That should be our goal: To be so in love in what we do that our vocation becomes our vacation-and who wants to retire from a vacation?

Rock God Cred Report: Just released this week from Fantasy Records…”Creedence Clearwater

Rock God Cred Report:

Just released this week from Fantasy Records…”Creedence Clearwater Revival…The Singles Collection”. An excellent compilation of CCR’s well know releases, and some that flew under the radar.

The bounty consists of two cd’s containing their 30 single releases from the years 1968-1972…plus a dvd with actual promo videos for the songs “I Heard It Through The Grapevine”, “”Bootleg”, I Put a Spell On You”, and “Lookin’ Out My Back Door”. Famed “Rolling Stone” writer, Ben Fong Torres, provides liner notes for the 16 page booklet.

The “CCR Singles Collection”, offers something for everybody…the essential hits for the fan who is just discovering the band, and some of the non charting tunes for the long time fan that digs all of the deeper cuts the band produced. For the music nerds (like me…) I am always interested in the original single mixes or 45 edits…and each version is on here, as it was originally released.

Fantasy Records is also releasing (for the completists out there…) a deluxe vinyl collectors edition featuring reproductions of the original CCR 45’s on vinyl, and with the rare picture sleeves. Niiiiiiice!

Buy the cd or digital “Creedence Clearwater Revival-The Singles Collection”

Tracklist:

Disc One: “Porterville”, “Call It Pretending”, “Suzie Q pt1″, “Suzie Q pt2″, “I Put a Spell on You”, “Walk on Water”, “Proud Mary”, “Born on The Bayou”, “Bad Moon Rising”, “Lodi”, “Green River”, “Commotion”, “Fortunate Son”, “Down on The Corner”, “Travelin’ Band”, and “Who’ll Stop The Rain”

Disc Two: “Run Through The Jungle”, “Up Around The Bend”, “Long as I Can See The Light”, “Lookin’ Out My Back Door”, “Have You Ever Seen The Rain”, “Hey Tonight”, “Sweet Hitch-Hiker”, “Door to Door”, “Someday Never Comes”, “Tearin’ Up The Country”, “I Heard It Through The Grapevine (single edit)”, “Good Golly, Miss Molly”, “45 Revolutions Per Minute (Part 1)”, “45 Revolutions Per Minute (Part 2)”

El Pardo, Madrid, último sábado de octubre, hora del aperitivo, sol de justicia, familiares y demás

El Pardo, Madrid, último sábado de octubre, hora del aperitivo, sol de justicia, familiares y demás desconocidos por doquier… ¿No entendéis nada?

Don Henley y Timothy B. Schmit de Eagles en Garden Party y Bruce Springsteen en When Will I Be Loved.

1. Paradise
2. Never Ending Song of Love
3. Garden Party
4. I Don’t Care (Just As Long As You Love Me)
5. Back Home Again
6. I’ll Be There (If You Ever Want Me)
7. Change In the Weather
8. Moody River
9. Heaven’s Just A Sin Away
10. Fallin’, Fallin’, Fallin’
11. Haunted House
12. When Will I Be Loved

To celebrate the show’s anniversary and his new record, Nelson returns with Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel for a very special “Willie and the Wheel” episode on Saturday, November 14 at 11:00 p.m. It’s just one of several special episodes this month, highlighted by a complete hour with Pearl Jam. It’s been 18 years since the band’s seminal debut, Ten, and in a sign that it may be a strong as ever, the band’s latest, Backspacer, just hit number one. Catch the show that Billboard describes as, “Vedder and the band…riffing with the crowd as if everyone was mingling at a party rather than at the taping of a legendary TV music series,” on Saturday, November 21 at 11:00 p.m.

Got a request for John Fogerty? Here’s your chance to make it. Saturday, November 7 at 8:00 p.m. NPT offers a very special broadcast of John Fogerty – Live By Request. Just like it sounds, Fogerty will be performing live and taking requests from you and other PBS viewers around the nation who call into the special toll-free number. If you want to experience Fogerty even more live, scroll down for a chance to win tickets to his performance at the Ryman on November 22.

American Masters profiles Woody Guthrie. Independent Lens shares the emotional roller coaster ride of Roque Wave drummer Pat Spurgeon as he awaits a kidney transplant, and for those who missed it when it was pre-empted earlier this year, Great Performances offers an encore broadcast of Harlem in Montmartre.

Congratulations to our winners, Sheila Lawrence and Steve Morley, who each get a pair of tickets to see John Fogerty at the Ryman. We also wanted to give a nod to Michael Davis, who gets an honorable mention. Thanks!

Winners:

Sheila Lawrence
Wish i had a dollar for every time i’ve been told
“Your song’s gonna be a hit, if we can get it ‘on hold’!”
And for every time of closing sunset grill
Talking music and drinking gin
Oh lord, stuck in nashville again…..

Steve Morley
I’m singin’ in a bar on Broadway, back home they think I’m doin’ okay
But they don’t know that Music Row might as well be a world away
And you won’t hear no country now from the stage at the Exit/In
Oh, Lord, stuck in Nashville again

Honorable Mention:

Michael Davis
When I was just seventeen
I thought I had made my plans -
I’d be a big hit down South,
Surrounded by my fans.
The bus dropped me off on Broadway -
Nobody knew my name.
Oh, lord; stuck in Nashville again.

[UPDATED: We've updated language to clarify how long the verse should be. Basically, just write a new verse to the song]

Enter Our “Stuck In Nashville, Again” Lyric Contest and Win Tickets to See John Fogerty at the Ryman Auditorium

John Fogerty will not only be on NPT on Saturday, November 7 at 8:00 p.m., with John Fogerty: Live By Request, he’ll also be at the Ryman Auditorium on November 22, and NPT wants you to be there. We’ve got (2) pairs of tickets to the concert. To enter to win the tickets, we’d like you to imagine that the classic Fogerty-penned Credence Clearwater Revival song “Lodi” is really about Nashville, and then write a <del datetime="2009-11-06T14:40:44+00:00">four-line</del> new verse that fits the melody and ends with the line, “Oh Lord, stuck in Nashville again.”

To enter, budding lyricists must email their entry to tv8@wnpt.net with “Stuck in Nashville” in the subject line.

Entries will be accepted beginning on Monday, November 2 through 5:00 p.m. November 13. Winners will be notified on November 15 on how to get their tickets. Winning entries, and several honorable mentions, will posted here on the NPT Media Upate blog (http://www.npt08.wordpress.com) on Monday, November 15.

Be creative. Put some landmarks in there. Keep it clean. Good luck!

And don’t forget to tune in for John Fogerty: Live By Request on Saturday, November 7 at 8:00 p.m. on NPT. Just like it sounds, Fogerty will be performing live and taking requests from you and other PBS viewers around the nation who call in to the special toll-free number.

So I was reading the latest copy of Rolling Stone magazine, and in typical Jann Wenner = asswipe f

So I was reading the latest copy of Rolling Stone magazine, and in typical Jann Wenner = asswipe fashion, one of their buried deep-within-the-issue interviews was infinitely more informative and entertaining than their cover story (this month, it’s Madonna. Yep, that piece was just about as insightful and awe-inspiring as her last baby-grab trip to Africa). It was an interview with Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead (of all people) that had me riveted.

Yeah, I’m just as surprised as you are.

Anyway, while I can’t stand speed metal, I appreciated Mark Binelli’s article and it got me thinking: who are the real badasses of rock-n-roll these days? Are there any left, or have they simply dissolved into a puddle of watered-down Woodstockesian* folklore? Take a look at the following rock subgenres and you tell me if you think the following candidates are Badass or Asswipe:

Heavy Metal

Lemmy Kilmister of Motörhead and Ozzy Osbourne

      vs

The amazing thing about these two (who are good friends for real) is not just what they contributed to heavy metal, but the fact that they’re even still alive. Although admittedly on different sides of the spectrum. Lemmy has been living long and hard, still drinking a bottle of Jack a day, smoking a couple of packs a day, and living in a run-down flat in Hollywood – picked for its close proximity to his favorite bar. He still tours a good chunk of every year and dresses in the same black uniform he’s been wearing since the Seventies.

Ozzy Osbourne still tours, albeit not very often, and is a walking billboard for the “Just Say No to Drugs” campaign. If you’ve ever seen his family reality show, you know Ozzy is a shell of his former badass self as a result of drugs and alcohol. It certainly ain’t pretty. But I’ll tell ya this: while Ozzy is no longer a badass in the classic rock n roll sense, I admire his marriage to manager Sharon, and his devotion to his family. Lemmy’s never been married and has a couple of kids he didn’t bother to raise – claiming human relationships are just too much work. True, but Jesus Christ Almighty, that still sucks balls for your kids.

Since both exhibit deep-seeded Badass and Asswipe qualities, I’m declaring this one:

Badass or Asswipe? = Tie

They’re Both Badass for completely different reasons (although I think Lemmy’s an Asswipe for not even trying to raise his boys)

Southern Rock

Gregg Allmann of The Allmann Brothers vs. John Fogerty of Creedence Clearwater Revival.

  vs.

When the music press called Gregg Allmann’s brand of music Southern rock, he said that was a redundant term, like calling music “Rock rock.” He has a point, but there’s no denying that the rock and roll thrown into this category has a certain sound which just makes it Badass Southern rock. It’s like pornography – you may not be able to define what makes it, but damn it, you know it when you see it.

Gregg Allman was one of the original Badasses, period – making great music and living on the edge between rock god and parody for many years. We can even forgive his brief marriage (which – dear God! – actually resulted in a record) to Cher. I personally blame all trangressions with Cher on the Seventies because no one can think clearly with that much drugs around. Anyway, he eventually kicked the Cher and heroin habits respectively, and still tours most of the year.

John Fogerty’s another story altogether. After his work with Creedence Clearwater Revival, his next major hit was Centerfield, a chart-topping success in 1985. On tour in 1986, however, Fogerty suffered complaints over his steadfast refusal to play Creedence songs live and “suffered” with recurring vocal problems which he blamed on having to testify in court. Yeah, that was the problem, Asswipe. Fogerty’s explanation for not playing CCR songs was that he would have had to pay performance royalties to copyright holder Saul Zaentz—and that it was “too painful” to revisit the music of his past.

On February 19, 1987, at the Palomino Club in Los Angeles, Fogerty broke his self-imposed 1972 ban on performing his CCR hits, on an admonition from Asswipe Interventionists, Bob Dylan and George Harrison that “if you don’t, the whole world’s gonna think ‘Proud Mary’ is Tina Turner’s song.” At a Fourth of July benefit for Vietnam veterans, Fogerty finally ran through the list of Creedence hits—beginning with “Born on the Bayou” and ending with “Proud Mary”—to an ecstatic audience. He retreated from music again in the late 1980s but returned in 1997 with the Grammy-winning, Blue Moon Swamp. John Fogerty still tours frequently and plays CCR tunes alongside material from his newer albums.

That said, he basically denied his audience much of the music they loved him for, and while there’s no denying he got screwed with the whole royalties/copyright deal, that’s no reason to be an asswipe to the fans who got you there.

Badass or Asswipe? Allmann = Badass Fogerty = Asswipe.

Arena Rock

Steve Perry of Journey vs. Dennis DeYoung of Styx

vs.

Personally, I think they may as well label this subgenre Classic 80s Rock, because most of the bands always cited in this category had their heyday during that time. And you can’t have power-belting, special effects driven, middle of the road songwriting, Arena/80s rock without citing Steve Perry from Journey. There’s no other voice like his in the genre, and while that substitute Fillipino guy comes awfully close, it’s just not the same. And too bad for the other guys in Journey that he’s irreplaceable because Steve Perry is a major pain in the ass.

Starting off as a progressive rock group in San Francisco, Journey didn’t really go anywhere musically until they recruited Perry and while the founding members of the band were certainly grateful for the play, Perry always claims in interviews that they always resented him for the direction he took the band, especially with power ballad hits like “Open Arms,” “Faithfully,” and “Send Her My Love.” Who knows, right? Anyway, it got so bad that Perry and his girlfriend used to ride a separate tour bus, supposedly for privacy, but the band felt he was further distancing himself – and when Perry’s solo album became a chart-topper, the divide was too great, and they all took a break from one another.

Until about a decade or so later, when 80s rock was making a huge comeback in the summer tour circuits – and the band members wanted to jump on that money train while the tickets were selling. Perry made a record with the band and agreed to go on tour after he had hip surgery. Well, he kept blowing off his surgical date, putting off the others’ plans – to the point when the remaining members fired him and went on tour with their first Perry replacement (can’t recall his name) and now with Arnel Pineda (that’s the You Tube-discovered, Filipino dude). Who knows why Perry kept them waiting, but suffice it to say in subsequent interviews, he viewed the firing as the ultimate betrayal. Yeah, yeah, wa-wa…

Dennis DeYoung’s another piece of work. Starting off as a rock band with a heavier edge, DeYoung took the band in a more theatrical direction in the early 80s with their concept album, Paradise Theater. It was a huge, multi-platimun hit and the band followed DeYoung’s lead with their next project, Kilroy was Here (1983), another, more fully-realized concept album, embracing what other music critics would call a rock opera format, but one I just label “DeYoung’s getting freaky on us.”

Set in a future where performing and playing recorded rock music has been outlawed due to the efforts of a charismatic evangelist, the record featured Dennis DeYoung in the part of Kilroy, an unjustly imprisoned rock star. Tommy Shaw played the part of Jonathan Chance, a younger rocker who fights for Kilroy’s freedom and the lifting of the ban on rock music. This future society is served by robots. Called Robotos, these automatons perform many jobs, not the least of which are as Kilroy’s prison guards.

Part of the impetus for the Kilroy story was the band’s reaction to accusations of including backwards satanic messages embedded in their prior releases. Its introduction intentionally included a backward message, the Latin phrases, “annuit coeptis” and “novus ordo seclorum,” from the reverse side of the US Seal. Referring to the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776, these are translated, “Annuit cœptis – He (God) favors our undertakings, and Novus ordo seclorum – A new order of the ages.”

In 1983, the band mounted an ambitious stage show in support of Kilroy featuring theatrical presentations of several songs. The elaborate show was expensive to produce and was not as profitable as previous tours – and while I get where the story comes from and admire DeYoung pushing back on the Christian Right, the whole thing just got stupid. Plus, there was, as I call it, the Spinal Tap factor…where sets meant to impress end up looking completely ridiculous. The other founding members and Tommy Shaw wanted to return to rock music and thought DeYoung was better off on Broadway with Liza than on tour with Styx. Hence, another rock and roll creative marriage bites the dust. Oh and by and by, DeYoung did end up doing a bunch of New York theater shows (as creative director) and some in Vegas too.

So, who’s the Badass and who’s the Asswipe? = Tie

They’re Both Asswipes.

* yes, I made that up. Wikipedia that motherfuckers.

Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) – one of my all time favorite bands, with unforgotten evergreens such as “Bad Moon Rising“, “Proud Mary” and many others. A good reason to dedicate today to the CCR mastermind – John Fogerty.

As always, I recommend to read the related Wikipedia article and from there you even get more information (if you are interested) if you follow various provided links to his website and other resources with further articles and interviews.

John Fogerty was an important influence on my development as a musician. His guitar style is somewhere in between Rock’n'Roll, Blues and Country, but actually not really one of it… he has his own John Fogerty signature style, a great feel for melody and he is only playing what the song really needs. Also his voice is awesome. It sounds kind of high and a bit shrill, but cool at the same time. In the meanwhile he became already 64, but he still sounds young and powerful, actually even better and more mature as in earlier years. In fact, he has a good singing technique and he is fit – he was saying in an interview that runs every day (if he can) 6 miles.

However, what I really admire, is his ability to write amazing songs (that once heard never leave your ear for the rest of your life) with just three chords and with very simple earthy lyrics. Songs like “Bad Moon Rising” still sound fresh after almost 40 years.Actually it is one of those songs that every musician on the planet can play without rehearsal… no doubt, John Fogerty is, besides the Beatles and the Rolling Stones, the most important songwriter of rock standards.

Besides his old songs, he has furthermore some awesome new ones. If you ever have the chance, check out the album “Blue Moon Swamp“. It is a must if you like nice guitars music – and the mix of Bob Clearmountain (my favorite all time sound engineer) is a masterpiece anyway.

Well, in the video below you see “Rambunctious Boy” from the Blue Moon Swamp album played in a kind of living room unplugged jam of John Fogerty and country rock superstar Keith Urban. These two guys are really cool and amazingly grooving with their two acoustic guitars and two great voices – I am a fan of both

Putting up a couple songs because I can’t go without doing something. I’ll write something up later when I’m more coherent and ambitious. I want to try and get out of the cycle of writing in the wee hours of the morning. So as I tried sleep my silly brain came up with this.

I have only 2 sacred cows when it comes to music. One is Queen. No one should ever be allowed to cover a Queen song. Freddie Mercury was just too perfect a vocalist, a performer and a personality. I’ve only been moved by a select few performers deaths. Those being Jim Henson, Sammy Davis Jr, George Harrison, Mr Hooper from Sesame Street, and Freddie Mercury. Freddie died back in the day when huge special event concerts like Live AID where broadcast on regular television or at least if on cable then everyone had access to it because certain things were important back then it seemed without it being just a giant commercial. I watched as much of the Freddie Mercury Tribute concert I could which I think was all of it. There was so much love in that arena that day you could feel it emanating from the screen. The closest I think anyone ever came to channeling Freddie that day was George Michael. After his performance there were rumours for months that he was going to be asked to join Queen. Maybe if he had he could have avoided some of his later unfortunances. Unfortunately that never happened but we will always have this.

Can anybody find me somebody to love?
Each morning I get up I die a little
Can barely stand on my feet
Take a look in the mirror and cry
Lord what you’re doing to me
I have spent all my years in believing you
But I just can’t get no relief, Lord!
Somebody, somebody
Can anybody find me somebody to love?

I work hard every day of my life
I work till I ache my bones
At the end I take home my hard earned pay all on my own -
I get down on my knees
And I start to pray
Till the tears run down from my eyes
Lord – somebody – somebody
Can anybody find me – somebody to love?

(He works hard)

Everyday – I try and I try and I try -
But everybody wants to put me down
They say I’m goin’ crazy
They say I got a lot of water in my brain
Got no common sense
I got nobody left to believe
Yeah – yeah yeah yeah

Oh Lord
Somebody – somebody
Can anybody find me somebody to love?

Got no feel, I got no rhythm
I just keep losing my beat
I’m ok, I’m alright
Ain’t gonna face no defeat
I just gotta get out of this prison cell
Someday I’m gonna be free, Lord!

Find me somebody to love
Can anybody find me somebody to love?

My other sacred cow is John Fogerty. He had a concert here this past June but I didn’t get to see him because no one else I knew wanted to go. I haven’t gone to a concert or any other kind of special event in 4 years. John Fogerty is one of my 3 must see concert experiences. The other ones are Rob Zombie and Robbie Williams. I’ll have to see if that special he did for his “Premonition” live album is available somewhere. I discovered John Fogerty and Creedence Clearwater Revival watching Hanna-Barbera cartoons on Sunday mornings. To fill in time between things like Laff-a-lympics and The Flinstones and Yogi Bear there were little music videos with CCR songs using clips from H-B shows. There’s a reason why CCR songs sound the way they do and it’s all because of John Fogerty. The man knows how to write and perform a song that just speaks to everyone and gets strips it down the barest of essentials. A while ago I heard what I think was a U2 cover of “Fortunate Son” and it sounded absolutely wrong. “Fortunate Son” is a protest song and should sound like it’s coming from a raw, pure place. Then my friend, Bret, introduced me to the Dropkick Murphys’ version of Fortunate Son. Well holy poo! It’s one of the best covers of any song I have ever had the pleasure of listening to because it realizes what kind of song they are performing so I just have to share it with y’all.

Some folks are born made to wave the flag,
Ooh, theyre red, white and blue.
And when the band plays hail to the chief,
Ooh, they point the cannon at you, lord,

It aint me, it aint me, I aint no senators son, son.
It aint me, it aint me; I aint no fortunate one, no,

Yeah!
Some folks are born silver spoon in hand,
Lord, dont they help themselves, oh.
But when the taxman comes to the door,
Lord, the house looks like a rummage sale, yes,

It aint me, it aint me, I aint no millionaires son, no.
It aint me, it aint me; I aint no fortunate one, no.

Some folks inherit star spangled eyes,
Ooh, they send you down to war, lord,
And when you ask them, how much should we give?
Ooh, they only answer more! more! more! yoh,

It aint me, it aint me, I aint no military son, son.
It aint me, it aint me; I aint no fortunate one, one.

It aint me, it aint me, I aint no fortunate one, no no no,
It aint me, it aint me, I aint no fortunate son, no no no,
