I realize “Manekineko Duck No Uta” is nothing more than a way for an insurance company to peddle product, but that small fact isn’t going to stop me from writing even more about the left-field hit of Japan for 2009. To keep the song fresh heading into the holiday season, the folks behind this cutesy jingle went and recorded a Christmas version of the song, slowing the overall pace down and making it a bit more carol-like. Plus, the duck-cat is wearing a Santa outfit now.

British Airways and the Spanish airline, Iberia, are in merger talks?!

I’ve flown BA before, but all my memory can supply for Iberia is their jingle from the early 1970’s, which is filed next to the terribly dated Iran Air jingle.  Iberia’s just sang their brand name several times, but Air Iran seemed to make a kind of social promise that….well, might be as improbable to our current sensibilities as a merged airforce would have been to those venerable British and Spanish monarchs of centuries ago:

“…in our hearts and many more ways
America, we’re going your way!
Air Iran is going your way…”

Well, what do you get when you take a CHR jingle package and make it for Country radio stations? Most stations today use updating jingles, but I want to hear CHR packages on country stations all over the states, like WTNR Grand rapids.

Country PD’s, please make it happen! I know most country playlists today are more of a rock edge, but please put CHR jingles on your radio station. it would sound cool and your listeners will like it!

And while your at it, why don’t you get sound effects to put at the end of the jingles like Soundrangers!

So in a nice way, to all you country program directers, I suggest you get to it. Jam would be a good company for you. or ReelWorld. any company that offer CHR jingles.

How many times have you been pleasantly surprised by an unexpected act of service? Maybe when you went to the grocery store and asked the produce guy how a new kind of apple tastes, and instead of getting a description, you get a free sample. Maybe you expected an annual bonus from work and the check was 20% more than last year. Maybe you asked your kids to clean up their rooms and you came home to your kitchen being cleaned up as well. Perhaps a problematic credit card company reversed a late charge even when they did not have to. You know how that feels, and you remember who made you feel that way. This is the impact you leave when you give more than what is asked of you.

Coupled along with the concept of versatility is the effort of doing more than expected. Without a doubt a significant part of anyone’s success is because they do more than I am asked for.

For John, that might take the form of needing to add one of his other talents – conducting, playing keyboard, and writing/arranging – when in a session.

Here’s John:
“In some situations it’s a matter of being available to be the conductor of a group when no additional conductor is brought in. Perhaps I just need to get the singers through a tough passage, but I might be responsible for the entire session. My background for conducting instrumental as well as vocal ensembles comes into play at these times.

“On other occasions my keyboard skills have been required to get the group through a piece of music. Whether on the session or prior to it where we are figuring out the parts, I never charge extra for these times, and always am available to help.

“Simply knowing music and harmony can drastically affect the positive outcome. I have sometimes noticed mistakes made in the score, especially when there is a repeated pattern, and a note seems out of place in comparison to the previous presentation of the similar material.”

If you have a sharp eye and good musical ear you can catch these potential errors and point them out, too. In situations like this it is best to study the pattern and listen closely, because sometimes a difference IS what is wanted. However, when all the other elements of the music are identical as I a previous passage and one thing is distinctly different, you should ask if the difference is correct. It’s a fair and beneficial question that will help the session as a whole and up your value as a contributor and a team player as well.

Outside the studio but just as significant is the fact that both Elin and John serve on the Screen Actors Guild Singers’ Committee. They often give very significant amounts of time, whether it is in rectifying a situation in the work place, helping in the organization of an event for the community, or even engaging multiple ideas to create new structures for our complicated union rules.

Giving more than asked for is always beneficial. You can never lose by being available to assist. To the contrary, you can really gain traction on your upward climb. This concept is certainly not specific to session singing. This is a concept that can help in every area of your life.

What skills can you bring to the table? Start today, and when someone asks you for anything, go a step further and add a little something extra to it. You will be glad you did.

Inking The Paper is my daily writing blog about writing.  I like to write.  I have for thirty years written poems, short stories, and little jingles mostly on what was at hand, usually a napkin and occasionally the back of a receipt.  Now, I carry a small wire bound notebook and a good pen for when inspiration hits and for long-term projects in the works.

I think my best poetry is written on napkins.  One of my favorite pieces of poetry I wrote was during an impromptu gathering of artist, musicians, and writers at a community college in the mid-west.  Titled:  The Coffee House.

The Coffee House

It’s not the place; nor the peoples faces,

it’s the words pronounced in the space.

It’s the message conveyed;

the voice spoken.

Told you this was getting popular – the Afflac jingle “Manekineko Duck No Uta” has gone from 30-second spot to twee-tastic music video to an actual live experience. Japan Probe has got the video.

Most startling of all is this performance seems to be happening on Music Station, probably the biggest weekly music show on in Japan (and also a show I keep meaning to live blog for this here site, but always find myself going out on Friday night instead). Mariah Carey just performed on this show, and now they’ve got this. Really, the only thing you can say about this tiny phenomenon is it just keeps getting cuter (peep the flu mask the kid is sporting). Also, this song is probably better than 50 percent of the stuff Music Station usually features.

This Afflac ad starring the apparently famous all over the world Afflac duck and a cat has been running on Japanese TV a bunch since about mid August. It’s got cute music, cute dancing animals and I’m sure great information about insurance. Watch it, it’s charming.

Turns out the “cute music” in the ad is actually a full-fledge song. And said tune currently sits at the six spot on some sort of mobile J-Pop store. It’s only one ranking on one chart I just found out existed, so this isn’t like the Crazy Frog epidemic from a few years ago. But still interesting. Here’s the full song, complete with a video so cute it makes every twee band I’ve ever posted here look like Black Flag.

First, I have to reiterate, damn that’s cute. The “quack quack quack” bit rules. Second, there is absolutely no point to talking about the artistic merit of this song because it’s an unabashed jingle – nobody disects Mac Tonight. So what to make of “Manekineko Duck No Uta?” It’s a nice little musical curiosity that has more to say with Japan’s obsession with cuteness (a very real thing) than anything about the music scene here. Though “cuteness” definitely can propel an artist up the charts, this being a very extreme example.

If nothing else, anyone who downloaded this ad jingle from a few years back shouldn’t feel so ashamed.

It’s pledge week at my local public radio station, so I thought of this:

You know you’re listening to the wrong radio station when…

1.   They’re doing the count-down and you’ve never even heard of #5.

2.   The news summary is a recap of today’s “soaps.”

3.   Some of your favorite composers are referred to as “dead men in wigs.”

4.   You hear them sign off with: “10-4 Good Buddy.  Over and out.”

5.    Instead of pledge breaks, they waste your valuable time with advertisements.

6.    The ad jingles feature the voice of Mike Tyson.

7.     They discuss the Olympics, and it somehow has to do with getting into heaven.

8.     New concepts are introduced with the word “Dude!”

9.     They list Monty Python as a rare and endangered species.

Dude!  Monty Python IS a rare species. Better flick to that station. Around here, it’s 91.7 FM, WUGA.

O novo jingle do Guaraná Antárcticaracatica é um mega-remake daquele jingle que inexplicavelmente é um dos favoritos de todos os tempos (pena que esse o Mário Lúcio não fez…) A década de ouro da publicidade brasileira são os anos 80, mas isso não impede que o jingle da Pipoca com Guaraná, de 1993 (quando a publicidade brasileira já estava completamente borocoxô comparada a de 5 ou 10 anos antes), seja um dos mais lembrados até hoje.
A diferença é que desta vez não tem pipocas, e sim um grande elenco humanóide. Se você não viu, caLLLama. Com toda a certeza, no intervalo do Pânico na TV, talvez mais de uma vez…
(PS: Pra mim o melhor comercial do GA foi quando um apresentador mostrou uma plantação de guaraná e perguntou: “Agora pede pra eles mostrarem a plantação da coca…”)

This 1980 record (once owned by someone called Berry, according to the sticker in the topleft corner ^-^ ) is produced by the brothers Ray and Chris Anderson and holds, like the title says, 100 short jingles created with a sonovox accompanied by some cheesy moog shots. It all sounds rather amateuristic and the recordings could’ve used some de-essing, but, that crappiness is what makes the record even more fun!

My very first ATC swap! *squee*  The Ichi drawing (bottom right) was my second ATC ever. The first being my GORE ATC which hasn’t started yet. These ATC’s are going to Judy, Jingles , & Danica, weaselwatchr for the Ferret ATC swap. They were sent out today, and I hope they make it to them soon. I plastic wrapped the ATC’s themselves, because I don have any coverings.. taped them shut, so they should not get wet in travel. I did that because it’s been raining here for a few days, and I figured they’d get wet at some point in this dreary state.

não sei você mas eu tenho a impressionante capacidade de acordar com uma música na cabeça. praticamente TODO SANTO DIA. não sei se é um dom (provavelmente não), um desvio ou alguma doença. o fato é que isso acontece. e pode ser qualquer música. desde campainha de celular até a última baba da britney spears. não tem critério.

é batata. basta me levantar que a tal música começa a tocar na minha cabeça. às vezes dura o tempo de chegar até o banheiro. às vezes dura horas. mas já teve vezes que ficava o dia inteiro com ela na cabeça. sem falar nos momentos que me pego assoviando a maldita durante o dia. as cenas patéticas de air guitar, air drums e até air saxofone (!?) ficam a cargo da sua mente pervertida, ok?

ja teve vezes também que acordava todo dia com A MESMA melodia na cabeça. acho que isso acontecia mais na época em que eu dormia ouvindo música. mas agora só durmo depois de ler alguma coisa. ou assistindo televisão. portanto, é mais raro uma música tocar dois dias seguidos por aqui.

pois bem, o lance é que uma das musiquinhas mais recorrentes durante esses anos de transtorno mental possui os seguintes versos:

“eu acordei…
tirei meu pijama,
fui pra minha cama, e depois durmi…
daí eu fui tomar café
botei o meu pijama e fui pra minha cama ié ié…
na cama com pijaaaamaaa…
na cama com pijaaaamaaa…
na cama com pijaaaamaaa…”

lindo. não sei se ela ficou impregnada na minha cabeça logo cedo por causa da temática ou pela melodia simples e viciante. passei anos e anos acordando com essa musiquinha na cabeça. o pior de tudo é que eu não conseguia lembrar de quem era a maledeta, nem de onde eu a conhecia. acredite, já passei horas concatenando sobre a origem da canção com direito a varredura na minha coleção de discos (principalmente aqueles vergonha alheia) para tentar identificar o autor ou a origem da dita cuja. em vão.

até que hoje, sem razão alguma, por mero acaso, me deparo com um vídeo de um gordinho de camiseta preta (esse da foto acima) cantando a maldita canção a capella. repara como ele tá “se curtindo”. foi como se eu tivesse enfiado o dedo na tomada de 220v. tudo passou a fazer sentido.

me lembrei da minha infância, da época em que eu assistia castelo rá-tim-bum, glub-glub, doug funny, o fantástico mundo de bob, da época que o marcelinho carioca era o maior craque da história do futebol. de quando meu pé era preto de tanto jogar bola descalço no asfalto quente. isso mesmo, seu ratinho de condomínio, naquela época as crianças brincavam na rua. olha que absurdo!

sim, bateu uma nostalgia.

isso me fez pensar no poder que uma canção pode ter. no poder do hit. no quão importante é um hit para um artista. hit, por definição, tem a ver com paradas de sucesso. se vende é hit, ponto. simples assim.

no entanto, pra mim, hit é aquela canção que bate em você e gruda na sua cabeça. não me espanta as canções dos beatles habitarem o imaginário de tanta gente até hoje. isso pra ficar só no século vinte. o que dizer então de mozart, bethoven, debussy, etc… que viraram campainha de celular. música do caminhão de gás.

amiguinhos, me desculpem, mas a “marcha fúnebre” é um tremendo hit. assim como o “parabéns pra você”. o hit não apenas gruda na cabeça como traz consigo emoções, imagens, lembranças. por isso a música pop talvez seja o bem mais precioso já inventado pelo ser humano. podia filosofar aqui sobre a época dos trovadores, das cantigas de amor e cantigas de amigo… mas fica para a próxima.

ao descobrir a origem da tal música do pijama, também refleti sobre o poder da publicidade. como ela pode influenciar uma criança. como ela pode eventualmente arruinar a vida de uma pessoa (no caso a minha) para todo o sempre.

a publicidade é a coisa mais perversa que o ser humano já inventou. hitler que o diga.

o cara que faz jingle nada mais é que um popstar que não deu certo. neste caso, a publicidade foi a única salvação. ponto.

sei lá quantos anos essa música tem, mas aposto que faz mais de uma década que eu a tenho grudada na cabeça. sou da época da publicidade clássica, de várzea, aquela publicidade moleque. onde não era necessário bunda pra vender um produto. bastava um bom jingle. coisa que ainda, felizmente (ou não), perdura no rádio.

enfim, se você tem mais ou menos a minha idade vai reconhecer o vídeo abaixo. é dá época em que aqui em casa só tinha televisão preto e branco. vai vendo.

mas antes um alerta: só dê o play se você realmente tiver certeza disso. você corre um grande risco de ter essa música latejando na sua cabeça pelos próximos anos da sua existência. agora é por sua conta e risco.

Nesse mês de Outubro entrou no ar a nova campanha da Chesf contra as queimadas perto de estações de energia.
E nessa campanha, criada pela agência Mart Pet, de Recife, a Audiola produziu o jingle que contou com a participação de nada mais nada menos do que da dupla Cajú e Castanha!

A campanha conta com duas versões principais, um filme de 30s, produzido pela Opara Filmes e um jingle de 45s para rádio, além de mais algumas versões para veiculação nas regiões próximas às estações da Chesf.

So when I was a kid, watching cartoons before being thrust into the prison that I called school, there was a commercial that would come on EVERY morning, no fail.  It was for a place called The Diesel Driving Academy.  It was a damn catchy jingle and it didn’t take long for me and my dad to start singing it EVERY TIME it came on.  For your reference, I have included a video of the jingle, although it’s not the same commercial I remember watching — same song though:

CALL 1-800….5-5-1….8-900… DIESEL DRIVING ACADEMY… And would you believe that even though I hadn’t seen that commercial in ten years I was still able to recite the number correctly…  That’s successful advertising.

The commercial I remember didn’t even have a moving truck in the background.  It was a still photo of  DDA truck and the number was flashing in huge typeface at the bottom of the screen.  I say that they should’ve kept it like that.
