Old Hollywood siren Veronica Lake was known for many things — her smouldering screen presence, pin-up model career and rebellious reputation — but one trait that continues to live on is her trademark peek-a-boo hairstyle. This sophisticated and flirtatious look of cascading waves and a deep side part has experienced a resurgence with actresses Amanda Seyfried, Megan Fox and Blake Lively all wearing the style on the red carpet recently. If you want to bring out your inner femme fatale for your next night out, then use the following tips from Alain Larivee, John Frieda Creative Consultant.

Veronica Lake's Iconic Look

1. Prep wet hair with John Frieda Luxurious Volume Always Stylish Gel-Creme for maximum coverage, ideal style-ability and major volume.

2. Brush hair to remove any tangles and then wrap hair around magnetic rollers taking care to place them in the direction you want your hair to ultimately fall. Allow hair to dry thoroughly.

3. Once your hair is dry unwind it from around rollers and carefully brush through.

4. Finish with John Frieda Frizz-Ease 100% Shine Glossing Mist to achieve a glistening finish and John Frieda Moisture Barrier Firm-Hold Hairspray to hold your finished look.

Looking back at old photos of myself throughout my younger years, there is one glaring flaw that kep

Looking back at old photos of myself throughout my younger years, there is one glaring flaw that kept me from looking as put together and pretty as I would have liked: I had bad hair. There were never any crazy styles or anything; my hair has, for the most part, been of medium length, and I spent the majority of my childhood with a bob, or whatever a bob becomes when it grows out a bit. In my teens I would occasionally go to my hair dresser with a picture of a pixie cut and instruct her to lop off all but a couple of inches, but I never had a hot pink Mohawk or crazy big hair or a bad perm or anything like that.

No, the problem wasn’t the style, it was the lack of style that the previous paragraph clearly indicated. My hair was always just there, a separate entity, not a part of my overall outfit or look. I did practically nothing to take care of it. I’d get it cut every now and then. I washed it and combed it and let it dry. Eventually I cared so little about my hair that I would let pretty much anyone cut it. Friends who wanted to practice their hairdressing skills would snip and style it. I figured a free haircut was worth the risk of a bad haircut. What did I care?

Somewhere along the line I started caring. Tired of never being completely pulled together, I wandered into a Rite Aid one day and bought a bottle of John Frieda Daily Nourishment Leave-In Conditioning Spray. It was on sale and seemed about as low maintenance as a hair product could be. I went home, took a shower, sprayed some of the frizz fighting potion in my hair, and went about my day. Hours later, I looked in the mirror and noticed that my hair looked… good. What had formerly been a kinda wavy, slightly frizzy mop was a soft and shiny, still wavy, head of hair. I was hooked.

But fighting frizz was only part of the battle. You see, my hair is very dark, very thick, and very prone to a condition that I call triangle head, where, upon reaching a certain length, my hair ceases to increase in length and instead increases in width, giving my whole head a very triangular look. Suddenly giving a damn about my hair, I resolved to get a real hair cut and start getting them on a regular basis.

The cut I chose was not earth shattering, but it worked. A trim, some subtle layers and a blow-dry later, and I was actually feeling pretty. My hair actually looked like it belonged on my head!

Since that day I’ve been getting my hair trimmed and restyled regularly, and I won’t leave the house without blow-drying my hair. It adds that bit of polish and style that my hair was definitely missing in my younger days. And I’ve graduated from the John Frieda spray to some fancier frizz fighters. Until about a week ago I was hooked on Frederic Fekkai Glossing Cream, which protects hair from heat damage, keeps frizz at bay, and leaves hair nice and shiny. Lately I’ve been using Living Proof Styling Cream, part of the brand’s no frizz line. The new product keeps my hair almost completely frizz free and also makes it incredibly soft, but it lacks the shine that the Glossing Cream provides. I still have bad hair days, but simply putting a little effort into my hairdo makes me feel a lot better about it, and sometimes I actually feel proud of it.

One night while out having drinks at my favorite bar, a girl I barely knew came up to me and said,

“Your hair always looks perfect. I hate you.”

I couldn’t help but smile.

Evening readers, and welcome to my monthly cocktail of filth and stories about the inside of d-lister’s noses. I’m sure there’s no incriminating white fluff up there, girl who won Pop Idol in 2005 etc etc.

Anyways, it struck me as odd that I’ve literally never seen a celebrity doing normal stuff like shopping and drinking meal replacement shakes, even though I hang out all over London like a lost urchin with a curly mullet. So, I decided to ask some other people to email me with what they’ve seen celebrities doing, and I think I have done better than NOW magazine (seriously, the best they had last week was two BB6 people or something shopping for sausage rolls at Greggs. Guffaw.)

Dear Hannah,

John Frieda was giving bowl cuts to kids on my ruff lundun estate and insuring them that they look just like Ziggy/Zammo, just sans the frizz…All the working class kitchen sink grit of his Polish ancestry shines through…NO. I tried to just say no but free haircuts only happen twice: once from publicity-hungry celebrities and the other in the Army. I’m too young to die, so I chose the ‘accept offer from Sheer Blonde creator’ option. I am going to be called soft forever, but thats ok because I work at B&Q and my sister’s bastard son was box 16 on Deal or No Deal once…so I must be straight.

Bands I’ve seen – Jul 09 – o2 wireless festival, london; featured great performances from Kanye West (electriying even solo) and the Noisettes among many others. Fun day out, got plenty of freebies and had Domino’s from a van…

Autographs. They are the lifeblood of super fans everywhere. And most will do anything to get a big star’s signature on whatever they can from a picture to a jersey to a ball to a boob. But in this never-ending quest to build a Hall of Fame-worthy collection, super fans, at times, get caught up in the chase and thereby overlook the level of fame of the person signing their collectible. One can only imagine the embarrassment they feel when, upon returning home to show off their newest addition, someone asks, “Who exactly is Dirk Wingate?” and they have absolutely no idea. A no-name signature not only diminishes the value of their collection, it can also seriously damage their reputation. Thankfully, by simply observing a few key points, one can easily distinguish a major league from a minor league ball player – and never again get the wrong autograph.

The first thing to take note of, and one of the most visible differences between the two groups, is appearance. Major league salaries are well documented. And so are the egos – and vanity – that come with the substantial salary. As such, big leaguers will be the ones with the perfectly coiffed hair. And, though it may not appear that way, every hair on their head is in just the right place. (They’re also a very good chance that they’ll have frosted tips.)

A minor leaguer, on the other hand, will have a rather shaggy do. Most likely some version of a mullet or a crew cut as their pay scale means a local barber will be doing the cutting, not some famous John Frieda-type.

As for facial hair, five o’clock shadow is the favoured look of most ball players. The difference being, big leaguers do it purposefully, and are well groomed, while minor leaguers just don’t shave as much.

While on the subject of appearance we must, of course, discuss clothing. Referring back to the aforementioned salary, big league players dress like they’re straight out of a fashion ad. From a Saville Row suit to a pair of $700 pants to a muscle hugging v-neck t-shirt, every piece of clothing in their wardrobe is stylist approved.

A pair of faded blue jeans, sneakers or cowboy boots and an old novelty t-shirt are immediate signs of a minor leaguer. Every now and then they may throw on a suit jacket, but they’re still easily identifiable by the jacket’s leather or corduroy elbow patches. This is in no way a knock on their classic all-American style. It is simply a sign that they don’t yet have the money to hire someone to dress them.

The final appearance-related item to look out for is jewelry. And this all comes down to one thing: diamonds. A major leaguer will be easy to spot, as they’ll be the one “blinged-out” from head-to-toe in baseball sized rocks – most of which will be part of a diamond-encrusted cross. Minor leaguers may also sport a cross, but theirs will be a simple gold version. You might also spot them in a hoop or stud earring, a Livestrong braclet and a high school or college class ring.

Moving on we’ll take a look at the player’s lifestyle and how, when spotted out on the town, you’ll know who to offer a pen to.

If they arrive at their destination on foot and are waiting in line, they’re not yet collection material. If they’re dropped off in a Maybach, Phantom or other high-end car and make a move to bypass the line, get your pen out.

Inside the club, if they’re drinking Jack Daniels with a beer back, save your ink. If they’re surrounded by an entourage and have members of said entourage fetching bottles of Grey Goose or Veuve Clicquot, keep your eyes open for when they make a break for the restroom and have your pen ready when they exit.

Another key indicator is the woman they’re with (or, in some cases, women). An abundance of exposed skin, augmented breasts, a fake tan, and a lack of conversation define the woman you’ll find with a major leaguer. (Note: this only happens on road trips. In their home town, you’ll spot a trophy that has recently been plucked from a Miss America pageant.) A well but respectfully-dressed down-home beauty with a sharp wit and taste for gin will be seen on the arm of a minor leaguer all season long as these players need someone to keep them company on the long road trips – plus, they can’t afford the high-class escorts the big leaguers favour while on the road.

During the off-season, the hunt for the next big name autograph doesn’t end. But where the hunt takes place does. For instance, to find a big leaguer, you’ll have to find yourself in the world’s most exotic locations. If that’s not in the plans, don’t fret, spring training and joys of a new season come fast. As for minor leaguers, you’ll know not to ask for an autograph if you they’re stacking towels at the health club where you’re vacationing or delivering you a pizza.

There are many more ways to tell a major league from a minor league baseball player but I believe I have covered the most useful ones. Though if I were to offer one more piece of advice it would be that, when asking for an autograph the player attempts to charge you, he’s a major leaguer, and if he seems surprised to have a pen thrust in his face, he’s a minor leaguer.

(Authors note: Due to recent legal developments, you can be 100% sure you’ve met a major leaguer if they offer you a large quantity of performance enhancing drugs for well below market price.)

Beloved readers, while John Frieda has been an absolute swing-and-a-miss for me as far as styling products are concerned, their conditioners have been spot on!

I was quite impressed by the ingredients in this as well as its potential DC base abilities.

There was quite a large con with this, which I’ll address a bit later.

First, I must address their packaging. Why…why won’t drugstore companies make the outside of their bottles reflect T3h Aw3som3 I want their product to create on my head?

Case in point, Mr.Frieda…this color scheme lacks punch. Pastel, silvery, lavender is gorgeous on certain things (like lingerie) and terrible on others (your bottle). The Font is cute, but you run the line of having a cluttered layout. A bottle with curves is always nice to see in one’s shower. Please, invest in some push-tabs and curvy designs!

The product itself, opaque white and thick as CUSTARD, performs beautifully! It spread, only after a good bit of massaging, due to its thickness which could lead to tangles for some. It also increased the chance of getting this on one’s face, body or in one’s mouth while showering.

This brings me to my major “con” with this product. BUILD UP. I wash daily and even so I was paranoid about forgetting to scrub off the weird filmy feeling it left on my face and body. I double checked before getting out that I didn’t miss any, for fear of break-outs.

BE SO VERY SURE to use a shampoo with cocobetaine (SLS or ALS is not necessary to remove this) WEEKLY, if you use this. A warm water rinse will not remove it alone.

You would think with such great coating abilities detangling would be a breeze. Perhaps for the 3c and up set. 4a ladies and below, if you’re avoiding combing or manipulation…this may not be your friend. It takes a GREAT DEAL of this product to get my 2″ TWA to feel “saturated”. I’m currently not combing and won’t be until I hit the 4″ mark (my fingers are fine for now). However, when I return to my comb collection, it won’t be with this conditioner in hand as a 4a/3c doll myself.

It DOES help your ringlets (if you have any naturally) form nicely and left my hair supple, plump and moist/heavy. If that is what you desire (and again, have a natural curl pattern) this will be fantastic for you, build up aside.

The ingredient quality was well matched to the price $4-7 depending on where you buy it. The Behentrimonium chloride and glycerin so high up (within the first 5 ingredients) made me give this a shot, as seen in the ingredient list below:

Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Glycerin, Behentrimonium Chloride, Cetyl Esters, Cyclopentasiloxane, Simmondsia Chinensis Seed Oil (Jojoba), Tocopheryl Acetate, Malic Acid, Dimethiconol, Polyquaternium 47, Benzyl Alcohol, Methylchloroisothiazolinone, Methylisothiazolinone, Sodium Citrate, Glycine, Fragrance

While I was pleased at the clumping this encouraged (and I use that word ve-e-e-ery loosely, any conditioner that leaves my hair feeling heavy/moist/coated “encourages clumping”) I will not repurchase due to break-out and build up concerns.

Hmmm. I must admit, I’m no fan of Governor Palin and I thoroughly enjoyed watching her make a complete fool of herself during the 2008 Presidential Election. But I’m also no fan of David Letterman’s either. Yes, I think the guy is hilariously funny, smart, witty and has had success in his career for decades because of it but I don’t DVR, TiVo or stay up at night to catch his show. But because of these jokes about Governor Palin and her family, there is a huge calling for his head amongst those that have dangerously misconstrued his words.

The watchfulraven has blogged anti-President Obama postings before and now have joined in to help call a boycott of David Letterman’s advertisers.

~~ This was taken from their blog post dated June 15th ~~

CONFIRMED 6/15: Embassy Suites pulls their ads from CBS.com

Please take a moment to thank them

Update 6/16:

We’re hearing that Hellmann’s/Best Foods (Unilever) is pulling their online ads.

Stay tuned – in the meantime, keep calling and writing to everyone below

***

***

I could care less which political party you affiliate yourself with – since when did it become ok to joke about the rape of a young girl? On behalf of mothers, wives and daughters everywhere, I urge you to boycott David Letterman’s advertisers.

Call and/or email every single person below to denounce their support of this show – Letterman should get his ass fired.

Update: Letterman “apologized” saying the sexually perverted crack was aimed at Palin’s 18 year-old daughter, not the 14 year-old. Really? And he thinks that’s ok?

Is it ok for someone to talk about your mother, wife, daughter, sister or friend this way?

Important Note:

This misogyny has been a long time coming (think of Hillary and Chelsea Clinton); it reached epic proportions in the past few years, and has risen precipitously these past few months. Letterman can indeed say whatever he wants to (as is his right to do so), just as it’s the right of others to object. To remain silent and let this go unchallenged shows that you agree. Left or Right, Liberal or Conservative, there comes a time when one has to say: enough is enough.

***

Dear Late Show Advertisers:

As an advertiser on the David Letterman show, you endorse his point of view; I am appalled that your company supports the rape of young girls.

On June 8th 2009 Mr. Letterman “joked” that a female Governor of the United States is “slutty” and worse still, “joked” about her 14 year-old daughter and statutory rape by an adult baseball player. He continued his slander of this young girl during his June 9th show, likening her to a prostitute.

I refuse to buy products from a company who supports such a vulgar, reprehensible attitude toward women and girls.

Shame on you.

Best Western

UPDATE: Best Western continues to insist that they do not advertise on Letterman. The fact is, Best Western authorized someone to create banner ads and pay for their placement on the CBS.com website; as a result, they are showing up on the Late Show’s pages (I have screen shots of two different ads from multiple days this week). If Best Western is unhappy with the negative publicity, perhaps they should not advertise online via CBS.

The above companies authorized someone (either internally or at an agency) to create banner ads and pay for their placement on the CBS.com website; as a result, they are showing up on the Late Show’s pages. It pays to keep a close eye on where their ads are running .

This is bologna. There’s nothing wrong with adding satire to real events. The real event that cannot be denied is the fact that Bristol Palin is the daughter he’s referring to and she was/is definitely a little fast in the sheets. The jokes about the Obamas had no validity at all but Governor Palin saw nothing wrong with satirical picture on the cover of The New Yorker:

Let’s face it; Bristol Palin was pregnant at 17 years old and this doesn’t make her a whore but when she turns 18 (which she is) she can become subject to these kinds of jokes. Oddly enough, I found the jokes to be more detrimental to the men involved in the joke than she. Does Mr. Letterman deserve to be fired for this though? Hmmm.

You know what Bristol, you’ve got a point there.

This is sort of a review/suggestion entry for today. I’ll start off by saying that I have really curly hair that just loves to frizz out and tangle itself all over the place! For the longest time I was straightening it, but one day I decided to look up some products to try and tame the wild thing I call hair. I came across John Frieda Frizz-Ease collection and decided to try it out. I went out and bought the Curl-Around shampoo and conditioner along with “Dream Curls, curl perfecter” spray. I tried them out and they worked wonders! My hair is no longer wild and frizzy but tamed and sleek. Plus it smells very nice, it’s more subtle than most products (and the spray doesn’t seem to really have a scent to me). I can run my fingers through my hair, which can be a rare thing for curly hair. I’m immensely satisfied with the product and it’s funny because a few people thought I got it done by a stylist Here is an example of what the product line looks like:

John Frieda's Frizz-Ease line for curly and straight hair.

I just thought I would share this product with you. I believe they each cost $10.99 Canadian and can be bought at the local Shoppers Drug Mart, which is where I got mine.

I’m quite happy to leave my hair curly (but not the bangs) after straightening my hair for so long, this is way easier to manage. And as a side note, the Frizz-Ease line also has products for straight hair and everything inbetween.

Na zovele What’s In My Bag? artikelen op andere blogs, besloot ik eens iets anders te doen: What’s In My Shower!

The Body Shop Tea Tree Oil Facial Wash: I love this!

Make a good impression with a clean and deliciously smelling hair using these amazing shampoos and conditioners. Not only do they smell yummy, they’re also great to your hair. Unlike regular perfumes that can dry out your hair because they have too much alcohol.

Guys notice whether you wash your hair or not and they definitely notice oily and smelly hair. My boyfriend is one of those so I know what I’m talking about. I wash my hair every single day so I need only the best shampoos and conditioners (at the best prices) to keep my hair healthy and smelling good. That means I run out of shampoo very often so I’ve tried them all. Here are some of my favorites so far:

This one smells kinda like spearmint and has a tingly clean sensation. The scent in your hair is not as intense as when in the shower but it’s very refreshing and leaves your hair shiny and very healthy.

Herbal Essences Drama Clean Refreshing Shampoo and conditioner (about $4 each)

This one smells awesome! it’s a blend of strawberry and orange. It does what it says, it leaves my hair drama clean and refreshed without drying it at all and gives a healthy shine.

Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Moisture and Shine Shampoo (about $4)

Also from Herbal Essences this great shampoo smells like orchids and coconut. The shampoo alone makes it feel like I don’t even need a conditioner because it’s so moisturizing and the conditioner is super creamy and rich. It leaves my hair extra soft and shiny and super easy to style. This one is guy approved and my boyfriend loves it!

Backstage at Marchesa (this is where I satisfy my ultimate obsession with Georgina Chapman…kno

Backstage at Marchesa (this is where I satisfy my ultimate obsession with Georgina Chapman…knowing I was within the same vicinity as her) I got to speak to Harry Josh, lead stylist for John Frieda. He described a look that was inspired by fantasy themes and was both whimsical and youthful.

There were three looks floating about in the creation of the looks. The first was a low ponytail. The second was a beautiful soft wave with the extreme side part. And the other was very earthy and messy- as if she fell asleep in the forest and awoke with leaves stuck in her hair. Both captured very different versions of a classic textured look and were reflective of the dress.

He used John Frieda’s Root Awakening product line including the Health Boosting Detangling Spray, the ever popular Frizz-Ease, and the Luxurious Volume All Out Hold Spray. John also used lots of powder to get the hair to look textured and loose.

To get the look, Josh did something that I’m contemplating incorporating into my routine. Rather than hold the curling iron vertically, using a one inch iron, he held it horizontally for about 5 seconds and released the hair. He created a deep side part and after about three minutes he brushed the hair after curling. This allows the waves to set- brushing immediately after is counter productive. To get this look, the models needed clean, shiny, healthy hair and he worked with the model’s hair- no extensions, no clip-ons.

NARS makeup artist Talia Shobrook explained that she wanted the makeup to appear young and as if the models were aristocrats going to the woods with these crazy ball gowns. So to achieve this, skin was kept matte.

She started at the center of the face and buffed out. One thing she was careful was not to make the skin look heavy, “…’cuz matte skin can take to look heavy and I wanted that whole kind of naivety. I didn’t want that heavy, matte, blocky skin.” A block of white color was added from the lid to the brow with a dash of brown in the inner corners of her eye. Lashes were curled and Shobrook added volumized mascara “…just one coat and wiggled it” [don't know why but I loved that line...lol]. Eyebrows were messy and the lips had a bit of concealer in the center with NARS Chelsea Girl lip lacquer layered over it.

Wanda Ruiz for CND did nails and this was a custom blend for Marchesa that looked like a silver-y color. It was a natural nail (no press-ons) with a rounded square shape. The look was not too flare-y and was just a hint of color to go with the theme. Wanda described this color as a “new nude”.
