Your image. Do you have standard vistaprint template business cards? (I’ll concede is one step above

Your image. Do you have standard vistaprint template business cards? (I’ll concede is one step above not having cards at all…)

There are hundreds of free business card templates if you can’t design your own. Don’t take the one with the drop of water into the pond. You want people to remember what your card looks like, why its design is relevant to what you do. I’m not saying to shape the entire card like a tooth if you’re a dentist, but hey, that would get you remembered. People would know what it is when the see it in their wallet. They might even show it to friends – hey, that’s free advertising!

2. Your Email/website?

Is your email: firstnamebusinessname@hotmail.com? Is it long, hard to remember, or even worse, hard to spell? Is it unprofessional?

http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com/domains - you can register a website/domain address for under $30 a year. If you have any company, no matter how small, this can be beneficial in that it’s professional, and looks like a ‘real company’. Just make sure you find a domain that’s easy to remember, and appropriate for your purpose (i.e. .org for non-profit, .com for almost everything else).

If you need to go the free route at least make it something people can remember – like sharonsjobs@yahoo.com – not sharonsjobassistancehelpsite@yahoo.com

3. Your social networking profiles? You resume?

Do they look just like everyone else’s? Is it basically a bunch of job descriptions from various positions that have come together and look just like that?

Take my LinkedIn Profile as an example. It tells you that I’m unique. That I’ve got a wacky sense of humor, but accomplish a lot, and have an interesting writing style.

“Summary: You can pick my brain, if I can pick yours. Let’s work smarter, not harder.

Young brilliant dynamic creative overachiever with unlimited ambition. The sky’s the limit when it comes to my efforts to attain the impossible. I’m an expert at whatever I set my mind to, whether it be QA or making Wedding Cakes. I’m going to change the world, yes, even more than I already have. Before I forget to mention it, I have an amazing personality, natural knack for networking, and a hysterical sense of humor.

I started my first successful consulting company a few years back, designsdesigns.com which is steadily growing in three countries! I’ve edited a book (Journey Among Nations, buy it on amazon, check out the beautiful cover design, that’s my company at work!), written countless marketing campaigns, and designed corporate image makeovers.

My experience? I’m a talented wife, mother, city employee, job placer, recruiter, resume writer, fundraiser, project manager, program developer, and matchmaker to the not-so-rich-and-famous-yet happily married. I’m always open to new experiences.

Specialties: Brilliant copy writing, enthralling process contributions, policy making, ROI-guaranteeing guru for all Marketing needs.”

What has that gotten me you ask? Numerous job interview offers & lots of people I don’t know wanting to connect with me (some I do, some I don’t, I’ll go into who to/not to connect with another time).

I’ve heard other people say that LinkedIn is where you go when you’re looking for a job, a friend even said to me once, “Does anyone hire through it?” Well, I’ve gotten job offers through it, and I’ve personally recruited through it for hard-to-fill positions. But if your profile is generic or incomplete, don’t expect much. I’m not saying your profile has to be as out there as mine is, hey, decorum is in order when you’re looking for a job (which yes, you should always be doing). You never know when your current position will be eliminated, or when a better opportunity may come your way, if you’re open to it.

A lot of people do functional resumes nowadays, but I only recommend that if you’re hiding major issues or time gaps.

Resumes should be brief & informative, bulleted, clean style.

Use narrow margins to get the most on a page. For really senior people a 2nd page might be necessary, but chances are no one is reading it. If they have a masters or higher, or went to an excellent school, put education before experience. If it’s a BA or lower, then keep it at the bottom (unless from Harvard etc.).

If you graduated more than 15 years ago, or less than 2, I don’t recommend putting a year on the degree. If you have any college or advanced degree remove high school (again unless it was Stuyvesant etc.).

In addition to my graphic design portfolio, I will need to create a graphic design resume to outline

In addition to my graphic design portfolio, I will need to create a graphic design resume to outline my skills, experience, and education for prospective employers and clients. The most important thing to remember when creating my graphic design resume is that my portfolio is a separate item. I shouldn’t try to showcase my skills as a graphic designer within my resume by using fancy fonts, graphics you have created, page borders, or graphic page dividers. I should keep my graphic design resume simple, professional, and organized.

My graphic design resume should be tailored to showcase the skills requested for the opportunity or job offer that I am seeking. It is okay, and actually a good idea, to keep a stock graphic design resume on hand, updating it whenever I change positions or complete a significant freelance assignment. However, I should be prepared to make changes to the organization of my graphic design resume if it seems warranted by the opportunity I am seeking.

There are many things I should be sure to include in my graphic design resume. I should make sure I list all of the computer software, technologies, and skills I have acquired, my level of expertise, and how long I have been familiar with the skill, software, or technology. I should also list any certifications or degrees I have received.

My graphic design resume should also include information about my previous employers or projects. (This may sound obvious, but many graphic designers are not aware of what information should be included in their experience.) Any significant freelance assignments and any industry related work experience should be included in my graphic design resume. My resume should be geared to showcase my talents in the graphic design field.

My experience section of my graphic design resume should show the month and year of employment or the freelance assignment, and the month and year that the employment ended. My graphic design resume should also highlight specific achievements at each position, or ways that the work I did or the freelance assignment I completed benefited the company I was working for.

I must make sure that in addition to any educational references and mentions, that I list all of my academic and professional achievements, significant projects, awards, and certifications on my graphic design resume. Many graphic designers neglect to include specific information in this section of their graphic design resume.

Finally, the best thing I can do to make sure that my graphic design resume is perfect, is to proofread my resume. If I am not sure that I have caught everything, I will have someone else proofread it. If I submit a graphic design resume with errors of any kind, I will be labeled as not being detail oriented, and I will not get the job or project that I am applying for, regardless of my skills or talent.

Provo a spiegarmi.

No one needs to live on $0 a day – if you can write, and you have access to the Internet, at least not after your paycheques start coming in. They are expanding right now at http://www.mahalo.com and have spots available for their howto team to write articles, you click on the Tasks tab after registering and can try one Rush Week page a week till you get accepted to the howto team – this month they go for $10 an article and you can keep your page and curate them and get ad revenue from them also. To start earning immediately just register and go to http://www.mahalo.com/answers and you can start earning from 25 cents and up a question – no application required. Check out How Mahalo Works http://www.mahalo.com/how-mahalo-works . I could see writing an article maybe where you have to live on say $2 a day, or $30 a day?. For more info, there is a recent blog entry from someone who joined the howto team at Mahalo and is writing about how much they have earned, what it is like etc. http://bit.ly/QPxyG . P.S. I have a blog and the first 2 postings have links to over 40 job finding pages – mostly how to pages at Mahalo at http://helpfind.wordpress.com (just scroll down or click on the 2 first postings after my intro on the Recent Posts sidebar to go right there)

A couple of days ago I got a letter from the local jobcentre asking me to come in for a “Pathw

A couple of days ago I got a letter from the local jobcentre asking me to come in for a “Pathways to Work” interview in two weeks time. The Pathways to Work scheme is designed to get people of incapacity benefits (IB or ESA) and back into work. It is geared at people who do not have jobs and the support offered is all about work experience, improving skills and finding a job. For someone who already has a job but is just too unwell to work, this is obviously a complete waste of time.

The literature that came with the letter was even more frustrating. There were a number of “success stories” of disabled people who had successfully got into work through the Pathways to Work scheme. The disappointing thing was all of these people had got minimum wage jobs in local supermarkets, washing dishes in kitchens or working in DIY stores. There were no teachers, lawyers or accountants. No doctors, nurses or IT consultants. No one was in a managerial position. Everyone was in a basic entry-level role, with few prospects for career progression and no doubt earning very little. I know for some people, a job in a supermarket is a massive achievement, but for many it is a massive step down. Not everyone on incapacity benefit has had a poor education or learning difficulties. Some of these people are highly intelligent, highly employable and have been previously very successful until they became ill or disabled. Surely these leaflets are not providing a positive image of disability? The leaflets should be saying, “look, you’re disabled but that doesn’t mean you can’t be successful and get a great job”. Instead they seem to say, “Oh, you’re disabled so you are obviously only capable of stacking shelves in a supermarket”. It is as if disabled people aren’t worthy of aspirations and successful careers.

This poor image of disability is reinforced by the services offered. Improve your CV. Training opportunities to improve your skills and employability. Work placements and buddy schemes. Money for attending job interviews. All of these things suggest that disabled people aren’t employable and need all the help they can get to find a job. Disabled people clearly aren’t capable of thinking for themselves and writing their own CVs. It may be true that in the current climate everyone looking for a job needs help, but this all seems very patronising and demeaning.

The other impression you get from the leaflets was the familiar story that people on incapacity benefit should just pull themselves together and get to work. There was a real sense of the Government’s displeasure about people being on disability benefits. On the first page it states that Pathways to Work is a key part of the Government’s plans to get one million people off incapacity benefits by 2015. Is it really feasible that one million people will recover from their disabilities? In theory it would be great if one million people became well enough to get back into work, but to me, the answer is not Pathways to Work. The answer is improved health care; quicker access to therapy for mental health patients, shorter waiting times for knee or hip joint replacements, more research into treatment for conditions like fibromyalgia, MS and chronic fatigue syndrome. People need successful treatment and support that will help them to recover and manage their condition. Help finding a job or gaining work experience isn’t going to make them well. Yes, working can improve well being and confidence, but for many it is just not an option.

NO EMPLOYEES TO DO THE WORK. The flip side. Immediate work for anyone 13 and over with Internet access available now, no screening, no fees, work globally from home, own pace, more work than anyone can possibly do – at least 10 times more people needed in my section.

Why can’t we find people? Why don’t people want to work? Is it that the pay starts at 37 cents a question? Gosh, lots of them are easy -what did you think of this or that and give an example or a link to support it even are the easiest, or where can I buy such and such or how can I cook such and such? How to bake a cake, do handiwork around the house, knit, sew, run a business etc.

Has no one heard of us? Do they not believe it is possible? Yes it is.
Do you think you won’t get in? Yes you can.

You know, it never ceases to amaze me, the foolishness of our society. I could be missing something

You know, it never ceases to amaze me, the foolishness of our society. I could be missing something here, but it appears to me as though the trend among companies to now check credit scores and base hiring decisions on said scores is a tad misanthropic.

I feel that there are definitely companies where this is appropriate behavior, for example, credit agencies, banks, savings and loans, investment companies. These make sense to me. You (I) would want someone handling money who was successful at managing it.

However, for the rest of the poor distraught masses, I think it’s a shame to limit their (my – sadly, my credit is significantly less than stellar and, as soon as I make enough money to support us, it is one of my goals to fix that) ability to obtain meaningful (read sufficient to pay the bills) employment. It seems strange that there would be a deliberate effort to stop the population group most in need of a job to pay off their debts from acquiring the best paying job possible to encourage them to, in fact, do so.

I realize this is a simplistic analysis of the issue, but I do believe simple is best sometimes. The huge irony of the enormous fiscal debacle in the United States is that those who have the most so often deny access to the fundamental tools for positive change to those in positions of lesser advantage. I am not trying to say that people should not work for, strive for what they need. Rather, I am saying that additional obstacles should not be placed in the path towards financial independence. Just because one errs does not mean one should be barred from obtaining employment. It is becoming such a Catch-22 sort of situation. Ah well, I’ve entered the realm of the redundant now. Suffice it to say, I find this all intensely frustrating! I’ve said enough.

Things that make me go “Hmmm…” or “AARGH!”

Okay, first of all, I just have to say something about the Air France debacle: the plane disappeared

Okay, first of all, I just have to say something about the Air France debacle: the plane disappeared?! Are you kidding me? And now they’ve reported to finding parts of the wreckage. What a shit time to hear about this. I mean, I like flying, and I love traveling, but this just gives me the creeps.

In other news; I need to find a job in Switzerland. Can’t go on leeching off of Mom’s money. And it’s not a matter of wanting to get one. I need to get one. I want to know I can support myself—or at least be able to cover my own pocket spendings—stand on my own two feet. I want to be financially independent. I know the prospects of landing a job in Lugano is not very good, but I’m determined. Have to start working!

It is the story about “an outsider coming into a close-knit community and the effects that [he] has on the people, and the prejudices that are stirred up.”

The writer’s portrayal of the small town is grim, yet relatable: a chilly, impenetrable circle of homogenous Bretons who are more or less unmalleable in regards to their ways and manners with outsiders.

The viewers are introduced to Antoine as a catalyst, but the characters are stagnant, and aside from the gradual warming up on Yvon, there is no real change, which is the most frustrating thing about this movie. It is essentially a movie about a man fail: unpleasant and hopeless, an ironic twist on the film’s title, L’Équipier.

As a foreigner, an expat, an intruder, this film hits a little too close for comfort, and its message is disappointing and harrowing. I was secretly hoping for a more reconciliatory ending.

Obviously, this isn’t the kind of movie that I would have liked to see, but I can’t help but ponder on its accuracy. Why is it so damn difficult to immerse yourself into a small community? People who have never lived outside of their homelands, hometowns, they will never come to know this feeling.

I like traveling and seeing the world, and wouldn’t give it up for the world. But really, where is a place that I can say I belong to? Is the right to a communal citizenship something every vagabond has to renounce? Or is it just me who is floating in between countries and continents?

I leave you with Elephant by Damien Rice, a former favorite that I rediscovered a few days ago. Used to be a huge Damien Rice fan in junior high; such powerful melodies and strong—albeit de temps en temps senseless—words. And you’ve gotta admit the man’s got balls.

Financial as we go through the global economic crisis and downturn, our options some would say are increasingly limited as what we can do occupationally. I come from a different opinion and still believe we can do what we love. Therein alone will be the most successful and fully realize are innate potential.

Therefore free your mind and heart from the entanglements of fear and corporate agendas. Most corporations run like fear factories and are designed to keep you enslaved to them for life. They spew fear to ensnare your soul and keep you working for them and getting paid less than you’re worth.

True freedom inwardly and financially comes when you break out and stop being a conformist. Only then can you truly live your dreams and be fully happy.

The rare exception is when working for a company feels good and right to you. Then by all means do it and be happy.

Otherwise follow your heart to your promised land and personal inheritance in the earth rather than waiting for an employer to give it to you. You’ve got to make it happen for yourself!

If you are looking for a job and live in the Puget Sound area, you’re in luck: there’s a Job Club for you, and all you have to do is sign up and RSVP for your first meeting. We have clubs in Seattle, Tacoma, Bellevue, and Olympia, and a new one starting soon in Woodinville.

If you live elsewhere, start a Job Club! We will give you all the tools you need to start and run a successful Job Club, and offer you access to our blog, your own member pages (for posting resumes and cover letters), and all the latest job hunting advice and ob search strategies.

What do we do in Job Club? Simple:

1) Share resources
2) Network
3) Offer encouragement
4) Provide accountability

What Color Is Your Parachute? says that forming a job club is one of the five best ways to find a job, with a success rate of 84%—and that’s only if you use that method of job searching alone!—so we had better listen if we’re going to be competitive in this job market.

Listen, it’s a tough job market, and you’re not in it alone. Nor should you be. Wolves hunt in packs, my friend…

Hope you all can make it. (PLEASE NOTE: We will NOT be meeting at the Public Library, as previously mentioned.) Zak will lead this one. We’ll be doing our standard accountability exercise — telling the group what you do, what you’re looking for, how many resumes you’ve sent this week and how many contacts you’ve made — as well as resuming our work on interviewing skills.

I’d also like to discuss job search (ahem: job FINDING) strategies. Different from tactics, this is an open-ended question about how best to organize and conduct an effective job search. Do different strategies work for different people, or is there a “best way” and “worst way” to conduct your search? Is a buckshot approach favorable to a rifle approach (in other words, sending out resumes en masse, as opposed to careful targeting and personal attention to each company)?

If Ben Marsh shows up, we’ll let him talk a bit about his recent success, and his offer to fellow Job Club members (see previous post).

Don’t forget to RSVP at our Meetup site. See you Wednesday!

Sometimes, you just have to give your friends the chance to rant. Please welcome guest blogger TB (or as I like to call him “caliboy”) as he shares his woes on job-finding in the post-recession economy.

I hate it when no one wants to offer you a job… yet people expect you to pull 5 years of work experience out your *ss. I’m pretty sure work experience comes from WORKING. Maybe I’m missing something. Oh yeah, a bachelor’s degree… right. Well I guess it’s my fault for messing around from ’02 – ’07 but come on… I’m sure there’s some way a former screw-up can find the job he wants. How can I get a decent job without a bachelor’s degree? How can I get a bachelor’s degree without going to college? How can I go to college without getting a loan? And even with the loan, I still need money. And how can I get money without a f*ckin job? *(Excuse the language… very pissed off here).

Monster.com and Careerbuilder.com seem to cater to the bachelors/ 5 yr work experience crowd and every job agency I called said they can’t help me because my work experience is very random and all over the place.

Maybe moving to the East Coast was a bad idea…although I was talking to some friends in California and they were saying the job market is terrible over there as well. I’m guessing its like this everywhere. All I can do is sit back with a 24 pack of Yuengling and wonder where it all went wrong. Visions of standing at an intersection with a cardboard sign asking for spare change are starting to seem like a disturbing possibility.

Can’t give up…

Since I lost track of my 101 things to do, I revisited the list and have decided that this week I will….go without booze! It should will work because I’m sick. I’m making the start time at 10pm Saturday, because this Saturday night I will be drinking with some amazing friends. Therefore, I can cross another item off my list!

Lately I have been in the dumps due to not being able to find a full time job doing what I got my degree in. To top things off, our landlord has not contacted us regarding her bankruptcy status, so we are still unaware as to when we will be without a place to live. Today, there was a creepy looking man in a very old oldsmobile taking pictures of the house. What this means for us, I have no idea. All I know, it that the situation is stressful and I am tired of worrying about our future living status.

The only good thing about this month has been the result of election night. I’m hoping that this change will bring the economy up, enabling me to find a job, buy a house and start my happily ever after…

Hoe?

Intake

Finding a new job or career for an executive position can be quite difficult. Even more, when you ar

Finding a new job or career for an executive position can be quite difficult. Even more, when you are left alone to find companies that are hiring. Sure, there are places like Monster or CareerBuilder that have lists of positions available, but the problem with this is that tons of people are gunning for those positions. Your best bet is working with a professional recruiter or executive search agent.

These people do all the job searching for you, which makes it easier. Companies hire these recruiters or headhunters to find qualified people for their business. These jobs aren’t open to the general public; the percentage of getting a phone call from an eager employer is high.

Recruiters are in the business to find the best potential employees to “sell” to their clients. They are trying to make good with their clients by giving them someone that has the skills and capabilities they are looking for. Keep this in mind; an executive recruiter is in no way obligated to contact you about a position.

Their job is to find the best fit from the applicants in their database with their clients. Finding a recruiter that specialized in the field you seek to find employment in is very important. Not only will you be putting yourself in a targeted job hunting position, but you will get a job that suites your needs as well.

Be sure to always investigate the recruiter you are looking to use. By not wasting your time on ones that lack good services or clients, you will save yourself the trouble of filling out an application. Using sources and reviews, like this one, you will be able to narrow down the best executive recruiters. Another option is to check out their website, many should carry one, if not, by calling them, this will help find out more information on their company’s history, experience, and clients.

Another good source to find good recruiters is by asking people in your network. Some might have gone through a recruiter that got them their job and would give you a great example in that they get people hired. Also, you may want to call the employers you want to work for and ask their HR department what headhunter service they use. There is nothing like getting some inside information on how to quickly get hired by that company.

Once you do apply with a recruiter, all the work is done by them. They contact their clients and if a match is found, they will contact you and offer the position to you. You have the choice of accepting the position or holding off for a better one.

In Summary

Recruiters do all the leg work from finding you a job and making themselves look good to their clients. Keep in mind that when using a recruiter you aren’t being charged for anything, these services should be free. If you are being charged by anyone, than they are just going to sell your information. Not a recommendation I give you.

You can find a great recruiter firm, which I have used personally, by heading over here. They are exclusive to job positions that earn more than 65k per year.

Best of Luck in your job search.

When hunting for a job, there are important things you must know that will help you.

1) Fire … ready, aim. Do not start by sending out resumes before you have targeted you ideal job. Always think before sending out resumes.

2) It is important to never offend an interviewer, even if he/she are younger than you. This means that you should never address the interviewer by his or her first name, until they tell you that you can. For example, “You can call me Jack,“ or the equivalent. Remember to address the interviewer formally.

3) Keep your private life…well, private. Don’t address anything personal in a resume or in an interview, unless told so. This helps in not prejudging you.

4) Winging it. “One of the biggest turn-offs for a hiring manager is when a candidate they are interviewing has not done the research necessary to understand both the position and the company they are applying for,” says Kip Hollister of Hollister Inc., a New England staffing firm.

5) Dressing for success. Don’t show up to an interview dressed up to sexy, casual, with too much jewelry, or cologne. Now what the position asks for and dress accordingly.

These few tips should help you in landing that all desired job you are looking for.
