They met way back in high school
He’s your average guy
She’s the average girl
No one knew he courted her
‘Though some noticed the closeness
‘Til one day people found out…
They broke up
But they remained friends
Sooner than expected
They’re back together
High School ended
But they stayed together ’til college
‘Til one day they parted ways again
He was linked to a new girl
There were guys courting her
But they still ended up looking for each other
Her mom found out about them
She tried to fight for him
But gave up soon
She left him
But time was really on their side
They met again
And gave another shot at destiny
There were fights, even other parties
But they managed to stay together
‘Til one day they finally decided to end everything.
It was almost a decade
He loves her so much
She loves him as well
But she knows something is missing
She’s happy but she wants to be happier
This is the most serious among all the breakups
For this is the only time he gave up
All the while we thought it’ll be…
From High School to Forever
It can still be,
For both are not closing doors
We’re hoping that just like Popoy and Basha
They’ll have One More Chance.

Finally I was able to watch this film!

John Lloyd and Vilma were, as expected, brilliant. I’m a little iffy about Luis though. Whenever he’s on screen, my eyes are drawn to his rather large nose. I tried not to look at it but I just couldn’t stop staring at it! So I wasn’t really able to focus on his acting skills.

Anyways, kudos to Star Cinema for being brave producing a film like this. I hope they produce more films that have new and interesting characters.

A couple of articles caught my eye in Saturday’s Financial Times. First, this piece by Emily Stokes, which sat on the op-ed page right below this one, by John Lloyd. I couldn’t decide whether they appeared together by accident, or if their proximity was meant to be ironic.

Ignoring significant evidence to the contrary, Lloyd claims feminist ’successes’ make Harriet Harman’s rhetoric ‘archaic’. I guess he hasn’t heard about massive pay gaps between men and women, well-documented glass ceilings, and female TV presenters losing their jobs as payback for losing their youth. As for Stokes, she says the only place for women on the political podium is as cheerleaders for their heroic husbands, and not as politicians. ‘Nobody likes a Lady Macbeth’, she concludes.

Sure discrimination in all its forms still exists in most areas of society, but sexism remains the last outpost of socially-acceptable bias. For instance, it’s deemed laughable to claim that attitudes towards risk might have been different if women had occupied more senior positions in the financial sector. Simultaneously, it’s perfectly permissible to exclude women from the serious business of tackling the credit crunch that resulted from the well-documented disregard for risk.

This double-speak is illuminating, exposing the fact that Lloyd’s ‘triumph of the right’ is purely rhetorical where equality is concerned. A lack of meaningful childcare policies is transformed into a personal ‘choice’ women make between careers and family life. ‘Fairness’ means that positive discrimination schemes are deemed to fly in the face of ‘merit’, never mind whether ‘merit’ is the prevailing criterion for advancement. And no female leader – from Queen Victoria to Margaret Thatcher, or from Chile’s Michelle Bachelet to Yuliya Tymoshenko in the Ukraine – has managed to unseat Shakespeare’s ruthless anti-heroine as the prototype for ambitious women.

Does the name Mark Wallington mean anything to you? No, I’m not talking about the former Leicester and Lincoln City goalkeeper but the author and TV screenwriter of the same name.

He’s probably best known for his book 500 mile walkies but there were a few others that made it to TV too including the Missing Postman with James Bolam and Happy Birthday Mr Shakespeare starring Neil Morrissey. The latter, coincidentally, that saw a relationship start between Morrissey and co-star Amanda Holden which reportedly lead to the break-up her marriage to Les Dennis.

Why am I telling you this? Well, I’ve recently been re-reading his book called The Day Job about his life a jobbing gardner in 1980. What will perhaps be interesting to people on here is that his ‘other’ job was as an aspiring comedy writer. It talks about meeting director John Lloyd and Dave Allen and finally getting two sketches on Not the Nine O’clock News. The news comes the day John Lennon was shot.

If you want to read a funny book and get a flavour of someone’s struggle to be recognised in the comedy world I would heartily recommend it. You can even read some of the book online.

Also of interest is that his writing partner at the time was Dick Fiddy, a TV historian who wrote Missing Presumed Wiped: Searching for the Lost Treasures of British Televison.

Failure this bad really deserves its own post. Great Britain lost to Poland, 3-2, a result which puts us into Group II of the Europe/Africa zone. That’s the same group as Hungary, Monaco, Lithuania, and Egypt, whose Davis Cup team is actually made up of mummies.

Not so much.

This really is beyond dismal. Credit to Andy Murray, who showed up injured and fatigued and did his bit, picking up the second of two points by polishing (ha!) off Jerzy Janowicz 63 64 63 to level the tie at 2-2.

But why – why – Dan Evans couldn’t even take a set off a player ranked 376 places beneath him is beyond my comprehension. The British no. 2 lost to Michal Przysiezny 62 61 75 in less than two hours, losing his serve no less than seven times.

From all accounts, the Pole raised his game significantly. But Evans must have played well below his, which is kind of the opposite of what’s supposed to happen in Davis Cup.

Murray has it right:

“I think now, at last, we are where we deserve to be. We clearly are not good enough to be playing against these teams,” Murray said. “With or without me, we are struggling to win matches.

“Everybody who’s involved – and I am one of them – needs to be honest about how we are doing and that we need to get better. This could be the best thing that happens.”

It’s a valid point. I mean, what’s going to happen? Unless something changes, we’ll get back up to Group I of the zone and then just lose all over again.

God. I wanted to rant about the patheticness of this, but I don’t even have the energy. You suck, Great Britain. We suck.

f. all of the above

Key in your answers by typing INMYLIFE space [Letter of your choice] and send to 2366.

What grabbed my attention is his reference to Sir Isaac Newton believing that Jesus came to earth to “operate the levers of gravity”.

Maybe gravity is linked closely with love…or should I say Love….Maybe Love is what holds and draws us to God and one another…maybe Jesus came to increase our capacity to Love, to be attracted, to connect, to be intimate with God and one another…

She surprised us all with her ability to play a character older than she was in her breakthrough soap Kay Tagal Kang Hinintay. From that time on, Bea Alonzo has proven her worth as an actress in such vehicles as Maging Sino Ka Man and the blockbuster movie One More Chance. JobsDB talks to Bea and gets her to spill the secrets of her success.

What to you is the best and worst thing about having a career in showbiz?

The best would be the money. As actors, we get to do a lot of different things and live different lives. Kaya ang dami kong natututunan.

Ang worst siguro yung puyat, at yung nababawasan ang privacy mo.

What is the best career advice you’ve ever received?

I remember something that Tito Ronnie Lazaro asked John Lloyd and me when we were still doing Kay Tagal Kitang Hinintay, our first soap. He asked us: “Hanggang kailan kayo magtatagal sa showbiz?” Tito Ronnie said that it’s really up to us. “Dapat, ang sabihin n’yo, hangga’t gusto n’yo pa. Dahil basta gusto n’yo pa ang ginagawa n’yo, hangga’t mahal n’yo ang trabaho n’yo, may dahilan kayong magpatuloy.” What he meant to say was, when you don’t love what you’re doing anymore, you know that it’s time to stop.
