var _gaq = _gaq || []; _gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-26112785-1']); _gaq.push(['_trackPageview']); (

  var _gaq = _gaq || [];
_gaq.push(['_setAccount', 'UA-26112785-1']);
_gaq.push(['_trackPageview']);

  (function() {
var ga = document.createElement(‘script’); ga.type = ‘text/javascript’; ga.async = true;
ga.src = (‘https:’ == document.location.protocol ? ‘https://ssl’ : ‘http://www’) + ‘.google-analytics.com/ga.js’;
var s = document.getElementsByTagName(‘script’)[0]; s.parentNode.insertBefore(ga, s);
})();

One of the things I found very perplexing about my job loss was the isolation I experienced. When I was working, my job consumed my day and I was totally absorbed by the customer interfaces and discussions with peers. When my job went away, so did the majority of my social interaction. I found myself in the house with Chester and Ms. Kitty, our dogs, and their conversational abilities are very limited. The quiet time was great for the first few days while I festered about the job loss. After that, it was very disturbing.

In that isolated situation, one starts to question their identity and possibly their sanity! Each person must find their own solution to this dilemma; I turned to writing a journal. I used a spiral notebook and started to record my days and came up with a to-do list to keep me occupied. It partially filled the void, but still did not provide human interaction. There are many alternatives to gain a human voice.

Not to advertise, but Wal-Mart is a wonderful place to be around people. Just grab a buggy and walk up and down the aisles. It may surprise you to find many people you know walking around with their buggies also! Calling a friend or relative is another quick remedy; they will probably be happy to hear from you. This is also a good time to start your networking strategy.

Networking is not all that complicated. Just think about the people you have associated with in the past and give them a call, email or short written note to establish contact. I would not suggest opening your communication with “Hi, Joe. Just a note to tell you I am out of work and need some leads.” Always start a communication with a social statement such as “Hi Joe, haven’t seen you in a while, how are things with the family.” When Joe responds, then you can state you are out of work and would appreciate any information about openings in your field. In another post, I mentioned the book Never Eat Alone by Keith Ferrazzi. Although some of the tactics are a little beyond my style, it is a good reference. Your family is another part of networking. Let them know you are looking for work (and not looking for a handout). Last but not least, you must be on a social network such as Linkedin. It is not sufficient to just sign up, you must participate. If nothing else, it will make you feel less isolated. Never say anything bad about previous employer(s). First of all, nobody wants to hear it, and most importantly, everyone, including potential future employers, will read it. Look at some of the profiles that already exist and then complete your profile.

Don’t let the feeling of isolation overwhelm you. I believe this feeling is closely associated with the grief cycle that we experience when any major loss occurs and that means you just need to work through it with a little help from your friends.

One of the big hits of losing your job is that you will lose not only your pay, but your health bene

One of the big hits of losing your job is that you will lose not only your pay, but your health benefits. Well, that is almost true. When you are released from your job, you may qualify for COBRA benefits. If that sounds like a snake, it certainly is, because it allows you to have the same health coverage you just lost…but usually at a significantly higher price. The good thing is that you at least have coverage. By the way, COBRA is an acronym for Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act and if you want more information about it, click here..

If you choose not to go with COBRA, there are alternatives. Kiplinger (www.kiplinger.com) suggests trying alumni or professional groups to see if they provide any type of group coverage, and if that does not fit your situation, then try calling local insurance companies or visiting ehealthinsurance. Also, if you are a veteran, try the closest Veteran’s Administration hospital. Normally, they charge based on your ability to pay.

Having no insurance can be financially catastrophic if you have a severe health issue and it is a gamble to have none. The recommendation is to obtain insurance if you can, but don’t panic if you cannot. Try staying as healthy as possible by developing a regular exercise routine and maintaining a proper diet. Both are equally as important in keeping you physically and emotionally fit.

Moral of the story…try to find insurance if possible, but it is not the end of the world if you cannot.

Choosing a career that you enjoy is very important but it can be hard figuring out what area of work

Choosing a career that you enjoy is very important but it can be hard figuring out what area of work you will enjoy can be a life-long task. But by taking a few psychometric tests you can figure out the career for you

Since most people spend a majority of their life on the job, choosing a career that you actually enjoy is very important for a happy and fulfilling lifestyle. Choosing a career that does not suit your personality can lead to confusion, unhappiness and boredom. People seek to find a career that best suits their natural traits and talents. When your work lets you realize your true potential and utilize your talents to the fullest, only then can you be satisfied with your career.

Psychometric Tests

Large corporate companies and businesses around the world hire employees by conducting personality tests as they measure skills, abilities, values and interests. These tests determine one’s aptitude for a certain type of career and even mention the right job that suits an individual’s personality. They determine the personality type; whether you are outgoing or reserved, realistic or imaginative, logical or sensitive, organized or spontaneous.

Personality Tests Help:

Match individuals to career interests

Improve employee communication

Increase team effectiveness and productivity

Reduce workplace conflict

People understand themselves and others

How A Psychometric Test Works

An informal series of questions is prepared and a team of experts analyzes the test results. They examine different personality aspects to form a personality profile. This profile is then discussed within a group, comprising of a panel of psychology graduates and career advisors. The best career choice is made according to the personality type and a detailed report is declared in front of the candidate.

There are a variety of tests that measure your intelligence and skills and assess your ability to succeed in a career. Some are more complex as compared to others. Some might be free of cost or may charge a nominal fee. The tests range from a five-minute color test to an hour-long complete personality test.

Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI): This is the most important tool that helps to assess a personality type and explore career options. A fee is charged for conducting the test. It is fast, secure and confidential.

Career Key: This is an online assessment tool that helps people make the best career choice.

Keirsey Temperament Sorter: This tool helps discover what type of temperament you possess and tells if you are an Artisan, Guardian, Rational or Idealist. They also charge a small fee for conducting the test.

Princeton Review Career Quiz: A series of questions are answered and accordingly, the best career choice is determined. They estimate your personal interests and usual styles. Registration is necessary for getting the results.

Strong Interest Inventory: This tool helps to match your interest with a professional career.

The results of these tests give a fair indication of an individual’s personality and should not be relied on as absolute. The examiners analyze the personality profile based on the answers. Taking a few personality tests can acquaint you with new career options that might not have been considered before.

These instruments help evaluate your personality type and explore new career options. A proper match between your job and your personality plays a major role in ensuring job satisfaction. Personality tests will direct you to a profession that will best compliment your personality.

The initial loss of a job is totally overwhelming for most people. If you have that feeling of bein

The initial loss of a job is totally overwhelming for most people. If you have that feeling of being ripped open inside, it is okay and very normal so do not run to the therapist at this point in time! I do, however, believe several things should be done at this stage of your job recovery. First, I would suggest developing a positive mind-set that allows you to move forward. Secondly, looking at your financial situation will help you understand how long you can stay with your current debt load. Next, searching for all available resources will help you set up alternative solutions, and finally, establishing a professional network that will allow you to reach out to the world. Let’s look at each of these individually starting with mind-set.

As we discussed before, each person handles change in their own unique way. Understand that you will go through the grief cycle and may experience some very uncomfortable emotions; keep in mind that all this is normal. From my own experience and after talking with others, I suggest that you initially take a day off before trying to solve your crisis. Sometimes it is difficult to just lay back when we think there is a dire emergency and we must find a job immediately…SLOW DOWN! The process of finding a job, in most cases, takes a while. Also, consider what is taking place in your thinking. After losing my job, I felt a great deal of hurt and anger because I felt I had given more than my share of flesh to the company. That is not the mind-set that will attract an employer. Take some time to reflect on the circumstances of your job loss. An attorney recommended that I take a couple of days and reflect, taking notes and trying to remember what happened. This exercise allows you to understand the role you played in your job loss as well as that of your employer. Hmm, hard words to hear that you played a role, huh. It is very important to understand the scenario that played out so that you can learn from it. By the way, my couple of days turned into almost three weeks. Once you understand what happened, and accept it, then you can start to build a positive mind-set to move forward. I had a friend provide some really good advice. He stepped very close to me, looked me in the eye, and said, “You will be okay.” I now offer that advice to you, be patient with yourself. While we are developing the ability to think straight, let’s take a look at our finances.

When I lost my job, my biggest worry was whether I could survive without losing everything I owned and I am not going to sugar coat this because it is a very real. Hopefully, your company paid you for remaining vacation days and at least two weeks severance. In some cases, such as gross misconduct on the job, severance pay may not be awarded. I know this is hind site but having a reasonable balance in your bank account is helpful as well. With that said, I would approach your financial situation with a pad, pencil and calculator (if needed). Make three columns on your pad, one for cash, another for income, the other for expenses. In the Cash column, list all readily available sources of cash and the amount that is available. In the Income column lists all sources of net monthly income (the amount on the check) that are available. Finally, in the third column, list all of your monthly expenses. Total all columns and let’s do some analysis.

1. Subtract the Expense Total from the Income Total — if the result is a negative number continue to step 2.

2.Divide the Cash column by the result of step 1 — The result will indicate how many months you can survive with your current Cash and Income. For example, if the Expense Total was $1000 and the Income Total was $200, the result would be ( -) $800. If you had $2400 Cash Total, dividing would yield 3, or 3 months before the cash runs out.

If step 1 was a positive number, congratulations!

Some other financial hints and tips:

Drop your monthly payments to the minimum payment until you have a job

Minimize expenses — make your own coffee, cook at home, stop shopping for non-essentials

Check all resources for potential income

The last bullet leads us to the next consideration for our recovery and that is available resources. This list is not all inclusive but provides a starting point.

State Unemployment Office – Apply for unemployment benefits as soon as possible. I had never applied for unemployment benefits and felt too proud to do so in the beginning of my recovery. Best advice, get over it and apply. The process varies from state to state with some applications being online and others requiring a face-to-face interview. Check with your local unemployment office for details. Apply soon because there is sometimes a waiting period before benefits begin. Also, be aware, that based on your reason for dismissal, unemployment benefits may not be allowed. Usually, benefits are denied in cases of gross misconduct on the job. In addition to cash benefits, unemployment offices also have information regarding local jobs and job fairs and some have their own job boards where a resume can be posted. We will talk more about this later when we discuss resumes. The unemployment office can also guide you to educational opportunities if you need to retrain.

Legal Assistance — If you feel you were wrongfully terminated, seek the advice of an attorney. I am not an advocate of law suits but if you have a legitimate claim following through could prevent an employer from treating another employee badly. Most attorneys provide a free one-hour consultation that allows them to evaluate the case. They will either ask for a fee to proceed, or, if they think the case is solid, they will accept a percentage of the settlement; 30% is customary.

Life Coaches — If you just cannot get moving, a life coach can help. These professionals, look at your current situation and then talk to you about where you would like to be and from the gap between the two, they develop an action plan for you. If you choose this alternative, get references and look for a coach that is certified or has years of successful experience .

Friends and family — I hate to say it, but sometimes this is the least rewarding resource. I found friends did little to help and some of my “friends” disappeared once my J-O-B disappeared. Family can be the same way except that usually they have your best interest at heart…they just do not know what to tell you. I will emphasize that if you have a significant other, you MUST fully communicate with them. They are going through the same emotional roller coaster that you are riding. Bottom line, friends and family provide a great support group for comfort but may or may not be able to help you in other ways. What you really need is a good professional network.

Networking is something we often neglect when times are good; that is a mistake. Networking is not the same as having friends over to watch the weekend game. Networking should be planned and take into consideration which companies and people can provide the greatest benefit to you. This may sound like manipulation but it is not and here are some recommendations:

Join social networks such as LinkedIn and Facebook. These social media provide exposure to the public and should be approached professionally…in other words, do not go on a social network and talk about how badly your company treated you. Instead, plan your approach. Think about your “brand”; how you want to be perceived by the public. LinkedIn and Facebook can both be used to showcase your skills and many examples are available; take some time to browse these sites.

Use professional organizations. If you are a member of any professional organizations, take the time to go to the meetings and let people know you are looking for work. Most professionals understand they could end up in the same situation you are facing and are more than willing to help.

Check local newspapers and community websites for job fairs. I live in the New Orleans area and we have http://www.nola.com that provides much local information.

Tell everyone you know that you are looking for a job. Sometimes this ends being a pride thing but again, get over it. Each person you know, knows someone else and they know someone else. One of those people may be looking for a service you can provide.

Keith Farrazzi wrote “Never Eat Alone” that describes some ways to establish a network. Although some of his suggestions are too elaborate for my tastes, the book offers some good advice. The point is to learn to network and never stop.

I do not want to under emphasize family and friends in this discussion of networking because they provide an irreplaceable source of personal support. Nurture your friendships and allow your friends and family to help you if they offer. While your family and friends support you personally, get moving on your professional networking, because it will more often connect you to companies and jobs.

A job loss is a major crisis but in most cases, not an emergency situation. Take the time to level your thinking, evaluate your finances and resources. Establish a professional network if you do not have one in place and reach out to family and friends. Remember, no matter how dire the situation appears to be, you are the same person you have always been and you will get through this. Closing the door on the event of your job loss is essential. Until that is performed, it is extremely difficult to see the door of opportunity that will open for you. After all, that is what we are doing, finding the open door.

Have you ever been terminated from your job, better known as fired, let-go, released? Losing a jo

Have you ever been terminated from your job, better known as fired, let-go, released? Losing a job, for whatever reason, is believed to be one of the most stressful life events one can experience. It rates right up there with divorce or the death of a loved one. Not only is job loss a stressful event but it affects the practicality of life as well; Maslow’s hierarchy of needs (1) gets slammed with all the support stages in jeopardy!

When a major change such as this occurs, we pass through a series of emotional stages called the grief cycle. Wikipedia (2) describes the Kübler-Ross Model, commonly known as the The Five Stages Of Grief, with the following stages:

Denial — This cannot be happening to me!

Anger — How dare they terminate me!

Bargaining — If I can just hang on for a few weeks, I will be okay.

Depression — I cannot find a job, I might as well declare bankruptcy and be finished with it.

Acceptance — It is going to be okay. I will survive this.

People handle this cycle differently based on their unique personality. Kübler-Ross states that all stages may not be experienced, nor will they necessarily occur in the order above. She also stated that a person would experience at least 2 of the stages. The point is to be aware of yourself and understand that you will probably be on an emotional roller coaster until the last stage, Acceptance, is achieved.

Once you accept the fact that your old job is gone, it is time to move on, to close the door on things as they were and look forward to Finding the Open Door that is in front of you. Prepare yourself for that event and anticipate the excitement and joy it will bring. We will discuss short-term actions to start down your path in the next post.

Get ready for an amazing alternative job hunting secret! If you’ve been in the job market rece

Get ready for an amazing alternative job hunting secret! If you’ve been in the job market recently, you already know it’s tough. Not because there aren’t excellent job opportunities out there. But because employers’ expectations are so much more demanding.

Employers want you to come in prepared to demonstrate that you’ve done your homework. They expect you’ve taken the time to learn about their organization and its goals. They also require that you show very specifically how you can make a contribution to the company’s bottom line.

The purpose of an alternative job hunting secret is to come at the job market from a totally different perspective. For example, you learn to see job search from and the employer’s point of view. When you do, then you’ll also appreciate discovering the huge advantage you have when you do your homework and you come to a face-to-face meeting or interview armed with critical insider information.

You are ready to implement one of the most powerful and exciting alternative job hunting secrets around. It’s called “job creation!”

That’s right! You can actually create a job for yourself on the spot. Here’s what to do (after you’ve done your homework):

1. List in writing the specific areas within the company where you bring something unique to the table. This is not a review of your work history. Indicate the specific department, products, services, etc. within the organization where your proposal would apply.

2. Send an email or letter to the decision-maker who would have an active interest in the kind of proposal you wish to present. Do NOT ask for a job. Rather, briefly outline the specifics you bring to the table for solving a certain problem, or contributing to growth, or opening up new doors for the company, etc. Then ask to meet for a discussion of your ideas or proposal. Indicate you’d like to call shortly to set up such a meeting.

3. Prepare a “Bio-Action” resume specifically designed to back up your alternative job hunting proposal.

4. Do NOT go in for an interview, but rather to discuss your proposal to see if there’s any interest. What’s exciting about this alternative job hunting secret approach is that neither you nor the employer is under any pressure to make a job decision. An opportunity can emerge if you are good at showing the value you bring to the table. Once again this takes preparation–doing your homework.

When you approach a carefully targeted organization and the specific decision-maker who could have a genuine interest in you, you’ve dramatically moved the odds in favor of a discovering a hidden opportunity for yourself. And you’ve eliminated all the competition!

After a woman is diagnosed with a terminal illness, she decides to spend her last few weeks having fun and spending her life savings.
Queen Latifah demonstrates her loose, easy charm in Last Holiday, a remake of the 1950 comedy with Alec Guinness. Though at first glance it’s hard to imagine anyone less like Alec Guinness than Queen Latifah, they both communicate a world of inner thought with nothing more than a sly sideways glance. Georgia Byrd (Latifah), a department store employee, leads a life of frustrated desires–particularly for a bashful salesman from the outdoor furnishings department (LL Cool J, Deep Blue Sea). But when she learns she only has a few weeks left to live, Georgia gathers her money, quits her job, and flies to a swank European resort she’s always dreamed of visiting. Naturally, her new carelessness with money and fearless candor lead everyone around her–including her senator (Giancarlo Esposito, Do The Right Thing) and her former boss (Timothy Hutton, Ordinary People)–to think she’s a mover and shaker. Last Holiday unfolds the way you expect it to (dozens of movies and TV shows have similar plots), but Latifah and the capable cast keep it alive. Also featuring Alicia Witt (The Upside of Anger), Jane Adams (Happiness), and the ever-dependable Gerard Depardieu (Cyrano de Bergerac) as a passionate chef. –Bret Fetzer
