John Ashton, Brit guitarist for The Psychedelic Furs

Distinguished viola soloist Maggie Snyder will perform works of Wagner, Stamitz and Mozart with the Fairmont State University Community Orchestra, conducted by John Ashton, this Sunday, November 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Turley Center Ballroom on the FSU campus.  Admission is free and open to the public.

Maggie Snyder, violist, has performed as a soloist and in orchestras throughout the United States as principal violist, solo concerto player and under well-known conductors. She has performed at the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, and the Seoul Arts Center, and has toured internationally as violist with the Metropolitan String Quartet, and nationally with The Rafferty/Snyder Duo. She recently performed a recital of Russian Premieres of new American Music in St. Petersburg’s House of Composers.

As an orchestral player, she has performed under such leading conductors as James Levine, Yuri Temirkanov, David Zinman, Robert Spano, Leonard Slatkin, James dePriest, Julius Rudel, James Conlon, and Michael Tilson Thomas and at such festivals as the Aspen Music Festival where she was awarded the Time Warner Fellowship. She served as Principal of the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra viola section and of the Meridian Symphony Orchestra viola section in Meridian, Mississippi. In the summer of 2004, Ms. Snyder enjoyed a three week residency with the Daejeon Philharmonic Orchestra in Daejeon, S. Korea, on its subscription concerts and tour to Seoul. As a guest of that orchestra, Ms. Snyder performed coachings and sectionals, performed in live broadcasts, and was part of an Arts Council Advisory Panel for the City of Daejeon.

In 2002, Ms. Snyder was appointed as the viola faculty at the University of Alabama, a post she took after teaching viola at Ohio University, and in August of 2007, she will join the faculty at West Virginia University as Assistant Professor of Viola. She has given master classes, clinics at youth symphonies, and performances at universities and top music schools throughout the country. She earned a Master of Music and Graduate Performance Diploma from The Peabody Conservatory of Music, where she was Assistant to Victoria Chiang and received awards for outstanding string playing. She earned a Bachelor of Music from the University of Memphis, where she received a National Pressar Scholar Award. In 2001, Ms. Snyder was a semi-finalist at the Primrose Memorial Scholarship Competition in Chicago. Her principal teachers have been Victoria Chiang, Heidi Castleman, and Lenny Schranze. She has participated in masterclasses with and studied with such esteemed teachers at James Dunham, Jeffery Irvine, Roberto Diaz, Joseph de Pasquale, Laurence Dutton, and Richard Field of the Baltimore Symphony, and has coached chamber music with members of the Juilliard, Cleveland, and Tokyo String Quartets and prestigious collaborative artists like Benjamin Pasternak and Robert Macdonald. She has won grants from Peabody Conservatory and from the University of Alabama, and will be published by the University of Alabama Press. Ms. Snyder was violist of the Omega String Quartet in the summer of 2006, an ensemble in residence at the Lutheran Summer Music Festival, where she also taught viola. Ms. Snyder joins the faculty of the Brevard Music Festival this summer, 2007.

Ms. Snyder is very active in her community, holding offices in the Alabama State Chapters of MENC and ASTA. She is currently the Immediate Past President of the Alabama Orchestra Association, where she served on the board of the Alabama Music Educator’s Association, the state chapter of Music Educator’s National Conference. She was born into a musical family and began her serious studies of music at the age of 3. She grew up giving concerts with her family both in the United States and abroad and continues to concertize with her siblings, mother, and other extended musical family members on the yearly family New Years concert in Memphis. In 2005-6 Ms. Snyder and her sister, Harpsichordist and Juilliard DMA candidate Alexandra Snyder, received special recognition on their New Years Concert from the Congressman from Tennessee, Harold E. Ford.

Esse é daqueles filmes que fazem um paralelo especial com coisas que vi e vivi, no caso o filme foi lançado no mesmo ano do casamento de minha irmã, com quem eu tinha uma ligação de profundidade absoluta. Foi o ano da escolha de Hughes para entrar na vida adulta, assim como o foi de minha irmã. Provavelmente o filme mais autobiográfico do senhor Hughes, muito se acusa deste ser um trabalho misógino, mas este é um filme em que se foi adotado a perspectiva do homem e toda obra que se propõe a isso tende a ser vista como machista ou algo que o valha, mas isso não tem necessariamente de ser associado a algo ruim, afinal, John Hughes não é Michael Bay e ele transforma essa suposta misoginia em um aspecto importantíssimo no amadurecimento do seu protagonista.

Detroit cop Axel Foley is watching the news on TV when the reporter tells a story that Axel’s friend, Beverly Hills police Captain Andrew Bogomil, has been shot by a tall woman. Axel heads out to Beverly Hills to visit Bogomil in the hospital, and this is where Axel is reunited with Bogomil’s daughter Jan Bogomil. Axel is also reunited with Detective Billy Rosewood and Sergeant John Taggart. Billy and Taggart decide to let Axel help them find the woman who tried to kill Bogomil, even though abusive police chief Harold Lutz has been deliberately trying to find a reason to fire Billy and Taggart. Axel, Billy, and Taggart soon discover that the alphabet robberies, a series of robberies that have been going on in the area, are masterminded by weapons kingpin Maxwell Dent, and Dent had sent his fiancee Karla Fry to try to kill Bogomil because Bogomil had been after Dent. With this information, Axel, Billy, and Taggart try to find Dent and Karla.

Usually the World Series ends just weeks before Election Day, which really matters. So it is good to have a little escapism beforehand. Whether your favorite team wins or loses is really not important in the great scheme of things, like life and death or  war and peace. For the losers in baseball, there’s always next year.

Jackie Earle Haley

1. The Bad News Bears (1976) with Walter Matthau, Tatum O’Neal, Vic Morrow, Brandon Cruz, and Jackie Earle Haley: A little league team with no talent can’t win a game. Desperate parents hire a former minor league ballplayer, Morris Buttermaker (Matthau), to coach the team. The beer guzzling coach recruits a girl (O’Neal), whom he had previously taught to pitch, and a motorcycle outsider (Haley) to field and hit. They miraculously make it to the climactic game at the end of the season against the Yankees. This one is a lot of fun.

2. Field of Dreams (1989) with Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earle Jones, Ray Liotta, Frank Whaley, Timothy Busfield, and Burt Lancaster: “If you build it, he will come,” says the Voice to the farmer (Costner). Build what and who will come? We learn early that he is supposed to build a baseball field, where he is now growing corn. (The field still exists as a tourist attraction in Iowa.) But we don’t learn exactly who it is who will come until the end. Others who come before the end include a professional ballplayer banned from the game (Liotta), a reclusive writer from the 1960’s (Jones), and a small-town doctor from Minnesota (Lancaster and Whaley). The farmer’s wife (Madigan) has a brother (Busfield) who has an investment firm that wants to foreclose on the farm, because they can’t pay their debts because of the lost acreage used for the baseball field. This fantasy is super special.

3. It Happens Every Spring (1949) with Ray Milland, Jean Peters, Paul Douglas, and Ed Begley: A college professor’s experiment is ruined when a baseball is knocked through a window into his laboratory. The liquid he ends up with gets on the ball, and the prof discovers that the ball now repels wood. He takes a leave of absence and goes to St. Louis to become a major league pitcher. The prof (Milland) is the worst looking athlete you’ve ever seen, and the other ballplayers are the oldest major leaguers you’ve ever laid eyes on; so nothing here can be taken too seriously. The ethics issue of using a doctored ball to get to the World Series never comes up. However, this totally implausible comedy is much more enjoyable than it has any right to be.

4. Little Big League (1994) with Luke Edwards, Timothy Busfield, John Ashton, Ashley Crow, Dennis Farina, and Jason Robards: The owner of the Minnesota Twins (Robards) dies but wisely leaves the team to his twelve-year-old grandson (Edwards). The grandson promptly fires the losing and obnoxious manager (Farina) and decides to manage the team himself. He meets a lot of resistance until the team realizes it can actually win with the kid at the helm. Timothy Busfield makes up for playing the bad guy in Field of Dreams by playing the Twins’ first baseman and power hitter – as well as the love interest for the young skipper’s mom (Crow). Luke Edwards and John Ashton, who plays a coach, are reunited in this comedy after appearing together on television in 1989 as son and father in the much darker I Know My First Name is Steven. This is my favorite baseball film, and the outstanding cast almost makes you believe that this story is possible. This movie reminds you that the most important thing about baseball is that it can be fun. If only the real New York Yankees would relearn that, then it wouldn’t be so enjoyable to see them lose.

5. Max Dugan Returns (1983) with Jason Robards, Marsha Mason, Donald Sutherland, and Matthew Broderick: An impoverished high school English teacher (Mason) is a single mom trying to bring up her son (Broderick) with sound moral values. Her own father, Max Dugan (Robards), abandoned her many years ago and her own son never knew him. On a dark and rainy night, Max Dugan returns! Problem: Max claims that he is dying of heart disease and wants to get know his grandson before he dies. Another problem: Max has a suitcase full of money that he stole from the mob as a dealer at a casino, and he is also wanted by the law. A third problem: Max’s daughter has a new boyfriend (Sutherland), who happens to be a police detective. A fourth problem: Max keeps spending his loot on home improvements, which his daughter has a hard time explaining, considering her income. A fifth problem: Max’s grandson likes to play baseball, but he can’t hit worth squat. Solution: Max spends some of his ill-found wealth hiring Chicago White-Sox batting coach Charlie Lau to teach his grandson the “philosophy” of hitting – and that’s why this qualifies as a baseball film. Not a problem: This is a Neil Simon comedy, so you know you will be in for a good time.

Baseball’s a funny and fun game when a 12-year-old becomes manager of the Minnesota Twins and inspires them to play with the joy of youngsters.

When the owner of the hapless Minnesota Twins (talk about art imitating life) dies and leaves his grandson (Luke Edwards) the team in his will, the 12-year-old decides to manage the team himself. Aside from the obvious headline value of his move, no one seems to like the idea and the kid finds himself battling for his fledgling managerial career. Eventually, however, he wins the confidence of his favorite player (Timothy Busfield) and before long has the team playing like kids: for the fun of it, rather than the money. (Now there’s a concept.) Though billed as a family movie, the saccharine level is high enough to scare off most adults. But kids, particularly baseball fans, will eat it up, as much for the appearances of baseball stars like Ken Griffey Jr. and Paul O’Neill as for the plot itself. –Marshall Fine

Mike Parsons, event organiser, responds to the cancellation of OMM 2008:

Last Friday, the Original Mountain Marathon (OMM) near Keswick, Cumbria, had to be abandoned after torrential downpours caused floods, leaving thousands of competitors stranded.

Over 1700 competitors were unaccounted for overnight and a costly rescue operation, involving the local police, mountain rescue teams and the RAF had to be implemented.

According to the BBC, the rescue mission cost local authorities ‘hundreds of thousands of pounds.’

This led John Ashton, Cumbria’s director of public health, to call for a change in the legal responsibilities for organisers of similar events.

If implemented, this would mean that organisers would have to cover the costs of any avoidable emergencies, which would otherwise fall to the taxpayer.

‘Complete bollocks’

Mike Parsons, innovation director and general manager of OMM, dismissed Ashton’s words as ‘complete bollocks’.

Parsons claims that upon realising he was ‘cornered’ on the subject of insurance, Ashton proceeded to criticise the event organisers’ ‘naivety’.

OMM have rejected claims that they endangered competitor’s lives by not cancelling the event sooner, despite having received severe weather warnings.

Asked if the event would be handled differently in the future, Parsons said, ‘No two sets of circumstances are ever the same.  We had a bad storm in 1998, which we learned from and we’ll learn from this one.’

‘Last week the world of event reporting changed’

‘The story was provoked by a member of the public who was completely unknowledgeable’, said Parsons, ‘they also refused to collaborate before, during or after the event.’

He stated that, ‘last week, the world of event reporting changed’, after information and videos were passed to the media by competitors and members of the public.

Parsons stated that in future events the OMM ‘will ensure that correct information is transmitted to the press’.

The day after the event, Mark Weir, owner of Honister Slate Mines, who provided shelter for over 300 runners, told the BBC: ‘We have come within inches of turning the Lake District mountains into a morgue.’

The BBC reported that OMM have already raised £3000, which will be donated to the local mountain rescue teams who helped the competitors. 

Parsons, could not confirm how much money had been raised but said that an announcement would be made on the website very soon.

What is the Original Mountain Marathon?

The website describes OMM as the ‘premier UK event to test teamwork, self-reliance, endurance, outdoor and navigational skills. The reputation of the event is worldwide and every year we have entrants from between 12-14 countries.

 …Which in laymen’s terms means:

•  A two-day mountain marathon (currently being held in the Lake District)
• The course is 49.6 miles long
• Competitors work in teams of two
• They must carry all of their own equipment and food
• They must navigate their way across the course and camp overnight
• The event started in 1968

Main Story

Ben Affleck är kanske inte världens mest begåvade person framför kameran, men väl bakom visar han vad han går för, och denna film är ett bra exempel på hur bra det faktiskt kan bli.

Satt och skummade lite bland mina favorit bloggar och kom över Sinful Dwarf´s recension av denna film och insåg att jag själv inte skrivit något om den. Något jag direkt kände att jag behövde ändra på eftersom detta är till trots en av favoriterna från förra året.

Det finns mycket med denna film jag verkligen gillade, en sak är tex själva formen filmen berättas i, det är inte den där glammiga guld-vardagen vi får se, utan det är ett verklighetstroget och skitigt Boston, visst det är kanske är lite väl mycket om man nu enbart skall basera detta på inledningsscenerna.

Ser man bortom det och tänker efter så är detta i alla fall i mina ögon en ganska bra uppfattning på hur det ser ut i ett samhälle som sliter.

Huvudkaraktärerna är arbetarklass och bidragstagare, Casey Affleck (jepp, Ben Affleck´s brorsa) spelar en lite smått halvkriminell privatdetektiv, i alla fall såpass småkrim att han har kontakter med den undre världen som ändå accepterar honom för den han är, bortsett från vissa i alla fall. Amy Ryan, spelar en mor vars dotter blivit kidnappad, hon är urfattig, knarkar och lever på soss och bryr sig mer om sig själv än andra. Rollfigur med andra ord, men Amy skall ha all heder för sin instats, en prestation som hon dessutom blev oscar´s nominerad för.

Sedan har vi självklart poliser med i denna film, den utspelar sig ju i Boston, här hittar vi inga mindre än Ed Harris & Morgan Freeman, hade bara en av dem varit med och resten av casten bestått av b-skådisar så hade det ändå varit mer än skäl nog att se denna filmen. Men istället får vi båda i samma film, snacka om “grädde på moset”.

Som om detta ändå inte vore nog… vem hittar vi inte mer i filmen? Jo, “Det. Sgt. John Taggart” från Snuten i Hollywood dvs, John Ashton, är med i filmen. Är ni fortfarande inte övertygade än så vet jag inte vad jag skall locka med, för allt detta är mer än 1-2 skäl nog för att ge filmen en chans.

Filmen i sig påminner om en stil som var väldigt populärt inom genren på 90 talet av någon anledning, kan inte riktigt placera fingret på exakt vad det är som gör det, men känslan finns där och det är exakt det som gör den så bra enligt mig. Filmen bjuder dessutom på lite andra saker som jag inte vill gå in allt för mycket på mer än att den tar lite överraskande svängningar i handlingen vilket också var väldigt populärt på det ljuva 90 talet, tex The Usual Suspect´s eller varför inte Seven.

Oavsett, detta är en film ni bör se. Rekommenderar den varmt, och som sagt detta är en av de filmer från förra året som var och är en av mina favoriter. En riktigt popcorn film men bra handling, bra cast och bra manus. Har faktiskt sett om den en gång redan och den var lika bra då.

“Everyone Wants The Truth… Until They Find It.”

Gone Baby Gone is one of those movies that you watch, you feel kind of urked and then you discuss for a while afterward because it challenges your morals and beliefs. When you ask yourself, “what would I do in that situation…?” your answer will not come automatically, no matter how black and white you think you are.

The movie starts out with 4 year old Amanda McCready’s sudden disappearance from her Dorcester home. Out of desperation, her Aunt [who's not happy with the police's progress on the case] hires a reluctant private eye [Casey Affleck] and his partner/girlfriend [Michelle Monaghan] to help bring her home. At first they turn the case down, but after pleas from the family, they feel obligated to help one of their own. In their search for the girl, they cross paths with some pretty unsavory characters and ultimately the truth, which tears them apart.

This movie takes place in South Boston/Dorcester. Anyone who knows Boston, knows these are pretty tough neighborhoods, with accents that can be tough to understand. My only problem with this movie is how much Casey Affleck mumbles. I was glad we watched this at home vs. the theater, because I could rewind and turn the volume up. And I live in Boston and am very good with accents… [maybe I'm going deaf. lol]. Some of the people in the movie weren’t actors, but people they came across when they started filming and felt compelled to use in the film to make it that much more realistic. Amy Ryan, who plays the little girl’s mother does an excellent job with the role – and the accent – considering she’s not from Boston. 

For the twists and turns and moral dilema, this movie is a definite 4 out of 5 and worth seeing. Ben Affleck does a great job behind the camera, too.

Fãs de Um tira da Pesada já podem começar a contar com o próximo filme da série policial.

Eddie Murphy irá retornar às telas como o detetive Axel Foley em Um Tira da Pesada IV, (Beverly Hills Cop IV), trabalhando com a Paramount em conjunto com Lorenzo di Bonaventura como produtor, informa a revista “Variety”.

Rumores da imprensa brasileira apontaram que Brett Ratner, o diretor da saga “Hora do rush”, com Chris Tucker e Jackie Chan, como nome mais forte para dirigir o filme, porém informações externas da CraveOnline (dos EUA) não confirmam esta hipótese.

O novo regime da Paramount é audacioso em reviver a clássica franquia de ação-comédia. Murphy trabalhará muito próximo do estúdio e di Bonaventura no refortalecimento e atualização do projeto que foi uma vez muito lucrativo.

Os primeiros dois filmes da franquia, produzidas por Jerry Bruckheimer e seu parceiro original Don Simpson, proporcionaram uma gigantesca bilheteria. Um Tira da Pesada faturou $315,7 milhões de dólares pelo mundo, enquanto a sua seqüência faturou $299,6 milhões de dólares (também ao redor do mundo).

A franquia deu problema com o lançamento do “Um Tira da Pesada III” em 1994. O filme ganhou apenas $44 milhões de dólares nos EUA.

Un giorno Amanda McCready (Madeline O’Brien), una bimba di 4 anni, residente in un quartiere malfamato della città, scompare misteriosamente e i due giovani investigatori vengono contattati dagli zii della piccola che li incaricano di indagare. I due saranno affiancati nelle loro ricerche da due poliziotti in base agli ordini di Jack Doyle (Morgan Freeman), capo della polizia locale. Le indagini porteranno alla luce tristi realtà, e metteranno i due investigatori di fronte a una terribile decisione…

La pellicola è tratta dall’omonimo romanzo (tradotto in Italia con il titolo La casa buia) di Dennis Lehane, uno dei nuovi maestri del thriller,  l’autore di Mystic River, da cui Clint Eastwood ha tratto l’omonimo film vincitore di 2 premi Oscar e di un Golden Globe.

Trasporre cinematograficamente questa storia è sicuramente difficile, ma Ben Affleck, attore e sceneggiatore alla sua prima regia, decide di rischiare e fa bene, portando sullo schermo un thriller innovativo e fuori dagli schemi. I due detective (protagonisti di 4 romanzi di Lehane), si trovano di fronte a un pozzo senza fondo fatto di violenza, droga, assassini, con una madre tossicodipendente e corriere della droga, uno zio ex alcolista, una zia invadente e preoccupate per la nipotina. In tutto ciò c’è solo un’unica vittima: la povera Amanda, di cui si sono perse le tracce… Il capo della polizia locale Jack Doyle è deciso a tutto pur di ritrovare la bambina, anche a causa di un fatto doloroso legato al suo passato. L’uomo mal sopporta la partecipazione dei due investigatori alle indagini e per evitare che i due siano di intralcio, affianca loro due poliziotti (Ed Harris e John Ashton).

L’attore e neoregista  si dimostra maturo nella direzione e abile nella scrittura della sceneggiatura (realizzata insieme ad Aaron Stockard) così come nella scelta del cast, scegliendo come protagonista il fratello minore e meno noto Casey, che regala umanità, dubbi e incertezze a Patrick Kenzie, il perno etico e morale di tutta la faccenda,  e affiancandogli un cast di rilievo nel quale spiccano Morgan Freeman, sempre versatile e all’altezza delle aspettative, Ed Harris, poliziotto ambiguo e dai modi poco diplomatici e soprattutto una bravissima e intensa Amy Ryan, nei panni della madre distratta, tossicodipendente e inaffidabile di Amanda.

Le tragiche affinità di questa storia con la vicenda della piccola Madeleine McCann (bimba inglese scomparsa in Portogallo, della cui sparizione sono sospettati i genitori) ha creato non pochi problemi alla pellicola, la cui uscita in Italia è stata ritardata al 4 aprile scorso, mentre in Gran Bretagna è ancora incerta (anche se sarebbe prevista a giugno).

Conclusione: Consigliato, per riflettere.

Kāda vilka pēc viņš ir ielicis detektīva lomā savu vārgi pīkstošo bratānu Keisiju?
Pēc zināma laika vismaz manā galvā parādas uzraksts, ka ar šo filmu nav kaut kas kārtībā. Var vēl pievērt acis uz Keisiju, kad viņš tuso ar savu detektīvpartneri, kaut kādu losandželosas truščobu kārtējo pelēko peli. Var vēl mēģināt ignorēt faktu, ka šādam personāžam var būt kaut kas kopīgs ar melno mobu. Taču, kad ekrānā parādas Morgans Frīmens ar Edu Harisu, sāc jau kaut kā ļoti skaudri saprast, ka Keisijs te ir galīgi ne kasē.
