(Universal) Amy Adams, Matthew Goode, John Lithgow, Adam Scott, Kaitlin Olson, Noel O’Donovan, Tony Rohr, Pat Laffan, Alan Devlin, Ian McElhinney, Dominique McElligott, Mark O’Regan, Maggie McCarthy. Directed by Anand Tucker

In life we sometimes find ourselves on a journey from point A to point B. There are times when the destination isn’t the main thing; the trip itself is what defines us.

Anna Brady (Adams) is a driven, focused woman with a firm grasp of what she wants out of life. She has a marvelous eye for detail which serves her well in her profession as an apartment presenter – someone who is hired by realtors to take empty apartments and dress them with furniture and things to give the space as appealing a look as possible.

She has been going with her boyfriend Jeremy (Scott) for four years. He’s a cardiologist who, like Anna, is married to his job and lives with his nose in his Blackberry. The two have decided to try to get an apartment in Boston’s most prestigious building, the spots for which are like gold and guarded with zealous self-righteousness by the building’s board. After their interview with the board, Jeremy tells Anna that he has something he needs to give her at dinner; Anna’s friend Libby (Olson) had spied him coming out of a posh Boston jewelry store. Is this, at last, the night that Jeremy pops the question?

Of course not. She is instead, presented with diamond earrings, marking one of the few times in history a woman is depressed about receiving diamond earrings from her handsome, cardiologist boyfriend. After that, he’s off to a convention in Dublin – or is that a symposium? Convention seems like a rather gauche term for a gathering of cardiologists.

Anna’s drunken ne’er-do-well dad Jack (Lithgow) offhandedly lets drop that in Ireland it is permissible for women to propose to men on Leap Day (February 29) which, as it just so happens, is just a few days hence. Anna boards a plane meant to take her to Dublin. Will she, at last, make it to the Irish capital and propose to her feet-dragging boyfriend?

Of course not. Bad weather diverts the plane to Cardiff, where the same bad weather shuts down the ferry service as well. The closest Anna can get to Dublin is a small village called Dingle, which has a single pub owned by Declan (Goode) who, as Anna finds out when she makes a call, is also the village taxi service. He is at first not willing to drive her to Dublin which he seems to bear some resentment towards, but when a local reminds Declan his kitchen is about to be repossessed and he needs to raise 1,000 Euros within a week, he relents since Anna is offering 500 for the ride. At last, is Anna on her way to Dublin?

Of course not. Stubborn cows, early trains, and bad breaks (or is that bad brakes?) conspire against Anna as the 29th creeps closer and closer. Declan and Anna initially get along about as well as the IRA and the British Army, but soon enough they begin to warm up to each other. Will Anna make it to Dublin in time to propose to her boyfriend…and is he the one she ought to be proposing to?

Writers Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont are well-known “script fixers” in Hollywood and this is their first original script. I say original and yet there is nothing particularly original about it. This is standard romantic comedy fare following typical Hollywood romantic comedy formula; boy meets girl, boy and girl can’t stand each other, boy and girl fall for each other, boy and girl are separated by circumstance or misunderstanding, boy and girl finally realize they need each other and wind up together in the final reel.

The problem here is that there are no surprises. Everything follows the formula down to the letter, never deviating an inch. While Adams is one of the most charming and likable actresses working today, she is given a script which doesn’t utilize her natural abilities much. She comes off as fussy and prissy; it is a tribute to her abilities as an actress that she remains likable in a role which essentially isn’t. Goode is given the standard Irish rogue’s role and does what he can with it, but comes off bland. It isn’t his best work ever, and the movie might well have used it.

The cinematography is simply gorgeous. The movie’s producers wisely chose to shoot in locations not traditionally used in Hollywood, which prove a gorgeous backdrop to the romance. The movie is worth seeing just for the scenery alone. Unfortunately, the script doesn’t measure up to the backdrop.

There are few genuine laughs here and plenty of stock Irish and romantic comedy characters, enough that you have to wonder if the script was not so much written as assembled. There is some charm here, enough that you won’t feel like you have completely wasted your time but this is a movie suffering from a sore excess of Hollywood cliché. The state of romantic comedies in Hollywood is pretty sad; most of them, like Leap Year, follow the stock formula religiously and on those rare occasions where there is some deviation, it is cause for celebration. These days, romantic comedies rely on the likability, charm and chemistry of the leads and if that isn’t there, it’s pretty disastrous. This isn’t quite a catastrophe, but it isn’t a triumph either.

REASONS TO GO: Amy Adams is such a charmer that even with sub-par material she still shines. The area the filmmakers used to film is rarely seen on movie screens and is simply breathtaking.

REASONS TO STAY: Another romantic comedy with a stale, cliché script. There are no real surprises and not a lot of laughs.

FAMILY VALUES: There are some scenes of mild sensuality and a bit of foul language, but suitable for teens and mature tweens.

TRIVIAL PURSUIT: While the village of Dingle is ostensibly on the Eastern shore of Ireland, the Aran Islands where those segments were shot are actually off of the Emerald Isle’s West Coast.

HOME OR THEATER: Some of the Irish vistas look best on a big screen but overall if this isn’t the kind of film that appeals to you there is no reason not to wait til the DVD or cable release.

FINAL RATING: 5/10

TOMORROW: What Just Happened

Some of you might remember that last month I posted my guesses toward the SAG Awards, and the awards

Some of you might remember that last month I posted my guesses toward the SAG Awards, and the awards were last night, and holy cow was I way off. Out of thirteen categories to take wild stabs in the dark from and I only predicted one accurately. Let’s take a look at the actual winners, shall we?

Male Actor in a Drama, got a call from me for Jon Hamm, who’s been snubbed for his Mad Men character for years now. The award went to Michael C. Hall, for his role as the lead on Dexter. Far be it from my non-TV-watching ass to speak-wise one way or another, but Hamm’s been robbed.

Female Actor in a Drama was where I got it right – the award did in fact go to Julianna Marguiles, for her role as a lawyer in The Good Wife. This ends my esteem as a television analyst, but will embolden me to make future predictions as well. Stay tuned for next year’s Nobel Prizes!

Ensemble in a Drama I had called for Dexter. Turns out the Screen Actor’s Guild have different ideas than me and gave it to Mad Men. Clearly they got my article confused and went backwards on this award with the Best Male Actor in a Drama. If only they’d read closer.

Female Actor in a Comedy went to Tina Fey, again, and not to my prediction of Christina Applegate. So much for those soft-hearted, liberal guild members, the callous a-holes. Anyway, congratulations, Tina!

Male Actor in a Comedy did not go to Tony Shaloub, despite that his USA Network show, Monk, will no longer be eligible for an award, considering it ran its series finale. Perhaps there are too many OCD patients in the guild who didn’t find the show and/or the performance particularly humorous. The award, like usual, went to Alec Baldwin. Maybe it’s that the guild’s afraid of change or that Baldwin will call them all “rude, thoughtless pigs?”

Ensemble in a Comedy I had thought would go to 30 Rock, to keep with tradition, and because I didn’t believe Fey and Baldwin would get it AGAIN for the love of Pete! Anyway, the award went to Glee, which I hear is funny, but couldn’t bring myself to watch despite already watching SYTYCD before it came on Wednesday.

Male Actor in a TV Movie/Miniseries was one of the biggest stab in the dark I had to offer. I seriously didn’t know. I was hoping Tom Wilkinson, because he’s awesome and had been snubbed before. It went to Kevin Bacon. At least with John Lithgow at the awards they could have had a Footloose reunion. But they didn’t. Way to drop the ball, SAG.

Female Actor in a TV Movie/Miniseries was the other big wild shoulder shrug. I’d guessed Sigourney Weaver, mostly because I like spelling her name. The award went to Drew Barrymore, continuing that Barrymore tradition of disappointing other people at awards shows.

Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture went to Christop Waltz of Inglorious Basterds, which I have mixed feelings about. Waltz won best actor at Cannes, all of which is disconcerting considering he played a Nazi even Goebels would have thought had gone too far. This is also disappointing because Christopher Plummer, who I predicted, is as awesome as Tom Wilkinson (if not moreso), and deserves an award. There’s also next year (so long as the ticker keeps tocking).

For Female Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture, the guild did go to trend, not giving the award to Vera Farmiga as I’d guessed at, with Mo’Nique taking home the little man. Supposedly (according to the gnomes that live in my head), her award has been slightly revised – instead of the two masks, hers holds two razors.

Male Actor Leading Role in a Motion Picture was undecided for me – either Morgan Freeman or George Clooney were my picks. Apparently the guild prefers to give the awards to movies you’ve never heard of and went with Jeff Bridges for Crazy Heart, which IMDB says is about a country singer who’s had too many wives, too many drinks, and a heart of gold.

Female Actor Leading Role in a Motion Picture I totally thought was going to Meryl Streep. People love her – her rendition of Julia Childs was spot on. Seems that the guild is getting tired of her because the award went to Sandra Bullock for The Blind Side, which has to do about more folks with hearts of gold. Way to play to type, SAG.

Cast in a Motion Picture was the last on our list, which we’d predicted would go to Nine, which I didn’t actually know had been released already. I know, I rock at keeping up with the times. Anyway, the award went to Inglorious Basterds, an absolute win for WWII revisionist history – except, in like, a good way.

There you have it folks, further proof that I have no say in the way other people vote. Stay tuned next time when we inaccurately predict the outcome of the Oscars!

Dexter star Michael C Hall picked up the gong for best actor in a TV drama at the 67th Golden Globe

Dexter star Michael C Hall picked up the gong for best actor in a TV drama at the 67th Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night, for his role as serial killer Dexter Morgan.

It emerged last week that Hall has been battling cancer, Hodgkin’s lymphoma, for several months. He revealed that it has been successfully treated and is in remission but the effects of the treatment were all too clear when he when he appeared on stage to collect his award on Sunday night, wearing a black beanie hat to cover his hair loss.

Season 4 guest star John Lithgow was also honoured with a Best Supporting Actor award for his role as a rival serial killer in the latest season of the show.

Based on characters created for a series of books by Jeff Lindsay, Dexter is an outstanding drama with a rich, vein of dark humour pumping through it. Dexter Morgan is a civilian who works as a blood-spatter analyst with the Miami police department by day and is a serial killer by night. However, his adoptive father, a police officer, spotted Dexter’s dark side at an early age, and trained him to control it, to a degree, and let it loose only on killers who have evaded the law. Season 4 aired in the US before Christmas and work is due to start soon on season 5.

The opening titles are arguably the best of any TV show, past or present. They a real masterclass in clever, imaginative visuals that echo, with a cheeky grin and a knowing wink to the audience, the show’s themes.

They hint at Dexter’s hidden dark side by exposing and highlighting the inherent violence in the apparently benign, innocuous routine of getting dressed in the morning and having breakfast. Great use of sound effects, too, to emphasize the point. The images are perfectly complemented by Rolfe Kent’s wonderful theme tune.

At the start of season 4, due to changes in his personal life, poor Dexter is feeling a little frazzled, which allowed the producers to have a little fun with this funny alternate version of Dexter’s morning routine:

While Dexter will have to settle with being my top TV show for 2009, it’s much deserving star Michael C. Hall won his first Golden Globe last night, along with John Lithgow who snagged his 2nd. Following the twitter stream last night, it looked as though many didn’t know why Hall was sporting his cap last night. For those not in the loop, he’s in remission from battling Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. I’d only found out about it earlier in the afternoon and while sad, it’s great to see he’s recovering. Hall and Lithgow gave tremendous performances this past season on Dexter, vaulting it way past the mess that was season four (sorry Jimmy Smits). Hopefully this marks the beginning of further recognition for the show, which failed to win the award for Best TV Drama (went to MadMen, my 2nd favourite show of the year, for the 3rd year in a row). I can’t wait to see Trinity return for a second season. It’s just too bad that’s so many months away…

Other notable congrats go out to:

I’m a senior in my spring semester of college — which means in lamens terms… I choose binge drinking over a lot of other activities such as watching the Golden Globe’s for instance. I did, however, check feverishly through the red carpet dress line up as well as the nominations and winners on the official website. I will say, some of the winners I am not surprised about, others very much so. I thought I would go through some of the awards and share my thoughts on the thumbs up or the thumbs down.

SHOCKERS:

BEST MOTION PICTURE — MUSICAL OR COMEDY:

THE HANGOVER??? I get it, it was funny. I have seen it time and time again but that shouldn’t have won a GOLDEN GLOBE for god sake. I think 500 Days of Summer should have won, clearly I’m biased — a long time child hood friend directed it, but still!

BEST TELEVISION SERIES — DRAMA:

MAD MEN: While I do like M.M. and I think it is brilliantly written I think the other nominees were just as amazing and to be honest, I think this season of Big Love should’ve won this instead. All of the nominees were solid candidates so I won’t say this one is a total disappointment, however, I love Big Love and feel a bit let down.

BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MUSICAL OR COMEDY:

TONI COLLETTE: UNITED STATES OF TARA: Here’s the thing, Lea Michele on Glee should have won this with her eyes closed I am NOT a happy camper about this — I wanted her to have a breakthrough Golden Globe award to take home at the end of the night. She was unbelievable on Glee and really was the glue to the whole show, so in my eyes, this was a disappointing loss for Lea.

PREDICTABLE WINNERS/ AWARDS I’M HAPPY ABOUT:

BEST PERFORMANCE BY ACTRESS IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES

CHLOE SEVIGNY FOR BIG LOVE: I loved her character’s development this season: she was bitter, controlling, and independent — loved her and her portrayal of the frustrated 3rd wife. I also love how her character cheats on Bill Paxton, he’s boring and is beginning to have erectile issues — I’d be out of there too!

BEST PERFORMANCE BY ACTOR IN A SUPPORTING ROLE IN A SERIES

JOHN LITHGOW FOR DEXTER: yes yes yesss! He was SO creepy and added so much intrigue and depth to Dexter this season. Who knew Lithgow could be so scary?

BEST TELEVISION SERIES — MUSICAL OR COMEDY:

GLEE: BEST AWARD OF THE EVENING in my opinion. What amazing breakout show — it’s refreshing, and brilliant. I love the fact that it doesn’t conform to the “blood sucking trend” and goes for the feel good plot line.

Avatar, James Cameron’s years-in-the-making vision of the possibility of performance-capture technology, was named Best Motion Picture, Drama, at the 67th Annual Golden Globes, triumphing over the seemingly unstoppable Hurt Locker.

Jeff Bridges and Sandra Bullock, winners for Best Actor and Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama, were prepared to do just that.

“Please don’t let Ricky Gervais be right. Do I need to thank whoever bought this for me?” began Bullock, long America’s sweetheart but never a critics’ darling before starring in The Blind Side, referencing one of the host’s opening jokes. “Thank you, Hollywood Foreign Press, after all these years.”

Bridges, too, joked about his sudden ascendance to the upper echelons since playing a washed-up country singer in Crazy Heart.

“You’re really throwing my underappreciated status here,” he mock-complained, before thanking his late dad, Lloyd Bridges, and mom for encouraging their kids to go into show business.

And while the critical favorite, Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow (aka the third Mrs. James Cameron), could still get the Oscar in the divorce, Cameron got the Globe.

“I’m absolutely not well-prepared,” the filmmaker said after claiming his award from next-door neighbor Mel Gibson. “Frankly, I thought Kathryn was going to get this. She richly deserves it.”

The on-again king of the world also thanked his performance-capture troop and visual production facility. “We’re family, guys, whether you like it or not,” he said.

Meanwhile, in another surprise, The Hangover was named Best Musical/Comedy, beating a field that included Nine, which came in with a whopping five nominations but was completely shut out.

Robert Downey Jr., winner for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, gave a shout-out to the mysterious team of journalists who comprise the Globe-giving Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

“Art in the blood is liable to take the strangest forms, said the Sherlock Holmes star, quoting Arthur Conan Doyle. “That is why I would like to thank also, or not thank, the HFP, because they are a strange bunch, and now I’m one of them.”

But we’re mainly glad he won because of this: “Thank who? [Producer] Joel Silver, the guy who’s only restarted my career 12 times since I began 25 years ago? I mean, I really don’t want to thank my wife, because I could be busing tables at the Daily Grill right now if not for her. Jeez, what a gig that’d be.”

Meryl Streep didn’t have to share with Bullock tonight, standing solo on the podium to accept Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Comedy, for channeling Julia Child in Julie & Julia.

And Streep, no matter how many times she gets to go up there, always thinks of something apropos to say.

“I come to Golden Globes weekend and I am really honestly conflicted how to have my happy movie self in the face of everything that I’m aware of in the real world,” she said after humorously informing everyone that she wants to change her name to T-Bone, as in Best Original Song winner Burnett, winner for Crazy Heart’s theme song “The Weary Kind.”

“And I want to say,” Streep continued, “that’s when I hear my mother’s voice, saying, ‘Give some cash to Partners in Health, put the dress on, put on a smile, and be damn grateful that you have the dollars to help and the next day, and the next day…’ ”

Mo’Nique, a comedian who’s left audiences floored by her portrayal of an abusive mom in Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire, heads into the Oscar homestretch with a Globe for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, which tends to be the category most hospitable to breakout performances overall.

“First, let me say, thank you, God, for this amazing ride that you’re allowing me to go on,” she said, ultimately concluding with the pointed message, “I celebrate this award with all the Preciouses and the Marys, with all the people who’ve ever been touched…It’s now time to tell, and it’s OK.”

Also continuing his goosestep waltz toward Oscar was Austrian Christoph Waltz, who’s been the subject of Oscar buzz since Cannes and tonight was a Best Supporting Actor winner for playing Nazi nut Hans Landa in Inglourious Basterds.

Quentin Tarantino, who lost Best Screenplay to Up in the Air scribes Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner, finally had a reason to smile.

Steve Granitz/Getty Images

On the tube side, the Hollywood Foreign Press didn’t waver from their stance that Mad Men is the best TV show ever, awarding the series its second straight Golden Globe for Best TV Series, Drama.

But instead of sticking with 30 Rock, too, the HFP was instead charmed by Fox’s new musical show, Glee, which was named Best TV Series, Comedy.

“‘This show is about a lot of things,” gleeful cocreator Ryan Murphy said. “It’s about the importance of arts education, and this is for anybody and everybody who got a wedgie in high school.”

Very appreciative of Mo’Nique’s message was screen veteran and acceptance-speech newcomer Drew Barrymore, who snagged the Globe for Best Actress in a Miniseries or TV Movie for Grey Gardens.

“I’ve been meeting with the Hollywood Foreign Press for, like, 97 years and I’ve been in this room since I was 7 years old,” the charmingly befuddled and self-deprecating thesp said in appreciation. “I could be Jeff Spicoli’s girlfriend with the lisp and the paralysis, so thank you for taking a chance on me…I have grown up here and I would like to say that this is for all the people nice enough to love me and wish the best for me along the way.”

Other first-time winners despite their incredibly familiar faces include Chloë Sevigny, a Best Supporting Actress winner for Big Love, and Kevin Bacon, Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries or TV Movie for Taking Chance.

Steve Granitz/Getty Images

Another subtle yet poignant Moment was Michael C. Hall’s win for Best Actor in a TV Series, Drama, which comes amid the news that he was simultaneously shooting Dexter’s fourth season and receiving cancer treatment.

“It’s really a hell of a thing to go to work at a place where everyone gives a damn,” a smooth-faced Hall, wearing a black head wrap over his bald pate, said upon accepting his first Globe in four nominations. “This is a dream job, and I am so grateful.”

It was an emotional moment for the whole Dexter clan, including a teary John Lithgow, earlier a winner for Best Supporting Actor in any TV genre whatsoever (there’s only one supporting win per sex at the Globes). He said he had a great time “creeping out America for six months” as the gruesome Trinity Killer.

Showtime reached its own personal best with three statues tonight, including United States of Tara star Toni Collette’s win for Best Actress in a TV Comedy. Though, of course, HBO was the top network with four wins, as tends to be the case.

Julianna Margulies, star of CBS hit The Good Wife, beat out Emmy winner Glenn Close and defending champ Anna Paquin for Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama.

Paul Drinkwater/NBC Universal, Inc via Getty Images

First-time Globe host Ricky Gervais came out firing, with even his introduction being an exercise in comedic timing as the camera swung between him and a stone-faced Steve Carell, who pretended (we assume) to seethe as Gervais reminded everyone that he created The Office. (And urged everyone to pick up the two-season series on DVD. “Quality, not quantity, that’s what counts,” he boasted.)

“All right, I better get on with it before they replace me with Jay Leno,” Gervais quipped.

Whether it was Gervais’ golden touch or not, the Globes’ entire writing staff seemed to have kicked it up a notch this year.

Paul McCartney got two gems in (“Hello, I’m Paul McCartney, or as I’m now known, ‘that guy from Rock Band,’ ” and “Animation is not just for children. It’s also for adults who take drugs”) before presenting the Best Animated Feature Film award to Up, which despite the late buzz surrounding Fantastic Mr. Fox still looks to be the front-runner for Oscar gold in the animated category, if it’s not an overall Best Picture nominee.

“By any measure, a substantial move up,” Tom Hanks described Meryl Streep’s chance to bed Stanley Tucci in Julie & Julia as opposed to Alec Baldwin in It’s Complicated.

In comparing himself and Cecil B. DeMille Award recipient Martin Scorsese to an old married couple,” Robert De Niro explained, “We built a life together. We have great memories. We just don’t sleep together anymore.”

“I’ve collaborated with a lot of people,” Scorsese said during his signaturely rapid-fire acceptance. “Many of them are here tonight, and I want to thank them all—but not individually. That would make this show longer than the Globes and the Oscars put together.”

I did not realize that Michael C. Hall was suffering from Hoskin’s Disease and was surprised when he showed up to the GG awards wearing a stocking cap. Glad that he is in remission and glad that he was able to pick up his reward for this last season of great television in his hit TV series Drama DEXTER.

The show DEXTER is so good on so many points most of all this season for the addition of hollywood show stopper JOHN LITHGOW as the Trinity Killer. Lithgow has not played a serial killer in a long time but he hasn’t lost the knack of just showing up, limited research (leaving it to the show’s writers) and playing the part with gusto. So much enthusiasm it gave his real wife, Mary pause while watching the show with her she would turn to stare at him and exclaim “Just who the hell are you!? ” I found that tale amusing as did Lithgow and quite frankly I always thought great actors were mentally skitzo. Well, they would have to be with all the different roles they play, research, portray, they climb into the suit of another’s life and become that person for a short period of time. Some actors enjoy the roles a bit too much like HOPKINS love of his serial killer character HANNIBAL LECHTER, who chilled most movie goers to the bone with his speech and unspeakable actions towards the good guys in most of those thrillers.

Between John Lithgow and Michael C. Hall last season, Dexter was full of twists and turns only a writer like me can love. From “Oh, it’s you, Daddy” to “Well…Hello Dexter Morgan” – it was a hair raising tour de force in not only action by from the writer’s point of view ending up with the shocking season finale and the death of Dexter’s wife, Rita.

What will happen next in the world of Dexter? We’ll watch this season to see -

Not much time to write a post tonight, but I couldn’t wait to express my satisfaction that bot

Not much time to write a post tonight, but I couldn’t wait to express my satisfaction that both Michael C. Hall and John Lithgow captured Golden Globes for their respective roles last season on Dexter. I’ve written at some length before about the appeal of Dexter and the talent of Hall, and it was great to see Hall finally grab the Globe after three previous nominations.

Lithgow was absolutely brilliant in his role as Dexter’s latest and creepiest nemesis, Arthur Mitchell (a.k.a. The Trinity Killer). It is difficult to convey for people who haven’t seen him on the show just how fantastically twisted he was. Let’s put it this way. Being a serial killer who kills other serial killers, Dexter is no stranger to the dark and dastardly deeds of the criminal underworld. Trinity’s capacity for evil surpassed anything even Dexter could comprehend. Lithgow played the part to perfection. Wearing a disguise of smiles and social platitudes, he lurks in plain sight, revealing himself only to his victims…and to Dexter. He is ruthless beyond our imagination, and so convincing that at times he draws a physical sense of revulsion from the audience.

Considering how desensitized we are to the on-screen blood, gore, sex and violence that is part of our everyday collective consciousness today – it takes a LOT to elicit such a strong response from so many viewers. As one critic noted:

It has been several days since the season-finale of Dexter, and I’m still rattled. Having spoken to quite a few people about it, I’m not the only one. Some have said they actually leaped off their couch in shock. Some have said they had trouble sleeping that night. Personally, I kind of wandered around my house in a daze, as my brain processed what it had just seen. It’s nice to know TV still be that impactful, isn’t it? But my God, what a stunner.

I think it’s only right that both actors take home a Golden Globe – while each was stellar in their individual performance, the cat and mouse, mentor/student, killer/victim interaction all season made the Dexter/Trinity relationship one of the most compelling in recent TV history. The whole was definitely greater than the sum of its parts.

In other news, it was announced this week that Michael C. Hall has been secretly battling cancer, which is now in remission. While I sincerely hope that he is on the mend, I hope that the announcement doesn’t overshadow his well-deserved accolades.

Still can’t wait for next season!!

Kate Langenburg/A&E Groove

What’s my latest guilty pleasure? Well, that’d have to be Dexter, the wonderfully grotesque Showtime drama about a forensics expert who doubles as a serial killer while no one is watching.

I can’t lie to you — because it’s winter, I am going into hibernation mode. While I am camped out in my warm winter den (aka my bedroom), I have spent much time watching the show. But I have merely been catching up…I just started watching it three weeks ago.

The show has been grabbing the attention of some Hollywood related people as well. Today, Michael C. Hall, our loveable serial killer, received a Golden Globe for best actor in a tv drama. Also, John Lithgow was awarded a Golden Globe for best supporting actor in the show.

According to the Associated Press, Lithgow said, “”I’ve had the most wonderful time creeping out the entire country for the last six months.”

Indeed, the show is creepy. Some people may find themselves grossed out, but unable to look away, while others may find the show’s concept utterly disgusting and refuse to watch. I’m in the first category….and looking forward to season 5 of the serial killer everyone loves.
