A very interesting article out of Milwaukee. Not every community can have a sort of Daddy Warbucks like these three gentlemen, but what I think they have really done goes far beyond a holding company. By consolidating not only the usual office space amenities, but the equipment and the skilled employees necessary for manufacturing, they are creating a new model for business incubators — one that has the potential to take that idea beyond services and applies it to the core processes of manufacturing.

I’m sure some people might argue that it would be better for each company to have its own employees, and perhaps one day they will do that. But I think it’s better to do this — to not only employ a few people, but to use that opportunity to help three businesses grow and get their legs under them. Entrepreneurship isn’t exotic, and it’s often just plain old hard work.

Of course, these three companies share a workforce because their bosses told them to. Could this work in a more conventional incubator structure? Could a typical incubator convince or coerce its tenants to share core staff? Or would that lead to a muntiny, perhaps even if the alternative were to close the doors? More to the point of my recent posts, is this an

In a survey by the National Association of Business Economics, economists expect the jobless economy

In a survey by the National Association of Business Economics, economists expect the jobless economy to bottom-out in early 2010, with a job turnaround to follow right after that. This was reported today, Monday November 23, 2009.

Funny is, how the Market Indexes all flew up today, largely due to this report. When we want to feel good about a “bottom-out,” let’s remember that it is on the heels of a recession that lost MILLIONS of jobs, and as of a month ago the economy still lost more jobs than before the crisis begun. Within the final handful of months before the pivotal September 2008 (the month Lehman collapsed), the economy lost a monthly average of approximately 150,000 jobs, whereas this past October, the economy gave up almost 200,000 jobs. My point here is that we are not yet in the vicinity of not losing jobs, and when we do get there, we will have too many people out of work who will certainly continue to drag down the economy.

My other point is that politically, President Obama and the Democrats are doomed with this job market, even IF the turn-around (i.e. job growth) does indeed start by April ’10. Just look back to Bush the First: in the last six months of ‘992, the economy gained on average 129,000 jobs (or 101,000 jobs in the six months leading up to the election, including October), yet few until today think that the economy was an issue for Bush to use for his benefit. In addition, at that time, the Unemployment Rate was in the 7% area, whereas in the final months of election ’10, Obama will be lucky if the rate dips below 10% percent.

All in all I am saying that economically for the nation, and politically for the Dems, today’s survey is not one that anyone should cheer.

Today I received my yearly overview letter of Social Security Benefits. They let me know what I

Today I received my yearly overview letter of Social Security Benefits. They let me know what I’d be receiving if I decided to retire at age 62; however, they also included what I like to call the “just in-case” clause. Like, just in-case we run out of money, a scenario that is not only possible, but also probable. The big date they gave for the storehouse of wealth to run dry is 2037.

It’s a waste of stamps to send me these letters every year. They may as well save their stamp money, pay some poor old person with it, and send my kids one notice in about 30 years saying their parents need money. Problems solved.

Anyway, I decided that I may as well take my retirement early before the well runs dry and my skin gets so baggy that I have to fold it into my swimsuit. So see you all in Tahiti. The second hut is mine!

Oh, wait.

I just checked on airfare and I think I’ll only make it to Florida.

That’ll do!

A cozy, long-standing arrangement for Japan’s mainstream media—one that has long irked foreign journalists—is coming under increased criticism.

Kisha clubs, most of which grant membership only to Japanese journalists for the biggest print and broadcast media in the country, are housed inside the agencies or entities that they cover. Club members not only have exclusive access to press releases and press conferences, they often coordinate news stories among each other (a practice called memo-matching) and prohibit members from releasing certain information. The emphasis is on group coordination, which stifles scoops or individual initiative. Foreign correspondents, freelancers, bloggers and other riff-raff need not apply. It’s been called institutionalized conflict of interest.

See these links for some recent observations about kisha clubs:
NYT, On the Media, Salon

For the government, it’s been a great system, allowing much greater control over the flow of information than in the U.S. But with the long-governing Liberal Democratic Party ousted from power last August by the Democratic Party, Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama’s new-broom-sweeps-clean approach has hit even the kasha club system.

Change usually comes slowly in Japan, especially when the government is involved. But the evolving nature of news outlets and the growing influence of the Internet on news media will force huge changes, even on Japan’s insular mainstream media.

This has got to be the fastest economic collapse and recovery in the history of the world. Just a y

This has got to be the fastest economic collapse and recovery in the history of the world. Just a year ago we had economic meltdown. Many people so much closer to the action thought that our entire banking system was going to collapse. They felt there would be runs on the banks and that faith in our economic system would be so poor that people would ditch the dollar entirely and begin bartering.

As it turned out there was a run on one bank, Washington Mutual. In just a few days they lost billions of dollars. Thankfully, most people weren’t paying much attention, so they didn’t lose faith. JP Morgan Chase came to the rescue and took over Wamu just in time.

Just a year ago, CBS had some serious liquidity problems. What’s more, advertising sales were way WAY down, and people wondered whether they’d survive. Here it is a year later and CBS stock has gone from a low of $4 a share to $12 somthing today. That’s a tripling of price. Not only that, but CBS is going to pay a DIVIDEND this time around. I think it’ll be to holders of record at the beginning of December. That’s usually how these things work. Seeing that the stats look good for CBS I went out and bought some the other day.

CBS is a good barometer of the economy because when businesses feel they can operate properly, they begin spending on advertising. Advertising drives a lot of our economy, and it’s also among the most fragile commodities sold in our economy. So, you just know that if companies are advertising, there must be some optimism out there for the future.

But what about jobs? Jobs always lag. A company is going to get on firm financial footing and then they’re going to get more sales and then they’re going to run their current employees ragged servicing the new customers before they’ll ever think about hiring more people. So, jobs are a long way off. I don’t see more jobs out there for at least a couple years.

But the economy itself? If you saved your money instead of spending it on an overpriced home, you’re now in a great position to take advantage of bargains. With our current deflation, prices are coming down on a lot of commodities. It’s a good time to buy lots of stuff. Heck, even gasoline is down. In SF last night it was $2.85 once again. So much for the Bill Wattenburgs of the world who predicted that unless we go nuclear we’d be paying upwards of $5 a gallon for gasoline. Ain’t gonna happen in a deflationary time.

And what about deflation? Is that good for us? Well, in the long run it means that wages are ultimately going to drop. We’re already seeing this. Today, clerk typists are making about $12 an hour. Fifteen years ago, clerk typists were making about $15 an hour. But, as our labor becomes cheaper we will begin seeing a lot of the jobs that had been offshored to Asia come back to us. I think we’re about to hit a job boom within the next five years.

Applying for jobs is an interesting experience to say the least… So documenting it should make

Applying for jobs is an interesting experience to say the least… So documenting it should make for some interesting reading… Should being the key work in that sentence.

The thing that has struck me in my long years of job applying is the importance of the cover letter. Its seems almost as important as the C.V itself. The C.V is too “facts and figures” and to be honest they will probably check your job history anyway. Maybe they’ll check your personal stats, see if they need a wheel chair ramp or something, In which case your chances of getting hired get slimmer..

The cover letter is more the creative component of the job application. It’s where you can tell them how awesome you are, what you’ve done and what you can do, achievements, accomplishments how many people your willing to step on/sleep with etc etc

The difficult and most important thing about them is tailoring them for each job application. You have to know what the company wants, which is easier said than done sometimes, then answer their needs within your own skill base. No mean feat considering what companies often demand.

Once you’ve got it down you still have to trim and edit it so that it’s the right length too. Not too long or it won’t be read at all, and not too short or you’ll be thought of as useless. Like the porridge from the three bears it has to be just right. And even then you don’t know if it’s any good. That of course is up to the reader.

There is also the language aspect to it as well. Keep it too informal and they’ll think your 14 but have too formal and they’ll think you’re a retiree. Of course this totally depends on what job you’re applying for; A university lecturer position would definitely demand a higher literacy level where as fast food place or video store could tolerate a more relaxed attitude. In general though a ’serious’ tone would probably get you further

There are only so many things you can control though. You may think your cover letter is smashingly good, but if whoever reading it doesn’t well your pretty much screwed. Your only hope being that someone more attuned to you reads it. In saying that it’s probably a good idea to get someone else to read your cover letter and its also a good idea that this person is of the same or higher intelligence level (and age) than yourself.

Now instead of making this post incessantly longer I shall now endeavour to take my own advice and write-up a cover letter for this cool job I found

ryan@huffingtonpost.com | HuffPost Reporting

As desperate Democratic lawmakers cast about for ways to create jobs from Capitol Hill, a 1970s-era jobs program is getting a fresh look.

Known as CETA — the Comprehensive Employment and Training Act — the program provided direct government funding to hire temporary workers. At its peak in 1978, it had created 725,000 public service jobs and shaved roughly one point off the unemployment figure.

A one-point drop in the unemployment rate — not to mention the ancillary benefit of hundreds of thousands of people having money to spend on other goods and services — would give politicians something concrete to point to before the mid-term elections.

“That’s certainly one of the options being discussed, the CETA program back in the 70s,” House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.) told HuffPost in a recent interview, when asked if leadership was considering direct government hiring as a partial answer to the deepening unemployment.

But skepticism abounds, both among Democrats and economists. There are much more efficient ways to create jobs — or prevent them from being lost — such as direct aid to states that would otherwise layoff teachers, cops, firefighters and bureaucrats. That doesn’t require creating a new bureaucracy, it’s just a matter of cutting the check.

“Most economists are not sure that [CETA] works as well as some other things that they think would be better, like infrastructure investment and assistance to the states, which helps them retain jobs,” said Hoyer. “In other words, if you’re creating jobs while the states are jettisoning jobs because they are under such financial stress, obviously you have a net zero [effect]. So you want to keep the state jobs and invest in creating jobs in the private sector.”

Aid to strapped states is one of the top priorities for Democrats, but conservative members of the party, such as Nebraska Sen. Ben Nelson, as well as potentially allied Republicans such as Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins, have fought to limit such assistance. Roughly $40 billion in aid to states was cut from the first stimulus package in response to conservative concerns about overspending. As a result, thousands of teachers and cops have lost their jobs.

With deficit hawks standing in the way of fully assisting distressed states, the CETA program becomes more politically attractive to Democrats. It carries with it the hope of bipartisan support, since there’s something in it for the business community.

The version of CETA being discussed by Democrats would be some type of public-private partnership through which the government would pay part of an employee’s salary, while he or she would train under and work for a private firm. The hope would be that the firm ends up hiring the employee with its own money when the government subsidy dries up, but in either case, the worker gets training that assists in the job hunt.

Business groups might have to lobby the GOP to get them to yes, however.

Michael Steel, a spokesman for Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) gave CETA the instant thumbs down. “American families are asking ‘where are the jobs?’ but out-of-touch Washington Democrats are more intent on growing government,” Steel wrote in an e-mail. “After squandering one trillion dollars on a ’stimulus’ that just isn’t working, they want to double-down: Borrowing more money from China and the Middle East to spend pleasing their special interest allies, and passing the tab to our kids and grandkids. Enough is enough.”

Nonprofit organizations with liberal ambitions could also benefit from the subsidized labor, and more government workers would be needed to prevent waste and fraud.

Indeed, abuse of the program would likely be one of the biggest problems it would face.

“The more money you put on the table, the more incentive you’re giving people to defraud it,” said Dean Baker, an economist with the liberal-leaning Center for Economic Policy and Research. Baker favors subsidizing businesses that cut down on worker hours. Such an innovative proposal would free up demand for more labor while mitigating the pain of a full layoff.

CETA, said Baker, would be better than nothing. “It’s certainly better than having people be unemployed,” he said. But he added that it could come at a big political price when reporters inevitably find some chump claiming to be employing his brother while splitting the government paycheck.

Requiring businesses to pick up a portion of the tab would cut down on fraud, Baker suggested.

A bigger problem comes in when you consider that employers, even in a down economy, are hiring some four million new workers every month due to turnover and attrition. It would be difficult for the law to prevent companies from taking a subsidy for hiring they had planned to do anyway.

“You’re going to hire someone anyhow,” said Baker, “so why not have the government pick up the tab?”

One benefit of the program is that the costs are predictable. Even if some of the money is ripped off, the government can limit its spending by subsidizing only a certain number of jobs. A million full-time salaries at $10 an hour, for instance, would cost $20 billion per year, plus supervisory costs. And even the money that’s obtained fraudulently is entering the economy. Unemployment benefits, after all, go to people who aren’t working (by definition) and have a stimulative economic effect regardless.

Walter Shapiro, who worked in the Jimmy Carter administration — the last to push such a public-works program — said that the earlier iteration of the program underperformed because it wasn’t bold enough.

“[T]he problem with CETA was not that it embodied Big Government, but that it was not big enough. CETA left behind no lasting monuments like LaGuardia Airport and the Hoover Dam, no evocative art like the WPA murals in post offices and libraries. The administration of CETA was lax, but almost all of its scandals were small-bore local corruption,” he writes for Politics Daily.

“Today, even more than in the 1970s, there is a moral argument for public service employment. While Barack Obama’s stimulus package was advertised as shovel-ready, a public jobs program would be people-ready. The societal waste and the wrecked lives from double-digit unemployment will leave scars that may take decades to heal. But what liberals should have learned long ago from CETA is that effective management matters — and that an ill-designed program can turn a laudable idea into a laughing stock.”

The moral argument for some sort of relief is being made with increasing fervor by progressive organizations. Last week, major liberal groups put out an “urgent call to action to stem the U.S. job crisis.”

The statement was signed by the AFL-CIO, NAACP, and the National Council of La Raza, among other groups.

Meanwhile, Republicans have put forth few ideas to create jobs beyond cutting taxes, so joining Democrats in backing CETA would at least give them something to tout.

LinkedIn is a relatively new website that seeks to combine the power of social networking with the job search process. The site allows you to connect with people based on your professional associations. On it you can connect with your friends, co-workers, bosses, and even colleagues at previous jobs. It also acts as on online resume where you can upload a profile containing your work and educational experiences. Once your profile is complete, you can begin searching for jobs posted by other LinkedIn members or companies. And employers looking to hire can also search for and view your profile.

One issue I have had with job search sites like Monster.com and Hotjobs is the amount of information you can display about yourself. To any jobs you apply to, you are just a resume and a cover letter. You have to condense your entire educational/career experience into a few pages of plain text. Employers get very little information on the other aspects of your life, and you have little opportunity to stand out from the crowd. Some people are able to figure out the secret to a great resume or cover letter, but for most of us applying to jobs on those sites feels like tossing a coin into a fountain and making a wish.

The great thing about LinkedIn is that it provides you with the ability to present a fuller picture of yourselves. Besides your resume, your profile on LinkedIn can display a picture, the people you’re connected to, your twitter account, your blog/website, and the various almni/social groups you belong to. And similar to Facebook and its applications, there is a host of LinkedIn applications that you can use to customize and personalize your profile. It is essentially the modern resume in full color and detail.

One great thing I like about LinkedIn is the recommendations feature. You can request recommendations from your connections which are then published to your profile. Any employer viewing your profile will be able to read them and get a better gauge of a potential candidate. These are similar to the testimonials that became popular on Friendster.com (remember that?). So instead of submitting two or three recommendation letters to an employer, you can potentially have up to dozens of recommendations from all your connections. Your co-workers, bosses, and even friends can use them to highlight your special skills and abilities so that employers will have all they need to know.

A feature I saw today that I thought was pretty cool was a LinkedIn poll. A recent poll asked members to vote on what they think is the most important factor for climbing the corporate ladder. The 4 choices were, confidence, being well liked, agreeing with the boss, and being well groomed. Obviously confidence is by far the most important of the 4, but what is interesting about the poll is how the choices vary among different industries and age groups.

Here is the link for the poll.

Here is a list of the 10 things I thought were pretty helpful from the poll.

1. Confidence is key

It was not a surprise that confidence was chosen by over 60% of people as the #1 reason for getting promoted. Confidence leads to success in a number of ways. A person who act with confidence or speak with confidence are much more convincing than someone who is nervous and unsure of himself. Even based on appearance alone, people who have positive body language and look confident are assumed to be more successful and make more money. If you look and sound the part, people in the higher ups may also believe that you deserve the part.

2. Being well liked is important too

Despite the landslide victory, 40% of people chose the other 3 answers in the poll. 28% chose being well liked, which is also very revealing. Although having confidence is great, not being very confident does not mean you cannot be successful. Many of the CEOs of multi-million dollar companies do not come across as the super confident alpha males, just look at Bill Gates, or Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos. Many corporate leaders achieve their successes by being able to gain the trust and support of their co-workers and employees. And a big factor in that is being well liked.

However, do not mistaken being well liked for being a kiss ass. Being well liked comes from genuinely liking people and taking an interest in them, and wanting nothing in return. If you want tips on how to win friends and influence people, read the classic book by Dale Carnegie.

3. Agree with your boss most of the time, but not all the time.

Even though agreeing with the boss only received 9% of total votes, that does not mean it is not important. There are some things you should always agree with your boss on, such as company rules and expectations of employees. A great part of a manager’s job is making sure the employees are following the rules and procedures of the company, and a good reason to promote someone is the knowledge that they understand those rules well and will enforce them in a managerial position.

However, there are things you can disagree with your boss on. The my way or the highway type of management went out the window a long time ago and managers now aim for more cooperation and teamwork, which means opportunities for you to make suggestions for improvements. So find out how tolerant your bosses are to disagreements from your coworkers, and then choose the right moments to push your ideas and stand behind them. It will help you stand out from the crowd and be noticed.

The Apprentices

4. Grooming goes a long way towards good first impressions.

Only 2% of people chose having a well groomed appearance as their top reason, but it is one of the most important factors for getting promoted. Numerous studies have shown that people are more likely to trust a person based on their appearance alone. Your appearance is the first thing people notice about you, and is a large part of how first impressions are formed. Some CEOs and businessmen enjoy wearing suits, but most people wear them because of the impression it gives to other people. If you appear well groomed and well put together, people will make positive assumptions about you, including your bosses.

Differences in age

Outside of the answer choices, experience is probably the biggest factor when it comes to getting a good job or getting promoted. But how does experience in the workplace change a person’s perspective on their career outlook? The poll breaks down the results based on age group to reveal some interesting findings.

5. Being well liked is less important as you get older

Confidence and having a well groomed appearance remained nearly constant among all age groups. However, being well liked and agreeing with the boss showed some interesting changes. As people get older, it seems that it becomes less important to be well liked. Among 18-24 year olds that answer received 34% of votes, while among 34-54 year olds the result dropped to 27%. This is probably because as people attain higher positions and more job security later in their careers, they have more freedom to speak their minds and to create changes. You can afford to step on some toes and be safe in the knowledge that your job will still be there tomorrow.

6. But listen to your boss when you’re young.

Correspondingly, it becomes much more important to agree with the boss as one advances in their career. That choice received a mere 3% of votes from 18-24 year olds, jumping to 10% for 25-34 year olds, and up to 11% for 34-54 year olds. It seems that young people want to go into a place and change everything, but a few years of actual work will teach them the importance of respecting the boss. Because no matter how much of a genius you may be, you won’t get anywhere if you don’t know how to follow the rules.

Differences in industry

Different industries have different corporate cultures and corporate structures, so how do the workers in those industries feel about the best ways to get a promotion? The industries looked at by this poll were Accounting, Business development, Consulting, Engineering, Product(?), and Sales. Each had it’s own interesting results.

7. If you work with numbers, you don’t have to be well liked, but you should be well groomed.

The accounting and engineering industry showed almost identical results. Presumably similar types of people work in either industry, which explains the similarities. What is interesting about the results is that they had the lowest number of votes for being well liked, AND the highest number of votes for being well groomed. Which seems to makes sense since accountants and engineers don’t need to interact with people on a regular basis, but they do need to look the part to get the jobs.

8. If you’re selling something, forget about the boss, but you should have good people skills.

Take a wild guess where the highest results for being well liked were found. If you guessed business development and sales, then you were absolutely right. These two industries involve heavy client and customer interaction, and require a great deal of experience handling people. Selling a product often involves more than presenting the facts about the product and asking for a check. Most of the time effective selling requires the salesman to sell himself as someone to be trusted before he can sell the product.

Business development and sales also recorded the lowest votes for agreeing with the boss. This makes sense since salesmen are often out of the office and interacting with clients, there is little to report to the boss about other than sales figures.

Changes as you go up the corporate ladder.

9. Build your confidence, and it will push you up the ladder

The poll results were also broken down based on 4 categories of job titles, Owner, C-level & VP, Management, and Others. The change in results as people climbed the ladder should be noted. Results for confidence rises as one advances up the ladder, going from 58% for others, up to 67% for owners. As you keep working, you gain experience and become better at decision making. Your confidence grows from the good things that you have done, and in turn, your higher confidence will lead to more responsibilities and decisions. Once you have gained enough self confidence, and confidence from your bosses and co-workers, you are ready to go on to the next level.

10. When you’re at the top, priorities change.

Being well liked is the same at around 30% for every category except for owners, where it is 25%. This should not lead you to the conclusion that once you’re at the top, you can piss on the people below you. What this statistic really means is that being the owner, you have the most responsibilities of anyone, and the reins of the company are in your hands. You cannot hope to satisfy everyone, and many times you will be forced to make difficult decisions that will alienate some portion of your employees. However, as the owner, your primary concern is the success of the company, and trying to be well like could jeopardize everyone.

What does it all mean?

This list is not a one stop solution to getting promoted or a shortcut to the top. It is more of a guide of things to be aware of in ones workplace. Going up the corporate ladder is a slow and difficult process, which is why only a few ever rise to the top. There is no secret formula they used to get there other than hard work, and following the proper principles, some of which are outlined in this list.

For young people with little work experience, the results show that it is important to learn the boundaries of a company before pushing the envelope. One important lesson to learn is that the bigger and older the company, the more resistant it is to new ideas and change. So be patient, don’t expect changes to happen overnight even if the changes are for the better. There are processes and procedures that everyone must follow and you are no exception. Keep your eyes open and wait for the right opportunities to make your inputs and make an impression.

Once you have a few years under your belt, and you have proven you ability to follow the rules and procedures of the company, results show that building confidence is your way up the next few rungs of the ladder. Confidence is built from taking on challenging assignments and delivering solid results. The more you prove that you can do, the more responsibility your superiors will give to you. If you have distinguished yourself from the pack, when a position opens up, your name will be among those considered.

My other recommendation is to find out more on your own. One of the best methods of becoming successful is to model those who are successful. Find those who you look up to and have accomplished what you wish to accomplish. Study what they have done to get to where they are and find the commonalities among them. Develop a system for success based on their experiences and you will be well on your own way to success.

If you found this list to be helpful, please leave a comment below and share your experience. Feedback is always welcome!

Here are a few things that are read-worthy this morning (and thought-worthy): 1. Adam Lambert’

Here are a few things that are read-worthy this morning (and thought-worthy):

1. Adam Lambert’s performance on the American Music Awards. Can be seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aJqjf_T-GQk

ZOMG!!! But really, the response to this performance are so full of double standards it’s nauseating. The camera cut away from scenes like when he made out with a guy so fast that it barely gives anyone time to be outraged (Simulated oral sex scene? I had to watch it twice, and I had something much more graphic in mind. Not rubbing a guy’s head in his crotch).

The performance was edited for West Coast viewers, which is ridiculous. It’s not just that he’s gay, it’s that he is a gay man. There has always been less hostility toward woman-on-woman related performances. Or maybe it’s that he is gay, and the same-sex performances we usually see are between people who are heterosexual — example, Madonna and Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera. Sure, Britney and Madonna kissed — but if you are homophobic then you can say it was “hot” because they don’t identify as gay …

2. As Cara at Feministe points out, an insurance company stopped paying a woman, who was on paid leave from work because of major depression, because they saw Facebook photos where she was smiling and looking not so depressed anymore. This is absurd on so many levels, from the fact they got permission to look into her private Facebook pictures to the fact that depression isn’t a constant, 24/7 storm cloud over your head to the fact that, oh, I don’t know, people hide their depression because of the social stigma attached to mental illness?

3. At a cabinet meeting today, Obama said that he told Chinese representatives that he wanted to increase exports to the country, and explained how lucrative just a 5 percent increase in exports could be. Although I learned that exports > imports = not in the red when I was in junior high, I am glad someone is finally getting the picture that the US imports way too much. Job creation? Economic stimulation? Yeah, if we didn’t rely on importing most goods from other countries, we’d likely have those jobs that have gotten outsourced for the past few decades.

I meant to have more, but I started writing this way earlier, then the heating people came, then I lost my train of thought, then I had to start looking for jobs and be productive.

In my last job interview, the interviewer asked me, “If you could do anything for a living for the rest of your life, what would it be.”

Now, keep in mind that the job I was interviewing for was that of Forensic Case Manager for a Mental Health Facility… This job was intensive; working with a severely impaired population suffering from psychotic mood disorders. A majority of the population was also struggling with severe drug addictions and all were homeless offenders. This interview was the first real shot I had at possibly getting a job within my area of college studies! Even though I had virtually no previous experience, I knew they wanted me for the job. I could easily nail this interview. All I could think in my head was, “sling some bull. Do the monkey dance. Tell them you want to go to Grad School. Just get the job!”

But I couldn’t help it. My response was immediate, honest, and simple; “if I could be anything, I would be a professional house painter… or own my own bar in the Caribbean!”

Now, you’d imagine that an interviewer for a Mental Health Facilitiy would be looking for someone whose career aspirations might reach a little bit higher than properly caulking windows, cutting lines, and running ladders… or serving up cocktails to sun burnt tourists. And for a long time, I convinced myself that being a painter was a bad thing… I felt like it was a noble job but that I had to play it off like it was my segway-to-my-real-career.

But really, this was a truly great job… Every morning, I would wake up at the crack of dawn, bust my ass until the sun went down, and could stand back at the end of every single day, see my progress, and see how I have improved a strangers home and life.

Honestly, I can’t believe I stopped.

For a long time, I shamed myself out of embracing this as a great job because it didn’t come with a tie, health insurance, a desk, and all that bullshit. But one thing I do know is that I was more proud of the work I did while I was a house painter than in the eight months I have been a Forensic Case Manager. Yea, I got the job. But it was my job as a house painter that gave me the chance to travel to Costa Rica.

The truly great jobs are few and far between. They can manifest themselves in so many different ways… after all, not every kid wants to be a rich surgeon driving a Ferrari.

For most people, the overwhelming fear of financial instability leads them to the tragic consequence of the dreaded 40 hour work week at the mundane desk job. These cubicled people have calendars tacked to their walls with palm-treed islands, Spanish fortresses, and Tuscan Villas. With hundreds of hours of vacation time banked, they will sit at their desks and daydream of the beautiful places that they have never gone to and never will get to.

Living in Vermont for four years, I met more people than I can count whose dream job paid jack-shit and there was no medical, dental, or vision plan… but the benefits were exactly what they were looking for; they traded their college diploma for lift tickets, they groomed trails, worked lifts, and taught kids how to ski. They rented winter condos with friends and loved their life. They were working a job because they loved to do it- there was no end to work towards. How often do you get paid to do something you love?

by: Thomas Sullivan

The information presented here is designed to provide a benefit to anyone who must answer questions during the dreaded job interview. The main point presented here is that the key to a successful job interview is preparation. The following discussion expounds on this key point.

While some tough job interview questions take us off guard, others we can see coming a mile away. How we answer job interview questions will make the difference between getting and not getting the job. We all have questions that we’d rather not be asked during an interview. But how can one prepare completely for a tough interview?

The answer to this question really comes down to intense preparatory work. In a nutshell, do your homework. Make sure that you know your resume thoroughly and expect questions to come from your work history. Also, expect questions about the company you want to work for and the type of future you want in that company, and finally, expect questions about you. You should use several large lists of questions in preparation for the interview. Below, you will find a list of tough job interview questions, which should be helpful in preparation for the job interview.

While the questions below are pretty standard and can be expected at most job interviews, you should also create your own questions. In creating your questions in preparation for an interview, you really need to sit down and think through what you would ask if you were the interviewer. Remember that the person interviewing you has a job to do as well. If you can provide a good answer to most of the questions below, and to the questions you have created, you have increased the probability of obtaining the job you are seeking.

Obviously during a job interview, regardless of your personality, you need to be congenial and polite. Try not to appear nervous as well. Most importantly, try to appear confident in yourself but not to the point of appearing cocky. Remember, the interviewer is not only trying to select the best candidate for the job, they also want to be sure that you will be compatible with other employees you will be working with. Also, remember that the interviewer is trying their best to find any red flags that may be present in your past work history.

The following is a list of questions you can expect at most job interviews. You most likely will not be asked all of these questions, but you can expect some of them. Many of these questions come from About.com, and some were created by our staff.

Job Interview Questions: Work History

If you know your boss is 100% wrong about something how would you handle it?

Describe a difficult work situation or project and how you overcame it.

Describe a time when your workload was heavy and how you handled it.

What have you been doing since your last job?

Job Interview Questions: About the New Job and the Company

What interests you about this job?

Why do you want this job?

What applicable attributes or experience do you have?

Are you overqualified for this job?

What can you do for this company?

What do you know about this company?

Why do you want to work here?

What challenges are you looking for in a position?

What can you contribute to this company?

Are you willing to travel?

Is there anything I haven’t told you about the job or company that you would like to know?

How do you plan to move up within our company?

What is the highest level you wish to be promoted within our company?

Why should we select you for this job?

Job Interview Questions: The Future

What are you looking for in your next job?

What are your career goals for the next five years and ten years?

How do you plan to achieve those goals?

How long would you like to stay with our company and why?

What are your salary requirements – both short-term and long-term?

What will you do if you don’t get this position?

Once again, the key to a successful job interview is preparation. When you are completely prepared, you will tend to be less nervous. Of course, it is highly likely you will be presented with a question or two that you did not expect. This is why preparation also entails having the knowledge base that you can expect the interviewer will tap into.

Here I am not talking about the knowledge needed to do the job. That should be a given anyway, otherwise you would have not been asked to be at the interview. Here I am talking about knowing yourself and your attitudes, and being able to present your attitudes in a way the interviewer can appreciate. It does not hurt to let the interviewer know what really makes you tick, if the interview goes in that direction.

Make sure that you display an enthusiastic attitude. Make sure you present to the interviewer a willingness to learn and a desire to advance in the company you are about to potentially work for. You do not want to appear as if you are lacking seriousness and definitely do not appear cavalier. Try to appear enthusiastic and positive in a mature and professional way. If you are naturally an enthusiastic and positive type of person, then half the battle is won. The point is to be your self, but try to present the best of who you are.

Remember this, many employers prefer a less educated candidate with fewer credentials who is bright and willing to learn, over one who is more prepared but lacks the proper attitude. A good example of this is the entrepreneur who wants to launch a new business. For him or her who is starting a new venture, hiring someone who is bright and has the right attitude is extremely important. More important then previous education. In this case, the entrepreneur is looking for someone who is not afraid to take risks and is very much goal oriented. Here it is very important that you display to the interviewer your ability to work as part of a team. The 9 to 5 type worker who expects to work basically the same hours 5 days a week would not fit well here. And the interviewer needs to know this.

To conclude, in the end, most interviewers are looking for the right attitude for the job they are trying to fill. If you also have the right credentials along with the right attitude, then your chances are increased tremendously. If you can answer most of the above questions, display an enthusiastic attitude, and present yourself in the best possible way, this should result in you obtaining the job you are seeking.

by: Peak Performance Are you considering a conspicuous vary in your career? Do you seek give down, b

by: Peak Performance

Are you considering a conspicuous vary in your career? Do you seek give down, bored, burnt out? Maybe you conceive there is something large and solon purposeful that you are meant to do. Perhaps your accompany downsized you into this predicament. disregardless of the reason, there are several plebeian Tipss to desist patch you valuate and superior fresh job options. desist these pitfalls and you tin satisfy motivated, fastness your hold and relocation frontward successfully.

Tips #1 – effort Bogged eat by Decisions

If you’re an intelligent individual who has enjoyed some assess of success, chances are there are a accumulation of different choices you could form in your close magnanimous vivification or advance change. Clients oftentimes say me they are overwhelmed by every of the thoughts and ideas that donjon streaming finished their minds. And as the deluge sets in, it is very promiscuous to upright unopen down. As we transform together, I inform clients when making hard decisions to inquire themselves, “Is this accomplishment to run me forward?” If the result is yes, proceed. If the reply is no, either revise the resoluteness or drape it entirely.

Tips #2 – Not Having a Plan

There are deuce reasons this is important. First, invigoration is occasional and it is unsafe to foreswear instrument before the close job ornamentation is unsmooth up. Second, dynamical careers is a caboodle equal dating. You are ever author enviable when you are unavailable. You are solon taking to a expected employer if you are already working. And if you person already preoccupied your duty either voluntarily or involuntarily, it is steady writer key to bed a project so that you are then author apt to attain it. If you reckon success, you testament be successful. (Conversely, if you don’t someone a plan, how instrument you cognize when you’ve succeeded?)

Tips #3 – finish your compound also Soon

All I container have here is, prepare, prepare, prepare. If you’re looking at individual possibilities, don’t straightaway deliver cardinal when other looks good. Think nigh every of the gravid tests you have condemned in period (college entry exams, finals, credential exams) and how you embattled for those. Did you excogitate selection in propose and decide a big, long hurt before winning the test? Or were you allay representation the substance as you walked in the threshold on attempt day, wondering if you could console be healthier prepared? When you’re embarking on a novel calling or beingness change, commit it every of your useable energy, skills and attention. If you know a end in mind, refuse quiet when you judge you near bang it. set and slip fulgurating justness up until the period you start. This instrument ply maintain you from losing certainty at the finally minute.

Tips #4 – exploit Discouraged also Easily

Does this hap to you when you play hurdling in the interior of your goal? Instead of giving in to the pain, remuneration work to what specifically is making you uneasy and alter adjustments to seize you through. For example, if you’re in business transition and you see that it is uncomfortable to go finished the dulness of making sound calls, sending resumes, feat on interviews where the contention is tough, etc., judge the instruction that gives you a accident without fixing the process. wear devoting an time or deuce apiece forenoon to these tasks and letting it go for the reside of the day, or exclusive making a sure amount of sound calls or discourse appointments per period so that when you’re finished, you preserve perceive sound near sharing yourself both case off. Don’t stop. Adjust.

Tips #5 – Making Decisions in Haste

Tempted to retributive leave and offstage it? Everyone is today and then, but unless you virtuous can’t support your latest position added day, resist! Instead, compose plumage everything you **** nearly your prevalent situation, then figure by one, look at the most unbearable issues and check how you commode motion apiece around to make it solon sufferable for the here moment.

It is promiscuous to rag so agog nigh the forthcoming that you settle to workplace forrader without a think and comic everything course water your portion after that. It give tell solon forcefulness to keep your newborn progress and accomplish it production wellspring for you than it gift to discover and begin it. It is turn to become from a rank of higher drive and unchangeableness than to move impermissible already burned outgoing or worried nearly how you give gain the bills. deliberate hunting the forbear of a modified procession coach, beingness tutor or vocation adviser to amend you denote your incoming line path. An objective, drilled ordinal receiver preserve ply you strategize and point it in for the human results and the lowest quantity of heartache.

Tips #6 – Ignoring the Finances

“I can’t stop this whatever longer! I would kinda deplete canine matter than place up with this added day!” Whether you are pursuing a refreshing business voluntarily or involuntarily, you staleness pay the bills. Do travel your dream. Do sensing for the occupation that brings impossible the foremost in you. If you get plenty of savings, opportune for you! escape the temptation to go finished it and be manus without. If you individual a dream, by each effectuation flow on to it! But if it won’t realistically annoy disconnected the object for III years, feat other path to get a extant in the meantime. The necessity for income is a realness you cannot ignore.

Tips #7 – material Your progress with Negative Stuff

What do you read? What do you analyze on telly or the Internet? With whom do you expend escaped time? When you’re hunting at making intemperate living and line changes, you require lots of optimistic force around you. If you pay moment with unfavorable fill or change your intelligence with anything that isn’t useful, shot what? It fills you with dissident energy. Instead, circle yourself with people and things that commit you supportive strength and encouragement. feature books that incite and encourage you. Go places that exalt you. Do everything you tin to be what you poverty to be suchlike after you get the succeeding high advance opportunity, and you module be solon belike to appeal it into your life!

Remember, a advance convert is a aliveness change. You didn’t get at your prevailing destroy of upbringing and experience overnight, and don’t be foiled if you don’t straightaway expose “the thing” you deprivation to do next. give yourself reading and grapheme to explore and micturate an learned decision. make the serve you pauperism along the portion (i.e., job coach, advance counselor) to improve you do it strategically, not emotionally. If you avoid these Tipss you are some author belike to terminate up in a early occupation that complements and fulfills your life.

We all know the recession is over, right? The media announced that some weeks ago. But we also know this is like no other recession in most of our lifetimes – in fact, the job landscape may never return to the way it was. The days of starting with one company and retiring from that same company are pretty much gone.

If we believe that the recovery will be slow and lasting much longer than in the past (and we do), then the short term looks a lot like contract and temp work. Many people are looking at these types of employment, hoping they will lead to full time work. Others are re-tooling in a different way.

I’ve heard many talk of the renewable energy sector as the holy grail for new jobs, and it may indeed create new careers. Some are trying to learn as much as they can about the industry (solar, wind, biomass, etc.) and transfer their skills from other industries. Still others are taking this time to learn entirely new skills.

I have a friend who retired a few years ago from a major tech company. He has a PhD. in Engineering. He is now in a program at UC Berkeley learning a totally new discipline and is looking to share his new learnings with others in a paid or volunteer capacity.

Still others are starting side businesses – many as infopreneurs – learning how to use social media for their new businesses. Learning these skills will most likely help them in whatever new jobs or careers they find when the recovery takes hold.

Here’s an example of one such individual from the WSJ’s blog, Laid Off and Looking.

What are you doing to learn new skills, keep the ones you have sharp and apply them?

Jobs continue to appear each week despite the impending holiday. See downloadable list Jobs That Crossed My Desk Through Nov. 22,2009

Remember to take some time to celebrate all the things you can be thankful for and remember you will survive this economic downturn. I say this with voice of experience–I was unemployed 3 out of the last 5 downturns starting with my job search just after completing my Ph.D. I am thankful to all the wonderful industry contacts you helped me redirect and/or chart a new course each time. Shake off any tendency to feel bitter about a layoff or punish yourself for not getting the job at your last interview. The most unwelcome addition to a firm is a person who views the glass half empty.

It’s common that after returning to full time work, people regret that they didn’t take more time to smell the roses, exercise, cultivate friendships, attend their children’s soccer games, work in the garden, even clean out the storage room while they had so much available time while transitioning. High achieving folks miss the accomplishments of work and feeling of satisfaction that feeds the mind and spirit. Experiencing achievements through projects at home, fraternal, civic and religious organizations can help feed your unconscious with positive experiences that maintain your good spirits and sense of purpose and self respect.

Remember what goes around comes around–play “pass it forward.” Good jobs come from relationships you’re established that were reciprocal in nature. So become involved with helping others in your network, establish one if you haven’t so far. Research companies carefully before interviewing–you need to establish connection of your skills and experience to possible solutions needed by company to which you’re applying. Practice your “elevator pitch” while networking with these safe contacts at local meetings.

Be sure to find contacts at the target hiring company to whom you might request they submit your resume directly. The Bio2Device Group is ideal for this since it’s a large group with weekly events and 60 to 100 attendees from diverse companies and functions. Even those who are in transition can help you connect with jobs of which they become aware but that don’t fit for them but do for you.

I send you a virtual hug to embrace your outstanding capability and innate good nature and caring on this Thanksgiving! Although it may sound silly, you can achieve a real lift from self embracing yourself (that’s right–wrap your arms around yourself) and remind yourself that you are a valuable person. I believe you can find the career that suits you and in which you can continue to grow and prosper but you need to believe in yourself.

See you on Dec. 1st at the upcoming Bio2Device Group meeting when we have an outstanding speaker on how a foundation such as the Parkinson’s Institute right in our backyard can play a role in bringing important drugs to market. I’ll only be able to stay until 10:15 am this week due to meeting that follows so won’t have as much time to network individually with you but will be more available at the BayBio Medical Device breakfast on the 8th and that evening at the Bio2Device Group when we have another outstanding industry speaker traveling from the East Coast to speak to us.

I look forward to seeing some of you at the upcoming UCSC Ext. Bioscience Business Development course in Santa Clara, Dec. 3-4th.

Have a great week and wonderful holiday! You deserve it.

It is no question that our state’s current economy is one of the worst in years. In a 2009 report conducted by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), Ohio was ranked 49th in economic performance on the national State Economic Competitiveness Index.

According to the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS), since 2007 nearly 200,000 Ohioans have lost their jobs.

Despite these bleak statistics, my colleagues and I in the Legislature have hope in the future of Ohio. Since May we have been working on a ten-bill package, which will spur economic development in our state by creating jobs and encouraging industry growth. The package was unveiled in September at a series of news conferences across the state.

Many of the proposals offered as part of “The Future of Ohio” package would come at a minimal cost to taxpayers when enacted, with long-term job creation, economic stimulus and far greater revenue in state income than costs. Every job created by these proposals would have a multiplier effect on the local and state economy and would increase tax revenues for state and local government. The proposals were drawn from discussions with constituents and small business owners across Ohio.

Small Business Resources

According to the Small Business Administration, small businesses represent 99.7 percent of employers and contribute 60 to 80 percent of new jobs annually. Legislation has been introduced to benefit small businesses that keep our hometowns thriving and economy strong. To give novice entrepreneurs a competitive edge a bill would be initiated to create an online small business resource portal on the Ohio Department of Development’s (ODOD) web site to offer information and help.

Additionally, House Bill 311 creates a series of small business reforms to help small businesses cut through red tape and provide accountability in crafting agency regulations. With that, another proposal would authorize the creation of a low- to zero-interest loan program for small businesses through the local business linked deposit program.

Employer Incentives

House Bill 277 has been introduced to offer encouragement for employers to hire previously unemployed individuals. This legislation gives Ohio businesses a $2,400 tax credit for each employee hired by the company so long as the employee was unemployed for four consecutive weeks prior to the hiring date and is employed for a period of at least two years.

Additionally, House Bill 320 has been introduced as companion legislation to a bill in the Ohio Senate that addresses private sector compensatory time. The proposal would provide more flexibility in allowing employers to grant compensatory time and paid time off work to promote a more family-friendly work environment.

Measure of Success

It is difficult for a business to know where things are or are not working unless adequate feedback is provided, an idea that can also be applied to the State of Ohio. House Bill 346 will supply the leaders of the General Assembly with the annual ODJFS Report to the U.S. Department of Labor and make it available on their web site to track job placement success.

Additionally, it is important for the ODOD to examine why Ohio-based companies choose to relocate to other states. To refocus our state priorities, new legislation would require the ODOD to develop a standard questionnaire to elicit reasons for companies relocating out of state and report its findings with the Legislature. With the introduction of these bills, I look forward to discussion and debate so the Ohio House can help get Ohioans back to work.

And here’s the transcript:

ANNOUNCER: We will now take you live to Beijing for the joint press conference already underway between U.S. President Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao.

OBAMA: As I already said privately, I would like to thank President Jintao for his kind welcome and generous hospitality, and I hope that during this visit we can have a productive dialogue about the serious issues of concern that remain between our two countries — issues ranging from the unfair valuation of your currency to the trade imbalance, and most importantly, human rights. I believe there can be a great partnership between us but it will require compromise and understanding.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Thank you, Mr. President. I would like to add that I completely understand why you feel entitled to come here and lecture China on our shortcomings. After all, my country does owe the United States a great deal of money. Oh, wait. Hold on a moment. I believe I had that backwards. In fact, now that I think about it, it is your country that owes us a large sum of money. Is this correct?

OBAMA: Uh… yes.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Now, it’s coming back to me. I believe it’s $800 billion.

OBAMA: That is correct.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Such a large sum.

OBAMA: Yes, it is.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: And yet you haven’t even mentioned it. That’s so odd.

OBAMA: Uh, look, you’re going to get your money.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Are we? Are we going to get our money? Because from what I read your country is in the middle of a serious recession.

OBAMA: Uh, while this is true, there are signs that our bailout has steadied the financial markets and our stimulus package has been effective in fixing the job crisis.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: I’m curious. How many jobs has it created?

OBAMA: Uh, so far, none.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: I see.

OBAMA: But our health care reform plan, we’re confident, is going to lead to enormous savings.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: How exactly is extending health care coverage to 30 million people going to save you money?

OBAMA: I… don’t know.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: And this “Cash for Clunkers” program– I have read that you purchased many clunkers with our money.

OBAMA: Yes, we have.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: What does this word “clunkers” mean?

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

OBAMA: Well, a clunker is a car…

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: I know what a clunker is. And just so there is no misunderstanding, you are not allowed to pay us back in clunkers.

OBAMA:Of course not.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: You know, as I listen to you, I am noticing that each of your plans to save money involves spending even more money. This does not inspire confidence.

OBAMA: I assure you, you’re going to get your money.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Will you kiss me?

OBAMA: Sorry?

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Will you kiss me?

OBAMA: I don’t understand.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: I like to be kissed, (shouts) when someone is doing sex to me!

OBAMA: There’s no need for that.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: No? You know how many uninsured we have in China? One and a quarter billion, billion. But I’ll tell you this: We don’t owe anyone $800 billion.

OBAMA: Well, obviously, we take our debt to you very seriously.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: I suppose if I really wanted to get my money I could call and say I was a Wall Street banker who needs his bonus. But really, why should I have to stoop to that level?

OBAMA: You don’t have to stoop to any level.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Please understand if it were my $800 billion I wouldn’t care, but it belongs to my country. I feel like I should bring it up.

OBAMA: You’re going to get your money.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Say, while you’re here, are you at least going to treat me to dinner and a movie?

OBAMA: I’m sorry?

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: I think it’s the polite thing to do, (shouts) before doing sex to me!

OBAMA: Mr. President, please.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Very well.

OBAMA: I assure you that as soon we solve this economic crisis…

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Which one? The one that your country’s reckless real estate speculation caused? That one? I just want to make sure I know which one we’re talking about.

OBAMA: We are taking steps to make sure that what happened will never happen again.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: What steps?

OBAMA: Uh, reform of banking regulations.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Do I look like Mrs. Obama?

OBAMA: What?

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Do I look like Mrs. Obama?

OBAMA: Of course not.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Then why are you trying to (shouts) do sex to me like I was Mrs. Obama?

OBAMA: Now, now.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Just do it. Get it over with.

OBAMA: Mr. President!

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Don’t be a tease.

OBAMA: I just…

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: I can take it.

OBAMA: This is not the time or place.

(Hu Jintao “speaks.”)

INTERPRETER: Very well. In that case, I call this press conference to a close, and Live from New York, it’s Saturday Night!
