I know this video’s made its way around the internets, but once in a while you need to hear Joe Rogan doing something other than talking shit on judges. He has a new stand up DVD that’s either out, or coming out soon, and I’m sure its funny as balls.

Anyone catch UFC 105: Couture vs Vera? Boy oh boy… in what is becoming a blemish for the UFC, the judges yet again fail misserably at their jobs. I’m a huge Couture fan but this should be such a hollow victory for him. Just a quick recap for how judges score a bout:

Judging Criteria
Judges are required to determine the winner of a bout that goes to it’s full time limit based upon the following criteria:
-Clean Strikes
-Effective Grappling
-Octagon Control
-Effective Aggressiveness

Round 1 really didn’t have much going on but if someone had to win that round it should have gone to Couture for pushing Vera to the cage and holding him there for a good portion of the round.

Rounds 2 and 3 were pretty much the same thing from Couture. However Vera landed some effective strikes in both rounds and rocked Couture in both rounds with some clean strikes. Couture really didn’t do much of anything except try and hold Vera in place. Points for him for octagon control but Vera showed effective aggressiveness and landed clean strikes in both of those rounds.

Midway through the second round, Vera landed a high kick followed by another left leg kick to Couture’s side. Another body kick, followed by a big right and a knee to the chest and Couture was on the ground.

The judges got the score right but the decision completely wrong. It should have been 29 – 28; the winner being Brandon Vera.

I don’t even think Couture felt that he had won. He had the look of someone who was quite disappointed and in all honesty I thought he was possibly entertaining the notion of retirement before they announced him as the winner. Couture didn’t defend his win with much conviction and his explanation for the score was that “I controlled the tempo of the fight. It probably wasn’t the most exciting thing to watch.”

Unfortunately this isn’t the first time the judges have gotten it wrong. One only needs to go back to UFC 104: Machida vs Shogun to see poor judge scoring.

I blame this on the mentality that ‘one must beat a champion to become a champion‘. Of course you have to win… but I feel that people take this to mean that one must dominate a champion to get on top. We need to get rid of this though process. The fights should be judged as any other fight… the criteria used should be the same regardless of status.

As Bruce Buffer would say… “It’s Time“… Time for change. C’mon Dana White… it’s time to get competent judges or otherwise train them properly. I barely have a background in fighting and yet could do a much better job than any of these guys who you have judging the bouts. Even Joe Rogan is disgusted by the outcomes from these past two fights.

Awesome Joe Rogan vid hits on all the germane points of evolution. Joe – you rock!!!

For the first time in what feels like weeks (see. two days) I don’t feel like my body has gone twelve with Tyson. The nagging cough remains, but the body aches are gone, so I’m going to declare myself operational at 80%. Which means I can get back to business (emoticon with the party hat and noise maker).

There are only two good things that come out of being sick:

#1) It forces you to appreciate the health you would otherwise take for granted.

#2) You get time to catch up on your Joe Rogan.

If anyone out there thinks Joe Rogan is just the handy man from NewsRadio or the voice of the UFC or the Fear Factor dude, I strongly recommend you take a look at this website. Dude is a killer stand up comic, and a unique blend of humble and opinionated.

More than anything though, he loves stand up and protects it passionately. Youtube him jumping on stage at a Carlos Mencia show and calling him out on stealing jokes.

These predictions will span three days from now till thursday, I may do an extensive look at the main event and co-main event, but that all depends on how busy the week gets.

I’m going to start being a lot more concise with my picks from now on in order to prevent myself from over thinking and to allow myself to be a lot more logical with my picks rather than emotional. Also I’m not going to pick all the fights because I’m still learning strengths and weaknesses of some fighters. I was told recently that my picking skills suck so I took a pick hiatus. However after picking all but one of the winners of UFC 103 I’ve decided to stick to what I know. So I’m going to pick fights of fighters that I’ve seen fight at least once. So these picks should be solid unless that whole freak out crazy submission, KO or injury comes into play. We’ll call the the Serragriffinte rule. (Most mma fans will know this reference, but ask me if you’re curious)

Spike is showing preliminary fights this time around again (which I love) so this means more fights for everyone. For anyone who watched the fights at UFC 103 you know these aren’t fights you’re going to want to miss. (and it’s free, so come on!)

Ryan Bader vs Eric Schafer

Light Heavyweight Non Title Bout
Ryan Bader KO or TKO

Advantages to Shafer: Extremely strong BJJ and a good chin, he was able to get out of a bad situation with dangerous striker Houston Alexander yet capitalize on the ground with the arm triangle.

Advantages to Bader: Very well rounded fighter, strong hands and even stronger wrestling. His last few fights have shown his well roundedness. A TKO victory on the Ultimate Fighter finale and a strong display of wrestling against Carmelo Marrero further asserts this theory.

Ryan Bader will use superior hands and wrestling to keep the fight where he wants it, on his feet. If it goes to the ground Bader will be comfortable enough to defend himself get back to his feet. Look for an early round 1 KO or late round 2 TKO.

Anthony Johnson vs. Yoshiyuki Yoshida

Welterweight Non title Bout
Anthony Johnson KO round 1

Advantages to Yoshida: In 14 fights he’s never seen the third round. In three of his last four matches he hasn’t seen the second round. Yoshida fights to win, he trains under Greg Jackson and has displayed some pretty impressive striking.

Advantages to Johnson: In 9 fights he’s been to decision twice and won both of those fights. All of his non decision wins were by KO or TKO that accounts for 5 of his 7 wins. He technically only has one loss on his record. He has astronomically good striking and hits hard. He also has outstanding takedown defense due to his excellent wrestling.

Anthony Johnson is going to knock Yoshida out of the UFC. This fight will NOT go past round one. This is not a very favorable match-up for Yoshida and frankly after what Koshchek did to him I’m surprised they would match him up with Johnson. There will be no surprises in this matchup.

“The Invention of Lying”

What would you do if any lie you told was instantly taken as truth? In The Invention of Lying, Mark Bellison, played by Ricky Gervais, finds himself being the first person in a parallel reality that learns the art of lying. I think the trailers are a little misleading because they make it seem like everyone tells the truth. But, it’s more like they speak their mind no matter what, because they don’t know how to lie, and they simply just don’t know what else to say. Also, in this reality there is no fiction, and because of that the film industry only makes films about historic events. There also aren’t any actors in this world because acting like someone you’re not would be lying. So, how do they make the movies you ask? Why readers of course. That’s right, movies are just a person, in this case the brilliant Christopher Guest, sitting in a comfy chair reading a history book to the audience. If you think the movies would be bad, just take a minute to think about how great your dating life would be without lying. Would anyone honestly be dating? No pun intended.
When we first meet Mark Bellison, he’s loosing his job as the screenwriter of the Black Plague, and his blind date with Anna McDoogles, played by Jennifer Garner, is anything but smooth. But, when he asks a bank teller for more money than he has in his account, she chalks it up to a computer mistake, and gives him the amount he asked for. Voila, the world’s first lie! A lie can be a powerful thing when no one questions it, the world quickly becomes Mark’s oyster. However, Mark doesn’t realize just how powerful until he tells his dying mother something to comfort her. It’s overheard and repeated, and things quickly get just a little bit out of control.
I really enjoyed this movie, but sadly it might upset some. See, there is this religious undertone in this movie that could upset some Christians; but I honestly don’t think that was the intent of Ricky Gervais. I don’t think they’re saying that there is no God. In Christianity the word of God is told through parables in the Bible, which never would have been written in this world. As our friend Joe Rogan would point out, I’m pretty sure that no one thinks that Noah’s Ark is a 100% true story. Please don’t tell me you really believe a giant boat was built to carry two of every animal in the entire world, for forty days and forty nights! Look, those stories, much like The Invention of Lying, are told in hopes of making people want to be better to each other. You know… Peace on Earth, goodwill towards men… Ah, and women. Hey, I didn’t write it. Honestly, it doesn’t matter what religion you believe, whether it’s Christianity, Judaism, Islam, or hell even Scientology. At the core of it all, those religions are meant to do one thing… make people want to be a better person and hopefully make the world a better place. Funny, it’s the same thing that people kill each other over and start wars because of. The point is, Mark Bellison wanted people to be nicer to each other, and if telling a few lies would make the world a better place, maybe it’s not so bad. Now, I understand that religion is a touchy topic. And the last thing I want to do is upset any of you, but let’s just believe what makes us feel good, and not force those beliefs on other people. When did this turn into a rally? Go see The Invention of Lying, it’s honestly a good movie… No, really. Seriously, it’s really good. Would I lie to you?! Okay, I would. But, it really is worth seeing.
