We’re getting San Diego Beer Week started out right with a bunch of new music on the playlist including one of our favorite albums, Naturally by JJ Cale. Eric found a nice vinyl copy at Amoeba, SF that reinspired us to this songwriting giant’s amazing solo albums. Eric Clapton may not have gotten out of the 70’s with a career had it not been for this man’s flawless songs like After Midnight and Cocaine. Mr. Cale also got some nice ASCAP mailbox money from his song They Call Me the Breeze as recorded by Lynyrd Skynyrd. JJ currently resides in Escondido.

Check out JJ’s recent version of They Call Me the Breeze on the Jools Holland Show, looking somewhat Jay Porter-esque. Jay, good luck on the new project!

The United States Of America – Love Song For The Dead Che

A the dawn of an ordinary Sunday
I remember the taste of you, sweet in my mouth,
Late in the year.
And in the stillness of the Oriente rainfall
I remember the warmth of you, still in my arms,
Late, late in the year

I will bring to you flowers in the night
Soft as trembling fingers touch you–love,
I can offer you wine and candlelight
Late in the year.
Late in the year.

Bob Dylan – Baby Stop Crying

You been down to the bottom with a bad man, babe,
But you’re back where you belong.
Go get me my pistol, babe,
Honey, I can’t tell right from wrong.

Baby, please stop crying, stop crying, stop crying
Baby, please stop crying, stop crying, stop crying
Baby, please stop crying.
You know, I know, the sun will always shine
So baby, please stop crying ’cause it’s tearing up my mind.

Go down to the river, babe,
Honey, I will meet you there.
Go down to the river, babe,
Honey, I will pay your fare.

Baby, please stop crying, stop crying, stop crying
Baby, please stop crying, stop crying, stop crying
Baby, please stop crying.
You know, I know, the sun will always shine
So baby, please stop crying ’cause it’s tearing up my mind.

If you’re looking for assistance, babe,
Or if you just want some company
Or if you just want a friend you can talk to,
Honey, come and see about me.

Baby, please stop crying, stop crying, stop crying
Baby, please stop crying, stop crying, stop crying
Baby, please stop crying.
You know, I know, the sun will always shine
So baby, please stop crying ’cause it’s tearing up my mind.

You been hurt so many times
And I know what you’re thinking of.
Well, I don’t have to be no doctor, babe,
To see that you’re madly in love.

Baby, please stop crying, stop crying, stop crying
Baby, please stop crying, stop crying, stop crying
Baby, please stop crying.
You know, I know, the sun will always shine
So baby, please stop crying ’cause it’s tearing up my mind.

Bruce Springsteen – Racing In The Streets

I got a sixty-nine Chevy with a 396
Fuelie heads and a Hurst on the floor
She’s waiting tonight down in the parking lot
Outside the Seven-Eleven store
Me and my partner Sonny built her straight out of scratch
And he rides with me from town to town
We only run for the money got no strings attached
We shut `em up and then we shut `em down

Tonight, tonight the strip’s just right
I wanna blow `em off in my first heat
Summer’s here and the time is right
For goin’ racin’ in the street

We take all the action we can meet
And we cover all the northeast state
When the strip shuts down we run `em in the street
From the fire roads to the interstate
Some guys they just give up living
And start dying little by little, piece by piece
Some guys come home from work and wash up
And go racin’ in the street

Tonight, tonight the strip’s just right
I wanna blow `em all out of their seats
Calling out around the world, we’re going racin’ in the street

I met her on the strip three years ago
In a Camaro with this dude from L.A.
I blew that Camaro off my back and drove that little girl away
But now there’s wrinkles around my baby’s eyes
And she cries herself to sleep at night
When I come home the house is dark
She sighs “Baby did you make it all right”
She sits on the porch of her daddy’s house
But all her pretty dreams are torn
She stares off alone into the night
With the eyes of one who hates for just being born
For all the shut down strangers and hot rod angels
Rumbling through this promised land
Tonight my baby and me we’re gonna ride to the sea
And wash these sins off our hands

Tonight tonight the highway’s bright

Neil Young – Like A Hurricane

Once I thought I saw you
in a crowded hazy bar,
Dancing on the light
from star to star.
Far across the moonbeam
I know that’s who you are,
I saw your brown eyes
turning once to fire.

You are like a hurricane
There’s calm in your eye.
And I’m gettin’ blown away
To somewhere safer
where the feeling stays.
I want to love you but
I’m getting blown away.

I am just a dreamer,
but you are just a dream,
You could have been
anyone to me.
Before that moment
you touched my lips
That perfect feeling
when time just slips
Away between us
on our foggy trip.

You are like a hurricane
There’s calm in your eye.
And I’m gettin’ blown away
To somewhere safer
where the feeling stays.
I want to love you but
I’m getting blown away.

You are just a dreamer,
and I am just a dream.
You could have been
anyone to me.
Before that moment
you touched my lips
That perfect feeling
when time just slips
Away between us
on our foggy trip.

You are like a hurricane
There’s calm in your eye.
And I’m gettin’ blown away
To somewhere safer
where the feeling stays.
I want to love you but
I’m getting blown away.

Lou Reed – Walk On The Wild Side

Holly came from miami f.l.a.
Hitch-hiked her way across the u.s.a.

Plucked her eyebrows on the way
Shaved her leg and then he was a she
She says, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
Said, hey honey, take a walk on the wild side

Candy came from out on the island
In the backroom she was everybodys darling

But she never lost her head
Even when she was given head
She says, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
Said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
And the coloured girls go

Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo)

Little joe never once gave it away
Everybody had to pay and pay

A hustle here and a hustle there
New york city is the place where they said
Hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
I said hey joe, take a walk on the wild side

Sugar plum fairy came and hit the streets
Lookin for soul food and a place to eat

Went to the apollo
You should have seen him go go go
They said, hey sugar, take a walk on the wild side
I said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
All right, huh

Jackie is just speeding away
Thought she was james dean for a day

Then I guess she had to crash
Valium would have helped that dash
She said, hey babe, take a walk on the wild side
I said, hey honey, take a walk on the wild side
And the coloured girls say

Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
Doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo, doo)
(doo)

Tim Buckley – Sweet Surrender

Now you wanna know the reason
Why I cheated on you?
Well I had to be a hunter again.
This little man had to try
To make love feel new again.

‘Cause there’s just a few things, honey
I’m not old enough to do for you. Ohh.
And they’re the things, momma
You just never care to show me. Ohh.

So this flim-flam lover boy
Found him a flamingo.
And his flamingo
Showed him how to tango.
And when they tangoed
It’d send their heart’s a ‘flutter.
Teased him ’till he’d stutter.
Made him so young and tender.
Sweet to surrender
And so sweet surrender.
In sweet surrender.
Ahh, sweet surrender to love.

But now you’re gonna go out
And get yourself
A reputation.
But I’m gonna have to show you
Where to start.
And then you’re gonna bring back
Your little reputation
And prove to me
What I could not prove to you.

‘Cause I was just too young at heart.
I’m just too cold, honey.
Just too hard to care.
Just too hard, ‘right
To surrender.
Surrender to love.

Sweet surrender
Surrender to love.

If we could
Just surrender
Love would heal the mess we’ve made.
So give it up, momma, ahh.
It ‘aint gonna be no good
It keeps goin’ ’round and ’round.
You hurt me.
Then I hurt you again.
All that’s left to do, ah.
Is give it up, Ahhhhhh,
No, no, give it up
And surrender, Ahhhhhh, momma.

Sweet surrender.
Sweet surrender.
Surrender your love.
Surrender love.
Ohhhhhh, Surrender momma.
Ohhhhhh, Surrender that love.
Sweet.
Sweet, sweet, sweet su-rre-rren-der, momma.
In to love.
To love.
To love.

Cale Jj – Don’t Wait

Don’t wait, don’t wait
Don’t wait for the good times to come
We got ‘em right here, we’re on the run
Don’t wait, don’t wait

Going back, going back
Going way back, back in time
Another place, another mind
Going back, going back

Walk on, walk on
Walk on straight ahead
Don’t look around, don’t turn your head
Walk on, walk on

Fly away, fly away
Fly away away with me
I never been so flying free
Fly away, fly away

Bye bye, bye bye
Please don’t ever say
You’re leaving me, you’re going away
Bye bye, bye bye

Doors – Love Her Madly

Dont you love her madly, dont you need her badly
Dont you love her ways, tell me what you say
Dont you love her madly, wanna be her daddy
Dont you love her face
Dont you love her as shes walkin out the door
Like she did one thousand times before
Dont you love her ways, tell me what you say
Dont you love her as shes walkin out the door
All your love x4
All your love is gone,
So sing a lonely song
Of a deep blue dream,
Seven horses seem to be on the mark
Yeah, dont you love her
Dont you love her as shes walkin out the door
All your love x3
Yeah, all your love is gone
So sing a lonely song
Of a deep blue dream
Seven horses seem to be on the mark
Well, dont you love her madly
Dont you love her madly
Dont you love her madly

Elton John – I Don’t Wanna Go On With You Like That

I’ve always said that one’s enough to love
Now I hear you’re bragging one is not enough
Something tells me you’re not satisfied
You got plans to make me one of four or five

I guess this kind of thing’s just in your blood
But you won’t catch me carving up my love
I ain’t no puzzle piece that needs to fit
If it takes more than me let’s call it quits

`Cause I don’t wanna go on with you like that
Don’t wanna be a feather in your cap
I just wanna tell you honey I ain’t mad
But I don’t wanna go on with you like that

It gets so hard sometimes to understand
This vicious circle’s getting out of hand
Don’t need an extra eye to see
That the fire spreads faster in a breeze

And I don’t wanna go on with you like that
Don’t wanna be a feather in your cap
I just wanna tell you honey I ain’t mad
But I don’t wanna go on with you like that
No I don’t wanna go on with you like that
One more set of boots on your welcome mat
You’ll just have to quit them if you want me back
`Cause I don’t wanna go on with you like that

Oh if you wanna spread it around sister that’s just fine
But I don’t want no second hand feeding me lines
If you wanna hold someone in the middle of the night
Call out the guards, turn out the light

D.O.A – Dead Moon

Into dark waters flow – bad dreams of long ago
Children who never knew – what doors would open to
Flights taking weary souls – life shakes of bitter cold
Love tears on golden shores – teenaged, no more

(chorus)
What made you take the trip
How could you go so quick
Out through the open door
I wish I’d loved you more
D. O. A.

Pure as the driven snow – innocence now quickly goes
Hard pressed between the folds – inside the overcoat
Warm hearts and homeless bound – beware the city sound
Lying there below the street – broken, hard and beat

In cries of angels fall – in time you hear them all
Each face a deeper down – each heard a highway sound
Bound for the twilight flash – in tears the blinding match
A moments flame now cold – I knew her long ago

Tom Waits – Temptation

Rusted brandy in a diamond glass
everything is made from dreams
time is made from honey slow and sweet
only the fools know what it means
temptation, temptation, temptation
oh, temptation, temptation, I can’t resist
I know that she is made of smoke
but I’ve lost my way
she knows that I am broke
so that I must play
temptation, temptation, temptation
oh, woah, temptation, temptation, I can resist
Dutch pink and Italian blue
she is there waiting for you
my will his disappeared
now my confusion’s oh so clear
temptation, temptation, temptation
woah, woah, temptation, temptation
I can’t resist

.

Okay, dang… just when I get to thinking I am a serious blog hack, someone comes along and declares I need reform. Perhaps it is time for an overhaul, after all… this month marks three years of AMRFP!

In the past three years we have talked about politics, love, religion, music, books, and movies. There has been social injustice, chaos and anarchy. We seem to teeter on the brink of disaster yet all in good humor and forced optimism because… what else is there? We obviously cannot pack up our things and relocate to another planet because no one would have us. We know we are the root problem and reason for disunity in the world but we cannot seem to eradicate this self-destructive urge. We are constantly bombarded with information, yet how can we decipher it, knowing which is accurate and which is merely bunk? Here’s another controversy…

arctic-non-warming-since-1958

My life has turned dramatically since I first fostered this blog on a whim three years ago. I set out to discover if there was any use in my attempting to write, wondering if I “had the goods”. I found my audience to be somewhat sporadic and the subjects I held near and dear to my heart less popular than the ones I thought to be frivolous, so therein lies the paradox. What I enjoy writing may not be what I am good at, what I am good at may be drudgery.

My most popular post to date has been; Songs to Play at Your Funeral from April, 2008, which I wrote based on what had actually transpired between my business partner and I one day during a light conversation on death. It has garnished twice the hits of the runner up; The Illegal Immigration Solution Conclusion, from June, 2007. While the latter post has had twice the exposure it has fostered less activity. I have posted poetry, short stories, a screenplay and the rough draft of my story, Shades of Hemingway. I have progressed (slowly) in my ability to add pictures and video (thanks YouTube) to my posts while trying not to use them in place of good (?) writing. And after three years, 340 posts, 333 tags, 96 categories, 1004 comments, 37,045 hits and 28,496 spam I am virtually right back where I started from, questioning my validity as a writer.

There has been one bright spot. Actually, the greatest reward I can think of has come on to me while doing this experiment. Like most things that we find to make life worthwhile it came unexpectedly, yet has been the difference between merely existing and living. She sits at my side right now, not realizing I am writing about her. My beautiful wife, Chantal.

I have proven myself by winning her attention, admiration and love. She has faith in my ability and confidence that one day, the world will see what she sees in me, though that confidence in myself wanes and falters. Through our love of writing; whether via our blogs, to each other publicly or privately, or in our imaginations, we have accomplished something that would not have materialized otherwise. We have become each others hero and fan club. We have become kindred spirits. Chantal and I are glorious. I have not failed as a writer, I have acquired a following of one, as she has found in me.

I am living in Canada now, which is quite the contrast from spending most of my life in Florida. The economy has put a strain on my ability to make a living through my trade and I am still struggling to adapt to life as a foreigner. But my beautiful girl has the utmost confidence in me so that is a hurdle I will easily overcome with patience. I am learning to accept that I cannot always have things my way. But I need to concentrate on making a living and right now it does not look like writing is the way of prosperity for me, at least not financially.

I started this blog in May of 2006 not sure of where it would go, how I would do or how long it would last. But I feel it has served it’s purpose, at least for a while. The archives will remain and comments will still be directed to me via e-mail, but I plan on taking a little hiatus.

This month, May 2009, is heading towards being my most active month ever, with seven days left it will easily accomplish this. The second most active month was back in November of 2007.

I’d like to think that on that note, it is a good time to bow out gracefully.

Thanks for reading Advantages of Mutual Respect and Fair Play…

there definitely are, you know.

peace.

JJ Cale

Roll On

Rounder

This one slipped by me a couple months back, and I’m glad to have rediscovered it.

JJ Cale has made a career of riding breezy, bluesy grooves, and he doesn’t change things up too much on the fifteenth album in a recording career stretching back to the early 70s.

His voice melds ideally with the roots rock, rhythm and blues, guitar-based music contained within Roll On. Cale’s vocal style is shockingly laid back and seemingly unaffected by the passage of years. This is no doubt because Cale never seems to be trying very hard.

Not that the album sounds lazy or undeveloped. Everything works to perfection, from the jazz-influenced percussion- much of it by Cale himself- to the impeccably tasteful electric guitar serving as the disc’s skeleton.

Roll On occupies the same shelf in my listening library as Mark Knopfler’s albums of recent years; it won’t appeal to everyone, but there are times when JJ Cale’s sounds perfectly complement the mood of a day.

Graham Wilkinson and the Underground Township released a new album on Township Records, Yearbook, this month that brings the best of Texas roots music to the fore. Graham Wilkinson has proven himself not only as a songwriter but also as an arranger. Some of the songs on this album come from earlier albums but here they are arranged in new and lovely ways. On the track “Ragamuffin,” Hayes Carll lends his voice and Lloyd Maines plays his pedal-steel guitar. “Let It Go” stands out as an americana roots jam and “La Briza” casts an easy groovy spell. “Boys and Girls” is a reggafied track that has a ska sound. On the strings laden “Ghosts,” a previously unreleased track, Alejandro Esovedo adds his voice to this rock n’ roll piece of art. Graham Wilkinson and the Underground Township and the boys at Township Records, including producer and bassist Wayne Dalchau, have done it again. And this time the album artwork and concept of the Yearbook make it worth getting the hard copy of this album. Get the digital album if need be but the artwork and music make this album a tangible item one needs to hold, see, listen, and appreciate. Like the old days before the digital single this album harkens back to the good old days of the concept album. This album, Yearbook, captures a year of creativity, music, and Austin vibes.

K’Naan the Somalian rapper dropped sweltering rhymes over fat beats on his new album Troubadour. The track “I Come Prepared” with Damian “Jr. Gong” Marley stands out as a powerful song and the track “ABC’s” with Chubb Rock is slamming. Chali 2Na Fish, Mos Def, and Adam Levine also co-star on this album. But K’Naan shines on solo tracks too. The track “T.I.A.,” which stand for “This Is Africa,” samples Bob Marley & the Wailers’ “Simmer Down” with heavy bass drops chopping the old rhythm into a new dancehall beat. The Somalian rapper shows his softer side on ballads like “Wavin’ Flag” and “Take A Minute.” I am looking forward to seeing the live show.

Hello again folks on this fine Easter Monday 13th April, well that’s Easter over for another year. Did you over indulge in Easter Eggs? I didn’t. But whether you did or didn’t check out this great short film which explains where those gooey little critters Cadburys Creme Eggs come from. Let me know what you think of it.

So on with the usual crap starting with a birthday. Today would have been the 64th birthday of Lowell George off of Little Feat, but sadly he died from a heart attack in 1979 aged just 34. He was born in Hollywood where his father became known as ‘furrier to the stars’ his Dad raised chinchilla’s to provide Hollywood’s biggest stars with fur coats! He was also a member of Frank Zappa’ Mothers Of Invention at one time. Lowell was one of the first along with Ry Cooder to bring the slide guitar into rock music. He also played guitar on JJ Cale’s 1973 album ‘Paris 1919′ (thank you for Rocky for pointing out my error here, it was in fact John Cale and not JJ Cale. I’ll put it down to my age and imbibing a few beers whilst writing this post! Apologies to all concerned, in particular John and JJ) He found fame as a producer as well, he produced the Grateful Dead’s 1978 album ‘Shakedown Street’. Little Feat’s name arose partly because of Lowell’s short stumpy feet. Here are the wonderful Little Feat with “Dixie Chicken” live at the Rainbow in London in 1977.

Lowell had decided to change his image with the aid of a Rasta wig

On this day in 1956 the UK Top 20 became a Top 30, how things have moved on since those days of 78rpm shellac discs when rock ‘n’ roll was still in nappies (or diapers if you’re reading this in the North American colonies across the big pond!)

Londonbeat reached the top of the US charts with “I’ve Been Thinking About You” which also hit number 2 in the UK. The band’s lead singer was Jimmy Helms who had a solo hit in the early 70’s with “Gonna Make You An Offer You Can’t Refuse” At various times the band or it’s members provided backing vocals for Paul Young, Godley and Creme, Shakespears Sister, Dead Or Alive and Deacon Blue. At one time they were also signed to Dave Stewart’s Anxious Records. My favourite Londonbeat song is “9 A.M. (The Comfort Zone)” click the title to hear it.

After Londonbeat's new spectacles arrived they realised what a spectacle they had made of themselves with their ridiculous headgear

And finally on this day in 2002 burglars broke into a house in Bexhill, Sussex, in England where they stole a hi fi system and a number of CDs. They left behind albums by Madonna, Robbie Williams (good taste then!) and Oasis (well as long as it wasn’t either of the first two albums that’s ok). However, this is the strange part, they did steal the owner’s entire collection of Showaddywaddy CD’s. Very strange indeed but let’s be honest Showaddywaddy are significantly more talented than Robbie! Here are those Showaddywaddy boys with their first UK hit “Hey Rock ‘N’ Roll” OK fact fans did you know that the first Showaddywaddy single was originally going to be “Sugar Baby Love” which was eventually taken to number one by the Rubettes. It still has the ‘bop showaddy, bop showaddywaddy’ refrain in the chorus

In spite of his innocent look the rest of the band could tell by the smell who had just farted!

A very good Kiwi friend of mine (hello Fraser) also had the misfortune to have been burgled a few years ago and his hi fi, TV and the like were all stolen. Along with most of his CD’s, whilst he had no Showaddywaddy CDs, well none that he was prepared to admit to anyway, the thieves left all his Joe Satriani CDs in his flat. I do like to listen to Mr Satriani occasionally, however we did tease Fraser mercilessly about this for a while. So Fraser if you’re reading this I’m sorry mate and here is Mr Satriani especially for you! (just click his name)

Joe was very proud of his acheivement of knitting himself a new guitar with those magic invisible knitting needles

Booker is known as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, record producer, and arranger, and is best known for fronting Booker T and the MGs. This is his first solo album in decades. He teamed with southern rockers Drive-By Truckers to produce an album that is raw and edgy, fun and innovative. And just to seal the deal, long-time Booker associate Neil Young dropped by to play blistering lead guitar on nine of the ten tracks. Produced by Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck, Rickie Lee Jones, Foo Fighters) and Booker T.

Roll On is JJ Cale’s first batch of new solo material since 2004’s To Tulsa and Back and comes on the heels of his gold selling 2006 collaboration with Eric Clapton, The Road to Escondido, which also earned him his first Grammy. Comprised of 12 new songs, including the previously unreleased title track recorded with Eric Clapton, Roll On finds Cale still in love with making music and passionately creating future classics that he’ll one day tuck into his very own chapter of the Great American Songbook.

Howdy folks-

You really should consider amending your Saturday plans to tune in to The Roots Music Project from 12-2pm Eastern Time on 89.1 and online at www.wemu.org. As usual, authentic new & vintage Roots Music is on the menu, but I will make a special effort to play brand new releases by JJ Cale, Gurf Morlix, Jorma Kaukonen, Larry Keel and more.

Also, don’t forget that our new friend, Jim Lauderdale plays The Ark in Ann Arbor on Sunday 3/15 at 7:30. We will play several songs by him to celebrate.

Sunday is also Grateful Dead bassist (and one of my heroes), Phil Lesh’s birthday. I will pull out a classic Phil chestnut at some point during the show I am sure.

Tune in, crack a beer and enjoy…

Maggie’s Farm
Blues Bands version på min första konsert 79.
It Ain’t Me Babe
I Shall Be Released
Känns lite som jag vill bli religiös.
A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall
Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum
Cool titel helt enkelt.
Lenny Bruce
Dear Landlord
Dead Kennedys gjorde ‘Lynch the landlord’. Alltså måste en landlord-låt vara med.
Stuck Inside Of Mobile With The Memphis Blues Again
Alla låtar som har Mobile förtjänar listplaceringar.
Shelter From The Storm
Helt enkelt en bra låt.
Bessie Smith
Åter igen en cool titel.
The Boxer
Bra cover, mycket bättre än orginalet.
The Ballad of Frankie Lee and Judas Priest
Ganska uppenbart, va? Judas Priest i titeln. Alltså är låten bra.
Subterranean Homesick Blues
Världens bästa video alla kategoier.
Baby Please Don’t Go
Kändes bara lite oväntad.
Mozambique
Dylan bästa platta och Dylans bästa duett.
