Sim, nosso VELHO amigo John Taylor.

Mila perguntaria: “Porque a ênfase no velho? ¬¬”

Aauhauhauhauh!

As for the question that prompts such an answer? “Is the internet stifling new music?” V

As for the question that prompts such an answer? “Is the internet stifling new music?”

Via BBC no less.

The article is written by once-rock star John Taylor, former bass player for Duran Duran and Power Station. The man has been pelted by his share of female undergarments while performing live, and it shows:

When artists today are asked to Twitter their every thought, their every action, to record on video their every breath, their every performance, I believe they’re diluting their creative powers, their creative potency and the durability of their work.

And in the long run I believe they’re also diluting the magical power and the magnetic attraction that they can or will ever have over their audience.

Right. So the inaccessible rock god has given way to the singer-songwriter who shares a campfire with us all. That has long been established. But why exactly is the internet stifling new music today? What makes the situation now any more dire than it was ten years ago?

My stepson is at New York University (NYU) and he was telling me how he’s currently into Cole Porter, music from the 1920s and swing music from the 40s. So the availability and accessibility of music on the internet today is truly incredible, and I applaud anything that can inspire interest or curiosity in anyone.

But this also means that those of us who before would have been looking towards the current culture for inspiration are now often to be found, like my stepson, in various backwaters of older music.

This relative lack of need for current, innovative culture can cause, has caused, is causing – maybe – the innovative culture to slow down, much as an assembly line in Detroit slows down and lay-offs have to be made when the demand for a new model recedes.

Gotcha.

It’s great to have a theory. It’s even better to have a little data to support it. As we go to print, the 1962 cast recording of Cole Porter’s Anything Goes (re-released in 1990) stands at #48,447 on Amazon’s music bestsellers. Not bad. You could do a lot worse. For example the “beautifully imaginative … magnificent” LP The Snake stands at #162,064. He just might have a point. The internet (better said: the internet age) might be disincentivizing creativity.

But one release is 19 years old, the other has only a few months of promotion behind it. By point of reference Radiohead released Pablo Honey in 1993, and Amazon ranks that album at #5,070. Too pedestrian? OK. Try, well, OK Computer at #729. Looking for something in the double digits? How about The Killers at #23?

It’s great that new listeners are uncovering old jazz, and it’s a shame that a rock übermenschlich has been forced to come down from the ivory tower (/sarcasm). But arguments with two data points are two dimensional, simple as that.

As we emerge from the financial crisis, it is important to develop a framework for dealing with fail

As we emerge from the financial crisis, it is important to develop a framework for dealing with failing institutions. In particular, the nature of the doctrine of “too big to fail” must be addressed and re-examined. Recently, John Taylor and Larry White have spoken out about the need for a rule of law rather than a discretionary authority. Their comments and my thoughts are below the fold.

John Taylor’s recent testimony to Congress outlines his view on the path forward. Here is a brief excerpt:

Two main alternative proposals are currently under consideration. One has been put forth as part of the Administration’s financial reform proposals. It would establish a special resolution regime under which the Secretary of the Treasury, with the approval of the President and agreement of the regulatory authorities, could apply an expanded FDIC-like resolution process to any financial firm if its failure would have “serious adverse effects on the financial system or the economy.” The firm would be placed into conservatorship or receivership and t he government could provide the firm with loans, purchase its assets, or guarantee its liabilities.

The other proposal would have the failing financial firm go through a bankruptcy process designed specifically to deal with some of the financial firm’s assets and liabilities, which are an integral part of the financial system. The bankruptcy proposal in H.R 3310 is an example of such an approach. The conceptual idea is that the bankruptcy would permit important financial transactions to continue without significant disruption during bankruptcy.

In my view the expanded resolution regime has significant disadvantages in comparison with a bankruptcy process designed specifically for financial firms. First, the new resolution regime would essentially institutionalize the kinds of bailouts that have occurred in the recent crisis. Hence, rather than providing an alternative to policy of bailouts, it would permanently establish such a policy. Second, the expanded resolution authority would be operated with a considerable degree of discretion about when to start the intervention and about the priority to give different creditors. In contrast a bankruptcy process relies on an established rule of law rather than the discretion, and treats creditors in a known way that is understood by lenders and investors in advance. Compared to the resolution authority, bankruptcy is a more predictable process.

Larry White echoes much of this sentiment in a recent speech:

If everyone knows that the rule of law will be followed, such that nobody gets bailed out, the incentive for imprudence disappears along with the hook into taxpayers. I don’t mean that no financial firm will ever act imprudently, but that there won’t be a system-wide malincentive producing an epidemic of imprudence. If it is known that nobody is “too big to fail”, or too well connected to fail, then lenders will not let financial firms leverage up cheaply in the belief that they will be protected.

Each of these documents is worth your perusal.

Ultimately, the debate about the limits of the Fed’s abilities as lender of last resort and the doctrine of “too big to fail” boil down to the same principles that arose in the rules versus discretion debate for monetary policy. Discretion generates uncertainty in that the behavior of the actor cannot be predicted. As John Taylor has documented so well in his recent research, the erratic and inconsistent behavior of the Federal Reserve and the Treasury during the financial crisis can explain why the crisis (and corresponding economic performance) got so much worse in the months of September and October of last year.

Moving forward, policy needs to be guided not by the discretion of the central bank or the Treasury secretary, but rather by the rule of law. Orderly and predictable bankruptcy procedures for all firms and the elimination of the doctrine of “too big to fail” would go a long way toward making potential future financial crises less severe (and might prevent others altogether).

What can we learn from this video besides why we shouldn’t dress like new wave pirates with curtain tassels around our necks? New Romanticism was awesome (but only from 1982-1985) and these guys were really freaking cute. You can try and pretend your bedroom wasn’t plastered with DD posters during this time frame, but I might not believe you.

Robert Barro has been one of those who have been trying to argue the futility of any fiscal stimulus. His argument has been more empirical than theoretical. He first talked about it in his popular article in the Wall Street Journal. Recently, his estimations have become available through his NBER working paper coauthored with Charles Redlick.

For another quip at the empirics of government spending, refer to this interesting graph popularized by John Taylor.

Sin of the city, mi canción favorita del álbum.

I Wanna Take You Higher – Original de Sly & The Family Stone
Perfect Day – Original de Lou Reed
Watching The Detectives – Original de Elvis Costello
Lay Lady Lay – Original de Bob Dylan
911 Is A Joke – Original de Public Enemy
Success – Original de Iggy Pop
Crystal Ship – Original de The Doors
Ball Of Confusion – Original de The Temptations
Thank You – Original de Led Zeppelin
Drive By
I Wanna Take You Higher Again

Los vídeos promocionales de este álbum fueron:

Hello Loves! Welcome to Book Talk Volume 7! It’s the 4th of September and guess what? My senio

Hello Loves!

Welcome to Book Talk Volume 7!

It’s the 4th of September and guess what? My senior year is almost here! After finally being accepted into my AP Literature class, I soon learned I had a few books to read. One included was The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls.

“Some people are born storytellers. Some lives are worth telling. The best memoirs happen when these two conditions converge. In The Glass Castle, they have.” – The New York Times.

This book is a memoir of a woman named Jeannette. Ever since she was born, Jeannette has been optimistic about life. Growing up with her mom, dad, sister, and brother, Jeannette was taught that family was the most important thing about life.

When Jeannette was burned at the age of three by trying to boil hot dogs, her life was changed forever. Jeannette’s father, Rex, decided his daughter didn’t need to be in any hospital. He could take care of his child better than any doctor. He grabbed his child, packed up the car with their belongings and family members, and hit the highway.

Jeannette’s family could never stay in one place at a time. They pretty much traveled the USA before finally residing in Welch, West Virginia. By this time, Jeannette’s mom had another child, Maureen. The money was running out, the roofs were leaking more, and the love was just strong enough to hold the family together. Her father dreamed of building a glass castle that will solve all of their problems. What will it take for that dream to come true?

Even someone with an substantial amount of empathy couldn’t truly understand Jeannette’s life unless they were apart of it. Reading Jeannette’s story was one of the best things I could have ever done for myself. Her memoir kept me glued to the pages. With Jeannette’s alcoholic father, too overly optimistic mother, and a family to raise, I congratulate Ms. Walls for making it out alive with a story to tell. Jeannette Walls is now married to John Taylor (Writer) and is living in New York City.

Still very popular in today’s culture is the Jolly Roger, the name of which was given to any of the various flags flown to identify a ship’s crew as pirates. The most common flag that identified a ship’s crew as pirates is the skull and crossbones: a skull above two long bones set in an x-mark arrangement on a black field. The name “Jolly Roger” has been thought to have come from joli rouge (pretty red), an ironic French description of the bloody banner flown by early privateers. These flags were intended to strike mortal terror in the hearts of the pirate’s intended victims.

This design was reportedly used by the pirate captains Edward England, John Taylor, Sam Bellamy, and John Martel. Despite the current popularity, most pirates in the 17-18th centuries used plain black flags. Pirates did not use the black flag or Jolly Roger flag at all times. Instead they stocked a variety of flags and would fly false colors until they had their prey within firing distance. When they had their victim within range, it was then that the Jolly Roger flag would be raised, often concurrently with a warning shot.

An interesting tidbit is that in World War II, it was common practice for the submarines of the Royal Navy and Royal Australian Navy to fly the Jolly Roger on completion of a victorious combat operation as a display of boasting and slyness instead of mayhem. Additionally, since the decline of piracy (although pirates in today’s world still exist), various military units have used the Jolly Roger as a victory flag and a show of fierceness and stoutness.

Atlanta Noo De Cadenet is the daughter of actress/photographer/whatever you want to call her, Amanda De Cadenet and Duran Duran’s bassist John Taylor, however when I first saw her I thought she was either a) Rachel Bilson or b) Rachel Bilson’s twin sister.

It seems that she has recently caught Mark Hunter of the cobrasnakes eye (not surprising since he seems to have a thing for brunettes with big brown eyes), but she also was recently signed to DNA models. She’s had a spread in French Vogue and has been the subject of many street style blogs.

I find her to be different than most other “it-girls” because she isn’t rail thin and there is a definite sense of confidence in the photos of her. With friends like Demi Moore’s daughter Scout LaRue Willis and 90210’s Shenae Grimes, I have a feeling Atlanta is going to take the internet by storm. She’s only in a few albums on the cobrasnake and she already has a thread on the fashion spot.

What I love about her is that she clearly has the typical “hipster” accents, such as the strand of pink hair and the neon green nails, but then she also has this free spirited hippie look that makes her stand out against the sea of other hipsters. She also really seems like she is the life of the party which is always fun to be around.

In the previous post I mentioned Thomas Parr, reputed to have lived, through the sixteenth century, until the age of 152. Reading around this man quickly leads you to the ‘water poet’ John Taylor. This was an epithet he gave himself; he was, in the days when London Bridge was the only bridge over the Thames, a member of the guild of boatmen helping people to cross. His work is apparently ‘unsophisticated’ but because of what he did, and the fact that he often addressed what were essentially transport disputes — between government and boatmen, boatmen and coachmen, etc. — in his pamphlets, he gets interest enough from social historians to have, at the very, least the Wikipedia article I’ve just stolen from.

Taylor comes across as cocky but rather lovely and strange. Aside from constructing a language called Barmoodan, he clearly had a pleasing gift for names. The title page of the immediately relevant work reads The Old, Old, Very Old Man: or, The age and long Life of Thomas Par, the Son of John Parr of Winnington, in the Parish of Alberbury; in the County of Salopp (or Shropshire) who was Borne in the Raigne of King Edward the 4th being aged 152 yeares and odd Monethes; His Manner of Life and Conversation in so long a Pilgrimage; his Marriages, and his bringing up to London about the end of September last 1635, Whereunto is Added a Postscript, showing the many remarkable Accidents that hapned in the Life of this Old Man. Skimming it, I particularly enjoyed:

In all his lifetime he was never known,
That drinking others healths, he lost his own;
The Dutch, the French, the Greek, and Spanish Grape,
Upon his reason never made a rape;
For Ryot, is for Troy, an anagram;
And Ryot, wasted Troy, with sword and flame:
And surely that which will a kingdom spill,
Hath much more power one silly man to kill,
Whilst sensuality the palate pleases,
The body’s filled with surfeits, and diseases;
By riot (more than war) men slaughtered be,
From which confusion this old man is free.

The strangely crowbarred use of the anagram is interesting, and seems to fit neatly with the man who wrote one of the earliest recorded palindromes: his ‘Lewd did I live, & evil I did dwel’ is from 1614.

Also included in the volume is The Great Eater of Kent, or Part of the Admirable Teeth and Stomach Exploits of Nicholas Wood, of Harrisom, in the County of Kent, His Excessive manner of Eating without manners in strange and trve manner described; and, seemingly a prose dialogue, The Lamentable Complaints of Hop the Brewer and Kilcalfe the Butcher, As they met by chance in the Countrey, against the restraint lately set out by the Parliament, against Tapsters and Cookes: which hath caused them to cracke their credit, and to betake them to their heeles.

Gee, is it any wonder that Obama decided to unload this little gem late on a Friday, just as he slips out of town on vacation, not to be disturbed?

White House Adds $2 Trillion to Deficit Forecasts

The nation would be forced to borrow more than $9 trillion over the next decade under President Obama’s policies, the White House acknowledged late Friday, bringing their long-term budget forecast in line with independent estimates.

The new projections add approximately $2 trillion to budget deficits through 2019. Earlier this year, the administration had predicted that Obama’s policies would require the government to spend $7.108 trillion more than it collects in tax revenue over the next decade.

An administration official, speaking on the condition of anonymity because the report will not be formally released until Tuesday, said the change is due primarily to updated projections of economic growth that are far less rosy than data used when the White House released its first long-term budget outlook in February. At that time, the White House predicted the economy would shrink by 1.2 percent this year; in fact, the economy shrank at an annualized rate of 6.4 percent in the first quarter, the sharpest drop since 1980.

Critics called the administration overly optimistic, charging that Obama’s figures masked the depth of the nation’s fiscal crisis and falsely suggested that his policies would stabilize the nation’s growing debt to China and other foreign creditors.

The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office has predicted that Obama’s policies would force the nation to borrow $9.1 trillion between 2010 and 2019. Like the White House, the CBO is scheduled to release an updated forecast on Tuesday.

US deficit poses potential systemic risk: Taylor

The U.S. budget deficit poses more of a potential risk to the financial system than the collapse in commercial real estate prices, an influential economist said on Friday.

“We have a huge deficit. … The stimulus package is generating a lot more debt, and there are systemic issues there,” Stanford University economics professor John Taylor told Reuters Television on the sidelines of the Federal Reserve’s annual Jackson Hole conference.

The Obama administration expects the deficit to hit a record $1.58 trillion this year, and sees a cumulative $9 trillion of additional red ink in 2010-1019.

“If that gets out of control, if interest rates start to rise because people are reluctant to buy all that debt then that can slow the economy down. So, that’s the more systemic concern I have,” Taylor said.

Oh my gosh!… the last few weeks have been a blur of life obligations and a lil Jonasing, and the content on the blog has gotten a bit weak (from Mememoi and me anyway). I am here in an attempt to rectify that with a good and thorough post about Music Exploration Nights (aka M.E.N.)!

Come along and experience music exploration nights – including the

FULL M.E.N. PLAYLIST on blip.fm!

M.E.N. are what happen when JT, Ryan, Garbo, Rob, Jack, and Casper (aka Bulldozer – the Jonas Brothers’ backing band – and friends) get on the bus after a show with a long ride ahead of them. Likely still a little wired after having tens of thousands of people scream in their general directions and no doubt putting on a spectacular show, they sit back, relax, break out their iPods and share music with each other. Thanks to Twitter, and the diligent efforts of Mr. John Lloyd Tayor (*heart bubbles*), they also share with us. The result is (to date) 100-plus (and growing) songs of wide ranging genres with each night standing as a spectacular playlist to explore.

These M.E.N. are special because, well – quite frankly – they really don’t have to share anything like this with us. They are all obviously passionate about music, and the lists also act as a primer of sorts for the thousands of JB fans who follow John (and the rest of them) because they are fans of JB (much like our own selves). And…these fans may or may not actually have any real interest in music. There…I said it. But I think it is true – not for all, but surely for some. So this is a way for the ‘Dozers to reveal a little more about themselves, while introducing us all to their idea of awesome music.

Go ahead and JUMP…

Last update 9.01.09

I am someone who LOVES music. I mean, if I am not listening to music, it is going through my head. Music is very personal to me. My music collection is just as valuable to me as the journals and ephemera I have kept over the 33 years of my life. I absorb the music loved by the people I love. I allow myself to be influenced, and my tastes are always evolving. Sharing music is also very personal. If I make a playlist for someone it is a very personal thing. But these M.E.N. are more than just personal.

Each night has its own context and flow. For instance, the first M.E.N. starts off maudlin, then gets down a funky turns whimsical then cynical then mooning then nostalgic, back to funky, then to reflective and bonding. Each song seems to spring from one another. This is not simply a playlist, but a listening session. For that reason I like to listen to each list in order (because I am crazy like that). I mean, each song is awesome in its own right, but for the truest M.E.N. experience listen in order. Of course, you can’t REALLY have a true M.E.N. experience (imagine the scene inside that bus, if you will), but this is likely as close as you can get.

You will find full track listings for each night below. I have featured 3 of my favorite discoveries from each night. There are tons of songs here that I love, it was hard to focus on the new ones, but that is the point of M.E.N.

In the end, the summer tour gave us 8 M.E.N. total and clocked in at 304 songs (with a couple of re-plays) and over 19 hours of music. Now that is what I call quality time!

I have created for you a nearly complete playlist of all of the songs (from Missing the War to Imagine) on blip.fm and you can listen here.*

And I want to know what your discoveries or favorites are from these lists!

I have also compiled mostly complete sets of iMixes you can buy on iTunes to get most of the tracks in six fell swoops. Support the artists…BUY THE MUSIC!

This one is the most EPIC to date. It is the longest with 63 songs, the most eclectic with a bold mix of classics, Indy, Reggae, Country, Rap, Funk, Spirituals and MUCH MUCH MORE! This one even contains a stumper (meaning I couldn’t find the song anywhere).

I love how they always end M.E.N. with a lullaby.

Nice job, guys, and thanks as always.
