HAIFA (Press Release) — Dr. Sarit Larisch, head of the Cell Death Research Laboratory and seni

HAIFA (Press Release) — Dr. Sarit Larisch, head of the Cell Death Research Laboratory and senior lecturer in the University of Haifa’s Department of Biology, has been awarded the Johnson & Johnson Focused Funding grant for her research exploring the cause of brain cell damage in Parkinson’s disease.

The award, which is granted each year to scientists in support of innovation and excellence in science, was announced in 2008, and officially conferred earlier this month at an event in New Jersey. This is the first time in three years that an Israeli scientist has received the Johnson & Johnson Focus Funding award.

Dr. Larisch presented her research, funded by the Johnson & Johnson grant, at the award ceremony. Her study of Parkinson’s Disease , a progressive neurodegenerative disorder caused by the death of nerve cells in areas of the brain that control muscle movement, has revealed a direct link between Parkin, which is a protein implicated in the disease, and ARTS, a protein that promotes death of cells.

All cells in our body have the ability to self-destruct by activating an intrinsic cell suicide program called apoptosis, explains Dr. Larisch. In this way, the accumulation of damaged and potentially dangerous cells, such as tumor cells, is greatly limited. Aberrations in this process play a key role in the generation of many human diseases, ranging from autoimmunity and cancer to neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, she explains. ARTS is an important activator of cell death that was discovered by Dr. Larisch several years ago. It is normally present in most of our cells at a central junction within the cell death control machinery, and has the ability to transmit the last irreversible order of destruction to the cell.

Excess of cell death occurring in the brains of Parkinson’s Disease (PD) patients has been reported by many researchers as the major cause for the observed symptoms of PD, yet the direct cause for this excess cell death has remained unclear.

Dr. Larisch along with Dr. Stav Kemeny, a post-doctoral fellow in Dr. Larisch’s laboratory, and in collaboration with Prof. John P. M. Finberg from the Rappaport Faculty of Medicine at the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology, have found for the first time a direct link between Parkin, a protein that plays a major role in hereditary Parkinson’s Disease, and ARTS. Cellular levels of ARTS protein are tightly regulated to stay at low levels in normal cells in order to prevent unwanted cell death, says Dr. Larisch. But high levels of ARTS overcome the natural resistance measurements in cells and lead to their final destruction through apoptosis. Parkin was found to control the levels of ARTS protein in healthy cells.

“In PD brain cells,” explains Dr. Larisch, “Parkin contains mutations that compromise its ability to regulate the levels of ARTS. This aberrant function of Parkin in PD brains presumably leads to increased levels of ARTS which in turn induce the uncontrolled death of brain cells.”

“Further understanding of how defects in the interaction between ARTS and Parkin cause the loss of brain cells may lead to a better treatment of patients suffering from Parkinson’s Disease,” Dr. Larisch concludes.

How big is Big Pharma? In case you have ever wondered just how much revenue is generated in Big Pharma and from which countries it derives from, here is a great visual of revenue generated and expenditures in the pharmaceutical industry and from which global region in 2008. Pfizer, GSK, Johnson & Johnson, Bayer, Roche Group and Sanofi Aventis make up the big dogs in this industry. Considering most industries are in a financial meltdown, the pharmaceutical industry continues to grow and prosper, which is only good news for job market.

The European Union (EU): Modern Europe leading human rights; (Nov. 10, 2009) The previous pos

The European Union (EU): Modern Europe leading human rights; (Nov. 10, 2009)

The previous post “European Union (EU) describes Modern Europe” covered a few statistics and then a short description of the EU administrative and legislative institutions. This follow up post will cover what is working, then analyzing what need to be ironed out, and then how the world community is expecting modern Europe to lead.

The 27 European States forming the EU counts 6 States among the twenty leading economy in the world. By deceasing rank we have USA, China, Japan, India, Germany, Russia, Britain, France, Brazil, Italy, Mexico, Spain, South Korea, Canada, Indonesia, Turkey, Iran, Australia, Taiwan, and the Netherlands. Actually, those six European economies constitute about 90% of the EU in economy and in populations.

As a block, the economy of the EU may surpass the USA with a twist: the three largest industrial multinationals in every sector are US. For example, in aeronautics we have United Technology, Boeing, and Lockheed Martin; in medical materials we have Medtronic, United Health, and Alcon; in Medias we have Walt Disney, News Corporation, and Comcast; in pharmaceutical/biotechnology we have Johnson & Johnson, and Pfizer; in informatics we have Microsoft, IBM, and Google. Besides, the US is the first military power in technology, Navy, Bombers, and aircraft carriers. The EU is totally dependent on oil and gas energies imported from Russia and elsewhere. France has adopted a policy of being sufficient in electricity via nuclear energy (60% of the total of France production of energy). Denmark is 25% sufficient in Aeolian technology and Germany about 15%.

The EU is facing problems. First, the “community vision” is eroding: the decade after the fall of the Berlin Wall and disintegration of the Soviet Union sent the wrong message of jumping in the band wagon of US globalization; thus, the well to do citizens wanted to get rich fast by emulating liberal capitalism. Individualism overshadowed the need to resume a common culture of developing institutions that are trained to work toward the common interest and be reformed to keeping the EU spirit intact in human rights and human dignity.

Second, the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 took Europe by surprise. The euphoric undertaking of uniting East Germany quickly exhausted West Germany with the multitude of social, economic and political problems of this unification and captured most of Germany’s resources and time and prevented it to ponder on the EU necessities. The opportunity to deepen European consciousness for reformed institutions to expanding eastward was missed.

Third, the EU was discussing the two possibilities: either the strengthening the current union for the longer term expansion or hastily absorbing the many eastern European newly independent States. The political decision was to go ahead and allowing these tiny states to adhere to the union. I think that this was the appropriate decision because new States had to root their future into a tangible alliance or fall back into past habit, inclinations, and culture; thus, forming close alliances with Russia. The EU was the appropriate framework for ethnic communication and more democratic realization of social aspirations. The problem is that these tiny States feel that they should aspire to the same standard of living in no times. The latest financial crash has left al these States in bankrupt conditions and it is up to the rich EU States to salvage this predicament. Maybe this fact should remind the EU that not all States should enjoy the same rights until they can show the same capability to shouldering responsibilities.

The actual challenges are many. First, there is a political space to reconstruct: The budget of the EU institutions is merely 1% of the gross GNP while States allocate over 30% to re-distribute to collectivities, social protection, and welfare. The richer States are not that inclined to contribute heavily to the social stability of the poorer EU State members. Second, the EU has unified its currency (it overcame the States’ monopolies to issuing paper money) but is lacking a unified economic government. For example, the EU lacks common public spaces, no political party or organization has been created or formed to focus on specific EU interests, and the EU Parliament has no power to raise taxes to finance common policies. So far, the government chiefs are wary of relinquishing their interstates legitimacy and power.

As a block, the EU is still unable to challenge the US on crimes against humanity committed by the US and Israel; it is fully cooperating with the US on taking Israel off the hook in the UN for daily crimes against human dignity, rights, and apartheid policies in the West bank and Gaza. There are a few States in the EU that are showing trends to opposing Israel’s apartheid practices and boycotting its products grown and manufactured in the occupied West Bank; it is the people in these States who have set the stage for human rights and dignity reversal toward the Palestinian endemic plight since 1948.

The world community is on its toes: will the EU refresh its initial objective of “community vision” or will it relapse in petty interstates interest of monopolies and idiosyncrasies? We need the EU to be the caldron of community communication among ethnicities, languages, and cultures. We need the EU to be the social and political testing ground for viable alternatives in vision, institutions, ecological human survival, human rights and dignity. We need the EU to invent new reasons to living together and reducing man inequality.

The European Union is the most striking political and social achievement in the 20th century. The backbones of most of the UN peace keeping forces around the world are European contingents; the EU is the highest contributor in humanitarian budgets and for reforming obsolete public institutions in the under-developed States. The EU needs a refresher community vision and the world community should raise its voices and aid Europe in its endeavors.

I’ve been on several all-day field shoots while working for NBC News – this was my first

I’ve been on several all-day field shoots while working for NBC News – this was my first, and to date, one of my most important. The job was an FDA hearing about acetaminophen – the pharmaceutical terminology for what is known to consumers as the brand-name pain reliever Tylenol – and the story involved the FDA looking to address the problem of acetaminophen overdose leading to liver failure. Washington correspondent Tom Costello would file the story for Nightly News that evening, as the lead story.

I was sent to the campus of University of Maryland University College, the FDA’s choice of venue, accompanied by a camera crew and a satellite truck operator. My cameraman was cabled to lines, and broadcast via satellite back to the bureau. He shot the all-day conference live while the bureau recorded the hours of footage to tape for Tom Costello and his producer to monitor and sift for good soundbites. When the 9-hour hearing was over, an FDA press conference was called in another room, and I had to oversee the re-cabling and reconfiguration of camera and live lines to this alternate location.

There was also a Newschannel crew and correspondent there for a few hours. Correspondent Tracie Potts was there to get some sound of the hearing, and get an interview subject for her own piece for Newschannel, which would be disseminated to the nation’s NBC affiliates. While my cameraman was tethered to shooting the hearings, Tracie and I commissioned the services of her camera crew to interview and shoot set-up of a young woman who would become the central character in Tom’s piece. The young woman, a pharmacist, lost her sister to liver failure due to an acetaminophen overdose, and her story was so compelling, both Tracie and Tom agreed to use selections from her interview. I also oversaw several live shots that Tracie did with her cameraman for MSNBC, which required another live path from our sat truck, and while we had their cameraman plugged into lines, I was able to snag a couple more interview subjects for Tom’s spot, including a good opposite viewpoint from the Executive Director of an over-the-counter (OTC) drug trade group, which made it into Tom’s spot.

By day’s end, I had been responsible for nearly all of the elements in Tom Costello’s spot. The only elements that I did not oversee were an interview with a drug expert, shot from the bureau’s studio, and a tape of drug b-roll, shot at a local pharmacy near the bureau. It was a tremendous amount of work, but the result was incredibly rewarding – the lead spot in Nightly News, which wouldn’t have been possible without my contributions:

by Jessica Shambora We keep hearing how the economy is improving, but with U.S. unemployment at 9.8%

by Jessica Shambora

We keep hearing how the economy is improving, but with U.S. unemployment at 9.8% and rising, the job market gives us nothing but anxiety. Today Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) added to the pain by announcing layoffs of 6-7% of its workforce. That’s about 7,000 employees.

While J&J faces lots of industry-specific challenges–patent expirations, increasingly complex regulation, healthcare reform–the news is stunning. Particularly because J&J is known for its legendary credo that puts employees above communities and shareholders–second only to customers in terms of management’s priorities.

CEO Bill Weldon talked with me at length about this–the eminence of J&J’s employees–in interviews that I did with him last Spring. He told me that he says to his employees: “I guarantee we will fight for every one of you that works in this corporation. Does that mean we can always protect every job? Absolutely not. What it does mean is we’re going to do the best we possibly can to ensure we take care of the people that have made the company what it is and fight the battles every day.’”

Assuming that Weldon and J&J’s board haven’t abandoned the company’s age-old credo, might today’s layoffs be a sign that J&J’s fortunes have turned dramatically worse than Weldon anticipated?

“Investors have been asking all day, ‘Is there something worse environmentally than we understand–or than what J&J has relayed to all of us?’” says analyst Rick Wise, who follows the healthcare industry for Leerink Swan. J&J stock closed at $58.93, down nearly 2% for the day.

Wise, who rates the stock “neutral,” says that some investors view the cuts as a desperate grasp for profit growth. But he believes that as a traditionally conservative industry leader, J&J is simply trying to get ahead of the curve in responding to challenges.

“Would J&J have been in trouble today if they hadn’t done it [announced layoffs]? Hard for me to believe,” says Wise. The layoffs, he adds, give the company more freedom and flexibility to invest in areas that management has talked about, like treatments for Alzheimer’s.

J&J’s harsh action leaves many questions unanswered. To me, the two most compelling are: Is this another example of prescient management at the much-admired 123-year-old company? Or are the changes in the world so severe as to force a 123-year-old company to let go of its precious credo to take care of its employees?

For more on J&J’s legendary culture, read a piece I co-wrote with Geoff Colvin earlier this year, “J&J: Secrets of Success” and check out my interview with J&J CEO Bill Weldon below.

Diphenhydramine, a first-generation antihistamine manufactured by a division of Johnson & Johnso

Diphenhydramine, a first-generation antihistamine manufactured by a division of Johnson & Johnson, has become one of the most common household drugs under the name Benadryl. Benadryl is used to curb allergic reactions by stopping a massive exodus of histamines. Many people also know or have experienced diphenhydramine’s effects as a sedative: it’s used in many OTC sleep-aids as well. But what don’t you know about Benadryl?

Last night I had a bout of severe itching similar to hives. I was already at the peak of exhaustion, and handling the itching horribly, so I decided that a Benadryl would be nice to help knock me out and stop the itching. I took 50mg. Pretty soon after, my head started to feel incredulously heavy; I knew I was tired. I tried to stand up, and while my body was vertical, my head literally snapped to the side, resting on my shoulder and I toppled over. I was so tired!! Trying again, I made my way to my bedroom and climbed into bed. But something was wrong. My breathing was rapid, and I was suffering from what felt like a severe case of RLS (restless leg syndrome). I couldn’t lie still, and I was crawling out of my skin and starting to actually panic. It was one of the more unpleasant moments of my entire lifetime.

Turns out I was actually suffering from what’s medically coined as a paradoxical reaction to the Benadryl. That just means I was having an opposite reaction to the normally expected effect. It can happen to a host of drugs, for example pain meds actually causing more pain. With Benadryl, it is most common in young children, and sometimes the elderly, but rare for adults. It ended up with me jogging around the house, dancing in place, sitting and shaking my legs violently until I fell asleep on the couch. Highly unpleasant.

Sales execs, perhaps more so than other business professionals, have a talent for picking up on non-

Sales execs, perhaps more so than other business professionals, have a talent for picking up on non-verbal communication when meeting face-to-face with clients or potential clients. The furrowed brow. The fidget. Darting eyes. Nervous laughter. They are various signals to sales executives that they may need to modulate and/or adjust their strategy to make the person sitting (or standing) across from them more comfortable with the situation. After all, non-verbal communication is at least 50% -70% of all communication, depending on whom you ask.

Still, even with non-verbal communication sales executives have the benefit of being in the physical presence of clients and, depending on the signal(s), have the opportunity to make alterations right then and there. Not so online, where sales executives are increasingly selling their products and services.

As Patricia Wallace, Ph. D. and author of “The Psychology of the Internet,” told The Wall Street Journal recently, on the Web “nobody sees you yawn.” (It reminds us of a famous New Yorker cartoon that conveys a similar thought.) We were quite taken with the quote and decided to contact Wallace to get her take on the psychological challenges of online sales.

The use of language – crafting e-mail messages or leaving verbal messages on the telephone – cannot be underestimated. Sales execs “need to understand that the Web environment is fraught with one potential or another to say something that is going to be grossly misinterpreted,” said Wallace, who is also senior director, CTYOnline and Information Technology at Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth.

Part of the challenge is how to harness the type of skills (verbal and otherwise) that click in face-to-face settings to the online environment, Wallace said. She stressed that because online sales are (generally; read: Skype) not face-to-face, sales executives must be more personal (and respectful) in both tone and delivery.

It starts with the opt-in approach and being sensitive to privacy issues “They need to lean on the side of opt-in, and ask people, ‘If I give you this information will it be a benefit to you?’” Wallace said.

She added that joining appropriate social networks is another way that sales executives can get to know prospects in their space via a more personal vein. Sales execs also might consider establishing their own social networks in which the point is not products and services, per se. Wallace pointed to Johnson & Johnson as an example of how companies can use social media to their advantage. Johnson & Johnson’s health channel, on YouTube, features a wide array of videos designed to promote a better understanding of health and healthcare delivery throughout the world.

“The idea is to say ‘Let’s provide a service,’ a place where people can obtain value,” Wallace said. “[Sales execs] need to touch buyers in ways that go beyond a click-through or a cold-blooded checkout. It’s a face-to-face meeting, followed up by an e-mail, with an invitation to a Webinar or a special event.”

ACORN’s recent troubles highlight the unique place social profit organizations hold in our society.

ACORN’s recent troubles highlight the unique place social profit organizations hold in our society. We hasten to add that we have no special knowledge, other than what one reads or hears, regarding the details of alleged ethical lapses. Further, if legal action is warranted, ACORN deserves a presumption of innocence.

Still, and regardless of the tenets of our legal system, the harm has been done. Like it or not, the social profit sector operates under a different “social contract” than the for-profit sector and when that trust is broken . . . the fall from grace is deeper and harder. When Enron’s executives were convicted, the public attitude seemed to be a sarcastic, “Oh my, what a surprise!” But, when United Way’s CEO was convicted of fraud, the public pain was palpable. After all, the United Way had grown to be the 4th largest social profit in the country and they were (and are now) by all accounts funding valuable work in communities across the nation. We were hurt deeply because a special trust had been broken.

My leadership mentor, Don Winkler, often spoke about the “Shadow of the Leader” and how critical it was that a commitment to ethical behavior begin at the top. And the fact is that we can find business leaders who have “cast the right shadow,” such as Jim Burke at Johnson & Johnson. When criminals tampered with several bottles of Tylenol and people died . . . his first question was, “How do we protect the public?” His swift and unwavering commitment to ethical behavior saved lives AND the product (within one year it had regained its pre-incident market share). With respect to values and ethical behavior in the marketplace, my mentor was fond of quoting Roy Disney, Walt’s brother and the “brains” behind the business. He used to say, “When the values are clear, the decisions are easy.”

Even though the social profit sector may be perceived as being held to a higher standard than the for-profit sector we believe we can learn from those who have done the right thing, regardless of “sector-ism.” The trust you build with your client base and/or supporters will run only as deep as your commitment to ethical practice. That mantra must become part of every fiber that is the tapestry of your organization. Such leadership won’t solve all your business challenges . . . but we guarantee it will prevent many.

The most enchanting festival of lights is here, and with it some semblance of free time. Many of the profs are on temporary vacation and hence we’ve had at least a couple of classes cut down here and there. The weekend is mine for the taking and I’m guessing this might be the last completely un-hectic weekend for some time to come – what with placements and stuff round the corner.

Since my last blog, I’ve had two of my friends come down to campus, one from XLRI, and the other from FMS. The XL dude was here for Varchasva – which is our annual sports-cum-cultural meet. The event was a smashing success – not just because IIM L pretty much thrashed every other team in every competition, but also because we had Dominos and other food stalls on campus . Some yummy cheese burst pizza only added to the awesome taste of victory!

My FMS friend was here for a strategy-based competition organized by GlaxoSmithKline, which her team won. Procter & Gamble held their own competitions recently. So did Mahindra & Mahindra. And Uniball. And Cognizant. And Johnson & Johnson. And so many others. This has quite been the season of contests and is a blessing in disguise for everyone and their uncle who’re looking to garner some “CV points” even if they sound like “157th runner-up in an knee scratching competition conducted by You-knee-ball (out of 158 participants)”. Of course there are some real studs on campus, who win 50k and Summer internship offers and what not and have bombs rather than bullets on their CVs. During my college days I used to read about such people in the newspapers, thinking that one day when I join an IIM, I’ll also be featured like that for coming up with some awesome ground-breaking glass-shattering solution, but all those years hence, here I am, still reading the same newspapers and still looking up to others here.

Speaking of newspapers, I haven’t really got the time to read one in some three thousand years. I do subscribe though, and I just toss the day’s paper onto a mile high stack of old papers. It’s the same with most of the junta here. Term 2 as I’d blogged about earlier, is supposed to be the killer one. So far, it’s certainly living up to its name. If you thought that we’d be given any sort of leeway by the profs considering its summer placement season, you’d be surprised (like I was) to learn that “placements” is the last possible excuse you should be using. This apparently is because pre-, during- and post-placement processes sometimes disrupt class/quiz schedules and profs get wild at this. They are of the opinion that students should come to the IIMs for knowledge and not placements. I cant even begin to explain this one!

A lot of foreign exchange students have come to campus from various parts of Europe. Apart from having some really wild parties, they’ve also added to the overall beauty quotient, something that was briefly upped when the famous XL ki kudiyan were here for Varchasva.

Oddly enough, this term when activities are already at a high, profs in almost every single subject expect everyone of us to come prepared after reading cases and solving questions and readying presentations. Some people manage to do all this once in a while, but most classes start with a show of around 60 hands (in a class of 63) of people who haven’t prepared a thing for class. Some profs have explicitly mentioned that they would be giving marks for Class Participation (usually out of 10). Needless to say, there are a group of 7-8 highly enthusiastic people who ask so many (often nonsensical) questions, it leaves you wondering whether these guys will write questions instead of answers even in their final exams. One particular prof’s CP marking methodology really takes the cake though. According to his rules, everyone in class starts off with a 9 on 10 in CP. For each class you bunk or miss 0.5 will be deducted. Apparently coming in late is worse than bunking (go figure!), so that will make your CP account poorer by 2 marks. Ask random questions and try to act oversmart and you’d get a -5. And if you’re caught sleeping, you get a big fat zero. Now that’s what I call CP – Cruciverbalistick Pomegranetization (I’m all for randomness).

We’ve got 7 subjects this time around – including a lot of part 2 subjects of some really nightmarish part 1 subjects. God save me. (Overall though, it’s a good mix of subjects I must say, and certainly more business focused than last term.)
1) Management Accounting 2 – (Shiver)
2) Economics 2 (Shudder)
3) Marketing Management 1 (The Da Vinci Globe)
4) Quantitative Management 2 (The Lost Symbols)
5) Operations Management 2 (Shudder-Globe-Shiver)
6) Financial Management 1 (Om-Namah-Shiver-aaya)
7) Designing Work Organizations (Who am I kidding?)

All this shivering and shuddering isn’t only because of the subjects, but also because of the cold, which suddenly descended a couple of days ago. After around 12 am, the entire football field is enveloped in a low-lying blanket of fog – its definitely a sight to see!

By the way, a nice thing happened a couple of weeks ago. A business executive from the e-learning website www.testfunda.com got in touch with me and asked me to blog for them as they liked my writing style. Although I dont think I’m a talented writer or anything, I’m certainly happy to help aspirants who might just need the “If he can do it, then so can I” kind of motivation. You can read the interview here, and the blogs here (which for now are just mirrors of this blog).

Celebrations and Diwali puja will happen tomorrow on campus – I’m hoping we get some Diwali special delicacies too. Happy Diwali to one and all – Play safe!

With the Copenhagen international climate conference approaching in December, the reaction of business leaders to climate change is becoming increasingly dynamic.

Recently California’s Pacific Gas and Electric, PG&E, resigned its membership in the United States Chamber of Commerce in protest of their positions on climate change and cap-and-trade proposals. Its spokesperson referred to its “disingenuous attempts to diminish or distort” scientific findings about global climate change. Other members such as Nike and Johnson & Johnson have tried to distance themselves from the Chamber’s environmental statements and activities.

In Japan, the nation’s most prominent business association, Keidanren, strongly supported the Liberal Democrat Party and their recent low carbon emissions targets. There seems to be considerable conflict with the current Democratic Party Prime Minister Hatoyama Yukio’s ambitious goals of a 25% reduction in emissions, including technology transfers to developing countries.

I recently learned that there is a second business council in Japan called Keizai Doyukua (Japan Association of Corporate Executives), headed by the CEO of Ricoh, that is closer to the new prime minister and more open to the new global business opportunities that environmental regulation will bring. It is interesting to note which corporate executives Hatoyama recently appointed to the Government Revitalization Unit, a key committee on eliminating government waste: Kyocera Corp. Honorary Chairman Kazuo Inamori and Kikkoman Corp. Chairman Yuzaburo Mogi.

RapidFire attended the 57th annual ASMS conference in Philadelphia, PA, with an exhibit booth in the Pennsylvania Convention Center and a hospitality suite in the Philadelphia Marriott Downtown. The ASMS conference was the perfect venue to announce and celebrate the launch of the new RapidFire 300 System.

In the hospitality suite we hosted a RapidFire User Symposium and Launch Party for customers and guests attending the conference (photos). At the RapidFire User Symposium Debbie Zink from Merck spoke about P450 Inhibition (DDI) Assays, Andreas Luippold from Boehringer Ingelheim spoke about High-throughput ADME, Metabolic Stability and Caco- Assays and Matt Olsen from Johnson & Johnson spoke about Screening Difficult HTS Targets using RapidFire.
