Here’s the story of a song that will bring you from the dancefloor to the dancefloor, the story of “Promised land”.

This song was first written by Joe Smooth in 1988, featuring Anthony Thomas on the vocals. This rapidly became a house anthem, a really good track which helped placing Chicago on the house map (along with Marshall Jefferson and Frankie Knuckles’ productions).

The sound of “Promised Land” is definitely deep house, and the lyrics fit perfectly with the house scene of that time, more like a community, sharing similar feelings for this underground (?) music and suffering from the lack of recognition. “Brothers, sisters, one day we will be free”. This somehow recalls the religious atmosphere of “Can you feel it” preached by Mr. Fingers, two years before “Promised land” and also stemming from Chicago. Gospel was a major influence and if you get rid of the music, the texts could be used in other musical genres proclaiming unity of people, freedom and peace for the world. “As we walk hand in hand, Sisters, brothers, We’ll make it to the promised land.” You could almost hear Desmond Dekker or Bob Marley singing this lyrics on a reggae rhythm. This gave some ideas to Findlay Brown who released an acoustic/soul version of “Promised land”. Really worth listening.

The story does not stop here, I promised to bring you back to the dancefloor and the French hyped remixer Pilooski made a more current-electro edit of the Findlay Brown version (available on the B-side). That’s how you get back to the dancefloor.
