Gracias a un comentario de un usuario de Youtube a uno de mis vídeos de cómo hacer un puntero infrarrojo, me he enterado de algo que puede ser muy útil para lograr mayor potencia en el LED del puntero. Algo que siempre andamos buscando los que utilizamos la Pizarra Digital Interactiva de bajo coste con el mando de la Wii ideada por Johnny Lee.

Se trata de fabricar un pequeño circuito llamado “Ladrón de Joules” (Joule thief) que, usando un transistor, amplifica el voltaje de la pila utilizada.

La principal ventaja es que se pueden usar pilas gastadas o pilas de 1.5 Voltios para un LED que necesita 5V para producir una alta luminosidad.

L’hacker Johnny Lee dimostra in una nota trasmissione americana come ha modificato la Wii rendendola uno strumento potentissimo:
digital whiteboard, touchscreen e 3-D viewer.

A couple of months back I started to gain interest on the possibility to experiment new stuff on virtual reality and visualization using 3D Mouses. Back then I was inspired by the work of Johnny Chung Lee at Carnegie Mellon whose work on the subject is quite extensive and is all based on the Wiimote so I started playing with one of the drivers at my best friend’s house (who has a Nintendo Wii) where we discovered some of the features and capabilities of it when coupled with a driver (too bad the code was in C#.NET but we survived the code inspection) plus some interesting algorithms to calculate 3D positions and all.

So I was really intersted in the project and it’s applications and after many months of thinking and saving, I finally have a good way to put together a project that is good enough to spend some money on a Wiimote which I won’t use to play on the Wii (I consider the Wii to be one of the greatest steps back in the gaming industry except for it’s controller, which is not even great technology but it’s interesting at least) and I bought today a Wiimote and will start playing around with it.

My first testings will be very basic: I first have to test my Bluetooth connection (last time I had to deal with it on my Frugalware Linux, things weren’t working that ok, so let’s see what chances are in Sabayon), then start testing the driver (using the provided GUI to test the features and info from the Wiimote) and then coupling it with some visualization tests using OpenGL.

Next steps will be bigger, as I need some infrared LED’s to help the Wiimote locate itself in space and after I get full 3D localization, I can integrate some Physics Engine stuff (I’ll also post about Physics engines soon, I hope) and build my interesting project, which I’ll post about when everything is in place to start (let’s not spoil my friends out there yet ). I’ll keep you all posted on the results!

Other than the anticipated reunion of Ha Anh Tuan & Phuong Linh on Sunday night, the five-member rock band from Huntington Beach, CA–Frequency 5 was also another anticipated guest. Joining in the second gala of Bai Hat Viet, the band rocked Ben Thanh’s stage with three of their popular songs: “So Good, So Strange” , “Big Picture”  (from the movie “Dorm Daze 2) and “Just Don’t Say No. “

The band (Jonny Lee-leader, Jason Layden, Steven Koehler, Robby Friend and Mike Baker) have established Frequency5 for over 10 years and is one of the American youth’s favorite bands. They have appeared many times on MTV Chi, MTV 2, Disney Channel & Nickelodeon and are currently composing music for the movie Sprouse Twins to be broadcasted on Disney Channel. Moreover, they were also chosen one of the five best-known Pop/Rock bands in the U.S. by MySpace. (source: VietNamNet)

As for Ha Anh Tuan & Phuong Linh’s “Con Mua Tinh Yeu,” the song was remixed to an even slower and more romantic version for their special stage collab.:

Nacido en Texas City, Texas, en 1946, nadie como el simboliza la era de los “Urban Cowboy”, con sus peculiares sombreros emplumados que se pusieron de moda en esos años ‘80s y con la canción central de esa película, “Lookin’ For Love” como estandarte.

Comenzó en una banda de Houston, que necesitaba un cantante. En esa banda tocaban música soul, principalmente canciones de Otis Redding, y rock’n’roll, y en uno de los clubs donde tocaban, le preguntaron si podía cantar country, y aunque apenas conocían canciones, Johnny Lee dijo que si. Aprendieron un par de canciones y así fue como Johnny Lee comenzó su carrera.

En esa banda comenzó a tener problemas con el batería y un día, tras un enfrentamiento, le dijo: “Te voy a mostrar como se toca esto”, y se puso a la batería al mismo tiempo que cantaba como solista, tras lo cual, el batería terminó marchándose de la banda.

Johnny Lee era ingenioso, como se puede comprobar con la siguiente anécdota cuando estaba en esa banda inicialmente. Un día se fue a ver a Mickey Gilley, a un club de Pasadena, en las afueras de Houston, que por entonces ya era una cotizada estrella del country (y primo de Jerry Lee Lewis), y en uno de los descansos, a pesar de que no le conocía, se acercó a él y le dijo:

“Hey, seguramente no te acuerdes de mi, pero estuve en un show de TV contigo, hace menos de un año, en que actué de telonero y nunca tuve la oportunidad de agradecerte lo bien que te portaste conmigo”.

Gilley, le invitó a sentarse y le hizo cantar un poco. A los pocos días le llamó para invitarle a ser el líder de su banda. Después, Johnny Lee le confesó a Gilley que nunca antes le había visto en su vida, y Gilley, después de reírse, le contestó que no quería ser descortés, pero tampoco el se acordaba de haberle visto antes.

Mickey Gilley, junto con Sherwood Creer, propietario del club donde actuaban, decidieron abrir un gran club, con el nombre del cantante: Gilley’s, con capacidad para 8.000 personas, donde se rodaría la película Urban Cowboy, protagonizada por John Travolta y Debra Winger (que no está nada mal, dicho sea de paso), y donde también aparecen Mickey Gilley y Johnny Lee. Recomiendo verla.

La canción central de la película, Lookin’ For Love, que por cierto, fue escrita por unas maestras de escuela que no habían grabado una canción nunca antes, y que interpreta Johnny Lee, fue todo un impacto, llegando enseguida hasta el nº 1 en las listas, en 1980, y ese gran éxito cambió su vida. Y dicho sea de paso, la canción no es gran cosa pero llegó a ser imagen de marca en los artículos más insospechados: pantalones, camisetas, etc.

En realidad, el éxito de la canción precipitó la edición del álbum del mismo nombre, y no debió tener tiempo de escoger las canciones más adecuadas, porque el resto de las canciones incluidas son bastante flojas.

Su relación con Mickey Gilley siempre fue excelente, a pesar de que no le hacía mucha gracia el vocabulario vulgar con que se expresaba Johnny Lee en el escenario. Fueron grandes amigos y sin rivalidad entre ellos. Yo diría que Johnny Lee era el “protegido” de Gilley.

En su siguiente album, Bet Your Heart On Me, ya fue una elección más cuidadosa  y la canción que dio titulo al álbum también llegó al nº 1. Y también conoció a Charlene Milton, una actriz que hacía el papel de Lucy Swing en Dallas, una serie de TV que fue muy famosa, con quien se casó. Se fue a Hollywood y empezó a ser perseguido por los papparazzi, especialmente cuando estaba con ella, y la cosa terminó en divorcio.

Los éxitos continuaron con Be There For Me Baby, Sounds Like Love y You Could’ve Heard A Heart Broke. Llegó después el tercer álbum, Sounds Of Love, donde se incluye It’s Up To You,  una canción del que fue su ídolo desde niño, Ricky Nelson, y de la cual hace una versión muy digna. Inclusive en 1977, en unas de sus primeras grabaciones está “Country Party”, que es la versión country de “Garden Party”, también, de Ricky Nelson.

Un par de años más tarde, llegó el declive. La música country evolucionó hacia otros sonidos más modernos y comerciales, llegaron los “hats” y su casa discográfica Warner Brothers le rescindió el contrato, cambió a Curb Records pero todo seguía igual: en las emisoras de radio decían que era “demasiado country”. De todas formas consiguió cinco números uno y otros 5 que llegaron al top-ten.

Johnny Lee, un hombre divertido y deslenguado, disfrutó de la fama, mezclado con el glamour de Hollywood, estuvo un buen tiempo “cabalgando en un caballo ganador”, pero todo eso terminó. Intentó renacer, pero no lo consiguió. Atrás quedaron sus éxitos y el toro mecánico de Urban Cowboy. De todas formas, resulta agradable recordar esos tiempos, con canciones tan simbólicas de una época como ese Lookin’ For Love que podemos ver y escuchar a continuación,  durante una actuación en vivo, comenzando con estas líneas:

“I spent a lifetime looking for you

singles bars and good time lovers, were never true

playin a fools game hoping to win

and telling those sweet lies and losing again”

Johnny Chung Lee of Carnegie Mellon University shows some innovative ways to use a Wii-mote.  I gotta tell you this sort of thing is really interesting to me.

Cuando defendí mi proyecto fin de carrera allá en los 90, mi profesor me dijo, tal vez con un exceso de pesimismo, que no incluyera demos de mi trabajo porque siempre fallan: el conocido por todos y por todos temido efecto demo. Ahora bien, si la demo salía bien, el impacto en la presentación sería tremendamente positivo y además se demostraría a las claras qué se había hecho y qué no. En definitiva, se trataba de una apuesta arriesgada.

En una presentación, especialmente en el ámbito tecnológico, suele resultar muy frecuente incluir demos de productos o de aplicaciones informáticas.

Existen algunos fallos históricos, como el legendario pantallazo azul en presencia de Bill Gates durante la presentación de Windows 98:

Y por supuesto, todos los días podemos asistir a innumerables fallos anónimos, que no pasan a la historia, pero engrosan las estadísticas de demos fallidas.

¿Demo o no demo? He ahí la cuestión

Si se ha ensayado adecuadamente y si el producto funciona correctamente, entonces qué duda cabe, yo siempre apuesto por la demo. La vida es riesgo. No podemos limitarnos a nosotros mismos para evitar el fracaso. Recuerda: cuando siempre aciertas es que algo estás haciendo mal.

Once upon a time, our little corner of Southeast Texas was literally swimming in oil and as a result, many people were also swimming in money.  The bright lights and towers of the petrochemical plants ringed the city of Houston and the night sky often had the eerie red glow of a flame-topped flare burning off petro waste products.

Pasadena, Texas, is a compact little town that would be in the shadow of Houston’s skyscrapers if the oil refineries weren’t in the way.  Many people who lived in Pasadena in the 1970s worked at the plant, and when they wanted to party, they went to one place – Gilley’s.

Gilley’s nightclub was a sprawling honky-tonk located along the Spencer Highway drag in Pasadena.  It was billed as the world’s largest honky-tonk, and who could argue?  It certainly looked like it was three or four football fields long (or wide, I never could figure out which) and could easily accommodate upwards of 6,000 people at one time.  (Note to Yankees: I’m just kidding about the football fields.  Don’t send me any e-mails, please.)  Gilley’s hardwood dance floor was surrounded by long wooden tables and thousands of chairs, allowing a great view of the bandstand from wherever you might be in this massive complex.

On a typical Saturday night in the late 1970s, you could crunch into Gilley’s crushed-oyster-shell parking lot, park among all the pickup trucks and walk under the big sign that said “We Doze But We Never Close.”

Yeah, if you saw the movie Urban Cowboy (1980) it was pretty much like that – cowboy hats, smokin’ hot cowgirls (sometimes), drunk rednecks and that damn mechanical bull.  They had Gilley’s beer, which tasted like chilled (sometimes) horse piss, and every conceivable souvenir with the Gilley’s logo.  I used to say you and your girlfriend could walk into Gilley’s stark naked and purchase a full set of logo-emblazoned clothes, down to Gilley’s panties, jockey shorts, bras and cowboy boots.

Now this Urban Cowboy movie thing brought worldwide attention to the honky-tonk.   When they were filming it in 1979,  you could get daily updates on a local country radio station (KILT) where they often called for extras to fill out the nightclub scenes.  When the Bee Gees – riding the disco express from Saturday Night Fever – played the Summit in Houston, guess who showed up and did a disco dance onstage: John Travolta, with a full beard!

My favorite thing was the movie premiere party in 1980 at Gilley’s.  Just about everyone who was anyone at the time was there (I was a lowly member of the press).  Gilley’s “Urban Cowboy” Band was playing full blast and we were stuck off pretty much by ourselves in a remote corner, swilling free Gilley’s Beer.  This guy came up to us and said, hey, you don’t have to move but hang out here and help us keep the girls away.  Wha?  Then all of a sudden a side door opens and some big dudes in cowboy hats usher in Travolta himself, decked out just like in the movie.  He looked real pale and real scared, and the cowboy hat seemed to be wearing him instead of the other way around.  He gave us a couple of limp-fish handshakes and said he was pretty nervous about going onstage in front of this huge crowd.  “Don’t worry, man,” I told him, “they’re all drunk.”

Later on, I ran into Andy Warhol in the men’s room.  I kinda wanted to talk about the Velvet Underground, but Andy had to rush back to his dates – the tall Texas model Jerry Hall and her sister (who were in the movie).  Well, that pretty much started what you already know: everybody wore cowboy hats for the next few years, they played Mickey Gilley and Johnny Lee music on the radio and those damn mechanical bulls popped up everywhere.

Into the mid-1980s my wife and I ferried out-of-town visitors to Gilley’s, mostly on weeknights.  The band would be playing (no Gilley) and because the place was so huge, on those rare cold Texas nights they wouldn’t even try to heat it.  You could literally see your breath on the dance floor.  They finally shut the place around 1989 or so, and the next year a mysterious fire burned the place down.  Mickey Gilley opened a namesake club in Dallas, and now regularly plays for shriveled tourists in Branson, Missouri.  Much of his reputation seems to be staked on the memory of that old honky-tonk that once shared his name, but Gilley rarely sets foot in Pasadena these days.

Using the infrared camera in the Wii remote and a head mounted sensor bar (two IR LEDs), you can accurately track the location of your head and render view dependent images on the screen. This effectively transforms your display into a portal to a virtual environment. The display properly reacts to head and body movement as if it were a real window creating a realistic illusion of depth and space. By Johnny Chung Lee, Carnegie Mellon University.

[Chris Harrison] and [Scott E. Hudson] have built a novel system for faking a 3D video chat session. Their implementation separates the image of the chat participant from the background. They then dynamically reposition the video based on the movement of the viewers head. Their using the OpenCV library to do facial recognition (just like the Laughing Man demo). The 3D effect is very similar to what you see in [Johnny Lee]’s Wiimote headtracking. A video of the pseudo 3D chat is embedded below.

Lately we’ve been focusing on multitouch technologies, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t interesting research going on in other areas of human-computer interaction. [Johnny Lee] posted a roundup of some the work that [Gonzalo Ramos] and others have done with pen based input. The video embedded above shows how pressure can be used to increase control precision. Have a look at his post to see how pen gestures can be used for seamless workspace sharing and how pen rolling can give additional control.

Atrajo mi atención con su proyecto Wii Mote. Me subscribí a su blog, y la verdad es que publica cosas de tecnología muy interesantes, relacionadas con sus proyectos. Su blog es éste, por si estáis interesados. Yo ya he hecho algún post sobre él.

Pues ésta vez, no ha hablado de tecnología, sino de un grandioso vídeo, que según él perder el tiempo intentando cantar el coro de la canción es la representación del verdadero espíritu de la procrastinación.
