New DJ mix,  inspired by the music and events of the past year.

1. Runaway – Dirty Cake

I had the pleasure of working with Marcos Carbal and Jaques Reanault aka Runaway on Diesel U Music Radio New York last summer and also managed to catch them DJ in San Fran and L.A.  I’m sure you are all familiar but if not they throw great parties in New York, They DJ together and they released some great house tracks over the past few years. This is from their latest E.P. on Mule Musiq, check out their label and party… on the Prowl.

2. Louis Chedid – Hold Up (Losoul Edit)

3. LoSoul – The Crush

This is an edit of an old French Chanteuse Louis Chedid, who seems pretty average except this bonkers track which almost sounds house anyway, this is exactly how I like and edit and am still busting out Losoul’s – The Siren and a zillion other tracks from the  ”Famous when Dead” Compilation series on Playhouse. So then straight into some more Losoul as I was feeling like something a bit warbley and bleepy but not Gyratory System who are equally as warbly and bleepy.

4. Omar S – Set if Out

I’m a big fan of both this and the 80’s proto house anthem Midway which is on the Metro Area Fabric mix CD. Was meant to see Omar DJ at the Sunday best party at the Yard in Brooklyn but due to mega climate change NYC summer stormy weather got stranded at the No Monkey or no Ordinary Monkey party. 5. Hell feat Bryan Ferry – U can Dance (Tim Goldsworthy remix)

I really like the original but thought that this version would fit a bit better in the mix. The video is directed none other than the very talented Jo Apps (SMD with Kate Moross) and can’t wait to see more of her work.

6. Daniel Wang  - Like some Dream

Daniel Wang’s  early productions were all based on Loft classics and featured a lot of samples which were all cut up entirely on tape even though it was the 90’s. This track features around 70 samples of old disco records and is totally hypnotic and an absolute massive banger from that 1 bar somewhere in the middle.  Here are the video for 2 of the samples.

7. Crystal Fighters – I love London (In flagranti version)

Pretty rawkus and really wanted to post the video, which of course has been censored due to scenes of a sexual nature and recreational substance use.

8. Pete Visti – All Night (Yes Maam) (eskimo)

Mine and Matt Waites summer anthem.

9. Bot’ox - Babylon By Car (Discodeine Remix)

French squared.

10. Jody Finch – Jack Your Big Booty (BHQ No Acid Vocal)

Classic rare chicago track re-issued on Let’s pet Puppies and given the 00’s update from Derrik Carter, this one goes out to Jack Savidge.

11. Joakim – Watermelon Bubblelicious.

Epic French piano house and great album released this year.

12. Housemeister – What you want (Siriusmo remix)

13. Discodeine - Tom Select – (La Horse remix)

Waiting for that Discodeine album should be big for 2010. La Horse is Ivan Shmagghe and Tim Paris and usually, when I put this on people looked very scared. I always thought it was quite euphoric hands in the air banger but it seems to have the opposite effect disturbing the dance floors of London. As a social experiment at an after party, I tried to find the most upsetting music and the original, Joakim and La Horse mix really do freaked the most people out.

14. Magnets – Charm Offensive

This is totally hot new  heavy electronic shit from Dalston 2010 so Check it out.

15. Brennan Green – My First House

Fave DJ in NYC, you know they always seem to play something that will never work outside of the States so the one time he dropped some bloody Beyonce or Mariah Carey under a smoke machine and green lazer of east London he totally went down in my books,  go to New York and it all makes music more sense. Seriously, the cities best DJ and producer and label matey and currently producing Arthur’s Landing (pictured)

15. Soft Cell – So (extended)

16. New York Gong – Jungle Wind(ow)

Got a remix from Sbtrkt of old old Goldie Track “Innercity Life”. I’m big fan of Sbtrkt (pronounced Subtract), seen him on a few remixes lately, this one though stands out. The original is such a seminal piece of music and any quick remix would just ruin the original, but you can tell this has been worked on, and turned into a seven and half minutes tribute to the original. I look forward to hearing more from him in the new year.

Next up is Joakim remixing the Friendly Fires track “On Board”. Yes this is another Friendly Fires remix, but this is a great remix, I just love it. This is given the full French house treatment and it sounds so good for it. You need to hear it,  just so bouncy and uplifting makes you happy to be listening to it.

Formed out of the ashes of First Day Back, the hardcore band they formed while still at school, Friendly Fires are Ed MacFarlane (vocals), Edd Gibson (guitar) and Jack Savidge (drums). They are currently signed to  XL Recordings (also home to Peaches, Dizzee Rascal or Sigur Rös, to name a few). They make razor-sharp post-punk that makes all the dismal, skinny jeaned ‘80s revivalists you’ve been hearing these past few years look like amateurs. Assured, short and ultimately sweet, Friendly Fires is a glib reminder that you don’t need much to have an all night disco party, and remind us there’s no shame in getting your groove on.

The trio now seems to be on the fast track to mainstream success – they’ve already released a handful of hit singles and toured around as far as America and Japan. Their self-titled debut album has just been re-released with a bonus disc including their new single “Kiss Of Life”, remixes by the likes of Aeroplane or Paul Epworth, and videos… Get it on iTunes…

I saw Joakim a few weeks ago on Debaser Medis, in Stockholm and I actually had the opportunity to give him a word before his act. The gig went terrible, since he followed Dirty Disco Youth’s maximal-live-act with a housy-minimal set that crowded out the dancefloor. Nevertheless, Joakim is a great remixer and this Friendly Fires‘ remix is huge. He does what FF should have done all along, that is filling the music with more “layers”, making this cute song a “you gotta be fucking kiding me (surprised face)” song!

Eu vi o Joakim há umas semanas atrás no Debaser Medis, em Estocolmo e por acaso tive a oportunidade de falar com ele antes de ele passar som. Correu terrivelmente, porque ele veio a seguir ao maximal-live-act do Dirty Disco Youth com um set housy-minimal que esvaziou a pista. Ainda assim, o Joakim é um granda remixer e este remix de Friendly Fires é brutal. Ele faz o que basicamente os FF deviam ter feito logo, que é encher a música com mais “camadas”, fazendo a música passar de gira para uma “tás a gozar (cara de surpreso)” !

Not too many modern disco tracks (electro) catch my ear – An earlier vibe came from Rival Consoles – via Rob Da Bank. This one comes via Creamteam.TV - Joakim.   A mild space jazz  vibe is present – that loops from an Axel Foley bump into sleepy choral pop into bunk ’soul’ guitar break  than back to the bindle for the big come down.  It’s artists like Joakim and Rival Consoles that have an obvious soulful vision present – looking forward when they produce a human R&B outfit or make a commitment to one sweeping hook per track. It all depends on their motives. But I digress.

The girl and the robot kan vara min favorit-pop-låt från 2009 so far. Föreslår att den som misstror mig pratar med roomie-Sanna då hon kan intyga att den under en (nästan lite för lång) period spelades ett antal gånger per dag.

Då min och Emelies reportageserie kommer handla just om de fantastiska sociala medierna kanske jag redan nu bör sprida lite credd över en av dessa. Twitter är en trevlig uppfinning. Det var just där jag för drygt en timme sen kunde läsa vad Robyn skrev:
