A sala de cinema que não tiver “Lua Nova” na estréia do filme, vai se lamentar terrivelmente.

Uma sequência menor que a de J.K.Rowling, 4 X 7, mas a explosão que está sendo a venda de livros, trailers assistidos, objetos com um mínimo de traços do título dos filmes ou rosto dos atores, CDs de trilhas sonoras, DVDs,  downloads… é absurda. Harry Potter ERA legal. Chega de varinhas e chapéus seletores. Agora você tem vampiros que não se queimam com a luz do sol e dirigem modelos da Volvo, índios-lobos malhados, músicas perfeitas na trilha sonora. AGORA temos a saga Twilight.

I first read this book when I was a wee nipper. The school I attended decided it might be a bit fun to host a Carnegie Book Club. Students would be asked to attend and rate the books which had been shortlisted. I was one of them and out of all the novels that year Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone was the one which I struggled with. To me, the first chapter was much too long and the story a little boring. It’s important to note that I decided to ignore it and hid it under my bed, never reading past chapter two; if I had, my ratings that year would have been much different I’m sure.

Fast forward probably ten years and in less than two hours I’m over half way through. Possibly it’s the re-reading, or maybe a growth in my attention span but third time around the book is a much easier read (N.B. I did eventually attempt to read it again a few years later and liked it a little more than the first time ) 

Overall Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone provides a strong and interesting introduction to the saga which has enabled “every child in the world [to know Harry Potter's] name” (p.15). Alongside Harry we learn about Gringotts, Diagon Alley, Quidditch and of course Hogwarts. We make new friends and long standing enemies and quite frankly it all fits together rather nicely as we’re just as new to this as him.

The only thing to point out is just how well structed the actual novel is. Maybe this is an odd thing to say but seemingly Miss Rowling spent many a day writing a novel where everything within it has it’s own place, serving it’s own purpose. The opening chapter introduces us to muggles and the fall of Voldemort without us, the ignorant reader at that point, knowing much about anything within the magical world. Similarily the insertion of the Mirror of Erised three quarts into the novel serves a purpose for the end chapter. It left me feeling that maybe this Harry Potter novel, the shortest of them all, was perhaps a little too fine tuned.

Despite this the story is fantastic and it will become a classic of it’s time, except this will be a classic children, and adults alike, will be reading for generations to come.

It was true that Jagang and those from the Old World wanted to end the world of Magic, but it could very well have been Alric Rahl and his descendants who actually delivered the world that fate. That was exactly what happened.

As the last wizard born of the line of Rahl, Richard, Lord of D’Hara, did not, as should have been done, re-banish the people of Bandakar, being a believer of the sacred principle that one’s life is one’s own and does not belong to anyone else, and so, by mingling with those pristinely ungifted people of Bandakar, the offspring being born with even that little spark of magic started dwindling in numbers. This ultimately began the destruction of the world of Magic.

Consequently, realizing the error of his ways and the futility to repair the mistake, Richard took those with the gift and the spark still left in them and went, as the Bandakar, into an exile of his own. Those still able to wield their gift managed to secret their location and mask their gift my never using their magic in the presence of the pristinely ungifted. This trend continued even after Richard, continued by his progeny and ingrained into all those born with the gift. Any child of a Rahl born pristinely ungifted was sent out into the world of those of the child’s kind to be taken care of and raised as one of them.

In a few generations, most had forgotten there ever existed a world of Magic while those with the gift as still lived mingled with the rest by acting as one of them, and maintained the secrecy of their existence. Thus started the secret community of Wizards and Witches.

Names changed, places evolved, people developed. Soon the New World came to be called Europe while the Old World was renamed Asia. Other continents were discovered. As communities grew, so did their needs and they fought amongst each other, as had the New World against the Old World. The two Worlds divided into nations, nations into counties and states, and states into regions, each country guarded zealously by those belonging to it. England and Spain and Russia and China, all these countries and more, sometimes united, sometimes at war, each hid within them, unknown to their citizens, their own witches and wizards living in a secret society.

More gifted were born, but their powers were lessening, and so the wizards fashioned them devices to channel their powers. These devices, called wands, became the only way in which these lesser gifted could perform magic. Once in a great while, a greater gifted was born, yet being nothing compared to the wizards of old. A few names of great renown among these lesser gifted were Gordic Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherine, Albus Dumbledore, Barty Crouch, Tom Riddle- better known as Lord Voldemort- and Harry Potter, all from England, from a city called London. All these people carried in their veins varying amounts of Rahl blood, and though they were all so related, they fought amongst each other, such being the times in which they lived.

Each country started their own schools to teach those born with magic to wield their gift, notable among which are Hogwarts, Durmstrang, and Beauxbatons. Each school had their own hidden place; At Hogwarts, children were taken to school by train each year. Both worlds- those ungifted with a few remaining but quickly decreasing people with the spark, and those with the gift- developed parallel to each other, each world bring to light some new technology to make life easier…

Now here we are, nineteen years later, nineteen years after Harry Potter finally defeated the greatly feared Lord Voldemort, when the world, thanks to his efforts, is finally safe from the dark wizard’s awful regime of fear and death.

Mr. and Mrs. Pursley, of number four, Drivel Drive, were proud to say that they were pristinely ungifted, thank you very much. They were the last people you’d expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn’t hold with such nonsense.

When Mr. and Mrs. Pursley woke up on the dull, gray Tuesday our story starts, there was nothing about the cloudy sky outside to suggest that strange and mysterious things were happening all over the country. Mr. Pursley hummed as he picked out his most boring tie for work, and Mrs. Pursley gossiped away happily as she wrestled her screaming boy Pudley into his high chair.

None of them noticed a tiny, brown owl flutter past the window.

When Mr. Pursley reached King’s Cross to take his train to work, he noticed a man with his children, crossing the platform. Mr. Pursley wouldn’t have noticed him was he not walking straight into the dividing barrier between platforms nine and ten. He expected the man would try to stop at the dividing barrier, but Mr. Pursley knew he was going too fast, with the trolley he was carrying full of baggage of the weirdest sort. Mr. Pursley stopped to watch this extremely unPursleyish scene. Mr. Pursley watched, careful not to blink in case he missed it- but just as the man reached the dividing barrier between the two platforms, a large crowd of tourists came swarming in front of him and by the time the last backpack had cleared away, the man had vanished.

Mr. Pursley was left staring open-mouthed at the dividing barrier between the two platforms.

Behind the platform barrier the man who had just walked into the wall slowed and came to a stop. A scarlet steam engine was waiting next to a platform packed with people. A sign overhead said Hogwarts Express, eleven O’clock. Behind him, a wrought iron archway stood where the barrier had been. This man’s name was Harry Potter.

He had come to drop off his children at the station with his wife. He wouldn’t be seeing any of them again till Christmas holidays began and they came home from school.

As the children boarded the train and it began to move, Harry moved alongside it, watching his youngest son’s thin face already ablaze with excitement at the prospect of joining school. Harry kept smiling and waving, even though it was like a little bereavement, watching his son glide away from him… wondering if he would be all right…

The last trace of steam evaporated in the autumn air. The train rounded a corner. Harry’s hand was still raised in farewell.

“He’ll be all right,” murmured his wife, Ginny.

As Harry looked at her, he lowered his hand absentmindedly and touched the lightning scar on his forehead.

“I know he will.”

The scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years. All was well.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
