn’t stumble from the Rainbow-only mere yards up the strip-to say it in person?

Brought up to roast/honor Ozzy were comedian Jim Norton, who showed a slide show of mainly photos of himself with famous people (yawn). Then followed a spirited anecdote from Henry Rollins about underestimating the roar of an Ozzy crowd. Next up was an unfathomable speech of nonsense from Tommy Lee about drinking his own urine (Ugh, Tommy). Nothing much interesting from Slash – just a tale of listening to Iron Man on acid. Slash, we really want you to lead us here. You are positioning yourself as a rock hero and guitar legend. Let’s work on the public speaking charisma, dude. If you’re going to wear the Monopoly top hat, then let’s act like the mayor of Guitarville, mkay?

And theeeeen what followed, what I was really curiously waiting for, a few quips from Billy Bob Thornton.

Now Billy Bob was an interesting choice for a few reasons…one: I was hoping he’d do the whole speech in his Sling Blade voice and then he and Ozzy could have an unintelligible-off. Two: Now being known as a ‘musician’, I am obsessed with him wanting to give any kind of speech after he completely melted down on a CBC radio show. If there was ever an awkward music interview, Billy Bob takes the cake. I have a sick, twisted desire to interview him and let the train derail and then sort through the wreckage. Oh please, pr gods.

Though I do have to give him credit for mentioning Sharon. He was the only one to say that if we were all honoring Ozzy, we also had to honor the woman who made Ozzy possible. Never would have pegged you for a feminist, Mr. Thornton, but kudos and a plate of french fried potaters to you, sir.

The plaque ceremony and photo op with a quick “I love you all!” from Ozzy, was followed by a performance from Camp Freddy. I couldn’t help thinking that for Ozzy, this must be like watching a bunch of his friends do karaoke. Sober.

With a couple fun softball performances from Donovan Leitch and some hot rocking blasts from best Freddy member Franky Perez, they bring out Mark fucking McGrath from Sugar Ray. Yeah, the host of that cheeze wiz entertainment show. Either Mark is going grey, or he overdid it on the frosted tips just for this occasion. Doesn’t he have some McG beach blanket music video shoot to go host? He pointed up to Ozzy in the balcony and said “Ozzy, my brother, this goes out to you from Newport Beach!” And then he began to butcher ‘Cat Scratch Fever’. It’s at that point I had to leave. Come to think of it, the balcony seats emptied out pretty quickly too. CAMP FREDDY FAIL.

Friday was reserved for the big Andaz Hotel party and the House of Blues Rock N Roll wine tasting event. I was lucky enough to be staying at the Andaz, which is quite plush since it’s remake, but still underneath has a bit of that riot house/Hyatt house vibe.

With guests like Ozzy staying there too, it had to still have that edge under all the class. The Virgin America/Andaz party boasted a red carpet event up by the rooftop pool with the promise of a few performances, including one by Chris Cornell who had been strangely left off all the set list time announcements. (Was Cornell forced from the festival by the Osbourne train or did he bow out on his own accord?) Although Chris made an appearance to shake some hands and pose for pictures, he didn’t perform, which prompted me to put forth divorce proceedings. The gorgeous hotel view skyline and ample cocktails made for a fun evening, even when an Aussie actor ambushed my camera techniques and turned the tables on me…

The day of the festival was bright and sunny with everyone in hot anticipation for Ozzy’s big performance. The music kicked off with spirited performances from The Donnas and Fishbone.

credit: eric voake

As the afternoon wore on and clothes were stripped off, Shiny Toy Guns played a very low key quiet set…(did they think they were playing for KCRW?) and Korn played angry head banging anthems proving that they lost one too many games of dungeons and dragons when they were kids. I skipped festival favorites Nico Vega to catch Brooklyn’s best, Earl Greyhound, whose new material shows a maturity yet they still know how to kick out the jams.

At last, I settled with my VIP vetted friends on the Bank of America parking lot roof and awaited the crazy train. Ozzy took the stage in front of a mass of all ages – toddlers to senior citizens. And hie performance was pleasing to all. Despite lobbing the f word here and there and hosing people down with foam, it was essentially a good, clean, tame Ozzy (minus Harriet) show. As Thornton had said earlier “Who says the Prince of Darkness can’t be a nice guy?”.

credit: Eric Voake

Here’s some choice moments and interviews with The Donnas, Iglu & Hartly, Norwood of Fishbone and The Mashup Brothers:

September 10, 2009

It’s been 40 years…can you believe it? Ozzy has been inspiring us musically for 40 years now. To help celebrate this, the Hollywood rock community joined together and kicked off the 2nd Annual Sunset Strip Music Festival with a special tribute honoring rock legend, Ozzy Osbourne.

The SSMF event honors icons who have made an impact on the legacy of The Sunset Strip. On Ozzy Osbourne’s first U.S. tour with Black Sabbath in 1970, the band performed a five-night stand at the legendary Whisky A Go-Go.

Ozzy’s well deserved tribute included special guest speakers Slash of Guns N’ Roses, actor Billy Bob Thornton, Henry Rollins of Black Flag, Motley Crue’s Tommy Lee, and comedian Jim Norton.

The evening commenced with an all star jam / tribute that included musicians John 5, Steve Stevens, Billy Morrison, Frank Perez, Steve Jones, Kenny Arnoff, Chris Chaney, Donovan Leitch, Mark McGrath and Corey Taylor.

The SSMF culminated into a huge live show that blocked the streets of the Sunset Strip that had Ozzy as the headliner and Korn as direct support. Sure, the traffic and parking was nuts, but it was mind-blowing to see the Sunset Strip shut down…all in the name of rock!

I will be posting some live shots of Ozzy and Korn from the big event in the next few days.

Stay tuned…

Everyone seems to be in agreement that Kanye West didn’t do himself any favors on Sunday night

Everyone seems to be in agreement that Kanye West didn’t do himself any favors on Sunday night during the VMA’s by boldly (and I think rudely) interrupting Taylor Swift’s award win. But, did Kanye do Jay Leno a HUGE favor by agreeing to show up during the premiere of Jay’s brand new 10 PM show? Kanye stopped by Leno and publicly apologized for the VMA bouhaha. Which naturally makes me wonder, how would Leno’s kickoff have gone without this juicy bit of guest contrition?

Did you all watch Leno? And what did you think of Jay’s second night? (With Tom Cruise, filmmaker Michael Moore, Cameron Diaz, comedian Jim Norton… and still more comedy). Putting Jay on at 10 P M is considered a risky move….and his first night scored very well with viewers and about a zillion of them tuned in. So what I’m wondering is
did Kanye save Leno’s first night and if you caught it would you have watched it anyway…and what, in general, is you opinion of the new show. Voice your choice in today’s featured poll!

Did Kanye Save Leno’s first show?

a) Yes. That’s exactly why I caught Leno’s first night.

b) No. I would have watched Jay’s premiere anyway.

c) Don’t care.

story link

Jay Leno is assembling an army of funnymen. The latenight primetime host comic has hired another seven corespondents for his new weeknight show. That’s in addition to the five he’s already named.

“Tonight Show” alum Ross Mathews will join “The Jay Leno Show,” along with comedians Liz Feldman, Brian Unger, Nick Thune, Owen Benjamin, Marina Franklin and Sebastian Maniscalco. Previously announced: D.L. Hughley, Mikey Day, Rachael Harris, Jim Norton, Dan Finnert.

The newhires detailed credits from the NBC press release below:

Feldman started performing stand-up comedy at 16, much to the dismay of her parents, whom most of her jokes were about. At 18, she landed a job as a writer/performer on Nickelodeon’s “All That.” She has since contributed to NPR, Esquire and Los Angeles Magazine, and she’s been a commentator on VH1, Bravo and E!. Feldman has written for “Blue Collar TV,” “The 79th Annual Academy Awards” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show,” for which she won four Emmy awards. Her signature awkward style can now be seen regularly on funnyordie.com’s “Shack Talk,” the talk show she hosts from a shack.

National Public Radio (NPR) listeners have heard Unger’s commentary regularly on “All Things Considered” and “Day to Day.” Once named one of Entertainment Weekly’s “100 Most Creative People in Entertainment” the comedian, writer and producer was an original correspondent on “The Daily Show” and now will provide regular pieces for “The Jay Leno Show.” Unger has also served as guest host on MSNBC’S “Countdown with Keith Olbermann.”

Thune performed his comedy on “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” and according to his website, “On both occasions, he won.” Nick also has a half hour special on comedy central and a series online at nicksbigshow.com. Thune can be seen in the upcoming Mike Judge movie “Extract” and the independent film “Highway 61″ opposite Tobin Bell.
Can one man with a dream win the heart of the world’s most powerful woman? This is a film like none you have seen before — the first musical docu-tragi-comedy in the history of cinema. It follows a love-struck soul’s hilarious, emotionally engaging, and ultimately shocking quest to woo former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. This unique romantic/political/biographic feature follows Devin Ratray, musician and former child actor (famed as Buzz in Home Alone), and besotted admirer of Condi, as he prepares to meet her. It’s the first retrospective of the Bush Administration and will inspire audiences to laugh, sing and protest about the past eight years

Jay Leno was “on” right off the bat, responding to some summer news he’d missed during his little hiatus at today’s NBC Television Critics Association press day for his new primetime show, The Jay Leno Show.

Michael Jackson’s death and Sarah Palin’s resignation were addressed, to which he quipped, “Those two go hand-in-hand.” He continued, “I felt bad obviously, but then again, the Palin thing cheered me up.” Alright, he definitely hasn’t lost his touch during the past few months.

And, there’s more…

So what will The Jay Leno Show bring to NBC? The “x-factor” is more comedy and tons of recognizable correspondents on board like D.L. Hughley, who will report on politics. “D.L. in D.C., no less,” teased Jay. Mikey Day, of Kath & Kim fame, and Rachael Harris, from this spring’s movie giant, The Hangover, will be around, too, as will comedian Jim Norton and The Dan Band.

NBC Nightly News host Brian Williams, who showcased his comedic talent as host of Saturday Night Live this season, has also signed on to host a small segment (which sounds brills!) tentatively titled, “Stories That Weren’t Good Enough for Nightly News.”

Other changes? Jay’s svelte new physique, for one. “I’ve been running four miles everyday—lost 12 pounds, thank you very much,” bragged Leno. There’ll be no desk and each show will have one, maybe two guests, where they’ll be “out of their chairs” so to speak. Classic Jay still exists though, including Jaywalking and Headlines.

The Jay Leno Show debuts Sept. 14 on NBC at 10 p.m.
