CAMPUS SAFETY TIPS

Street crime is on the increase in most large U.S cities. It’s also growing on campuses and in small communities. Schools and colleges that receive public funding are required to post the crime statistics at their campus. No college is immune to crime. In fact many crimes are more common on college campuses than off. So wherever you are, keep yourself and friends safe with an awareness of your surroundings. These campus safety tips will help you.

• When leaving your dorm or apartment, make sure that all doors and windows are locked – including the main building entry and exits.
• Keep an eye out for anyone who is loitering or hanging out around your home, campus, after school work or your car. College students are much more likely to be stalked.
• Check out around your car as you walk up to it. If there is a van parked on one side of your car get in on the other side.
• One campus had a series of attacks where the attacker would hide under vehicles and then slash the victim’s Achilles tendon with a knife. The victim was unable to run away. Check under the other cars as you walk up to your car.
• Don’t carry large sums of money.
• If possible, travel with another person. This is especially true after dark.
• Carry a personal alarm that will draw attention in an emergency and scare away an attacker.
• When carrying a purse or wallets, only place three or four one dollar bills placed inside. Credit cards, currency, driver’s license, and keys should be carried in a coat pocket or concealed, possibly in an inside zipped pocket. Other possible options include special security belts and stash pouches are available for this purpose.
• At night, travel on well-lighted and well-traveled streets. Avoid unlighted areas. Walk in the middle of the sidewalk and never loiter in deserted areas.
• Walk on the side of the street nearest to oncoming traffic. If accosted by someone in a car, run in the direction opposite of the way the car is headed.
• Be aware of people who approach asking for directions or the time of day; keep a polite but safe distance. One ploy that to be wary of is someone asking to use your cell phone to make an emergency call, but there doesn’t seem to be any emergency at hand.
• Men should consider carrying a second wallet containing a few one dollar bills and old expired credit cards, which are normally destroyed or discarded. If you are mugged, give the suspect the second wallet and take a mental note of a good physical description of the suspect.
• If you feel someone is following you, go to the nearest occupied residence or building and ask for assistance.
• If you are confronted with a dangerous situation, cry out for assistance. Yelling “FIRE! FIRE!” instead of “HELP!” will generally bring faster attention. WARNING: Just don’t do this in a crowded movie theater, night club or other area where it might cause panic.

When you get home, particularly after dark, don’t hang around at the entrance of your residence. Make a quick check for mail or newspapers, and go in right away. If you feel something is out of place, don’t go in, go to a friend or neighbor’s house and call for police assistance.

I read this story on Sunday about a woman who saw a policeman struggling with an attacker and grabbed her stun gun and went to his aid.

Tanisha Cross never thought the stun gun she received for Christmas would come in handy so soon.

Cross said she was headed to Wal-Mart in Lithonia with her mother when she noticed a DeKalb County police officer being attacked by a suspect.

“I just told my mom pull over, … let’s try to help,” said Cross.

The 20-year-old mother, who received the stun gun as a gift from her husband, said she kept it in a diaper bag.

Cross said while others gathered to watch, she sprung into action.

“I went straight for my kid’s diaper bag and I got it and asked it if he [officer] wanted me to do it and he said, ‘Yea,’” said Cross.

Cross said the officer had a hard time defending himself because the attacker had taken the officer’s radio and managed to rub pepper spray in the officer’s face and eyes.

Jolting the attacker, Cross’ timing couldn’t have been better. Cross said she stunned the suspect in his arms and legs.

Cross said she stunned the attacker to where the officer regained his composure and fought back until a security guard came to their aid.

“He’s brave,” she said. “He did his best to keep him from his gun. He handled the situation very well. I was just glad I could help him,” said Cross.

Cross doesn’t consider herself a hero.

“I’m just a bystander trying to help do the right thing,” said Cross.

Here’s a heart warming story that took place in Jacksonville, Florida. This took place after a robber tried snatching a 77-year-old woman’s purse at a Kangaroo Express.

A “one-man crime spree” was halted by a 77-year-old woman with a can of pepper spray, Jacksonville police said Wednesday.

Torre Sebastian Harris, 20, was arrested Tuesday about 5:30 p.m. shortly after a robbery at a Kangaroo Express store in the 8300 block of Baymeadows Road. Chief David Stevens of the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said a man entered the store, pointed a gun in the clerk’s face and demanded money.

The contents of the cash register didn’t satisfy him, so he tried to snatch a customer’s purse, according to a police report. The victim, Gladys Gehrig, fought back and sprayed the thief with a container of pepper spray attached to her key chain.

“She got him good in the face,” Stevens said.

Police picked Harris up a short distance away.

Stevens said he was linked to six other robberies throughout January on the city’s Southside by witness identifications and surveillance footage.

Harris was charged with 14 felonies and held in lieu of bail.

The Kubotan, or self defense keychain as it is sometimes called, can give piece of mind at a minimal investment because it gives its handler maximum security right in the palm of their hand. 

Kubotans are carried by thousands of people.  They are used by law enforcement officials, experienced martial artists and regular people alike to subdue would be attackers, quickly and effectively with little or no technical training.  Kubotans are small, usually measuring around 5.5 to six inches and can be made from a variety of materials including aluminum and polycarbonate; most are gnarled for easier gripping during use. 

The kubotan is likely a descendant of the yawara, a slightly larger martial arts weapon that is often used in pairs to subdue an assailant in a similar fashion.  The kubotan is simply a smaller, more user friendly version that serves a dual purpose… 

The kubotan is a keychain, so in the many instances where an attack occurs as the would be victim is approaching their car; they’ve already got their method of protection in their hand.  

The two most basic and effective ways to use the kubotan in self defense are: 

Striking – the objective here is to hit your assailant hard with the end of the kubotan while it is tightly grasped in the fist, the more boney the area of contact on your attacker’s body, the better.  It wouldn’t be uncommon for a powerful, well place strike to break the bone of an attacker, immediately ending the threat of further attack.  Though contacting bone is an ideal way of thwarting an attack quickly, a swift hit on virtually any area of the body will do much more damage than that of a hand strike alone. 

The second method of defense would be more akin to pressure point attacking, where the victim would push or dig the end of the kubotan into a vulnerable area of the attacker’s body causing tremendous pain, but without the risk of serious injury.  This method of defense isn’t quite as complicated as it sounds, you don’t need to have a degree in physiology or even know the body’s pressure points, you just dig the end of the kubotan into an area of the body with as much force as you can – it can be the ribs, the neck, the back of the hand, the groin – anywhere. 

Other defensive uses have been explored, like swinging the kubotan by the ring to strike an attacker or by grasping the kubotan and swinging the keys to strike at an attackers face, though these methods seem a little more risky to the victim, if the kubotan is dropped the attacker may be able to get a hold of it and use it as his own weapon. 

Over the years the kubotan has undergone a bit of evolution, spawning the “ninja keychain” that has a severe point on one end and two spikes designed to attack the eyes or throat, but the original baton version seems to be the wisest choice.  In a panic situation, the simplest form of defense is usually the best. 

A kubotan also gives the ultimate in reliability.  It will never run out like a can of pepper spray, and you’ll always have it at the ready because it’s attached to your keys. 

A kubotan is one of the most versatile and economical methods of self protection available, generally costing a fraction of what you would pay for most personal protection items, and it can easily be concealed in the hand or carried in a pocket or purse.  While most other methods of self defense, like edged weapons, tasers, or firearms are regulated or even illegal, the kubotan is perfectly legal and with minimal practice it truly can provide maximum security in the palm of the hand.

You can use a kubotan without pepper spray if you are better at hand-to-hand encounters,   or you may prefer a kubotan with pepper mace spray.

Safety Tips for Joggers:

Jogging or running for health benefits are an effective way to stay in shape.  The only thing I would recommend to everyone involved in this type of activity is BE SAFE!  Listed below are a number of safety tips to keep in mind while jogging or running.

Know your start and end points and the precise path you are taking before you depart.

Tell a friend or family member where you are running/hiking, the path you expect to take and how long you expect to be.

Always keep your eyes up – don’t look at the ground. If you are passing someone, make eye contact and stay confident.

Always walk or jog against traffic, so you can always see what is coming.  

Listen to what is going on around you – listening to music can not only be distracting, but takes away one of your most valuable defenses.  Take a set of Hot Walkers (Walking weights with pepper spray) with you. Hot Walkers are 1 pound walking weights with pepper spray inside.

Don’t go off the beaten path.  While it can be invigorating to explore off the beaten path, try to do that when you are with a “buddy” or friend.  Don’t explore unknown territory on your own.  Also, parks or marked paths will often have rangers or other hikers/runners on then, and that provides another line of security.

Take a cell phone (I would also recommend a cell phone stun gun) and whistle with you.  These can be used to call for help if you need it.  Turn the safety off, touch assailant with end of stun gun and press the trigger (round button on keypad). Because it looks like a harmless cell phone, it will be easy to surprise an attacker. Remember, the purpose of this stun gun, and all other non-lethal self defense products, is to give you time to escape. Use the cell phone stun gun, then run for safety. Don’t stand around waiting to see if your attacker is going to get back up.
