In the nineteen-seventies one of the greatest male musical duos emerged as England Dan and John Ford Coley, who at their peak released eleven albums and nine hit singles. They started out as best friends in school and became successful musical partners from about 1965 to 1985.

After that time each of them went on to pursue solo careers; England Dan would change his stage name back to Dan Seals and John would go on to become an actor, director, producer and songwriter. Dan Seals succumbed to lymphoma just four years ago but will be remembered for the beautiful harmonies that he and John Ford Coley would create on records and during live performances, each being masterfully skilled musicians.

LIVE AT CORBETT THEATER
January 26th 2013

On a cold, typically rainy night in the northwest in a small community known as Centralia Washington, Centralia College hosted a rare appearance of John Ford Coley who would take the audience not only on an excursion into the past, but on to new heights, new songs and a side of John that few may have been aware that he possesses. A polished, though laid-back entertainer who held his audience with a sense of humor and an adept delivery of well-written stories John had the audience laughing, crying and even participating with the line “ I’m not talkin’ bout movin’ in…and I don’t wanna change your life “. He made a special delivery of a song called Choose Life, prefacing it with “ maybe someone will record it someday “. It was a song that really reminded this writer about the value of life and why we should appreciate what time we have here on earth.

At the end of the concert I was able to meet with Mr. Coley, thanking him for his performance and to express particular appreciation for “ Choose Life “, telling him that I felt that it was straight from his heart, making a direct hit into my own core. He was moved by our short chat and my comments but I suspect I will remember our brief encounter far longer than will he, due to his constant and intense touring schedule and meeting fans on every shore.John Ford Coley is also the author of a brand new book called “ Back Stage Pass “ which is filled with first-hand accounts of his life on the road, which has spanned nearly five decades. He told us it was his own “ unauthorized autobiography “. If you are a fan or someone who is new to John Ford Coley, we highly recommend obtaining tickets to see him live in concert, download some of his music and purchase the new book! The best music performance I’ve seen in over a year, John Ford Coley receives two thumbs all the way up!

England Dan & John Ford Coley were a music group in the 1970s. They are known for their hit song

England Dan & John Ford Coley were a music group in the 1970s. They are known for their hit song “I’d Really Love to See You Tonight.”

In the song, Dan & John are real coy with their intentions when they call up a woman, claiming they’d be all right with just watching tv with them. But that long hair and mustache tell you otherwise, ladies. They’re coming over to get it on.

When my son or daughter asks me what the 1970s were like, I’ll simply show them a picture of the England Dan & John Ford Coley album above. Seems accurate.

Another day is coming to an end and I am reflecting back on the day’s events.

The picnic was beyond words. Being with you as always gives me hope for a brighter future. I draw from your strength and love. Yet I am filled with sadness that I am alone with only my thoughts at the end of a delightful day.

I long for more of you my love……….

On his sassy blog, Dave X Robb explores topics as wildly diverse as pop music, grammar, gay sex, and grilled cheese, yet his growing collection of essays achieves a bizarre cohesiveness. He’s doing what we most love to see a blogger do well: tell his story through his own quirky combination of perspectives.

Here’s an example: Robb recently posted a witty little bit appropriately titled, Not much, how about you? in which he confessed, ” I decided to write about something that doesn’t matter at all” but instead managed to note a grammatical quirk in a set of song titles, offend a semi-famous pop star, and subsequently attract his personal best number of blog readers. That’s what I call a Sexy Grammarian.

And did I mention, he’s hot? And single? That he’s a massage therapist? Rocked NaNoWriMo last year? Always offers sexy trade pics in all his online profiles?

This week, in the name of all that is sexy and grammatically correct in the world, go taste a grilled-cheesy nibble of his thoughtful essays and silly ideas and tell him what you think by commenting, punching a like button, subscribing, or telling your friends on Facebook and Twitter about him. And thanks for celebrating Sexy Grammar Week with us!

What is Sexy Grammar?

It’s the fun way we present writing tools and grammar guidelines. But it’s also a philosophy—that writing and art satisfy a human urge to create, not unlike sex. Sexy Grammar is about letting your inner writer be sexy—aroused, engaged, and unapologetic. When you do that, your writing gets sexy, and that attracts readers. You can get Private Sexy Grammar Lessons here.

What is Sexy Grammar Week?

We conceived Sexy Grammar Week three years ago when we noted March 3rd as America’s Sexuality Day and March 4th as National Grammar Day. Then we established a flirtatious Sexy Grammar Week tradition: we crown honorary Sexy Grammarians and glorify them here on the blog. This year we’re targeting bloggers who really put out, like Dave X Robb.

There are some who would say picking the three best songs by [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]England Dan and John Ford Coley[/lastfm] is a bit of an oxymoron. But everybody has their best and, since I actually like their music, I’m just the guy to name them.

#3: “We’ll Never Have to Say Goodbye Again”: Written by Jeff Comanor and released on their 1978 album Some Things Don’t Come Easy, there are few pop songs from the late ’70s that define the sound of the era as well as this one: light, easy, singable, like having [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]David Gates [/lastfm]and [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Rupert Holmes[/lastfm] in a pop music death match. There’s something to be said for that.

Pretty soulful background singers, don’t you think?

#2: “Gone Too Far”: How is this one any different than “We’ll Never Have to Say Goodbye Again”? It’s not. But it does have an electric guitar.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LE-HBs0y950

#1: “Love Is the Answer”: In The Billboard Book of #1 Adult Contemporary Hits, Dan Seals is quoted as saying: “Of all the songs we released as singles, that was my favorite. The song first of all had a classical base, and the middle had a gospel section which I loved.”

I like the soprano sax and the fact that ED&JFC made a hit out of a [lastfm link_type="artist_info"]Todd Rundgren[/lastfm] song.

Another song to support my contention that 1979 was the best year in modern popular music – when the arcs of several genres of music intersected, resulting in a dizzying selection of classics. Punk, new wave, and alternative rock were rising; disco and soft rock were descending; R&B, country, and rock were as strong as ever. In 1979, England Dan (born Dan Seals) and John Ford Coley (born John Colley) were seeing the sunset of their career as a duo, but they saved this gem for their last Top 10 hit. Following their break-up in 1980, Seals went on to launch a very successful solo career as a country artist, resulting in eleven #1 hits. He died last year due to complications from his fight against cancer. Coley kept his stage name, formed a short-lived band in the 80′s, then went on to act briefly and support several acts as a session musician. He’s authored a couple books and is currently touring as a solo act.
