When i decided to start this blog, i wanted as a first post to be the one that i am about to write now. I have been searching on the internet for weeks, but i had no idea who the photographer was, nothing about the shoot or the model. I was only about 8 years old when my mother was riffling through Harper’s Bazaar and she showed me that editorial.

It was Peter Lindbergh’s in 1993 and his photographs for Harper’s Bazaar, in which Amber Valletta was cast as an angel who had unaccountably landed in New York. This shoot was mend to be one of the most tender and warmly received series he has made.

Aunque John Mayer es un tipo un tanto altivo, de esos que dan cierta rabia, hay que reconocer que es un autentico crack. Domina la guitarra como los grandes, tiene el soul y blues en las venas y domina su voz, sacando todo tipo de registros. Admirado por adolescentes MTV, por suerte se aparta de esté cliché “mojabragas” en lo musical.

Este es un ejemplo. Versión del clásico de Jimmy Hendrix, The wind cries Mary. Muy fiel a la original (lo cual está al alcance de muy pocos, ahí su mérito), pero con su estilo en el modo de cantar-la.

Y aquí otro personaje, Jamie Cullum. Quizas su mejor virtud son las buenas versiones que ha ido haciendo en su prematura carrera, como este ejemplo de Jimmy Hendrix, o Radiohead, o hasta Frank Sinatra…

All Along The Watchover. Canción de Bob Dylan que tiene la peculiaridad de haber sido la canción que más veces a tocado en directo (más de 1400 veces según el libro The Bob Dylan Encyclopedia, de Michael Gray. Y aunque el mismo Bob Dylan la haya tocado de manera distinta a la original publicada en el disco John Wesley Harding muchísimas veces, nos vamos a quedar con dos versiones:

Jimmy Hendrix, versión más conocida casi que la original.

Dave Matthews Band, canción que tocan mucho en los directos cerrando el concierto Aquí, en Central Park.

Quedaros con esta última definición.

No entiendo por qué la gente es tan cerrada. No entiendo por qué no pueden centrarse en la belleza de lo que están escuchando y simplemente se dejan llevar por los prejuicios que pueden despertar determinados experimentos musicales.

¿Por qué un grupo de heavy-metal no puede tocar acompañado de una orquesta sinfónica? Y viceversa, ¿por qué una orquesta sinfónica no puede tocar con un grupo de heavy-metal?

El purista de turno diría las canciones que toca esa banda, pongamos el ejemplo de Metallica, son muy blandengues, que no tiene que ver con lo que hacen ellos  y que no mola. El purista del bando contrario pondría el grito en el cielo, ya que una orquesta sinfónica no puede caer tan bajo, tocando ese tipo de música.

Ahora yo me pregunto, ¿no es esto bueno? ¿No es bello? ¿No es algo parecido a una “delicatessen” musical?

Supongo que ver a toda una orquesta con la cara pintada imitando a un grupo de rock tan legendario como Kiss, será todo un insulto para el purista de pura raza. Y para los del otro bando, esto será un verdadero escándalo y una auténtica fantochada.

Una vez más, vuelvo a preguntarme, ¿de verdad esto es tan dañino?

¿No deberían pensar toda esa panda de puristas en todo el trabajo que hay detrás de cada una de estas iniciativas? ¡Es música, por el amor de dios (ya sea Mozart, Jimmy Hendrix, Bach o John Lennon)! A quien realmente le apasiona la música le gustan este tipo de rarezas. Uno no se conforma con los géneros musicales tal cual, siempre busca algo nuevo, algo más.

Ya no quiero ni pensar los comentarios que pueden desatar un ballet como el que aparece en la película “Center Stage” (2000). En él se mezclan los elementos más clásicos de esta doctrina con música de Michael Jackson o Jamiroquai. Hay un momento que incluso puede recordarnos al mítico movimiento de “El lago de los cisnes”, ese en el que las bailarinas están entrelazadas y se mueven al ritmo del stacatto del oboe.

¿Por qué para algunos lo moderno y lo clásico no pueden convivir en un mismo escenario?

Nunca se sabe hasta donde se puede llegar con 5 dólares. Ni lo que los niños pueden aprender de los regalos. En el caso de James Marshall Hendrix, esos cinco dólares de 1956 le sirvieron para cambiar un ukelele de juguete por su primera guitarra acústica, con sólo 14 añitos. 11 años después, en mayo del 1967, un trío llamado “The Jimmy Hendrix Experience” lanzaba el albúm “Are you experienced”. So in one of my older posts I said I was going to talk about the bridge to no where.  When the lady bugs attacked, I felt that was more important to talk about.  So for all of those who have been waiting here it is. This bridge went from the union to the library.  It was a walkway to keep people from walking on the street.  This reduced much of the traffic.  As most people know you do not drive on that road during the day.  You will be waiting on a line of cars just trying to pass the crosswalk.  But when their was this bridge you did not have to worry about that.

I believe it was constructed in the 70s.

During this time stony brook was a more liberal school.  Their was many more protests on campus.  Stony Brook was known as a bigger party school.  Many events were happening at this school during this time period.  One big event was when Jimmy Hendrix came to play.

In the late 70s early 80s their was a protest on the bridge.  Hundreds of students came out.  I do not know what the protest was about but I do know that it turned into a giant party.  This had to be broken up by the police.  In response to this, the administration decided to dismantle the bridge so nothing like this could ever happen again.

Stony Brook did use this to their advantage.  The school sold the bricks to alumni for 100 dollars a piece.  They were able to raise about 100 thousand dollars by doing this.

Llego a casa del BEC con la sensación ya sabida de que este año nos lo vamos a pasar francamente bien. El Bizkaia Bilbao Basket se ha impuesto con más comodidad de la que dice el resultado al CB Granada (74-63). Los hombres de negro nunca se han visto amenazados por unos andaluces a los que, aunque sea demasiado pronto para juzgarles, les auguro sufrimiento esta temporada.

El partido ha venido a confirmar el buen hacer de la directiva durante el verano. Este equipo tiene muchísima calidad en ataque y buenas aptitudes defensivas heredadas de otros cursos siendo la única pega la irregularidad durante el partido. Pero nada preocupante que no se solucione con el tiempo.

Después de un mal inicio debido a la inoportuna lesión de nuestro anotador Chris Warren (esguince fuerte, mínimo un par de semanitas en el dique seco) y gracias a un espléndido Jerome Moiso el BBB consiguió una renta de 7 puntos que consiguió mantener hasta el final sin grandes esfuerzos. Como ya he dicho, a mí el Granada no me ha gustado en absoluto. Su (en teoría) buen perímetro exterior formado por Rannikko, Hunter y Joe Ingles ha jugado demasiado precipitado y sin tener las ideas demasiado claras. De no ser por Pablo Aguilar (aquí hay ala-pívot para diez años) y el recién bautizado “Jimmy” Hendrix el resultado hubiera sido mucho más sangrante.

Pero pasemos a los nuestros. Con la baja de Warren, la aportación del campeón de Europa Alex Mumbrú pasaba a ser determinante. Y  así  ha sucedido. Jugando siempre para el equipo, ha conseguido meter sus puntos además de dar muchas asistencias y capturar buenos rebotes.  Me ha encantado Alex, que ha sido protagonista en los mejores minutos del Bizkaia junto con la muy buena dirección de Javitxu Salgado. El muchas veces criticado capitán del Bilbao Basket siempre está ahí cuando se le necesita. Este año jugará mucho mejor al tener otro gran base a su vera. No llega a ser Marcelinho, pero Javi Rodríguez poco a poco va entrando en la dinámica que le exige Txus Vidorreta.

Aunque si con algo soñaremos hoy los aficionados del Bizkaia Bilbao Basket es con Moiso. La palabra que mejor define su juego es “sobrado”. Ha hecho 20-8 para un total de 25 de valoración con la gorra (y con un mate espectacular). Las posibilidades que tenemos con este “bicharraco” en cancha son infinitas. Algo más flojo atrás ha dominado el aro rival como lo hacía Shaq en el Staples. ¿Y dónde está Banic?  Aun no he nombrado a nuestro mejor hombre porque no ha hecho falta. Aprovechando a la perfección sus balones (como siempre), está todavía en un segundo plano y un puntito por debajo de su capacidad. A capitulo personal, creo que no ha venido muy “fino” del Eurobasket y Txus le está “castigando” dejándole más minutos en el banquillo. Volverá.

Por último, comentaba a mis amigos que si conseguimos que Markota y Seibutis exploten y hagan minutos de calidad saliendo desde el banquillo tendremos un equipo difícil de parar. Al croata se le ve más enchufado que el año pasado, pero al lituano le veo algo descolocado. Como si estuviera buscando su sitio en este nuevo equipo. No pasa nada. Como dijo Alex Mumbrú “aún estamos a un 70% de nuestras posibilidades”.

First things first, I was a bad blogger and went to see John Calvin perform last night without full camera batteries, tsk tsk me, ergo I couldn’t use my flash… Anywho, on to the write-up. Hope you’re having a great weekend! Enjoy!

John Calvin plays the kind of music that inspires people. As I was sitting last night hearing him play, I couldn’t keep my foot still and the words for this piece just seemed to come to me from out of nowhere.

I’m not one of those who is too easily impressed musically, but walking up to hear John Calvin perform I couldn’t tell if what I was hearing was live, or a jazz album being broadcast over the loud speaker.

Accompanied only by a drummer at this particular performance, Calvin seamlessly cycled between guitar, piano, vocals and some kind of strange ambient music device throughout the performance. He demonstrated a wide variety of talent on each of his instruments; from making his guitar sing in a style slightly reminiscent of Hendrix, switching over to his keyboard and playing various stanzas from a classical piece during the same song.

He got his start musically sometime around age seven or eight when he said his dad “used to play a lot of guitar around the house and would write songs for me and my mom and my brother. Really goofy parodies of famous songs.” From there he got his first guitar when he was eleven and said it was merely a “chick magnet” but he came to the realization that, contrary to popular belief, learning guitar doesn’t immediately secure you throngs of screaming female fans.

When asked about his singing, he paraphrases Bob Dylan by saying “’I’m definitely not Cruso but I can carry most notes’… he probably said that much better than I did though.” That’s the thing about Calvin, despite his musical talent he remains extremely down to earth and humble. You get the feeling he’s grateful to be able to do what he loves.

When you look at John Calvin, you can tell he is thinking musically. And when you see him on stage you can almost see the moment he gets an idea to try something new.

“I like fun music man, right now I’m getting into Folk Music. I’ve been on this Woody Guthrie kick lately, and Cisco Houston and Leadbelly, and of course Bob Dylan. Also going back and maybe listening to some old Robert Johnson albums just to get what the blues really was back in the day.”

He speaks in terms of musicians and band names when referencing those who have inspired him. From Radiohead and Incubus to the three albums he credits with influencing his music the most; Electric Lady Land by Jimmy Hendrix, and Highway 61 Revisited and Blood on the Tracks both by Bob Dylan.

When the topic of what he loves most about playing music comes up, his answer is simple; The people. “There’s just something about it when you make connections with people musically. It’s almost like making love platonically. It’s not sex, it’s not a conversation, it’s something that transcends anything. If there is a spirit, then music is its language. I can honestly say that because I’ve felt the best I’ve ever felt [when I’m] on stage with people, or when there is a listener performer connection and you know, there is energy being exchanged. It’s never stagnant, it’s just like a constant recycling of energy in the air, they give it to you and that just produces more. And what the beautiful thing is, it’s voluntary. People don’t have to give you that energy.”

Calvin has a great sense for his audience and seems to intuitively know when they like what he’s doing with a song. At the performance, a few songs the audience really got in to turned into on of his trademark jam sessions. It was the kind of on stage jam session you could tell was as much of a surprise to those playing as those in the audience. The kind of jam sessions you thought went out with your parent’s music and perhaps, like myself, hoped weren’t really gone.

Calvin is a one of a kind individual, when the topic of his style and his style inspirations came up he said, “I don’t watch a lot of movies or TV, so I’m a big fan of the musicians I play with and I play for. I have a lot of crazy psychedelic clothes in my closet because I secretly wish Hendrix was one of my good friends, god rest his soul. He always had wild style, and big hair, and I like big hair.” He prefers his shoes to come from Urban Outfitter, but isn’t crazy about their clothes. For those, he named American Apparel and thrifting as favorite sources pointing to his vest as he talked about picking it up at a Chicago thrift store for $6.

Calvin released his first EP, Walls of the City, in April 2009 and is currently in the early stages of his next release. He was tight lipped on what we can expect but when asked if it was a departure from what he has put out in the past, he agreed. He cited electronic influences such as Jamie Lidell as well as folk music, Midlake and his perpetual influences such as Bob Dylan and The Band. He plans to have that album released sometime mid 2010, hopefully before summer.

Walls of the City CD’s have been limited to a small run, so your best bet to hear this amazing musician is to go see him live. To get information on his dates friend him on Facebook under John Calvin Abney.

To say that Calvin is a musicians musician would be putting it mildly. He doesn’t play for money or fame, he plays for the audience and for the exchange of that ethereal thing he can never seem to quite put into words. He plays for the sake of music, and when you talk to him you know, for now anyways, that is more than enough for him.

One thing I can definitely say about having a scheduled plan for my running is that it leaves no excuses for getting out of bed.

I am, and have always been, an early riser.  On weekdays, I am up at 5:15 every morning whether I’m working out or not.  Often, I have struggled to negotiate a few extra minutes of sleep,when I knew I should be up working out.  I have not had that problem this week.  In fact, I have been ready to go and on the road by 5:30 every morning.

So today, I deliberately planned to get a slightly later start.  Maybe even as late as 8:00 am to simulate a race start time.  The best I could muster is 6:30.

One of the worst things about living in Florida is that even at 6:30 in the morning, it was literally 79 degrees, with 84% humidity for my morning 5k.  After spending some time running in Portland last month, I now appreciate just how much of an impediment the Florida humidity is.  I am looking forward to cooler temperatures on Thanksgiving Day, the day of the half-marathon.

So, today’s run was pretty good.  I started off slower than Thursday so that I would not burn out at the turn.  I started to kick at about the 2.5 mile mark, and that caught up with me.  I ended up having to walk for 20 seconds when my heart rate got to 190.  The sad thing is that I was less than a quarter mile from the finish at the time.  I need to be able to work through that so I can finish strong at the race.

All things considered, though, the slightly faster but more controlled pace worked out very well for me.  I finished in 31:11, which is right at a 10 minute mile.  I’d be happy to keep that pace all the way up to the big run, but hope that with work I can shave a few more seconds off in the next two months.

Speaking of two months, it’s exactly two months to the big race.
