Getver!

As an advocate, do you realize there are many children who have been waiting over a year to be sponsored? And did you know that if you request these packs, you only get them for 1 month? And are you like me, hating the idea of requesting these child packs and failing to get the children sponsored within the time allowed, and having your heart broken by giving the packs back, knowing that all you did was extend their sadness by another month?

A few weeks ago, at a concert in Lethbridge, Karen Taylor had a number of these packs. Within moments, I was confronted with a huge decision. I knew in my heart that God meant for me to see these packs, and I had to do something for these children. That happened to be on a Wednesday night; I prayed for guidance that night and the next 2 days. On Friday afternoon, I was at a friend’s funeral and the bulletin had the attached message on it. Without a doubt, I knew that message was for me. It was clear that I was just supposed to get braver. I was still struggling on Sunday about how many packs to order, though, until I heard the message from my Pastor. He spoke about faith!

Could God have been any clearer? I decided right then and there that I would start by ordering 6 packs on Monday morning. Within 10 minutes after the service, I had a commitment for one child and by the afternoon, I had another.

So what I’d like to say to all of you is this:

Stop listening to that sly, negative, cautionary voice in all of us that tells us to be careful not to offend anyone. Forget about controlling your passion for these kids. They NEED our help. If people judge you in a negative way because you’re passionate for these kids, I’m not convinced those people are worth having as acquaintances anyway. This thing called living doesn’t really have to be all that complicated, either. If God isn’t completely involved in your Compassion Advocacy, that would be the first thing to fix, and watch how He helps you get children sponsored. It’s really not that complicated at all.

Join me; get braver; but remember: God MUST be in the forefront, and your life will be less complicated. Then even more children will be able to start living, truly living: in hope for the present, and for eternity, thanks to your bravery.

I was fortunate enough to be one of the 120 or so delegates at the UK’s first ever Recruitment

I was fortunate enough to be one of the 120 or so delegates at the UK’s first ever Recruitment Unconference yesterday hosted by Bill Boorman at Barclays Tower, London.

WOW, was it a conference unlike any! With an eclectic mix of Social Media Experts, HR gurus, Recruitment Consultants and IT Whizzes in the amazing Green-Pod room, the unstructured format of the “conference-that-isn’t” led to many hearty debates on the various threaded topics which included:

Sourceology with Geoff Webb (@radicalrecruit) and Katharine Robinson (@TheSourceress)

Social Media Circus with Matt Alder (@mattalder) and Paul Harrison (@CarveConsulting)

Blogging for Business with Andy Headworth (@andyheadworth)

There were many more and you can find out more about the event here and hear the broadcast here but I thought I’d share with you my top three takeaways (and you can rest assured there were many more!) that I took away from the day:

1. Social Media & Recruitment = Value for Money

Thank you Jacqui Hill for sharing that one of your clients in the Public sector has reduced their cost per applicant from £400 to £15 by the use of Social Media in resourcing and also to another Global Business for the stat that they’ve saved £150K by social media strategies alone. Statistics like these really can’t be ignored and it’s no surprise therefore that Recruitment Consultants, Ad Agencies and Job Boards are wondering what their role will be as Social Media and Web 2.0 evolves.

2. Social Media & Recruitment = A tool for LISTENING as well as communicating

Thank you too to William Fischer of TwitterJobs (and this month’s Esquire Magazine) for outlining how the business breaks down and measures their Social Media Strategy into 9 scales including things such as PR, SEP, research and product development. How often do you use Social Media that way? If it’s a communication tool, then surely you should also be listening and engaging? And for the uninitiated (like me) it was a revelation to hear about “Active Listening Tools” that can do that stuff for you! Amazing!

3. Social Media & Recruitment – Engagement

Just by writing on your blog, Facebook profile or Tweeting doesn’t actually make you someone people automatically want to listen to – you need to truly engage to get the most out of the experience and show you’re human with real points of view and real ideas and perceptions. Permanently retweeting what others say, blogging sporadically and confusing your messages will all result in one thing – NOTHING. You need to engage with others.

For more information about the Recruitment Unconference then check out the various tweets and blog posts which can be found at #trulondon. I can’t wait for the follow up!!!

1. Write a Java program to create three threads namely A, B, C and make them run one after another. (C has to run after B completes, B has to run after A completes).
4. How will you synchronize static variables?

5. What happens when threads are waiting, but never being notified?

//
// <ins><ins></ins></ins>

ANSWERS:

1. Many ways to do it. I prefer join(). When a thrad A calls b.join(), then A runs only after thread b completes. So, for this problem, C has to call b.join() and B has to call a.join()
2. Actually…, nothing the notify() call simply returns.
3. Declare the variable as volatile. Every thread caches a copy of instance variable, work with local copy, and then sync it with master copy. But, threads do not cache a copy of volatile instance variable.
4.    Obtain class level lock.  synchronized( obj.getClass()) {……..}
5. Leaving the answer to readers!

It’s no surprise that the way we communicate with people is changing. Some call it the Communication Revolution and it’s characterised largely by the use of Web 2.0 technology and websites such as Linked In and Facebook, otherwise known as Social Media.

With this in mind, Linda Parkinson-Hardman of Grow a Better Business, and I, Michelle Fischer of Creative Leadership, invite you to complete the attached questionnaire about your use of Social Media when Recruiting.

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=9m00FDmhA781rOYugN7hnw_3d_3d

We have set a closing date for completion of this of Friday 18th December 2009.

The results of this research will be used to produce a White Paper that explores the key trends and themes around this topical subject and we’d be thrilled to share this with you. Please indicate your interest in this at the end of the questionnaire.

Needless to say, the more participants involved the better and we invite you also to forward this link to people you think would benefit from taking part and the research findings themselves. We are pleased to offer a prize of a bottle of Frances’ finest champagne to one of the lucky participants who will be chosen at random at the conclusion of this research.

We’d like to thank you in advance for sparing the time to contribute to this research project.

Best wishes

Step 1: Go to hear Step 2: Create your own account and sign in Step 3: Invite your friends to join S

Step 1: Go to hear
Step 2: Create your own account and sign in
Step 3: Invite your friends to join
Step 3: Done

How does it Works

1) Send Free SMS from YouMint.

As a YouMint member, you can send Free SMS

to your friends. You can send more Free SMSs to them if they are on YouMint as well! So go ahead and invite all your friends to YouMint so you can send them Free SMSs.

More Invites = More Free SMSs. The more people you have in your network the more Free SMSs you can send everyday.

2) Get Paid for Incoming SMS and Emails. You get FULL control over how many, at what time and about what!

When you sign up with us, you will start receiving relevant promotional messages based on the number of messages you specify and the time you want to receive them. Each time you receive an SMS you will get paid for it! Each time you open the YouMint Cash Mail, you get paid.

3) Get Paid for promos sent to your network on YouMint.

You can invite your friends to join YouMint and we will pay you every time they interact with a promotion too! We’re not kidding! We pay for you for your direct referrals and for your referrals’ referrals as well.

Confused? OK, here’s how it works

Here’s what YOU get each time a Promo SMS is delivered to or a YouMint Cash Email is opened by:

- YOU – Rs 0.20
- Your Referral – Rs 0.10
- Your Referrals’ Referral – Rs 0.05

So, if you have lots of friends, who have a lot of friends, you could make a lot of money each time a promotion is done. Even if we send everyone ONLY 1 promo a day, you stand to earn Rs. 666 every month. OK, OK, here’s the math again

a) 1 promo x 30 days x Rs.0.20 per promo = Rs 6
b) 1 promo x 30 days x Rs.0.10 per promo x 20 friends = Rs 60
c) 1 promo x 30 days x Rs.0.05 per promo x 400 friends (assuming each of your twenty friends successfully referred 20 friends each)= Rs.600

So, Rs 6 + Rs 60+ Rs 600 adds up to a cool Rs 666!

So basically, you make enough to at least cover your mobile bill . If you are a popular person with lots of pals, you will make lots more. Else if you are the kind who walks around with the phone permanently attached to your ear, you better start making more friends so that you can cover that bill.

Recently we had a story which involved improving one of our data models. The table for the model had grown quite wide and we wanted to improve normalization and performance. We wanted to move a few columns from our original table (Listing) to a new table with the primary key of the new table (ListingLocation) also being a foreign key to the primary key of the original table, our one-to-one relationship. I will try to detail how we accomplished this change using a simplified example. Source code is linked at the bottom of this post.

Here is the entity relationship diagram of the old, single table structure:

And here is the entity relationship diagram of the new, two table structure:

As you can see, it is a very simple example of a very common relationship in the database. However, what we found when implementing this in Hibernate was not a simple as I had hoped.

To get started here is the SQL used to represent our new tables:

CREATE TABLE Listing
(
id BIGINT(20) NOT NULL AUTO_INCREMENT,
price DECIMAL(10,2),
PRIMARY KEY (id)
) TYPE = INNODB;

CREATE TABLE ListingLocation
(
listingID BIGINT(20) NOT NULL,
address VARCHAR(255),
PRIMARY KEY(listingID),
INDEX (listingID),
FOREIGN KEY (listingID) REFERENCES Listing (id)
) TYPE = INNODB;

I’ve used MySQL for this example because it is free and easy to setup. InnoDB table types have been because they allow foreign keys, which is crucial to this example.

Our old Listing entity was pretty basic; it looked something like this (imports & getters/setters excluded):

@Entity
@Table
public class Listing implements Serializable {
@Id
@GeneratedValue
private long id;
@Column(columnDefinition= "DECIMAL(10,2)")
private double price;
private String address;
...

In this case, creating a new instance of Listing and persisting it is very easy. When we split the entities, it becomes a little more complicated. Here is what our entities looked like after being split:

@Entity
@Table
public class Listing implements Serializable {
@Id
@GeneratedValue
private long id;
@Column(columnDefinition= "DECIMAL(10,2)")
private double price;
@OneToOne
@PrimaryKeyJoinColumn
private ListingLocation listingLocation;
...

and

@Entity
@Table
public class ListingLocation implements Serializable {
@Id
@Column(name = "listingID")
private Long id;
private String address;
...

The differences are not large, but there are a couple important points to note:

Adding ListingLocation to Listing with @OneToOne & @PrimaryKeyJoinColumn annotations tells Hibernate the Listing has a one-to-one mapping with ListingLocation by using the Primary Key as the join column.

Adding @Id & @Column(name = “listingID”) annotations to our id field in ListingLocation tells Hibernate that id is, well, an ID, but that column should not be called “id” in the DB, but “listingID” as that will help an observer see the relationship quickly without looking closely at the schema. Also, it is good to note that the @GeneratedValue is not on “id” in ListingLocation as it is in Listing as we want to specify exactly what goes in that field.

The biggest gripe I have with using the one-to-one relationship is that we can no longer save Listing only. Our REAL Listing entity is far more complex with several relationships, but this was the first one-to-one relationship with Hibernate. Previously we could do something like:

Listing listing = new Listing();
listing.setPrice(price);
listing.setAddress(address);
listing.setFoo(foo); // where foo is a @OneToMany annotated entity
...
session.save(listing);

Now, we must save Listing and ListingLocation separately like this:

ListingLocation listingLocation = new ListingLocation();
listingLocation.setAddress(address);
Listing listing = new Listing();
listing.setPrice(price);
listing.setListingLocation(listingLocation);
...
session.save(listing);
if (listing.getListingLocation() != null) {
listing.getListingLocation().setId(listing.getId());
session.save(listing.getListingLocation()); // save ListingLocation
}

I guess I’m just a bit spoiled, but I was hoping that this would bit more automatic, as it is with the one-to-many/many-to-one relationships.

I have written a small app that uses these two entities and inserts a row into each table, the link is available at the bottom of this post. The config (hibernate.cfg.xml) expects that you have MySQL running on 127.0.0.1 with a DB named ‘OneToOneDemo’ with a user named ‘root’ and a password of ‘password’; I have included the SQL (Setup-OneToOneDemo.sql) to setup the DB. Just extract the contents of the archive, navigate to the project directory, and from the command line/terminal run:

mvn clean compile exec:java -Dexec.mainClass=com.point2.onetoonedemo.App -e

You should see the following output:

@OneToOne @PrimaryKeyJoinColumn Hibernate Demo
----------------------------------------------
...
Hibernate:
insert into Listing (price) values (?)

Hibernate:
insert into ListingLocation (address, listingID) values (?, ?)
Saved listing ID: 1

Download Source Code (12 KB .ZIP)

If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions on how to do better accomplish one-to-one Hibernate mappings, I would love to hear about them. If you have any problems getting the code to compile and/or run, please let me know and I will make the necessary changes. Everything should just work, providing you modify the hibernate config or setup your DB. I had a difficult time finding complete and recent documentation on this subject so I hope this post and the maven project will help.

Interested, curious, wondering…these words sum up many peoples’ attitude to Freemasonry.

Interested, curious, wondering…these words sum up many peoples’ attitude to Freemasonry. But why now, in a fast paced techno world, why this interest in a Fraternity that dates back centuries and some say even further?

I guess for many people its that longing for a secure community, where there is trust and a minimised chance of conflict because we are not allowed to talk about politics or religion. It is a chance to develop as a person in a setting which insists on the highest ethics and being made to constantly aspire to living by timeless virtues. Its about everything that was good and wholesome of the “old days”.

In addition, the Craft has become more open, much of the myths are being dispelled which previously polluted the image of Freemasonry. People are realizing that we support each person’s duty to worship according to their own customs. More and more established religions are starting to realise that most of the Grand Lodges of which the Irish Grand Lodge is one, is not incompatible with any world religion, although Freemasonry is not in favour of infringement of human freedom or dignity. More and more conspiracy theorist’s wild views seem carzier than ever before. Academic masonic authors have done much to illuminate the Craft in its true light. Increasingly the pseudo academic exposer’s who previously and still benefitt from books, appearance fees etc where they promise to highlight this “great evil” are losing ground as knowledge banishes myth. In old days that would be the group looking at the end of the map shouting there be monsters, while now it is clear its just more sea and more land.

Another important reason for this new attitude is that increasingly, Freemasons themselves are better educated in their own Craft and have started talking about it to their families and friends, once again illustrating that Freemasons are not some dark Cabaal of faceless manipulators.

People are starting to understand that many of the Craft is not “ruled” by the higher degrees as many alledge, but rather that each Lodge is autonomous within certain sometimes boring administration structure of the Grand Lodge. It is strange that the so called exposers never realised this fact, which they should have, but maybe they were too busy chasing personal fame and glory to notice, but who are we to judge.

What is interesting is that more and more there is interest from the ladies to join the Craft. I am personly in favour of ladies Lodges.

In modern times, Lodges use adverts, notice boards, welcome boards and even web sites to make the opportunity of joining known to potentially interested people. The key concept however remains that the potential candidate must take the first step.
