The experiment gets out of control in the second season of AMC’s Breaking Bad. Bryan Cranston shatters suburban stereotypes in his performance as chemistry teacher turned drug kingpin Walt White. As danger and suspicion around him escalate, Walt continues to straddle two conflicting worlds: A ruthless swirl of drugs, murder and mayhem on one hand, and a complex and emotionally fraught domestic life on the other. In the no-holds-barred world of Walt White, the end justifies the extreme.

Episode 01: Seven Thirty-Seven
Interesting episode, and it felt like a normal episode, like the sequel to the last episode and not really like a monster-hammer-uber-cool season opener. But I am thankful that it’s not. Breaking Bad still concentrates more on the characters and their relationship.
Hank (Dean Norris) and Marie (Betsy Brandt): I hope both of them are getting an interesting story this season, because they managed to get more interest into the characters. And it is nice that Skylar (Anna Gunn) and Walt have exactly the same problems like Hank and Marie – but Skylar is pretty much more into the search for a reason, why the marriage won’t work at the moment.
A shame that I am spoiled, or I would ask myself what the beginning is meaning; but I can’t begin something with the little sex scene of Walt and Skylar in the kitchen. He almost was about to hurt her.
The rest of the episode (the main story arc involving Tuco [Raymond Cruz]) was good. Not only Walt and Jesse (Aaron Paul) get paranoid and try to prevent from being killed by him (interesting episode cliffhanger, btw), but Hank as DEA at the crime scene with the two bodies. And especially Jesse trying to open the revolver (hilarious) and Hank seeing their rob from last season from the eyes of a security camera (“It’s a barrel, roll it!”). Some hilarious scenes in here and a lot of dark character drama. The second season begins like the first season ended. 7,5/10

Episode 02: Grilled
Holy fuck, what an awesome episode. And another example why this series can’t work on network television. Almost everything in this episode was perfect, just the story with Skylar, Walt jr. (RJ Mitte), Marie and Hank trying to find out where Walter is was a bit boring, but the story with Walter, Jesse and Tuco: OMG, how awesome was that? I wished to see a whole episode about that, not interrupted by any other story, and this would be a mega-uber-cool-awesome-whatever-episode.
Tuco really is a crazy person and it is kind of a shame that Hank killed him here – it would be awesome to see him in a few episodes more, because he was just… too crazy in here. But his death gives the writers a chance to begin a new story. Walter and Jesse were in too deep in these last episodes and if Tuco would be still alive and dealing with Walter/Jesse, Hank would come really close to what Walter and Jesse are doing.
All of the scenes in the desert were awesome. Beginning with Tuco talking to Walter about trust, over Jesse’s efforts to poison Tuco until the shoot-out finale Tuco versus Hank. Just awesome, with lots of atmosphere and thrill, a bit humor on the side and a scene full of action.
Really an awesome episode. It would be full ten, if we had less Skylar/Walter jr./Marie. 9/10

Episode 03: Bit By a Dead Bee
The episode was good, but Tuco’s death slows the series kind of down. Like I said, the last episodes with the Tuco story was more than interesting, and now it is over. It’s a bit of a shame, but I am eager to know what is coming for the rest of the season. Walter obviously won’t give up with the cooking (even after all the shit he experienced).
The whole damage control was a nice idea, but I don’t understand why Jesse did all of this and why Walter risked so much. Jesse gets arrested by the ATF and Hank gets to know Jesse – kind of dangerous situation for Walter and Jesse, especially after the deal with Hank and Tuco. At least this brings forward the story a bit. Hank gets closer and closer to the two “idiots” cooking the most clearest meth in the city.
Walter and Skylar were good as well, slowly there is trouble coming for their relationship. Skylar suspects that Walter has secrets (let’s see how long the story around the second cell phone will hold on) and Walter just doesn’t care about it. 7,5/10

Episode 04: Down
Another one of those episodes which feel like a filler, but are actually not. The story concentrates on getting Jesse a new storyline while ending all the other loose ends, and Skylar has difficulties to figure out what’s wrong with Walt, who has no idea what is going on with his family, especially with his son. And even though they are typical storylines, which are suited for a perfectly family series full of emotional drama, it just suited the series right here. Finally Skylar and Walt are having some problems, after they were signs of it from the beginning of the series. And it is probably a preparation for Skylar finding out the truth about Walt and what he’s doing in a couple episodes, maybe the season finale.
Jesse being kicked out by his parents and trying to look for a new stay was interesting; his fall into the John was funny and awkward at the same moment, and I even could feel his “pain”, after he entered the trailer – he is really down in life.
Now the story needs its time to bring Jesse and Walt together back in business again, and it could take a while, after all the problems both of them had – together and separately. And despite the feeling that
the series is told very slow, I hope this story gets picked up fast again. 8/10

Episode 05: Breakage
A good episode, and Jesse and Walt are back in business. And surprisingly in their own business, even though it was predictable that one of them would have the idea to run their completely own business.
Walt with more problems with his wife; Hank partly in the center of the story with his mild panic attack(s) (I say that the supposedly shooting in his house, which was revealed as his beer bottles losing pressure, as another mildly panic attack of his), Skylar trying not to talk to Marie; and Jesse moving into a new apartment and having to learn to deal with his “colleagues” – especially the last point could lead into a really interesting story. But I already know that this won’t come, for that Jesse is still too much of an addict and a pussy to handle “big problems” – Walt clearly has more balls than Jesse.
The episode feels like a new beginning and probably like the “real” season beginning, though we are already in the fifth episode. 8/10

Episode 06: Peekaboo
Awesome episode. And it was over way too fast. I had the feeling, I just watched the episode for 30 minutes, but it was 46 minutes long – awesome how the writers can tell stories without any length. While Walter’s story involving Gretchen (Jessica Hecht) was interesting (and I already forgot about the part that Gretchen and Elliot wanted to pay Walter’s treatment), Jesse’s story was awesome times ten. He tries to get his money back from the guys who stole his meth – and I didn’t even expected that this story wasn’t over. I was surprised, when the opening scene revealed that Jesse wanted to get his money back. And the he breaks into this shit house and there is a little boy… this was a real strong WTF moment, and all this emotional stuff came into my brain and my heart: How can parents like these raise a child in this house under these circumstances and why is nobody else noticing? How Jesse dealt with the boy… awesome acting by Aaron Paul; how the parents dealt with Jesse… awesome acting as well, I totally bought their addiction and their disinterest for what’s happening around them. And then the wife kills the husband, while he tried to crack up an ATM machine… WTF? This story was really awesome and it will stick in my brain for quite a while. Wow.
The side plot with Walter gave some information about his past – interesting development. So he once had a relationship with Gretchen and he left. So, he said that they are saying his treatment, which isn’t right, and Gretchen learns about that. And the dinner Walter and Gretchen had… awesome acting by Bryan Cranston, how he tried to let her hate him, simply wow. And I like the producers for not losing the language they had in season one. They still brought in the “Fuck you”, though it had to be muted. I just wished that Gretchen would have told Skylar the truth, so the story would come forward for once in a while. It looks like Walter has to lie again (and boy did he lie to Skylar at the end). 9/10

Episode 07: Negro Y Azul
This episode was hilarious. Jesse is a hilarious character. He buys a flatscreen, invites Jane (Krysten Ritter, finally on my radar, after I saw her in various TV shows, but never noticed her) to his apartment and both are sitting in front of a flatscreen, who is looking for satellite signal – hilarious, probably the most funny scene in the series so far. The song in the intro scene – hilarious and something complete different. All the opening scenes in the episodes are somewhat complete different from the rest of the episode. And the song could be a chart breaker, I had a little ear worm of it during the episode.
The story was a bit lame though. It mostly prepared for what’s to come (especially a little love relationship between Jesse and Jane) and it foreshadows what problems Jesse and Walter will have in the future, when they really expand (nice explained in the song); and with Hank in his new job we even had a storyline, which could be outside of the main story arc. The explosion of the turtle with Danny Trejo’s head on it (I am sad that he already is dead, I already was hoping he could be a recurring) was awesome and so unexpected. I thought Hank would have another heart attack, but instead the turtle explodes and pulls a few DEA agents with him – such an awesome scene.
And Skylar gets her job back she quit four years ago, together with some revelation of her past – very interesting. It really looks like the writers either want to plan ahead for the next seasons, giving Skylar a probable relationship, when she breaks up with Walter (which will happen, when she finds out), or she gets an own storyline, so that she has problems on her own for a while. The sexual harassment doesn’t seem over for me, and this lies four years in the past… 8/10

Episode 08: Better Call Saul
Well, it looks like another preparing episode. Danny Trejo got killed last episode, so the series needs another recurring actor and character, and why not Saul (Bob Odenkirk), who was introduced here? He is an interesting character and he seems like he wants in to the business Heisenberg and his younger partner have. And I never thought about a third business partner entering their business, and now it seems to happen – could be an interesting storyline, especially with Walter, who only does that for the money, and Jesse who is practically an addict. The standoff at gunpoint between the three in the desert was hilarious; how Saul turned the tables was just awesome. And he was right at the end: When is the ATF finding him? After the scene in which the fake Heisenberg was caught and we saw Hank thinking about it, I was thinking that Hank isn’t believing all this shit happening, like he smells that something ain’t right.
Jesse really has a relationship now, very character developing of him. I am already thrilled what happens when he falls back into his addiction (or when she will fall back) – it just seems illogical that she is starting with him a relationship at all. She is in rehab, she has to know that he would bring her back into the weed, meth or whatever. But as long as Jesse has a different storyline than drugs and dealing, I am excited.
Well, and for the rest: I already forgot it, because it was not important. It was more of a lame episode than revealing; the writers still want to write some new stories and need a few episodes for it. 7/10

Episode 09: 4 Days Out
This show is absolutely awesome. Like “Grilled” and “Peekaboo” an awesome strong episode, and this time the writers chose not to tell a separate storyline in the episode, instead we saw Walter and Jesse all the time. This is probably the best episode of the series so far. Absolutely amazing.
Walter’s and Jesse’s trip to the desert to cook all their meth for the next weeks was awesome, and I didn’t even expect that anything could happen. But from the moment Jesse put the key in the ignition I knew something would happen, at least the battery would go dead and both of them are stuck in the middle of nowhere. And how they got stuck… It is always fun to watch, when the both are fighting with each other; Jesse, the dumbhead and Walter, the genius. They were always complete different persons, and the writers show it all the time, when they are working together. But there was one funny scene: When Walter and Jesse took off their clothes, I had to spontaneously laugh, because I was thinking that Jesse was about to prostitute himself for a paying Walter – at least it is what a cop would think, when he would enter the trailer at this moment.
I am curious how this story will develop during the next episode. The trip definitely won’t be forgotten; either Skylar finds out that Walter wasn’t with his mother, or she looks at the phone bill. That Walter is in remission, is a complete different story, which open new doors, and obviously new developments in the characters. Awesome scene when Walter beat the crap out of the dispenser.
Definitely a highlight in cable TV. 9,5/10

Episode 10: Over
Interesting episode with a really interesting and mind-blowing ending. Obviously Walter wants to keep his territory, and how he told the guys to stay out at the end… awesome acting. I had big eyes and an open mouth, so unexpected was this scene.
The rest of the episode was simple, some parts were preparing for another story, some parts were just interesting. Are Jesse and Jane about to have a real relationship. Until now it was for her just a sex thing, he seems to be in love, and when her father Donald (John de Lancie) entered the picture she made it clear that there is no chance of a proper relationship. This surprisingly gives character development to Jesse and Jane. For Jesse interesting, because he is
about to lose the one thing he hopes for to work his miserable life right (shown in his scenes, where he smoked one cigarette after another and then meth), for Jane interesting, because she gets some character development, though she is only recurring for now (but I don’t think she will be for a while).
While Walter is “renovating” the house, Skylar is about to cheat on her husband. She notices that he doesn’t have any interest in keeping up the marriage, and so she looks for a replacement in her boss Ted (Christopher Cousins). I think this story will develop big, we are three episodes before the season finale, and with Skylar’s relationship to his boss (and Walter’s plans to keep his territory) there is something big coming as season cliffhanger.
To the scene at the beginning: It is really a shame I am already spoiled, or the picture with the two body bags besides Walter’s car would be really awesome, and I would ask myself if somebody from Walter’s family would be in there… 8/10

Episode 11: Mandala
Damn, I seriously like this season with these last episodes; this was another great episode with a really great ending.
I saw it coming that Jane will go back to the drugs, and here it happened. It was a great scene, when she stood at the door and made her choice. She went back to Jesse and knew she would go down the road again, when she opened the door to his room. But to see her actually taking drugs again was a little bit of a shocker. First she smoked the meth, then she came with needles and the strong stuff – not only is it positive that a series about drugs tells a story about drugs, but this scene was just… whoa. To see someone going down the hell road through drugs in a cable show.. well, I didn’t see any shows of that kind. And with that in mind, Jesse has now an addiction to fight against, which will develop into a more different business relationship with Walter.
Who is looking for a deal of his life. When he sat across Gus (Giancarlo Esposito) and talked about the future relationship, both characters clicked instantly, and I hope Gus is returning in later episodes, though his deal with him seems to be over after he didn’t manage to deliver the product in time. The last four, five minutes were awesome, how Walter tried to call Jesse, broke into his apartment and tried to wake him up. The scene was somewhat between hilarious and totally serious with thrill, especially with Skylar having a baby at the same time, when Walter tries to make the deal of his life – the time couldn’t be more bad. 8,5/10

Episode 12: Phoenix
Fuck, a seriously good episode with an ending I didn’t expect. And I totally didn’t expect how fast the story of the series changes. From trying to get money through cooking and dealing with drugs to the drugs you take and bring death to the ones who take them.
It was surprising that Walter made the deal at the beginning of the episode, for the cost to miss the birth of his daughter. The rest of the story involving his family was not really interesting, Walter jr.’s “charity site” even was a bit too much, but necessary if the writers really want to use this plot device for bringing the money into the game.
While Jane got amount of screentime this episode (and her father as well) I was thinking that she could be a recurring for the next season, or at least for some more episodes to show the fall of Jesse into his addiction. And then she dies at the end, choking on her own vomit – whoa. I couldn’t believe what I saw. If this wasn’t enough, Walter was in the room while it happened and did nothing – that was even more cruel to see. Walter is responsible for Jane’s death, he could prevented it, but he did nothing. Excellent acting by Bryan Cranston at the end. He was more than believable in this “I show Jesse that drugs are dangerous, but – oh no – I am responsible of this girl’s death” matter; I really could express the feelings, anger and desperation.
This episode kind of prepares the season cliffhanger for the characters. Walter has to deal with Jane’s death, Jesse has to deal with her death and his addiction, and I already am spoiled what happens in the finale, so everybody has to deal with much bigger problems than before.
This is why I like this series so much and is probably the best TV series currently on the air. 9,5/10

Episode 13: ABQ
The four episodes with the black-and-white intro, connect their episode titles and you get “Seven Fourty-Seven Down Over ABQ” – practically you saw the cliffhanger of the season before the season finale, and the first scene of the season was part of the cliffhanger. Pretty neat of the producers and an interesting way to show us a cliffhanger during the season.
The season finale was good, but after the last episode I had higher expectations about what was going to happen here. I was waiting of more drama, especially between Walter and Jesse. But Jesse didn’t even have much screentime and only was part of the first act (in which Aaron Paul did an awesome acting job), so that was practically missing. But it was nice to see that Walter was there to help him out of this misery. It is just interesting to know what would happen if he learns the truth about Walter witnessing Jane’s death, if the storyline ever comes back. It would be sad, when it comes back, because it would be a cliché.
Jesse and Jane’s father are dealing with Jane’s death (Krysten Ritter can play a corpse pretty good), Jesse is going down the road of drugs, and just can be helped by Walter (it is interesting that there is nobody in Jesse’s life, who could do such thing – he has no friends, no family, and he just lost his girlfriend) and Jane’s father Donald is responsible for two planes crashing, because he can’t get over the grief. Basically Walter is responsible for the plane crashes as well, because he let Jane die. When he learns the truth about that (finding out that Jane’s father was the air traffic controller, who let the plane crash), he will be even more miserable than he already is.
I didn’t know what to make of the 6/7 week jump into the future. First I thought it was awkward, but it was necessary for letting Skylar learn about all the lies Walter told her. But I don’t even know if this cliffhanger was necessary for this episode. It would have been awesome to see this story starting in the season premiere next season. This way, it seems a bit too much and the writers wanted to give Walter all possible cliffhangers he could get. Another thing is that we didn’t see Jesse after the flash forward – what happened to him?
Hopefully Saul and Gus will be in the next season. Saul was an interesting character in the last episode, and I was surprised to see Gus with the ATF here (this definitely was not a tour trip).
All in all: Good season finale, interesting stories for the next season. I am waiting. 8/10

Season average is 8,27, which makes Breaking Bad to my number one show right now. Of all seasons I reviewed here so fast, the two of Breaking Bad landed above the 8-point-mark.
I planned to watch this season way earlier, maybe together with the TV airing, but I didn’t have any time for new TV shows. At least I got this one finished, before AMC starts airing the first season in March 2010. Maybe I will be able to write single episode reviews.
Nurse Jackie is about to get finished soon, and you can expect five seasons of Lost from me before the start of the sixth and final season. Currently I am watching the episodes and write lots of stuff about the episodes.

Jonathan Scott Frakes (born August 19, 1952) is an American actor, author and director, best known for his portrayal of Commander William T. Riker in the television series Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Moving on to directing in recent years, Frakes directed and also starred in Star Trek: First Contact as well as Star Trek: Insurrection, which earned him the nickname Two-Takes Frakes for his speed.

He is also the author of a book called The Abductors: Conspiracy.

For a time in the 1970s, Frakes worked for Marvel Comics, appearing at conventions in costume as Captain America.

Frakes moved to New York City and became a member of “The Impossible Ragtime Theater”. In that company, Frakes did his first off-Broadway acting in Eugene O’Neill’s The Hairy Ape. His first Broadway appearance was in Shenandoah. At the same time, he landed a role in the NBC soap opera The Doctors. When his character was dismissed from the soap, Frakes moved to Los Angeles, California and played guest spots in many of the top television shows of the 1970s and 1980s, including The Waltons, The Dukes of Hazzard, Matlock, and Steven Bochco’s Hill Street Blues. He played the part of Charles Lindbergh in a 1983 episode of Voyagers! titled “An Arrow Pointing East”. In 1983, he had a role in the short-lived NBC prime time soap opera Bare Essence (which also starred his future wife Genie Francis). He also had recurring roles in Falcon Crest and North & South before signing for the role of Riker on Star Trek: The Next Generation.

He has done animation voice acting, most notably voicing the recurring role of David Xanatos in the animated series Gargoyles, and he provided the voice of his own head in a jar in the Futurama episode “Where No Fan Has Gone Before”. He had a small, uncredited role in the 1994 movie Camp Nowhere. He also reprised his role of Riker for a Next Generation cutaway on an episode of Family Guy that also featured his co-stars Patrick Stewart and Michael Dorn as their respective roles of Picard and Worf.

Frakes is one of only two Star Trek regulars to appear on four different Star Trek series (Star Trek: The Next Generation, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Star Trek: Voyager and Star Trek: Enterprise). (The only other regular to match or exceed that number is Majel Barrett-Roddenberry who appeared in all six television series.) He has also directed episodes in three of them (TNG, DS9 and VOY) and was a popular and innovative director on the Star Trek set, often finding completely new ways to shoot the show’s familiar sets. His directing career has included the films Star Trek: First Contact and Star Trek: Insurrection. Additionally, Frakes was an executive producer for the WB show Roswell, directed several episodes and guest-starred in three episodes. His relationship with Star Trek is made light of in the episode “Secrets and Lies”, in which the alien character Max ironically auditions for a guest role as an alien for Star Trek: Enterprise.

Outside of acting, Frakes appeared on the Phish album Hoist, playing trombone on the track titled “Riker’s Mailbox”. Frakes would occasionally perform on the trombone during his tenure as Commander Riker, drawing on his college marching band experience.

Frakes hosted the television series Paranormal Borderline, which dealt with the paranormal and mysterious happenings and creatures. In one episode Frakes presented an interview of reporter Yolanda Gaskins with veteran astronaut Gordon Cooper, where they discussed the possibility of aliens having visited the Earth in the past.  Overall, the show was criticized and pulled off the air after it was found out that footage showing a yeti from the Himalayas was purposely faked by the show and its producers-Fox television. The “Snowwalker” footage, as it is known, purportedly shows a yeti as it is crossing through a valley in the Himalayas, walking in front of a Belgian couple who are traversing the area on skis. The network finally admitted the hoax, and Frakes distanced himself from the show. Similarly, he is also popular in hosting the hit TV series Beyond Belief: Fact or Fiction which also dealt in the paranormal world. Frakes would allude to stories based on true events or fictional stories and only reveal the truth at the ending of each episode.

Frakes also appeared in Lois & Clark in the episode “Don’t Tug on Superman’s Cape” as Tim Lake, a rich collector who tries to add Superman to his and his wife Amber’s collection.

Frakes is also currently narrating the History Channel television show “That’s Impossible” which is on tuesdays at 10-11 eastern time.

Frakes has had a relationship with the production of TNT’s Leverage as a guest director. Jonathan Frakes is listed as the primary director in some episodes of both season 1 and season 2. It is unclear but likely that he will be directing episodes of Leverage regularly in the future, as Voyager Alumni Jeri Ryan is scheduled to have a recurring role on the show.

Jonathan works with The Workshops, The Waterfall Arts Center and The Saltwater Film Society, all located in Maine, where he teaches classes on film direction. Episode 01: The Child
Hm, for a season opener lame, but for a simple, alone standing episode it was good in some kind. I didn’t find it very believable that Deanna (Marina Sirtis) was so lovely to her son, despite she had the knowledge, that something bad can happen. It seems like she was brainwashed by her son. But the scene where she decided to have the baby and the interactions with Riker (Jonathan Frakes) were strong. On the other hand the sub story with the viruses was dumb. It wasn’t interesting, it wasn’t thrilling, it was nothing. Just the jokes at the end due to Wesley’s (Wil Wheaton) staying on the ship were hilarious (“And who will tuck him in at night?”). 6,5/10

Episode 02: Where Silence Has Lease
I don’t know… an Episode without a real plot, but with an interesting setup. Didn’t we have an alien who wants to understand human life in the last episode? Now another alien with the same intention? That was really boring. Really bad (special effects) was the face in the universe, in front of the Enterprise. I was about to laugh.
And then Worf (Michael Dorn): He behaves like a hungry dog, ready to fight and kill – where are his manners? Can’t he control himself? For one season we have the Klingon who stands there, does what the captain says and otherwise nothing. Now he wants to hit Riker in an exercise? Oh, come on, what characteristics are that? Same with Pulaski (Diana Muldaur): She is familiar with working with computers, but she has difficulties to see Data (Brent Spiner) as a living thing? What the hell??? And then the finale: WTF was that? Seriously, this was a load of shit. It was absurd. Well, at least a red shirt died. 3/10

Episode 03: Elementary, Dear Data
Another holodeck episode and i quite liked it. But it was interesting seeing the computer generating a fictional character which has the ability to learn and grow. And the authors did the mistake to show Moriarty (Daniel Davis) so not dangerous, because he just wasn’t. So, I was missing a real and worthy villain. The final dialog between Moriarty and Picard (Patrick Stewart) was very nice, but Data as Holmes was tedious after a while. 7/10

Episode 04: The Outrageous Okona
A somehow boring, but amusing episode. I liked Billy Campbell’s character (still waiting for the first season of Once & Again) and who did I see in the transporter room……. Teri Hatcher I didn’t expect her to be in the show. Okay, the main story was boring as hell and didn’t give any dangerous moments for the crew, but the conclusion was funny… somehow. The side plot with Data trying to be a comedian was okay, it didn’t blow me away. 6/10

Episode 05: Loud As A Whisper
Naah, boring; wasn’t interesting at all. A peace conference between two races – could be interesting, but wasn’t, because I didn’t see nothing of it. A deaf peace delegate, communicating with a chorus – could be interesting, but why so complicated? And there is so much story behind that concept, but nothing was used. It was just boring. And what is with the end? Even the warriors were not seen anymore after Riva (Howie Seago, he actually is deaf) was sent down.
Blah, just boring. 4/10

Episode 06: The Schizoid Man
Interesting episode. It gives Data another chance to escape the Pinocchio life and the series another episode without a real threat. The beginning is boring, but when the story of Data being “possessed” begins, it becomes more interesting. But there still is the problem of not using everything the story has to offer. And the authors seem to like Data very much; it feels like they use him for the main plot in every fourth episode. It becomes boring :/ 6/10

Episode 07: Unnatural Selection
Another disease for the main plot. Give me more diseases which kills crews of Federation ships, because they all are interesting. NOT. This episode is just plain boring, tells me nothing about the characters, except Doctor Pulaski, who is in the center of all this. But the rest… meh. But I am happy about Chief O’Brien (Colm Meaney) actually speaking in this episode. 3/10

Episode 08: A Matter of Honor
OMG, this was a hell of a funny episode. “If Klingon food is too strong for you, perhaps we could get one of the females to breast-feed you.” – Riker commanding as Captain of a Klingon vessel and then his “Lower your shields. Surrender.” Haha, that was really funny. The officer exchange program was a nice plot to get us Riker closer in a different way; I liked how he acted with the Klingons. Though the story on the Enterprise was boring. 7/10

Episode 09: The Measure of a Man
I don’t know about this episode. It was an interesting story about proving that Data is not just an android. But why Data again? It is the third episode in this season with him in the center. It gets boring. And maybe it would be better to tell such stories in a period of more than one episode. In here it begins and it ends. And I don’t like the Federation officers. They seem so cruel and bossy, and I don’t like such people – source for lame characters. 6/10

Episode 10: The Dauphin
Well well well, what was that…? Wesley’s own little love story – with a little help from his friends. Now I can understand why his character is so much hated by the fans, but actually he story was unintentionally funny. I just could not believe that an alien life form and Wesley, two total different persons, find each other’s love in a matter of minutes – muhaha. At least the episode was not completely crap (I think with this one I will stand against all the other TNG fans, who hate all Wesley episodes), just totally useless. 4/10

Episode 11: Contagion
What? The Romulans can’t fire, when they are cloaked? Didn’t we learn nothing from the sixth movie? Okay, The Undiscovered Land was produced after this episode, so, what the hell with this little plot hole (lol). By the way: I don’t know why the series has such ups and downs. There we have total crap episodes, one episode later we have a good one. This is one of them. Interesting story, interesting conflict (just the Romulan bride was a bit laughable – she seemed so nice, but she wanted to destroy the Enterprise) and the interesting fact that the Enterprise can shut down and function again in a matter of seconds (when my laptop would start so fast…), which was funny.
Finally an episode I liked again. 7,5/10

Episode 12: The Royale
Oh my god, what was that? Completely boring, not a bit of a threat for the crew, not a bit of a conclusion and a story, which had much in it, but used nothing. And I hate, that nobody knows something about the past of the 20th or 21st century. Why don’t they know, that elevators are NOT turbo lifts? To bring humor into the story? Meh, what the hell. And why don’t they know anything about the NASA and its history?
This episode is total bullshit, because it brings absolutely nothing. Obviously we have to blame that to the writers strike. I am waiting for more dumb episodes. 2/10

Episode 13: Time Squared
An interesting episode with an interesting story and a shitty ending. Well, the authors of TNG have the problem to find a proper end for their stories. This is another one with no conclusion in it. I love time travel stories (and I knew from the beginning the shuttle came from the future, so it was not really a shocker, when the crew learned it) ad the first half was really interesting, but the second one just sucked. Such a shame, because maybe this was the interesting episode so far this season – until minute 25 or so. Picard’s actions against himself put the lid on the shitty second half, because I didn’t like his ways. 6,5/10

Episode 14: The Icarus Factor
Well, another boring episode. No danger for the crew, just the arrival of Riker’s father, which wasn’t interesting at all and him being offered a position as captain. It was clear that he will stay on the Enterprise, so nothing was surprising.
The rest was boring, nothing more to say, episode already forgotten. 3/10

Episode 15: Pen Pals
One boring episode after another, though this one was more interesting than the last one. I think, Data’s storyline with the little child on the troubled planet should bring some emotionality into his character and into the actions of Picard, but it didn’t work for me. And Wesley commanding a science team? I don’t know why nobody like his character (he isn’t that bad), but he was boring here. The ending was shitty again, because it went too fast again. 4/10

Episode 16: Q Who
So, this is probably the most important episode so far: the introduction of the Borg, the return of Q (John de Lancie) and the first sign of an on-going story in The Next Generation. But the episode wasn’t really good. There are too much secrets about the Borg and Guinan (Whoopi Goldberg) being a counselor for Picard on this one was… I don’t know, kind of lame. Guinan knew a lot, but still Picard knows almost nothing about the Borg. Maybe it would be better when nobody knew about them in the first place.
The new ensign looks sexy, while I write this I am watching the next episode and I see her again, so let’s hope she is more often in the story. The Enterprise needs some sexy women. 7,5/10

Episode 17: Samaritan Snare
Hm, I don’t know about this one. Two totally separate storylines (I don’t remember if this was the case in one of the earlier episodes), one boring than the other. I don’t care about Wesley getting into the academy, I don’t care about Picard’s heart failure (or whatever). And the story of the dumb, but strong, but totally dumb aliens was just… boring.
At least we learned something about Picard’s past, other than that you can forget that episode. 4,5/10

Episode 18: Up The Long Ladder
The episode started so great and ended really boring. The farmers with their animals, especially the one guy with his bossy daughter, were really funny and had a lot of potential to bring some real funny moments into the series, but in the second half, some moral filled shit story about cloning had to come. And the conclusion wasn’t better.
So: first half was great, second half was shit (like always), I give 6/10.

Episode 19: Manhunt
Hm, let’s see: Lwaxana (Majel Barrett) back on the ship, in a sexual life stage, wants to “have” Picard. Always a funny storyline, because Deanna’s mother is a source for humorous scenes, and the first half was really good, but the second half not so. Again an episode without any danger for the Enterprise and the crew and that is always boring. So, we have an interesting character in a boring suit – forgettable after a short while. 4,5/10

Episode 20: The Emissary
“You’re not even looking at me.” – “I am familiar with your appearance.” The funniest line in this episode. So, Worf had a relationship once, very interesting and finally a character story for him. The story about the Klingons frozen for one century and thinking they are still at war wasn’t really new to me, but interesting. It would be a great plot, when the authors didn’t use it for just one single episode in just one short scene. Well, at least we saw Worf command for a few minutes.
It was a good episode, which is rare in this season. By the way: Women, who are half Klingon and half human can be really sexy… 7/10

Episode 21: Peak Performance
Yeah, the writers strike is a total pain in the ass. This was another lame episode, this time with an interesting story. A battle simulation (the first one in Federation history? I can’t believe it) and the stupid Ferengi had to stop it in their own ways. By the way: The Ferengi were in the neighborhood coincidentally? Worf could manipulate their computers? Why didn’t he do that more often in the past? And why is Riker always smiling, when Wesley has an idea or did something “good”?
Well, at least the episode was not completely crap. 4,5/10

Episode 22: Shades of Gray
So, what do we learn from this episode? Riker had the hottest women in the galaxy, he is a real charmer, almost a sexist of some sort. And the Trek fans are somehow… wrong. This was the baddest episode in TNG history? Well, in two season, I saw at least one episode, which was more worst. Nevertheless, this episode was just boring. Even the micro infection (or whatever) was boring and the little clip show brought nothing except old pictures. Damn writers strike.
For a season finale absolutely shitty (I am waiting for next season’s cliffhanger), lame story, but not the worst TNG episode ever. Because it actually had a story and the “flashbacks” were not fully random. 3/10

The season average is 5,11 and fell down in compare to the first season. Wouldn’t I be in a middle of a long-year Star Trek marathon (watching them all in chronological order), I would have stopped after this season. But I know it is getting better, so I hope the third season smashes it. I already am watching the third season, so I hope it doesn’t take too much time to get it in here.

A tale about life and death.

Aspiring doctor Ted Grey, played by Milo Ventimiglia,  is excited about his residency at one of the most prestigious Pathology programs in the country. But he has no idea just how exciting it will get.

When the elite students think they know everything, nothing holds a surprise or mystery anymore, what else is there to do? A game comes to mind. A rather morbid one, but after all they are all working in Pathology, cutting open dozens of bodies a day. To really get a kick out of something it has to be extreme. How about committing the very thing they are supposed to solve? Murder.

A small group of the best students gather and try to up each other with the perfect, untraceable murder. Grey gets sucked in and as is typical for such scenarios can’t back out when he wants to. More extreme measures have to be taken.

This has got to be one of the most enticing, appaling and fascinating films I have seen in quite a while. The emphasis is not on the splatter, slasher, gore component, but the psychological mindfuck that is going on. Milo Ventimiglia and Michael Weston are great as the two antagonizing forces from the start. The supporting cast is solid with a stand out performance by Lauren Lee Smith, who had me enthralled and chilled to the bone at the same time. Creepy and powerful performance.

Overall a must see. Not just for the great performances, but the thoughtprovoking subject matter. What exactly makes a serial killer? There is a fine line between insanity and genius. A rather disturbing and unsettling thought. Highly recommended film.

Um sistema de comunicação sem fio chamado Vocera permite a profissiionais da a´res de saúde contactar um ao outro instantaneamente com o toque de um botão. O dispositivo deixa as mãos livres e pode ser preso em um uniforme ou pendurado em um cordão. Tem dois componentes: o dispositivo controlado pela voz que opera por um sistema sem fio e um pacote de software que controla e gerencia a atividade de chamadas. O CRM/A é muitas vezes chamado de reator de dobra, núcleo do motor de dobra, ou núcleo do motor principal. A energia produzida dentro do núcleo é

dividida entre a sua função primaria (a propulsão da nave) e os principais sistemas de bordo. O CRM/A é o sistema principal de geração de energia, devido ao fato de uma reação de matéria/antimatéria produzir 10^6 vezes mais energia do que uma reação de fusão comum, como a empregada no sistema de impulso.

O CRM/A consiste de quatro subsistemas: injetores de reagentes, segmentos de constrição magnética, câmara de reação matéria/antimatéria e dutos de condução de força.

Injetores de reagentes

Os injetores de reagentes preparam e alimentam o núcleo com fluxos de matéria e antimatéria controlados com a máxima precisão. O injetor de matéria reagente (IMR) recebe deutério super resfriado do tanque primário de deutério (TPD) na parte superior da seção de engenharia e o aquece parcialmente numa reação contínua de fusão de gás. Ele então impulsiona os gases resultantes através de uma série de bocais ajustáveis até o primeiro segmento de constrição magnética. O IMR consiste de uma estrutura cônica de 5,2 por 6,3 metros, construída com woznio carbomolibdênio reforçado por dispersão. Vinte e cinco atenuadores de impacto o conectam ao TPD e aos pontos principais de suporte da estrutura da nave no deck 30, mantendo 98% de isolamento térmico do restante da seção de engenharia. Para todo efeito, todo o SPD “flutua” dentro do casco para poder agüentar até 3 vezes o estresse teórico de operação.

Dentro do IMR estão seis injetores redundantes multi-alimentados, cada injetor consistindo de duas válvulas de entrada de deutério, condicionadores de combustível, pré-aquecedores de fusão, bloco de compensação magnética, duto de transferência, combinador de gás, cabeça do bocal e o hardware de controle necessário. Deutério não tratado passa pela válvula de entrada a taxas de fluxo controladas e passa aos condicionadores, onde calor é removido trazendo o deutério para logo acima do ponto de transição para o estado sólido. Micro-esferas se formam, são pré-aquecidas por fusão magnética, e enviadas para o combinador de gás, onde o produto gasoso ionizado está agora a 106K. Os bocais então focam, alinham e propelem o fluxo de gás para dentro dos segmentos de constrição. No caso de falha de um dos bocais, o combinador de gás iria continuar a alimentar os bocais restantes, que se dilatariam para acomodar o aumento no suprimento de combustível. Cada bocal mede 102 x 175 cm e é constituído de frúmio-cobre-yttrio 2343.

No lado oposto do CRM/A está o injetor de antimatéria reagente (IAR). O desenho interno e operação do IAR são bem diferentes do IMR, devido à natureza perigosa da antimatéria usada. Cada passo na manipulação e injeção do anti-hidrogênio deve ser executado com campos magnéticos para isolar o combustível da estrutura da nave. Em alguns aspectos o IAR é um dispositivo mais simples, que requer menos componentes móveis. No entanto, o perigo nato à manipulação da antimatéria requer uma confiabilidade inabalável do mecanismo. O IAR tem a mesma estrutura básica, atenuadores de impacto e suportes que o IMR, com adaptações para os dutos de combustível de suspensão magnética. A estrutura contém separadores de fluxo de antimatéria, que dividem o anti-hidrogênio recebido em “pacotes” menores, mais fáceis de manipular, para mandá-los aos segmentos de constrição magnética inferiores. Cada separador leva a uma válvula injetora, e cada válvula abre-se em ciclos, em resposta a sinais de controle do computador. A abertura das válvulas pode seguir seqüências complexas, resultantes de equações igualmente complexas que controlam a pressão da reação, temperatura, e energia produzida desejada

Segmentos de constrição magnética

Os segmentos de constrição magnética (SCM) superior e inferior constituem a massa central do núcleo. Esses componentes suportam a estrutura da câmara de reação matéria/antimatéria, fornecendo um ambiente com pressão apropriada para a operação do núcleo, e alinham os fluxos de matéria e antimatéria para o encontro dentro da câmara de reação. O SCM superior mede 18 metros de comprimento, e a unidade inferior mede 12 metros. Ambos tem 2,5 metros de diâmetro. Um segmento padrão é constituído de oito conjuntos de atenuadores de pressão, uma parede toroidal de pressão, doze conjuntos de bobinas constritoras, sistemas de alimentação de força e hardware de controle necessário. As bobinas constritoras são feitas de cobalto-lantanídeo-boronite de matriz forçada de alta intensidade, com trinta e seis elementos ativos configurados para prover uma alta intensidade de campo somente dentro do ambiente de pressão e permitindo apenas o mínimo (ou nenhum) vazamento para a Engenharia. As toróides do ambiente pressurizado são camadas alternantes de ferracita carbonítica formada por deposição de vapor e borosilicato de alumínio transparente. Os componentes de tensão vertical são vigas de tritânio e cortenide, e são soldadas à estrutura pelo método de transição de fase durante a montagem da estrutura do veículo para produzir uma estrutura unificada. Todos os pontos de suporte do motor têm dutos dedicados para receber energia do campo de integridade estrutural durante operação normal. A camada externa transparente serve como um medidor visível da performance do motor, já que fótons secundários inofensivos são emitidos das camadas interiores, criando um brilho azul visível. A ação peristáltica e o nível de energia podem ser facilmente vistos pelo Chefe Engenheiro e/ou pessoal de manutenção.

Assim que os fluxos de matéria e antimatéria são liberados de seus respectivos bocais, as bobinas constritoras comprimem ambos no eixo Y e adicionam uma velocidade de 200 a 300 m/s. Isto garante o alinhamento e energia de colisão apropriada para que ambos atinjam o alvo dentro da CRM/A, no exato centro da câmara. É precisamente neste ponto que a reação é mediada pelo cristal de dilítio.

Câmara de reação matéria/antimatéria

A câmara de reação matéria/antimatéria (CRM/A) consiste de duas cavidades idênticas, em forma de sino, que contêm e redirecionam a reação primária. A câmara mede 2,3 metros de altura e 2,5 metros de diâmetro. É composta de doze camadas de háfnio 6 e carbonítrio fundido com excélio, soldado por transição de fase sob uma pressão de 31.000 quilopascais. As três camadas externas são reforçadas com arkenídio acroseníte para uma proteção de até 10 vezes a pressão normal. Todos os outros pontos de sustentação e ligação com sistemas de transferência de energia recebem o mesmo reforço.

A banda equatorial da câmara contém o local de armazenamento para a estrutura de articulação do cristal de dilítio (EACD). Uma escotilha protegida fornece acesso a EACD para a substituição e ajustes do cristal. A EACD consiste de um berço com isolamento eletromagnético capaz de armazenar até 1200 cm^3 de cristal de dilítio, além de dois conjuntos redundantes de suportes e orientação triaxiais. O cristal tem que ser instalado com até seis graus de liberdade, para atingir os ângulos e profundidade necessários para a mediação da reação.

Conectando a banda equatorial à metade superior e inferior estão vinte e quatro pinos estruturais. Estes pinos são de moliferranite-háfnio 8 e são reforçados contra tensão, compressão, torção e cisalhamento, além de fazer parte do campo de integridade estrutural do motor. Por todo o centro da banda equatorial correm duas camadas de tritânio borocarbonato difuso transparente para uma monitoração visual da energia da reação.

CRM-A fica no centro do conjunto que tem a altura de um prédio de 12 andares.

O papel do Dilítio

O elemento chave no uso eficiente das reações de M/A é o cristal de dilítio. Este é o único material conhecido pela Federação que não é reagente a antimatéria quando exposto a um campo eletromagnético (EM) de alta freqüência na faixa dos megawatt, o tornando “poroso” ao anti-hidrogênio. O dilítio permite ao anti-hidrogênio passar diretamente através da sua estrutura cristalina sem de fato tocá-la, devido ao efeito de dínamo criado pelos átomos de ferro adicionados. A forma longa do nome do cristal é a fórmula de matriz forçada 2<5>6 dilítio 2<:>1 dialosilicato 1:9:1 heptoferranide. Esta estrutura atômica altamente complexa é baseada em formas mais simples descobertas em camadas geológicas naturais em certos sistemas planetários. Foi considerada por muitos anos irreproduzível por métodos conhecidos ou previstos de deposição de vapor, até que avanços em epitaxia e antieutética nucleares permitiram a formação de dilítio sintetizado puro para uso em espaço-naves e usinas de força, através de técnicas de composição de theta-matrizes utilizando bombardeamento por radiação gamma.

Geração de força pela CRM/A

A seqüência de ignição do motor, conforme controlado pelo CPCP é a seguinte:

1. A partir de uma condição fria, a temperatura e pressão totais do sistema são trazidas até 2.500.000 K, usando uma combinação de energia do sistema de eletroplasma (SEP) e do IMR, e um “aperto” dos constritores magnéticos superiores.

2. As primeiras quantidades mínimas de antimatéria são injetadas de baixo, pelo IAR. O SCM inferior espreme o fluxo de antimatéria e ajusta a sua mira para que coincida com a do IMR acima, fazendo com que ambos os fluxos caiam nas mesmas coordenadas XYZ dentro da CRM/A. O maior raio da reação é de 9,3 cm e o menor 2,1 cm. O diâmetro do fluxo no SCM superior e inferior pode variar, dependendo do ajuste de potência.

Existem dois modos de reação distintos. O primeiro envolve a geração de altos níveis de energia canalizados para o sistema de eletroplasma, muito similar a uma reação de fusão normal, para uso das funções da nave enquanto em impulso. Na EACD, os suportes de orientação posicionam o dilítio de tal maneira que duas faces fiquem paralelas aos fluxos de matéria/antimatéria, coincidindo com as coordenadas do núcleo XYZ 0,0,125, onde 125 é o raio da seção de reação. A reação é mediada pelo dilítio, forçando o limite superior das freqüências EM resultantes para baixo, até abaixo de 10^20 hertz, e o limite inferior para cima, até acima de 10^12 hertz.

O segundo modo faz uso completo da habilidade do dilítio de causar uma suspensão parcial da reação, criando as freqüências de pulso necessárias para serem enviadas para as naceles do motor de dobra. Neste modo, as coordenadas XYZ são controladas pelos suportes de orientação da EADC e colocam o exato ponto de colisão 20 angstrons acima da face superior do cristal. A freqüência desejada é continuamente ajustada para alcançar os fatores de dobra desejados. Independente do modo empregado, o efeito de aniquilação acontece no ponto central da câmara. A razão M/A é estabilizada em 25:1 e o motor é considerado em “ponto morto”.

3. A pressão do motor é lentamente trazida ate 72.000 quilopascais, aproximadamente 715 vezes a pressão atmosférica, e a temperatura normal de operação no ponto de reação é 2×10^12 K. Os bocais do IMR e IAR são abertos para permitir que mais reagentes entrem na câmara. A razão é ajustada para 10:1 para geração de energia. Esta também é a razão base para atingir dobra 1. As proporções relativas de matéria e antimatéria mudam enquanto os fatores sobem até dobra 8, onde a razão se torna 1:1. Fatores de dobra maiores requerem maiores quantidades de reagentes, mas a razão continua inalterada

Outros modos de ignição estão disponíveis, dependendo das necessidades da situação.

Dutos de condução de força

Assim que todo o sistema está ativado, o plasma energético gerado é dividido em dois fluxos em ângulos quase retos à linha central da nave. Os dutos de condução de força (DCF) são magneticamente parecidos com os segmentos de constrição, na característica de manter o plasma restrito ao centro de cada canal, e o impulsionam peristálticamente em direção às naceles de dobra, onde as bobinas de campo de dobra (BCD) utilizam a energia para propulsão.

Os DCF saem da engenharia para trás, onde interceptam os suportes do motor de dobra. Cada duto é fabricado de seis camadas alternantes de tritânio e borosilicato de alumínio transparente, que são soldados juntos por transição de fase para formar uma única estrutura resistente à pressão. As ligações com a câmara de reação são juntas que contêm explosivos de corte, e podem se separar do núcleo em 0,08 segundos, no caso da ejeção do mesmo. As juntas são instaladas durante a fabricação e não podem ser reutilizadas

Os dutos de transferência de força levam a energia até as naceles.

Tomadas do sistema de eletroplasma (SEP) estão localizadas em três pontos ao longo do DCF, a 5, 10 e 20 metros de distância das juntas explosivas. Tomadas do SEP estão disponíveis em três tipos, dependendo de sua aplicação. As do Tipo I tem uma capacidade de fluxo de 0,1 para sistemas de alta potência. As do Tipo II tem capacidade de 0,01 para dispositivos experimentais e as do Tipo III aceitam saídas de baixa potência para aplicações de conversão de energia.

CRM-A e os dois DCFs levando o plasa até as naceles

Dias antes da estréia de Jornada nas Estrelas nos cinemas haverá uma grande cerimônia de apresentação que ocorrerá na chamada premiere do filme (ainda sem local definido). É costume dos estúdios reservarem para esse evento poucos lugares, os quais ficarão restritos a convidados especiais como celebridades de Hollywood, autoridades e imprensa de um modo geral.

O produtor e diretor J. J. Abrams ofereceu dois convites dessa premiere como objetos de um leilão beneficiente em favor da Fundação Liberty Hill, na qual Abrams e sua esposa ajudam a longa data. A Fundação tem o objetivo de combater a pobreza e a injustiça. O leilão dos convites está sendo realizado pelo site Ebay e se encerrará no dia 11 de maio. Até o momento o último lance oferecido está no valor de dois mil e quinhentos dólares. Quem dá mais?

Seu último romance “Four Walls” (Quatro Paredes) entra em novo campo: é seu primeiro trabalho relacionado a C. S. I. : Nova York . DeCandido falou com Kristine Huntley da Trek Today sobre como começou sua carreira de escritor, seus últimos projetos e suas opiniões sobre o novo filme de Jornada nas Estrelas e a controvérsia SFWA/Nebula (SFWA – Associação dos Escritores de Ficção Científica; Nebula – uma associação que premia anualmente obras de ficção científica)

Trek Today: Você tem uma grande e impressionante bibliografia! Como começou?

Keith R, A. DeCandido: De certa forma não se pode copiar esse tipo de início! Eu trabalhava como editor encarregado de vários projetos de ficção científica. Meu primeiro conto eu e4screvi por necessidade. Na época eu era editor associado trabalhando com outro editor e estávamos fazendo uma série de antologias ligadas a estórias em quadrinhos e precisávamos de uma estória para uma antologia no último minuto porque o personagem da capa não estava no livro. Tínhamos uma porção de estórias que a Marvel tinha rejeitado. Finalmente eles nos deram um resumo do tipo de estória que gostariam de ver e eu apenas a escrevfi. Essa foi minha primeira venda, e então eu fiz um par de outros contos e depois um romance do Homem Aranha. A oportunidade de escrever uma estória do Dr. Who se apresentou por si só – quem estava editando aquela antologia estava fazendo uma estória para mim. Então outras coisas aconteceram e eu acabei ajudando Chris Golden e Nancy Holder no primeiro Guia dos fãs de Buffy a Caça Vampiros. E aquilo me deu a oportunidade de escrever um romance sobre Buffy. É um daqueles casos onde uma bola de neve sai rolando por uma colina – cada coisa se acrescenta a outra que você fez antes. Isso me deu a oportunidade de fazer um par de livros sobre Hércules. Assim que eu os escrevi, o editor dos livros de Jornada nas Estrelas mas nunca havia me pedido nada até depois que eu me estabelecesse no mercado – disse “Ei, gostaria de escrever um livro de Jornada nas Estrelas?” E foi aí que eu realmente fiz a maior parte dói meu trabalho. Eu escrevi mais de uma dúzia de livros de Jornada nas Estrelas. O livro de Andromeda apareceu porque eu fiz um livro de Farscape. E o livro de Farscape eu fiz tudo para conseguir. Eu o consegui e pela força dele, o editor dos livros de Andromeda me procurou e disse: “Bom, você fez um belo trabalho no livro de Frscape; gostaria de fazer um livro sobre Andrômeda?” E eu disse que sim. Essa era uma das permissões de TV que eu tive que conseguir – eu fiz o primeiro livro de Farscape, eu fiz o primeiro livro de Andromeda e fiz o primeiro o primeiro livro de Supernatural. Mas o único que eu vou fazer um segundo livro é Supernatural!

Trek Today: Você fez muito no mundo de Jornada nas Estrelas especialmente.

DeCandido: Até a série terminar no início do ano, eu era o editor da série mensal de e-Books, Jornada nas Estrelas: Engenheiros da Frota Estelar.

Trek Today: Porque a série terminou?

DeCandido: Em parte porque a série nunca aumentou seu perfil. Ela tinha um número estável de leitores que nunca diminuiu e nunca aumentou. E isso aconteceu por sete anos, o que é muito bom. Eles apenas acharam que não estava crescendo o suficiente para valer a pena investir dinheiro nisso. Ainda vamos fazer compilações impressas dos e-Books – nós ainda temos um caminho a seguir antes de terminá-los. Eu ainda faço alguns trabalhos de edição free-lancer em livros de Jornada nas Estrelas para a Pocket Books e ainda faço antologias para eles. Com Peter David, eu também fiz uma antologia “New Frontier” (Nova Fronteira).

Trek Today: Parece que há várias antologias aparecendo agora, e que têm aparecido várias nos últimos anos. Por que você pensa que o mercado vai agora para a linha das antologias?

DeCandido: Ainda há um romance (sendo publicado) a cada mês, onde há talvez uma ou duas antologias por ano, assim isso é apenas uma fração da série. Eu acho que nós continuamos vendo mais delas tem várias razões. Uma delas é que é um bom lugar para conseguir um tipo diferente de estória. Há algumas estórias que funcionam melhor em contos mais do que em estórias longas, especialmente com a limitação de doze livros por ano em relação aos vinte e quatro que existiram por dez anos entre 1995 e 2005. Isso lhe dá a oportunidade de usar diferentes escritores e uma variedade de tipos de estórias. E é divertido fazê-las! Isso é sobre variedade. Uma das coisas sobre o mundo ficcional de Jornada nas Estrelas, em parte porque há cinco séries de TV e outros tipos de prosa de Jornada nas estrelas como New Frontier e S. C. E., é que há muitos tipos diferentes de estórias para contar e antologias permitem isso. É uma maneira diferente de contar essas estórias.

Trek Today: Quanto tempo leva do tema à publicação para um romance ou antologia de Jornada nas Estrelas?

DeCandido: Isso varia. É em torno de um ano, mas mesmo assim, varia demais. Para lhe dar um exemplo, a antologia New Frontier “No Limits” que eu e Peter David fizemos foi iniciada em fevereiro de 2003. Foi publicada em outubro de 2003, o que foi um desenvolvimento super rápido! Geralmente não é tão rápido, mas varia muito. Algumas vezes você tem um tempo comodamente agradável para fazê-lo, outras vezes as coisas demoram. Como a antologia do Universo Espelho que deveria aparecer este mês e foi adiada para janeiro. Parte disso são os prazos disponíveis.

Trek Today: Você tem uma séire favotrita ou grupo de personagens para os quais você gosta de escrever?

DeCandido: Das séries de TV, a minha favorita é Deep Space Nine. Tendo dito isso, eu gosto de todos eles em um ou outro grau, mas eu acho que Deep Space Nine foi a mais forte da cinco séries. Sobre o que eu gosto de escrever: eu amo os klingons, o Corpo de Engenheiros da Frota Estelar – as tripulações de Gorkon e Da Vinci. Eu realmente gostei de Artigos da Federação, é difícil resumir isso. Uma coisa que eu notei na tripulação de Gorkon é que escrever sobre eles vem muito fácil para mim. O terceiro livro com a tripulação de Gorkon, Enemy Territory (Território Inimigo) – as palavras apenas saíam das minhas mãos quando eu escrevia aquele livro.

Trek Today: Há personagens das séries de TV sobre os quais você gosta de escrever?

DeCandido: Seriam Worf e Kira. Nos meus dois primeiros livros o primeiro foi sobre Worf e o Segundo sobre Kira. É irônico que isso funcionou dessa forma. E então depois do segundo eu continuei com uma estória que era inteiramente sobre Kira chamada “Horn and Ivory” (Em Jornada nas Estrelas: Gateways: What Lay Beyond). Assim esse dois provavelmente são meus preferidos, e eu também gostei de tratar com os personagens principais do Corpo de Engenheiros e Gorkon, Klag e Sonya Gomez. Mas aí, de novo, eu poderia citar muitos personagens! Mas dos personagens da Tv eu teria que escolher Worf e Kira.

Trek Today: Você tem alguma opinião sobre o novo filme, Jornada nas Estrelas XI?

DeCandido: Eu acho que a idéia geral de ir para o passado é uma má idéia. Eu acho que Jornada nas estrelas teve sucesso quando foi para o futuro. Dito isso, isso não tira a possibilidade do filme ter sucesso. E eu certamente tenho fé em Alex Kurtzman e Roberto Orci, que são geeks da mais alta ordem. Tenho sido fã de seus trabalhos desde seus dias em Xena. Eles gostam do material, o que é um ingrediente importante. Eu não tenho nenhuma objeção a ninguém do elenco. Não estou familiarizado com o ator que interpreta Kirk, mas eu acho que Zachary Quinto é perfeito para Spock, e Karl Urban (McCoy) pode interpretar qualquer coisa. Assim estou mais que confiante sobre isso. O problema é, você não pode julgar um filme até sentar no cinema e assisti-lo. Eu aprendi essa lição há muitos anos! Eu li os roteiros de Homens de Preto e o primeiro X-Men. Eu era uma das pesoas sendo consideradas para escrever as novelizações dos filmes. Assim eu vi os roteiros e pensei que eram terríveis. Achei que Homens de Preto era horrível e que X Men era uma bagunça generalizada. No caso de Homens de Preto, a escolha de Will Smith e Tommy Lee Jones podia cobrir uma grande quantidade de erros e no caso do roteiro de X-Men, tudo que eu não gostei terminou sendo cortado na versão final do filme. A respeito disso, eu li os primeiro seis roteiros de Terra: Conflito Final, e pensei que ia ser a melhor série de ficção científica já produzida. E fiquei surpreso! Foi o mesmo roteiro que eu li, mas eles conseguiram tirar toda a vida dele. Boatos valem menos que os pixels que estão sendo usados para iluminá-los, assim o único meio de julgar o filme é sentar no cinema e assisti-lo. Eu espero que dê certo por várias razões, e uma delas é porque um filme bem sucedido significará mais interesse nos livros e revistas em quadrinhos.

Trek Today: Outras novidades no universo de Jornada nas Estrelas é a indicação de um fan film para o prêmio Nebula: “World Enough and Time”. O que pensa sobre isso?

DeCandido: Eu penso que houve uma controvérsia dentro da SFWA, não no universo de Jornada nas Estrelas. Meu pensamento sobre isso não tem nada a ver com Jornada nas estrelas, mas cxom o fato da SFWA não seguir suas próprias regras. Tão maravilhoso quanto foi New Voyages/Fase II – ele pode ser, porque eu realmente não o vi – só que não é uma publicação profissional. E de fato o próprio James Cawley disse, no meio de toda essa confusão, que não pode ser legalmente um lançamento profissional. Essa é a razão pela qual a CBS os deixa fazerem isso, porque não é uma produção profissional. Assim se um filme não precisa ser profissional,então aquele código de regras precisa ser mudado.

Trek Today: Você gostaria de ver as regras mudadas?

DeCandido: O problema é que, com base nas regras, uma ficção feita por fãs pode ser indicada em qualquer das outras categorias, assim me parece que eles deveriam ser coerentes com relação a isso. Honestamente, eu não tenho autoridade para opinar sobre isso de uma forma ou de outra. Eu acho que se eles fizerem as regras dizerem isso, então eles devem segui-las, e se eles não fizerem isso, deveriam reescrever as regras. É mais um caso de coerência do que qualquer outra coisa. Eu também faço objeção a pessoas dizerem: “Bom, se há profissionais trabalhando nele, então deve ser uma produção profissional!” Não, não é. Se Kobe Bryant jogar basquete nas ruas, isso não faz disso um jogo da NBA. E o fato de Marc Zicaree, George Takei e vários outros estarem envolvidos nisso não muda o fato de ser um filme feito por fãs. Isso não o torna ruim. Eu já escrevi ficção de fã, eu gosto de ficção de fãs – eu acho que ficção de fãs é bom. De fato as pessoas que estão dizendo que isso não é verdadeiro estão insultando os reais produtores de ficção de fãs.

Trek Today: Você está escrevendo algumas das revistas de Jornada nas Estrelas?

DeCandido: IDW está fazendo uma nova minissérie focalizando alienígenas. A que acabou agora foi realmente um sucesso, assim eles estão fazendo uma segunda. Eu estou fazendo umamque é sobre klingons. Será lançada no próximo outono. A séire são edições isoladas que podem ser lidas em qualquer ordem. Os outros alineigenas na série são os Gorn, os vulcanos, os romulanos, os andorianos, os borg e os orion. Os outros que têm sido mencionados são os betazoides, os klingons e os ferengi. E eu adoro escrever estórias em quadrinhos. Tenho faado com a IDW sobre outros projetos. Não há nada acertado ainda, mas eu espero fazer muitas outras coisas para eles.

Trek Today: É muito diferente escrever uma estória em quadrinhos comparando com um romance ou um conto?

DeCandido: Sim, é muito diferente por várias razões. Primeiro, você tem uma quantidadem limitada de espaço em cada página. Você tem que resumir a estória porque você tem um número limitado de páginas para trabalhar – nossa série tem 22 por edição. Eu fui duro comigo mesmo porque são realmente três estórias em uma. Assim são basicamente três estórias de sete páginas em uma só edição, o que foi um desafio ainda maior. Você tem que tirar todo o excesso e ficar só na base da estória. Você também depende do desenhista para muitas coisas que você não tem que pensar quando está escrevendo prosa. Você tem que pensar mais nisso, e não tem que se preocupar com o visual e apenas pensar nos diálogos.

Trek Today: Você se envolve com as cores?

DeCandido: Depende da situação. Nesta situação particular, eu conversei com o desenhista antes de escrever a estória – ele tinha visto a proposta. Ele e eu conversamos sobre algumas coisas e discutimos alguns detalhes. Assim, eu tenho trabalhado de perto com o desenhista. Isso não acontece sempre. Algumas vezes você escreve o roteiro, entrega e deixa por isso mesmo.

Trek Today: Qual é o seu próximo projeto de Jornada nas estrelas que iremos ver?

DeCandido: Será um dos livros do Universo Myriad. Como o último pocket book do Universo Espelho, esse terá três estórias curtas em um pocket book e então outro pocket book com muitas outras estórias. Eles serão todos estórias “e se?” Como um exemplo – essa não é uma da estórias – “E se os Borg tivessem vencido em “O Melhor de Dois Mundos”? A que estou fazendo se chama “The Gutted World”. Ela envolve, entre outras coisas, que os cardassianos nunca tivessem saído de Bajor. Há outros assuntos, também, mas esse é o que é mais aparente na cópia da capa e o primeiro capítulo os cardassianos ainda estão em Bajor e em Terok Nor. E há outras conseqüências também. Eu não quero dizer qual é o ponto divergente porque isso é algo que você vai ter que descobrir de cara. – é um ponto do enredo. Estará no segundo volume chamado “Echoes and Retractions”. O primeiro volume sairá emjulho e se chamará “Infinity’s Prism” e acontecerá durante a série original e a mudança é que o movimento Terra Prime da Enterprise realmente venceu. A Terra nunca se envolveu na Federação e isso nos leva uns cem anos mais tarde e a Terra basicamente gostaria de se juntar a essa grande coalisão de planetas que se formou envolvendo vulcanos, andorianos, e telaritas. Essa é a estória de William Leinser. A estória de Christopher Bennet: pense sobre uma decisão feita por Janeway – ela fará uma decisão diferente. Eu não quero dizer qual. E James Swallow escreveu uma estória chamada “Seeds of Dissent” (Sementes da Discórdia) onde Khan venceu as Guerras Eugênicas. As outras duas estórias no segundo volume: uma envolve a única outra realidade alternativa que vimos na tela: “Yesteryear”(Perdido no Esquecimento), da série animada. Houve uma alteraçãp na linha do tempo onde Spock morreu ainda criança e o primeiro oficial da enterprise era um andoriano. E a estória seguirá essa linha do tempo. E a outra estória chamada “Brave New World” (Admirável Mundo Novo) em que o Dr. Noonien Soong não foi visto como maluco e criou andróides com sucesso. Essa é a próxima coisa que vai aparecer. Eu deveria dizer sobre “A Gutted World” que é a estória mais deprimente que eu já escrevi! Na capa, a última frase é “Nem a vitória pode trazer salvação” o que é bem o tema da estória. Há muitos distúrbios nele. No próximo outono haverá uma trilogia escrita por David Mack chamada “Destiny”(Destino). Uma grande trilogia com muitas intersecções trazendo elementos de todo o universo de Jornada nas Estrelas e terá sérias ramificações para qualquer coisa além disso. Basicamente qualquer romance que aconteça depois de Destiny (Destino) será afetado por ele. Ele acontece um ano e meio depois de Nemesis. Assim a ficção de Jornada nas Estrelas será para sempre afetada pelo que acontece em Destiny. Estou fazendo a primeira seqüência, que é mais um romance político – muito similar a “Articles of the Federation” e “The Art of the Impossible”, dois de meus romances anteriores. Tratará da queda política de Destiny. Pessoas que têm pedido um romance de Jornada nas Estrelas no estilo de Tom Clancy – esse vai ser assim! Há muito de “Caçada ao Outubro Vermelho” nele, sem os detalhes técnicos sobre submarinos.

Trek Today: Seu ultimo romance publicado, Four Walls (Quatro Paredes), não é ficção científica – é um livro baseado em CSI: Nova York. Como você chegou a esse projeto?

DeCandido: Não é meu assunto habitual como gênero porque geralmente eu escrevo ficção científica e fantasia, mas é meu habitual em termos de ser baseado em uma série de TV, o que eu já fiz muito. Eu escrevi romances de Jornada nas Estrelas, Buffy a Caça Vampiros, Supernatural, Farscape, Andromeda e alguns outros e escrevi alguns que poderiam ser qualificados como estórias de mistério mesmo que tenham sido publicadas como ficção científica. Eu escrevi um romance cha,mado “Dragon Precinct” que era parte fantasia parte mistério, e escrevi um par de livros de Homem Aranha que poderiam ser qualificados como mistério, assim como meu livro de Supernatural. Assim eu escrevi coisas que tem pelo menos algo de mistério. Eu também sou um grande fã de estórias que acontecem na cidade de Nova York. Os dois romances do Homem Aranha também acontecem em Nova York, escrevi um romance de Buffy que acontece na Nova York dos anos 70 – um dos antigos caça Vampiros trabalhava lá. Assim no geral – eu amo escrever estórias que aconteçam na minha cidade natal de Nova York. Assim o editor de CSI – Nova York sabia disso. Eu originalmente havia pedido para trabalhar nos livros quando a série estreou, entretanto o editor da Pocket Books preferiu, por razões perfeitamente compreensíveis, continuar com o autor de mistério ganhador do prêmio Edgar!(Edgard é um prêmio dado pela associação Mistery and Detective Writers of America – o nome é referência ao escritor Edgard Rice Burroughs – N. T.) Stuart Kaminsky fez os três primeiros romances. O contrato da Pocket Books sempre estabelece quatro livros. No final Stuart não estava disponível para o quarto livro assim o editor, que era alguém com quem eu já havia trabalhado antes, virou para mim e disse: “Você ainda gostaria de fazer isso?” E eu disse sim. Então foi assim que isso aconteceu.

Como tantos dos atores reinterpretando os personagens da série original, Zoe Saldana se sentiu honrada ao conhecer a pessoa que originou seu personagem.

Conforme relatado por News Blaze, Saldana, que está pegando o papel originado por Nichelle Nichols, conseguiu conhecê-la em pessoa. “Sim, eu a conheci, e me senti tão humilde por ter encontrado um tal ícone,” disse Saldana. “Ela é uma mulher impressionante e um  ser humano muito forte. Isso foi muito interessante, como foi trabalhar com Leonard Nimoy. Eu senti que todo o elenco e eu mesma fomos honrados ao representar os papéis da tripulação original da Enterprise. Nós realmente esperamos não desapontá-los.”

A própria Nichols se sentiu impressionada com Jornada nas Estrelas XI, de acordo com uma entrevista a Jonja.net, onde ela disse algo que pode ser considerado como uma dica da estória. “Eu penso que foi fantástico, por que é uma estória anterior,” ela disse, da estória. “Não é como se eles estivessem substituindo Uhura do ponto em que paramos os filmes, o que seria direito deles fazer. Também eu poderia tê-los atacado fisicamente (se o tivessem feito). Mas este é uma estória anterior, os meses anteriores, o tempo anterior, e termina com o início daquela missão de cinco anos onde nenhum homem ou mulher jamais esteve. E eu soube que é maravilhoso.”

Uma visita ao set de filmagens foi agradável para Nichols devido à reação dos atores trabalhando no set quando a viram. “Eu recebi uma ligação de J. J. e ele me convidou para almoçar para perguntar como eu me sentia,” ela disse. “Ele me fez a cortesia, a honra de fazer isso. Eu achei isso inacreditável. Então fui para o set e eles estavam filmando……e quando entrei no set, eu estava muito silenciosa e andando por ali e repentinamente tudo parou. Eu quero dizer que os atores simplesmente pararam em seus lugares. Eles me viram entrando e eles estavam em suas falas e diziam algo como ‘e senhor nós temos o……..’ E isso foi uma tal honra derramada sobre mim. Porque eu comecei ‘Oh, me desculpem!’ e então aquilo quebrou a formalidade e todos riram. Foi muito, muito engraçado.

George Takei já disse como conheceu J. J. Abrams, o diretor de Jornada nas Estrelas XI, antes da escolha do elenco e que ele aprova entusiasticamente o novo Sulu, John Cho.

Mas em uma nova entrevista a Cinema Spy, o Sulu original diz que ele ajudou Abrams a superar a reação dos fãs com a escolha de um ator não japonês para o papel de Sulu.

Takei diz a Cinema Spy:

Ele estava preocupado porque ia escalar um ator de origem coreana e pensou que podia haver alguma discussão com os fãs de Jornada nas Estrelas. Eu disse a ele que a idéia de Gene (Roddenberry) era que Sulu representasse toda a Ásia…….. Aparentemente J. J. não sabia disso, assim ele se sentiu aliviado com essa informação e continuou com a escalação de John Cho.

No resto da entrevista Takei conta como foi dado a Sulu um nome de nacionalidade não específica para permitir ao personagem representar toda a Ásia. Certamente é uma boa notícia ver que Abrams levou em consideração a sensibilidade dos fãs quando tomou as decisões de escolha do elenco (e consultou o ator original) Conforme relatado antes, J. J. Como relatado em Scifi.com, parte do apelo de Jornada nas Estrelas não é ser julgada de acordo com a cultura ou a etnia de cada um. Tahir se sentiu honrado ao interpretar o primeiro capitão originário do Oriente Médio. “O que eu amo sobre essa idéia e que, para mim, isso dá muita esperança de que no futuro todas essas divisões raciais desaparecerão.” ele disse. “E esse é o espírito de Jornada nas Estrelas, certo? É sobre ir além de tudo isso. Para mim, como um ator, foi muito libertador ser capaz de fazer isso, onde meu personagem não era visto através do prisma de minhas ligações étnicas e culturais. Isso eram vistos como ser competente ou incompetente; através de que tipo de capitão eu seria naquela situação. O que importa são os méritos do personagem, mais do que suas tradições.”

Trabalhar em Jornada nas Estrelas XI foi como voltar à infância para o ator que interpreta o Capitão Robau. “A primeira coisa é que de repente você volta aos nove anos de idade quando você compreende que estará em Jornada nas Estrelas como um capitão,” Tahir explicou. “Você entra na ponte e vê aquela ponte, e seu primeiro pensamento não é “Qual é a minha fala?”. Seu primeiro momento  dentro de si mesmo é “Nossa! Eu estou na ponte de uma nave da Federação, e eu sou o capitão.’ Foi exatamente isso que veio à minha cabeça. Você tem que esquecer isso, e aí você pensa, “Ok, agora deixe que ele realmente trabalhe.”

Tahir brevemente será visto em “O Homem de Ferro”, onde ele interpretou o papel de um líder rebelde afegão, Raza, que é um vilão. “Homem de Ferro” estreará em 02 de maio.

News Blaze postou uma nova entrevista com a atriz Zoe Saldana, onde ela fala brevemente sobre seu papel como a nova Uhura no filme de Jornada nas Estrelas dirigido por J. J. Abrams. Aqui está um trecho.

KW: Eu sei que você interpretará a tenente Uhura no próximo filme de Jornada nas Estrelas. Você discutiu o papel com Nichelle Nichols, a atriz que originou o personagem?

ZS: Sim, eu a conheci, e me senti tão humilde ao encontrar um ícone. Ela é uma mulher impressionante e um ser humano muito forte. Foi muito interessante, da mesma forma como foi trabalhar com Leonard Nimoy (O Sr. Spock original) Eu senti como se  todo o elenco e eu mesma fossemos honrados ao preencher os lugares da tripulação original da nave estelar Enterprise. Nós realmente esperamos não desapontá-los.

O diretor e produtor J. J. Abrams voltou a falar um pouco mais sobre o filme de Jornada na Estrelas. Embora continue em sua meta de manter tudo em sigilo até a estréia, ou pelo menos, até a exibição do primeiro trailer do filme, Abrams teceu comentários a respeito dos efeitos especiais, da audiência e fez um contraste com Clovefield. Apesar dos comentários de que o filme seja um reboot (recontar uma história de maneira diferente), Abrams sempre faz questão de frisar o seu respeito pela visão de Gene Roddenberry, criador da série, e a obediência aos eventos já estabelecidos. No entanto, o objetivo dele e do estúdio é de agradar ao público em geral e não somente aos fãs, “A audiência que estamos construindo esse projeto é para as pessoas que adoram filmes e não para pessoas que gostem somente de filmes de Jornada. Não estou dizendo que não estamos honrando o que foi feito antes, mas se fizéssemos um filme somente para eles (fãs) estaríamos limitando loucamente nossa audiência”, disse ao site Chron.com.

Continuando a falar sobre a audiência, disse Abrams em entrevista ao site Reuters, “O desafio de Jornada é pegar alguma coisa dela, que apesar da bagagem que carrega é imaginativa e irreal, e fazer com que se pareça tão real quanto possível. O ponto central no material em que estou sendo capaz de trabalhar refere-se a levar histórias não convencionais e combiná-las com pessoas, como nós”.

Durante o programa G4’s Attack of the Show, Abrams falou ainda a respeito de como anda a pós-produção do filme e como serão os efeitos especiais, “Bem, nós estamos cortando (cenas) agora, estamos editando o filme. E obviamente, essa Jornada terá zilhões de efeitos visuais. Nós estamos com sorte de termos a ILM (Industrial Light and Magic) fazendo esses efeitos e eles são espetaculares. Estou apenas começando a ver algumas das cenas deles e é de enlouquecer”.

Abrams falou também sobre a possibilidade de fazer uma sequência para Cloverfield. O filme já foi lançado em DVD (nos EUA) e embora Cloverfield tenha correspondido as expectativas do produtor, como um projeto de baixo orçamento e boa aceitação, ele não se compara com a produção de Jornada, “Cloverfield é suposto ser um video tape, encontrado durante a sequência do próprio filme. Isso é um tipo de coisa que você assiste na televisão. Apesar do que eu nunca diria algo assim para um filme como Jornada, o qual é um filme grandioso, épico, para grandes massas. Nós já encerramos as gravações e estamos começando a edição. Foi uma excitante, desafiante, mas satisfatória experiência. Estou torcendo para que você veja o filme”, disse o produtor que, de acordo com o site Variety, já vai entrar em outro gênero de entretenimento, as comédias.

Pegg sobre o que gostaria de ter perguntado ao falecido James Doohan:

Provavelmente eu só gostaria de ouvir algumas histórias de bastidores. Eu penso que teria sido engraçado ouvir sobre o que acontecia durante as filmagens, partilhar algumas lembranças com ele. Estou certo de que as coisas surgiriam durante a conversa. Quando você se senta com alguém que interpretou o personagem daquela forma durante tanto tempo você conseguirá algum tipo de esclarecimento – é uma tragédia que ele já se foi, de qualquer forma, mas é também uma vergonha que eu não tenha podido falar com ele.

Pegg sobre o diretor J. J. Abrahams e sua visão de Jornada nas Estrelas:

Com relação a trabalhar com J. J., ele é um diretor muito entusiasmado e realmente inteligente. Ele realmente compreende a série. Ele é extremamente minucioso quando se trata da série, e é extremamente fiel a ela. Ele ama o filme, e eu acho que isso é muito importante. Pelo que eu tenho visto do design de produção, é uma fusão fantástica entre o agora e o que era. É realmente uma linha muito fina para se andar – se você fizer tudo completamente como era, pareceria fora de lugar, assim você precisa ajustar isso um pouco. Eu creio que isso tem sido feito o suficiente para fazer funcionar. É realmente Jornada nas Estrelas e eu acho que fizeram um trabalho impressionante nele.

Simon Pegg se descreve como um “geek” e um trekker, e depois de trabalhar nesse filme ele sente que ele respeita seus colegas fãs:

Há muito para respeitar. Estamos conscientes da magnitude disso. É uma grande responsabilidade: não é um filme de Starsky e Hutch, algum tipo de paródia nostálgica. Este realmente é um filme genuinamente sério. Tem elementos de alegria, como em todos os filmes de Jornada nas Estrelas, mas há muitas coisas maravilhosas que eu penso que os fãs de Jornada nas Estrelas vão sentir, se sentirem familiares com elas. Há muitos detalhes para as pessoas que conhecem a série. Eu acho que todos vão gostar dele, qualquer um que vá vê-lo, mas será especialmente apreciado pelos fãs de Jornada nas estrelas porque há muitos detalhes que estão lá especificamente para eles.
