A personal favorite and the best Rambo of the bunch.

First Blood is about former Green Beret John Rambo returning to the U.S. of A. after serving his tour of duty over in Vietnam. So he’s minding his own business, hitching across the country to visit his old war buddies, when one day he comes across this small town sheriff who starts pushing him for no reason at all. The said sheriff then makes the mistake of trying to put Rambo in jail for disturbing the peace, so Rambo runs into the forest and starts kicking ass in a potato sack all because no one will listen to him.

So, kids, next time you see a war veteran walking down the street, do the right thing and don’t act like a dick. Never a good idea to provoke war vets.

Probably the first point worth noting about First Blood is that it’s not really a Rambo movie, not in the title, not in the meaning, and not in the plot. Well, the characters are always the same, and there’s guns, but that’s about it. This is First Blood, not Rambo: First Blood. Every movie after this consisted of G. I. Johnny getting sent in to some war-torn country, getting captured by the enemy, escaping, grabbing a machine gun with infinite ammo, and then proceeding to kill everyone in sight. While this is awesome in its own right, this does not happen in First Blood, and that’s exactly why I dig this movie.

Even though Rambo messes up guys pretty bad here, people forget that he actually doesn’t kill a single one of them – well, except for one guy that falls out of a helicopter after Rambo throws a rock at it, but we’ll plead self defense on that one and let it slide. Don’t get me wrong, this is an action movie – one of the all-time great action movies at that – but the selling point here is really the movie’s message more than anything else.

The script was ahead of its time in dealing with issues like P.T.S.D. and understanding/misunderstanding what it must be like to try and return to a normal life at home when all you know is war, especially when everyone around you has no idea. Sylvester Stallone actually gives a really awesome speech at the end about this that brings everything full circle and keeps it from being another shoot-em-upper; shit is no joke. His outrageous accent doesn’t really help much, but still, might be some of the best acting of his career.

But Stallone’s acting aside, this is John Rambo we’re talking about here, the ultimate one-man-army that started a revolution of badass action heroes. He doesn’t talk a whole lot and doesn’t have the most magnetic personality, but throw him in the woods with his trusty knife and bandanna and he is good to go. The dude sews up his own wounds after cauterizing them with gun powder. Come on, it doesn’t get much more hardcore than that.

Brian Dennehy is also good as the ignorant sheriff, but this is Stallone’s show and everyone knows it.

Only complaint is that some of the traps Rambo sets up in the woods are outrageously complex and in no way could be whipped up in an hour. But I’ll own up and admit that as one stupid-ass complaint, just being annoyingly nit picky.

If you’ve never seen First Blood, don’t just write it off as mindless drivel. There aren’t too many action movies with as much heart as this and I guarantee you’ll be surprised at how true this sentiment is by the time the end credits roll around. Rambo was awesome, but like I said, it’s no First Blood.

SIDE NOTE:
Along with Snake Plissken, John Rambo was also one of the main inspirations for Big Boss in the Metal Gear Solid games, and if that doesn’t sell it for you fellow nerds out there, then I don’t know what will.

Why is it that every time this no talent ass clown farts out a movie, it makes a gazillion dollars?  Look, I love going to the cineplex for a good, mindless, action movie with lots of stuff blowing up as much as the next guy.  In fact, one of my favorite movie theater experiences of all time was going to see Snakes on a Plane, so you can rest easy knowing I am no movie elitist.  That being said, Michael Bay’s movies are so bad, that even the low budget knock offs of his movies are better than the ones he directs (with the exception of his one non-shit movie, The Rock, which is pretty fucking badass). Actually, come to think of it, it’s one of Nicolas Cage’s only non-shit movies as well…and now I have another person to thin from the herd.  Tough job but someone has to do it.  I digress.

Michael Bay is on the top of my shit list at the moment because his crapfest, Transformers 2, just got released on DVD.  Now we can all relive this two and a half hours of life that we will never get back. I’ll be honest, I hated the first Transformers.  Terrible acting, even worse directing, and during the battle scenes, I couldn’t tell if the Autobots and Decepitcons were fighting or raping one another.  Too much metal on metal loving for me.  So fine, that movie sucked, and I accepted that there would be an equally crappy sequel to follow because that’s the way Hollywood works:  “You keep making us a lot of money, and we’ll keep making your movies” (i.e. Saw).  But fuck me, I don’t think anyone saw the absolute celluloid shit stain that is Tranformers 2 coming.  For the crimes against quality film making, Michael Bay, you are sentenced to be thinned from the herd.

In a world where Michael Bay didn’t exist to substitute explosions for a lack of story in movies:

• Filmmakers given the astronomical budget of a Michael Bay movie, would actually be able to churn out a decent film, instead of wasting all that money on gratuitous explosions:

• The men who died at Pearl Harbor would never have had to turn over in their graves when Bay’s disgraceful depiction of the attack was made.
Sadly, Team America: World Police would never have been made, having no Michael Bay to make fun of.

Megan Fox would’ve stayed an unknown, struggling actress and eventually turned to porn which, come on, is where we all want to see her end up anyway…
• We’d be spared  terrible remakes of fantastic horror films (i.e. Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street)
Slow motion would be used sparingly in films and only when proven to be effective instead of at every, and I mean every, single moment in a Michael Bay movie.

• Music video directors would hopefully realize that some people are destined to only direct music videos, like Bay should’ve done, and Brett Ratner.
• Directors will realize that montages aren’t always awesome, and sometimes, they are downright lazy:

• Never again will a man so obsessed with helicopter shots at sunset exist:

• We would never have been graced with this scene of cinematic brilliance:

I’m a big believer in the idea that some movies are “so bad they’re good,” like the aforementioned Snakes on a Plane and John Rambo.  However, Michael Bay’s catalog of work most certainly falls into the category of being “so bad, they make you want to skin yourself alive and jump into a pool of hydrogen peroxide.”  If Michael Bay had only chosen to become a pizza delivery boy instead of a craptastic filmmaker, I probably wouldn’t hate him as much, and wish death upon him.  Instead, we have Transformers 3 to look forward to…where’s that pool of peroxide?

But one has to have dreams right?

La cuarta entrega del ex-boina verde John Rambo tuvo que esperar 18 años para hacerse realidad. Stallone siguiendo los pasos del éxito obtenido con Rocky Balboa nos trajo esta maravilloso film donde su trama no solo se enfoca en violencia cruda sino que también tiene un mensaje, debido a que el guion se centra en la guerra civil de Birmania poco conocida en el mundo y que  se ha extendido por mas de 60 años, mostrando la dura realidad que viven sus habitantes.

Escrita y dirigida por su actor principal Silvester Stallone, quien  logró recaudar mas de 110 millones de dólares en taquilla, una cifra bastante rentable teniendo en cuenta que se realizó con bajo presupuesto.

John Rambo es una excelente película bélica, que para muchos de nosotros nos sirve para reflexionar  en cuanto a  las guerras , que solo dejan muertes, desatres, pobreza, entre otras cosas, y revela ante los ojos del mundo la realidad que viven en Birmania.

Rambo (uscito negli States nel 1982 – grande anno quello – con il titolo First Blood) è uno dei miei film preferiti. Ogni volta che Italia 1 o Rete 4 lo ripropongono, e succede molto spesso, me lo gusto volentieri, nonostante ormai conosca la storia (e quasi quasi anche i dialoghi) a memoria.

Io non sono qui per salvare Rambo da voi.
Io sono qui per salvare voi da lui.

Murdock… Sono io che vengo a prenderti!

Chi credi mai che sia quell’uomo? Dio!?
No, Dio potrebbe aver pietà. Lui no!

Queste sono le mie citazioni preferite, tratte rispettivamente dal primo, dal secondo e dal terzo capitolo della saga. Il quarto episodio, decisamente al di sotto del livello dei precedenti, non mi ha lasciato una frase impressa nella memoria, però mi ha fatto scoprire una cosa interessante. In una scena in cui il protagonista è vittima di un incubo, si rivedono dei flashback della vita di Rambo, immagini tratte dai film precedenti. L’ultima immagine mi ha stupito: si vede Rambo colpito da un proiettile sparato dal Colonnello Trautman. Una scena mai esistita!

Grazie a gugol ho scoperto che in realtà quella scena è il finale alternativo – tratto dal libro, quindi in realtà sarebbe il finale vero – del primo film. Vedere per credere:

La morte di John Rambo sarebbe stato un finale decisamente più definitivo, e forse anche più plausibile. E soprattutto avrebbe bloccato tutti i seguiti; sarebbe stato meglio secondo voi?

E della scelta di far rivivere in sogno al reduce del Vietnam degli episodi mai esistiti che ne dite? A me questa scelta è piaciuta. A meno che non sia stato uno dei famosi blooper cinematografici!

With The Expendables soon storming our screens and Rambo 5 tooling up, you’d think Sylvester Stallone might want to take a breather from the massive explosions and give peace a bit of a chance. Well, you’d be half right. The Italian Stallone has a few things on his mind and one of them is a remake of ’70s exploitationer Death Wish.

“I’m thinking about it,” Stallone told us. “It’s a classic morality tale, where you take a civilised man and take away everything that matters to him so he becomes primitive again.”

Eagle-eyed readers will have spotted some thematic similarities between John Rambo and the gnarly vigilante played by Charles Bronson, but the idea of Rambo-Takes-Broadway is still very much at the chewing-over stage. “The story’s been done many times, and when it’s done well, it’s an emotionally engaging film. The trouble with remakes is that people fall in love with the original. It’s like peanut butter. If you try to change the taste of peanut butter, you’re in trouble.”

It’s not all angst-ridden mayhem in the Stallone diary, though. Tearing around the Latin jungle with Dolph Lundgren and the Stath would get anyone’s creative juices flowing, but it’s still a bit of a surprise to hear his passion for a biopic of writer Edgar Allan Poe, high priest of the American Gothic. “I keep telling my producer Avi Lerner, ‘Make Edgar Allan Poe!’ He says, ‘Does he have a gun?’ ‘No, he doesn’t have a gun’, ‘Can he throw a knife?’ I say, ‘No, he writes poetry!’

Sadly the awesome sight of Stallone, quill pen in hand, bashing out The Pit And The Pendulum will be denied us. “Of course, I’m not playing Poe. ‘Yo, Poe!’ It won’t work! It’ll be some young actor because he dies at 39, but it’s gonna happen.”

 John Rambo no ha dicho última palabra. Aunque Stallone parecía haber finiquitado una de sus sagas más conocidas y rentables (junto con Rocky), parece que puede haber una nueva entrega a la vista. Y lo mejor de todo, un cambio radical en la serie. ¿Os imaginais que la acción que destila Rambo tuviese tambien su elemento de ciencia-ficción? Increíble, pero posible. Probablemente el protagonista de “Máximo Riesgo” quiera tener a su propio Predator.

 De momento el título de Rambo V sería el de “Rambo V: The Savage Hunt”. Había dos teorías al respecto sobre lo que podría dar de sí el argumento de marras.

 En primer lugar tenemos lo típico que se suele dar en no pocas películas de acción. Un secuestro. En este caso el de la ¿hija de John Rambo? Pues sí, tenía una hija y nosotros sin saberlo. En este caso seran los líderes de un grupo mafioso los encargados de darle algo de chicha y muertos al asutno. Me quedo con la estupenda “Venganza” de Liam Neeson si tuviese que elegir entre este subgénero. Osea, una historia mil veces vista que sólo tendría su interés en el personaje que nos ocupa.

 Ahora vamos a la que parecía ser un clon de “Soldado Universal”. Instalación secreta americana. Experimentos de rigor. Soldados sin conciencia. Máquinas de matar. Con lo que John Rambo tendría que ingeniarselas para combatir con ellos.

Indudablemente ninguna de las dos historias son para tirar cohetes. Incluso puede que la tercera opción que ha salido a la palestra tampoco lo sea, pero a mí me hace más gracia y puede ser más interesante que las anteriores.

No se si conocereis la novela de ciencia-ficción “Hunter”, pero si es así sabed que Stallone (que de tonto no tiene un pelo) adquirió los derechos hace bastante tiempo. Con lo que la quinta entrega de Rambo podría ser una adaptación cinematográfica sobre ella. Eso sí, con ciertas licencias evidentemente no espereis que sea fiel al cien por cien. La sinopsis oficial no puede ser más cercana a la película de John McTiernan. Salvando las consabidas diferencias.

“Una bestia escapa en algún lugar del norte del Círculo Polar Ártico. Ya ha aniquilado un centro de investigación y un escuadrón de guardias militares. Y la criatura salvaje está dirigiéndose hacía el sur rumbo a la civilización, lista para sembrar una devastación sangrienta.

Es un trabajo que Rambo y su compañero de cacería de 22 años, Beau Brady, no pueden rechazar. Ellos y un equipo ‘asesino’ de Fuerzas Especiales deben descubrir que la presa está más allá de su imaginación más loca: una abominación mitad humana creada por una agencia renegada a partir de una serie de experimentos genéticos fuera de la ley. Y deberán hacer frente a la realidad de que quizás esa bestia ha crecido inmortal”

Dará igual que dicha bestia no venga de un planeta lejano, el tema es que Rambo se alejará completamente de lo que nos tenía acostumbrados. Unos dirán que para mejor, y otros renegarán completamente de dicho cambio en la saga. Aún queda tiempo para saber si esta será la historia definitiva, que estas cosas cambian de la noche a la mañana.

Wie vor einigen Tagen berichtet wird Sylvester Stallone uns auch noch einen 5. Rambo Film bescheren. In der Zwischenzeit sind Titel und einige Infos zur Story veröffentlicht worden.

Rambo 5 – The Savage Hunt
John Rambo soll in Amerika auf der Jagd nach einen flüchtigen Elite-Soldaten sein. In einen geheimen Projekt sollen Soldaten manipuliert oder gezüchtet worden sein, die weder Reue noch moralische Bedenken haben – echte Killermaschinen also. Einer dieser Soldaten soll auf der Flucht sein und von John Rambo, wohl mit Unterstützung einer Elite-Einheit, gestellt werden.

Ja, auch Rambo kommt in die Jahre. Schon im vierten Teil war er nicht mehr komplett auf sich allein gestellt. Ich denke es tut den Film gut, wenn auch andere glänzen dürfen.

there’s been some different versions flying around the net, so who knows which one is legit (other than Stallone)?

The original idea, about Rambo going after human traffickers in Mexico, actually sounded kinda badass.  From what I remember from the Rambo DVD bonus stuff, the human trafficking angle was originally intended for Rambo, but Stallone felt it odd that suddenly John Rambo is back in the U.S. after being in Vietnam, and then Afghanistan in the previous 2.  He needed a story that brought Rambo home, which became last year’s Rambo.

What I like about the human trafficking story is that it has potential to be different without being ridiculous (Rambo movies in general are ridiculous, but Rambo vs a monster is ridiculous).  Think about it: First Blood – Part 2 had Rambo going back to ‘Nam fighting the North Vietnamese.  Rambo III had him in Afghanistan fighting the Soviets.  Rambo put, um… Rambo in Burma fighting the Burmese military.

Sometimes Photoshop can be used for bad, bad things.

What made this last movie work, at least in my own opinion, was that it put John Rambo in his element, and I mean really in his element.  It was so violent, it almost became funny (he shoots a man in half.  Shoots him in half! That’s a pretty funny image, right?).  But, it gave the character a scene, albeit a very brief one, to contemplate his actions and accept who he is, a killing machine.

What Rambo V could be, if they use the Mexico storyline, is a more introspective John Rambo.  Here, he’s not going up against a structured military.  He’s going up against cold-blooded kidnappers, thieves, rapists, etc.  While the people he dispatched in parts 2, 3, and 4 could very well be fighting for something themselves, here you know the people he’s killing are bad to the bone; awful people who have no ideology to fight for, except to continue the evil of slavery in its modern form and profit from it.  Sometimes you’d need a monster to kill a monster, and John Rambo is the perfect killing machine, who just happens to have a bit of a conscience.

This could also bring the series back to the original (and arguably, best entry).  In First Blood, Rambo is going through serious post-traumatic stress, and having an a-hole of a sheriff on your case isn’t helping.  But that’s what the film was centered on: Rambo dealing with his demons from ‘Nam; it’s something personal.  In V, if his goal is to save a girl, a single person with which to focus all his intent, it becomes personal again.  It’s a smaller-scale story, but could yield the highest emotional investment from the character, and potentially the audience.  If Stallone goes the opposite route, and plays it safe with another action plot stuck in the 80’s (like if Rambo were to go back to Afghanistan to search for bin Laden), then it might ring hollow with viewers.

Anyway, that’s my take on this newest Rambo V news.  I’ll still watch whatever the movie turns out to be; I’m a fan enough of Stallone as a director to trust he’ll do the right thing with this character and franchise.

Rambo V was recently green lit by Millenium films. Sylvester Stallone is apprently turning the novel “Hunter” into the plot for the fifth installment. Here is the plot synonpsis.

John Rambo could track anyone – or anything – on earth. Now the military desperately needs him for a mission that his ultrasensitive instincts tell him he should refuse. A beast is loose somewhere north of the Artic Circle. It has already decimated a secret research facility and annihilated a squad of elite military guards. And the raging creature is headed south toward civilization, ready to wreak bloody devastation.

It’s a job that Rambo and his 22-year-old hunting partner, Beau Brady, can’t turn down, but they and a team of highly-skilled special forces kill team discover that the prey is a terror beyond their wildest imagination – a half-human abomination created by a renegade agency through a series of outlawed genetic experiments. It has man’s cunning, a predator’s savageness, and a prehistoric power that has transcended the ages. And even if Rambo and Beau survive its unrelenting hunger for human blood, they’ll still have to contront the grim reality that it may have grown immortal.

O eterno marombado Sylvester Stallone tem dado um gás extra em sua carreira cinematográfica nos últimos anos. Dono de personagens icônicos como Rocky Balboa e John Rambo, o ator e diretor parece estar em ótima forma. Em 2006 reviveu o lendário Balboa num filme bastante elogiado por público e crítica. No ano passado (2008), foi a vez do truculento Rambo voltar às telonas. Aos 63 anos, Stallone corre, pula, mata… faz tudo como se ainda fosse o mesmo jovem de décadas atrás. É claro que sempre haverá uma meia duzia dizendo que sua forma física é mantida através de anabolizantes… pura besteira! Cabe a nós avaliar seu comportamento apenas diante das câmeras.

No quarto episódio da franquia, o impiedoso John Rambo volta mais violento do que nunca. Falando nisso, é bom avisar aos de estômago fraco que Rambo IV possui cenas bem fortes - de dar inveja, inclusive, aos mais sangrentos filmes de terror. Brincadeiras à parte, a nova empreitada do soldado quase-imortal possui alguns prós e muitos contras. Aliás, já que vamos falar mal, é bom iniciar por um ponto chave: os diálogos em alguns momentos chegam a ser risíveis, manjados e nada profundos: “Viva por nada ou morra por algo” (essa foi uma das célebres frases do nosso Confúcio do século XXI).

Os esteriótipos também aparecem com muita clareza no episódio. Temos os soldados maus que matam tudo o que aparece pela frente, os americanos idiotas que se portam como os melhores do mundo, a mocinha que é presa e acaba incentivando a volta do ‘aposentado’ Rambo… e por aí vai. Além, é claro, da previsibilidade do roteiro. Ninguém precisa assistir ao filme para saber o que vai acontecer no final. 

A história por si só é bem fraquinha. O roteirista Art Monterastelli tinha um leque infinito de possibilidades ao retratar o cotidiano vivido pelo povo de Mianmar. No entanto, a falta de cuidado e sensibilidade resultou numa obra rasa e sem o mínimo fim ideológico – o que é uma pena, pois se trata de um assunto ainda pouco explorado pelo cinema. Para piorar, vemos clichês disparados a todo o momento, sem dó nem piedade do espectador, que aguenta firme durante pouco mais de 90 minutos só por causa do bom trabalho de Stallone.

Pois é, caro leitor! Apesar de ser um longa descartável em quase tudo, o veterano Sylvester Stallone até que consegue um resultado interessante (bem acima da média no gênero). Ao optar por fazer um filme curto, Stallone é bem objetivo e prende o espectador durante todo o tempo. Nisso ele acertou em cheio e foi bem inteligente, já que a maioria dos diretores por aí acha que história boa é aquela que demora uma eternidade para acabar. No mais, ele aplica muito bem elementos básicos do cinema - como trilha sonora, por exemplo.

Podemos dizer que Rambo IV tem seus bons momentos. É extremamente frenético, eletrizante e empolga quem está assistindo com propriedade (especialmente nos 30 minutos finais). Fica difícil cobrar uma obra-prima ou algo do tipo. O quarto episódio da saga de John Rambo é mais do mesmo, só que bem mais violento e divertido - tirando o efeito canhestro daquela bomba explodindo no meio da floresta, é claro.

The “Saw” franchise doesn’t have jack on Sly’s ability to keep a brand going. According to Variety, Stallone will be preparing for a fifth Rambo as Nu Image/Millennium Films plans to begin production in the spring. Sly will return as director, writer, and star, the same duties he took on for 2008’s “Rambo”.

Variety describes the story as “[revolving] around Rambo fighting his way through human traffickers and drug lords to rescue a young girl abducted near the U.S.-Mexico border.”

The fifth film in the Rambo series proves that Stallone still has a following. Sylvester’s own Rocky series, which he wrote, starred, and directed (save for the first), had its sixth film in 2006 with “Rocky Balboa”. However, unlike the generally positive reviews that “Balboa” received (76% on the Tomatometer), “Rambo” did not fare as well (37%).

Despite the reviews, “Rambo” was a box office success for Stallone and Nu Image/Millennium Films, bringing in $42.7 million domestically on its way to a $113 million worldwide gross.

Currently in post-production by Nu Image/Millennium Films is the Stallone actioner “The Expendables”, due April 23. Sly has lent his services as writer, director, and star again, but this time he has gathered a who’s-who of action film stars: Jason Statham, Jet Li, Mickey Rourke, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture and Steve Austin with cameos by Arnold Schwarzenegger (spelled right on the first time) and Bruce Willis.

Having only seen the first two films of both franchises, I clearly have some catching up to do.

Aftonbladet skriver i den här artikeln att en ny Rambo-film är i pipeline. Det är oklart när det blir premiär, men efter vad man kan utläsa i artikeln lär den inte bjuda på många överraskningar.

Den här gången är Rambo på jakt efter en bortrövad flicka – och får tillfälle att röja upp bland människosmugglare och knarkkungar längs gränsen mellan USA och Mexiko.

Utan att slösa med orden kan vi väl konstatera att förra filmen var rätt störig. Visst är Rambo en kultfigur, och föregångarna från 80-talet är actionklassiker, men trots att senaste rullen innehöll en hel del välgjorda sekvenser och väl var hyfsat sevärd på sina håll så är en film som till hälften består av ett svettigt stenansikte som mejar ner skurkar med en gigantisk kulspruta inget annat än vansinnigt störande.

Huruvida del fem i serien blir lika störig återsår att se.

Sylvester Stallone ha conseguido convencer a Nu Image / Millenium Films para producir una quinta (¿y quién dijo última?) entrega de Rambo. De hecho el estudio ya ha marcado la primavera de 2.010 como fecha de inicio de la producción probablemente con inicios de 2.011 como fechas para el estreno. Stallone volverá a participar como director de la película y por supuesto repetirá como protagonista, tal y como hizo con la cuarta entrega estrenada en 2.008. Esta vez John Rambo, un antiguo combatiente de Vietnam con una extraordinaria capacidad para el combate, se alejará de exóticos ambientes y se quedará en casa, ya que en esta nueva película su misión será rescatar a una niña secuestrada por un grupo de traficantes de seres humanos y drogas que opera cerca de la frontera de México. Que se preparen…

John Rambo’s officially readying for a fifth mission.

Nu Image/Millennium Films has greenlit the franchise’s fifth installment, with Sylvester Stallone starring and directing, repeating his duties from 2008’s “Rambo.”

The upcoming project’s storyline revolves around Rambo fighting his way through human traffickers and drug lords to rescue a young girl abducted near the U.S.-Mexico border. Production will start in the spring.

The film will be produced by Avi Lerner, Kevin King Templeton and John Thompson. Danny Dimbort, Trevor Short and Boaz Davidson will exec produce.

Stallone had indicated in interviews that a fifth Rambo was in the works. He teamed with Nu Image/Millennium on the 2008 project, which grossed $42 million domestically and $113 million overseas.

Nu Image/Millennium is in post-production on “Expendables,” starring Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li and Mickey Rourke. The actioner’s set for release on April 23 through Lionsgate.

Rambo first appeared in the 1982 pic “First Blood,” followed in 1985 by “First Blood II” and in 1988 by “Rambo III.”

The Best Rambo Movie Ever

Rambo 4: John Rambo brings home realities of this world that Catholics and other Christians may have to face and deal squarely: (1) the brutality of war; (2) the moral dilemma faced by those who were forced to engage a brutal regime in warfare in order to save innocent lives; (3) the limitations of nonviolence against an evil that never hesitate to take lives of innocent people; (4) the awakening of a person’s call to violence albeit on the side of the good; and (5) the deep yearning of regaining home.

The brutality of war. The film proposes that Christians need to find their calls for service in a place in war. Whether they are truly called to risk their lives to bring medicines and the message of Christian faith (as espoused by the missionaries) or simply recognize their human limitations and do what they can reasonably within that limitations without risking their lives senselessly (as espoused by John Rambo).

No direct answer has been provided by the movie. The decision of the missionaries turned out to be a misplaced and headstrong commitment to an unrealistic ideal which brought them to the edge of death and sexual molestation (as in the case of Sarah). The mission apparently failed to even save the lives of the people they ministered. And their work seemed too early to matter in the religious life of the villagers themselves.

But apparently God ensures that these missionaries, or at least most of them, are protected from death. And John Rambo became the hand of God that brutally dealt with the death-dealers in order to save the missionaries. It is a spiritually insightful plot. God characteristically permit even the worst things to happen in order change the lives of his people, this time both the missionaries and John. The missionaries realized that when their lives are threatened they need to fight back with brutality. John Rambo got a grip of who he really was and found himself recapturing home.

The moral dilemma of killing. Rambo 4 presented a strong inevitability that a warrior who chose nonviolence have to contend with in order to save other people’s lives. It is a sound Christian value to offer oneself as a sacrifice to save others’ lives and confront evil headon. The Lord did it himself. John Rambo have to decide to follow the calling of a killing machine, strong and effective enough to rescue innocent civilians from sure death, not for himself but for what is something good (protecting the helpless). Catholic social teaching support this act of sacrifice and of protecting the innocent people.

The limitations of nonviolence. The film glaringly presented the limitations of the philosophy of nonviolence before an enemy that would not hesitate to kill. The primary strength a nonviolent protest is its ability not to provoke violence while working for change. But before an evil that will kill without provokation, nonviolence would result to senseless death, often without bringing the change they seek. Unless a proper discernment towards dying precedes this decision, Rambo 4 proposed that nonviolent groups need to find a more effective means of stopping violence or serving the innocent victims (maybe by rescuing them instead) without having to die themselves. Being headstrong against something so evil would be very dangerous and foolhardy if you have no capability to deal with them. It says that battles at times may be left lost in order to win the war.

A call to violence. John may be reluctant to tread back on the path of violence, but his call to live what appeared to be his call to violence in the service of the good appeared genuine only in the context that God allows it through his infinite wisdom. And John had to respond.

The deep yearning for home. This part of the film deals with the softer side in all of us symbolized by John Rambo. No matter how far a child goes away from where he came from, he would always be yearning to be back home. It also hints on the yearnings of Christians who looked forward of going back home to their Father in Heaven.
