EFE reports: Alfonso Cuarón will offer a master class in cinema at this year’s International Film Festival of Marrakech.  Now in its ninth edition, the Festival International du Film de Marrakech will take place between 4 and 12 December. Also offering workshops are American director Jim Jarmusch and Australian cinematographer Christopher Doyle (best known for his work in Hong Kong cinema).  Jaramusch, Doyle, and Cuarón’s workshops will take place 8th, 9th, and 11th December respectively.  Read more.

HR also reveals that Cuarón has shown interest in directing upcoming thriller Hanna.  In development since 2007, the film “centers on a 14-year-old Eastern European girl who has been raised by her father to be a cold-blooded killing machine.”  Atonement-director Joe Wright is currently in talks to direct.  Read more.

El director de Atonement, Joe Wright, está en negociaciones con el estudio Focus Features para hacer un thriller de acción denominado “Hanna” el cual se rumora tendrá la participación de Danny Boyle y Alfonso Cuarón.

Heat Vision describe a la cinta como algo entre “La Femme Nikita” se cruza con “Jason Bourne” (me refiero al estilo de la película) y trata de la historia de una niña de 14 años del este de Europa que ha sido criada por su padre para que se convierta en una máquina de matar de sangre fría. En la movie, la chica se va con una familia francesa, crea amistad con la hija de ellos y disfruta de su adolescencia, pero de repente es llevada de vuelta al mundo de su padre y descubre de que tiene unas habilidades para matar gracias a que estuvo en un campamento de la CIA, ahora, ella debe de pelear para volver a ser libre.

Los guionistas que trabajaron en este film so Seth Lochhead y David Farr. No han dicho cuando la quieren comenzar a filmar.

Uma amizade aparentemente improvável entre Steve Lopez (Robert Downey Jr.), um jornalista que busca histórias que lhe encham a própria vida, e Nathaniel Ayers (Jamie Foxx), um sem abrigo muito especial, resignado à sua arte maior - a música - e à sua condição mental, transforma The Soloist num dos filmes mais emotivos que eu vi nos últimos tempos. O filme resulta de uma história verdadeira, contada por Steve Lopez na sua coluna do jornal LA Times, desde 2005, dando mais tarde origem ao livro The Soloist: A Lost Dream, an Unlikely Friendship, and the Redemptive Power of Music, base para o argumento do filme de Joe Wright. Como facilmente se depreende, tudo aconteceu rapidamente, quase como os laços que os dois homens criaram entre si, com base na mais importante premissa da amizade: aceitar o outro tal como ele é.
A música deu o mote para o encontro dos dois e tornou-se no fio condutor de uma caminhada bonita pelos meandros da mente humana, com particular enfoque na esquizofrenia, a doença que persiste na vida de Nathaniel e que ele parece ter receio de combater. Aliás, nem Steve Lopez, nem o argumento do filme tiveram qualquer intenção de mudar a vontade  do génio por detrás da doença… não houve por isso um final especialmente  feliz para esta história, mas o final humanamente possível. A cidade de Los Angeles ganhou também uma visão mais telúrica – a grandiosidade dos prédios num contraste profundo com a imensidão de pessoas doentes e desalojadas, que por ali deambulam, tantando resistir a um mundo solitário, sem tempo para detalhes, inconvenientes ou desassossegos. O jornalista assegurou a história de um deles, mas muitas histórias deverão precisar de ser contadas.

Do filme guardo os brilhantes diálogos, a simbologia, a cenografia, a belíssima banda sonora e os inúmeros detalhes, que nos obrigam a pensar na vida e no que há de mais importante para sermos felizes. Neste caso, percebemos a força e o poder da amizade e da música.

Vale a pena ver o filme, conhecer e seguir a história de Steve Lopez e Nathaniel Ayers.

Quem me acompanha aqui no blog ou me conhece pessoalmente sabe que sou superexposto a quase todos os filmes que eu quero assistir. Trailers vistos a exaustão. Matérias e posts lidos em tudo que é lugar disponível na internet. Com O Solista, foi bem diferente. Nada li, nenhum post anterior foi feito para o blog. Nem na lista dos filmes que queria ver na semana entrou. Com isso, entrar a esmo naquela sala e me deparar com uma das melhores experiências cinematográficas dos últimos tempos, rendeu a surpresa do ano.

O Solista centra sua história em duas personagens. Steve Lopez, colunista do LA Times que descobre numa praça o músico Nathaniel Ayers Junior, esquizofrênico, sem-teto e dono de um genial talento. Lopez com o intuito de gerar uma matéria se envolve com a história de Nathaniel e, gradativamente, as vidas vão se entrelaçando e se interligando de maneira definitiva.

A genialidade dessa história toda fica por conta de Joe Wright, Robert Downey Jr e Jamie Foxx. O primeiro, diretor do filme, consegue conduzir essa história sem cair na simples piedade por Nathaniel e criando, com rara sensibilidade cenas lindas. Cada diálogo entre os dois, por mais entrecortado e truncado que sejam pelas óbvias dificuldades, é recheado de aulas de relacionamento humano.

Além disso, a visão da obra é clara: é um filme sobre música. Ela é o centro das atenções e nos provoca as melhores imagens. Closes nas mãos de Foxx, nas cordas dos instrumentos e as diversas apresentações das orquestras, envolvem o filme e, por conseguinte, o espectador, imerso nesse universo clássico de Ludwig van Beethoven (a obsessão de Nathaniel).

Marcante também na obra é a cena com a primeira apresentação de orquestra que Sr. Lopez leva Nathaniel. Ao invés de mostrar as emoções dos atores, o diretor optou por uma experiência com linhas abstratas e cores, sempre acompanhando o que é tocado. O resultado é uma vivência ímpar da música, com a clara sensação de que a musica toca o espectador não apenas auditivamente, mas também visualmente. Uma liberdade poética linda e impossível de se descrever.

Por fim, Jamie Foxx e Robert Downey Jr. Dois grandes nomes, dois talentos (Downey Jr, por sinal, dando claros sinais que está de volta melhor do que nunca). Interpretações fortes, personagens com alta carga dramática, e um incrível poder de retenção da atenção do espectador. E, o que é mais difícil de ver, com alto grau de realismo. Por mais que sejam estereótipos a principio – o jornalista em busca da personagem perfeita e o esquizofrênico – ambos, graças ao seu talento, acabam conferindo uma humanidade sem tamanho e deliciam o espectador.

Grata surpresa do ano, O Solista é dos filmes com maior sensibilidade dos últimos anos. Sem dúvida alguma, uma experiência indispensável para quem gosta de um bom filme. Impecável.

Eu sabia que ia gostar desse filme logo que vi o trailer.

Além da história do Nathaniel,

o que vale mesmo é o encontro dele com o Mr. Lopez. E, convenhamos, a coragem e a sensibilidade desse último para não ficar restrito a uma boa história.

Esse encontro ele descreveu assim:

There are people who tell me I’ve helped him. Mental health experts who say that the simple act of being someone’s friend can change his brain chemistry, improve his functioning in the world. I can’t speak for Mr. Ayers in that regard. Maybe our friendship has helped him, but maybe not. I can, however, speak for myself. I can tell you that by witnessing Mr. Ayers’s courage, his humility, his faith in the power of his art, I’ve learned the dignity of being loyal to something you believe in. Of holding onto it, above all else. Of believing, without question, that it will carry you home.

Infelizmente (ou felizmente?) há muito pouca cena desse filme no Youtube. Duas me emocionaram muito: quando o Lopez entrega um cello para o Nathaniel e a emoção do sem-teto ao ouvir o ensaio da orquestra. Eu não tenho palavras para descrever.

Mas vale a pena correr para os cinemas para ver. Afinal, como diria o Nathaniel, Beauty is art; music is beauty.

PS1: O Jamie Foxx está fantástico e passa toda a paixão do personagem (o Mr. Lopez, certa vez, disse para a ex-mulher: I’ve never loved anything the way he loves music.)

“O mérito vai todinho para Wright que sabe extrair as mais belas e acachapantes imagens de um material sem o menor fôlego narrativo”

A função de um diretor em um filme é de longe a mais importante e a que mais oferece possibilidades.

Existem muitos casos em que uma boa direção consegue subverter um roteiro fraco e transforma-lo em um bom filme, afinal, seu trabalho é traduzir em imagens a trama tecida em palavras.

Joe Wright não é apenas um ótimo tradutor como sabe elevar um texto à potência máxima de qualidade quando o traduz para as imagens. Provou isso em Orgulho e Preconceito dando todo um frescor à adaptação de Jane Austen e em Desejo e Reparação onde criou uma das narrativas visuais mais interessantes da década baseado na obra-prima de Ian McEwan.

Em seu primeiro filme em solo americano, o jovem inglês caiu em uma armadilha. Se antes Wright tinha como aliados dois brilhantes e inspiradores textos, aqui ele enfrentou exatamente o oposto: sua missão foi traduzir em imagens a péssima adaptação de uma autobiografia extremamente egoncentrista e paternalista. A roteirista Susannah Grant não só tratou de enfatizar tais elementos em seu roteiro, como intricar a trama de tal forma que não se pôde sequer saber com clareza a que o filme se propõe.

Narrando a história verídica de Steve Lopez, famoso jornalista de Los Angeles, que se comove com o dom de Nathaniel, um morador de rua que mostra paixão e talento absurdos para a música, o filme nos faz questionar o tempo todo o seu propósito. Não há foco, não há rumo. A única coisa que fica clara é que o sentido primário foi a auto promoção e Robert Downey Jr. não consegue nos convencer do contrário na pele do jornalista bondoso.

Wright erra usando sua técnica de potencialização – a trama pedia o máximo de contenção e sutilezas, já que Grant usa todo tipo de artíficio narrativo para contar a história de Lopez. E dá-lhe fluxo de consciência misturado com flashback justificativo.

O Solista é, portanto, um filme que funciona em fragmentos, e o mérito vai todinho para Wright que sabe extrair as mais belas e acachapantes imagens de um material sem o menor fôlego narrativo. São momentos sublimes, alguns grandiosos, outros de composição visual simples porém elegantemente conduzidos, que salvam os sofríveis 117 minutos. Uma pena. O verdadeiro solista aqui é Joe Wright, brilhante e talentoso, tocando em seu instrumento uma partitura composta por notas incapazes de formar melodia alguma. Entretanto, suas duas grandes performances estão disponíveis para locação e merecem ser aplaudidas de pé todas as vezes que forem “escutadas”.

Questa domenica sono andata a vedere la mostra “Lagrimas de eros” al museo Thyssen di Madrid. Ci sono 120 opere esposte per raccontare l’eros e i suoi risvolti nell’arte religiosa e non. La mostra prende il nome dal libretto di uno dei più grandi esperti sull’argomento: George Bataille.

Ma che cos’è l’eros e quali altri temi sono relazionati? In realtà l’eros, un po’ come il tema della morte. Sono due di quei pochi argomenti che fagocitano quasi tutto. Ogni cosa sembra relazionata con questi grandi temi trasversali e ogni comportamento umano sembra inspiegabile se non si mette in relazione con queste due entità, che in questa mostra, si fondono insieme: eros e thanatos.

Secondo un bellissimo articolo di Mario Vargas Llosa, uscito proprio domenica 1 su El Pais, l’eros rappresenta il momento culminante e risolutivo di quel conflitto che da sempre oppone natura e cultura. Da un lato abbiamo appunto la cultura e le caratteristiche dell’essere umano, e dall’altra, l’istinto animale, l’indole irrazionale e distruttiva di thanatos. L’eros ha saputo tenere a bada l’istinto animale e trasformare l’atto sessuale in qualcosa di più creativo, di condiviso, qualcosa che diventa opera d’arte grazie ai rituali, ai dettagli e alle piccole raffinatezze. Ed ecco come nascono tutte queste opere d’arte. Però la verità è che le opere non sono erotiche in sé. E’ anche lo sguardo a renderle tali, perché l’erotismo non è qualcosa che etichetta per sempre e inequivocabilmente. L’erotismo nasce nello sguardo dello spettatore su una cosa o una persona. Di qui, la convinzione che anche una donna o un uomo “brutti” (perché non rispettano i canoni della bellezza perfetta), possano essere erotici. Siamo noi che erotizziamo la realtà ed è per questo che l’idea di erotismo così come l’atteggiamento nei confronti della morte, sono grandi temi che se analizzati ci restituiscono una storia della nostra civiltà che si evolve, che cambia i suoi costumi e che investe di significati differenti, oggetti ogni volta diversi.

La mostra inizia logicamente dalla base dell’erotismo che è quell’equilibrio così precario tra tabù e trasgressione. Secondo Bataille, la proibizione illumina ciò che è proibito, con una luce che è insieme sinistra e divina, una luce religiosa. Di qui la sua convinzione che la battaglia tra eros e thanatos si spieghi solo alla luce del sacro, dell’arte religiosa e dei miti rappresentati nell’arte.

Per questo tutta la mostra è organizzata in forma di percorso attraverso i grandi miti di cui si è servita l’arte erotica. Inoltre, il percorso è pensato per essere un’evoluzione o, involuzione, nella spirale degenerativa dell’eros.

Iniziamo con l’INNOCENZA, tra le onde del mare, nella spuma, da cui nasce, vergine, la bella e intoccata Venere, la cui forza erotica è legata proprio alla purezza, alla possibilità di macchiarla e di trasgredirla. Si passa allora alla TENTAZIONE. Qui è forte la proibizione e il rischio di trasgredirla che ben conosce Sant’Antonio, ritiratosi ventenne nel deserto come eremita, e che viene tentato dal maligno con, tra le altre cose, una bellissima donna nuda. Ma altre immagini di tentazioni vengono dalle numerose rappresentazioni delle Sirene e delle Sfingi, figure duplici tra l’animalesco e l’umano, mostri in grado di portare gli uomini alla follia. La tentazione, sfocia allora nel SUPLIZIO DELLA PASSIONE, il momento in cui è più visibile il sacrificio insito nella tentazione e la violenza dell’erotismo, che diventa dominazione e sottomissione con le figure mitiche di San Sebastiano trafitto dalle frecce e di Andromeda, offerta al mostro marino ed incatenata in mezzo ai flutti.

La mostra poi sembra darci una tregua più pacifica. Arriviamo alle delizie della COPPIA, un duo che si fonde in una cosa sola. Ma in realtà, questa fusione implica una violenza, che sfocia nella passione cannibale e vampiresca del “divorare l’altro” per fondersi totalmente.

In ultimo, tocchiamo il punto più cupo dell’arte erotica. Oggetto dell’erotismo, diventano, infatti, i corpi morti, che scatenano grande attrazione. Esemplari sono i casi delle commoventi scene di Apollo disperato per aver ucciso, per sbaglio, il suo amato Giacinto o quelle del pastore Endimione condannato ad un eterno sonno dalla bella Venere che vuole rimanere ad ammirarlo eternamente. Infine, simboli per eccellenza, sono i corpi inerti, ma pieni di potenza erotica, di Cleopatra e di Ofelia, le belle suicide che giacciono immobili a beneficio del voyeur, che può infine godere indisturbato della loro bellezza.

E qui finisce il percorso, ma merita accennare anche ad una piccola riflessione sull’acqua, che così dolcemente abbraccia la bella Ofelia. Dall’acqua, è iniziato il nostro percorso con Venere, e nell’acqua termina, con l’amata di Shakespeare. L’acqua è la materia prima dell’erotismo, così come della vita stessa, come ben si apprezza dal video di Bill Viola: “Incarnation”. Una coppia, nuda, avanza in un ambiente di interferenze, verso di noi. Poi ad un tratto passa una barriera, che presto si scopre essere una cascata d’acqua e luce. Lentamente e impauriti, i due amanti passano la barriera d’acqua e si guardano intorno. Lei, all’inizio più timorosa di lui, è quella che per più tempo è attratta da questa nuova realtà, è curiosa, guarda fiera verso di noi, verso la realtà. Lui invece, da coraggioso esploratore, si tramuta improvvisamente in un ometto impaurito e trascina prontamente indietro anche la donna. Lei sembra opporre un po’ di resistenza, ma poi torna indietro, oltre la cascata, nel mondo delle interferenze.

Non so se l’opera di Bill Viola rappresenti parte di quell’arte moderna dell’eros che Vargas Llosa tanto disprezza nel suo articolo. A me quest’opera sull’incarnazione è piaciuta, anche se, è vero che si distanziava un po’ dal tema dell’erotismo. Sono d’accordo con Vargas Llosa che malgrado gli sforzi del curatore, l’arte moderna dimostra di mancare di quell’erotismo tanto sottile che c’era ancora fino ai primi del ‘900. La spiegazione di Llosa è che la modernità, eliminando gradualmente i freni e le censure, ha annullato anche la trasgressione dell’eros, banalizzandolo, portandolo sull’arena della quotidianità, sulla piazza pubblica. E la banalizzazione dell’eros, ha fatto sì che emergesse il suo lato più volgare, ha lasciato via libera all’istinto animale che per anni era stato imbrigliato dalle proibizioni ma che, proprio per questo, ci aveva spinti a sfruttare la creatività come arma per superare ogni tabù. L’erotismo quindi, non sembra poter esistere senza la trasgressione. Ricordo una battuta di qualche filmetto di amori adolescenziali in cui un’amica diceva all’altra che il 50% del bello del sesso era parlare di sesso. Ed effettivamente, questa è una componente forte soprattutto agli inizi, durante l’adolescenza, quando si comincia a parlare di qualcosa di cui non si potrebbe parlare, di un tabù. Oggi invece, di sesso si parla ovunque e quando Vargas Llosa cita il fatto che l’eros sia arrivato nella piazza pubblica, non posso fare a meno di pensare alla tv italiana. Ci si può quindi ancora emozionare per l’infrazione del tabù di parlare di sesso alle amiche? Forse no, forse è uno dei tanti argomenti quotidiani e noiosi che siamo stufi di vederci propinare attivamente o passivamente dalla pubblicità e dalla tv. Mi ricordo anche di un intervento ascoltato ultimamente al festival di Internazionale, dove interveniva la regista iraniana, Firouzeh Khosrovani, e raccontava come a lei piacessero molto di più le feste dei giovani a Theran perché essendo tutto proibito, l’evento diventa più eccitante, più trasgressivo e c’era la costante tensione dell’essere scoperti.

Un’ultima nota la dedico ad un fatto che mi ha lasciata un po’ dubbiosa. Dopo aver visto la mostra presso il Thyssen sono uscita arrabbiata per il fatto che, a parte una statua e poco più, tutte le altre opere d’arte rappresentavano corpi di donne o nel caso di San Sebastiano, un uomo simbolo dell’amore gay. Infastidita, mi chiedevo se la spiegazione fosse che noi donne non eravamo considerate meritevoli di contemplare dei corpi erotici di uomini o se forse, era stata una scelta un po’ limitata del curatore. O forse, il fatto che nella storia gli artisti siano stati sempre più uomini che donne, ha fatto si che il corpo della donna fosse maggiormente rappresentato. Solo visitando l’altra parte della mostra, quella che si trova presso il palazzo della Fondazione Caja Madrid vicino a Callao (peraltro gratuita), mi sono tirata un po’ su di morale, e non per il video di Beckam che dorme, ma per i bei quadri e le statue di Endmione, il pastore amato da Venere. E finalmente, anche il nostro eros di donne, ha potuto avere delle soddisfazioni, dopo essere state private di San Sebastiano e di Giacinto, entrambi simboli dell’arte erotica omosessuale. Rimane in ogni caso il mio dubbio sulla minor presenza di arte erotica dedicata alle donne. Propendo però per una leggerezza del curatore, perché non posso fare a meno di ricordare alcune bellissime sculture di guerrieri ed eroi mitici, che sono custodite per esempio in Italia, sparse per i vari musei. Ricordo inoltre una scena bellissima del film Orgoglio e pregiudizio di Joe Wright. Il film finisce senza neppure un bacio tra i due amati, solo carezze caste e sguardi. Eppure, la passione non manca. Il regista decide di esprimerla con le stesse limitazioni che aveva avuto Jane Austen nei primi dell’800: con il divieto di fare riferimento a qualunque scena di eros. Per questo, tutta la passione erotica, si concentra in due scene del film. La prima è quando la protagonista, Elizabeth Bennet, sogna di essere su una scogliera con il mare in tempesta e la natura in subbuglio. La seconda si svolge durante la sua visita alla casa di campagna di Mr. Darcy. La giovane, e ormai innamorata Elizabeth, si aggira silenziosa tra le statue di marmo bianco della galleria d’arte della villa. E’ estasiata, gira attorno ai corpi nudi, e noi con lei. La telecamera sfiora i solchi del marmo, gira intorno, si avvicina e si allontana, esita in alcuni punti. E vediamo la giovane Bennet quasi arrossire mentre, sicura e curiosa, avanza in esplorazione di quei corpi. E la visita termina con l’estasi di Elizabeth di fronte ad un busto del suo innamorato, Mr. Darcy. L’ultima scultura di Mr Darcy, serve solo per dare infine, un’immagine tangibile del destinatario e della causa di quella potenza erotica accumulata nelle immagini precedenti, tra le statue di marmo mollemente sdraiate. La scena, per me, è magistrale e, ricordarla, mi mette in pace con il pensiero che esista anche dell’arte erotica destinata alle donne.

Consiglio quindi vivamente la mostra, nelle sue due parti, al Thyssen (8 euro) e alla Fundación Caja Madrid (gratis). E’ curioso vedere la gente che qui a Madrid visita una mostra del genere. Io sono stata domenica, all’ora di pranzo ed era pieno di bambini con i genitori e di tante vecchiette che passavano curiose tra queste immagini erotiche e borbottavano divertite quando nei cartelli espositivi si paragonava l’orgasmo alla “piccola morte”. Ci sarebbe stato lo stesso pubblico per esempio a Milano? E sarebbe costata anche lì 8 euro, prezzo pieno e 5, ridotto, con una metà della mostra in una sede (Caja Madrid) che sempre offre entrata gratuita? Lo dudo mucho.

Five Stars out of Ten Stars (*****/**********)

Perhaps I didn’t give Cracks the biggest of chances, going into the film only hours after I had emerged from my screening of Precious, another film which had knocked me sideways. In any case, it was with mild irritation that I trooped in to watch the screening of Jordan Scott’s (daughter of Ridley) first film. The thing actually turned out to be some gala-London Film Fest type screening, and we were treated to the lovely main star Eva Green turning up and giving a few smiles before the film started. This piqued my interest slightly.

Cracks is the story of a group of young girls at an incredibly stifling, prim, and strict boarding school in the 1930s. Juno Temple plays the natural leader of her social group – a young actress I remembered with fondness as Lola in Joe Wright’s Atonement. Her character is a precocious young thing, quite clearly in love with the mysterious, beautiful, Katherine Hepburn-esque diving master of the school, lovingly referred to by all as Miss G (Eva Green). The arrival of a new Spanish aristocrat pupil throws the happy balance of Temple’s character into turmoil as the affections of Miss G are transferred.

What can I say about the film? Well, it’s quite lovely to look at. Eva Green is absolutely beautiful, and it’s shot with glamour and ease. The countryside is beautiful and romantic. The setting and landscapes, coupled with the eroticism of Green and the young girls, imbues the film with a certain gravitas I don’t think the source material or directorial ambition alone possess. Scott seems quite capable of creating and sustaining an effective tone of mistrust, excitement and intrigue, yet she doesn’t seem at all aware of what to do with this.

What was this film about I ask myself? Was it the rise and fall of the mysterious Miss G? I never felt we were fully given enough of the character to know what to think one way or the other. This itself was something I quite liked. That was until a rather hammy breakdown scene towards the end. The unravelling of the character killed Green’s performance completely for me. In fact I would go so far as to say it was a ridiculous and simply quite bad piece of acting. And for the character and film a big “so what?” moment, if ever there was one.

Alternatively then, was the film about the girls, and their soulless existence at the school? Again, this setup was an intriguing one, and there were more than a few interesting characters amongst the schoolgirls you could have given a jot for. Yet I still came away having never really invested in anyone.

What the film is really about I’m afraid I’m still none the wiser. It hints at rather a lot and then delivers very little. It looked bloody lovely though, and it was quite gripping in parts. Another irritating sticking point though was the fussy orchestral score, which seemed to dip in and out of the proceedings almost constantly, to no real affect, other than to distract. Style over substance really, the whole thing.

The Telegraph reported Friday that director Joe Wright (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement) has been tapped to direct the film and that Keira Knightley has won the lead role. However, Celebrity Mania has reported that she has NOT officially been chosen for the role and that her agent had not known anything about production of the film.

Rumors are still ablaze that the actress has beat out Scarlett Johansson for the role and that she is taking singing lessons in preparation for the part. Celebrity Mania confirmed that those lessons are actually for a London play called “The Misanthrope.”

I have to say, My Fair Lady is in my top 3 Audrey Hepburn films (next to Funny Face and Breakfast at Tiffany’s). It was brilliantly done and I can see why some people get upset when a great movie gets re-made. But I have to say that if it’s going to happen, Keira Knightley would be the best Eliza Doolittle that I can think of. Aside from the fact that I think she looks an awful lot like the gorgeous, Ms. Hepburn, she has very similar mannerisms. She is graceful, sophisticated, oh and British. I’ve never heard the girl sing but if she’s taking lessons now, that’s probably all the prep she’s going to need for singing ”Just You Wait ‘Enry ‘Iggins.”  (Conversely, I don’t care how  cool Scarlett thinks she is for covering Tom Waits, her singing makes me want to shove a pencil in my eardrum). And I’m sure she could pull off a Cockney accent, being y’know, British. I can just imagine her now saying “The rain in Spain stays mainly in the plains” about a hundred times and sounding exactly like Ms. Hepburn.

This was a prayer from pastor Joe Wright at the Kansas House of Representatives in 1996. While I’m sure the assembly expected a general blessing, what they got was a bold prayer from a man who stood firm in the truth of God’s Word. In the following weeks pastor Wright’s church logged over 5000 calls in regards to his prayer, only 47 were negative. Paul Harvey aired the audio of his prayer on his “The rest of the story”. That broadcast received more responses than any other in the history of the show.

Vor langer Zeit angekündigt, scheint sich aus dem einstigen Gerücht nun ein ernsthaftes Filmprojekt gemausert zu haben. Keira Knightley wird unter der Regie von Joe Wright als eine weitere hohlwangige Eliza Doolittle ihre Gesangskünste in einer Neuverfilmung von MY FAIR LADY erneut unter Beweis stellen. Wie es heißt, hatte sie nach einem internen Wettstreit mit Scarlett Johansson die Rolle ergattert, was wahrscheinlich auch auf die bisherige Zusammenarbeit von Regisseur Wright mit Keira in den gemeinsamen Filmen Pride & Predjudice und Atonement zurück zu führen ist. Prof. Henry Higgins soll übrigens von Daniel Craig verkörpert werden, das Drehbuch verfasste Emma Thompson. Schade, dass letztere sich mit ihrem Besetzungswunsch für Hugh Laurie als Prof. Higgins offenbar nicht durchsetzen konnte.

update: Joe Wright wird nicht “directen”, inwiefern die restlichen Besetzungsmeldungen zum Film gesichert sind, ist schwer einzuschätzen.

24-year-old Kiera Knightley has beaten Scarlett Johansson to the part of Eliza Doolittle in a new film adaptation of My Fair Lady.

Joe Wright, who worked with Knightley in Pride and Prejudice, has been chosen to direct the film.

In August it was reported that Knightley had been forced to compete with Johansson, 24, for the role.

“I have two actresses as potential Elizas, one British, the other American,” said Sir Cameron Mackintosh, who is producing the film with Duncan Kenworthy, at the time. “You’d know their names, but I’m not letting on.”

Last week, Kenworthy said: “I think Keira would be absolutely fabulous in it.” Emma Thompson is writing the script for the film, for which Daniel Craig has been mooted as a possible Professor Henry Higgins.

Wright had been due to direct Cate Blanchett in Indian Summer, a film about the relationship between Countess Mountbatten of Burma and Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, but as previously reported this had been scrapped. The Indian government had expressed concern about its portrayal of the alleged love affair.

I’m starting off a new section called ‘Stuff the government does that it shouldn’t be doing’.

First up, writing film plots.

Indian Summer, the much-hyped Hollywood project about the alleged romance between Edwina Mountbatten and Jawaharlal Nehru, has been cancelled with the director blaming the wrangling between the Indian Government and the studio as the reason.

“We were in between a rock and a hard place. The Indian government wanted us to make less of the love story while the studio wanted us to make more of the love story,” said director Joe Wright.

I’m all for free speech and expression, so the government interfering in a film that probably won’t even be released in India is rather annoying. Further, it hurts the businesses that would’ve benefited had the crew shot in India, and hurts India’s image in movie-making tourism.

Stupid government. If you really want to write a movie, go $!#!@# yourself.

Indian Summer (Estate Indiana), il progetto per l’attesissimo film di Hollywood basato sulla presunta storia d’amore tra Edwina Mountbatten, moglie dell’ultimo vicere’ inglese in India e Jawaharlal Nehru, il primo premier indiano, e’ stato cancellato. La ragione, stando a quanto ha fatto sapere il regista, starebbe nel mancato accordo tra gli studi e il governo indiano. Lo riporta l’agenzia di stampa indiana Press Trust of India. ”Il governo indiano – ha spiegato il regista Joe Wright – voleva che ci occupassimo meno della storia d’amore, al contrario gli studios volevano incentrare il film soprattutto su questa”. Il film, che avrebbe avuto come protagonisti Hugh Grant e Kate Blanchett nei ruoli di Lord e Edwina Mountbatten, ha avuto problemi sin dall’inizio. Il governo indiano infatti aveva chiesto di poter visionare la sceneggiatura riservandosi di dare eventualmente semaforo verde al progetto solo in un secondo momento. Basato sul romanzo di Alex von Tunzelmann intitolato ”Estate Indiana: la storia segreta della fine di un impero”, il film avrebbe dovuto ripercorrere i piu’ importanti eventi della storia dell’India al tempo della conquista dell’indipendenza, focalizzando l’attenzione sulla caduta dell’ultimo vicere’, Lord Mountbatten nel 1947 e sull’ascesa al potere di Nehru. Ma il fulcro del film, nelle intenzioni della produzione, avrebbe dovuto essere proprio la passione tra la moglie del vicere’ e Nehru. Le riprese del film, destinato ad uscire nelle sale nel 2011, avrebbero dovuto cominciare il prossimo anno. Della storia d’amore tra Nehru ed Edwina Mountbatten si e’ occupata anche la figlia di quest’ultima, Pamela, nel suo romanzo ”l’India ricordata”.

Film studio Universal has cancelled historical drama Indian Summer, which was to star Cate Blanchett according to the BBC.

The decision to scrap the film – due to be shot in India – was mainly down to budgetary constraints, according to trade paper Variety.

Atonement director Joe Wright was to make the movie about the last days of Britain’s colonial rule of India.

Both Wright and Blanchett will remain attached to the project for the foreseeable future, Variety added.

Blanchett had been cast as Edwina Mountbatten, wife of Lord Mountbatten – the last viceroy of the British Indian Empire who oversaw the country’s transition to independence in 1947.

Wright told Variety there had been creative differences between the film’s producers and the Indian government.

“We were in between a rock and a hard place,” he said.

“The Indian government wanted us to make less of the love story while the studio wanted us to make more of the love story.”

The Soloist is the story about a reporter (Robert Downey Jr.) who meets an extraordinary street musician (Jamie Foxx) and procedes to write a column on said musician and why he is homeless despite his potential. As the movie progresses, a sort of relationship grows, and the movie manages to lose track of what it’s talking about pretty early on.

The narrative is such a mess; lacking pace, running long, focusing on different aspects at different times without managing to tie them together or say anything of importance about the important subjects it tries to take on. For the first 20 minutes it seemed to be about the power of journalism and the written word. Then it changes tack and becomes about how the homeless-situation is a disgrace. Suddenly it changes tack again, revealing just how mentally ill Foxx’ character is and it apparently seems like the criticism is on the American Health system for not picking this guy up. Then, at random intervals, it seems to ignore absolutely all these issues and just focus on the beauty of music and the power of music to drown out the city noise in a way very reminiscent of city symphonies. This part is actually the one that works best on its own, but none of this is woven together and it all becomes a jumbled mess.

Strongest of all, weirdly, comes the allegory of Steve Lopez (Downey Jr.) as God and Nathaniel (Foxx) as man, which shines through the entire film through small details as well as the ramblings of Nathaniel. The scene with Lopez sitting outside LAMP spinning his keychain around, from which there is hanging a miniature globe, for instance made me smile. Had the rest of the film been competently constructed, without the use of unnecessary (every single one of these could have been ommitted without the film losing anything whatsoever) flashbacks and too many thoughts none of which are tie d together, this allegory may have been the sort of thing that pushes a film over the top from great to excellent. This is not the case, however, as the film is only ever dragged from OK to decent by excellent performances and some good symbolism. Too much more could have been done here. I’m not sure it is even OK to make a movie that says “look at all these homeless people, this is a disgrace” but neither offers any explanation as to why this situation has occured or any means of resolving it. What, then, does it contribute? Not much.

El Solista

Algunos directores optan por adaptar Best Sellers o cualquier otra literatura al cine. Muchas veces se obtienen fenómenos como Código Da Vinci o nacen películas de culto como El Padrino. Joe Wright, director de grandes películas como Orgullo y Prejuicio (2005) y Atonement (2007), es asiduo de esta fórmula. ¿Pero qué pasa cuando el cine es insuficiente para representar aspectos y sensaciones que sólo la literatura puede ofrecer?

El solista, reciente película del director británico Joe Wright está inspirado en el libro del mismo nombre del articulista de Los Ángeles Times, Steve López (Robert Downey Jr.), el cual escribe historias de personas que tienen que aportar algo a la sociedad en Los Ángeles.

Un día tratando de buscar la una historia para su artículo, se topó con Nathiel Ayers (Jamie Foxx), un músico vagabundo entusiasta de la obra de Beethoven. La conversación que tuvieron lo llevó a escribir de aquel encuentro atrayendo la atención de su público; lo cual obligó a López a buscar a Nathiel por toda la ciudad y así poder conseguir más información sobre su vida.

El libro del López narra todos estos encuentros, las conversaciones, de cómo un músico que estuvo a punto de formar parte de la Orquesta de Nueva York, terminó pidiendo limosna en las calles de Los Ángeles.

Esta película es todo un reto para Wright, en primer lugar porque es su primer trabajo en cine que no es de época y en segundo lugar porque el tema envuelve en sensaciones relacionadas con la música, el arte y la locura, aspectos que quedan opacadas en el filme y bien libradas en libro; lo cual provoca que el director británico caiga en la confusión de tesis, dándole giros al hilo conductor de la película que nunca llega a ninguna parte.

Lo interesante, rescatable y aplaudible de la cinta, es la versatilidad que tiene Wright al crear cada escena, cada una es un pequeño video clip con una estética maravillosa, una armonía técnica que trae como resultado una cinta que explota únicamente dos talentos: el trabajo del director y la innovadora fotografía de Seamus McGarvey.

Por cierto, se extrañan esas secuencias coreográficas sin cortes de más de diez minutos que solo Wright puede lograr.
