Walked up to the local supermarket this morning to pick up a few items and when I got there the store music was North American Christmas carols. So, while shopping for YPE liquid dishwashing soap among other items and between listening to “Let It Snow, Let It Snow” and “O Come All Ye Faithful”, my brain was asking “Where are we?”. After all these years, Christmas here still seems like an imported cultural event, a Disney presentation or Hollywood set getting ready to film some scene for an old black and white Christmas movie.

Christmas was buying a real tree, decorating it and then smelling the pine scent when you returned home from school. Of course you had to have cold weather, college football on Saturday and pro ball on Sunday. All this had to be set in motion by Thanksgiving.

In November 68, I was in Rio processing out of Peace Corps. I had been at the US Embassy for some reason and on the way back to the Hotel Florida (the Peace Corps hotel) near the Palácio do Catete just off Flamengo Beach, I decided to take the long route, which went through the Flamengo Aterro (park) and passed by the Monumento aos Pracinhas (Monument to Brazil’s soldiers who died in WWII). I saw a large group of kids, maybe over a hundred, milling around with several adults trying to keep them under control. As I was watching, a helicopter (not a common sight back in 68) buzzed the area at low altitude. The kids went crazy. It was then that I could see that the chopper was carrying Santa Claus; red suit and long, shiny, gray beard. When the chopper landed, Santa bounced out and disappeared into the crowd of kids. It was hot, it was humid, it was the tropics! And there was Santa.

Hi everyone! We’re starting to wind down the 12 days of Christmas crop at inspireME. Only a few days left of wonderful holiday projects. I have been so inspired by all the beautiful things that the ladies have created for this crop. Today’s project is no exception. It’s a beautiful holiday Tussie Mussie by design team member Amy Tara. Here is a little peek.

To see the full project and to view all the details on the 12 day crop, please go here.

I just got back from a crop myself. It’s always so great to hang out with the old Paper Playground gang. I spent an awful lot of time yakking and eating, but I did make a few cards just for fun. The first is for Laura’s sketch #39 at 2sketches4you.

Basic Grey patterned paper, Little Yellow Bicycle chipboard, rub-on by K&Co. Trim is Making Memories and baker’s twine by Martha Stewart.

I also played along with CPS sketch #142.

Papers by Basic Grey and Making Memories. Santa tag is K&Co.

Both sites have wonderful sketches if you’re looking for inspiration in card-making. If you haven’t checked them out yet, DO!

Thanks so much for stopping by! I always love to hear from you all!

All of us know the lines to the first verse of one, sacred, Christmas carol and that would be “Jingle Bells.” The tune is hummable but what’s that danged second verse? Who cares? Let’s write our own second verse to “Jingle Bells.”

Rob Weir has this version:

Jingle Bells, Batman Smells
Robin laid an egg.
The Batmobile (a beat) lost a wheel
And The Joker got away.

I like how Rob’s blog says he’s “thinking the unthinkable, pondering the imponderable, effing the ineffable and scruting the inscrutable.” Sounds like somebody’s else’s blog, non?

Now, stop it y’all and top it. What’s your second verse for “Jingle Bells?” By the way, if anybody knows a better rhyme for Chattanooga than “Ooga Booga,” please let Southernness know.

You’re all probably thinking that it’s way too soon to be discussing the Christmas holid

You’re all probably thinking that it’s way too soon to be discussing the Christmas holidays. Keep a few things in mind before you start reading.

1)Thanksgiving has become somewhat non-existent for me. Squeezing a turkey into a tiny Italian oven is too much work, no Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and having tried to celebrate a Thursday holiday at the weekend is just sad and not worth it.

2) Since the big guy does not share my enthusiasm for Christmas, it’s never too early to start pounding him over the head with Christmas spirit.

The holidays have been a traditionally unpleasant time for us. Basically thanks to our relatives and someone’s lack of enthusiasm. Let’s run down some of the things I’ve heard in our 3 years together.

We don’t have room for a tree.

Why did you waste money on this? (I’ve heard a lot of weird responses to gifts I’ve given, but this was a new one.)

I cannot f@£$%!! believe that on December 21st at 7 p.m. that there are no seats available on the train-what am I supposed to do, book our seats a month in advance?

Yeah, you get my drift.

All of this is especially challenging for me because I L-O-V-E Christmas. Christmas lights, cookies, jingle bells and all that jazz. My basic feeling is that Francy has never really been exposed to much of it. Oh sure, every year he probably witnessed his mother make 2, 376, 000 Christmas cookies, which if you refer back to the whole post on sweets you’ll understand why we still have containers of cookies in April and I have to have a fight to throw them out.

Another reason I suspect the holidays have never had a lot of pleasant memories for Francy is that he’d been forced to spend them with his relatives. Not unlike the tradition of inviting relatives you don’t like, never see and don’t care about to your wedding, you are required by some unwritten law to spend Christmas together. Even if it means 10 relatives pile into the home of 1 family and proceed to not speak to each other except to bitch about the food and relatives who aren’t there. I feel that this phenomenon is best explained with the story of Christmas 2007.

After having promised his mother that we would spend the holidays in Puglia we discovered that one might have bought train tickets earlier. With the annual migration of Italians who return south every winter, although in this case it’s less organized and more cutthroat, one should have their train seat booked by December 1st at the latest. So, when our holiday plans were turned upside down, the next days consisted principally of swearing and yelling, talking to relatives to explain the situation followed by more swearing and yelling. In the end we discover that taking the bus is our only choice. Yes, an 11-hour bus ride that starts at 8 p.m. and gets you into Puglia at about 7 the next day.

We managed to make it down to spend New Year’s with mamma and her family. Because the choice was either having our backs broken day after day or just a little sore from the bus ride.

One of the nice (yes…there are some nice things about mamma) is that she stocks her pantry with whatever she thinks someone might like to eat or drink. The only problem is that if, let’s say you buy a six-pack of beer in January 2006, it’s not good to serve it in December 2007. Are you following the story? Do I need to tell you what happened?

But that’s not the problem.

Yes, seriously because at one point when we were both delirious and exhausted from a lack of fluids, his uncle shows up and tells us to get ready because we have to go to his house in the next town over.

YAY!

I was out shopping yesterday afternoon and I saw hoardes of people gathered in the middle of the street along with around 20 security guards. Being nosey I had to go and see what the attraction was so I shuffled through the crowd and there they were- real reindeer!

This was truly an OMG moment for me because I don’t remember ever seeing reindeer before and I was struck by how beautiful they are. Also, as you only really see them portrayed alongside Santa on christmas cards and not throughout the year you kinda forget- or rather I forgot that they are not mythical creatures. I stared at them for several minutes just wanting to stroke their faces but of course I didn’t lest I lose a few fingers. My reaction was much the same as it was when I first saw buffalos in Brooklyn Zoo and I was all- OMG BUFFALO as I had only ever seen them in films. Did you know reindeer even have fur on their antlers? That makes me sound like a complete idiot but really- I didn’t know.

Truly stunning creatures but my awe was shattered as someone shouted out that they should be out in the wild not kept in behind bars. I don’t know where they came from or where they are usually kept but I hope they are well treated and have ample space to roam about and just be.

Why were they there? It appears that they and “Santa” were being used to give sleigh rides to people but I didn’t hang around to see this as it wasn’t scheduled to start for another 45 minutes and I had to move on. I did feel a bit uneasy though that they were going to be put to work pulling people around in circles just so that they can have the full jingle bells experience.

WEEK 1 – 58 days to go

Ok.. Here it goes. The very first weekly christmas themed blog.. wow!

I haven’t really decided what to include yet.. so this is off the top of my head:

1. Lovely Cards- The other day when I was searching around the Topshop sale (yeeeyy!) I stumbled upon these lovely, lovely cards. I absolutely adore the bunny design and part of the money spent is donated to charity.

2. Decorations- Now that I am a big girl I am trusted to decorate the tree, which means decorations! I thought that this (not sure exactly what it is!) was utterly lovely. I reminds me of cinnamon and gingerbread and warm open fires.

3. Food- Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without being able to eat enough mince pies to make a tower about as big as an elephant (or, in my dad’s case, a tower about the size of a double decker bus or two), so I typed ‘mince pie recipe’ into google and the first on the list was this one. With the promise of being unbelievably easy even the worst cook can try to cook some christmas cheer.

4. Party Dress- With all the parties at christmas a dress is essential, and what better than this lovely dress from urban outfitters. It might be a little on the expensive size, but who cares, its Christmas!

5. Prezzies- number 1 on the list this year is ‘Mistakes in the Background‘ by Laura Dockrill (♥). Its a lovely looking book that I found while out shopping yesterday (but was too stingy to buy with my own money) full of all her doodles, that made me smile.

Well thats it for this week, and with Christmas creeping closer every day, I will be on the lookout for anything beautiful and christmassy for next time.

x

(p.s I hope you enjoy the festive colours.. I thought it would give these special entries a bit of pizzaz!)

Ang walang kamatayang “whenever I see boys and girls: na intro.

‘Yun yun e.

Hala. LSS na ako.

ELCA Grand Canyon Bishop Steve Talmage calls for humble approach in working with tribe

Bishop Talmage acknowledges God was at work with Navajo long before missionaries arrived

(Rock Point, Arizona) – The fourth video on the Installation of Rev. Dr. Lynn Hubbard and Rev. Deborah Haffner Hubbard at the Navajo Evangelical Lutheran Mission (NELM) in Rock Point, Arizona by Bishop Steve Talmage of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Grand Canyon Synod.

Bishop Talmage installed the Hubbards on Sun., June 7, 2009.

In this video, Bishop Steve Talmage talks Navajo medical milestones like Dr. Lori Arviso Alvord, who in 1994 was the first Navajo woman to be board certified in surgery. (See photo collage below)

I believe there is a need to maintain Jesus’s spirit of humility in seeking to discover the bridges that can be made and even crossed between the cultures and histories that exist in this place, Bishop Talmage told those gathered for the Installation Service.

In our less than perfect history of over 50 years of ministry at Rock Point, those who have come from the outside have struggled to be humble, patient and willing to recognize the need to discover how God has already been at work among the people here, Bishop Talmage said.

Love the stranger, love the neighbor and a friend with an open heart – with the open heart that Jesus has for all of God’s children,” said Bishop Talmage of the effect of the mission and school on those who do not know Jesus.

Bishop Talmage’s message of humility and realization that God has long been a part of the Navajo culture even before missionaries resonates with Rev. Dr. Lynn Hubbard, who became executive director of the Navajo Lutheran Mission in the spring of 2009 and has a been an outspoken advocate for Christian respect for the American Indian culture and traditions.

While still following the original goals of the mission, Rev. Hubbard is taking a respectful and humble approach to the mission’s work in the Navajo community.

He believes the purpose of the mission is to minister with the Navajo not for the Navajo.

With the century-long horrors of the Christian boarding lasting to mid 1900s still fresh in elders’ minds, Hubbard believes we need to practice healing and reconciliation, not judge people whose path to the divine life might be different than ours.

Rev. Dr. Lynn Hubbard, who sings and plays guitar, is planning a series of concerts starting in the fall of 2009 at churches and other venues in Arizona, New Mexico, Nevada, Colorado, California.

The free fundraising concerts are to raise awareness about mission projects and the new Mission in Reverse model that the mission is operating under since he arrived in the Spring of 2009.

Good As I Been To You“. Hier wurden die amerikanischen Wurzeln verarbeitet und auch bei „Christmas in the heart“ ist dies der Fall. Weihnachtslieder gehören zur amerikanischen Kultur. Ein weiterer Beitrag von „His Bobness“ zur Verarbeitung der Musik in seinem Land. Für Fans ist „Christmas in the heart“, für die anderen löst sie Kopfschütteln aus.

It’s been a little over a year since I posted one of the most popular RLG posts of all time: The Top 10 Strangest Sex Toys. Well, my friends, it is time for Round 2!

1. Jesse’s Sweet Talking Pussy: It’s a portable vagina…that talks! Because what every man really wants is a small, creepy looking plastic pussy that speaks to him while he beats off into it.

And hey, it can be yours for only $50, batteries included. What a deal!

2. Glow-In-The-Dark Penis Pump: Uh, beyond the fact that penis extenders are just whacky…who needs a glow in the dark one? Too ashamed of your penis size to look at it in the light? Or did you spend all your money on sex toys and forget to pay your utilities bill?

I’m sure you’ll find plenty of ladies interested in a quickie.

If you insist on buying this love doll, she comes with her own false teeth, to make the experience that much more realistic.

We had our second practice with our barbershop quartet which consists of Bruce Nickell, Sam Roberts, Mark Evangelos and myself. Strides have been made since last week. We actually have a gig for December if we can be ready for it. Bishop Wildey asked us to sing at a community Christmas program that the ward puts on. So, we started practicing an arrangement of Jingle Bells. For the first time, it really sound like we can knock it out by then.

Lisa and Lori said they saw my postcards at the bookstore. It is kind of a kick hearing someone say they saw them. It is even more of a kick when they don’t expect it, turn the postcard over and see that it is a post card by “db walton”.

Lisa (Natalie's friend) and Lori (Lisa's sister) from Lehi, Utah

I’ve been busting hump all evening with a list of “to do” things. Someone was supposed to come buy the old dryer, but didn’t show up. However, we spent a portion of the night clearing a path so we can get the dryer out the basement door. Oh, well, the next person to come along with $100 has a clear path to carry it out the door and into their truck.

Oh, I completed and passed the test for Six Sigma Yellow Belt. It is a lot stuff I learned in college statistics, but with some different acronyms thrown in there. But, at least I passed the exam. (My goal was actually to pass it by 9/30/2009, but oops!)

Travis Terry is a native Flutist of the Pima Nation who is born of the indigenous Gila River Pima Nation in Sacaton, Arizona.

On his myspace page, Native flutist Travis Terry says:

“I grew up surrounded by ethnic music and instruments of long ago, including the Native flute,” Terry said. “As a child I had natural appreciation for music, which contributed to me becoming a self-taught flutist in my adult years. My military service has sent me around the world exposing me to the musical traditions of various cultures.”
“Ethnic music was a continual interest and drew me closer to this dream of creating music. I have always been grateful to my parents (Irving and Caroline) for supporting my dreams and at the same time continually teaching me and my sisters (Denise and Dawn) the indigenous Pima culture, traditions and language. These values have aided me in blending contemporary culture with this heritage of the ‘Desert People.’ This conscious blending of cultures is very much reflected in my musical compositions and playing style.”
“After my military service, I visited Canyon De Chelly where my good fortune led me to meet my lovely wife Cara and settle in Chinle, AZ. Cara and her family taught me the ways and language of the Dine (Navajo) people.”
