I’m so looking forward to Alice In wonderland with the inimitably cool Johnny Depp, the delicious Helena Bonham-Carter and chocolate-eyed Anne Hathaway. By the looks of it, it’s going to be brilliantly twisted, of course directed by the awesome Tim Burton, it can’t be anything but twisted!

Huh yeah, read Goldilocks above. And the Frog Prince. And Just like multiply that by 5. I liked you until you asked your Dad for a rose. Couldn’t you just send him to a fucking florist? NO. I will not look at a rose the same way again. Oh and then there was Celine Dion in the Disney mix. You’re starving for haters, are you? Out to kill us all with cliché and weird weird sex. You go girl. Now where’s that fucking knife when you need it? Oh yeah, in my back where you left it.

The Little Mermaid:
I have only one thing to say to you: You’re ALWAYS going to smell like fish.

Fresh of the press are there amazing pieces of artwork from Tim Burton’s upcoming movie Alice in Wonderland. And looking at it, its going to be dark, Burtonesque take on the classic story. I think this will be a great match, as Alice always had a dark side. Or at least I think so, as it always freaked me  out as a kid! Starring Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter and Anne Hathaway as the White Queen this promises to be another piece of art from the hand of Burton. Although we have to wait almost half a year for this one to come out, 5th of May 2009 to be exact, Burtons movie 9 seems to be a more than appropriate snack.

Today, I got away to a Borders store in Athens.  I was getting jittery about not having my books around.  I’d been to the Athens Borders before, so I grabbed a peach fruita and settled in with some great magazines and a book I’d been meaning to read.

As I sat in my big leather chair, sighing over the little pleasures of life – I see Johnny Depp’s photo smiling at me from the magazine stand.  Now, I consider Johnny Depp one of those wonderful pleasures of life, so I looked back – and then noticed several other magazine covers with his picture on them.  I was intrigued and went over to the magazine rack – and saw a lot of pictures of Christian Bale (one of my other guilty pleasures).

I actually realized seeing all the photos of each man on the rack that they were obviously posing.  Not the sweet-smile-I-am-looking-right at-only-you, but the here I am – look at ME smile or smirk as the case may be in Bale’s case.  I really didn’t want to pick any of the magazine’s up and read the interviews.  Both men have movies out and it’s part of the movie contract that they promote the movie by putting themselves out there.  I am not a Pollyanna about Hollywood, but photos have changed – or maybe people have changed.  I enjoy their movies, but maybe I don’t want to know their lives personally.  I used to like Edward Norton until I saw him on a talk show – dull and not particularly amusing or interesting.  I saw Keifer Sutherland on a talk show and he was engaging, laughing and told some great stories – like a conversation – not the look at ME.  I actually liked Johnny Depp’s interview on the Letterman show to promote one of the pirate movies.  Either he was truly humble or he was acting it – but he seemed shy and a little bewildered about the way his life turned out.

Funny, maybe it’s just me.  I can’t get behind the gangster Dillinger – even if Depp plays him – but I love the basic story about John Connor – even though Bale took over the movie role from a small part to the whole part.  I enjoy Bale’s movies because he makes me believe he is the part – The Machinist was downright scary and amazing at the same time.  Equilibrium was stunning – stunts were really good – Batman – a whole different take on an old story.

My favorite Depp film is Secret Window.  I love how we go from one side of the mirror into the other side of madness.  He made me believe in his madness – just like he believed in it.

So maybe I will skip the interviews and the hype (oh, there’s also a book on Dillinger with Depp’s picture on it) and not buy the soft drink cups, and remain a believer in the fantasy these great actors create for me.

As Aragorn says, “There is always hope.”  (and yes, I know it’s Viggo and that whole story is worth another blog and a half.)

E sono arrivato al penultimo giorno della mia elaborazione del lutto; quando, sessantanove giorni fa, avevo iniziato questo diario giornaliero del mio rapporto con questa fase di sofferenza, non avrei potuto pensare che avevo calcolato giusto, che proprio in coincidenza con la fine di queste dieci settimane sarebbe accaduto qualcosa che chiudeva definitivamente il mio rapporto con lei.

Così è stato.   Ultimo atto, battuta finale,  sipario, applausi.

Prima la porta era chiusa, adesso ho girato la chiave nella serratura, e ho sentito un tlack.  Dopodomani sarà un altro giorno, e comincerà una nuova fase anche del mio blog, forse mi dedicherò alle settimane a tema, con post meno frequenti di questi che mi sono impegnato a scrivere giorno per giorno; forse farò un lungo viaggio nel passato, forse scriverò semplicemente quello che mi capita, quando ne avrò voglia.

Intanto, però, veniamo al tema di oggi.   Il miglior e il peggior regista di tutti i tempi.    Il migliore regista contemporaneo, il mio preferito se non altro, è Tim Burton, e in questa settimana dedicata alla filmografia fondamentale dell’era mediatica non poteva mancare una giornata dedicata a lui.   Avrei potuto scegliere tra tanti film che ho molto amato, La sposa cadavere per dirne uno, ma alla fine la mia scelta è caduta su Ed Wood, del 1994, un film minore ma godibilissimo interpretato dal solito attore feticco di Tim Burton, Johnny Depp.

Ed Wood è un personaggio realmente esistito, un regista di film di serie C, definito il peggior regista di tutti tempi, amante delle donne, con cui qualche volta condivideva il guardaroba, autore di capolavori trash come Glen or Glenda, Bride of the Monster e soprattutto Plan 9 from Outer Space: è stato l’ultimo film interpretato da Bela Lugosi, in cui vengono mescolati alieni, vampiri e morti viventi.  Un insieme di assoluta incongruenza che però avrà molti seguiti, e da parte di chi avrebbe avuto molti più soldi a disposizione del povero, simpatico Ed Wood. Che come si vede nel film di Tim Burton, per far volare i suo dischi volanti usava dei fili, tragicamente visibili anche dopo il montaggio.

Tim Burton gli rende omaggio in maniera eccelsa; e oggi cercherò, nei miei limiti, di rendere omaggio sia a Tim Burton che ad Ed Wood.  Non indosserò maglioncini di angora, come quest’ultimo ma vivrò tutta la giornata un po’ sopra le righe proprio come se mi trovassi in un film di Tim Burton.

Jak udanie spędzić świąteczny wieczór? A na przykład oglądając ciekawy film. Taki właśnie okazał się “Blow” – oparta na autentycznych wydarzeniach historia Georgea Jung’a – jednego z największych przemytników kokainy w Stanach Zjednoczonych.

Kiedy na wstępie pojawia się nazwisko Depp, to mogę być spokojny o wysoki poziom fabuły danego filmu. A jak do tego dorzucimy Penelope Cruz – to nie dość, że jest na czym oko zawiesić ( ) – to jeszcze uzyskujemy niezwykle ciekawy i profesjonalny duet aktorski. Film oglądało się z jakąś dziwną swobodą, a przecież przedstawiał sprawy handlu narkotykami na kilogramy i miliony dolarów.

Jak się zaczęło, co było potem, jak potoczyły się losy Boston George’a – przekonajcie się sami podczas dwugodzinnego seansu Ja na koniec podzielę się ciekawą filmową sentencją:

“Niech wiatr zawsze wieje ci w plecy,
a słońce rozjaśnia twarz.
A wiatr przeznaczenia porwie Cię w taniec z gwiazdami”.

So I’m going to be watching the Watchmen on IMAX in a few weeks and up until now I didn’t think there was much in the way for the movie geek in me to look forward to – apart from Avatar (More on that later). What’s the big blockbuster this year? Transformers 2? Fuck that, robots blowing shit up AGAIN? I was fine with he first fix. Curiosity killed, thanks. And Obviously Fuck Michael Bay anyway.

But then this morning. Michael Mann saved my year:

Johnny Depp. Christian Bale. Tommy Guns. On DIGITAL FILM!

This is porn in my eye.

Next to James Cameron, Michael Mann is the most visually innovative filmmakers working in Hollywood today. When the cynical masses mocked the graininess of DV – what did Mann say? “Fuck that. It looks cool”

2009. Public Enemies – the man was right.

Shaky-cam and Dv might look amateur anyone elses hands. Mann just does this shit right. And when its done right, it give a whole new feel to familiar themes – case in point: ’30s Cagney-gangsters shot doc style? Hells yes please.

I fucking love Michael Mann movies, mostly for one reason: Mood. Few artists across the board can achieve mood, its intangible. I’m not, like, talking about movies being able to make you laugh or cry, I’m talking about a subtle shift in tone that not only delivers a shock, gets you to jump your seat or shit a little bit – I’m talking about when a shot lingers a little too long, just enough to make you feel unsettled and uncomfortable (Manhunter). Films that rather than letting the trailer do the thinking for me (Transformers) have the story unfold before me in the theatre (Collateral) Movies which has style sexier and smarter than most and still have the balls for a summer blockbuster release date (Miami Vice). And I liked Miami Vice, that shot from the back of the boat was pitch perfect. And it had Jay-Z on the soundtrack. So fuck you, Miami Vice is immune to your hate.

Public Enemies comes out in July. Around the same time as Transformers 2.

And it will fuck Michael Bay for me.

Da das Fernsehrprogramm ja nicht so unglaublich überzeugend ist (die tausendste Wiederholung von House, CSI und dann noch das Dschungelcamp) musste meiner DVD Sammlung in den letzten Tagen dran glauben. Und diesmal geht es daran die komplette Serie “La Femme Nikita” zu gucken. Das war damals echt eine meiner Lieblingsserien. Erinnert ihr euch noch daran?
