Starting a new job is an important and sometimes stressful event. It is crucial to make a positive impact and achieve some ‘quick wins’, but not rush in and make too many decisions/changes without consideration or you could ruffle a few feathers.

If you have a probation period when starting a new job and need to prove yourself before securing a full time contract, the first 100 days are especially important.

Starting a new job means getting used to a new culture, people and systems – a lot of change all at once. This blog, part 2 of 3, shares success tips.

1. Introduce yourself to as many people as possible
2. Ask advice
3. Invest time getting proficient at the firm’s IT systems and policies
4. Establish any ‘elephants in the room’ i.e. things that don’t get talked about even though they are obvious
5. Set yourself goals for each day, week and month
6. Get a coach to support you and make the first 100 days a success
7. Attend any free lunchtime sessions/social events to immerse yourself in the organisation to expose yourself to people
8. Ask everyone you meet what are the 3 best things about the organisation and the 3 things that if changed would take it to a higher level
9. Note the dress code and adjust yours accordingly
10. Reflect on the value you bring after the first 30, 60 and 90 days

This excuse reminds me of one of my protegees.One day I paid her an unscheduled visit.I met her singing a song she told me she had just composed.Both the song and the singer were absolutely terrific! They stole my heart away!
“Why, you sure have the making of a gospel music star! Why don’t you find a studio to record this and other songs that you have composed?,I asked. “Sir,I used to be a choir leader and lots of people have told me how good I am. But my problem has always been lack of capital,”she said defensively.

After a short pause she continued,”What is worse is that I have not been able to find a sponsor”.
“How much do you really need to record a demo CD?”, I asked. “I believe that would be the first tiny step that will begin your journey of a thousand miles”, I added.”One studio I went to not too long ago put the cost of a demo CD and a master CD at 120k.That figure scared me from making any further move,” she replied with frustration written all over her face.”Do you mind if I introduce you to a friend who owns a recording studio? I can influence him to record a demo CD for you at a fraction of the cost of recording at any standard studio,”I asked her.’”Ah ! That will make my career dream come true! Especially now that I am unemployed”, she responded with a big grin on her face. Without waiting for her to speak further I said,”Here. Have his contact.Wait until I have spoken to him. Then you can immediately go and see him,”I advised.
Two days later, I contacted my friend and told him of my protegee whom I’ve directed to see him for recording. I got his promise to record her demo CD at a heavily discounted price.Immediately, I called my protegee and asked her to meet my studio owner friend concerning her demo CD.She thanked me and hung up. Three weeks later my friend called to say he hasn’t seen her. I asked her why she hasn’t gone, she said she has been very busy with domestic work. Not offended I encouraged her to try and see him ASAP. About three months later,when I saw her, she said she had not gone yet.But that someone had introduced her to a philantropist who gave a check of #150k after hearing her sing”. Great! Now you can go to the studio and do your demo and master CD. And even do some mass production which you can sell at big churches. And, which can also open doors of live performances for you”, I said enthusiastically. To my surprise,she said she had almost finished spending the money. “On what?”, I demanded.”On feeding and other daily needs,”she replied. “When any other fund comes, I will surely invest it in my music career”,she said apologetically. Less than six months later, the same philantropist gave her #400k. An amount she spent ENTIRELY on another pressing family need.

Experience has taught me some basic truth about money. One of the most important of them is that a compelling VISION with precision has a way of attracting PROVISION or FUND or CAPITAL .In the case of my protegee,she succeeded in attracting provision because she had a compelling vision with precision.Yet, her vision still remained vision.Clearly, her problem was not the lack of capital as she was claiming.What then was her real problem? LACK OF CHARACTER not lack of capital. By this I mean, her vision was a wish not A WILL.

Well before you share yours with me, maybe I should first share mine with you. Marriage has taught me to always listen to my customers and target customers, if I desire to improve the quality of my service delivery and enjoy more patronage. On this particular occasion when my wife was ill, I was getting ready to sleep after a hard day’s labour. Twice she interrupted my sleep, complaining that she needed my attention and needed me to be by her side. She told me in detail how she wanted the attention. ‘Come closer to me. Touch my head. Feel what I’m feeling, and tell me soothing words. Then you can go to sleep’, she requested amidst tears. 

To me it was like speaking Greek. What I badly needed was my sleep and I taught that was what she badly needed too. Of course, I kept reminding her of this fact. Ignoring me, she kept on presenting the same request with the same words, in the same order. Out of frustration, I honored her request. Lo and behold! In a matter of minutes, both of us had dozed off. Think about it. Is this not how our customers and target customers behave?

Unlike our teachers in school, they are always willing and generous with the answers to the business challenges we face. But are we as willing to listen to them? I doubt.

What entrepreneurs don’t realize is that their customers and especially target customers know exactly the improvements they need to make for their businesses to enjoy greater patronage. What do we do instead? We are either too proud to ask them or too proud to listen to them or both. On the flip side, what has business taught me about marriage? That my spouse deserves the same treatment my best customers get from me. We look forward to sharing what marriage has taught you about business and vice-versa.

God’s kingdom is like an estate manager who went out early in the morning to hire workers for his vineyard. They agreed on a wage of a dollar a day, and went to work.  Later, at about nine o’clock, the manager saw some other men hanging around the town square unemployed. He told them to go to work in his vineyard and he would pay them a fair wage. They went.

He did the same thing at noon, and again at three o’clock. At five o’clock he went back and found still others standing around.

He said, ‘Why are you standing around all day doing nothing?’

They said, ‘Because no one hired us.’

He told them to go work in his vineyard.

When the day’s work was over, the owner of the vineyard instructed his foreman, “Call the workers in and pay them their wages. Start with the last hired and go on to the first.

Those hired at five o’clock came up and were each given a dollar. When those who were hired first saw that, they assumed they would get far more. But they got the same, each of them one dollar. Taking the dollar, they groused angrily to the manager, “These last workers put in only one easy hour, and you just made them equal to us, who slaved all day, under a scorching sun’. He replied to the one speaking, ‘Friend, I haven’t been unfair. We agreed on the wage of a dollar, didn’t we?

One of the rules of work is that your employer can only fix your salary not your income. Your investment intelligence level is what determines your income. “Whatever is worth having is worth working for,” says Andrew Carnegie. It is good to know how to work hard for money but, it is better to make your hard earned money also work for you. Ability to make money work for you is what is known as investment intelligence. And, your investment intelligence level is determined by the quality of your investment intelligence gathering

Lets examine one of such. The word “seed-time” suggests that only two things can be invested. Your money and your time. Two great investors, Donald J. Trump and Robert T. Kiyosaki confirm this fact in their bestselling book, Why We Want You To Be Rich. Therefore, before you invest your hard earned money in any venture, first find out how much TIME your investment partner- to- be has invested in the venture he wants you to invest in .

What is the proof he or she has invested TIME in the proposed venture? Experience.  What is experience within this context? Knowledge of what works and what  doesn’t. When time is invested in a business IDEA, that idea eventually graduates into a business OPPORTUNITY. Although, experience may not completely eliminate the risk factor in an investment opportunity, it is capable of reducing it to the bearest minimum. Just as it is not driving that is risky but an inexperienced driver, same way it is not investing that is risky but investors with zero or little experience in what they are investing in. One of the most successful investors of our time, Warren Buffet, had this in mind when he declared, “I don’t invest in any venture, I don’t understand”. So, rather than risk your hard earned money in a risky investor, please follow Elbert Hubbard advice: “the easiest way to double your money is to fold it and put it  in your pocket”.
