Oh, The Ringer… and I am not talking about my phone… the movie from 2005, you know the one… It has that Jackass star, Johnny Knoxville… I was completely and utterly shocked he would do a movie that actually had a sweet ending that put him in a tender light. And really, how can you go wrong with Katherine Heigl? You can’t, that’s how!

I will be honest and say I have put off seeing this movie because of the content; I wasn’t sure that making fun of the Special Olympics and developmentally disabled folks was such a good idea, but after putting it off, and everyone telling me it’s not as bad as it sounds, I sat down to watch for myself. And they were right, although, in the beginning, I did feel guilty for laughing! Now, please don’t think I am so high and mighty that I would be one to, say, boycott such a movie because of it’s premise, but at the same time, I am not so callous that this is a topic I would take with knee-slapping laughter either. I spend about a year of my earlier 20’s working with developmentally disabled folks, and the majority of that year with developmentally disabled sex offenders, which is a story for another time! I know that some paint the picture that these people are dumb, or stupid, and that is simply not true! Higher functioning individuals are actually quite smart and very cunning! I had more than one prank pulled on me in the houses I worked in, and I had more than one threat from both clients and co-workers to watch my back, because they could really do almost anything! But, I digress…

So, basically the movie is about Steve. Now, Steve has gotten himself into some trouble after firing his friend Stavi from their current employer, and hires him on to cut the lawn at his apartment complex. After Stavi has a bit of an accident, Steve finds himself trying to raise enough money to have Stavi’s fingers reattached, (I am sure you can guess what has happened here.) He seeks the help of his uncle, Gary, who owes him money. However, it turns out that Uncle Gary is trying to figure his own way out of a sticky situation. The plan? To dupe the Special Olympics, rig a bet, and win $100,000. Now, I am not trying to give just a recap of the movie here, so I am leaving out quite a bit, but I can say that I think Jeffy (aka Steve; aka Johnny Knoxville) and Lynn (Katherine Heigl) have some good chemistry in this flick. Lynn is one of the volunteers at the Special Olympics. I am sure you can guess that Jeffy likes Lynn, but Lynn thinks he is… special… I am not going to give anything else away in the off-chance you haven’t seen the movie, and if you have seen it, well, then you know what happens, and I shouldn’t have to remind you!

I guess the point is, I am glad I decided to put my first reactions aside, and watch this movie. It was light-hearted, a bit of a heart string jerker, and if nothing else, it’s great to see Johnny get beat on by the Special Olympics team! (Especially the slap delivered by Katherine that looked most real!) It’s funny but, the older I get, the more I figured this sort of thing would get my blood-a-boiling… But it has been quite the contrary. I am not nearly as easily offended, and I find things that might offend others quite hysterical, because after all, life is way to short to always be angry or offended over every little thing! Just laugh it off, and move on to the next offensive media production. Borat anyone? Or perhaps some Family Guy? Jerry! I’m gonna have me ‘em both!

So you want to make your mark and launch a career planning killer Guerrilla Marketing campaigns that are going to get your clients noticed, get people talking and make their product and/or service the next biggest thing since sliced bread, right? After all, you’ve seen Jackass (the T.V. show AND the Movie) and what could be easier or more fun than doing outrageous stuff and getting paid for it right?

You would be wrong. While these freedoms and flexibilities of Guerrilla Marketing are attractive, it is important to remember that this unorthodox approach to marketing can have some serious consequences.

Take for example a campaign that recently hit headlines. A campaign for Turner Broadcasting’s “Aqua Team Hunger Force” on it’s Adult Swim program mistakenly landed people in jail and on the hot seat when it was mistaken for a terrorist plot. The agency in charge of the campaign placed the Adult Swim character that looked like a bomb on light poles, signs, tunnels and street signs all over the greater Boston area. The only problem, nobody ever alerted the city authorities that they were going to do such a thing.

The net result? A huge fine paid by the marketing agency and ALSO by Turner Broadcasting. Not exactly what one would call “looking out for your client’s best interests”.

The take home story here is that Guerrilla Marketing can be fun and it can be outrageous. Much like any traditional campaign though, it must be planned out and well executed to avoid disaster. Speaking from experience, the last thing you want to get in the mail is a notice from the County Sheriff requesting your presence in their courtroom.

Avoid the arrest warrants, plan your campagins well, taking into account EVERY possible shortfall, and Make Your Mark!

Grand Theft Parsons On DVD now I picked up Grand Theft Parsons on a whim, paying £1.50 for it second

Grand Theft Parsons
On DVD now

I picked up Grand Theft Parsons on a whim, paying £1.50 for it second-hand. I’d heard mention of the film before, knew it involved both Gram Parsons and Johnny Knoxville (both of whom which, for better or for worse, I am a fan of), and, I understood, had something of a “cult status” (or so it appeared to me).

Prior to watching the film, I decided to look up some info about it (as I am want to do). The quotes on the box included such gems as

“ONE OF THE FUNNIEST FILMS OF THE YEAR” – What’s On

and

“HILARIOUS…LEAVES YOU CHUCKLING FROM START TO FINISH” – News Of The World

Neither of these statements are true – not saying that’s a bad thing. Grand Theft Parsons is NOT a rip-roaring, gut-busting comedy; there are indeed some blackly comic moments, but making a wacky road trip movie based on someone’s death wouldn’t be too appropriate, would it?

This is something the film got criticised for – marketing something that isn’t a comedy, as a comedy, is usually a recipe for disaster. People are expecting a totally different film! Silly film executives. The other major criticism I saw (mainly from the IMDb user reviews, so make of that what you will), is that the film wasn’t the “respectful” tribute to Gram Parsons some (probably old and hairy) fans wanted.

Again, I don’t think this was the point of the film, AND I think those people are wrong.

The film depicts the based-off-true-story of Parson’s road manager/best bud Phil Kaufman (Johnny Konxville) who, following his friend’s early death due to a drug overdose in 1968, attempts to steal his body (en route to a plush funeral in New Orelans) to cremate it in the desert – as per Gram’s wishes.

Along the way he is helped by a hippy whose yellow flower-emblazoned hearse he plans to use as transport (Michael Shannon), and is pursued by his girlfriend (Marley Shelton), Parson’s father (Robert Forster) and one of Parson’s many ex-girlfriends, out to get a piece of his fortune (Christina Appelgate).

Obviously the film takes some liberties with the story, and of course parts of it are comic – how could it not be? They’re stealing a guy’s coffin, after all. But it never feels exploitative; in fact, the overall feeling is one of melancholia. Kauffman is throughout trying to focus on this “mission” as a way to avoid dwelling on the fact that his best friend has – very suddenly – passed on, something which Knoxville portrays surprisingly well.

There is a lot more drama in this film than comedy, but the two styles do not jar, and work quite well throughout, working their way to a sad, yet triumphant and almost touching finale.

Grand Theft Parsons isn’t a classic, groundbreaking piece – it’s one of those works you describe to people as a “good little film”. It features fine performances by all, a fairly solid script, and a good soundtrack of Parsons recordings. It doesn’t deserve to recieve the flak it did/does; I thoroughly enjoyed it, and would recommend it to Parsons fans and non-fans alike.

VERDICT:
7/10 Hematomas

Being that it was produced by the man of the hour and since I remember an episode of the show where he antiqued someone in broad daylight, I’m gonna go ahead and enter this one into Spike Jonze week.

Jackass is about a group of guys with alarmingly high pain thresholds that make idiots of themselves in public places and hurt themselves for our enjoyment.

And it is totally sweet.

I’m sure the humor here isn’t for everyone and it might not appeal to an older/more refined crowd, but if you’re like me and your memories of TV in High School boiled down to you and your friends crapping yourselves in the school cafeteria from laughing so hard over last night’s episode of Jackass and Chappelle’s Show, then yeah, you’ll like Jackass: The Movie.

The formula is simple: it’s funny when other people get hurt, not to the point where they get put in a coma or anything, but more like when someone gets hit in the balls by a football. See, that sentence just made me laugh, and I bet it made you laugh, too. Everyone appreciates a good nut shot, or at least I think everyone does.

So if you haven’t already gathered, Jackass: The Movie is really just like watching the show for an hour and a half, only they can curse now and no longer have the TV censors to stop them from filming someone getting a toy car put up their hoo-ha. But that’s cool, I’ve watched Jackass marathons for longer than that and the next time a repeat comes on to break up the God-awful shit they have on MTV nowadays, there’s no doubt in my mind that I’ll be dropping whatever I’m doing so that I can laugh my ass off for the next half-hour.

And, yes, it gets pretty damn gross, but the show was gross, too. No surprises there.

There’s no acting, there’s no script, there’s nothing really to judge this movie on other than whether it’s funny or not, which it is. But that’s one of the reasons I like Jackass; anyone could have made that show, anyone could have made this movie, and these guys are the ones that finally just did it and capitalized on it. It’s like the R-rated version of America’s Funniest Home Videos, and that’s a pretty freakin’ sweet pitch for a show if you ask me.

Even if you catch this movie on TV, it’s still really funny. It’s also better than the sequel and I dig that some of the best skits aren’t even gross in the least. Jackass: The Movie won’t convert you if laughing at the expense of others isn’t exactly your cup of urine, but for the rest of us who can’t help but laugh a little before asking someone if they’re okay, you’re gonna have a good time with this one.

Marge: It’s not safe out! People are shaving their crotches as we speak. There is pubic hair in the air! Everywhere!

Paige: Admit to God you are a whore. Make a list of all the people you’ve fucked, and apologize to their parents.

So I should admit right away: I LOVE John Waters. Love him. I was introduced to Pink Flamingos by my college roommate, and I’ve never been the same since. I find him and his movies utterly hilarious, unique, and experiences in and of themselves. I want to be Waters’ friend, moreso than almost any other filmmaker or celebrity, but I fear that if I ever met him, he would find me too normal, too clean-cut, too boring. If I ever made it to Baltimore and happened upon him, I would hope that my adoration would somehow win him over, because I’m not so sure my personality would. I want to live in the worlds of Divine and Cry-Baby and Hairspray, where the soundtrack is always amazing and the characters always so strange and brilliant.

A Dirty Shame introduces us to a whole new cast of wonderful misfits who fit into the warped Waters universe. The people of Hartford Road are divided into two groups: sex addicts who wish to revolutionize the world with a brand new sex act, having been converted to their horny selves after being accidently bumped in the head; and “Neuters,” the puritanical townspeople who rally against anything remotely deviant. Specifically, the film follows Sylvia Stickles (Tracey Ullman) after her transformation from a normal wife and mother to a “cunnilingus bottom.” Her daughter, Caprice (better known as Ursula Udders, for obvious reasons, played by Selma Blair), is also a sex addict and they both (along with a gang of lascivious individuals with their own unique fetishes) follow a messiah-type figure played by Johnny Knoxville.

The plot really doesn’t matter, though. The first half hour is so incredibly enjoyable and funny, it makes up for the last third of the film, where the story gets lost a bit and starts to drag. The film isn’t as outrageous as you’d expect, and the themes (tolerance, acceptance of individuality, opposition towards suburban conformity and conservatism) are presented in a fairly heavy-handed manner, but it’s just so much damn fun, who gives a shit? Sure, it’s a little bit of a mess, but most of Waters’ films are. What makes up for it (other than the humor) is the fact that, despite how ridiculous and crazy his characters are, Waters treats them with respect and a little admiration. He cares for these people, relates to them and their issues, so you do, too. And despite the heavy-handedness, it never hurts to pound home the idea that even the most depraved individuals deserve some form of acceptance. As long as they’re not hurting anybody, why not let a couple puke on each other while they fornicate? Who are we to judge? Honestly, my biggest criticism is that Dreamland regular Mink Stole isn’t in the film hardly enough. However, whenever she graces the viewer with her presence, she steals the scene. Tracey Ullman fits right in with Waters’ world, and Johnny Knoxville isn’t half as annoying as you’d expect.

In summary… was it better than a nap? Basically, if you’re like me and find lines such as “Something is the matter with your vagina!” and “We got blatant homosexuals shopping right in our store. They eat life, you know. Sperm!” absolutely hilarious when delivered correctly, and want to live in a world where even the trees have hard-ons, then you’ll like this movie more than a nap.

Gjeninnspilling av filmen Walking tall med The Rock i hovedrollen.
Here’s an oldie, but a goodie. Jackass star Johnny Knoxville tests a bunch of self defense gear on himself, including Sabre pepper spray. He gets hurt, people laugh, paychecks are cashed, good times are had, and the world is safe another day.

Belmont Army carries multiple varieties of Sabre Pepper spray to suit your personal needs, and the demands of your personal climate and situation. Sabre Pepper Spray comes in stream, foam and mist, and many of varieties come with either a UV marking dye that, that will leave an attacker marked for hours after the effects of the spray wear off without even knowing it, or a more overt marking dye, that will literally paint an assailant and their clothing bright orange or purple.

Stay safe, stay aware, and always remember: don’t spray yourself in the face with pepper spray unless someone’s paying to watch it, or you’ve lost a bet and are honor-bound to do so. It really, really hurts.

Gaga, Lady – The in-your-face singer was quite excited about her trip to Jerusalem. She expected the journey to be a sobering spiritual experience, but she hadn’t ruled out getting drunk at a bar there. To show her deference to the holiness of the place, she covered her barely-there top with a black leather jacket adorned with a Star of David made from silver spikes. I’m not kidding. Read the article. Sometimes we don’t have to make stuff up.

Knoxville, Johnny – Us Magazine reports “Johnny Knoxville To Have Another Baby,” which is physically impossible. The epic strangeness of the life of a Jackass child: visits from Uncles Bam and Steve-O; hearty encouragement to play with fire; no training wheels; and very, very odd things done with a wiffle ball bat and cornhole set.

One-Liners, Twittering – Apparently lots of comedians, stand-up and otherwise, are testing out one-liners on Twitter. Take this one from Michael Showalter: “Waitress just said their creamed spinach was ‘banging.’ Not sure how I feel about that.” How much can you get out of tweeted responses like @MichaelShowalter: “Good one, Michael. I LOL’ed!” or @MichaelShowalter: “Hey Mikey, YOU SUUUUCK! Go back to wherever you…(pass out hard on small bar table in cramped comedy club, snore drunkenly).”?

Pratt, Heidi – The Hills alum and half of Speidi Prontag says that her Playboy shoot did not compromise her religious views: “I feel like God created the body, and the body is beautiful. The way God created us was naked.” Yes, but God also created silicone, rhinoplasty, and Speidi, so there was obviously room for error.

Move over Michael Vick, Brett Favre is here to steal your thunder. Bunch of stories are out on Favre today after the announced signing and first day of practice. Lots of mix reactions including everything from “betrayal” to “perfect fit“

Our take…sign him! Why not? Clearly the Vikings have evaluated him closely as they are paying big money for his services for one year. The Vikings have to be thinking about the Bears and Packs and their respective franchise quarterbacks and thus were willing to take that risk. Now said all that, we are still picking the Viks to finish third in their division but adding Favre makes them more competitive for sure.

Pudge Rodriguez returns to the Texas Rangers as a back-up catcher. Nice move as they look to hold off the BoSox for the wildcard spot.

He’s another, like Favre, who can’t stay away. Although this move would bring him back to the NL. [Smoltz agrees to deal with Cards.]

The other day I went with a friend to see the latestHarry Potter flick in theaters. Of course, I was

The other day I went with a friend to see the latestHarry Potter flick in theaters. Of course, I wasn’t going to think much of it since all movies now have, in a way, metamorphed into comedy focused thrillers so you actually lose the contents of the whole Voldemort vs. Harry Potter evilness.

As I was watching the previews before the movie, though, the person whoever put the previews in order could not stop himself from putting a preview of “New Moon” that was slated to come out November 9 (wow, how many times have I used ‘preview’ in one sentence?). Then my friend leaned over to me and said:

” ‘New Moon’ is premiering in Knoxville, you know?”

My response:

“Seriously????” (As in, yes I will be staying home that night when die-hard fans 15 miles away will be losing their minds)

I have a tendency to be ignorant about big stuff that is happening in my own town (like the time when I read in the newspaper that Jessica Alba came to Knoxville for a movie premiere too) because I’m so warped in my own Hollywood, which happens to be Asia. Or maybe it’s because I choose not to know. Either way, I’m never there to see it.

So when I got home, I decided to do some research on this big premiere thing. I found out the premiere is suppopse to benefit charity, The Children’s Charity of Eastern Tennessee. Every year since 2003, the Regal Cinamas’ Pinnacle 18 has presented a major movie flick of the year.

Here’s the list:

2003 ”Radio”- Cuba Gooding Jr. (Oh…my…god, it’s the person from Jerry Mcguire! How could I have missed that? Well, I was only eight then, I didn’t know he existed until I was 13.)

2004 “Walking Tall”- Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson. (You mean to tell me The Rock came to little ‘oh Knoxville??? Reality is hurting me.)

2005 “Dukes of Hazzards”- Jessica Simpson, Johnny Knoxville, and Seann William Scott (It keeps getting better. I wonder what jokes they made when Johnny Knoxville came. Ha…ha…ha.)

2006 “Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby”- Will Ferrell. (I’m not a big fan of Will Ferrell comedy, mostly because it’s not funny-it’s stupid. (no offense to any fans out there!) But the fact that Will Ferrell came to Knoxville is still…big.)

2007 “Good Luck Chuck”- Jessica Alba and Dane Cook. (So this was the premiere I read in the newspaper. I still can’t believe that was two years ago. But seriously, JESSICA ALBA CAME TO KNOXVILLE???? I think my mind has already been blown.)

2008 “Journey to the Center of the Earth”- Brendan Fraser and Josh Hutcherson. (I remember days when I would spend countless hours watching The Mummy, and just laughing at how funny Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weis were. I can’t believe I missed this opportunity to see him.)

And so for 2009, “New Moon” will, of course, be premiering at the Turkey Creek Pinnacle 18. I would actually love to go (but not as a die-hard fan. I’m mean, it’s not even about the movie, it’s about Tay-Looter coming to Knoxville *_*), but the tickets are ridiculously expensive. The tickets are probably going to start at $75 and then sky-rocket from there. Considering I’m a teenager who doesn’t get an allowance, who isn’t old enough to get a job, and whose savings (that are not going to college fund) is dwindling by a thread…my head is going to say NO. However, my heart says, just maybe.
