Missisipi – Anni ‘30. Tre galeotti strampalati evadono dal carcere alla ricerca di un tesoro che non esiste. Per chi ama la commedia.. ma anche l’avventura, il western, il gangster movie, il musical, lo slapstick e il cinema muto.

Per chi difende la leggerezza, l’intelligenza e l’ironia.

Per chi ha voglia di farsi un viaggio nei miti, quelli cosmogonici dell’antica Grecia, quelli patinati del cinema Hollywoodiano e quelli “falsi” del sogno americano.

Per chi non resiste alle citazioni. Fratello dove sei? è una dichiarazione d’amore al il cinema classico Hollywoodiano, dai generi (ad esempio il gangster movie) alle scene (come quella esplicitamente ripresa da I dimenticati di Preston Sturges), ai personaggi (George Clooney, impomatato e con quell’aria da simpatica canaglia, fa l’occhiolino a Clark Gable). E gli omaggi non finiscono qui: dalla letteratura al cinema, dal mito alle leggende popolari, Fratello dove sei? è un crogiuolo di citazioni e giochi intertestuali, un vero spasso per chi voglia divertirsi a scovarli. Ad esempio: chi sarà mai Tommy Johnson, il chitarrista venuto dal nulla?

Per chi crede ancora agli eroi di un tempo. Quando Ulisse era “pio”, le sirene mezze donne e mezze pesce, Polifemo un gigante tonto con un occhio solo e Penelope stava a casa a fare la maglia.
In Fratello dove sei? Ulisse è un chiacchierone senza fede, astuto e vanitoso, le sirene donne in carne e ossa (soprattutto carne), Polifemo un ladro venditore di Bibbie violento e xenofobo e Penelope una fedifraga emancipata che dà non poco filo da torcere al di lei succube Ulysses.

Per chi vuole farsi un bagno nel profondo Missisipi della canzone popolare americana. La colonna sonora è un’enciclopedia di brani tradizionali e di successo americani, che vanno dal soul (es. Po Lazarus), al gospel (es. Down to the river to pray), al folk, al country (es. Man of Costant sorrow, Big Rock Candy Mountain, You are my sunshine), al blues.

We end this month’s Director’s Spotlight on controversial director Spike Lee with his most recent picture, 2008’s Miracle at St. Anna. After viewing Clint Eastwood’s 2006 war pictures Flags of our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, Spike Lee stated at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival that Eastwood should have included black Marines in his movies. Eastwood responded that they were specifically about the Japanese soldiers and the Americans who raised the flag, that there were black soldiers at Iwo Jima but they were segregated and therefore not directly involved, and that Lee should “shut his face”. Lee countered that Eastwood was acting like an “angry old man” and that he should have included them anyway. Thus, Miracle at St. Anna was born.

Alternating between the 1940’s and the 1980’s, the film opens on Hector Negron (Laz Alonso, Jarhead), a dark-skinned Latino WWII veteran and current employee of the U.S. postal service, watching The Longest Day and murmuring to himself, “We served our country too”. The next day, he seems to recognize an Italian-accented customer, who does the same before Negron shoots him dead. A young reporter (Joseph Gordon-Levitt, the chief reason I saw this movie) is thrown a bone by the jaded investigating detective (John Turturro) and witnesses the discovery of a lifetime: a long-lost marble statuehead of a destroyed Italian bridge, found in the perp’s closet. As the reporter pushes Negron for the story behind it, he recounts a tale of four members of the Buffalo Soldiers: one righteous and authoritative (Derek Luke, Antwone Fisher), one smooth and skeptical (Michael Ealy, Barbershop), one a linguist and optimist (Negron) and one huge and innocent (Omar Benson Miller, Transformers). Together, they survive the ambush of their squad in Nazi-occupied Italy and hole up with a fascist-supporting Italian family and a mute boy they rescued. The climactic finale includes betrayal (both romantic and political) and tragedy, but the film’s title is true to its word: hope surrounds the epilogue and Negron’s ultimate fate.

This is a thoroughly unimpressive epic. It was billed as the African-American version of Saving Private Ryan, and that would be an insult to both that war classic and African-Americans in general. The plot has an interesting premise and starts relatively strong, but quickly loses its Wuthering Heights comparisons and slows to a halt once the soldiers arrive in the village. The characters are all very two-dimensional; there’s a cliched love triangle between Luke, Ealy and an Italian woman, Benson is basically a black version of Lennie from Of Mice and Men, and the protagonist’s only real depth is his survivor’s guilt. And of course, as this is a response piece from none other than Spike Lee, white men are shown in every opportunity to be prejudiced and hateful (one of the unnecessary flashbacks-within-a-flashback features a great character actor, John Hawkes, in the most pointed attack on a group of people I’ve seen this year), and his direction does nothing but beg his audience to cry for the plight of the downtrodden black man.

I understand what Lee was going for, but he went about it in all the wrong ways. There’s a convoluted and overdrawn structure, distracting cameos by the likes of John Leguizamo and Kerry Washington, underdeveloped protagonists and an agressiveness in garnering sympathy for the director’s heritage; none of these are what I look for in a movie. Overall I give the film 1 1/2 pitchforks out of five; Spike Lee got in over his head this time, and I hope he sticks to what he’s good at next time.

    Tony Scott is one of the best modern action film directors today, so whenever he has a new film I always see it.  I had heard of the original version of this film but had never seen it.  I will definitely seek it out after seeing this version.  This was a solid action film with some very tense scenes in it and a great interplay between Washington and Travolta.  I always have liked Travolta more when he plays the heavy, such as his great performances in John Woo’s Face Off and Broken Arrow.  This is a fast paced and expertly executed crime film and all the lead actors do an excellent job.  The only fault I have with the film is that it doesn’t bring anything new or exciting to the action film genre.  But it is still a enjoyable and gripping film to watch.

    The plot basics are this, four amred men hijack a subway train one afternoon in Manhattan.  They stop and decouple the first car and then begin their plan too blackmail money out of the city by holding the people on the train hostage.  The leader of the terrorists is Ryder (Travolta) and he gets in contact with dispatcher, Walter Garber (Washington), who has been recently demoted due to being investigated for taking a bribe.  He makes aconnection with Ryder and he refuses to deal with anyone but Garber.  Ryder demands ten million within a hour or for every minute the payoff is late he will eliminate a hostage.  The Mayor (Gandolfini) okays the deal, but it seems the payoff is putting the stock market through the wringer and the negotiator in charge (Turturro) is wondering if Ryder only wants the money or is making a stock broking gambit with it too make himself obscenely rich.  As the time limit comes and goes Garber has to meet Ryder with the money and what follows is a tense face off and a game of cat and mouse, and who knows who will come out on top in this gambit?

    This is a good film.  Scott’s direction is great as always.  His style of fast cutting and quick edits is not for everyone, but I always enjoys what he does with the camera.  The film is violent too and never skirts away from showing it.  The way he sets up the SWAT sniper’s attacks is tense and when everything goes wrong it comes together perfectly.  Hegeland’s script is tightly woven and he really breathes life into both Ryder and Garber’s characters.  The cast is good too, Washington and Travolta have great chemistry together and as usual Travolta hams it up and it suits the film well.  Turturro is also good as the negotiator trying to get to the bottom of what is happening here.  I also really enjoyed Gandolfini as the mayor, he brought a much needed comedic element to the film and with all the tense face offs in the film it is much needed for the viewer to catch his breath from time to time.  The action sequences in the film are very good, I especially liked the sniper attack, that was the most memorable one in my book.  This was a tense and exciting film, but in my final estimation it does not add anything great to this type of crime film.  I think the thing that makes this film the most enjoyable was Travolta’s performance.

Revenge is coming.

Há uns meses atrás, o meu amigo páscoa, que lança foguetes nas festas populares e que de vez em quando faz uns trabalhos para a malta do cinema, ligou-me a dizer que um tal de Miguel Gay (lol), lá da terra das laranjas, lhe fez uma encomenda de 14 toneladas de fogo-de-artifício, para uma curta metragem que iria fazer. Perguntei-lhe se não era para o filme Trasformers: Revenge of The Fallen, ao que me respondeu que essa encomenda era 14 milhões maior. Após ser sujeito a tortura, desde as quais digo que me queriam fazer o mesmo que ao Daniel Craig no Casino Royale ou assistir a uma maratona de filmes do Cantinflas, só me sujeitei a ver este filme após ameaças sérias de não tornar a ver filmes de Uwe Boll. Para começar temos bastantes momentos humorísticos durante os 150 minutos de fita. Desde ver a mãe drogada no Campus Universitário, ao regresso aclamado de John Turturro, várias são as vezes que o sorriso nos aparece na face. Mas pelo contrário, todo o fogo-de-artifício utilizado é pouco para o que se vê em ecrã. O Egipto resistiu a Alexandre, o Grande, a Aníbal, a Júlio César ( o Romano, não o Brasileiro), a Hitler e até ao 007 de Roger Moore, mas não resistiu a Michael Bay. É vê-lo a arrebentar com pirâmides, casa típicas, monumentos históricos. E não satisfeito, polui oceanos com lixo que esta nos porta-aviões, bota fogo a florestas, arrebenta com universidades. Pelos vistos este homem tem um complexo de rebentar. É feliz quando estoira com alguma coisa. Ouvi dizer que o governo egípcio já pôs um prêmio sob a cabeça de Bay, dois camelos e três bolas de cuzcuz. Acreditem ou não, na invasão por parte das tropas dos U.S.A. em areias do país das Pirâmides, vi um chaimite tuga. Ainda falam dos filmes do Uwe Boll, ponham mas é os olhos nisto. Razão tinha o Shia para andar a fazer caricaturas sobre o poster de Bad Boys II. De Michael Bay, com Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, John Turturro, Ramon Rodriguez, Kevin Dunn, Julie WhiteIsabel Lucas, John Benjamin Hickey, Matthew Marsden, Andrew Howard, Michael Papajohn, Glenn Morshower e John Eric Bentley.

It’s the hottest day of the year in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, and tensions are growing there, with the only local businesses being a Korean grocery and Sal’s Pizzeria. Mookie, Sal’s delivery boy, manages to always be at the center of the action.

Where?

14,000 feet up on a Thomson Airlines plane.

About 200 people around me, really annoying, seat-kicking people.

Why?

I’ve always been put off of investigating the back catalogue of Spike Lee due to him coming across as a complete arse in every interview I’ve read with him, but with every new year brings a new best of list, and each year ‘Do the Right Thing’  is listed at a reasonably high placing. So I figure, what the hell? If I’m going to start, why not start here.

After all, even complete asses deserve the benefit of the doubt every now and then.

Worth It?

I wont lie, I wasn’t expecting to like this movie, mainly for the reasons above. But I am more than willing to hold my hands up and admit to being completely wrong on this one. Do the Right Thing is a fantastic debut about the melting pot of a small Brooklyn community, which manages to capture both the spirit of the community as well as the boiling point of racial tensions that underline the films message.

Lee has managed to get together a number of fantastic, flawed characters to help further a story that, granted went a bit terrible in the last 20 minutes, but ultimately entertained and captivated my attention span, a particular shout out to the character of Da Mayor. A drunk? Yes. Loveable? Without a shadow of a doubt.

A testament to how good this film was the fact it distracted from a very bad fear of flying and never once did I have a mid-air panic, something which has happened on every other flight I’ve been on.

Touche Mr. Lee, maybe you are as good as you claim to be.

A era hippie acabou e agora todos estão trabalhando. Mas você sabe, às vezes tem um homem que pode mudar tudo isso.  Sem comunistas, agora no máximo podemos acreditar no discurso deste republicano ou daquele democrata. Mas às vezes existe um homem para provar como nós todos estávamos enganados. Tudo agora é baseado no dinheiro para a caridade, para as artes plásticas ou para fortalecer a máfia da pornografia em videotape, que não sabem mais o que é cinema. Só que as vezes tem um homem que não liga, chega e destrambelha tudo.  E esse homem que eu não conheço não é ninguém importante, mas você sabe que às vezes tem um homem que… Hum, perdi o fio da meada.

Eis Jeffrey Lebowski, O Cara, exímio jogador de boliche que junto de seus incapazes amigos – o cardíaco Donny e o psicótico ex-combatente do Vietnã Walter – é tirado do seu mundo de baseados, white russians e calorosos debates nos clubes onde bolas rolam e pinos caem para fazer as vezes de Sam Spade. Ou de Philip Marlowe. Para aqueles sombrios anos pós-depressão,  o homem era Bogart, gel no cabelo, terno impecável, cigarrinho no canto da boca e frases ferinas. Nesses anos de incrível ressaca moral, nós temos que deixar isso pra lá e buscar compensação por nossos carpetes mijados e nossas fitas do Creedence.

Esse é o dilema moral do Cara. Tomado por um milionário homônimo, tendo seu carpete mijado e tendo que sair por aí atrás de uma ex-atriz pornô casada com o tal Grande Lebowski – que, segundo o próprio foi raptada por uma gangue de… niilistas? E, claro, no meio do caminho tendo que aguentar moleques arrogantes, a filha excêntrica do milionário, o síndico afetado, o pederasta mothafucka’, agiotas do mundo pornô, a polícia, um taxista que é fã do Eagles, os ataques de Walter, e lá vamos nós.

Predileção dos Coen, O Grande Lebowski é um grande filme sobre o nada, a desinformação, a estupidez e a fragilidade da vida. Só O Cara que não parece ligar sobre isso, e em momento algum ele reina soberano – o mundo faz gato e sapato de um pobre vagabundo metido em uma conspiração digna de um O Falcão Maltês ou À Beira do Abismo que, no final das contas, surgiu apenas por causa do caos que faz de nossas vidas grandes campanhas em nome de coisa alguma e que só foram empreendidas, afinal, porque nós somos estúpidos demais para fazer qualquer coisa útil. Ou preguiçosos, talvez.

Aí, uma bola de feno sendo empurrada por aí pelo vento logo transforma-se em sonhos psicodélicos envolvendo garotas gostosas vestidas de viking em uma pista de boliche, ou cinzas de um defunto sendo jogadas em nosso rosto. É tudo muito frágil, ridiculamente frágil. E é tudo muito estúpido, hilariamente estúpido. O planeta é tão rico em oxigênio quanto em burrice, e assim segue o balaio das grandes epopéias dos inúteis, por gerações. Por que, às vezes, tem um Cara para nos mostrar tudo isso. Às vezes, tem um cara para acender uns baseados e ouvir uns rockzinhos safados antes de terem a cabeça afundada na privada. Às vezes, tem… um Cara.

廿年前的作品，今日再看一樣看出味道，Spike Lee的獨立電影眼，廿年前就懂得關懷社區，看得出日常生活的隱藏危機，相比起《撞車》，早廿年頒一個金人給 Spike Lee更為實至名歸吧。

天才橫溢，光芒四射，唯一我估唔到的，是Spike Lee雖然早成荷里活注目導演，但至今的作品依然堅持己見，寧願拍自己深愛、言之有物的題材，也不似蘇德堡先生的早改走荷里活的金光糖衣大道，故此，Spike Lee其後大部分作品連在港公映機會都無，甚為可惜。

一個沒有「壞人」的社區，因何都會導致一場不可收拾的悲劇，Spike Lee放輕了種族、貧富的嚴肅討論，卻以一個非常炎熱的平常日子來道出一切，Spike Lee 親自飾演的薄餅仔 Mookie心如導演，游走社區了解社群卻依然無能為力，如此，那一個垃圾筒是注定要掟的，掟出對國家、對社會、對階層的種種不滿。

廿年了，階級問題越來越嚴重，舊社區的生活還是被人遺棄，假如真說改變了的，不是冰山不再融解，而是白宮主人換上一層黑皮膚，只是前路一樣茫茫。
