My friends have organized a bridge night as an excuse for eight of us to get together once a month and eat, drink and play. We are learning to play, we already know how to eat and enjoy.  Last Friday we started with an absolutely amazing mushroom truffle soup, courtesy of Auberge du Pommier. 

As far as I captured it, the story goes like this.  Jay, the chef of Auberge, was one of the sous chef’s for Queen Elizabeth and learned this recipe.  He has since improved it, now making it one of the signature dishes at Auberge. Jay is my friend Ron’s cousin who requested the recipe after they tasted it at the restaurant last week. Darcy, Ron’s wife cooked it and the rest of us ate it.  It was spectacular, and she reports it is even better at the restaurant, I will re-visit Auberge to find out.  On a side note, Darcy did not have the blender lid on tightly and the soup is challenging to clean off of walls, carpet, floor, counter …

Our hosts are from Cape Breton Island, perhaps not renowned as the culinary capital of the world, using a cookbook from home, cooked a fancy stuffed chicken breast wrapped in prosciutto.  While I have posted that the Italian way is not to cook the prosciutto, it doesn’t mean it doesn’t taste good, this was excellent and fully enjoyed by all.

As to the bridge, it was after the food, I suspect that is why it was enjoyed as well.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is a national holiday tradition, and has been so for the past 83 years, and this year the tradition continued.

This year, the parade route returns to its roots with it ending at 34th street right in front of the Macy’s store. This is different than it has been in recent years.

 There is a list of performers that include Katharine McPhee, Jane Krakowski, and we have Spiderman, Kermit and Spongebob floating down the parade route. Ziggy Marley, the son of the legendary Reggae singer Bob Marley, performed a song with his daughter on a float decorated as a pirate ship.

 Ziggy performed his new song ”It’s Family Time” while holding his daughter in his arms so she could reach the mike…very cute.

Katharine McPhee, sporting her new sassy blonde ‘do, performed her new single “Had It All.” Jane Krakowski performed a Christmas tune. She may play a ditzy spoiled celeb on “30 Rock,” but in real-life Krakowski is quite the songbird.

Teen superstar Miley Cyrus made an exuberant appearance waving to her throngs of excited fans that lined the parade route waiting patiently for the international superstar. She looked great, in light of the bush crash tragedy that killed her long time tour bus driver this past friday. Today was much happier times for her.

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade aired on CBS and NBC at noon ET/9 am PT.

Humber College has the largest cooking school in Canada. My company has a relationship with them that lets me visit and enjoy; the facilities and professors are outstanding.  Anyway… I have a program for which master chef Leonhard Lechner is developing some simple serving ideas and recipes for me – I get to sit in the restaurant and he serves me 10-15 amazing things, one after another. 

One of his ideas I have to share right away as we approach the holiday season.

1.  Turn small muffin tin upside-down and apply one thin slice of pancetta on top of it.
2. Bake in oven at approximately 350 /375F till crispy.
3. Remove the crispy pancetta cups from the cups and stuff them with Caesar salad and garnish.

Amazingly for a master chef, Leo made one huge mistake on this simple idea – 12 won’t be nearly enough!

So, in all today was a good(ish) day. I woke up semi-early, as James decided to call. I couldn’t go back to sleep because my brother was playing his shitty music intensely loud throughout the house, and at 3pm I met up with Josh and Manny and Colleen and we hung out at Peter Pipers Pizza. good stuff.

Of course, in between the shitty music and my brother dropping me off at PPP, he and his friend Carlos decided it might be fun to go mudding in the lot next to ours. mudding. yes, they did it. I was held as the cameraman and they got some good video. I have shitty cell phone video, but alas, if i need to implicate them in something, I’ve got it.

So after PPP’s, Josh and Colleen had to take off to his uncle’s in Monte Alto to go to a fish fry. So, it being about 5p, we decided we’d hang out a little longer and went to the skating rink. I suck at roller blading. Of course, we stayed there for a long ass time and Manny and Noe still wanted to hang out. I didn’t so much anymore, but they made me. Which later developed into my parents being utterly angry with me. Not fun. But skating was fun. I fell a total of 4 times. Which is decidedly less than when I went ice skating, but then again, when I went ice skating I was holding on to the wall and I still sucked.

I’m just not good with finding my center of gravity.

Either way, after that, we headed to Manny’s house. Still didn’t get dropped off, and headed towards the outlets. Got some Whataburger, because, c’mon, that is GOOD. and eventually, after about 2 more calls from my mom, Noe and I headed back to drop me off. He decided to ignore his GPS’s directions the first time, and that’s where everything pretty much went south.

We got stuck about a mile from my house. 2 miles. whatever, it was pretty close. But fuck, that road has potholes like you would NOT believe. My mom kept texting me angrily, and when I called to see if they could come in the truck to pull us (finally, as we tried to get out by ourselves for a while) she yelled at me, threw the phone at my dad, he didn’t say anything… but he did hang up. SO, we were fucked. So, I called Abraham and he was at BK, but he said he’d come when he was done. Which was more than I could hope for anything, so yeah. We scraped around, sunk our feet into mud and Noe got really down and dirty. It was pretty bad. Finally, my mom called me that she was on her way and that there were at least 3 more pot holes from the one we got stuck in. Either way, we were going to be fucked.  She was yelling at me, told me to walk to the Jimmy and I did. But Noe didn’t want to leave, so I told him to call his dad. I called him after I reached the Jimmy, but he still insisted on staying and for me to leave (as the ‘rents were being atrocious) So I’m home.

Abraham just text me saying that he did go to our stuck site. Then kept texting me that he was helping Noe and that it was really stuck in there. Then he said that as he was leaving Noe’s sister was showing up. So as of 12:10a (we got stuck at 10p) Noe is still stuck over there on mile 1 1/2. FUCK THAT ROAD.

But, because I basically abandoned Noe there, in the mud… I gave him an avocado tree on FarmVille. It doesn’t help, but at least it adds to his tree collection. =]

So today my friend Maria and I went into the city to Martin Place to see Mika on Sunrise, hoping to meet him after the show….

We weren’t able to meet him sadly because he left out the back

But we did get to meet his bass/keyboard player Jimmy and his drummer (whose name I forget) so that was awesome…

Also got some cool photos, got our faces (and signs) on tv and generally had fun…

Kinda pissed that Mika didn’t come out after the show considering there was literally 6 of us waiting for photos with him…

i dreamt of dbsk last night. specifically jaejoong and junsu. we were all just cleaning up some room and singing mirotic in weird ways together. it was really nice. oh and i found out yunho’s hp number in march. but i should think he changed it already by now. they change hp numbers all the time, its hard to keep track if i had been keeping track but the thing is i haven’t been keeping track so i don’t feel frustrated at all. i wonder how all those cassies do it.

i did save yunho’s number in my hp though. you have no idea how much pleasure i get just by looking at my phone directory.

anyway i think my hamster is possessed. he bites the cage day and night and when he’s bored he climbs up the bars like a monkey/spiderman hybrid of a hamster. its scaring me and i think i’m going to get him a bigger bar-less cage soon.

anyway i just checked my facebook in a million years and people (or should i say, people who have only begun to realize the awesomeness of kpop and are now spamming their facebook profiles with stupid random facts about their idols just to prove that they are all-knowing or something) should just stop going on and on about their kpop idols on their facebook statuses. its like. beyond stupid. just shut up please, seriously. its like. pissing the crap out of me. just shut up. yes that includes you.

Essa noite vou dormir feliz, finalmente eu enchi a cara.

É inaceitável pensar em tudo que nos limitamos a fazer quando estamos sobrios. Esse post, por exemplo, não terá sentido algum depois que meu copo de whisky acabar, mas foda-se, pé na porta e soco na cara de quem achar ruim.

Não importa, eu só tô tentando me sentir alegre com isso. E não me venham com aquele discurso xXx que eu nem tenho mais saco pra ouvir, já o decorei e se quiserem eu posso dizer essas merdas todas por tópicos, usando cores diferente e no final ainda colocar legenda. É sempre o mesmo clichê, e sempre a mesma resposta: Tem gente que não bebe e tá morrendo.

My daughter has an away basketball tournament this weekend, that means the parents are looking for an upgrade on pizza and have asked me for a reprise on the last tournament: mortadella and capocollo panini; prosciutto wrapped breadsticks; and hot and mild cacciatore.  Last time I expected the kids to focus on the sandwiches and leave the prosciutto and cacciatore for the parents, boy was I wrong!  It could be the Italian influence of Andrea Bargnani of the Toronto Raptors, but I think kids today have been exposed to many more foods and appreciate a more sophisticated taste at a younger age.

I am happy to put the spread on because it really is very easy. There might be a couple things on the planet that taste better than cacciatore, but not with so little prep time.  When time is of the essence, all you need is a mild and a hot cacciatore.  Slice on a diagonal, lay out artistically and you are done.  Honestly, people will tell you these are amazing.  I like to slice the hot a little thinner to so I can get people to try it.  I read the other day that chili peppers are the fastest growing spice in the world; people are eating more spicy things and spicier things.

With just a little more time I go with prosciutto wrapped around a bread stick. Cut a slice in half lengthwise and wrap down half the breadstick.  My personal favourite is mortadella on the breadstick, but last time I learned it can only be done just before serving or the breadstick goes soggy.  Sometimes I drape the mortadella, put the breadsticks in a glass and let people wrap their own.

For Panini I prefer the Italian way, bread and deli meat; nothing else to dilute the taste.
