Joe Jackson

Joe Jackson (born David Ian Jackson, 11 August 1954, Burton upon Trent, Staffordshire) is an English musician and singer–songwriter, now living in Berlin, whose five Grammy Award nominations span from 1979 to 2001. He is best known for the 1979 hit songIs She Really Going Out with Him?”, which still gets extensive FM radio airplay; the 1982 hit, “Steppin’ Out”; and for his 1984 success with, “You Can’t Get What You Want (Till You Know What You Want)”. “

Along with Elvis Costello and Graham Parker, Jackson was a part of the trio of British based artists who challenged the punk scene and brought a new wave sound to the United States in the late 1970s. He was popular for his earlier power pop and new wave music, before moving to more eclectic, though less commercially successful pop, jazz and classical music offerings.

In 1978 producer David Kershenbaum heard Jackson’s demo tape, and signed him to A&M Records on 9 August 1978. The album Look Sharp! was recorded straight away, and was released in January 1979. In an interview in February 1979 with NME magazine, Jackson talked about Look Sharp!; “I didn’t want your typical 1977/1978 new wave band sound. I wanted more of a reggae mix, where you have a very upfront bass and drums and a thin sounding guitar that goes in and out. The idea is to leave a lot of gaps to let the song really come through”. In March, Look Sharp! broke into the record charts, eventually peaking at #40 in the UK Albums Chart. The same month, A&M released the album in the U.S., and it quickly charted, reaching the #20 in the Billboard 200, after “Is She Really Going Out with Him?” was released as a single in May (while Jackson toured North America) and became a Top 40 hit. In September, the LP was certified gold in the U.S., whilst in the UK, “Is She Really Going Out with Him?” was re-released in July and charted the following month, making the Top 20. Jackson was nominated for a 1979 Best Rock Vocal Performance, Male, for the single. Equally, the album cover of Look Sharp! was nominated for Grammy Award for Best Recording Package.

I’ve never been a fan of Joe Jackson, but I have always liked the song. And while I’m not against using songs in commercials (quite the opposite actually, it’s a great way to bring new music to people who are generally only inclined to listen to what’s on the radio) I feel like it’s a misappropriation of the song. A spinning gordita, with Joe Jackson playing in the background, is that really the best you could come up with Taco Bell?

According to the documents, 80-year-old Joe’s monthly expenses are estimated at more than $15,000 but he has no income. Joe apparently suffers from diabetes and needs financial assistance for his medical bills, rent for his Las Vegas home, travel, hotel accommodations, and eating out. Consequently, he is seeking a monthly allowance in an undisclosed amount from the estate of his late son. He currently receives $1,700 a month in social security payments. The papers further reveal that over the years, Katherine Jackson, Michael’s mother, gave her husband Joe money she received from Michael. Mrs. Jackson currently receives monthly allowances of $26,000 for her maintenance and $60,000 for Michael’s children. She was granted this temporary allowance pending receipt of the proceeds of his estate. Mr. Jackson’s request for an immediate hearing was denied.

The lawyer for the administrators of the estate expressed surprise at Mr. Jackson’s request but did say it would be considered. His surprise was undoubtedly shared by many others. The relationship between the father and the son, who died on June 25 of this year, was unpleasant. Michael spoke openly about the abuse he suffered at the hands of his father. Their relationship was strained and Joe was not included in Michael’s will. Furthermore, Michael requested that his mother get custody of his children and money, but neglected to mention his father.

It will certainly be interesting to see if the judge in the case considers the history between the two and how the contents of Jackson’s will might affect the decision. If his request is granted, Joe Jackson will profit from an estate that continues to grow in the wake of the singer’s death. There had been speculation surrounding the estate’s value and whether the funds were sufficient to pay all of the expenses related to the singer’s death and to maintain his children. Michael was recently added to Forbes magazine’s list of Top Earning Dead Celebrities and even surpassed Elvis. Jackson’s This is It was sold to Sony, adding $60 million to Michael’s estate. It was a number one blockbuster and grossed over $100 million and is rumored to possibly be an Oscar contender.

Since Michael Jackson’s death back in June, many tears have been shed for the fallen “King of Pop.”  Unfortunately, instead of tears, the eyes of Michael’s brother’s and father have been filled with dollar signs as of late.  After the family finally buried Michael, more than two months after his death, the remaining members of the Jackson 5 and the slap happy patriarch wasted little time cashing in on the death of their brother.  Not only is a reunion tour in the works, as a “tribute” to Michael, but a documentary series about the family is set to premiere on A&E in December.  Is nothing sacred?  Even in death, this dysfunctional excuse for a family continues to mooch off their vastly superior brothers career.  I especially love that Joe Jackson, the proud papa emerges out of obscurity immediately after his son dies to appear on every single talk show and instead of talking about how much he loved his son Michael, he proceeds to use the opportunities for plugs for his record label.

Wow.  If anyone has any doubts why this scumbag was left out of his sons will, those doubts should be put to rest after watching that video.  The saddest part of Michael’s death may be the fact that he was surrounded by leeches that wanted to steal his money at every chance they got.  Michael Jackson was one of, if not the greatest performers the world will ever see and it’s simply horrifying that the other Jackson brothers and Joe are too concerned with their own self-serving agendas to realize that.  Logically speaking, to imagine a world where Michael’s father didn’t exist would mean that Michael would never have existed either.  However I’m confident that whoever’s sperm Michael would’ve been conceived from, he would’ve still managed to go on to take the world by storm.

In a world where Joe Jackson and the remaining Jackson 4 didn’t exist to ride their brothers coat tails:

• Michael Jackson wouldn’t have grown up to be an 8 year old in a 49 year old’s body having not experienced the rampant abuse by his father throughout his childhood.
• You’d think we’d be without such great songs as “I Want You Back” and “I’ll be there,” but little Michael would’ve been paired with some other black guys because let’s face it, Michael is what made those songs great.  The other brothers are definitely interchangeable.
• Micheal would never have potentially diddled those boys also if he hadn’t experienced the damaging abuse by his father throughout his childhood.
• Jermaine would never have been able to launch his explosive solo career…wait he had a solo career?
• Sadly, this album cover would never have come to fruition.

The Jackson 4 + Joe wouldn’t be able to capitalize on anything their brother was a part of, including the recent popularity of “This Is It,” which they recorded background vocals for because they wouldn’t miss an opportunity to mooch off their brother’s success.
• Michael wouldn’t have to turn over in his grave when Joe Jackson eventually whores out Michael’s children by marketing them as the Prince and Princess of Pop.

Like Elvis Presley and Tupac Shakur before him, I think it’s safe to say that Michael Jackson will probably go on to make more money dead than he did alive.  I pray to god that the only person who gets a crack at any of that money is those children and Michael’s mother, Katherine, in order to properly raise those children as Michael would’ve wanted.  I fear that Joe Jackson is going to try his greedy claws on that money at every chance he can.  Hell, he’s already in a court battle to try and gain some portion of Michael’s estate for “living expenses.”  What a douche.  And please, Jackson brothers, don’t go on that reunion tour. I hate to shatter your guys’ world, but nobody gives a flying fuck about you without MJ.

What a turn! Katherine and Joe Jackson are fighting each other in court … right now.

Como Michael Lohan le ha estado robando cámara últimamente, Joe Jackson está intentando desesperadamente volverse a ganar el título de padre del milenio. Ahora Joe dice que los administradores que están a cargo de hacer que el testamento de Michael Jackson se cumpla, hicieron fraude. I’ve been sick with a head cold which a massive dose of “Emergen-C” has probably prevented from turning worse. To tell the truth, I’m still tired, stressed, and more than a little cranky. I’m also behind the curve in terms of current events commentary, so I’d thought I’d play catch-up by offering my unsolicited opinion on a range of news topics, albeit at a deeply discounted price, given the economy, my general mood, and the fact that the stuff is unsolicited (which makes me just like the other 80 million bloggers across the globe). Anyway:

Army doctor at Fort Hood kills twelve:  The shooter was commissioned, a loner, a psychiatrist (!) and a Muslim, in no particular order — or maybe the order matters. The location was a military base in Texas. The hero  was a local policewoman. So many stories, so much analysis, so few new angles. Once again, mainstream media is obsessing.

Health care legislation may not solve problem of rising costs: I admit that while championing a solution that would provide health care for the uninsured, I foolishly believed Congress and the White House might also be able to craft legislation that addressed the runaway cost of health care. Was I wrong? Tell me I was wrong. Otherwise, what the hell are we doing?

Republican candidates win gubernatorial races in Virginia, New Jersey: First of all, these victories do not represent an indictment of Obama; rather, the Democratic candidates represented an indictment of incompetancy. Second, New Jersey is exceptional; that is, exceptionally corrupt. If the virus is spreading, however, I have to rethink this whole third party thing.

Mostly, it’s noticeable for pull quotes, serialization potential, and the overtly earthly presence of its “ghost” writer. It’s sure to be a best-seller.

The Shuffle Report: 10 songs I listened to, in order, on my iPod in shuffle mode at a given point in time. No editing, no skipping. It is what it is.

It was one of those nights. Everyone has one of those nights. You go to bed at a decent hour, manage to fall asleep relatively quickly but alas, a peaceful night’s rest is not to be. For any number of reasons, you find yourself awake in the middle of the night, and as hard as you pray for a quick return to dreamland, the sleep gods just laugh at you. Eventually, you do manage to will yourself back to sleep, but then the alarm goes off an hour later. When that happens, the first word that usually comes to mind starts with ‘f’ and rhymes with truck.

So while I tried to stay awake on the subway ride to work, thinking happy thoughts about that cup of coffee I’m going to grab as soon as I get to the office and trying to focus so I don’t miss my stop (hey, it’s happened), I turned up the volume on the iPod just a little bit louder. Had some good tunes to keep me company:

1. One More Day—Cheap Trick (Rockford) [Highly recommend this latter-day release from the masters of power pop.]
2. Hi Hi Hi—Paul McCartney (Wingspan: Hits and History) [Great rocker from McCartney's early solo work.]
3. Strong—Robbie Williams (The Ego Has Landed) [The guy is one of the biggest pop stars in the world but not in North America. Have never been able to figure that one out.]
4. Jamie G.—Joe Jackson (Laughter & Lust) [An oft-overlooked album from JJ's catalogue that contains some decent cuts.]
5. Ray’s Blues—Ray Charles (The Birth of Soul) [Essential compilation of Ray's career with Atlantic Records.]
6. Paper Thin—John Hiatt (Slow Turning) [Outstanding album from one my favourite artists.]
7. Outskirts—Blue Rodeo (Outskirts) [Have never grown tired of this album, 22 years after its release.]

Joe Jackson Wants to Dig Into Michael’s Deep Pockets

Michael Jackson’s father, Joe Jackson, has requested a financial allowance from his son’s estate according to the BBC.

“Mr Jackson’s petition will be considered as are all requests for money from Michael’s estate,” said Howard Weitzman, a lawyer for the administrators of the late singer’s estate. He added that it was “quite surprising to learn of the request”.

Joe Jackson stated that his monthly expenses are $20,000 but he only receives $1700 from the estate according to court papers filed in the Los Angeles Superior Court. They also claimed the King of Pop’s estate has earned approximately $100 million since his death on June 25th. The request will be assessed in a hearing expected to occur next year.

A judge approved monthly payments to Katherine Jackson, Michael’s mother, as well as his daughter and two sons. The will omitted Joe Jackson. Both the previously approved payments as well the request for a new allowance may be evaluated at the same time to come to a judgment on Joe’s request.

Joe Jackson reportedly does not have a regular source of income and has relied on payments from Michael through his wife Katherine for years, according to court documents. His sole source of income is social security payments stated Jackson’s lawyers. They further claimed that Joe suffered a stroke 10 years ago and suffers from diabetes.

Joe listed air travel, hotel accommodation, meals out and rent for his Las Vegas home as expenses according to court papers.

Joe Jackson, 81, is the patriarch of the Jackson family. He was the original manager of the Jackson 5 and his shrewd artistic and business management sparked their success. However, his svengali-like handling of his children and reports of physical and emotional abuse have tarnished his reputation.
