El caso es que mi homenaje a los majetes fundadores de ID Sofware ha sido del agrado de todos, por lo que he acabado <a href="http://www.elpixelilustre.com/2009/09/resultados-del-primer-concurso-ilustre.html">ganando el concursete</a>. Está por ver cuales serán los premios, ¡pero miedo me dan! ¡Gracias zagales!</p>

<p><strong>What a FUCKING FANTASTIC day</strong> &#8212; most of you who follow this blog will have gotten an e-mail if you&#8217;re on the SOGC list with an update on the antics of Amy (Synthetic), Matt (ucosty), Ben (missingo) and myself (Jaytee).</p>
<p>I got to see the Carmack. <em>the Carmack.</em> Jesus fuck, the star struckedness is off the charts!</p>
<p>I was so shaking with <em>orgasmic delight </em>I couldn&#8217;t take a clear photo</p>

<p>Actually we were too far away for my <em>piece of fucking shit </em>IXUS 40 camera. Expect better pictures when I can ambush missingo or ucosty.</p>
<p>We got to check out a completely new and unreleased trailer of RAGE, and we saw the new Wolfenstein&#8217;s launch trailer. Wolfenstein is a game I&#8217;m looking into buying &#8211; but I don&#8217;t expect it to take off too much on the charts; but who knows really. Return to Castle Wolfenstein ended up being a cult classic in multiplayer &#8211; eventually leading to Enemy Territory.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ll update more &#8211; I&#8217;m so wasted as something ridiculous happened during the Carmack keynote &#8211; which I&#8217;ll write about tonight. (later arvo for you aussies)</p>

<p style="text-align:left;">Developer id Software has quickly jumped on the recent console wars flame up that company head John Carmack sparked after telling <a href="http://www.edge-online.com/news/carmack-ps3-performance-lags-behind-360" target="_blank"><em>Edge</em></a> that the PlayStation 3 version of id’s upcoming post-apocalyptic title <a href="http://g4tv.com/games/ps3/46601/rage/index/" target="_blank"><em>Rage </em></a>currently runs at “just 20-30 [frames-per-second]” whereas the Xbox 360 version runs at 60 FPS.</p>
<p>In response, id said, via its <em>Rage</em>-dedicated Twitter account, “We are committed to ensuring that gamers on all platforms have a great <em>Rage </em>experience.”</p>
<p>An official response from id on this whole mess was obviously expected, however, it’s a bit surprising that the company had to even make it in the first place, considering in the same offending interview with <em>Edge</em>, Carmack said, “We expect [<em>Rage</em>] to be 60 hertz on every supported platform. The work remaining is getting it locked so there&#8217;s never a dropped frame or a tear, but we&#8217;re confident that we&#8217;re going to get that.&#8221;</p>
<p>Did the PS3 users who raised all this “ruckus” reach for the pitchforks and torches a bit hastily on this one?</p>

<p>Carmack dice che le versioni PC e 360 di Rage girano tranquillamente a 60 FPS, mentre su PS3 il titolo arriva a</p>
<p>malapena ai 25/30 FPS. Questo perchè il chip grafico NVIDIA RSX è più lento di quello presente nella Xbox 360 (che ricordo è stato sviluppato da ATI). Mentre per quanto riguarda la CPU nonostante sia più o meno simile, su 360 si riesce meglio a gestire i carichi di lavoro.</p>

<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div class='snap_preview'><p>24 giugno 2009, una delle ultime software house videoludiche indipendenti viene acquistata dalla ZeniMax Media Inc. (<a href="http://www.elderscrolls.com/id.htm">annuncio ufficiale</a>). Ora, se da un lato tutti i fan della id Software, e non solo loro, hanno reagito a codesta notizia con un sonoro WHATTAFUCK?!?, me compreso, dall&#8217;altro lato, se si è apprezzatori sia della id sia della bethesda, si può decisamente tirare un sospiro di sollievo. Scrivendo da apprezzatore di entrambe le case di sviluppo, la notizia mi ha parecchio scosso inizialmente, e continua a scuotermi tutt&#8217;ora, tuttavia leggendo le varie interviste al nerd per eccellenza che corrisponde al nome di John Carmack e ad altri, e conoscendo passo passo le decisioni della id negli anni, posso sicuramente dire di essere ottimista al 95% per questa &#8220;fusione&#8221;. Voglio dire, se fosse stata la EA a inglobarsi la id come si è inglobata il 90% delle case di sviluppo, mi sarei fatto strada a colpi di BFG sino al quartier generale EA e avrei piazzato un casino al plasma. Ricordo ancora quando la EA acquisì la Westwood Studios, la casa sviluppatrice della saga di Command &#38; Conquer. Lo shock fu tremendo e il risultato fu C&#38;C &#8211; Generals. Al periodo, per motivi di scarsa potenza computerica, non potei provarlo subito e un mio amico me lo raccontò passo passo, essendo io ansioso di conoscere tutti i nuovi dettagli del nuovo capitolo della saga. Ancora oggi piango per le atrocità che la saga subì per colpa di quel titolo (lasciando perdere Renegade). Qua però si sta parlando di id Software e Bethesda Softworks, mica brodo di giuggiole andato a male. La fantasia è volata subito su titoli quali &#8220;The elder scrolls V: Doom, hell on hearth&#8221; o su &#8220;Fallout &#8211; Quake Wars&#8221; e altre cose male di questo genere. Ma pensandoci bene, e sapendo che tutti i capoccia della id sono rimasti al loro posto, sono del parere che questa acquisizione non porti così tanti guai alla vecchia cara amata software house Doomeggiante. In effetti, anche chi non va matto per i titoli id e/o per quelli Bethesda non potrà certo dire che stiamo parlando di 4 pirla che non sanno fare una cippa a livello di giochi. RAGE, il nuovo titolo già in sviluppo alla id Software, verrà pubblicato dalla EA (non potevano rimanere con l&#8217;Activision?) in quanto gli accordi sono stati presi in precedenza e devono essere rispettati. Probabilmente il primo gioco ad essere pubblicato dalla Zenimax sarà Doom 4, anche questo già in sviluppo alla id e sicuramente seguirà il nuovo capitolo della saga di Quake, per ora una voce di corridoio o qualcosa del genere. Tutto sommato, anche se per orgoglio un po mi dispiace che una software house come la id non sia più indipendente, so che di certo non è stata inglobata senza ritegno, e so che chi l&#8217;ha acquisita non pubblica giochi discutibili nè tantomeno i suoi programmatori saranno al guinzaglio di nessun pirla a caso della sezione marketing. Sarebbe interessante prima o poi vedere una joint operation tra id e bethesda e vedere che gioco può mai uscire fuori. Aspettando quel momento, un po tutti noi fan della id, e magari anche i non fan, ci auguriamo che le cose non cambino, e se proprio devono, lo facciano in meglio. Se poi la situazione degenera ci rimane ancora la Valve. Chissà che faccia avrà fatto John Romero, dentro il suo studio della sua nuova software house, quando ha sentito la notizia. Ma cosa gliene importa a lui, con la moglie che si ritrova.</p>

<title><![CDATA[Why the id acquisition is good news]]></title>

<p>Last month&#8217;s id acquisition by ZeniMax was a shock.  After a little time to digest the news, it&#8217;s starting to seem more like a pleasant surprise.  Kotaku had some <a href="http://kotaku.com/5302091/bethesdas-big-move" target="_blank">interesting insight</a> on the deal:</p>
<blockquote><p>That&#8217;s how the deal with id Software started, as a friendly conversation between ZeniMax CEO Robert Altman and id president Todd Hollenshead.</p>
<p>&#8220;They were talking about what we could do together,&#8221; Hines said. &#8220;And the more they talked the more they realized that if we got together the whole would be better than the sum of its parts.&#8221;</p>
<p>It would also allow id to get away from the biggest problem they have, being a small cog in a much larger publisher&#8217;s machine.</p>
<p>&#8220;Now they get to be a whole part of the process and the know the publisher will be fully behind them,&#8221; Hines said.</p>
<p>Under the new arrangement id Software will remain mostly untouched and be allowed to do what they do best: Make solid games. But the deal will give id Software the ability to expand their stable of developers, said Hines, who had just returned from a trip to id Software&#8217;s Texas studio.</p></blockquote>
<p>So what&#8217;s that mean for gamers?  Most importantly, it gives Doom 4 an even better shot at being a very fun, stunning, and successful game.  id certainly seems to now be in a better environment &#8211; financially and creatively &#8211; to make brilliant games.</p>
<p>It means more id games too.  The house is expanding from two teams to three &#8211; all working on separate games (Rage, Doom 4, and reportedly a brand new IP for the new team).</p>
<p>And finally, it means Bethesda has some good help at hand.  And while we all love Bethesda, we know John Carmack (pictured) could show them a thing or two.</p>

<p>Признавам си, че в началото въпреки всички хвалби на критиците бях много скептичен именно заради факта, че играта е “on rails”. Сега, след като видях геймплей видеото на <a href="http://toucharcade.com/2009/06/29/doom-resurrection-is-actually-pretty-awesome/">TouchArcade</a> в мен няма никакво съмнение &#8211; това е Doom!</p>

<p>GameSpot&#8217;s Tor Thorsen <a href="http://www.gamespot.com/news/6212648.html?tag=recent_news;title;1">interviewed</a> Id Software&#8217;s Chief Technology Officer John Carmack recently in the wake of ZeniMax Software&#8217;s <a href="http://www.idsoftware.com/">buyout of Id</a>, revealing key reasons for the landmark business decision.</p>
<p>Id, one of the biggest independent developers in the industry, has long had a firm publishing relationship with Activision, now the largest independent publisher in the world thanks to its merger with Vivendi, which made this acquisition a surprise to many.</p>
<p>As the video game industry&#8217;s landscape has changed drastically since Id&#8217;s humble share-ware origins, that relationship has made some sort of sense, with Id keeping control over its IP, and Activision serving as a publishing arm.</p>
<p>&#8220;But since the very beginning, even before [the first] Wolfenstein was published, id has gotten a lot of offers to be acquired by various companies, and there were always pros and cons to it,&#8221; Carmack told GameSpot. &#8220;It&#8217;s always nice when somebody offers you a lot of money, but then again, you have to trade it for the idea that you wouldn&#8217;t completely be your own boss. You may have to do something you wouldn&#8217;t do in a different company, and that becomes a statement about their corporate culture.&#8221;</p>
<p>From my perspective, Id&#8217;s remained fiercely independent, making any Activision acquisition a difficult one to strategically make sense of. While the Santa Monica-based publisher has smartly avoided EA&#8217;s Borg-style of acquisition&#8211;buying the developer for the intellectual property and gutting the creative forces and key designers&#8211;when Activision does buy a developer, that team must then do Activision&#8217;s bidding, whatever that may be.</p>
<p>Trey Arch is a key example of this strategy, being directed to whatever is the most important title at the moment, with little time to complete the project, and usually with a big licensed attached to it. A worst-cased scenario of this strategy is the former Dave Mirra BMX developer Z-Axis, which Activision bought and then had little luck with on at least one never-published game and X-Men: The Official Game, which was panned.</p>
<p>It has watched Activision-owned Infinity Ward rocket in popularity due to its Call of Duty and Modern Warfare series, eclipsing the aging Doom and Quake series. While in the technological side of things, Epic Games&#8217; Unreal engine has become the industry standard for tech engines in this console generation, eclipsing Id&#8217;s technology as the preferred tech engine.</p>

<p>&#8220;I mean, we had to wonder how we would be if we were acquired by Sierra, Activision, EA or any of the potential publishers there. The other aspect you have to look at with the larger publishers is that there&#8217;s almost always some competitive interest. Activision and EA already have developers that do first-person shooters. If we were to come into the fold on one of those, then we would be competing against the brother and sister companies under that umbrella. We&#8217;d be fighting for attention for the marketing department to get positioned.&#8221;</p>
<p>Carmack answers the strategic fit question later in the interview, giving context to the ways in which Id&#8217;s corporate culture would fit or mesh with ZeniMax&#8217;s corporate culture, and answering Id&#8217;s tendency to publish a game only &#8220;when it&#8217;s done.&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;Yeah, there&#8217;s a couple aspects to that. In terms of the &#8220;when it&#8217;s done&#8221; thing, another key advantage about ZeniMax is that it&#8217;s a private company. They do not have quarterly reports that have to go out, and they don&#8217;t have to worry about making their publicly stated targets. I mean, our contracts with Activision and EA always said that we didn’t have to push out anything out over our objections. We were never in a position where something would get pushed out. But that doesn&#8217;t mean that there is not some level of…well, let&#8217;s just say, they convey their desires to us.&#8221;</p>

<p>Dieser äussert in einer dazugehörigen Pressemeldung, er sei sei zufrieden mit dem Deal. Da ja bereits neue id Games in der Entwicklung sind (wie ein neues Wolfenstein) und dazu auch Vertriebsverträge bestehen, steigt Bethesda bzw. ZeniMax Media erst danach voll ein. Ich glaube, das ist eine gute Entwicklung.</p>

<p>ZeniMax Media, the parent company of Bethesda Softworks, announced today that it will acquire id Software creators of the DOOM, Quake, Wolfenstein franchises and the up and coming Rage.</p>
<p>John Carmack id Software co-founder had this to say about the acquisition:</p>
<p><em>&#8220;It&#8217;s hard to imagine a more complementary matchup here, where we are now (with) a publisher that has exactly zero overlap with the things that we have done.  There&#8217;s no sense of competing with other products here. We have got the full force of everything behind it.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>Carmack will remain id&#8217;s technical director.  ZeniMax&#8217;s company founder and CEO Robert Altman stated:</p>
<p><em>&#8220;We are known for our ability with RPG titles. We considered id Software to be among the best in the world at first-person shooters. That was a large category that we wanted to excel at. So it was just a perfect strategic fit,&#8221; he said. &#8220;And the final element was, as we got to know the people there, it was a perfect blend of cultures. They look at the world as we did. So it became a very compelling transaction.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>No financial terms were given and Bethesda will now publish up and coming id titles.  Rage which is currently in the final stages of development will be published by Electronic Arts, but &#8220;they don&#8217;t have any rights to sequels,&#8221; Carmack said. &#8220;ZeniMax has working relationships with EA so we hope that goes smoothly but any future titles will certainly be for ZeniMax.&#8221;</p>

<p>Както се вижда от трейлъра играта е от тип &#8220;on rails&#8221; т.е. героят ви се движи сам, а вие използвате акселерометъра за да местите мерника и копче за да стреляте. Освен това имате друг бутон с който можете да &#8220;отбягвате&#8221; вражеските атаки. И въпреки, че много от вас ще реагират скептично, изненадващо гейм журналистите докоснали се до играта твърдят, че въпросната е супер забавна, а историите на Кармак само надъхват повече и повече&#8230;</p>
<p>От техническа гледна точка играта ще ни прекара през &#8220;8 впечатляващи 3D зони&#8221;, като точно както правеха и PC версиите навремето, &#8220;Doom Resurrection&#8221; изцежда максимума от iДивайса.<br />
Очаква се преминаването през играта да отнема 4-6 часа в зависимо от нивото на трудност.</p>
<p>По интересната новина обаче е свързана с това, че новият Doom се развива паралелно с историята на Doom 3 но от гледната точка на друг герой. В играта са включени всички оригинални оръжия и повечето чудовища от 3-ката + босовете. Единственият очевидно липсващ елемент е фенерчето което самият Кармак нарича &#8220;най-голямата ми грешка в Doom 3.&#8221; <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif' alt=':D' class='wp-smiley' /><br />
Хвалби се сипят и за звука (да и звуците са взети от 3-ката).</p>
<p>Иначе самата игра е разработвана в пълна секретност през последните 8 месеца от <a href="http://www.escalationstudios.com/">Escalation Studios</a>, а John Carmack е играел ролята на консултант и &#8220;най-скъпият бета тестер в историята на iPhone игрите&#8221; <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_biggrin.gif' alt=':D' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
<p>Интересно е, че id Software определят Doom Resurrection като основополагащ момент в историята си, защото това е първият случай в който id финансират външен екип!</p>
<p>Кармак твърди че тази игра е третата част от &#8220;тристранната им атака&#8221; върху апстора.<br />
Първата страна са класическите id игри като <a href="http://strangera.com/?s=%22Doom+Classic%22">Doom Classic</a> (трябва да излезе през юли), <a href="http://strangera.com/?s=%22Wolfenstein+3D%22">Wolfenstein 3D</a> и евентуалните Quake релийзи. Всички те, са пренаписани лично и ексклузивно от Carmack himself!</p>
<p>Втората категория са мобилните RPG-та като <a href="http://strangera.com/?s=%22Wolfenstein+RPG%22">&#8220;Wolfenstein RPG&#8221;</a> която била готова за събмитване.</p>
<p>Третата част, са iPhone ексклузивните проекти като Doom Resurrection. BTW Кармак намекна, че следващото заглавие може да е обвързано с <a href="http://strangera.com/category/games/rage-games/">Rage</a>!!!!!!</p>

<p>Äntligen en riktig klassiker till min kära Ipod touch. <strong>Allas vår idol John Carmack är i farten med en konvertering av gamla hederliga <em>Doom</em> till Iphone och tillika Ipod touch,</strong> och det är tydligen på tal om en release redan någon gång under juni månad.</p>
<p>Enligt Carmack själv ska det röra sig om en mer seriös insats än vad som var gällande med <em>Wolfenstein 3D Classic</em>.</p>
<blockquote><p><em>Att få ett fungerande <em>Doom</em> på en ny plattform handlar bara om några dagars jobb. Men att få till ett riktigt bra spel på en maskin som saknar både mus, tangentbord och överdriven prestanda kräver en hedersam insats.</em></p></blockquote>
<p><strong>30 bildrutor per sekund ska tydligen ha utlovats,</strong> och även ett flerspelarläge via Wi-Fi samt även Bluetooth när det blir aktuellt med Iphone 3.0. Nu kan man bara hoppas att det rostiga vraket inte kostar så mycket mer än 7 &#8211; 15 kronor, men det skulle å andra sidan inte komma som en chock om vi får se priser upp emot 40 riksdaler, <strong>för <em>Doom</em> säljer ju alltid.</strong></p>

<p>Освен написаното по-горе, Кармак казва че е прекарал голяма част от последните си няколко седмици в работа по Doom, и преди няколко дни първата бета версия е била дадена на тестерите. Очакванията му са, Doom да бъде готова за публикуване н App Store-то някъде през следващият месец.<br />

<p>Кармак твърди, че в момента играта върви със стабилни 30 fps и &#8220;това е Doom-а които си спомняте, като в действителност е малко по-добър от колкото беше преди&#8221;. Първата версия ще поттдържа мултиплейър през Wi-Fi (тоест когато сте в една уайрълес мрежа), а след появата на <a href="http://strangera.com/2009/03/18/iphone-30-os-guide-everything-you-need-to-know/">iPhone 3.0 OS</a> и блутуут мултиплейър (демек, без нужда от рутер). За съжаление играта няма да поддържа онлайн мултиплейър, защото лагът щял да бъде твърде голям.</p>

<p>Както сигурно знаете играта се разработва от Electronic Arts (който в последно време здраво са налазили App Store-то) и се очаква &#8220;скоро&#8221;. Та днес, очевидно поради някаква грешка, играта за кратко се е появила в Японският App Store и след това е била &#8220;изтеглена&#8221; от продажба. Времето обаче е било достатъчно, за да може Японският сайт <a href="http://www.appbank.net/">AppBank</a> да се докопа до нея и да заснеме геймплей видео <img src='http://s.wordpress.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>
