A certain Maxim Litvinov, People’s ex-Commissar (Minister) of the foreign affairs, slept with his revolver to commit suicide when they come for him. He did marry a British writer when he fled to England back in the tsarist time. Herr Stalin damped that Jew in 1939 to befriend Comrade Hitler.
When his troops marched to Moscow, the Commies sent Litvinov to the US as an ambassador to suck American and British “constituents’” money for the war efforts. That prominent Jew got great respect in the West and the access to the president’s ear any time.
   For the same reason, during the war Comrade Stalin initiated the Jewish Anti Fascist Committee consisting of the top Jewish actors, writers, a minister, a deputy minister, scientists and other celebrities – all dedicated, veteran communists. The dictator even allowed them to publish a Yiddish newspaper. The Committee excelled in writing for the foreign publications and got the capitalistic aid.
   Actor Solomon Mikhoels, the head of the Committee, had a phenomenal success in the USA, met Albert Einstein and convinced some Jewish nuclear specialists that by helping the Soviets they would help the Nazis’ victims. The scientists became the Soviet informers.
Yet, the American Jews’ noble intentions turned to the kiss of death. Comrade Stalin became suspicious: Amerikakers too easily agreed with the Soviet Jews.
   As the war progressed, the Jewish losses became evident. The Committee received devastated Jews’ numerous appeals and knocks on the door. The members wanted to resettle Jewish refugees, reestablish Jewish collective farms, revive the Jewish cultural life, and collect eyewitness testimonies about the Holocaust and the Jewish combatants. The Committee complained to the government about the discrimination, mistreatment, and hostilities toward the returning Jewish survivors. Thus, the members “slandered the Soviet reality.”
After SSoviets needed the Committee no more, they sank it, along with all the Jewish cultural institutions, into the grave. Literally. Understandably, the American imperialism’s Jewish agents and vipers headed the Committee. Litvinov avoided all that only because he had prudently died of a heart attack before.
   The state security arrested, tortured, and prepared the members, headed by Solomon Lozovski, a deputy minister of the foreign affairs, for a show trial. They allegedly demonstrated their cosmopolitanism, bourgeois nationalism, disloyalty, and planning to set up a Jewish Socialist republic in the Crimea to serve Yanks’ interests.
In 1949, China fell to communism, and the USSR ended the American nuclear monopoly. The Cold War turned to the hot one in various localities. The Yanks and Soviets supported the opposing sides and fought each other in those brush wars by proxy.
The supreme paradox was that when the Jews’ moment of supreme crisis came and they faced the end of their existence on earth, all governments, except a handful of Scandinavian tiny nations and Holland, had closed their doors to them. By a gigantic effort of organization, a million Soviet Jews moved from the path of the German invaders out of Poland and Ukraine into southeastern Russia and Siberia too, by the way. How many more would have escaped if England had opened the Palestine gate to them? No sacrifice was required. The Jewish private finds and organizations would accept the responsibility of sheltering and feeding the fellow-Jews.
When England fought for her existence, thirty thousand Palestinian Jews voluntarily joined the British army, fought and died in Africa. Yet, when the German abattoirs had gone into production, Brits limited the Jewish immigration into Palestine to fifteen thousand a year. Struggling against the mortal enemy, the British ruling class found the time, men and ships to hunt down every ship bringing the Jews to Palestine. Thousands of Jews perished in the Mediterranean.
Few nations match the generosity and nobility of the USA in taking into herself the oppressed, homeless, and wretched, nurturing and giving them human dignity. Yet, in 1939, the State Department instructed the Coast Guard to prevent landing of ship St Lois with her 907 Jewish refugees.
During 1933-43, the US admitted only 476,930 aliens, of whom 165,756 were Jews. Six million Jews died while the Yanks admitted only 16,000 a year.
During the World Slaughter II, Herr Stalin did not question where the Soviet Jews’ loyalty laid. They fought for their lives. For them, unlike Katsaps, Khokhols, Tar Tars and others, betrayal and giving up were out of the agenda. Out of 500,000 the Red Army’s Jews, 200,000 (including most Roma’s male relatives of the drafting age) fell in the battles.
During Germans’ fast initial leap, the Brest-Litovsk fortress and the Hango garrison became the heroic resistance islands in the occupied territories only because Jewish officers Chaim Fomin and Arseni Arkin commanded.
Michael Plotkin, a Jew, was the first Soviet squadron commander bombing Berlin in August 1941. In the battle for Moscow, Jewish generals Dovator and Kreiser took leading roles. So did the latter and Jewish Generals Baskin, Weinrub and Vinokur in the Stalingrad battle. There Field Marshal von Paulus surrendered his pistol to Vinokur. Similarly, in the battle for Berlin, Jewish Generals Plaskov and Krivoshein dazzled.
In general, Jews (including Roma’s relatives, neighbors, and family friends) were more educated then the rest. Thus, they heavily represented the artillery, armored corps, army engineers, the air force, Navy, and the medical corps. The Red Army’s surgeon-general was Jewish Major-General M. Vofsi (accused in the anti-Semitic “Doctors’ Plot” in 1952). The most famous Jewish navy commanders were Admiral Trainin and submarine Captains Fisanovich and Bograd.
Jews comprised only 1% of the population. Yet, decorated Jewish soldiers took the fifth place among the Soviet nationalities. One hundred and forty five Jews got the highest award, Hero of the Soviet Union. David Dragunski and General Shmushkevich became twice the Hero. In June 1942, Shmushkevich, the Soviet air force commander, was executed (albeit not as a Jew, but in a general purge).
Jewish women were the Red Army’s nurses, medical orderlies, radio operators, snipers, and pilots. Pilots Polina Gelman and Raisa Aronova became Heroes of the Soviet Union. Roma’s mom worked at a field hospital too. His aunt was in charge of a hospital-on-train bringing the wounded from the front to large cities in the rear.
The true number of the decorated Jews was much greater because some hid their Jewish identity not only in the German concentration camps, but in the Red Army too – it had anti-Semitic elements. That made easier for the anti-Semitic propagandists, especially in the rear, to lie that the Jews took no part in the war efforts.
The Soviet Jews’ participation in the war led to absurdity. To demonstrate the occupied Baltic countries’ integration into the USSR, the government created national Lithuanian and Latvian units. Because available Lithuanians’ number was too small, those countries’ Jews, not Lithuanians and Latvians, were initially the majority there. Four Jewish soldiers of the Lithuanian division became the Heroes of the Soviet Union.
Yet, when Israel, obliged to the USSR for its creation, political and military support against Amerikakers’ will and arms embargo, joined their camp, Herr Stalin thought that Soviet Jews, the most reliable against Hitler, would betray in a conflict with the USA. Thus, Soviet Jews allegedly turned out to be the keepers of the Zionist scientific trends, and rootless cosmopolitans, i.e., citizens of the world, those without kith.
While the Jewish survivors lived in the refugee camps and settlements, Christians pretended the tragedy had never happened. The Pope expressed his opposition to, and the Brits tightened the Jewish immigration into Palestine. The US stood quietly behind her own quota system.
In 1947, to the amazement of most those present, Andrei Gromyko, deputy foreign minister heading the Soviet delegation to the United Nations, dwelt there on the Palestine problem’s urgency, Jews’ sufferings during the war and the survivors wandering in Europe.
Zionist leaders had contacts with the Soviets since the German invasion of 1941. During the war Stalin, Roosevelt, and Churchill had agreed to hand over Palestine to the Jews. Soviets merely thought a Jewish state would get the Brits out, and since many Israelis were socialists, they would join the Soviet Block.
Yet, the British government needed a key to the Middle Eastern oil and fomented the Jewish-Arab discord, armed the Arabs and disarmed the Jews. The British commander of Jordan’s Arab Legion delightfully watched his Arabs torturing and mutilating dead and dying Jewish soldiers.
After the Jews experienced so much death, they decided to die quietly no more. Comrade Stalin supported their armed struggle and branded the Arab resistance as the British imperialism’s function. He provided Israel with arms via Czechoslovakia and economic assistance via Poland, permitted Jewish emigration from Eastern Europe to Israel and allowed the Red Army’s Jewish officers to join Israel’s army.
But the ungrateful kosher pigs of Israel allied themselves with the West. Therefore, in 1948, Ilya Ehrenburg, a writer and official Soviet Jew, wrote in Pravda (Truth) newspaper that Soviet Jews should have nothing to do with Israel, a remote, foreign capitalist state. Golda Meir, the Israeli ambassador, made the final blow. Moscow’s Jews enthusiastically welcomed her.
Whereas national repression, such as Muslims deportation from the Northern Caucus and the Crimea were secret, with no political campaign, the state anti-Semitic campaign started openly in January 1949. It was not like tsars’ pogrom. Comrade Stalin called this campaign “anti Zionism” and “anti cosmopolitan” because anti-Semitism compromised socialistic and international principles.
In the best Soviet tradition, the writers headed by K. Simonov, whose solely one nice verse Roma recited in the front in 1942-43, demanded to prosecute the cosmopolitans. Later the weathercocking chameleon went ahead with a leading newspaper’s headline (Jewish) Killers in the White (doctor’s) Smocks and with driving B. Pasternak, Soviet writer and Nobel Laureate, to his illness and death.
Thus, Simonov proved that not only French of questionable repute offer quite good stuff, and in broad daylight too. He became Stalin’s highly decorated favorite, Stalin’s Prizes laureate, a Communist Party Central Committee candidate, and a high-ranking official of the Writers’ Union. After the dictator’s death, Simonov pleased next party bosses.
Never mind that communism itself stands for nations’ cosmopolitan merging and assimilation. The only defense was a proper so-called nationality listed in the passport – an internal identification document.
Back in 1940, Stalin’s Nazi comrades-in-arms complained of the Jews’ preponderance in the Soviet press. The wise and sagacious friend of all nationalities jumped over his Jewish obstacle in a day:
“Substitute the reporters’ Jewish names with Russian pen-names.”
Four years after Fuhrer’s death, the media’s most important task became to decipher the Jews’ Russian pen names and to prove that the Jews stuck their stinking scribbles to the great Russian literature and art. Of course, ones who write might have other bad habits too.
The regime quietly fired most Jews from responsible jobs as “rootless cosmopolitans” and ignored their Marxist honors and decorations. Once again, well-meaning Jews’ own ideology betrayed them.
The state of workers and peasants blossomed year after year, but only the media saw the fruits. The humane Communist party leaders could face neither the devastation, nor the ruined industry and agriculture anymore.
“The most important thing is to establish the priority of our glorious Russian scientists and inventors in all fields,” the government solemnly heralded. Soon that campaign became a butt of vicious jokes, the shortest one had only one word – communism.
From November 1948 onward, the authorities liquidated the Jewish culture leftovers, arrested the Jewish authors, artists, actors and journalists, dismissed Jews from leading positions, introduced a quota system in colleges, scientific institutes and factories up to zero in some instances.
Tsarist Kiev had 15% quota for the Jewish university students. Now they did not dream even about 1.5%. Besides, Tsarist universities accepted Jewish high school gold medalists. The Soviet universities still did not exam them, but set up so-called interviews to weed out the Jews.
To get the gold became out of question. Roma knew many Jews that got two “good” marks out of twenty-five subjects listed in the school-leaving certificate (one “good” qualified for the silver medal). Later he himself got one good mark and had to fail the entrance exams therefore.
It was not as bad as in KKKanada, for example. In the 1930s, Toronto’s public schools would not hire Jewish teachers, no Jews were allowed at St. Michael’s and Trinity Colleges. The University of Toronto’s School of Medicine had a strict quota.
In 1937, Jewish ball players defeated the British ones in Toronto’s Christie Pit Park. British and Italian Fascist sympathizers tried to beat the Jews up. Yet, the Jews and their Ukrainian sympathizers won the battle known as the Christie Pit riot, or massacre.
In 1949, Toronto Star’s editor said to a Jewish job seeker that they already have a Jew on staff. That was still okay because Toronto Telegraph ran articles about the unclean race, and Toronto’s Sunnyside Beach had signs No Dogs, No Jews Allowed.
The Soviet regime was still above all that. It only wiped out all the victories of the revolution, robbed the Jews of their dignity, turned them again into less than second class citizens and stopped just short of extermination. The regime hustled important Jews off to prisons and detention camps for “redevelopment and reorientation”, if they survive. While the listed Jews comprised only 1.5% of the population, Moscow’s notorious Lubyanka prison contained five times more Jews, than Russians.
Sadism stroked the society everywhere. If there were no guilty ones, they were appointed. The people watched, as the forum’s crowd did the lions who blessed the Jewish Christian meal they were about to take. The spectators were not against each other. They were merely for themselves.
Most folks developed their own division of people. Dr. A. Chekhov saw everyone as lean and stout. The black advocates see as black and white, the socialists – as rich and poor, the feminists – as mean man and good women, the French Canadians and Marxists – as exploiter and exploited, Muslims as believers and infidels, Jews – as Jews and gentiles.
More than ever, late Carl Radek, a prewar notorious Jewish enemy of the people, was right when he said:
“We have two parties – one in power, another – in a prison.”
As Soviet citizens’ life worsened, anti-Semitism, the great simplifier, became the national policy.
Ukrainians greatly welcomed all that and fired Jews from the positions in foreign affairs, defense, transport, press and the like. In Kiev, non-Jewish managers often had a Jewish deputy who, in fact, was in charge and did all the work. In that respect, a quarter century earlier, Stalin’s list of appointments amazed Lenin:
“None of Jews? It won’t work. Russians are lazy, will start, but won’t finish. We are specialists to chat, but not to organize.”
After Lenin’s death, the regime milled his “Jewish party” along with millions of Jews and other nationalities who had absolutely nothing to do with that party.
The Jews were their countries’ best citizens, got top results in sciences, engineering, medicine and management. They studied, worked, and defended the country better than the rest and the latter detested them for that.
Uneducated riffraff hated the talent. A talent is a threat to any totalitarian regime. The cosmopolitan campaign succeeded. Repression and persecution devastated literature, social, biological, agricultural, and chemical sciences. Once in Germany physics became Jewish. Now in Russia cybernetics and genetics became Jewish at worst or bourgeois at best.
The huge xenophobic campaign was against everything foreign. Prominent people who failed to show the right attitude were dead wrong to cow tow to the west, “dead” being not the figure of speech. Some talented Goyim suffered too. They were cosmopolitans without kith or kin not by blood, but by the spirit.
The Soviet leaders, good and capable – good for nothing and capable of anything failed in the Jewish physics though. At that time, best Soviet specialists developed nuclear weapons. The rejects taught students. The Moscow University became especially active against not only the kosher theory of relativity, but the Goyim quantum theory too. The defeat of the best would come on the special meeting devoted to physics in March 1949.
Comrade Beria, the fine, energetic, hairsplitting organizer in charge of the nuclear bomb development, knew well about his fate in case of the project failure. He asked Igor Kurchatov, the scientific project leader, about those damned theories and got his response:
“The Nazis failed in the bomb because they rejected those theories too.”
Abraham Joffe, the Jewish founder of the Soviet physics, bravely argued:
“Physicists will work either on the nuclear matters, or on fighting cosmopolitans.”
They did not arrest him – just fired from his managing position. The bosses’ predicament was that the American and British scientists sympathized, cooperated with the USSR, and thus set up all Soviet intelligence work on the nuclear matters. The arrest of the famous Soviet colleagues would discredit the government and diminish the foreign scientists’ contribution. Prudently, Comrade Beria lowered the priority of cleansing the cosmopolitans from the Zionist physics and spared the bomb talent:
“Let them work so far. We’ll always have time to shoot them later.”
Those Jews who were not cosmopolitans were AmeriKKKan imperialists’ agents.
Back in 1948, Comrade Stalin warned that the war with the US was inevitable. He had air bases built opposite to Alaska to intercept American bombers on the way to the Soviet centers and to strike first. Now 22 Soviet fliers became the Heroes of the Soviet Union and Chinese infantry routinely fought Yanks in Korea. Russia lost 335 planes and 200 fliers there. Thus, the fight for peace would demolish the earth to pieces.
The Kremlin was convinced that Americans would start the war in 1954 or earlier. Having sorrowful experience of the German sudden invasion, Stalin decided to start first this time.
While Western Europe is defenseless, the USSR and China have enough territory and people to absorb the losses, he reasoned. His pre-emptive nuclear strike will crash Yanks and turn capitalism to kaput-alism. Those kakers used to hide behind somebody else’s backs. They will capitulate in panic fear. Since American Jews set the tone there, the Soviet ones comprise the fifth column.
“Any Jew is a nationalist and an American intelligence agent,” Stalin said in 1952. “Jews think they are indebted to Americans for saving their nation.”
So, on one hand, the Soviet Jews were James Bonds whose activities required undoubtedly some courage. On the other hand, they were cowards who bought their war decorations in the Central Asia. Such contradicting rumors propagated at the same time.
In most countries, cash manages their citizens’ fate – no buck, no luck. In the USSR, a document managed a Homo Sovieticus’ kismet. The fate coddled neither the Soviet Jews, nor ethnic Germans and Finns, nor Crimean Tartars, nor Caucasian Muslims, nor many other smaller minorities. Yet, the Soviet regime was not the heir of the Third Reich and did not examine the voluntary marking of the Jewish males’ middle extremity.
Tsarist Russia had so-called yellow, white and wolf cards.
The yellow card was a prostitute’s ID printed on yellow paper. The Soviet Union gave freedom to her working women and eliminated the yellow cards.
The white card was a military draft exemption on medical grounds. No man might get a job without his military card received after his service.
Tsarist Russia’s wolf card was a certificate denying access to state jobs and institutions on the grounds of a person’s political or moral infidelity.
The vitality of a tree and a Homo Sovieticus was not in their top, but in their roots. The most crucial questions of the standard questionnaire of personal data, one might not get a job, nor enter a college without, were the name and so-called nationality – one’s bloody origin.
In fairness, the questionnaire was not a Soviet invention. One fine night called appropriately the St. Bartholomew’s Day, Catholics marked the doors of Huguenots’ (the French Protestants) houses with chalk crosses to massacre the inhabitants. (Russians call that pious event Bartholomew’s night – the massacre’s right time.)
Times have changed since dark Middle Ages. In our bright educated times certain characters do such pious deeds in the broad daylight.
The Soviet Union had three documents that could serve as the wolf card. The internal passport listed so-called nationality which was not such, but a breed like a German shepherd dog.
Homo Sovieticus was like Elephas – an elephant. Not because of the healthy appetite (as environmentalists would say), or the gluttony (as the rest would do). There are two existing species of elephants: Elephas indicus and Elephas africanus – the Indian and African elephants appropriately. An Elephas indicus born in the Moscow circus or the San Diego zoo remains an Indian elephant, neither Russian, nor American one.
So was a Soviet citizen. If parents were listed as, say, Ukrainians, Jews, Poles or Germans, so were their children, no matter the place of the birth. The Soviet system identified Jews not as religious group, but as a breed, even if they were Christians.
Roma’s kosher neighbor had Jewish parents and wife for that matter, but was a Byelorussian. A soldier during WW2, he got into and broke out of a German encirclement in Byelorussia. He joined partisans and enlisted himself as a Byelorussian. Luckily, nobody checked out his fashionable Jewish cutoff.
Partisans were not exactly Jew-lovers and even attacked, robbed and murdered Jews. Moscow forbade accepting them too. Besides, the problem was that a non-Jewish partisan was an able-bodied person. Most Jews, however, fled to the forests with the heavy burden saved from Germans – the old, women, and children. In general, the Jews had to prove their ability and readiness to fight, to obtain their own weapons before the partisans permitted them to join. That is why many Jews posed as gentiles or established their own partisan units to defend their own family camps against both the Germans and the non-Jewish partisans.
In the fall 1942, Moscow created the partisan supreme headquarters and sent political instructors to reorganize the partisan units, to disband the Jewish ones, to distribute its members among the rest, to replace the Jewish commanders and to incorporate non-Jewish partisans into the Jewish units.
When the Red Army liberated those areas, the partisans joined the army in the drive to Berlin.
For a while Roma’s own brother, the blue-eyed blond offspring of his Jewish mother and father, listed himself as a Russian named Konev. He changed his surname when he got into orphanages during the war.
In general, listing as a Jew in the brotherly family of the Soviet people was not a crime. It was the largest kosher swinishness. The brothers of the Soviet nations’ happy family considered the Jews as cousins. The crime was to be an ethnic German, Finn, Crimean Tartar and a Chechen. Earlier the Soviet government deported them out of harm’s way into her remote areas.
However, a smart fellow can profit even from a wormy apple. Take Sir Isaac Newton, for instance. Once he was sitting under an apple tree and thinking perhaps why God did not arrange watermelons to grow that way. Then a wormy apple dropped on his head – the good ones do not drop easily. Then Isaac understood Creator’s wisdom. Thus, the wormy apple turned on the gravitation theory.
Similarly, out of any kosher swinishness, a Jew could cut out a little bit of ham. In 70’s, the Jewish part of Russian Jews permitted them to immigrate to Israel, but their Russian part did not allow them to assimilate fully there and even somehow assimilated Israelis instead. Since that time, a Jewish spouse in the USSR became not an extravagance, but a means of conveyance.
Who is a Jew was a question not only in Russia. In Israel, it is still the question. In 1938, everything was clear in Switzerland too. The friendly Germans agreed to apply a rubber stamp “J” to the passports of their Jews because German nationals were not required entry visas for Switzerland. Swiss thought that none of Jews was too many, and shut out the most vital escape route.
Besides, Soviet passports listed citizens’ propiska (a residence permit) in major cities to gain access to work, housing, and the medical care. The militia handled both the passports and propiska. They prosecuted persons living at an address not matching the residence permit.
Nobody might get a work without a workbook listing all jobs, including temporary, from the very beginning of one’s working life. Besides, one had to fill in a standard questionnaire listing his nationality (i.e., breed), party-membership, the party reprimands and warnings, the personal data of the close relatives and the list of all jobs held. In addition, one needed a reference signed not only by the manager, but by the trade union (the membership was compulsory) and party officials of the previous workplace.
For most Soviets, the nationality was on the fifth place – the fifth line of the questionnaire. Directed by Rolan Joffé, him of past films like The Mission, and more recent fiascos like Captivity. I wouldn’t be surprised if this doesn’t even make it to video in North America.
