Yes, The River Knows and Five To One are both taken from The Doors third album Waiting for the Sun which was released in 1968. Both are classic doors songs yet sound nothing alike. Kanye West jacked Five to One for Jay-z’s The Takeover 33 years later on the Blueprint album which was a diss track to Nas and Prodigy of Mobb Deep. But that’s beside the point, peep Jim Morrison do his thing on both tracks and oh yea nuff respect due to Ray Manzarek for revolutionizing the organ game.

An old John Lee Hooker song, The Doors played this song early in their career together and then pulled it out, dusted it off and recorded it for their last album, L.A. Woman. This song showcases Mr. Mojo Risin’ at his bluesy best with snakey guitar wails from Robby Krieger and tasteful, swaggering drumming provided by John Densmore. This was recorded and broadcast for Australian television in 1971, not long before Morrison’s shocking and untimely death in Paris. While much of The Doors’ catalogue is overplayed on classic rock stations around the globe every day, this is one of their tracks that always sounds fresh to me. Hooker himself stated that he dug The Doors’ interpretation of his song. Have a listen:

The basis of the legal wrangle was a 1970 agreement – signed by the four original band members, including Jim Morrison – stating that all four of them would have to agree to any business deals.

The Doors, my all-time favorite band (yes, I’m young, but ’60s and ’70s rock is the greatest music ever comprised, hands down), are now modernly used for marketing purposes, pretty much. Jim Morrison, who cultivated the name of the group in 1965 with Ray Manzarek, derived the name from Aldous Huxley’s opus “The Doors of Perception.”

The music The Doors sounded out was like no other during its time. While other popular bands in the ’60s were soliciting peace and love, protesting the war with potent medleys, The Doors were having the bulk of their music be overwhelmed by the Vox Continental keyboard-playing by Ray Manzarek and the deep, dark poetry of lead singer Jim Morrison, while Robby Krieger used his own fingernails — instead of a pick — to play the guitar, and John Densmore banged the drums in the background. What made The Doors special — besides the deep, dark poetry and the loud blaze of the keyboards — was that their war protest was different — more dark and sadistic, as exemplified in the medley “Unknown Soldier.”

Jim Morrison never intended to be a singer. He wanted to be known as a poet. He thought that his poetry could live vicariously through his songwriting and through the passion that was internally embedded in The Doors. Sadly he was mistaken, as his music legend grew and fans grew to adore him as a rockstar. That explains why he grew a beard, blatantly became fat, and part of the reason he moved to Paris at the end of his life (the other reason is because of the Miami incident).

As was mentioned, Morrison merely wanted to get his words out. He didn’t want to have The Doors’ music playing on any commercials or being used to persuade people in any situation. Not even the most sparse amount of advertising.

But here we are, in 2009, and 70-year-old Ray Manzarek is the catalyst in paving the way to continuously speaking the word of The Doors. And of course, that’s fine! But the problem is, now, that he and Robby Krieger are tagging along in this new band called “The Doors of the 21st Century,” which was inaugurated in 2002. As of today, they have been playing alongside Eddie Vedder and Angelo Barbera.

The fact that Manzarek continues to up the amp on the myth that Jim Morrison is living somewhere in South Africa is a ludicrous claim to get more hype and publicity.

Thanks, Manzarek, but no thanks. Do the Beatles thing and let it be.

After Jim Morrison died suddenly of an apparent drug overdose in the summer of 1971, the remaining three members of The Doors tried to make a go of it as a trio, but their two albums, 1971’s Other Voices and 1972’s Full Circle failed to gain much attention and the band parted ways. Guitarist Robbie Krieger and keyboardist Ray Manzarek found some success as solo artists, while drummer John Densmore dropped mostly out of site (except for a brief stint with Krieger in the mid-70s Butts Band and on Krieger’s late 70s solo albums). Krieger released seven albums between 1977 and 2000, including Door Jams (September 22, 1989). All are decent (but hard to find) instrumental jazz-rock fusion collections where Krieger returns to his pre-Doors interest in almost anything but the trademark blues-rock of The Doors. And the reworks of old Doors tunes on Door Jams provide an opportunity for Krieger to remind us that he wrote many of the Doors’ biggest hits, including “Light My Fire,” “Love Her Madly,” “Love Me Two Times” and “Touch Me.” The Doors are in the Playlist Vault on DrRock.com. Door Jams is available as a CD on Amazon.

-Father?

-Yes, son?

-I want to kill you…

-Mother?

-I want to… fuck you!!!.

When he was 15 years old, Michael Stipe saw Patti Smith on the cover of Creem magazine and thought that she looked like Morticia Addams. And because of that he went and bought her seminal album, Horses, and and album that he says “tore my limbs off and put them back on in a whole different order.”

This album, if you didn’t know, is good. It’s desert island good. And whenever you see someone compiling a list of top albums, be it 100 best or 500 best or even just a 20 Near-as-damn-it perfect initial efforts list, then guess what? This album is on there.

And while a song like “The End” by the Doors may be talked about more, and may even have made a bigger splash on the cultural consciousness, which is not something I can say I always care about, especially since Patti Smith’s Horses contains probably one of my favorite songs ever in rockdom, “Land: Horses/Land of a Thousand Dances/La Mer (De),” a nearly 20 minute mega-opus (suck it, “The End,” which is only 12 minutes long) to something dark and primal and horribly and wonderful danceable in our core. It makes “The End” look like an even bigger cartoon than it already is.

Of course, that doesn’t say much at all, really. Patti Smith was developing a raw but intellectual and very feminist kind of rock n’ roll and Jim Morrison was just getting fatter and more ridiculous in his “Lizard King” and “erotic politician” rut.

Like so many men, Robert Mapplethorpe had a thing for women and snakes.

As a classic rock fan, especially growing up, I went through a phase of idolizing Morrison, rock n’ roll’s favorite jester, and most everyone else probably did too. It was junior high for me, as I sat there and read John Desmore’s biography, and thought about how much it sucked that Jim died and entertained notions in my brain that maybe he faked his death and was alive somewhere out there playing Chinese checkers with John Lennon and Elvis and JFK and… man, what an idiot I was.

“Most of my poems are written to women because women are most inspiring. Who are most artists? Men. Who do they get inspired by? Women. The masculinity in me gets inspired by the female. I fall in love with men and they take over. I ain’t no women’s lib chick. So I can’t write about a man, because I’m under his thumb, but a woman I can be male with. I can use her as my muse. I use women.”

-Patti Smith, from Please Kill Me: An Uncensored Oral History Of Punk by “Legs” McNeil and Gillian McCain.

But that was a long time ago and eventually I went through a Patti Smith phase. I don’t know when it ended, if ever, really, but I can tell you where it began, it’s infancy being somewhere in 1996. That’s when REM’s New Adventures In Hi-Fi album came out, with it’s first single being “E-Bow The Letter,” featuring Patti Smith.

I had always known of REM before that album because I was a child who grew up with the radio and the MTV within reach, but with this album I realized that they were something better than what the radio or the vapid “music television” of the time could offer you. There was an eccentric warmth and depth to their music, and with this single, I was captivated because at the time, it was just so wonderfully bizarre. I wish I could post the actual music video up there for you, but that live performance will have to do, If not, here’s REM performing the song at the Tibetan Freedom Concert back in 1998 (God, do you remember those?) with that lazy eyed (that’s for you, Light) Thom Yorke. I remember that Yorke did a fine job with the song, but you can’t tell in the video because of the poor sound recording on his face. Though he does a fine job here on another song I love off the same album, “Be Mine.”

That’s where my Patti Smith phase began. It crystallized roughly a year later while watching the second season finale of Millennium. Remember that show? Probably not. It was Chris Carter’s second baby after X-Files, during the era of weird grim and gritty crime procedurals that featured vision-having (“It’s my gift, it’s my curse”) psychics, this one being Lance Henriksen, who has a face like a wall of stone and a voice like a rock polisher. The first season was fairly decent enough, but you could tell that Carter was getting bored running the show, so he handed it off in the following season to his proteges Glen Morgan and James Wong (and the proto-Charlie Kaufman, Darin Morgan), two guys who can’t possibly do a decent movie, but you hand them genre TV and they may very well be geniuses.

I assume that their only direction in taking over the show during it’s second year was “Hey guy, I don’t know how in the fuck we got a second season pickup, but I’m sure we’re going to get canceled. Do whatever the hell you want, be weird as shit, and have some fun,” and that’s what they did, and let me tell you, it was excellent. Possibly one of the smartest and coolest single years of a TV show that I had ever seen, but a dangerous beauty it was. And then there was the apocalyptic season finale of that second year, in which a character has a… Well, to call it a mental breakdown brought on by the heaviness of the moment would be a bit of an under statement, but it’ll do in a pinch. But what makes the breakdown so perfect, and helps solidify that year of TV as a strong one for this show is that they developed a whole act of the show to that moment, which took the form of essentially a music video for Patti Smith’s “Land” off of Horses:

There I was back in 1997, a stupid kid in high school, curious as to how the season would end when this season came on and that scene comes on, and my mind blown and possibly ruined forever. Without describing the previous year of the show to you, let’s just say there’s a nice bit of imagery summing up events there and offering portents for quite a few of the characters. And it’s a pretty wonderful interpretation of the song as well (as well as a decent job of editing the song down to an under ten minute run time).

Patti Smith “Land: Horses/Land Of A Thousand Dances/La Mer (De)” (mp3)

You just gotta cool off somehow." src="http://i638.photobucket.com/albums/uu103/peanutsparks/Patticoolingoff.jpg" alt="" width="314" height="454" />Other than those two bits of anecdotal history, I’m not going to talk about what this song means to me personally or anything of that nonsense. That’s just for me. Listen to the song, hopefully enjoy it, and find your own meaning and enjoyment in it, if there is any in it for you. I will just say that I do love the way the verse appropriated from Chris Kenner’s “Land Of A 1000 Dances” fits into the song, and other than that… do you remember an artist from several years ago by name of KT Tunstall?

If you don’t, well, then it’s not surprising since it’s been a few years. She was a harmless enough artist who I only bring up because her song “Suddenly I See” (and her career as well, possibly) was reportedly inspired by the cover to Patti Smith’s Horses album (which was shot by Robert Mapplethorpe), by the sight of a woman who was confident and comfortable as a rock n’ roll star. The cover to Tunstall’s album Eye To The Telescope is supposed to be an homage to the cover of Horses, but personally, I don’t feel it.

There’s a little place, a place called space, it’s a pretty little place…

Well, that’s just a bit on one of my favorite songs. Now I’d like to hear about one of yours.

James Douglas Morrison aka The Lizard King aka Mr. Mojo Risin’ soll ja bekanntlich am 3.

Sollte Morrison ins Gefängnis müssen, würde er “neutralisiert” werden – Originalzitat: “Fink was quietly told that his famous client would be neutralized in prison – murdered or incapacitated – and should get out of the country before his legal appeals were exhausted and his passport confiscated.” (Quelle)

Jim & Pam: Letzte Tage in Paris

The grave is too short!“.

Warum also war Morrison wirklich in Paris?

1975 erschien dann ein Buch namens “The Bank Of America Of Lousiana“, verfasst von einem “Jim Morrison“; am Ende dieses überaus seltsamen Werkes ein äusserst kryptischer Satz: “B of A & Company, USA… where monkey business is big business.” Danny Sugerman gegenüber äußerte er sich mehrmals in dieser Richtung- Zitat von Thomas Lyttle: “Morrison also told Danny Sugarman and Jerry Hopkins on more than one occasion that he could see himself “radically changing careers, reappearing as a suited and neck-tied businessman.“

This is the inauguration of what will become a regular weekly column on iRoM: “On Second Thought.” The intention is to call into question certain sacred cows in the history of popular music, separating the myth from the reality and debunking the accepted wisdom. We encourage readers to respond.

by Dave Gebroe

“Break on through to the other side.” Track one, side one, album one. A band’s statement of intent. There it is, clear as day.

And it’s all downhill from there.

In case you’re in desperate need of a helping hand in stamping out the floating embers of lemming-mindedness foisted on the classic rock populace, please allow me: The Doors were a mediocre cocktail jazz outfit fronted by a shirtless magalomaniac capable of a level of lyrical insight no more profound than your standard high school poetry of the misunderstood. If Jim Morrison, the narcissistic clown who fronted this band, hadn’t found his way into the Doors, he inevitably would have stumbled half-drunk into founding a church that promised salvation to his female followers if they bathed 24/7 in pools of his semen.

Morrison thought he was leading a new generation of spiritual seekers into the promised land of self-knowledge by guiding them through prolonged states of Dionysian abandonment, but the real legacy of his work isn’t even his music. It’s not his poetry or “philosophy.”

Jim Morrison in 1967 as captured by photographer Joel Brodsky

It’s that goddamned iconic poster. You know the one — arms outstretched, oozing with dead-eyed pomposity. This execrable cornerstone of the head shop industry has adorned many a high school student’s bedroom wall, serving as a reminder to act like a defiant prick whenever the opportunity arose and to redefine substance abuse as a “life pursuit.”

If you already own the poster, there’s no real reason to bother with the records. With a band like the Doors, the music is pure afterthought. “Light My Fire” is like listening to a Bowery bum launch into a long-winded seduction attempt without a clue as to how to close the deal. In fact, with its air of “journeying into the unknown,” the Doors’ debut is littered with boneheaded, below-average dive bar pickup lines. It reminds me of the time I approached a dewy-eyed hippie chick doing the blooming-flower dance in the drum circle and got a slap in the face when I invited her to “ride the snake to the lake.” My only saving grace is that I didn’t utilize a quote from “Back Door Man.”

I do begrudgingly admit that there are a couple of songs that don’t sound like a bar mitzvah cover band winding down the night at a Holiday Inn. “The Crystal Ship” and “End of the Night” are sparkling works of narcoleptic beauty, low-key and graceful in ways the Doors were never to know again. It’s only here that the band truly fulfills any potential that people seem to feel they may have had.

But then there’s “The End.” Take a face from an ancient gallery and let’s walk on down the hall, shall we? The same people who find these lyrics profound stand staunch in their belief that Roger Waters’ toddler-level simplification of pig/dog/sheep personality classifications on Pink Floyd’s “Animals” is the master class of psychological evaluation. Although utilized in an undeniably powerful way in Francis Ford Coppola’s “Apocalypse Now,” freed of its context from the shackle-busting sixties this laborious, droopy-lidded, self-consciously epic psychodrama feels very considered in an “Oh, my stars! Did he really say that?” way. Kill your dad, do your mom and ride Jim’s trouser snake to the west. Because, well…it’s the best. Sure, the moral of this particular story doesn’t quite pack a Seuss-level life lesson, but there is admittedly plenty to take away especially if you’re a misanthrope, or at least stoned enough to get into a misanthropic mind frame for eleven minutes and forty-two seconds. Thus does the mother of all pretentious epics close the mother of all pretentious, ham-fisted debut records.

“The Doors” is consistently ranked as one of the best albums of all time. This has always been a mystery to me. Rolling Stone, asphyxiating on the dusty saliva of the past, ranked it at 42 in their exalted “500 Greatest Albums of All Time.” Objectively, this is simply incorrect, an opinion born of unquestioned, blind acceptance. As the mold continues to set on this notion and far more talented bands from that time and place — not just seminal, but talented — are relegated to mere footnotes, the concept of what’s fair and unfair in popular culture is brought into play in a big way.

In stark contrast to most other Los Angeles bands of that time, there wasn’t a shred of connective aspiration to be found in Morrison’s approach. He sang like the audience was lucky to be there. Unlike, say, Arthur Lee – a tripped-out head case, to be sure, but a head case with more talent in his little pinkie than all four Doors on a night when they were cooking. And along with that talent came a desire to actully communicate with his audience. When all is said and done, now that the remnants of broken barriers have been washed away in the mists of time, what’s left of the seminal permissiveness of the Doors’ oeuvre is an indecently exposed wiener — a wiener that, in all probablility, suffered from alcohol-induced shrinkage on that fateful night.

Jim Morrison wound up breaking through to the other side, all right. Unfortunately, all he found waiting for him was a bloated parody of himself. There were no blue buses, nor were there any lake snakes, and, frankly, the only weird scene inside the gold mine is that people gave a good goddamn about this record.

While not objectively spot-on in his assessment of rock history, Dave Gebroe can be found diligently toiling away in a multi-faceted, auteur-like capacity in his effort to change the face of the modern-day horror film. (See http://www.zombiehoneymoon.com for more details). He also loves lists, proof of which can be found at http://top101albumsof2008.wordpress.com/2008/12/09/3/

matar, matar, matar

este es el fin
