“At night another minor operation preceded the relief. Orders were given for B Company which held the right of the Battalion’s line, to seize the much-disputed Cepy Farm and hand it over to the incoming Berks. Moberly, who had recently rejoined his old Battalion, was in command of this enterprise. The farm was reached and duly occupied, but when the time for handing over to the Berks arrived our post was driven out by a strong party of the enemy.”

“Wallington, the officer in command of the storming party, killed several Germans. As often, there was difficulty in finding the way back to our lines; in fact, Moberly, the commander of the raid, after some wandering in No-Man’s-Land, entered the trenches of a Scotch division upon our right. His appearance and comparative inability to speak their language made him a suspicious visitor to our kilted neighbours. Moberly rejoined his countrymen under escort.”

In 1914 Walter Hamilton Moberly wrote a book, Christian Conduct in War Time (1914). The book is freely available as a download from www.archive.org. I would love to know how Moberly’s views changed over the course of the war.

Biography of Sir Walter Hamilton Moberly

Sir Walter Hamilton Moberly, GBE, KCB, Kt, DSO (20 October 1881 – 31 January 1974) was a British academic.

The son of Rev. Robert Campbell Moberly, Moberly was educated at Winchester and New College, Oxford. He was later a lecturer in political science at the University of Aberdeen from 1905-06 and served in World War I with the Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, being twice mentioned in despatches.

After the war, he was professor of philosophy at the University of Birmingham from 1921-24, Principal of the University College of the South West of England from 1925-26, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester from 1926-34, Chairman of the University Grants Committee from 1935-49 and Principal of St Catherine’s Foundation from 1949-55.

Moberly was also an author, having written such books as The Crisis in the University (1949) and The Ethics of Punishment.

Winchester College’s main library is named after him.

Ayer hizo cinco años que le retiraron el número en Salt Lake City a John Stockton, uno de los mejores bases de la historia. 19 temporadas dirigiendo a los Utah Jazz le sirvieron para ahora ser líder histórico de la liga en asistencias con 15806 y un buen colchón al segundo Mark Jackson que se retiró con 10334 y Jason Kidd que le superará lo más probable esta semana ya que lleva 10317. Sin embargo, John Stockton se le recordará sobre todo por su sociedad con Karl Malone y sus clases magistrales de cómo ejecutar el Pick and Roll, jugada que repetían hasta la saciedad y casi siempre con la misma respuesta final: la canasta.

El Pick and Roll lo podríamos traducir como Bloqueo y Continuación. Es la jugada principal de los equipos de la NBA.  Se usa en un 18.6% de los ataques según un informe sobre el uso del Pick and Roll en la NBA de la empresa Synergy Sports.

Veamos como funciona:

Esta jugada proporciona a los equipos una infinidad de soluciones en ataque. Normalmente se inicia con el bote del base fuera del perímetro que espera un bloqueo directo de un jugador interior para iniciar la jugada. Una vez hecho, el bloqueo directo abre un amplio abanico de posibilidades para el ataque. Tres son las soluciones ofensivas básicas en esta jugada:

1. Después del bloqueo el base se queda sin defensa unos segundos y puede o tirar o penetrar a canasta
2. Después del bloqueo el pívot o alero continúan hacia canasta o hacia la línea de 3 y el base le dobla el balón para que encesten con facilidad ya que los defensores aun se encuentran intentando solucionar la posición privilegiada del base.
3. Si después del bloqueo aparece alguna ayuda de algún defensor, normalmente de algún alero, el base tiene la posibilidad la mayor parte de veces de doblar la pelota al jugador exterior que se encuentra solo para que éste disponga de un tiro cómodo (las esquinas suele ser el lugar preferido para estos tiros).

Como decía Eddie Jordan (entrenador de Philadelphia 76Sixers: “Si es Tim Duncan el que va hacia canasta, tú quieres llevar la ayuda a este jugador. Ahora si tu rival tiene a Tony Parker y Tim Duncan, tú tienes que parar la pelota, que es Tony Parker,  y dar la ayuda. Entonces tú dejas solo a algún jugador abierto. Probablemente, Manu Ginobili para el triple. Así que tú tienes que escoger el veneno que quieres”.

Y es que la efectividad de esta jugada es tal que los equipos están cambiando su configuración de plantilla. Ahora las principales piezas para un equipo son un base rápido y con buen tiro (Tony Parker, aunque su tiro no sea muy fiable), un pívot con buena movilidad (Tim Duncan) y un alero con buen tiro desde el exterior (Manu Ginobili). Estas tres piezas se sintonizan gracias al Pick and Roll.

Miami Heat y San Antonio Spurs son en la actualidad los equipos que más utilizan este recurso, ambos lo usan uno de cada cuatro ataques. En cambio, Utah Jaz ha pasado de ser la imagen del Pick and Roll con la pareja Stockton-Malone a ser el equipo que menos lo utiliza con apenas un 11% y eso a pesar de contar en su equipo con Deron Williams y Carlos Boozer, dignos sucesores de la anterior pareja de los Jazz. A Jerry Sloan (entrenador de Utah Jazz desde los tiempos de Stockton y Malone) parece que ya no le quita el sueño el Bloqueo y Continuación y ahora basa su juego en el Corta y Lee, para él primero hay que saber llevar otro tipo de juego y usar solo este recurso para cuando sea esencial, y eso para él es a la hora de finalizar jugadas o acelerar los ataques.

Phil Jackson (Entrenador de Los Ángeles Lakers) es otro de los que usa sólo el Pick and Roll cuando es estrictamente necesario. El juego de sus equipos se basa en  “Triángulo mágico”, una jugada que le ha dado un éxito altísimo y combinado con las grandes estrellas que siempre ha contado (Michael Jordan y Scottie Pippen en Chicago Bulls o Shaquille O’neal, Pau Gasol y Kobe Bryant en los Lakers por poner algún ejemplo) le han llevado a poseer ya 10 campeonatos como entrenador principal.

Tener grandes jugadores es esencial para ejecutar jugada es algo que no es nada nuevo, y el Pick and Roll es una muestra clara de ello. Si antes el gran dominador de este juego era el base John Stockton ahora lo es su alumno más aventajado: Steve Nash (Phoenix Suns). El base de los Suns lo utiliza en un 59.8% de los ataques que dirige y consigue 1,06 puntos por cada posesión. Esos números son realmente espectaculares aunque Nash no es el más productivo, hasta tres jugadores superan sus puntos por posesión: Jameer Nelson (Orlando Magic) con 1,15; Lebron James (Cleveland Cavaliers) con 1,10 y Chris Paul (New Orleans Hornets) con 1,08.

Cada vez el Bloqueo y Continuación está más estudiado por los entrenadores y plantean más complicaciones a su ejecución, sin embargo, esta jugada sigue en plena progresión en las libretas de los entrenadores y se usa hasta un 3% más que hace cinco años. En defensa, las principales opciones se basan en pasar el bloqueo de manera agresiva por delante, esperar pasivamente detrás del bloqueo o perseguir al base hasta recuperar la posición yendo por detrás suyo en el bloqueo. La más usada es la primera aunque la estadística muestra que la espera pasiva detrás del bloqueo es más efectiva (Por delante un jugador como Lebron James produce 1,20 puntos por posesión y; en cambio, defendido por detrás baja sus números hasta 0,97 puntos por posesión).

John Stockton, un base entre bases

La figura del Pick and Roll está presente en cada partido de la NBA, una vez tras otra, esto en parte es legado de John Stockton y su gran sociedad con Karl Malone, que aunque no fueron ni mucho menos sus inventores nos mostraban en cada partido como llegar a la canasta de esta manera. Cambiaron de paradigma en el juego, el ya gastado juego desde el poste alto para iniciar quedó atrás para la llegada de una jugada que hacia participar a más gente y complicar exponencialmente su defensa. Por todo esto y mucho más: ¡Gracias, John!

He was great in this 1992 Olympic Dream Team piece, starting his career in comedy nearly 20 years ago.

In September, he killed it at the Hall of Fame Induction.

Which brings us to today, in which I found this classic video of him outdoing Magic Johnson in his very own Diet Pepsi spot.

A&E needs to give Stockton a reality show for him, his wife and their 23 kids.

La posición de base es posiblemente la más complicada para un jugador. Un buen base debe aunar técnica, inteligencia y no estaría de más que fuera rápido y buen tirador. Pero además de todo eso a un base se le pide que sea un líder y que dirija el juego del equipo.

La figura del base en muchos equipos apenas goza de importancia dado el tipo de juego, ya que muchos equipos basan su juego en pasársela al bueno y ver que hace, sin embargo, un buen base nunca está de más y si sabe dominar los tiempos del partido, puede ser más determinante que cualquier jugador franquicia de la posición que sea.

En los últimos años la NBA ha estado en crisis en esta posición. Después de la retirada de bases de la talla de Magic Johnson, Isiah Thomas, John Stockton o Gary Payton la liga vivía algo huérfana de bases dominantes. Algunos años buenos de Jason Kidd o Steve Nash parecía que ejercían de transición hacía una nueva ornada de directores de juego determinantes.

Después de esos años en tierra de nadie posiblemente ahora nos encontremos en uno de los mejores momentos en esa posición. La llegada a la liga de Chris Paul o Deron Williams han cambiado la perspectiva que se tenía de los bases estas últimas temporadas.

De hecho, Chris Paul (New Orleans Hornets) y Deron Williams (Utah Jazz) son a día de hoy los mejores jugadores en esta posición. Ambos aúnan una técnica del balón exquisita, un poder anotador bastante alto, una visión de juego privilegiada y sobre todo una facilidad para la toma de decisiones muy por encima de la media. Si a eso le añadimos un gran control del juego de sus equipos y una capacidad innata para superar adversidades hacen de estos dos los grandes dominadores de la posición. Elegir a uno es complicado. Williams cuenta con un crossover imparable que lo hace decisivo cuando su equipo se estanca y Paul tiene una facilidad para hacer números fuera de lo común. Lo dicho muy difícil.

Detrás de estos dos monstruos anda no muy lejos Steve Nash (Phoenix Suns). Considerado mejor base del planeta los últimos años, pero que el año pasado se vio superado por ellos tras una no muy buena temporada suya.  Con la salida de Shaquille O’neal su equipo vuelve a jugar a su ritmo y el Run&Gun puede devolver a Nash a la élite de los bases, si es que alguna vez ha dejado de formar parte de ella. De momento, su espectacular inicio de temporada lo sitúa de nuevo al nivel de los dos anteriormente citados.

Un peldaño más abajo encontramos un grupo de bases de un nivel muy alto pero que no determinan tanto el rumbo de un partido como estos tres. Chauncey Billups (Denver Nuggets) es la viva imagen del liderazgo, posee las mismas virtudes que los anteriormente citados, sin embargo, su nivel no es capaz de alcanzar los topes de estos tres en estos momentos; Tony Parker (San Antonio Spurs) posiblemente sea el mejor base en el uno contra uno, su juego se ha tachado muchas veces de individualista pero su palmares colectivo disipa cualquier duda que se tenga sobre su juego; Gilbert Arenas (Washington Wizards) es la figura del base anotador, una figura en peligro de extinción los últimos años, ya recuperado de la lesión parece haber recuperado su mejor nivel; y José Manuel Calderón (Toronto Raptors) que se postula como ejemplo de base organizador, pese a que no está en un buen momento de forma, el español es capaz de dirigir a su equipo con solvencia sin necesidad de hacer grandes números.

El puesto de base está de moda,  y eso lo podemos ver en los últimos draft en qué es la posición que más escogen los general manager. Eso está provocando que una nueva generación de directores de juego aceche a esos grandes bases. El futuro está garantizado con bases de la talla de Devin Harris (New Jersey Nets), una auténtica joya en campo abierto; Jameer Nelson (Orlando Magic), un organizador que ha mostrado sus garantías ayudando a devolver a los Magic a la élite; Rajon Rondo (Celtics Boston), sin duda, el mejor base defensivo;  Derrick Rose (Chicago Bulls), la esperanza de un equipo a la deriva los últimos años y con pinta de convertirse en un All Star tiránico las próximas temporadas o los Rookies Brandon Jennings (Milwaukke Bucks) o Jonny Flynn (Minnesota Timberwolves) que están dando muy buenas sensaciones en este inicio liguero.

Para acabar, no nos podemos olvidar de los viejos rockeros Jason Kidd (Dallas Mavericks) y Baron Davis (Los Angeles Clippers) que están dando sus últimos coletazos en la liga, pero que todavía poseen esa clase que los hizo hacerse un nombre en la NBA.

Viernes 16 de octubre de 2009. Doce de la noche. Enciendo el ordenador y abro Mozilla Firefox. Algo normal de una noche cualquiera. Pero, cuando ya el sábado echaba a andar, me entero del fallecimiento de un mito para mí. De un modelo a seguir como periodista. Andrés Montes era, probablemente el mejor narrador de baloncesto del mundo. Pero no quiero centrarme en los hechos ocurridos, quiero ir a lo que un profesional como él significaba para mi, tanto a nivel personal como profesional.

Cuando yo empecé a aficionarme a la mejor liga del mundo, me fascinó el estilo con el que se narraba. Acostumbrado a oir en Telemadrid a José María del Toro o en TVE a José Ángel de la Casa, me llamo la atención aquella pareja de periodistas que decía motes de jugadores que ni me sonaban. ¡Dios, que grandes momentos!. Necesitaba cada día mi ración diaria de NBA. Ellos me enseñaron a amar este deporte. Pero sobre todo, me enseñaron a amar esta profesión y convertirla en mi vocación. Cuando la cabecera sonaba, yo ya estaba preparado para horas de diversión, formación y basket. Eso lo hicistes tú Andrés.

Cuando te fuiste a La Sexta y Antoni dejó de hacer tantos partidos, la nba en Canal+ perdió mucho para mi. La veía, porque vosotros me enseñasteis a amar esta bendita liga, pero no era lo mismo. Tantos años de recuerdos, que vuestras voces eran mas caracteristicas para mí que el balón Spalding naranja.

Me hubiera encantado conocerte Andrés. Eras la voz de un deporte. Esa voz que provocaba mi sueño en clase. Esa voz que se ha apagado pero que tenemos grabada a fuego en nuestro corazones. Me cuesta escribir sobre ti, porque aún pienso que estás con nosotros. Pero sé que en el maravilloso sitio donde estés, estarás leyendo esto y disfrutando de Wilt Chamberlain o Drazen Petrovic. Gracias Andrés por esos momentos mágicos. Gracias por enseñarme el camino de mi vida profesional. Gracias por abrirme los ojos al deporte que adoro. Gracias por todo eso y más. Porque aunque no nos conocieramos, te sentía un amigo más en cada narración. Siempre serás la voz, la voz de mis noches sin dormir. Hasta siempre Andrés. Gracias.

The Jazz’s franchise began in 1974 in New Orleans. After five seasons they moved to Salt Lake City, Utah. Their first playoff appearance was in 1984. Impressively, the Jazz consistently made the playoffs until 2004. Their ‘02-’03 season marked the end of an era, as both John Stockton and Karl Malone left the team. A great deal of the Jazz’s success can be attributed to Stockton and Malone. They made the NBA finals in both their ‘96-’97 and ‘97-’98 seasons. Unfortunately, both times they were defeated by the Chicago Bulls.

This Season:

In their most recent preseason game, the Jazz beat the Portland Trail Blazers 99-96. Eric Maynor, a rookie guard, showed promise as he scored 14 points. Mehmet Okur was the leading scorer with 15 points. Wesley Matthews, Ronnie Brewer, and Deron Williams were also double-digit scorers. The Jazz have shown a lot of promise in the preseason. I fully expect to see them in the playoffs. Maybe they will be first in the Northwest Division.

El sábado pasado, mientras leía el periódico, en la sección de deportes me encontré con una nota que mencionaba que finalmente había ocurrido lo que era cuestión de tiempo, Michael Jordan entraba en el Salón de la Fama de la NBA. Sin embargo, no fue eso lo que me llamó la atención, sino el jugador que estaba dos lugares a la izquierda de “Air23″, ese jugador era John Stockton, el máximo pasador de todos los tiempos con 15,806 asistencias y que además tiene el récord de robos de balón con 3,265, cabe destacar que ambos récords tienen amplio margen con el segundo lugar (5,000 asistencias de ventaja y 700 robos más, el segundo lugar en robos es curiosamente Jordan con 2,514). Posee el récord del mayor número de temporadas jugadas y partidos consecutivos jugados con un mismo equipo, y es el tercer jugador que más partidos ha jugado, sólo por detrás de Kareem Abdul-Jabbar y Robert Parish. Un jugador que fue clave en las dos Finales consecutivas que enfrentaron a los Toros de Chicago vs el Jazz de Utah, aquellas grandiosas finales de 1996-1997 y 1997-1998 donde sólo la habilidad de Jordan, junto con Pippen y Rodman y con Phil Jackson en el banquillo pudo detener a la dupla de Stockton y Karl “el Cartero” Malone.

Recuerdo que antes de eso, el basquetbol me interesaba muy vagamente, jugaba de vez en cuando, pero a partir de esa primera final que los enfrentó, lograron llamar mi atención sobre ese deporte. Todo ese año y el siguiente, jugué mucho durante los recreos en la primaria, queriendo emular a mis ídolos.

La razón por la cual apoyé al equipo no favorito esas dos finales (que eventualmente se confirmó la derrota en ambas) fue que Michael Jordan para ese entonces estaba en el pináculo de su carrera, ya lo había ganado todo, en cambio, el Jazz venía a sus primeras finales, con dos jugadores (Stockton y Malone) que demostraban que no todo era volar por los aires y hacer clavadas espectaculares para dar buen juego.

Tan buenos duelos se dieron durante esas dos finales que por primera y única vez en la historia, la final de 1998 de la NBA sobrepasó el rating de la Serie Mundial de la MLB de ese año. Incluso, la canasta ganadora del 6º partido de la final de 1998 y que a la postre haría campeones a los Toros, ha sido inmortalizada como “The Shot”, con 41.9 segundos restantes, los Toros tuvieron una sacudida cuando John Stockton anotó un tiro de 3 puntos para poner a Utah 86-83 y hacer que el Delta Center se volviera un pandemónium. Después Jordan anotó 2 puntos para dejar el marcador 86-85. Los Toros necesitaban evitar que Utah anotara de nuevo. Cuando Stockton le pasó el balón a Malone, Jordan robó la pelota y se fue al ataque, enfrente tenía a Bryon Russell, uno de los mejores defensores de perímetro del Jazz. Jordan se metió dentro de la línea de 3 puntos, hizó rápido quiebre (posiblemente empujando a Russell, pero los oficiales no marcaron falta) y encestó un tiro en el aire a 6 metros del aro para darle a los Toros una ventaja de 87-86 faltando 5.2 segundos. Tras un tiempo fuera, el intento de Stockton de tiro de 3 puntos pegó en el aro y botó fuera, dándole a Chicago su sexto título NBA en 8 años. Pero mejor vean el vídeo:

No estoy diciendo que aborrezca o le tenga inquina a Jordan, al contrario, me considero fan de sus jugadas espectaculares y toda la parafernalia (Space Jam incluida) que involucra su figura (ey, yo también quise tener unos AirJordan autografiados).

La historia quizás sólo recuerde los triunfos de Jordan, pero para mí siempre habrá lugar en el recuerdo para los segundos lugares esos años, el Jazz de Utah y sus jugadores, que dieron digna y férrea batalla y vendieron cara la derrota. Enhorabuena a ambos jugadores por su logro este año.

THE 2009 BASKETBALL HOF INDUCTEES

September 10, 2009 was defintiely a day to remember, especially to all basketball aficionados all around the world, as 5 people who made their best in the Basketball scene were honored in this grand appreciation for themselves. This is how Basketball Hall of Hame is described this year. With more than five hundred people witnessing it in Springfield and more than million watching it.

The 2009 inductees are Basketball players John Stockton, David Robinson, and Michael Jordan along with Basketball coaches Jerry Sloan and C. Vivian Stringer. One of them had their own inductees, as David Thompson has Michael Jordan. To begin with the ceremony, Basketball analyst Pete Vescey had his own welcome remarks and even uttered some exclamatory sentences to make it livelier. Some had their serious speeches, especially for Michael Jordan, who even cried after being appreciated by everyone, which includes his former teammates in Chicago Bulls with the likes of Scottie Pippen, Toni Kukoc, and Dennis Rodman. But on the lighter side, John Stockton had his own share of funny memories, and he even insisted that some people in his hometown went to the ceremony just to see Michael Jordan, who was known by many as the greatest basketball player ever lived, without a doubt.

Again, congratulations to them and they really deserve it.

Con tanto Eurobasket tengo algo abandonada la NBA, así que haré un pequeño alto en el camino para hacer un repaso a alguna de las cosas que han pasado últimamente por allí. En otras palabras, la típica ración de noticias raras, estrambóticas o simplemente curiosas que tanto nos gustan a todos. ¡Qué bien se lo pasan los Jazz!: No, Deron Williams y Kyle Korver no quieren imitar el estilismo de Bruno (aunque Korver tiene un parecido ciertamente inquietante…).  Simplemente están jugando un partido de dodgeball ataviados con unas espectaculares camisetas de Cazafatantasmas de look retro que me han cautivado. Las imágenes pertenecen al torneo benéfico que prepararon los dos jugadores de los Utah Jazz hace unos días, y que atrajo a la nada despreciable cantidad de 40 equipos. Bonzi Never Dies: Si alguien creía que la NBA había visto la malcarada jeta de Bonzi Wells por última vez, está muy equivocado. El que fuera ilustre miembro de los Jail Blazers y recorriera media NBA antes de cruzar el océano para ganar algo de dinerito en China está recuperando la forma en Chicago (junto a Dwyane Wade y Jermaine O’Neal, dicen), y utiliza su Twitter de forma descarada para intentar fichar por los Miami Heat. “Estoy intentando fichar por los Heat, pero es una cuestión política” o “Me encantaría jugar en Miami, seguro que podría echarles una mano” son sólo dos de sus tweets. O’Neal también está apoyando su campaña (“Espero que le fichen, creo que podría ayudarnos”), demostrando así que sigue teniendo la cabeza igual de mal amueblada que siempre. Sólo espero que Pat Riley no se dé por aludido, porque no creo que Wells fuera el jugador en el que estaba pensando Wade cuando pidió un equipo más competitivo…

Los Knicks, a la desesperada: Me estoy imaginando la escena en los despachos: Donnie Walsh se pregunta por qué tardaron tanto en ir a por Ramon Sessions, y busca un base con el que reforzar su equipo. Entra Charles Bonsignore, agente de jugadores, y le dice que sin duda una de las mejores opciones que hay ahora mismo en el mercado es uno de sus clientes, un base de 2,02 metros de altura que tiene un anillo de campeón. Walsh acepta rápidamente, sólo para darse cuenta de que el jugador del que habla Bonsignore es… Sun Yue. Sí, amigos, los Knicks han fichado al “Magic Johson chino”, con un contrato parcialmente garantizado, eso sí, y le probarán en el próximo training camp, al igual que harán con Gabe Pruitt, el ex de los Celtics. Lo paradójico de todo es que de quedarse Yue en el equiop, sería el único jugador con un anillo en los Knicks, pese a haber chupado banquillo toda la temporada. Qué cosas…

(Por cierto, que los Bucks no ejercieron su derecho de tanteo sobre la oferta de Minnesota por Sessions, y el ya ex jugador de Milwaukee será presumiblemente, y si Jonny Flynn no lo impide, el base titular del equipo el año que viene. La única buena noticia para una franquicia a la que la próxima temporada puede hacerse muy larga…)

El Cartero llegó, aunque fuera tarde: Si alguien se fijó en las caras que había entre el público el sábado en la ceremonia de introducción al Hall of Fame, sin duda echaría de menos a una: la de Karl Malone, el inseparable compañero de John Stockton en los Jazz durante los ochenta y los noventa. Se hacía extraño no ver al Cartero el día en que Stockton y Jerry Sloan entraban en el Hall of Fame. Todo tiene su explicación: al parecer el padrastro de Malone tenía graves problemas de salud, y eso impidió a Karl asistir a la ceremonia, pero no escaparse por unas horas para pasarse por Connecticut para saludar en persona a dos de las personas más importantes de su vida deportiva. Este hombre siempre queda bien con los suyos…

Y para acabar, dos regalitos en forma de vídeos. Por un lado en Basketbawful acaban de colgar un recopilatorio de los mejores anuncios protagonizados por el mismísimo Larry Bird, y debéis echarle un vistazo si sabéis lo que es bueno. Por otro lado, un vídeo que no es de la NBA, sino del Eurobasket. Como uno no tiene Gol TV y no puede ver los partidos que no son de España, se pierde jugadas como la siguiente, en la que Sofoklis Schortsianitis imita a Shaquille O’Neal (o a Daryl Dawkins, ya puestos) y está a punto de romper un tablero frente a Alemania. ¡Pero qué bicharraco, por Dios!

Bueno, a ver cómo queda ese grupo que cierra hoy sus partidos en Polonia, y de donde saldrá nuestro rival en cuartos (si ganamos a Polonia, claro)…

All the madness going on this weekend. US Open, September 11th anniversary, MTV VMA Awards and my life as well. I almost forgot Michael Jordan was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, Friday evening. Michael Jeffrey “Air” Jordan. This is a great moment, but a terrible and sad moment at the same time. As much as we get to reminisce on the greatest basketball player to LIVE, it’s means the torch is officially passed. WE love YOU, MICHAEL. Greatest of ALL TIME!!

Others to receive an Induction into the Hall of Fame (2009) included David “The Admiral” Robinson, Jerry Sloan, John Stockton and Vivian Stringer. What a great year for the Basketball Hall of Fame. All Hail.

Hall of Shame Fame Induction Speech

I got to see most of the NBA Hall of Fame Induction ceremony.  Congrats to some deserving new members.  John Stockton, David Robinson, Jerry Sloan and C. Vivian Stringer are definitely worthy of their honors.  I thought Stringer’s speech was quite moving and heartfelt.  But I’ll be damn if Michael Jordan’s speech wasn’t the most unusual that I have ever heard in any sport.

On one hand as he sat there before being introduced and the video tribute played for him preceeding his introduction, the man seemed so humbled and out of his comfort zone.   He knew this was the pinnacle of any player’s career and he was about the be crowned.   When he got to the mic he was in tears as he tried to muddle through his first few words.  But boy oh boy did he warm up with the rants regarding his competetors throughout the years such as Isaiah Thomas, Byron Russell, John Starks, and coaches Pat Riley and Jeff Van Gundy.  He covered just about every controversy on the court too.  Well just about. 

He talked about Thomas for instance freezing him out of that first All Star game in the mid 80s, but not how he in turn froze Thomas out of the 92 Dream Team.  He talked about how then Knick coach Riley wouldn’t allow good friend Charles Oakley have dinner with Jordan during Oakley’s years with the Knicks, and how Van Gundy said Jordan befriended opposing players only to try to embarrass them on the court.  He even talked about how Russell challenged him during Jordan’s baseball days saying that Jordan should come back to the NBA so Russell could guard him.  Of course it was Russell who is immortaly posterized as the cat falling back as Jordan shoots jumpers on two separate occasions to win games over him in the NBA Finals. 

Unlike some Hall of Famers who speak about family and friends who helped them get there, Jordan hit that only briefly.  He used most of the speech to brag about his exploits.  I thought it was funny.  True to form.  The only thing he said about his kids was that he didn’t want to be them.  And he, the master of the Jordan brand that has paid him hundreds of millions of dollars even found time to bitch about all the thousand dollar apiece tickets he had to purchase for family and his lil trophy girlfriend to gain entrance into the ceremony. 

I’m thinking to myself, ‘Damn MJ!  You should have told the boys to watch it on TV!  You blows a thousand dollars within the first 10 minutes of a casino visit.  Your kidding right? ’

 Serena blows a gasket!

So what did y’all think of Serena Williams going off Saturday night?  First off it seems to me that Kim Clijsters is on an amazing role as a new mother and she is truly shining at this years US Open.  She not only beat Venus the other day, she had Serena all over the place too as the younger of the Williams sisters hit shot after shot into the net or out-of-bounds.  It was obvious that Serena wanted some get-back for what happened to her sister the other night and it showed as she tried to out power Clijsters to her own demise.  I knew it was a wrap when Serena slammed her racquet into pieces after losing a critical point.  Kim was all in her head and that’s just the way it is.

In terms of the foot fault; well that was a bad call and I don’t think a foot fault is something that a judge ought to get wrong considering where she was positioned.  Especially at such an important stage in the match.

That being said I am not going to pile on Serena for flipping her lid about it.  Don’t get me wrong.  It looked bad and I cringed as she kept going after the judge throwing on ‘F’ bomb after another.  But on the strength of her overall resume’ and good that she’s been to the sport, I think she deserves a Mulligan because this is the first time I can recall this happening.  If it doesn’t become a habit, it’s not a problem.  Besides that, as I recall when I first started watching tennis back in the day, a certain fellow was notorious for throwing such fits on the regular.  He is not only still revered in the tennis world, he happens to be the main broadcasting host of the tournament on both the men’s and women’s matches.

USC Does The Buckeyes

This just in from former USC fullback LenDale White.   “Ohio State still suckes!

Yes the Trojans went into ‘The Big House’ and rolled the Luckeyes for like the 25th time.  Whenever you get through with it, the Big Ten does not and will not be able to stand against the likes of the PAC 10 and the SEC.  We see it every year in bowl games. 

And big ups to Michigan too whooping up on Notre ShameDame!  You see all that extra work does pay off!  I was pulling for you HARD as I sat watching part of the game.  The Wolverines were the most important team in the world to me at that time.  Now that you have done The Domers, I care not what you do with the rest of your year.  Your season is now complete!

Next week!  My favorite team is…. 

wait for it……… that’s right!  MICHIGAN ST.   GO SPARTANS!

I focused in on the Basketball Hall of Fame enshrinement tonight live from Springfield, Massachusetts.

It brought tears to my eyes and chills down my spine.

It also increased my love for the game.

What many people sometimes lose sight of is greatness takes time.  Many athletes try and take short-cuts.  It’s too bad but excelling at your sport is hard, real hard.  You just don’t wake up one day and become Hall of Fame bound.

Michael Jordan, John Stockton, David Robinson, Jerry Sloan and coach Vivian Stringer (all joining many other greats in the Hall tonight) worked very hard to get to where they are in their career’s.  Things weren’t handed to them.  They took advantage of an opportunity or searched for an opportunity.  They worked, sacrificed, spent time at their craft, gave the effort and had the passion for the greatest sport in the world.

David Robinson: To his wife, “You make me wanna be a better man.”

John Stockton: from Jerry Sloan, “He passed the ball where players wanted it.”

Vivian Stringer: “We all need people who believe in us.”

Jerry Sloan:  “It’s not about the stats, it’s about winning.”

Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2009

Michael Jordan. John Stockton. David Robinson. Jerry Sloan. C. Vivian Stringer.

Congratulations Class of 2009.

I wanna take the time and reflect on the star-studded Class of 2009. Both the Basketball Hall of Fame and Football Hall of Fame are two events that I love to watch because you learn about the player/coach away from the game. We all know what they did in the sport but to hear the humble beginnings, the millions of lives these privileged athletes touched, and other heart-felt stories that make up a Hall of Famer is what makes this a special time.

I have a personal connections to two of the Hall of Famers that I would like to share. While I don’t have a connection with Stringer, Sloan, and Robinson I know of their great contributions to this wonderful game of basketball and most importantly their contributions off the court. They might not have touched my life, but they touched millions of others.

If there is any sport other than boxing that Filipinos will play it is basketball, and I too was engrossed in the game of basketball as a kid. Looking back at it though, its kinda funny that so many Filipinos love the game of basketball despite the fact that Filipinos are generally short. But those are just stereotypes…Anyways, I did have a very long basketball phase as a kid growing up. And like many kids growing up in the 90’s, I wanted to be like Mike. I wanted to fly, soar, twist, turn, and dunk like Mike, but I quickly realized that I could not. What I did realize was that I could move and play defense decently, and that I did not have to try and score in order to win. All I had to do was do the little things on the court, play the game with the team in mind, and try not to turn the ball over (happened a lot as I was by no means a good ball player). I started to mold my game more like John Stockton and play a hard-nosed defense that became my pride and joy. During pick-up games with friends in high-school I gained a reputation for being a dirty ass player that just got under the skin of people…and I never really trash talk in basketball (football is different).  I never became like Mike, but I was closer to becoming like Stockton.

Michael Jordan. What can I possibly say that any fan doesn’t already know? The name, the figure, the man, the shoe, the game, whatever…Michael Jordan still gives me chills. As a kid growing up on 71st and Talman in Chicago I idolized only three things: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Michael Jackson, and the Chicago Bulls. I was in love with the Mike-Mike-Mike trifecta in the 90s (Michelangelo from TMNT, Michael Jackson, and Michael Jordan). In fact Michael Jordan was not my favorite Bull initially – that honor went to B.J. Armstrong – but we were all Jordan fans by default. So instead of reiterating all the amazing stats, the ridiculous highlights, and the awesome shoes  I will tell you my storied connection to MJ.

The first ever basketball game I watched? It was championship-clinching Game 5 against the Lakers. I only watched it because my entire family was in the living room glued to the T.V. I did not understand the game of basketball yet – in fact the only thing I knew for sure was what a foul was – but I understood the magnitude of the Championship coming to Chicago. My older brother was 20 years old at the time and he always talked about the Chicago Bulls winning the Championship and how awesome Scottie Pippen was for the Bulls.

The first Air Jordan I ever got? My older brother and I got matching Air Jordan VI’s as a late birthday gift in February. It was also the same month my younger brother was born so my mom was kinda pissed that my brother spent so much on shoes. The funny story behind this is that they did not have a size for me, so my brother just bought the next biggest size available. Sadly, I wouldn’t be able to wear the shoe until two years later and at that time I thought the VIs were not that great (I was in love with AJ IX’s for some reason). I bought every AJ since the VI until the the AJ XIII.

The first ever basketball game I watched from start to finish? It was a January 1992 Bulls-Heat game. I remember it was a night game that my dad and I were watching. The Heat was just shoot 3’s like crazy that night and kept close with the Bulls. From what I remember, a young Glen Rice was just lighting the Bulls up that night and ended up with around 30 points. But we had Michael Jordan. Jordan dropped 40 points to win the game 108 to 106. I remember this because I wrote the final score and how many points Jordan scored on the inside box of my Air Jordans. From that day forward, I officially became a basketball fan and an avid Jordan watcher.

The day Michael Jordan shocked the world and retired for the first time in 1993, our family was ending an era ourselves. We left our tough and humble beginnings on 71st and Talman in the West Englewood/Chicago Lawn neighborhood of Chicago’s Southside to move to a small suburb called Bartlett in the Northwest Suburbs. Like Jordan’s move to professional baseball, our move to the suburbs was quite an adjustment but I never forgot the Southside of Chicago.

When MJ did return to the game of basketball, I was there…obsessed with the game and infatuated with his return. In his first-full season back during the 95-96 campaign, I recorded every single Bulls game on VHS, except for one. That one game I missed recording was because my mom actually got me tickets to go to my first Bulls game. I didn’t realize this until I was writing this post but the first Bulls game that I ever saw was against the Miami Heat four days before my birthday in January…Ironically, the same team I watched the Bulls play against four years earlier that made me a fan of this game. Sadly, this was the first and last game that I would see Michael Jordan play in person. However, as I reflect today how lucky I was to watch not only the Greatest Player of All Time, but to be part of a historic 72-10 record-setting season…and breath the same air as his Airness.

And now. 2009. The connection to MJ continues. After four years of what has been a very challenging and eye-opening experience for me at the University of Illinois, I was blessed by the grace of God to graduate from this fine institution in May 2009. I was elated, blessed, and very thankful for everything that the University has done for me. As I sat there, on my couch looking at Michael Jordan, John Stockton, Jerry Sloan, David Robinson, and Vivian Stringer get enshrined in the Basketball Hall of Fame as the Class of 2009 I was at awe once again. The Class of 2009  is one I’ll never forget.
